You Could Be Officer Material To Lead Is to Serve Before you know it, your lodge will be holding its annual meeting. Perhaps the single most important item on the agenda will be the election of lodge officers. The stronger your slate of officers, the stronger your lodge will be. Lodge officers create the environment within which they and their lodge can succeed in achieving clearly defined goals and objectives.

From the time we enter grade school, we are taught that two of the ways we can effect positive change is by voting and running for elected office. One of the things that they don't teach you in school, however, is how to run for office when your neighbor or friend is already holding that position! In that regard, here's a suggestion: Discuss your decision to run with the incumbent before coming to the meeting. You may be surprised to learn that the current officer welcomes your candidacy and is willing to support you in your bid for office.

Serving as a lodge officer is a lot more than simply filling a spot on the roster. It's both a demanding and timeconsuming obligation ... Right?

Actually, that depends on the individual. At one extreme, a lodge officer can opt to do very little and simply "get by." It's an easy route. It takes very little time and almost no preparation. Take a free ride and expect little in return. You can get by like that for a while, but eventually, the people who put you there may put you out, too.

On the opposite end of the spectrum, a lodge officer can interpret his or her election as divine providence and a mandate to rule with an iron hand. That person may be filled with good intentions; however, the "my way or no way" approach can alienate fellow lodge officers and lodge members.

As a leader, it's important that you give others the opportunity to learn, to provide input and to develop initiative.

When you are are elected an officer in your lodge or in your youth club, your authority increases. As that authority increases, so must your accountability, responsibility and sense of humor! When you hold an office, the spotlight shines on you, accentuating both your assets and your flaws Your ability to have fun - and achieve clearly defined goals and objectives is important. Leading by example inspires trust and attracts others.

What About You? Do you have a positive attitude?

Do you want to help your lodge and SPJST achieve new heights and are you willing to give of your time to make it happen?

Do you meet the qualifications for the office and are there special skills or talents that you could channel into your lodge's fraternal program?

If your answer is "yes" to any of these questions, consider running for an office in your lodge. You can make a positive difference!

T e SPJST's 2002 - 2003 100 Pennies Scholarship Fund Drive kicks off on October 1.

The regular meeting of the Supreme Lodge SPJST was called to order by Chairman of the Board, Bob Bayer with the following Supreme Lodge members present: Johnnie Krizan - District III Howard B. Bayer - District VII Donnie Victorick - District I Frank Klinkovsky - District II Chairman of the Board The Supreme Lodge members recited the Pledge of Allegiance and observed a moment of silence in memory of the deceased members.

AUDIT - The following audit assignments were made: Automobile - Director Victorick and Director Pflughaupt Ledgers - Director Krizan and Director Klinkovsky Invoices - Director Broz, Director Ahlstrom and Director Bayer The officers were available to answer any questions that might arise.

CHARITY BARBECUE - President Leshikar reported SPJST donated $10,075.00 to the Temple Fire Safety House. There were over 1600 plates of barbecue sold.

Recess was taken until 12 noon for the audit to be completed.

MINUTES - The minutes were reviewed page by page. On page 14 under District I, the word "visiting" was added. The first sentence reads "Director Victorick reported on visiting Lodge 17-New Tabor." Director Broz moved, seconded by Director Victorick to approve the minutes with the correction.

Motion passed unanimously.

OLD BUSINESS:

District Fraternal Activities Coordinator (FAC) meet September 21 Dear District FACs, Where has this year gone to? We have not had a District FAC meeting this year, so we will be meeting on Saturday, September 21, 2002. The meeting will start at 10 a.m., and we will try to finish by 2 p.m.

As you know, I have sent out a FAC survey to all of the local lodge FACs. You also received a survey. I want to go over this survey and see what we can do to make this position easier and not quite so overwhelming.

Bring your ideas and suggestions.

The District Youth Counselors will be meeting at the same time. If you car-pool with one, remember, their meeting may go longer than ours, and you will have to wait for them.

All District FACs are expected to be in attendance. We have many important topics to cover.

Minutes of the July 16, 17 and 18, 2002 Regular Meeting of the Supreme Lodge SPJST Held at the Home Office, Temple, Texas

LOCAL LODGES - President Leshikar reported Lodge 114-Fairchild has been disbanded. President Leshikar and Director Pflughaupt are to pick up the lodge books.

BY-LAW COMMITTEE - The By-Law Committee has been requested to meet with the Supreme Lodge during the October meeting.

SCHOLARSHIPS - There was a lengthy discussion concerning the scholarship program. President Leshikar will make a report in the October meeting on the scholarship program.

INACTIVE LODGES - President Leshikar and Vice President McBride will meet with each director and make a report in the October meeting concerning inactive lodges in each district.

YOUTH DEPARTMENT - State Youth Director Zavodny's report was reviewed. The number of active youth members is at its highest since 1985 and the LIT training was the largest since the beginning.

The Board went into executive session to discuss a personnel matter.

Recess was taken from 2:15 p.m. to 2:30 p.m.

2003 Scholarships SPJST will again be awarding $1000 scholarships to qualifying members in 2003. To be considered for one of the scholarships, contact the Scholarship Department .t (800) 727-7578 for an official cppliccoion.

YOUTH DEPARTMENT - There was a discussion concerning different ways of allocating funds to the districts due to a large increase of youth in certain districts. State Youth Director Zavodny was requested to return later in the meeting with amounts concerning the district youth fund annual reports.

There was a discussion concerning the District Youth Counselors' reimbursement schedule. Legal Advisor Kacir moved, seconded by Director Victorick, that any District Youth Counselor whose pay was less this year because of the effective date of the reimbursement schedule will be paid at the old rate for the year 2002 only. Voting in favor were President Leshikar, Secretary-Treasurer Anglin, Legal Advisor Kacir, Director Victorick, Director Klinkovsky, Director Krizan, Director Broz, Director Ahlstrom and Director Bayer. Voting against were Vice President McBride, Financial Secretary Mikulas, and Director Pflughaupt. Motion passed. By common consent it was decided that if the State Fraternal Activities Coordinator is asked to work at a camp as a nurse, it must be on a volunteer basis.

4NESTN1K-Wednesday, September 18, 2002 STATE FRATERNAL ACTIVITIES COORDINATOR - State Fraternal Activities Coordinator Yates was welcomed to the meeting. State Fraternal Activities Coordinator Yates reported the lifetime achiever awards have been received with outstanding a success. The golf tournament planning is on schedule and there are already sponsors for six of the eighteen holes.

EDUCATION AND NATURE CENTER - The ENC Board is enthusiastically planning a seminar for this fall.

SALES - Vice President McBride reported that there have been a total of 1153 applications written with $31,094,075 insurance written during 2002. He complimented the sales representatives on responding to the consistency plan.

NEW LODGES - Vice President McBride moved, seconded by Director Broz, to extend the expiration date to October 31, 2002 for organizing the twentythree lodges in process. Motion passed unanimously.

E & 0 COVERAGE - Vice President McBride presented information on a survey of sales representatives concerning E & 0 coverage. There was a discussion concerning the amount the premiums would be and whether or not E & 0 coverage could become mandatory. By common consent it was agreed to wait until 2003 for E & 0 coverage.

Recess was taken from 4:15 p.m. to 4:20 p.m.

GUARANTEED ISSUE - Vice President McBride reported the mailout for the guaranteed issues is complete for District I and District V. This mailout is offering members with $25,000 or less coverage, the option of $2,500 to $5,000 Whole Life or Single Premium Life.

MEMBERSHIP PINS - Vice President McBride reported the cost of the membership pin is $1.40 each and postage is $1.06. By common consent, it was decided membership pins will be mailed on request and each director will have some available.

UNIVERSAL LIFE - Vice President McBride reported there have been 135 Universal Life certificates issued during the first six months of 2002, with premiums in the amount of $58,719.59.

GOALS AND OBJECTIVES - The goals and objectives were reviewed. During the October meeting these objectives will be updated with the goals for the years 2003, 2004, and 2005.

LODGE COMPLIANCE - Secretary-Treasurer Anglin reported local lodge rosters for 2002 have not been received from Lodge 51-Ellinger, Lodge 57Gonzales, Lodge-67-Schulenburg, Lodge 167-Penelope, Lodge 195-Cleburne, Lodge 206-Mexia, Lodge 157-Lubbock, Lodge 149-Alvin, Lodge-156-Baytown, Lodge 162-Iowa Colony, Lodge 175-Rosenberg, Lodge 181-Conroe, and Lodge 137-Taft.

BUDGET - Financial Secretary Mikulas reviewed the income and expenses for the first six months of 2002 comparing the total with the budgeted amount. The amount of income stands at 81% of the budgeted amount and the amount of expense stands at 50%.

PENDING LOANS - Legal Advisor Kacir reviewed the pending mortgage loans in each district.

LITIGATION/BANKRUPTCY/FORECLOSURE - Legal Advisor Kacir discussed threatened foreclosures, foreclosures by taxing authorities, foreclosures in process and bankruptcies.

SOCIAL SECURITY BUILDING - The ground breaking has been set for August 15, 2002 with the finish date being approximately February 2003. By common consent it was agreed SPJST could fund up to $250,000 at a competitive interest rate.

VESTNIK - Editor/Communication Director Vanicek reported his computer system is outdated and has not been upgraded since 1999. He plans for the Vestnik to be online beginning January 1, 2003. There was a discussion about the membership service directory and that it would showcase the youth's photography. Bids have been requested for the 2003 calendar using the same format as the 2002 calendar.

Editor Vanicek is to return in the October meeting with a comparison of costs for the Vestnik as printed now, and if it would be printed every other week on a higher quality paper; and the cost of doing a magazine format once a quarter.

The lodge incentive banquet will be held at Lodge 47-Seaton in 2003.

If a person wants to make a certificate loan to make a mortgage loan payment, this can be done, provided it is disclosed on the loan request form, and the check can be made payable to SPJST. FINANCE COMMITTEE - Chairman Bayer read a letter from the Finance Committee recommending an allocation of $58,000.00 to the Youth Fund for 2003 and $5,000 annually until the convention for the ENC. There was a discussion considering these allocations. A committee consisting of the officers, Director Krizan, Director Ahlstrom, and State Youth Director Zavodny are to present standardization guidelines for camp in the October meeting. President Leshikar moved, seconded by Director Victorick, to approve the Financial Committee recommendations of a $58,000 allocation with guidelines for camp expenditures to be approved in the October meeting. Motion passed unanimously.

Legal Advisor Kacir moved, seconded by Director Ahlstrom, to approve the $5,000 annual allocation for the year of 2002 and 2003 for the ENC. Motion passed unanimously.

DISTRICT I -Director Victorick visited Lodge 179-Warrenton, Lodge 38Smithville, Lodge 17-New Tabor, Lodge 186-Caldwell, Lodge 141-Sealy, and Lodge 51-Ellinger during this quarter. He attended the District I Spring meeting, the Finance Committee meeting, District I camp, and helped with the Charity Barbecue at the Home Office.

CONSULTING FIRM - Secretary-Treasurer Anglin presented information on hiring Morgan Stanley/Dean Witter as a consultant for the fixed income portfolio. There could be a savings up to $150,000 on commissions as the consulting firm would do the trades flat and also provide research that is not available to SPJST. Secretary-Treasurer Anglin moved, seconded by Director Ahlstrom, to hire Morgan Stanley/Dean Witter as the fixed income consultant. Motion passed unanimously.

DISTRICT II - Director Klinkovsky reported on attending meetings at Lodge 47-Seaton, Lodge 74-Lovelady, Lodge 87-Temple, Lodge 80-Holland, and Lodge 174-Rockdale. He also attended the District II officers workshop, the State Horseshoe tournament, and the Charity Barbecue at the home office. He participated in the audit of the securities held at the bank.

DISTRICT III - Director Krizan inquired about the status of direct deposit of pay checks and again stated that the society should be doing interim building loans to provide service and to take advantage of the market yield of this product.

CUSTODY ACCOUNT - Secretary-Treasurer Anglin moved, seconded by Financial Secretary Mikulas, to transfer the custody account for the fixed income instruments to Morgan Stanley/Dean Witter. This would provide the consultant firm with the information needed to keep track of SPJST's portfolio.

Motion passed unanimously.

INVESTMENT POLICY - Due to changing conditions in the economy, Secretary-Treasurer Anglin moved to accept the proposed investment policy, which has more details as to how the SPJST's income can be invested. Financial Secretary Mikulas seconded the motion and it passed unanimously.

CASH FLOW TEST - Secretary Treasurer Anglin presented information on the need for a liability cash flow projection. By common consent it was decided to postpone the projections unless it became mandatory by TDI. VESTNIK - Financial Secretary Mikulas reported the number of Vestnik subscribers is 9,059. The cost per week for postage is $1,825. And postage rates will increase by approximately 20% beginning July 1, 2002. The cost for print-

Director Krizan reported on concerns of Lodge 5-Tioga, Lodge 183-Arlington, Lodge 178-Longview, and Lodge 180-Burleson. In response to action taken by Lodge 180-Burleson to sell their lodge building, a lengthy discussion followed with over whelming support pledged to keep the lodge hall operational.

Actuary John Agee was welcomed to the meeting. There was a discussion on the amount of interest that should be paid on interest sensitive products. There was also a discussion concerning the profitability of the life products.

Glen Kaminsky, Leonard Mikeska, Margaret Haisler and Rosemary Houser representing Temple College and the SPJST Museum were welcomed to the meeting. There was a discussion concerning possible grants for the museum. Director Krizan moved, seconded by Director Bayer, to extend the lease to the SPJST museum for two years with a one-year option. Motion passed unanimously.

Director Krizan moved that in the best interest of the Society, the Supreme Lodge be granted the authority to do whatever is necessary on a temporary basis to support the continued operation of Lodge 180-Burleson until the lodge can regain its status as a viable independent lodge within the society. Motion seconded by Director Ahlstrom and carried unanimously.

DISTRICT V - Director Pflughaupt reported on attending meetings at Lodge 88-Houston, Lodge 142-Houston, and Lodge 81-Needville. He attended the Czech Heritage Society meeting, insurance classes, the FAC workshops and the FIC meeting. He attended the Strawberry Festival and parade in Pasadena. He attended the District V YAD, and he invited everyone to attend the District V Fall meeting on September 15.

INVESTMENTS - Secretary-Treasurer Anglin moved, seconded by Vice President McBride, to ratify the investments for the previous quarters. Motion passed unanimously.

DISTRICT VI - Director Ahlstrom reported on attending sales representative classes, officers workshop, FAC workshops, the Charity Barbecue Lunch in Temple, District VI YAD and the District VI Youth Camp. He attended the 100th year celebrations at Lodge 40-E1 Campo-Hillje and Lodge 41-Port Lavaca. He attended lodge meetings at Lodge 28-East Bernard, Lodge 63-Sweet Home, and Lodge 97-Placedo. He attended socials at Lodge 143-Inez, Lodge 184-Moulton and Lodge 8-Weimer.

DISTRICT VII - Director Bayer reported on attending meetings at Lodge 107Floresville, insurance seminars, the LAM meeting, officer's workshop, and the FAC workshop. He also attended District VII YAD and the State Horseshoe Tournament.

MORTGAGE LOAN - Secretary-Treasurer Anglin presented a list of eight loans delinquent more than 90 days. Secretary-Treasurer Anglin moved, seconded by Director Krizan, to accept the recommendations on the delinquent loans. Motion passed unanimously.

INTEREST SENSITIVE PRODUCTS - There was discussion concerning the current interest rates on the interest sensitive products. Director Klinkovsky moved, seconded by Legal Advisor Kacir, to set the interest rate of Annuity I at 5%, Annuity II at 6%, Roth Annuity at 6% and the Immediate Annuity at 6% through October 31, 2002. Voting in favor were President Leshikar, Vice President McBride, Secretary-Treasurer Anglin, Financial Secretary Mikulas, Legal Advisor Kacir, Director Victorick, Director Klinkovsky, Director Krizan, Director Broz, Director Ahlstrom, and Director Bayer. Voting against was Director Pflughaupt. Motion passed.

Director Victorick moved, seconded by Director Krizan, for the interest rate of the Universal Life product to remain at 7% through October 31, 2002. Voting in favor were President Leshikar, Vice President McBride, Secretary-Treasurer Anglin, Financial Secretary Mikulas, Legal Advisor Kacir, Director Victorick, Director Klinkovsky, Director Krizan, Director Broz, Director Ahlstrom, and Director Bayer. Voting against was Director Pflughaupt. Motion passed.

AUDIT REPORT Automobiles - Director Pflughaupt and Director Victorick reported the state field representatives traveled 47,500 miles. They requested the vehicle description and license number be on each log and to total the mileage driven at the end of each page.

Ledgers - Director Krizan and Director Klinkovsky reported the ledgers were in order.

Bank - Director Klinkovsky reported on doing the audit at the bank with Auditor Jezek and found everything in order.

Invoices and Vouchers - Director Ahlstrom, Director Bayer, and Director Broz found good documentation on the vouchers and that telephone calls seem to be of shorter length. They reported everything was in order.

INCOME AND EXPENSES - Financial Secretary Mikulas compared income and expenses of the same periods for 2002 and 2001. Total expenses have increased by 26% and income has increased by 72%.

MEMBERSHIP - Financial Secretary Mikulas reported there are 50,748 certificates issued to 43,235 members.

NEW BUSINESS:

COMPUTERS - Financial Secretary Mikulas reported there is a need to upgrade personal computers and printers and upgrade to the Windows XP Professional. The estimated cost is $28,000.00. Financial Secretary Mikulas moved, seconded by Legal Advisor Kacir, to approve the update of personal computer operating system and to purchase one personal computer and printer.

Motion passed unanimously.

FINANCE COMMITTEE - President Leshikar expressed the opinion that it was beneficial for the entire Supreme Lodge to go as a group before the Finance Committee. Financial Secretary Mikulas moved, seconded by Director Pflughaupt, for the entire Supreme Lodge to attend any standing committee as a group. Motion passed unanimously.

POSTAGE METER - Financial Secretary Mikulas reported that due to requirements by the postal system it is necessary to upgrade our postage meter.

The approximate cost of the system is $25,000.00. Financial Secretary Mikulas moved, seconded by Legal Advisor Kacir, to upgrade the postage meter.

Motion passed unanimously.

FIC - Vice President McBride reminded the Board if a sales representative does not have his/her FIC designation or Group I license the maximum amount of a UL policy they can sell is a $35,000 death benefit. TDI will not allow a sales representative without a FIC designation or Group I license to receive any commission or split commission on a UL certificate that is over $35,000.

BONDS - Financial Secretary Mikulas reported on four bonds that have a NAIC rating of "6" which indicates no value. There are two Armstrong World bonds, one Enron Corporation bond, and one Polaroid Corporation bond. These bonds have a book value of $1,758,187.00 and the market value is $418,200.00.

There was a discussion as to how the value of the bonds will be written down to market value at the end of the year.

Vice President McBride reported Bill Orsak has been hired as District I field representative.

NEW PRODUCTS - Vice President McBride reported on four new products that he thought might be of benefit to the Society. Vice President McBride moved, seconded by President Leshikar, to authorize the Vice President to proceed with researching and developing the four new products. Motion passed unanimously.

VISION 2002 - Vice President McBride reviewed the Vision 2002 program.

After a lengthy discussion, Vice President McBride moved, seconded by Director Krizan, to increase the Vision 2002 incentives for employees, directors, and officers to $650 if 2400 applications are written and $800 if 2500 applications are written. Motion passed unanimously.

SALES CONTEST - Vice President McBride presented information on a sales contest that would begin August 1, 2002 and last for 3 1/2 months. The winning sales representative of the contest would win a trip to Bossier City, Louisiana. Director Broz moved, seconded by Director Victorick, to have a sales contest with the top 25 sales producers winning a trip to Bossier City, Louisiana. The sales representative must write a minimum of 15 applications.

The Officers, Directors, State Youth Director and State FAC will also be invited on the trip. Motion passed unanimously.

Henry Jezek, Independent Auditor was welcomed to the meeting. Mr. Jezek went over the audit for the year 2001 he had recently completed. All the figures of the society were found to be in order.

A presentation was made by Training Specialist Jim Weist on Long Term Care Insurance.

Director Ahlstrom made a presentation on Stachybotrus (Black) Mold. There is a dwelling in District VI that Director Ahlstrom, Director Pflughaupt and Director Bayer visited that has black mold. By common consent the Board agreed to send a pamphlet to SPJST borrowers.

DISTRICT I - Director Victorick expressed the need to pursue the youth allocation that is authorized in the By-Laws. Director Victorick invited everyone to the District I YAD and the Annual Barbecue held for the Snook Volunteer Fire Department.

DISTRICT II - Director Klinkovsky thought the meeting was very informative and there was a lot of territory covered.

VIDEO - There was a discussion concerning having videos made for new sales representatives to learn more about SPJST and to have another video made for a sales representative to take to a prospective member to learn more about SPJST. Vice President McBride moved, seconded by President Leshikar, to have the

Director Krizan explained that we should expand liberalizing our commercial loan program to take advantage of the market potential that exist there. By common consent the officers are to present information in the October meeting on commercial loans. Director Krizan requested that the Home Office provide technical assistance to lodges needing help in obtaining property tax relief.

Director Krizan invited everyone to the West Fest, Labor Day Weekend, Lodge 6-Cottonwood's 100th Centennial Celebration on September 8, Lodge 84-Dallas' Princess Ball on August 17, Lodge 92-Fort Worth's Czech Heritage Day on September 21, and Lodge 84-Dallas' Czech Fest on September 22.

DISTRICT IV - Director Broz thanked the officers and directors for all their help and he thought this was a long, full meeting.

DISTRICT V - Director Pflughaupt reported the Czech Cultural Center will be having a Gala on August 9. The District V Fall meeting will be September 15 and everyone is invited to attend. He complimented the Home Office Staff and expressed his belief that the meeting was beneficial and a lot of ground was covered.

DISTRICT VI - Director Ahlstrom invited everyone to the 4th Annual Barbecue Cookoff. The proceeds will be donated to the SPJST Scholarship Fund.

After discussion, Director Ahlstrom moved, seconded by Vice President McBride, to construct a permanent SPJST parade float to be used statewide at a cost of $5,000.00 or less. Motion passed unanimously.

DISTRICT VII - Director Bayer invited everyone to District VII's Fall Day on November 3, 2002 at Lodge 107-Floresville.

The next Supreme Lodge meeting will begin at 8:00 a.m. on October 15, 2002.

SPJST Library, Archives and Museum presents more Czech-American facts Greetings! Members and friends of SPJST! I hope everyone had a safe and enjoyable summer and found some time to unwind and relax from the hustle and bustle of every day life.

We were certainly glad to see many of you come by the museum this summer whether you were touring or "digging deep" into your family's roots. We invite you and your family and friends to come again as we are here to serve you.

I wish to report to you some more of those interesting facts about Czechs in America as I have done a couple of times before. For those of you who are history buffs (as I am), I hope you have learned a few things that maybe you did not know before. For those of you who are not into history, I invite you to read along anyway as this may just prompt you to read additional resources on Czech history: Czechs in America

1894 - Rudolf Ruzicka, born in Kourim in Bohemia, arrived in the United States as an 11-year old son of Czech immigrants. He became a noted graphic artist, recognized especially for his wood engravings. He devoted an interesting part of his work to New York and Newark. Sent to Italy by the Scribner publishers, he made a series of beautiful engravings for the book Fountains of Papal Rome, published in 1915.

1918 - Thomas G. Masaryk, now the head of the Czechoslovak independence movement, stayed in the United States from May to November and developed intensive diplomatic activity. Under his political leadership, volunteer Czechoslovak troops

fought on the side of the Allies in France, Italy, and Russia. Masaryk gained American official recognition of his movement as the de facto government of Czechoslovakia. While still in America, he was elected the first Czechoslovak President by the Revolutionary National Assembly in Prague.

1931 - Anton Joseph Cermak, born in Kladno near Prague as a son of a coal miner, was elected mayor of Chicago. Cermak was Chicago's first foreign-born mayor. In 1933, Celinalc was killed in Miami by the assassin's bullet intended for President Roosevelt. Before dying he said to Roosevelt: "I am glad it was me instead of you."

1941 - The Czech composer Bohuslav Martinu, born in 1890 and often called the leading Czech composer of his time, immigrated to the United States, where he composed Memorial to Lidice for orchestra, and a number of symphonies, concertos, and chamber works. In the 1950s, he returned to Europe and died in Switzerland in 1959.

1942 - A township near Joliet, Illinois, was renamed Lidice, in commemoration of the village in central Bohemia destroyed by the Nazi occupiers. In the Czech village of Lidice, all men were shot to death, the women were transported to the concentration camps, and the small children were sent to Germany for adoption.

1948 - In a coup, the Communist Party took over the government in Prague. As a response to the suppression of democracy, former members of the Czechoslovak parliament who were refugees in the United States

Around the State District Six Fun Day September 22 in El Maton Dear District Six Members, It is once again time for our District Six Fun Day to be held in El Maton on September 22, 2002.

This year, our contests for members 18 years and older are needlework, horseshoes, Christmas ornaments, and food—this year, it is pies as in the youth department.

Needlework will be the same as in past years. It must be done by hand— embroidery, crochet, needlepoint— with the stitches in back showing and not under glass.

Horseshoe competition will be as last year. established the Council of Free Czechoslovakia in Washington, D.C. 1958 - Two hundred intellectuals of Czech and Slovak origin founded the Czechoslovak Society of Arts and Sciences in America. The noted mathematician Vaclav Hlavaty of Indiana University was its first president.

1960 - On March 7, the 110th anniversary of the birth of the first President of Czechoslovakia, the U.S. Post Office issued a stamp honoring Thomas G. Masaryk.

1970 - Arnost Lustig, the Czech writer and Holocaust survivor, came to the United States. He became Professor of Literature and Film at the American University in Washington.

His works published in America include "Darkness Casts No Shadow", "Diamonds of the Night", "A Prayer for Katerina Horovitzova", and "The Unloved".

1972 - The astronaut Eugene A. Cernan, commander of Apollo 17, landed on the moon. Cernan was born in Chicago in 1934 to a Czech mother and a Slovak father. After the end of the manned lunar missions, he acted as senior U.S. negotiator in direct discussions with the Soviet Union on the Apollo-Soyuz Test Project.

1991 - President Vaclav Havel visited the United States in February. In Washington he was received in the White House and addressed a joint session of the United States Congress.

It was the first visit to America by a Czechoslovak president after the victory of democracy in the 'Velvet Revolution' in Prague in 1989.

1997 - In January 1997 Madeleine Albright was confirmed by the Senate as Secretary of State and became the highest-ranking woman official in U.S. History. She was born in Prague in 1937 as the daughter of a Czech diplomat, came to the United States at the age of 11 years, graduated from Wellesley College and earned a PhD at Columbia before entering politics.

In 1993-1997, she served as the U.S. Permanent Representative to the United Nations.

Recent Gifts to the Museum

Pies are to be made in a disposable container. Pies are not be custard or have a meringue and no graham cracker crusts. We will be following the rules from the SPJST Youth Rule Book.

Crusts may be either made or bought.

A copy of the recipe is needed.

Registration will begin at 11 a.m. and end at 12 p.m. Winners must be present to receive awards.

A very big thank you to Lodge 148, El Maton for inviting us and hope to see everyone there.

This included first and second graders from Zion Lutheran School of Walberg; Buckholts High School students, Senior Citizens Group of Round Rock, members of the Senior Citizens Center of Caldwell, Salvation Army Day Camp of Temple, and residents of Garden Estates Retirement Community also of Temple. Also touring were visitors from Alabama, Colorado, Florida, Illinois, Indiana, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Canada, and the Czech Republic.

The Traveling Mini-Museum was on display at Lodge 49, Rowena, for Czech Fest Day sponsored by District Four, Lodge 49, and the Concho Valley Czech Heritage Association.

I want to mention that the museum was given a "big splash" on the television news a couple of evenings in July thanks to Lisa Heitman from KCENTV Channel 6 of Temple. Ms. Heitman interviewed me and showed several areas of the museum in her news report. We thank Lisa and those who assisted her to make this possible.

The museum has often been referred to as "Temple's Gem"; we appreciate the publicity which helps to heighten the public awareness of what we have to offer to our community and visitors here in Temple.

Also, thank you for your positive remarks and kind comments we receive from so many of you who come or call for infounation. We look forward to assist you again.

State Golf Tournament scheduled for October 12-13 SPJST

The SPJST will be sponsoring its first-ever State Golf Tournament. The tournament is scheduled for October 12 and 13, 2002 which is the Saturday and Sunday of Columbus Day weekend.

While we know this is still a long way off, plans are already in the making.

The tournament is for SPJST members, family and friends. The scoring will be individual play and flighted based on your handicap. We are planning for three divisions. Youth Division (Ages 16-18); Ladies Division; and a Men's Division. The number of entries will determine the number of flights in each Division. The deadline for entering the tournament is September 20, 2002 or after the first 120 entries have been received whichever comes first.

Since this is our first tournament we do not have an established handicap for anyone. So in order to properly flight every one. Players will need to do one of the following two things: 1. Submit a photocopy of their home club handicap card or PGA card.

2. Submit two scorecards from two different rounds, attested by the course pro or assistant pro. The scorecards must be from rounds played no more than two months prior to submitting your entry form.

Tournament registration will be on Friday. October 11, 2002 at the SPJST

Home Office which is located at 520 North Main in Temple, from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. Late registration will be at the golf course on Saturday morning from 6:30 a.m. to 7:30 a.m. Saturday's evening meal will be held at Mungia's Bar-B-Que in Heidenheimer, Texas beginning at 6 p.m. The golfers meal is included in their entry fee. Additional meals can be purchased for $8 each.

After the tournament, we will be keeping a log of the scores and next years handicap will be based on the scores you shot in this tournament. We will keep these scores for five years and average them together each year to come up with your next year's handicap.

Players can sign-up individually or as a foursome. However, if signing up as a foursome, at least one member of the foursome must be a SPJST Life Insurance member. Cost of the two-day tournament is $72.50 per golfer.

Through the end of July, the SPISt had received 1,613 applicatons for insurance and annuity certificates.

The goal of the Vision 2002 member ship drive is to write at least 2,100 applications in 2002.

In conjunction with the SRIST's Vision 2002 program, local lodges have been assigned application quotas for the year. The lodge quota has been based largely on past performance and perceived potential.

The fourth column, "Youth Club Quota," applies to those lodges with youth clubs and reflects applications written for members between the ages of 0 and 17. "Youth Club" totals are applied toward the lodge's total quota.

The sixth column, "Lodge Incentive Count," reflects the number of new certificates issued for the Lodge Recognition and Incentive Program through August 31, 2002.

Lodge Letters Section Lodge 1, Fayetteville readying for Lickskillet Days The Fayetteville "Lickskillet Days" celebration is always on the third weekend of October. The festival is held to commemorate the historic past of Fayetteville which was first settled in the late 1820s. It was not called Fayetteville until Phillip John Shaver purchased the site in 1850 and named it Fayetteville.

Prior to being named Fayetteville, it was called Alexander's Voting Place and other names including "Lickskillet". The name was derived from the fact that in the old days, they had town celebrations and didn't cook a lot of food. The people who were late had no food to eat and were told to lick the skillet. This name stuck and has been used as the name of the town festival for the past 25 years.

The Fayetteville Chamber of Commerce will again sponsor "Lickskillet" activities on October 19 and 20, 2002 for the 26th year which includes queen's contest the Saturday before which will be October 12, 2002 at 7 p.m. at the Fayetteville ISD cafeteria.

Then the following,events will be held each day as follows: Saturday, October 19

Barbecue cookoff and horseshoe tournament at the SPJST hall on the est side of town, Highway 159. Call Allen Minarcik (979) 968-3618; or Rodney Sladek (979) 378-2213 for information. Craft and art booths will be on the Fayetteville Square all day.

To reserve booth space, call Judy Rackley (979) 378-4273. The Fayetteville Area Heritage Museum and recently restored Precinct Courthouse will be open from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m.

In the evening, Todd Fritsch, Fayette County's newest star on the horizon, will provide great musical entertainment in conjunction with a dance a the Fayetteville SPJST hail.

Sunday, October 20

An excellent opportunity to get a fresh cup of hot coffee and delicious kolaches or some of the other tasty treats on the Square, then sit down to watch one of the best little town parades in Texas which starts at 10:45 a.m. with Jamie Price as Parade Marshal and the 2002 East Texas District 13 La Grange Little League Major Baseball 12 year old Team Champions as Honorary Parade Marshals. After the parade, the Fayette Czech Singers and Dancers will perform in the gazebo on the Square. be served at 11:30 a.m. Beef and sausage to go at 10 a.m. The Museum and Precinct Courthouse will be open from about 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. for tours.

Arts and crafts booths will again be on the Square all day with all types of goodies. The auction starts at 1:30 p.m. and always has interesting items.

After the auction, the Jolly Texans will provide delightful music including polkas, waltzes, etc. for a street dance on the Square.

Ice cold refreshments will be sold on the Square with the proceeds to benefit Courthouse Restoration.

Also on Sunday, there will be new exciting entertainment for children of all ages in the Laser Maze where they will be able to play with focused light waves similar to those in the Star Wars adventure-type movies. There will also be some fun games for the adults as well.

The Fayetteville Chamber of Commerce invites everyone to the town's celebration where the event will be held—rain or shine. This is a great opportunity to visit this unique town and to see why Everybody Loves Fayetteville.

The proceeds of this event will be used for community activities and further development of SPJST hall and park.

18, Elgin reports on August meeting Lodge

President Mike Mogonye opened the meeting on August 20, 2002 with the Pledge of Allegiance and a moment of prayer for all our SPJST members. Roll call had all officers present. Board members Johnny Vrabel and Donnie Cannon had excused absences.

Diane read the minutes of the last meeting and Glen gave the treasurer's report.

Ruby gave the youth report. Our group did very well in the district competition. They brought many ribbons. We are very proud of you.

Keep up the good work.

Charles gave the bar report and thanked everyone who helped work.

With all the rentals that we have, we need a lot of help. Call Charles and volunteer to help. It's a lot of fun, and you help your SPJST. If you don't like working in the bar, Irene could use your help. We just don't realize how much time Irene and Charles

spend at the hall. They need our help and support.

We had several repairs that had to be done at the lodge—the front door needed to be-replaced; the unit in the cooler had to be replaced; and we had a plumbing problem in the kitchen.

Thanks to all the guys who took the time to take of all the problems— Mike Mogonye, Arthur Weisner, Jim Mogonye, Johnny Vrabel, Donnie Cannon, Glen Matetzschk, and Charles Wilson. Walter Bartosh brought some samples of flooring.

We need to replace the front carpet.

Our hall was built in the '70s so we know that we will need repairs.

Get well cards were sent to Glen Kreig and Marie Weisner. A sympathy card was sent to Floyd and Cybaline Felfe.

We had a workday again on July 30. Thanks to all who helped. I don't know if I can name all who helped so I'll just say thanks to all!

Janell Mogonye brought Ronald McDonald boxes to collect can tabs.

They are collecting old greeting cards and plastic bags. If you wish you may bring these items to the meeting, and she will pick them up and deliver them.

We are planning a family day of fun and activity in October. Mark your calendar October 20 and watch the mailbox for details. We want all SPJST members to know that we appreciate them. Come out and see how your hall is being kept. You might have some good ideas for future growth.

25, Ennis welcomes new member Lodge

Landon Pierce Lipscomb was born on June 21, 2002 at 1:07 p.m.

He weighed seven pounds, 3.8 ounces and was 20 inches long.

Miss Texas, Vrazels to headline Lodge 24, Cyclone Czech Heritage Day Ladies and Gentlemen, Boys and Girls!

Come one, come all to the Fourth Annual Czech Heritage Day celebration at Flag Hall on Saturday, October 5 hosted by SPJST Lodge 24, Cyclone. Flag Hall is located 12 miles east of Temple, past Zabcikville.

The annual celebration is a spirited tribute to Czech heritage and culture in Texas. Establishing a sense of community was very important to early Czechs in Texas. It still is and that's the whole idea of Czech Heritage Day — bringing people together.

Doors open at 2 p.m. for the event which will include a Czech-English polka mass, public dance and a fireworks display. Special guests of honor and performer at this year's celebration will be the recently crowned Miss Texas 2002 Lisa Dalzell of Magnolia, Texas. The recently crowned SPJST State King and Queen are also planning to attend.

At 5 p.m., attendees of all denominations are invited to attend the Czech polka mass with music by Vrazels Polka Band. Following the polka mass, the Vrazels will play for a public dance from 7 to 10:30 p.m. Tickets for the evening dance will be $5 per person and ages 13 and under will be admitted free. The kitchen will be open.

As in previous years, the big fireworks display will begin shortly after 9 p.m. This is always a crowd pleaser and this year's show should be no exception. A prize drawing will also be held. Watch your Vestnik for details as the date approaches.

Dear Brothers and Sisters, The September regular lodge meeting was held on Sunday, September 8, 2002 at 2 p.m. at Seaton Star Hall.

President Edwin Pechal brought in the flags and led the Pledge of Allegiance.

We remained standing for a moment of silent prayer for the deceased members—Brothers Elmer Skrabanek, Frank Bartek, and for friends, Kevin Dohnalik and Jerry D. Schiller, and for all victims of the 9-11, 2001 in New York, Washington, and in Pennsylvania. Deepest sympathy to the survivors who are grieving for their loved ones.

State Fraternal Activities Coordinator (SFAC) Gladys Yates wrote about the excellent barbecue cookoff coverage of our event. District Two President Kathy Fritz wrote of the line-up of the fall meeting at Star Hall on September 15 and of the lodges to pick hosts for the spring and fall meetings.

Planning for the Centennial President Pechal brought up the SPJST Lodge 47 centennial celebration set for Sunday, June 1, 2003. A meeting was called for on Tuesday, September 10 at 7 p.m. for an organizational meeting in which 31 interested members were present. Ideas were talked about to bring together a great gathering of members and friends to celebrate 100 years of continued progress.

Second Vice President Beth Rabroker gave her report on the various trips that are being planned by SFAC Gladys Yates.

The chairpersons all gave their monthly reports and Gladys Marek gave her treasurer's report.

Brother Frank Klinkovsky, District Two Director, gave his report on the interest rates on loans which everyone should take advantage of. He also gave an update of our membership for the year thus far. The goal for the state was 2,100 applications, and Brother Gene McBride is hoping 2,500 will be reached.

The audit of all books is set for October 9 at 7 p.m., and the second meeting about the celebration is set for October 8 at 7 p.m.

There was no old business. The new business was to donate $100 to the district meeting and also $100 to the victims of the Prague floods.

Brother Louis Kohutek had written a letter to resign his position of Entertainment Chairman on the private rentals because of his back problems.

There was a special meeting of the board of trustees and the rentals were divided up so the trustees will finish this year.

Those celebrating birthdays in September were Beth Rabroker, Nancy Meier, and Lowvica Lucko.

Lodge 48, Beyersville hosts progressive "42" tourney October 19 The SPJST Lodge 48, Beyersville will progressive "42" Tournament on Saturday, October 19, 2002. Registration fee is $10 and includes the noon meal, snacks, and prizes. Registration begins at 8:15 a.m., and we plan to begin playing at 9:15 a.m.

Fifteen games will be played with a time limit of 20 minutes per game.

The tournament should end around 4:30 p.m. We especially invite SPJST members, but anyone is welcome.

You do not need a partner as all players will draw numbers and be seated accordingly for the first round.

The two winners will move to the next table and split up and play with the losers who remain at that table.

There will be no head table, thus all winners will move. We will use the same rules that the SPJST uses. We ask that players please pre-register so we can determine the food needs.

However, it is not a must to pre-register.

Lodge 80, Holland hosts ambulance benefit dinner September 29 Lodge 80, Holland will be hosting a benefit dinner for the Holland Fire Department Ambulance Service on Sunday, September 29, 2002.

The meal will include sausage, potatoes, green beans, cole slaw, bread, and tea. Serving will be from 11 a.m. until sold out. Plates to go will also be available.

Lodge 92, Fort Worth Ladies Circle met on September 10, 2002. President Linda Lewis called the meeting to order followed by the recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance with 28 ladies and six men present. Linda has good news of her recent surgery and is doing very well.

SPJST Travel Group Trip to Kinder, Louisiana on October 24-25. This trip is being organized for lodges primarily in a Districts Five, Six and Seven. The cost is $35 each and a minimum number for trip is 36. The bus will leave Lodge 79, Corpus Christi on Thursday, 24 October 2 at 7 a.m.s It will then stop in Victoria and Houston. Arrival time at the Coushatta Casino is set for 2:30 p.m. The group will leave Coushatta Casino for the return trip on Friday, October 25 at 4 p.m.

Roxy Bertrand donated blood and Polly Bayer bought two cakes at the benefit fund raiser for member Tim Svoboda. A motion was made by Bob Bayer to donate our August charity donation to the Tim Svoboda benefit fund. The motion was seconded by Liz Bielefield. Motion carried.

A motion was made by Oscar Korus to donate the September charity donation to the Floresville Fire Department.

Youth Leader Report — Youth Leader Pruski reported that there were 10 youth and four adults at today's meeting. Five youth and three adults went on the Splashtown outing on August 24 and had a great time. The youth club will have no float in the Peanut Festival this year, as there were only two youth available to ride.

A motion was made by Diane Korus that the lodge have Queen Kristy Anderson and Duchess Hope Bayer represent us in the Peanut Festival parade. The motion was seconded by Roxy Bertrand. Motion carried.

Old Business Peanut Festival — There was much discussion on this annual event. We will be painting the trailer on September 14 at 1 p.m.

The District Seven Fall Meeting, will be on November 3 and everything

Lodge 139 of Danbury held its September meeting Wednesday, September 4, 2002 at E. J.'s Restaurant. Members gave the Pledge of Allegiance after which the minutes of the last meeting were read and approved.

There were 16 members present with Linda Vrazel as a new member this month.

In the Vision 2002 Goal program, Lodge 139 placed third in the top 20.

The plans for District Five Fall Meeting to be held September 15, 2002 at the Skrabanek Park in Danbury were discussed.

Members voted to change the meeting time to 5:30 p.m. until further notice.

148, El Maton reports on August meeting Lodge

Lodge 148, El Maton met on August 25, 2002 at 2 p.m. at the Blessing Volunteer Fire Department.

David Zielonka, President, lead in the Pledge of Allegiance. The minutes were read and accepted. The financial report was read and accepted.

The final touches were discussed for the District Six Fall Meeting. The lodge will need members to help with parking and setting up the horseshoe grounds, and setting up inside the hall.

Also, each lodge member is asked to bring a dessert to the district meeting, if you can.

The lodge will have a cook-off team to defend the Traveling Trophy at the District Six Barbecue Cook-off on September 14. The team will enter the bean, chicken, pork, and beef categories.

Wednesday, September 18, 2002—VESTNIK/13 ed Blake Zielonka with a prize basket that he won when he entered the Flag Contest in June. Little Blake was very happy to receive his prize.

Fraternal and community activities were discussed. Diana Johnson will attend the planning meeting for the District Six Cook-off for David Zielonka because he will not be able to attend. The meeting was adjourned at 3 p.m. Afterwards, everyone enjoyed having some home-made chocolate ice cream that Mike had brought. He did a wonderful job on the ice cream, and everyone left the meeting full and happy.

Lodge 172, Pasadena reports on August meeting After the Pledge of Allegiance and a moment of silent prayer for the sick and departed, the meeting called to order at 7 p.m. by President Robert Mayfield.

Roll Call showed everyone present except Treasurer Tennie Walla, Trustee Art Wiederhold, and Youth Leader Adeena Reyes.

Since no errors were found in either the regular or executive meeting minutes, they were approved as printed.

Secretary Josephine Mayfield read

the 2002 Vision update which stated that our quota is 30. We have 17 new apps. We have 16 new members. She also read a letter from Lodge 6 stating that the lodge is hosting its centennial celebration on September 8, 2002, and they were asking us to buy an ad to be placed in the souvenir booklet which will depicting the legacy of the lodge building throughout the years. Robert asked for a vote to put an ad in the booklet. A motion was made by Brother Zella to buy a one-fourth page ad at a cost of $35. Motion was seconded by Sister Johnson. Motion approved.

Robert has received several letters one of which was from the Sam Houston Area Council of Boy Scouts of America requesting a donation. A motion was made by Sister Johnson that we donate $25 to the Boy Scouts.

Motion was seconded by Brother Wilkerson. Motion approved.

Robert also read a letter from the Pasadena Livestock Show and Rodeo asking us to participate in the rodeo parade. It was suggested that we ask the youth to participate in the rodeo and represent our lodge. This letter will be given to the Youth Leader Adeena Reyes. He read an invite from the Wheelhouse inviting us to a barbecue dinner and auction being held on September 27 at the Jimmy Burke Activity Center. The Wheelhouse is a house for men with drug and alcohol addictions. He also received a letter from Harris County Commissioner Precinct Two Candidates Forum inviting us to meet with the candidates on September 26, 2002 at University of

Vice President Weldon Wilkerson stated that Kathy Tompkins with the Texas Yoga and Ayurveda Institute on Vista Road sent us a letter requesting the use of our parking lot for a benefit that they are having for the Rose. At the executive meeting, the board agreed to let them use the parking lot.

Financial Secretary Henrietta Krenek stated that she made a deposit of $6 giving us a balance of $1,272.

She also stated that we have two new members. They are Morgan Kelly Zamora, 11501 Dumas, Houston, Texas 77034/Sales Rep Adeena Reyes; and Katheryn Payton Sefcik, P.O. Box 44, El Indio, Texas 78860/Sales Rep. Vicki Dressler. A motion was made by Brother Zella to accept the two new members. Motion was seconded by Brother Stokley. Motion approved.

There was one name change from Linda Linton to Linda Myers.

Entertainment Chairperson Josephine Mayfield stated that they had a real good dance on August 3. In spite of the bad weather, we had 199 attending the dance. We had a very good band. Everyone loved the band and asked her to have him back more often.

No one left the hall without saying something good about Moses Rangel of Texas Highway Band.

Jo stated that it had been requested that we hire the band as a house band.

Jo told them we would have to raise the price of admission to $6 if we hire them as our house band. Moses originally was asking $650. She talked him into to playing for $450 so he could get his foot in the door. She said that he might ask for the $650 if we make the band our house band since that is what he was asking for originally.

Jo stated that if the band is hired, we would put them on the first Saturday of the month and put The Texas Roadrunners and Tommy Cloud on every other third Saturday. Jo also said that she had kept the September 21 date open for The Texas Highway Band, but Moses told her he was supposed to play a benefit for the children with cancer on that date. Therefore, she has hired a new band called the Forever County Band or The Chip Nall Band.

Robert stated that he had gotten a call from Paul Kamas, the gentleman who mows our lot in back of the lodge.

Mr. Kamas told Robert that the city had put the lodge lot on its list to be mowed by the city and wanted to know what was going on. Robert said he told Mr. Kamas to mow the lot. We don't want the city to mow it for us. He informed everyone about the continuing education class for sales reps. being held at Lodge 88 on September 10 at 6 p.m.

He also told everyone that Don Miller of April Air replaced the coils in the walk-in cooler Monday. He also informed everyone that we have received the check for the oil lease in LaMarque.

Robert reminded everyone about the District Five Fall Meeting in Danbury on Sunday, September 15 and asked if we would like to donate ten $5 bills to be used as door prizes. A motion was made by Brother Zella to donate ten $5 bills to be used as door prizes. motion was seconded by Brother Stokley.

Motion approved.

Robert wished everyone with a birthday in September a happy birthday.

Robert asked our guest, District Five Field Representative Lynn Johnsen , if she would like to say a few words.

Lynn told us about Vision 2002.

It was decided to have a work day Monday, September 9 since Monday, September 2 is Labor Day. A request was made by Bobbye Johnson that we make a basket of soup, tea, coffee, etc. of some kind and auction it off at the Harris County Convention Center on September 24. Motion was made by Brother Wilkerson.

Motion was seconded by Sister Dressler.

Robert reminded everyone that the work day would be September 9; the executive meeting on September 11; and the regular meeting on September 25, and it is a covered dish meeting.

Door prizes were won by Mary Holub, Julius Zella, Weldon Wilkerson, Henrietta Krenek, Harold Wolf, Jimmy Weidig, Irene Hogan, and Arnold Sefcik.

Lodge 196, Houston-West reports on August meeting Lodge 196, Houston-West (Cypress) met on August 25, 2002. President Marvin Schulz opened the meeting with the Pledge of Allegiance followed by the roll call of officers. All were present except our parliamentarian, Cliff Netterville. The minutes were read and approved.

Youth Director Robert Castillo thanked the lodge for the special day the children enjoyed at the Youth Achievement Day. Robert informed everyone of the special night the children would be having at Astroworld in September, instead of the Fright Night they had been discussing.

More discussion was held concerning our anniversary celebration to be held November 24 at the lodge Karl quoted the prices for advertising in his subdivision newsletter, which goes out to many surrounding subdivisions.

Mail-outs and improved signage facing Huffmeister was discussed also. Carol Philip will sing the national anthem.

The meal will be furnished by Chris Weatherly, and will include barbecue, potatoes, cole slaw, beans, pickles and onions. We are asking for donations for the many prize drawings that will be held. We will be recognizing all past and present officers for their dedication to the SPJST. The evening will finish up with a dance from 4 to 8 p.m.

We need help for all the committees that must be formed to organize this venture and make it a success. Please come to the next meeting to offer any help you may be able to provide.

Lynn Johnsen updated the Vision 2100 report. Vision 2100 has been changed to Vision 2500 because of its success.

Larry Pflughaupt informed us of the planned trip to Coushatta on October 24 and 25. The cost will be $35/person and includes breakfast, two meals, and the hotel. Larry also talked about the

Marvin's been working hard. He recently had 54 loads of dirt delivered to the lodge. We had to pay $30/load for 40 loads only. A motion was made and passed to allow $200 to be paid to spread the dirt.

Valley Czech organizations sponsoring Czech language course Brazos

The Brazos Valley Czech Heritage Society (BVCHS) with The Czech Educational Foundation of Texas (CEFF) are pleased to sponsor a 14week Czech language course which

started TuesC:y, September 17, 2002.

This 14-week course is being structured to concentrate on conversational Czech for both beginners and more advanced Czech speakers, and is open to anyone who is interested.

The course will consist of 14 weekly hour-and-a-half sessions and will meetin every Tuesday rom 7-8:30 p.m., with a one hour personalized help session from 6-7 p.m. Classes will end on Tuesday evening, December 17, 2002. Late registrations will be accepted through Tuesday evening, October 1.

Classes are being held in Room 104 of the College Station Conference Center located at 1300 George Bush Drive, College Station, Texas.

Tuition is $35 per person for the entire 14-week course. Instructional materials will be provided and no textbook is required. There is no charge for parking at the College Station Conference Center.

Reunions Markert Family You, your family, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren are invited to attend the sixth annual Andreas Markert family reunion on Saturday, September 28, 2002. It will be held in the air-conditioned Lincoln Community Center in Lincoln, Texas, located one block off Highway 21 in Lincoln. The reunion is hosted by the Gerhard Markert family and his descendants.

There will be a potluck meal at 12 p.m. Please bring a dish or dessert of your choice. Coffee, tea, Kool-aid, eating utensils, plates, and cups will be provided. Pokorny Family The annual Pokorny reunion will be held Saturday, September 28, 2002 at the American Legion Hall in Murphy Park. Registration begins at 8 a.m.

District Two Youth Club Members Enjoy Summer Fun Outing July 8, 2002 • Summer Fun • Belton, Texas The District Two Summer Social held at Summer Fun USA in Belton was very well attended. We had a fantastic turn out enjoying the pool, lazy river, slides, food and visiting. I was so pleased to observe the fun that everyone was having.

Leaders-in-Training (LITs) and chaperones met to discuss camp which at that time was only a few weeks away.

What are LAM Discovery Hunts?

The SPJST Library, Archives and Museum (LAM) is located in the basement of the SPJST Home Office at 520 North Main Street in Temple.

LAM Discovery Hunts are scavenger hunts through the Library, Archives and Museum. Youth members can earn a maximum of 50 points for each LAM Discovery Hunt completed.

LAM Discovery Hunt Rules • Youth members obtain LAM Discovery Hunt sheets from the Museum Curator when they visit the LAM in Temple.

• LAM Discovery Hunt sheets must include the youth member's name and lodge number.

LAM Discovery Hunt sheets must be completed by May 31 to receive points for the current year's point contest.

• LAM Discovery Hunt sheets must be returned to the Museum Curator on the day of the LAM visit.

Dear Readers, The youth held its monthly meeting, Sunday, September 8.

We discussed Westfest and the upcoming events. There will be a social on Friday, September 20. Cakes are to be taken to rest home on Wednesday, October 2. A social will also be held on Friday, October 4.

On Sunday, October 6 the youth will honor the grandparents. Due to our lodge hall 100th anniversary, we were

unable to celebrate Grandparent's Day. The youth will prepare the meal for the grandparents. We invite all of you grandparents to come out and join us Sunday, October 6. The youth need to be at the hall by 4 p.m.

We also discussed the upcoming Fall District Three Fall Meeting and Christmas ornament contest.

Next meeting will be Sunday, October 6 at 4 p.m.

Lodge 17, New Tabor Youth Club member enjoys YAD contests In July, I participated in Youth Achievement Day (YAD) for the first time. My mom and I weren't really sure what to expect, but we have learned a lot from entering in the different categories. I entered in four categories: junior group talent, pictorial art, food, and photography.

We had to practice a lot for the group talent, and I think we tried real

hard to remember everything we were suppose to do. My art picture was of my paw-paw and me fishing at his tank in the flat bottom boat. Mom helped me bake a honey crunch pecan pie that dad said was really good with ice cream. My photo entry was of my cousin, Jereme, knee-boarding at Lake Somerville. Mom says he's a real dare-devil, and that the picture I took shows that real well. I got second place for the picture, and that's the entry I'm most proud of.

YAD was fun, and I plan to enter again next year. I better start thinking about what I want to do.

17, New Tabor Youth Club member has a blast at camp Lodge

This was my first year to go to district camp and I had a blast. We got to swim everyday, do crafts, and I got to go on my first canoe ride.

The initiation for first time campers was a lot of fun. My mom couldn't believe I did it. She says she is going to have to go next time to see about all this fun. I hope she does.

Thank you Ms. Susan. I'm glad to be a part of SPJST, and I can't wait for next year to go back to camp.

84, Dallas Junior Youth Club members readying for Czech Fest, state fair performance Lodge

Dear Readers, I am so glad that September is here, my birthday is on the 23rd. I am excited because my mommy has planned a bowling party! Mark your calendars for Sunday September 22.

This is the date for Lodge 84's annual Czech Fest.

It is always a big day for me. There are lots of games to play and a cake walk and country store, not to mention other booths to entertain you.

Lunch will be served around 11:30 a.m., I think, and Al Vanek's Band will be playing polkas and waltzes to dance to.

State Fair Performance Also, we are practicing for Czech Day at the State Fair of Texas on Sunday October 6. Make plans to come and watch the many circles dance.

The Little Red Handkerchief will also be performed. Kolaches and other Czech cuisine will be available for you to munch on. Mama Bessie Petr always has a booth nearby!

The youth have a lot of things planned for the coming months, so I hope to keep you posted.

84, Dallas Junior Youth Club hosts bake sale Lodge

Dear Readers, September has just started and it has already been very busy for me.

On Saturday September 7, the Junior Youth of Lodge 84, Dallas held a bake sale at Rudolph's Meat Market.

Thank you to Rudolph's for letting us hold our sale there. We were very successful in raising money for our youth club.

Then on Monday, September 9, the Junior Youth had their monthly meeting. We also were treated to a Pizza Party beforehand. Thank you Jennifer and Richard Andreason for picking up the pizza. It was delicious. We were also glad to see Brady Cloutman at the meeting. He took an unexpected trip to the hospital, and we are glad to know he is doing much better now.

We are also practicing learning the Beseda for the Czech Heritage Day to be held on Sunday, October 6 during the State Fair of Texas. I hope you all can attend. It is sure to be a lot of fun.

We are also making plans for a Community Service Project as well as a Halloween Party. More details to come later.

Dear Brothers and Sisters SPJST Lodge 84, Dallas Junior Youth Club's (JYC) September 9 meeting was called to order at 7:15 p.m. by President Desiree Christman.

Flag Bearer Lauren Cloutman led the members in the Pledge of Allegiance and our President, Desiree Christman, along with Youth Leader Ms. Jennifer, recited the SPJST Youth Club Motto for the members.

Eleven members were present along with eight adults. We had one new member present. Please welcome to our club, Jackson Duffy, the son of Kelli and Justin Duffy of Richardson and grandparents, Richard and Jeri Kopecky of Dallas.

The minutes were read and accepted with one change: Alex's Birthday was celebrated August 11, not Ashley's. The treasurer read our current balance, with $322.10 to be added from our September 7 fund raiser.

This month's social was held before our meeting. We had pizza and soft drinks.

Old business discussed since our last meeting was the Annual Spaghetti Dinner and bingo on August 7, the Junior Youth Club Meeting and pool party on August 15 at Vicki Simm's house, the Princess Ball on August 17 and Beseda practices for the upcoming State Fair of Texas.

New business discussed was the

Czech Fest to be held on Sunday, September 22 beginning at 11:30 a.m.

The junior youth will sponsor and man the games of bean bag toss, face painting, ring toss, go fish, balloon darts, and several more along with a cake walk. Dancing will begin at 3 p.m.

Other new business discussed was dancing the Beseda at the State Fair of Texas on October 6 and our Junior Youth Club Hay Ride/Pumpkin Patch and Marshmallow Roast in late October. Date to be announced.

Youth members enjoyed pizza and Hawaiian Punch courtesy of the JYC. Members celebrating birthdays in September will be Elisabeth Cowan on September 23. Elisabeth will be seven years old.

The next Youth Club meeting will be announced at a later date. More information will follow.

A door prize drawing was held and Lauren Cloutman won a SPJST Frisbee.

With no further business to discuss, the meeting was adjourned at 7:40 p.m.

107, Floresville Youth Club reports on September meeting

186, CaIdvvell Youth Club participates in first district YAD Lodge

On July 21, 2002 we had our District One Youth Achievement Day (YAD). It was held at Lodge 186 in Caldwell. For the youth club of Lodge 186, it was the first YAD we had a chance to participate in. Our youth group competed in different events such as individual talent, handicrafts, constructed items, photography, pictorial art, sewing, science and education, hobby kits, and foods.

Lodge 186 had two royalty contestants who represented us. They were Erin Hughes whose dutches was Casey Brinkman and Tana Guess whose duchess was Brittanty Bledsoe. We want to wish Zachary Janca the best of luck in state competition. Zachary placed first in pictorial art. At the conclusion of the evening, we had a birthday cookie for Chelsey Brinkman and Shelby Wagnone who celebrated their birthdays on this day.

District One Camp On July 6, 2002 the youth club from Lodge 186 departed Caldwell in route to its first SPJST summer camp. Our youth group had 16 members attend camp. It was a lot of fun. Most of our members enjoyed horseback riding the most. All the other events were fun, too.

We would like to thank our lodge for all the support it gave us. We would also like to thank the chaperones who went to the camp with us. Finally thank you to the all the Home Office personnel who put the entire event together for us.

Schlitterbahn Trip On Tuesday, July 30, 2002, the youth from District One went on a trip to Schlitterbahn Water Park and Resort. Lodge 186 Youth Club had 22 kids attending this event. We all had fun. We would like to thank all the members from Lodge 186 for paying the expenses for all the kids to go.

We would also like to thank our Youth Leader Michelle Mendez and all her helpers for going to this event with us, supervising us and keeping us safe.

We would also like to thank Susan Skrabanek for organizing and planning the event. We had so much fun.
