Santa Claus Is Coming to Town SPJST members and friends are invited to enjoy a festive evening at the SPJST Holiday Open House on Tuesday, December 3. Activities commence at 7:30 p.m., after the Temple Christmas Parade.

SPJST welcomes Ifou to holiday open house The SPJST Holiday Open House is sure to get you into the Christmas spirit! You and your family are invited to a festive holiday evening in Temple on Tuesday, December 3, 2002. The evening begins with the Temple Christmas Parade at 6:30 p.m. on Central Avenue.

The parade is always a beautiful one with many lighted floats. SPJST will have several entries in the parade.

Following the parade, everyone is invited to the SPJST Home Office Holiday Open House from 7:30 to 9 p.m. The Home Office is located at 520 North Main Street in Temple.

The Open House will include live holiday harp and guitar music, Christmas caroling by the Temple High School Polyphonics and horse-drawn carriage rides. Salado's Tablerock Festival will present "A Christmas Carol" selection at 8 p.m. SPJST State King Jake Holland and State Duke Michael Jurik, both of Lodge 25, Ennis, and State Queen Marchele Olds and State Duchess Desiree Christman, both of Lodge 84, Dallas, will greet guests.

Santa, Mrs. Claus and their elves will be taking Christmas wishes. The Open House will also feature children's activities, including face painting, McGruff the Crime Dog, and a

puppet show. Guests are also invited to take an old-fashioned horse-drawn carriage ride around the block.

Refreshments will be served.

Throughout the holiday season, the Home Office will feature the Youth Christmas Tree, which will be decorated with ornaments designed and created by SPJST Youth Club members across Texas.

Museum Comes to Life The SPJST Museum will also display a Czech Christmas tree with traditional Czech decorations. And, during the Open House, the museum will come to life with several areas featuring men and women who will be available to tell about different areas. A doctor, a farmer, a World War II veteran, a blacksmith, a musician, a cook, and a quilter will be featured. A traditional Czech Christmas dinner will also be on display. This will be a true learning experience for all ages.

The Home Office will also be sponsoring a toy drive through the holiday season. Toys will be donated to the local Santa Pal program to provide a memorable Christmas for economically disadvantaged families.

All toy donations will be greatly appreciated.

Like an Old Friend Something Old ...

The Vestnik probably isn't the fanciest publication that comes into your home. Mostly black ink on inexpensive newsprint. Homegrown stories and photos in each issue. Some are good. And, of course, some could be better. But that's like anything else: There's always room for improvement.

The Vestnik is like an old friend.

Someone who comes around once a week and always has something to say. And with it, a handful of snapshots for you to see.

In this season of Thanksgiving, I wanted you to know what an honor it has been for me to serve as your Vestnik editor. I'm going on 11 years now . . . Long enough to have watched lots of boys and girls fill every stage of the youth program and then scamper out on their own. Long enough, too, to have known many of our lifelong fraternalists and to have grieved when they died.

The Vestnik. It's 90 years old this year. I've got to tell you: I'm not half that old and some weeks, it's all I can do just to keep up! Actually, this is a bit of belated birthday acknowledgement. The first issue was published on September 1, 1912 by Brother Frank Fabian in Hallettsville, Texas.

SPJST members believed then — just as now — in the necessity of effective and regular communication between all parts of the organization.

In a very real way, the newspaper has been a builder of images and a shaper of opinions and attitudes about the fraternal activities, insurance and. other benefits available to members.

On a weekly basis, the Vestnik delivers a steady flow of news on a wide range of organizational and cultural topics. In addition, each issue provides members with a forum for sharing news and views on matters of organizational importance Something New ...

Through two world wars, the Great Depression and decades of national and international tension and triumph, the Vestnik continues to evolve to reflect the changing needs and special concerns of SPJST members. We'll be doing that again come January 1 when the Vestnik goes online. That's right! If all goes according to schedule, the January 1, 2003 Vestnik — in addition to the newsprint version — will also be available to Internet users via PDF format on publication date via the spjst.com website! I put an exclamation mark at the end of that last sentence because I know that a lot of you — especially in the urban areas and out-of-state sometimes receive your Vestnik dreadfully late. Oh, and by the way, the online version will be in color!

What's that going to cost the SPJST? Mainly my time. I already have the software in place and have

Converting the hard copy to a digital image is a fairly simple procedure. The wonders of technology!

Like the sun in the morning and the moon at night, you know that the Vestnik will be there. By the way, I did some checking on this and nowhere can I find in the Vestnik's 90 years of publication, has there ever been a missed issue. That translates right around 4,500 issues. Approximately 512 of those have been under my watch.

In all that time, one thing has never ceased to amaze me. And that is the fact that never — not once — since becoming your editor, has there ever been a week when I didn't have enough — or way more than enough — text and photos to fill an issue.

That reflects very well on the membership and especially on our correspondents. Thank you for your diligence, your patience and continued input.

FROM THE SUPREME LODGE

Resolution of Respect WHEREAS, the Supreme Lodge SPJST and the SPJST membership were saddened to learn of the death of Julius Victor Tupa; and, WHEREAS, Brother Tupa was born in Moravia, Texas on July 22, 1931. Brother Tupa left surviving him to mourn his departure, his wife, Marie Tupa; his daughters, Gayle Boney and Tina Stankus; his brother, Willie Tupa; four grandchildren; and a host of relatives, friends and neighbors, all of whom with all the members of the Supreme Lodge SPJST desire to record their sorrow at the death on October 5, 2002 of Brother Tupa who worked harmoniously and diligently for the good of the Society for many years through his love of music and as a staunch promoter of the Czech heritage.

WHEREAS, Brother Tupa served many organizations being a charter member of St. Jerome Catholic Church, founder and editor of the Texas Polka Newspaper, founder and president of TPMA, charter member of P.O.L.K. of A. Chapter 1 of Texas Lifetime Achievement member of both the American Legion Post 654 and VFW Post 8790, member of Knights of Columbus Council 4550, SPJST Lodge 175, Rosenberg, and the Czech Heritage Society.

WHEREAS, all members of the Supreme Lodge SPJST bear willing testimony that Brother Tupa will be forever loved, remembered and missed by his family and by the numerous cultural, musical, and benevolent organizations he supported.

WHEREAS, Brother Tupa was a good man who will be missed and remembered by his many friends mourning his passing.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that a copy of this resolution be tendered to the family as an expression of heartfelt sympathy in their bereavement; one copy sent to the Vestnik for publication.

SPJST Library, Archives, and Museum reviews August, September, October activities The museum received the following donations in the months of August, September, and October: 24 Czech books, and one Czech/English Dictionary—donated by Stanley L. Pavlas of Belle Chasse, Louisiana; four authentic Czech kroj (costumes) from Czechoslovakia and one female mannequin—donated by Willa Mae Cervenka of Waco; Antique lace dress from the 1920s era that belonged to Albina Haluska—donated by her niece, Mary Mikeska Hosek of Houston; Czech hymnal and Czech Bible— donated by Diane Taylor of Temple; Svbach Bible—a Czech Bible written in German script—donated by Joe Kohut of Temple; 15 children's Czech books—donated by Vera Donner of Salado; Czech Bible and 10 Czech books—donated by Charles V. Frank of San Diego, California.

We thank each of you for remembering the SPJST Library, Archives and Museum through your donations and encourage you and yours to stop by and visit us when in the neighborhood.

In the months of August, September, and October, 331 visitors toured the museum. This included the First Baptist Church Seniors Group of Little River; third graders from St. Mary's Catholic School of Temple; third graders from St. Mary's Catholic School of West, and first and second graders from Clifton Park, East Ward, Fowler, Haybranch, and Haynes Elementary Schools all of Killeen. Also touring were visitors from Alabama, California, Georgia, Indiana, Kansas, Louisiana, Michigan, Missouri, North Carolina, Virginia, Washington, West Virginia, Canada, Czech Republic, and England.

As you can see, we have a large

representation of our country and beyond who have heard or read about the museum and have chosen to pay us a visit. We appreciate each of our patrons from all walks of life and hope we leave you with more knowledge and appreciation of our great past.

The Traveling Mini-Museum was on display at the Temple Chamber of Commerce Business Showcase and Seminar at the Mayborn Center and at SPJST Lodge 6, Cottonwood for its 100th Anniversary Celebration of the hall held at the lodge. Both events were held in September.

As I am at this time writing my report to the Vestnik, it is the first day of November so that means Czech Heritage Month in Texas is now a thing of the past. I hope many of you were able to participate in some of the events that were put on by the lodges and other places in observance of Czech Heritage Month. But please don't wait until next October to learn something or participate in an event emphasizing Czech heritage. One opportunity that is available year round is the museum right here in the SPJST Home Office.

Holiday Open House As we tour many individuals and groups throughout the week, I have never known anyone to leave disappointed—only amazed at what we have. I hope you or your group will give us a call and book a date with us.

Speaking of dates, the museum will once again come alive on December 3 after the Temple Christmas parade.

We'll have people situated in all areas of the museum to help give you a feel for what it would have been like to experience life in the days of yesteryear. You'll be reading more about Open House later. For now, please feel free to give us a call or stop by anytime. We want to serve you in the best way we can.

Education and Nature Center seeks assistance To The Lodges and Members of SPJST: As we look to close out another calendar year at the SPJST Education and Nature Center (ENC), we again thank all members for your support and generosity through our first two years of organization.

As I write this letter asking lodges and members for donations to help the ENC grow to be a viable donor to the members of the SRIST, I look back at

previous conventions that would not approve this motion over the years and the great challenge that we, the members, have accepted is our second century of growth in the SPJST Society today. It is only through organization and member participation that any of the goals we work toward can be accomplished.

Please be generous if at all possible at this time or anytime in the future that you are looking for a worthwhile investment in the SPJST future.

This was first State Golf Tournament and we all had a great time. If you missed the tournament this year, don't miss it in 2003.

The weather tried to be ugly, it was cloudy, drizzly and cool every morning, but as the day proressed the weather got better but I can't say the same about thegolfing. I had a great time harassing the golfers. When they saw me coming they knew the camera would be flashing. I had a vey good chauffeur for the golf cart, Diana Engelke form Lodge 66, Waco. She carried me around the golf course, but if we came to the end of a cart path, she would make a new path. She followed our SPJST golfers.

Mungia's Bar-B-Que in Heidenhammer catered to all of our needs and wishes. The Texas/Oklahoma fans, left the golf course and went to Mungia's. Thomas provided them with an area to watch the game on television. We all had a very good meal and fellowship at the dinner.

Sunday was a very exciting day with the youth competing in the youth tournament. We have some vey talented future golfers in this group of youth. State Youth Director Melanie Zavodny provided the results to the youth competition in the November 6 Vestnik.

To all who came out and didn't play, I look forward to getting you registered in 2003. If you didn't attend, you missed a weekend of fun and good SPJST fellowship. Around the State District Six thanks everyone for contributing to the success of the Annual Barbecue Cookoff and Festival Dear Vestnik Readers, The District Six Fourth Annual Barbecue Cookoff and Festival was held September 13 and 14, 2002.

Lodge 40. El Campo-Hillje hosted the event. Thanks so much to everyone who gave of their time to this very successful weekend!

A special thank you to Debbie and Glenn Sczech and Tria and Kris Svatek of Lodge 40 for chairing the cookoff and doing a fantastic job.

Lodge Letters Section Lodge 1, Fayetteville and Fayetteville C of C annual party December 8 The Fayetteville SPJST Lodge 1 and Fayetteville Chamber of Commerce will hold its annual combined Christmas party Sunday, December 8, 2002 at the SPJST hall beginning at 4 p.m. with social.

The lodge and the Chamber are providing baked ham and turkeys, dressing and cold refreshments.

15, Buckholts reporter recalls the life and times of Brother Joe Zajicek Lodge

Our November meeting was most enjoyable. Besides the usual lodge business, we had a guided tour of the recently renovated areas of the hall and then and a lively discussion on further needed reports to the kitchen, the roof, and replacing air-conditioners, and how to procure finances for same.

We had the usual drawing for door prizes while our ever diligent Virginia Williams readied the refreshments.

She is so resourceful that there is always so much food you can skip eating supper at home.

6/VESTNIK—Wednesday, November 27, 2002 poned until the January meeting.

It is with joyful anticipation that on Sunday, November 24, our venerable member, Joe Zajicek, will be celebrating his 95th birthday with a party at the hall. By the time you read this, the event will be history, and we'll know it was a great success.

Congratulations, Joe! Joe Zajicek deserves to be congratulated on having lived a long an productive life. He was the eldest child born to Joe and Caroline Ermis Zajicek of Buckholts. He spent his entire life in this area until he and his wife moved to Temple this year to be nearer to medical facilities.

He led a varied career as a mechanic, farmer, rancher, poultry man, farmer's gin manager, Ward's tire store manager and lastly, sand and gravel hauler from his pit. The latter was doing something out of force of habit, not of necessity.

First and foremost, the main reason is that he never smoked or drank. I don't mean he doesn't enjoy an occasional beer of a nip of something stronger, but never in excess.

His physical stamina has to be attributed to the fact that he was raised before the advent of junk food and when food preservatives and food additives were unknown. If a body is to endure, it has to have a sound beginning which comes from the foods we eat. I should know for I am from that era when our parents grocery list only included staples such as flour, sugar, salt, coffee, rice, dried beans, and English peas, and dried fruit such as apples and prunes.

nice (liver sausage), sauerkraut, Bohemian soul food, if you will. Of course, we also had milk, cream butter, eggs and homemade bread, corn bread and biscuits to fill the gaps in between. In the summer, we had beef from the beef club and all those garden vegetables, Irish potatoes in the spring and sweet potatoes and pumpkins in the fall.

There was always either beef or chicken noodle soup and kolaches on Sunday. That was all food that was simple but ample. Food that sure tightened your clutch—if you pardon the pun— since we're speaking of a future mechanic.

Today's kid might ask what we had for dessert during the week. Well, how about a slab of fresh baked brad lathered with cream or butter and topped with homemade molasses?!

Having that, who needed a McDonald's?

Obesity in those days was unknown thanks to a nutritious diet and farm work that provided a proper workout. To simply walk was also a way of life. We walked to school, to town, to grandma's, to neighbors, to dances and parties and to church . . . I mean everywhere. No wonder then, that Joe at 95 is fit and trim and can still dance a mean polka as well as a waltz.

Behind Every Good Man .. .

I saved the best for last: In the early 30s, Joe had the good sense, foresight or just plain luck—call it whatever you like—to marry a good woman, the former Lillie Roesler.

She is not only a good woman, but several years his junior sustaining him over the years. She proves the old adage that whether a man ends up with a nest egg or a goose egg depends on the chick he marries.

Need I say more!

17, New Tabor invites members to memorial service, Christmas party Lodge

Members of Lodge 17, New Tabor are cordially invited to attend the lodge memorial service and Christmas party on Sunday, December 1 at the New Tabor lodge hall.

20, Granger invites members to attend Christmas party December 8 Lodge

Lodge 20, Granger Christmas party will be held on Sunday, December 8, 2002 at 3 p.m. at the lodge hall in Granger.

Our officers cordially invite the officers of the Supreme Lodge and the Editor of the Vestnik to our party.

We will have a short meeting.

Our monthly meetings are held the first Monday of each month at 7 p.m. at the lodge hall.

Refreshments are served following the meetings. All members are invited to attend our monthly meetings.

The youth club, joined by everyone, will sing Christmas carols. We will have our annual 100 Pennies Drive for the SPJST youth scholarships that are given away each year. Door prizes will be given away. A supper consisting of ham and sausage will be served. Meat will be furnished, and each family is asked to bring two dishes, a salad, vegetables and/or dessert.

We are inviting all members and their families to come and have a good time and share the fellowship with one another through their membership in SPJST. Best wishes to all for a joyous, safe, and blessed holiday season.

25, Ennis reports on November meeting Lodge

Dear Readers, The regular monthly meeting was held on November 14, 2002 at 7:30 p.m. All officers were present. The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Johnnie Krajca. A moment of silence was held for Ella Hopkins. On the sick list were Douglas Martinek and Emil Marusak.

The previous lodge minutes were read by Secretary Pat Fowler. the financial report was given by Treasurer Cathy Krajca and Financial Secretary Kay Kovar. All reports were approved as given.

Fraternal Activities Coordinator Margaret Krajca reported on the tournaments scheduled for the coming year and reported on the 2002 incentive program for our lodge.

Youth Club Report President of the Youth Club Jake Holland was asked to report on the activities of the youth club. He presented Michael Jurik his award of a $150 savings bond for being a grand prize winner in the photography contest at the Texas Fraternal Congress in Austin. The youth club poster was also a first place winner.

Vice President Jim Holahan reported on the bookings for the rest of the year and the New Year's Eve dance that will be from 8:30 p.m. to 12:30 a.m. Music will be by Hank Thompson, Lonnie Dean and the Brazos Valley Boys. The tickets are on sale now by calling the hall (972) 875-8381.

New members were Joseph Spaniel and Jerry Holland.

Everyone enjoyed the barbecue sandwiches that Mildred and Eugene had prepared for us. Thanks to both of you.

Dear Members, Lodge Karel Jonas will hold its December monthly meeting and annual Christmas dinner on the 8th at the home of Brother Glenn and Sister Jeanette Kaminsky who have graciously offered their home for the occasion.

It is located in the Bernard Timbers Addition at 902 River Oaks Court in East Bernard.

The starting time will be 12:30 p.m.

It is asked that members, who plan to attend, bring either a side dish or a dessert item such as pastry, cookies, etc., for the meal. The meeting will convene at 12:30 with the Pledge of Allegiance, remembrance of departed members, grace given, and a recess taken for the meal. The meeting will reconvene after sufficient time for the meal.

November 10 Meeting Report The meeting convened with a quorum present.

Since there were some special items brought for the buffet luncheon in honor of Thanksgiving Day, the meeting opened with the Pledge of Allegiance, remembrance of departed members (one who just passed away), grace given by Brother Glenn Kaminsky and then recessed for it.

After everyone had sufficient time to eat, the meeting reconvened and the business at hand started. All reports were accepted as given. Old business was handled quickly and new business went rather fast until the subject of donations was brought up.

A dispute on the amount to be used for donations, percentage wise, became unclear, and this was tabled until the December meeting whereby the lodge president and lodge secretary will have some kind of ruling on this from the Supreme Lodge.

29, Taylor elects officers in November meeting Lodge

Taylor SPJST Lodge 29 held its meeting Sunday, November 10, 2002 at 4 p.m. The meeting was called to order by President Scott Green. The Pledge of Allegiance was recited. All the officers were present. The minutes of the last meeting were read by Jeana and Tammye gave the treasurer's report. There were 35 members present.

Those having birthdays in November are Elaine Machu, Irene Hamann, Charlie Flink, Edwin Adamek and Jerry Wayne Tallas. Mr. and Mrs. Charlie Flink had their 56th wedding anniversary in November.

We added five new members to our SPJST Lodge 29 membership.

The youth club made an appreciation speech for the money the lodge gave them.

We had the honor to present two of our 50-year pin award honorees— Dorothy Covett and Frank Kotrla.

We had a nice turn-out for the tarok tournament-40 players. All had a good noon meal and a good time.

Christmas Party December 8 We are having our Christmas party on December 8 at 3 p.m. with a covered dish meal to be served. The youth club will have door prizes to be given away.

As mentioned earlier, a 55-year member passed away. Frank Michulka, 83, was interred on Veteran's Day the 11th of November. Appropriate, in a way, for he was a World War II veteran.

The buffet luncheon went over well. It consisted of baked ham, side dishes, dessert items, and liquid refreshments of lemonade, iced tea, and Kona blend coffee.

Lodge 32, Victoria held its monthly meeting November 13 at the Victoria Electric Co-op Building. Plans were made for the December 11 Christmas party to be held at the Victoria Electric Co-op Building. 47, Seaton elects officers, trustees in November meeting Lodge

Dear Brothers and Sisters, The annual meeting of Lodge 47, Seaton was held on Sunday, November 3 at 1 p.m. with President Edwin Pechal presiding. Flag Bearers were Jerome Orsag and Leroy Dana who led the Pledge of Allegiance. We remained standing for a moment of silent prayer for our departed members Joe Daniel Dubcak, Albert L. Glaser, Jr., and Julia (Judy) Sirney.

Deepest sympathy to their surviving families, and they will be missed by so many friends and family.

Roll call of officers, trustees, and sales representatives was read by Secretary Adeline Kohutek. She also read the minutes of the October meeting and these were approved as read.

New members were Ann Marie Kaminsky, Irma Ann Klinkovsky, Helen M. Wiley, Heidi L. Bartek, and Leon Jezek, Sr. These are additional insurance certificates purchased.

Correspondence included a thank you card from the Joe Daniel Dubcak family for the flowers, a note about the training dates for the bartenders, and a letter from Gladys Yates thanking us for the donation to the golf tournament.

Officers' Reports President—thanks to Leroy Hanusch for supervising the floor tiles back of the bar and those who helped him. Looks real good. Edwin Vasicek read the board minutes.

Second Vice President Beth Rabroker reported the taroky tournament will be on January 25 instead of January 18; the FACs will meet on January 13 at our hall; the deer antler contest is on again this year; scholarship applications are now being accepted; and the open house at the Home Office after the Christmas parade in Temple on Tuesday, December 3 from 7:30 to 9 p.m.

Youth Leader Heidi Bartek reported that 43 youth members are in the youth club. They will present the Christmas program and memorial for our deceased members. They will be decorating turkeys at Heartland Nursing Home. The youth will have their Christmas party after the December 1 meeting.

New business included the upcoming annual Christmas party on Sunday, December 8 starting at 3 p.m. with memorial service, Christmas program and Santa Claus. Refreshment time at 4 p.m. Supper will be at 5 p.m. with turkey, dressing, and the trimmings.

Everyone is asked to bring salads, vegetables, or desserts. The turkeys are to be brought frozen to the December 1 meeting. The decorating of the hall for the holidays will be Friday,

48, Beyersville posts results of "42" tournament Lodge

Yes, we did have a lot of heavy rains, and it did keep some folks from coming to our Progressive 42 Tournament. We did have 44 players who braved the rough driving. Players came from Taylor, Thrall, Thorndale, Dime Box, Pflugerville, Round Rock, Ennis, and College Station.

We had our usual noon meal of turkey and dressing, gravy, cranberry sauce, baked ham, green beans, sweet potatoes, and sliced peaches prepared

by Carol's in Thorndale. Also helping with preparing the food and helping in the kitchen were Ruth Wuensche, Alice Wuensche, and Bonnie Wolf.

Thanks go to all who brought the kolaches, pies cakes, and other sweet treats that the players enjoyed throughout the day: Alice Schwenke,

Dorothy Markert, Richard Batla, Helen Raesz, Bonnie Wolf, and the Wuensches—Alice, Denisse, Linda, and Ruth Ann, and others we may have missed, are the wonderful folks who provided those enjoyable snacks.

The first place trophy went to Michael Horcica of College. Station with 13 wins. There were four players with 11 wins and the fist tie breaker, number of marks scored throughout the day, gave second place to Virgil Klaus who had 165 marks; third place to Frances Tallas with 151; and fourth to Florice Tydlachka with 146. Honorable mention goes to Elyne Lehman with 137 marks.

We especially want to thank the Supreme Lodge of the SPJST, Wright Distributing Company of Taylor, and Intercraft of Taylor for the wonderful donation of items to be used for door prizes.

Also a big thanks to Gladys Yates for all her help keeping the scores and helping keep things in an orderly fashion throughout the day. Gladys is always such a delight to work with.

And most of all, we want to thank all of you folks who came out to play in our progressive 42 tournament. We hope you enjoyed the day and will come back again next year.

87, Temple reports on November meeting Lodge

The meeting commenced with the Pledge of Allegiance, followed by a moment of silence in memory of our veterans and those members who have passed on.

The meeting started with a discussion of our 50-year members. Then, President Dan Kacir announced that the SPJST had achieved its statewide objective in the Vision 2002 Membership Drive of achieving 2100 member applicaitons. It has was also noted that Bertha Capps has beem doing an excellent job with the lodge bookings.

Treasurer Daryl Entrop reported on the finances of the lodge.

Old Business Sidney Kacir discussed the clearing of the brush around the lodge.

New Business The lodge agreed to sponsor a needy family this Christmas.

Youth Leader Pam Capps announced that the Lodge 87 Youth Club will be participating in the Temple Christmas Parade December 3.

Pam will also be taking pictures of the officers at the December 10 meeting.

Please note that at the December 10 meeting, we will be having our Christ mas dinner and will be exchanging gifts. There will also be a drawing for a wooden hand-crafted Christmas item and a hand-crafted afghan. Chances will be 50 cents each. Proceeds from the event will be donated to the SPJST Scholarship Fund. This project was put in the form of a motion by John Troy and seconded by Daryl Entrop.

No cooks are needed in December, but the officers will be serving. As our dinner is catered, we will have turkey and dressing, with all the trimmings. The caterer is Ben Chuck Wagon. They do good food.

All of "Rocky's" family including his daughter from Illinois were there. The food was excellent and guests enjoyed dancing to "music the way it used to be" by Manny Green's fabulous dance band. What a great party!

District Five October top producers in insurance were Marian Kadlecek of Lodge 88 for most applications and Inez Burton of Lodge 231, Angleton, for insurance written. Congratulations.

Youth Leader Barbara Linney-Gonzales reported that the youth again plan to attend and help at the Thanksgiving Day dinner at the Salvation Army. The Christmas party will be on Saturday, December 7 at 11 a.m. The choral group and orchestra will join the youth that day. They would like for all who can to come and support the youth.

Charles and Margaret Kadlecek are going on a cruise to Cozumel, Mexico, in November. They will be with a group of 30 friends.

Congratulations to Rudy and Celestine Darilek who celebrated their 60th anniversary. At our meeting, Carol Liebscher announced that Royal and Laura Warnasch had their 63rd anniversary. Best wishes to both of these couples.

Leland Hensley has been showing some improvement and is doing some walking. We miss you and Dorothy at the lodge, Leland.

Lodge 92, Fort Lodge 186, Caldwell Lodge 202, Worth Ladies Circle reports on Jourdanton invites Christmas party November meeting members to attend December 10 Lodge 186, Caldwell met for its Christmas party regular meeting on November 12, 2002 at 6:30 p.m. A catered meal of turkey and dressing, ham and all the trimmings were served.

President Luska called the business meeting to order. Regular business items were quickly completed. We then heard reports from. Michelle Mendez and Clint Luska.

Ms. Mendez reported that the youth club was still going strong. Their hayride in October had been rained out, but the children and enjoyed games at the hall. She also told us that they are planning a lock-in at the hall on December 6 after Christmas on the Square program in Caldwell.

Mr. Luska reported that the gate at the cemetery has been repaired. A big thank you goes out to Thomas Cannon for donating his time to fix the gate.

Mr. Luska also reported that the widening of Highway 21 will not affect any of the fenced area at the cemetery and that there are plans to apply for a historical marker for the cemetery.

Under new business, we accepted two new members. Officers for the year 2003 were elected and will be installed at the December meeting. We will also have a memorial service honoring our departed members.

Christmas party for all members of SPJST Lodge 92, Fort Worth Ladies Circle will be on Tuesday, December 10, 2002 at the lodge hall, starting at 10 a.m. There will be no business meeting as such, but officers for years 2003-2005 (two-year terms) will be announced.

Hostesses for the Christmas party will be Ima Lou LaPlant, Billye Starr, and Kathy Ormsbee, who will prepare the ham and turkey. Others should bring a covered dish or dessert.

We will have the Mr. Wright Gift Exchange again this year and are depending on Mr. Wright to be with us and ably lead us in this exchange.

er Norma Baker reminded us that the new prices for guest's lunches is now $4, and that chances for our door prizes are 50 cents a piece or three for $1. She also asked that people who buy flowers for our members who are in hospital should spend no more than $10, as that is what our by-laws dictate. Dolores Pollok said that almost everyone had paid his dues for the coming year with the exception of a few of our members who live out of town. She also read a note to the Circle from the Sokol gym director and staff thanking us for our donation to them in memory of Annie Regmund.

Annie's family also sent a thank you to us for making desserts for the luncheon following her funeral services last month.

- November's birthday girls were Evelyn Lovelace, Lily Hayek, Frances McDonald, Becky Elzner, Kitty Norell, and Jennifer Yandell as well as our guest, Jerry Sijansky. We sang "Happy Birthday" to all. Then pictures were taken of the celebrants.

Donna Havranek, who is on our telephone committee, said that she had visited Milly Elzner in the nursing home recently, and that she was not doing well. Jerry Elzner said that she was really having a bad day today.

Our prayers remain with her and her family during this trying time. Donna said that Marion Peterek was absent today because she was in Branson, Missouri.

We talked about what we should do for next month's meeting for our Christmas meal, and after some discussion, decided to accept Agnes Burge's generous offer of $100 toward a home cooked turkey dinner with all the trimmings rather than having it catered. Dorothy McCoy and Helen Kasparek each offered to bake a turkey and make dressing, and many others volunteered to make desserts and the rest of the meal. This should be a wonderful Christmas lunch, and I'm sure that Dorothy will pull out her decorator's wand and again create a beautiful setting for all of us to enjoy as we dine.

We had several members toss out ideas on where to direct our charitable giving for Christmas, and we decided that we would all bring canned goods and dry goods for the Metro Ministries as well as warm clothing and blankets that will be given out to the poor and homeless when the weather gets cool. That's a good time to clean out our closets and find things that we no longer wear or use and have them put to better use.

Jerry Elzner asked us to consider taking in some girls from the Czech Republic who will be coming here in March with the Jitro Girls Choir as part of the Cathedral Concert series.

They will be here for two to three days, and would need transportation back and forth to the Cathedral for the performance and any other sightseeing we could provide would, of course, be welcome. This is still a few months away, but not too early for us to start contemplating having a few young house guests from the old country.

Jerry also awarded Joe and Lera Nemecek their official Kentucky Colonel certificates in recognition of their generous donation of their time for worthy causes.

Wednesday, November 27, 2002—VESTNIK/11 Evelyn Lovelace said that her mom, Lil Hruska, is still feeling very weak, and is going to doctors frequently to try and find the cause. We sure do miss seeing her and wish her a speedy recovery.

Dallas Circle of Czech Women reports on November meeting Our meeting was called to order by President Bertha Podhrasky. Faye Wright led us in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance, and we remained standing for a moment of silence in memory of James Ondrusek, stepson of Carlyn Ondrusek; Albin Foit, cousin of Esther Cunningham, Fred Tear, brother in-law of Libbie Elsik; Ed Faraizl, Father of Raymond Faraizl.

Bertha welcomed 29 members and five men guests.

Faye Wright read the minutes, and they were approved as read Rosie Julius gave the treasury report, and it was approved as read.

Faye Wright read the correspondence that included a letter from Evelyn Trojacek to Esther Cunningham thanking her for the membership book.

Carlyn Ondrusek, membership chairwoman, was absent.

Sunshine Lady Georgia Brozek sent thinking of you cards to Bessie Kalich, Evelyn Salac, and Mary Sykora. She sent sympathy cards to Carlyn Ondrusek loss of her stepson, James; Libbie Elsik, loss of her brother inlaw, Fred Tear. The members signed a card for Raymond Faraizl, loss of his dad, Ed Faraizl; and a thinking of you card for Evelyn Trojacek who had eye surgery.

The birthdays were read by Faye Wright and "Happy Birthday" was sung to the celebrants.

Announcements Bertha gave a report of the ethnic day at the fair. It was a beautiful day.

The dances and costumes of the different nations were really pretty. Congratulations to queen of the day— Helen Oates; king for the day was Henry Gerlick; oldest married couple was Joyce and Joe Ehrenberger, and the youngest was Colette and Chase Ivey.

Bessie had six circles of the Beseda they were good and the costumes were beautiful. She had 10 children who did the Red Handkerchief Dance. They were so cute.

Bertha also thanked Helen Oates, Evelyn and Henry Cechan for their help in selling the cold drinks and kolaches.

The Texas culture partnership committee should be congratulated for a beautiful exhibition. Thanks to the Dallas Czech Concert Orchestra for its music.

The next Culture Society meeting is November 25, 2002 at Lodge 84.

Sister City no meeting scheduled.

Donations A donation to the Veterans Hospital gift shop in memory of Marie Toberney. We do not exchange gifts at Christmas. We are asked to put a donation in an envelope for the doctors of the Czech Republic who come to Southwestern Medical School to continue their studies, News of Members Bertha Malik went to Irvine, California for her granddaughter's wedding. Jenny Malik married Jim Mitchell. She said it was beautiful and she is so glad she got to see it.

Lydia Tyrock has a great granddaughter, Eaton Christine Franklin.

Vicki and Jerry Kohn celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary.

Esther Cunningham and Liddie Pavelka furnished a fruit basket for the door prize. Tickets were sold. The ticket that was drawn was mine, Evelyn Cechan. Thanks, Esther and Liddie.

Esther Cunningham handed out corrections of the membership booklet.

Esther read a poem on Thanksgiving and she had Wanda Petr and Kim Mikula gave their memories of Thanksgiving. Faye Wright gave hers and she and her family were going to grandma's and she fell out of the car, but she was not hurt and she was crying "Don't.leave me. I want to go to grandma's."

Hostesses for November were Lillie Jones and Martha Franka.

No meeting in January. Bertha will be gone to the Czech Republic in February.

Esther Cunningham will preside, and we will the by-laws and decide which ones need to be changed. We will amend them in March.

Worth Friendship Club reports on November meeting Fort

The members of the Friendship Club met on Wednesday, November 6, 2002 with 40 members present. President Alice Barnes called the meeting to order followed by a Thanksgiving prayer and all reciting the Pledge of Allegiance. Joe Kozel was thanked for providing the wonderful music before the meeting.

The minutes from the previous meeting were read by Secretary Libbie Vrla. Following correction of the name of Martha Studer's husband being John and not Jack, they were accepted as read. Treasurer Mary Ann Kozel gave the financial report which was accepted as presented.

Sunshine person Lydia Alholm read thank you note from Rose Nieswiadomy and further reported on the monetary donation from her for out Thanksgiving and Christmas luncheons. Thanks, Rose. We missed you in November and hope to see you at the Christmas meeting. Thank you note was also received from Agnes Reznicek expressing thanks for the friendship and sympathy on the death of her longtime friend, Alex. Thanks, Georgia, for this beautiful gesture.

Tracy Horn found a sale on jelly, called Alice, and the whole $50 was spent on jelly.

Lydia further reported Annie Whitsell is now home from the hospital following back surgery. Sympathy card was sent to Alice Barnes on the death of her sister. Get well cards were sent to Merel Kovar who suffered a fractured skull and bruised nose as a result of a fall and to Margie Kret who has been ill and in the hospital. It was learned that Merel is now at Trinity Terrace, 1600 Texas Street, Room 207A, Fort Worth, Texas, 76102, in the event anyone would like to drop her a note. Phone is (817) 338-2491, and she would love to hear from all her friends. Margie Kret is now living with her brother. Get well wishes go out to both of these sweet ladies.

Food Bank Donations November was designated month in which food items were brought for the St. Thomas Food Bank. Collected were 210 items plus $70. Alice went shopping again and bought 24 cans of corn, 15 packs of spaghetti and lots of bread, and said she still has a few dollars left over. Libbie reported Willie Mae Becan called that she would be unable to attend the meeting as she had a follow-up visit with her doctor following cataract surgery, and asked that she pick up a sack of items for the food bank. Thanks, Willie Mae. Hope to see you at the Christmas meeting.

Mary Ann read the names of our November birthday celebrants being Ella Greer, Tracy Horn, and Merel Kovar and remembered deceased members Alma Anderson, and Lena Norman. The singing of "Happy Birthday" went out to all these ladies.

Annie Whitsell was not able to be with us, but sent word that the next little gift exchange would be in February. We missed you, Annie, and

Harold, too. Hope to see you next time.

Rosie Steinman reported on our trip to Bossier City and thanked Martha Durham and the Ladies Circle from Lodge 92 for inviting us.

Mary Ann Kozel reported for the nominating committee and following elections, the following were elected to serve as officers for the new year: President—Alice Barnes; Vice President—Rose Steinman; Secretary— Irene Green; Treasurer—Linda Horner.

The Christmas menu was discussed with Alice volunteering to bake the ham which will be furnished by the Club. Everyone else is asked to bring same dish as for Thanksgiving. Five dollar gifts will be exchanged. Alice reminded Ima Lou LaPlant, Linda Lewis, Kathy OrmsbeL and Billye Starr that they are scheduled to be hostesses in December.

Door prizes were brought by Sharron Connelly, Maria Gill, Ima Lou LaPlant, Rose Ann Spann, Libbie Vrla, and two anonymous persons with winners being Ella Greer, Tracy Horn, Linda Horner, Lil Kosarek. Joe Kozel, Jeanie Mason, and Anna Marie Moncrief. Lydia brought a huge vase which was used for a prize on the last game.

Libbie passed around the souvenir book from Heritage Day at the State Fair of Texas which featured ads from SPJST Lodges 92 and 154, Fort Worth Sokol, and several well-wishers which everyone enjoyed seeing.

Thanks to Agnes Reznicek for all the plants and seeds she brought to sell with proceeds going to our Club.

Thanks go out to the Lodge 92 Ladies Circle for inviting us to join them on a bus trip to the Isle of Capri in Bossier City. Forty-one folks joined in on the trip, and we had an absolutely delightful time going over, there and coming home. We played bingo en route with Jodie Steinman and Martha Durham being the bingo callers. After a morning break, it was back on the bus and more bingo.

After arriving at the Isle of Capri, everyone headed to the game rooms.

Some of the group spent the full time playing, while some of us did take time out for a lovely buffet, and believe a few even went over to some of the other casinos. But, everyone was on time to start the trip back home. Apparently, we didn't have any big winners as there wasn't all that much bragging about any big winnings. On the trip home, it was more bingo, then singing led by Martha Durham and Rosie Steinman. After singing all the songs we could think of, we sang songs we learned in grade school. Yes, we even sang, "Mary Had a Little Lamb" arid "Old McDonald Had a Farm". After running out of these songs, Rosie led us in a few Czech songs, then we started in on Christmas songs. We sang them all, but it was fun. Thanks, Martha, you did a great job in organizing the trip and keeping us all entertained. We just hope you get up another trip soon and invite us again. Speaking for myself only, I was one of those losers at the. Isle of Capri, but did come out ahead 60 cents on bingo, but it was all fun.

Mrs Elzner was a member of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church and very involved in volunteer work in her community. She was a member of the American Legion, Women's Auxiliary 364, Polish of South Texas, Sokol of Corpus Christi, Corpus Christi Circle of Women, SPJST Lodge 79, KJT 72, and the Czech Heritage Society of South Texas. Mrs. Elzner loved polka music and traveling.

Mrs. Elzner is survived by her husband of 48 years, Jerry Elzner of Corpus Christi, Texas; children, Marsha Elzner of San Antonio, Texas, Larry J. Elzner of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, James Elzner of Corpus Christi, Texas, Timothy (Lori) Elzner of Texas City, Texas, Ricky Elzner of Lake Okeechobe, Florida; grandchildren, Jerry William Elzner of Corpus Christi, Texas, Dominic Gongora Elzner and Noah Gongora Elzner both of Texas City, Texas.

Visitation was held from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m., Wednesday, November 13, 2002 at Cage-Mills Funeral Directors with a rosary recited at 7 p.m. that same evening. A funeral mass was celebrated at 10 a.m., Thursday, November 14, 2002 at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church.

Shelia attended McLennan Community College majoring in childcare development. She was a member of St. Mary's Church of the Assumption, the KJZT Society 11, and SPJST Lodge 66.

Survivors include son, Cory T. Brown; daughter, Alyssa R. Brown; parents, Daniel and Evelyn Pratka; sister, Sharon Jackson and husband, Andrew; nephews, Joshua and Zachary Jackson, all of West; godparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, and other beloved family members.

Services for Frank G. Michulka were held on Monday, November 11, 2002 at 10 a.m. at Holy Cross Catholic with Reverend Don Ruppert celebrating the funeral mass and rite of committal. Interment was in Holy Cross Catholic Cemetery in East Bernard.

Frank was born to parents Josef and Frances (Sula) Michulka in East Bernard, March 3, 1919. He was raised in East Bernard and attended Holy Cross Catholic School in East Bernard. On May 13, 1946, Frank was joined in marriage to Vlasta Ovesny at Holy Cross Catholic Church in East Bernard. He served his country during World War II in the U.S. Army under General Patton. He received the Purple Heart, Good Conduct, and other medals. Frank worked most of his life as a farmer, loved gardening, and shared his bounty. He was a member of Holy Cross Catholic Church, American Legion, and member of SPJST Lodge 28 for 55 years.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Josef and Frances Michulka; son, Frankie Michulka; and 20 brothers and sisters.

He is survived by his wife, Vlasta Michulka of East Bernard, daughters, Dolores Jalowy and husband, William of Wallis, Lorraine Chumchal and husband, Wayne of East Bernard; sons, Daniel Micliulka and wife, Cheryl of Austin, Stanley Michulka and wife, Judith of East Bernard,

Michael Michulka of San Macos,; four grandchildren; and two greatgrandchildren.

Brother Ben was born July 29, 1922 in West the son of Julius and Bertha (Retchek) Pustejovsky. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and married Gladys Wallace on January 20, 1950. Ben worked for General Tire and Rubber Company for 25 years.

He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, American Legion, and SPJST Lodge 66.

Survivors include his wife of 52 years, Gladys Pustejovsky of Waco; sons, Steven B. Pustejovsky of Katy and Larry G. Pustejovksy of Waco; brother, Bob Pustejovsky of West; seven grandchildren; and five greatgrandchildren.

On January 11, 1927, she was married to Paul L. Broz of Moravia.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul L. Broz on November 27, 1971; parents; brothers, Frank, William and James Wenglar; and sisters, Celestie Marie Schwartz, Edith Schwartz, Lillian Schneider, Frances Barfield, Mary Ann Maresh, Hattie Herzik, and Cecil Herzik.

Survivors are daughter, Dorothy Nunn of Alamogordo, New Mexico; sons, A.L. Broz of Falls Church, Virginia, and Franklin Broz of Austin, Texas; sister, Elenora Koenig of Hallettsville; nine grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

Services were held Wednesday November 6, 2002 at 10:30 a.m. at Ascension of Our Lord Catholic Church in Moravia with Reverend Benton Thurmond officiating.

Burial followed in the Moravia Catholic Cemetery under the direction of Kubena Funeral Home in Hallettsville.

MARTHA BARBARA HANSLIK, age 84 years of age who passed away Thursday, October 26, 2002 in Houston. She was born May 2, 1918 in Moravia to Emil and Albina Peter Vrana. She was married to Alvin Hanslik of Breslau.

While Alvin was in the Army serving our country and overseas, Martha lived with her parents. After Alvin was honorably discharged from the Army, they moved to Houston. Alvin passed away in 1992.

She was also preceded in death by brothers, Emil Vrana, Jr. and Julius J. Vrana.

Survivors are children, David Hanslik and wife, Rae of Houston, Curtis Hanslik of Austin, Bruce Hanslik of Houston, Eli C. Hanslik of Austin and daughter, Patricia Hanslik of Houston; five grandchildren; brothers, William Vrana of Corpus Christi, Eddie Vrana of Yoakum; sisters, 011ie Pospisil of Praha and Millie Berger of Moravia; brothers inlaw Herman Hanslik of Hallettsville and Adolph Hanslik of Lubbock; and sister in-law Della Pohl of Hallettsville.

Services were held Friday, November 1, 2002 at 6:30 p.m. at Earthman Funeral Home in Houston.

She will.be missed by her family and her many friends.

News of Members Ima Lou LaPlant is the proud greatgrandmother to Devin O'Reilly Moore born on her birthday of October 7 which is also the birthday of the baby's mother, Christi Moore. Rosie Steinman is most proud of her daughter, Donna Parker. The Greater Dallas-Fort Worth Chapter of the Women's Transportation Seminar recently honored four Texas women at the Women's Museum at Fair park in Dallas. Two of the honorees were U.S. Representative Kay Granger and Donna Parker of Fort Worth. Donna is Vice President of Investor Development with the North Texas Commission and is Vice Chairman of the North Texas Tollway Authority Board of Directors. She was born November 17, 1911 in Hallettsville to Edwin and Annie Zapalac Gallia.

She taught school at Moravia for many years. Her first year as a teacher at Moravia was in 1932. My Husband and I were in her class. I even remember when she and her husband Adolph were married at the Ascension Church. The substitute teacher let all the students watch from the school windows as they came out of the church. Not only did she teach my husband and I, she also taught all three of our daughters. I am sure all her pupils will remember her warmly.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Adolph J. Heiman; parents; and brother, Edwin Gallia, Jr. Survivors include son, Lenert Heiman, Sr. of Shiner; sister, Sylvia Chudej of Schulenburg; brother, Alex Gallia of Dallas; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Services were held Friday, October 11, 2002 at 10 a.m. at Sts. Cyril and Methodius Catholic Church.

Burial followed in the Shiner Catholic Cemetery. Buffington Funeral Home of Shiner was in charge of arrangements.

Thanksgiving Luncheon Our November hostesses, Anna Marie Moncrief, Agnes Reznicek, Rose Ann Spann, and Sharron Connelly did a beautiful job in decorating all the tables with Thanksgiving decorations and plants on each table furnished by Rose Ann. Following the luncheon, Rose Ann asked that a drawing be held for the flowers which 12 ladies enjoyed receiving. Thanks go out to our master chefs Mary Ann Kozel and Kathy Ormsbee for baking the turkeys and preparing the dressing and gravy. It was all delicious. It was truly a beautiful luncheon with so many great dishes.

We really must have the best cooks in Fort Worth as members.

Following the meeting, Alice read a pumpkin poem, Mary Ann led us in grace, the luncheon was enjoyed and then games were played. A good time was certainly had by all.

The next meeting will be on December 4. Don't forget your gift for the exchange and luncheon dish.

The Texas Czech Heritage and Cultural Center, Inc., La Grange, Texas, will celebrate the holiday season with its second annual Czech Christmas Open House at the TCHCC Kalich House Visitor Center on Saturday, December 7, 2002 from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m.

Each room in the Kalich House Visitor Center has been festively decorated by groups of volunteers for the Christmas holiday season. Celebrate a Czech Christmas at the home of Texas Czechs.

Refreshments and music will fill the afternoon for this memorable occasion.

All three of my grandparents came to the SPJST banquet this year. I was so proud. I enjoy spending time with my Pawpaw, Rusty Hejl. I like helping him fix the tractor and doing things in the shop. I really like my Granny's (Gladys Hejl) cooking. During the summer, I make sure I'm there around 11 a.m. because that's when she's getting lunch ready. I like visiting with my Grandma Viola Skrabanek, because she always tells me stories about my dad and how things were when she was growing up.

186, Caldwell Youth Club switches plans due to rain Lodge

Dear Readers, On October 19, 2002 our youth club planned a hay ride. Unfortunately we were rained out. Nevertheless we had fall carnival set up at the hall.

We enjoyed games like ring toss, face painting, hair painting, bean bag toss, and the best game of all was having the chance to win live goldfish.

We had a meal that was prepared by some of our parents. We enjoyed hot dogs and cookies. Thanks to everyone for making this a fun event.

Create a tee-shirt design relating to the 2003 theme: "SPJST YOUth are the Future!" oir. Submit entry, using only a black pen or a black marker, on an official entry form (available from SPJST youth leaders or the State Youth Director) or draw your design on an 8 1/2" by if sheet of plain, white paper. Designs drawn with anything other than a black pen or black marker or designs that are colored will be disqualified.

Czechoslovak Foreign Institute offering Prague study program The Czechoslovak Foreign Institute announces the summer study program for 2003. Date of departure form the U.S. is June 30, 2003 and return date is July 25.

Group participants will be housed in the dorms of the Agricultural School at Suchdol with double occupancy rooms sharing a bath. Single rooms are available at an extra charge.

The dorm is situated in the northwestern part of Praha, linked to down town by bus and subway.

Three meals a day will be served featuring authentic Czech cuisine.

Here are some of the features of SPJST's Universal Life contract, which we call our "SPJST Flexible Protector Plan": Step 1: You elect an amount of insurance and select Death Benefit Option A or B (as described below). You can also select the amount of premium you want to pay and make the initial payment.

Step 3: At the beginning of each month, a charge for the life insurance protection is deducted from the cash value to pay the monthly life insurance protection costs.

Step 2: As each premium is received by SPJST, a small expense charge is deducted and the balance goes into your cash value account.

Coverage is Flexible. You have a choice of two death benefits, Option A or Option B: Option A: Level Death Benefit. The death benefit is made up of life insurance and the cash value. Initially, this benefit is equal to the face amount. However, current tax law states that there must always be a certain minimum proportion of life insurance in the certificate.
