Bridging the Gap It's been nearly three years now since the world approached the New Year with equal doses of dread and anticipation. That was in 1999 — the eve of the new millennium. A lot of people made it a point to stockpile household essentials — everything from bottled water and dehydrated foods to batteries and even gasoline in some cases.

At the time, there were some very real concerns that the world's computer networks would go haywire and that terrorist activity would be widespread. The computer glitches that did take place were relatively minor and domestic terrorist activity — well, that would come later . . .

Now here we are -- three years down the road. In the interim, we as a nation have experienced a plunging stock market, domestic terrorism and an ever-changing assortment of crimes and misdemeanors. On a personal level, many have lost love ones and experienced personal hardships.

So, what does that mean?

What it means is that we — as a Society of families and friends — have our work cut out for us. If we are to effectively take on the world, it remains essential that we first accept each other — like the preacher says — for better or worse. In doing so, our opportunities for growth are boundless.

Within the framework of any group — including families — communication gaps can and do exist.

Sometimes it's by accident.

Somebody doesn't get a message or maybe misinterprets something.

When that happens, if you take immediate steps to correct the mistake, everything's usually fine. The gaps that occur when information is withheld or miscommunicated are the ones that can really set you back. I don't know if you can ever eliminate that kind of thing; however, strong relationships built on honesty, consideration, patience, love and communication will weather any stoi iii.

A lot of pretty words? You better believe it! Politeness and courtesy are two of humankind's greatest inventions making it possible to live, work and play with one another in society.

Simply stated, politeness affirms the dignity of the people with whom we are trying to communicate.

Think about it. Generally stated, we're always pretty polite to strangers. We know that if we are not, the strangers will not be polite in return. And when strangers aren't polite, we feel offended. Now, if it's important to be polite to strangers, then surely it must be even more important to be polite to our families, friends and fellow members!

As previously stated, the world today provides us with ample proving grounds to demonstrate our fraternal spirit. It's to the advantage of our fraternal order — and to each of us — that we strive to make things right in our little corner of the world — and especially with each other.

Artist Josef Lada: "He loved Christmas"

I

f you have friends in the Czech Republic and they send you Christmas greetings regularly, you might have received an idyllic postcard depicting village children sled-riding, skating or building a snowman.

They are all dressed up in the style of the 1930s, the most fruitful period of Czech painter and writer Josef Lada.

Lada was born in Hrusice on December 17, 1887, as the youngest of four children in the local shoe maker's family.

As a youngster he left for Prague to get an apprenticeJosef Lada ship in book binding, which he received in 1905.

At that time, he met his future wife, Miss Hana Budejicka. They had two daughters — Alenka and Evicka.

In 1942, Lada wrote a wonderful book, which was in fact his autobiography, called The Chronicle of My Life. Unfortunately, Lada stopped writing the book in the year 1942, but it was followed by another book, written by his elder daughter, Alena, called My Dad Josef Lada. Lada died on December 14, 1957, just three days before his 70th birthday, and he is buried at the Olsany cemetery in Prague.

Lada could only see in one eye.

As a little baby, he reportedly fell down from the cradle and jabbed his eye on one of his father's knives.

Some critics connect this fact with Lada's special visual perspective, so

typical for his pictures. Despite this, he painted around 15,000 pictures and illustrated books by 130 authors.

The most famous of them is Jaroslav Hasek's 'Good Soldier Svejk', which has been translated into 47 languages. He also contributed to 81 magazines, six of them foreign ones.

And he also managed to devote much of his leisure time to his daughters, to whom he used to tell stories on which his later books are based, such as Mikes the Tomcat" or Ghosts and Water Sprites. He was extremely talented for learning languages - he spoke English, French, German and Hebrew. He is said to have learned Hebrew simply out of curiosity and that he longed to read the Old Testament in its original text.

Lada loved winter. That's why most of his pictures depict winter time, and fewer of them show spring and autumn and the smallest number depict summer. He also loved Christmas, although as he once told a magazine, as a child he never received expensive Christmas gifts.

He confessed that his family's Christmases had always been poor because they had little money to buy gifts. But he liked their small Christmas tree more than other children loved their larger trees that touched the ceiling. As a deeply religious man, Lada once said -that for him Christmas was a real holiday season thanks to its festive atmosphere, the ringing of the bell in the small church in Hrusice, and the sparkling children's eyes which reflected candle light during the Christmas Eve dinner.

Minutes of the October 16, 17 and 18, 2002 Regular Meeting of the Supreme Lodge SPJST Held at the Home Office, Temple, Texas The regular meeting of the Supreme Lodge SPJST was called to order by Chairman of the Board Bayer at 8:00 a.m. with the following Supreme Lodge members present: Howard B. Leshikar, President Gene McBride, Vice President Lanita Anglin, Secretary-Treasurer Jerry Mikulas, Financial Secretary Sidney Kacir, Legal Advisor Donnie Victorick - District I Frank Klinkovsky - District II

The Supreme Lodge members recited the Pledge of Allegiance and observed a moment of silence in memory of the deceased members.

MINUTES — The minutes were reviewed page by page. On page 22 under District III, second paragraph should reaki"Director Krizan reported on concerns for additional sales representatives at Lodge 5-Tioga " On page 25 under District I the words "authorized in" should read "proposed to" .Director Victorick moved, seconded by Director Klinkovsky, to approve the minutes as corrected. Motion passed unanimously.

OLD BUSINESS: LOCAL LODGES — President Leshikar reported on his and Vice President McBride's meeting with the members of Lodge 180-Burleson. The members of Lodge 180-Burleson have decided not to sell the lodge building. A letter will be written to the members of Lodge 180-Burleson explaining what has taken place and invite the members to attend the next meeting.

BY-LAW COMMITTEE — The Supreme Lodge members discussed the bylaw changes.

Recess was taken from 9:05 a.m. to 9:15 a.m.

By general consensus, it was agreed the proposals are the recommendations to the By-Law Committee, and the Supreme Lodge members will discuss the recommendations and the reasons for the recommendations with the By-Law Committee and the chairmen of the other permanent committees.

CHARITY'GOLF TOURNAMENT — President Leshikar reported seventeen adults and eleven youth participated in the golf tournament. It was decided to have another golf tournament in 2003 and to incorporate changes recommended by the golfers this year.

NFCA — There were reports by those attending the National Fraternal Congress (NFCA) concerning some of the issues that were discussed. There was a discussion concerning the messages some of the speakers brought and the networking done with officials from other fraternals. Vice President McBride reported the Fraternal Field Managers Association (FFMA) will pay for the honoring FIC's recognized by a society, if the society pays the sales representatives' other expenses for the trip.

Recess was taken from 10:15 a.m. to 10:25 a.m.

INACTIVE LODGES — There was a lengthy discussion as to what an active lodge should be and to develop a definition of an active lodge. President Leshikar moved, seconded by Director Victorick, that the requirements to meet the definition of an active lodge include: a. hold regular scheduled lodge meetings, b. have an active sales representative, or the state field representative is assigned to the lodge while the lodge is actively seeking a sales representative, c. recommend to sell at least six certificates per year, d. perform fraternal acts, e. submit required reports to the home office.

Item "a" is mandatory, and two of the remaining items are required, in order for a lodge to be considered an active lodge. Motion passed unanimously.

SCHOLARSHIPS — Seventy-four scholarships were awarded in 2002, and fifty of these have been requested by the students to be funded.

STATE FRATERNAL ACTIVITIES COORDINATOR — State Fraternal Activities Coordinator Gladys Yates was welcomed to the meeting. She reported on the lodges she had been visiting. There was a discussion on the FAC

4/VESTNIK—Wednesday, December 18, 2002 workshops that will be held in each district. It was suggested for part of the workshop to include information on how to conduct meetings.

VESTNIK — Financial Secretary Mikulas reported the subscriptions list for the Vestnik stands at 9,130. The weekly postage amounts to $2,100.00 and the cost of publishing is $1,100.00 weekly.

Recess was taken from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

YOUTH DEPARTMENT — State Youth Director Melanie Zavodny was welcomed to the meeting. She reported there have been 515 youth applications and nine new youth clubs formed to meet quotas of the Vision 2002.

There was a discussion concerning a state youth camp this year. Director Victorick moved, seconded by Director Ahlstrom, to allocate up to $7,000.00 for the state camp for the year 2003. Motion passed unanimously.

The results of the district youth counselors fall meeting and the youth committee meeting were reported to the Board. President Leshikar moved, seconded by Legal Advisor Kacir, for the check presented at the district meeting for the district youth fund to be presented to the DYC. Each district will maintain only one fund for the youth, and that fund will be controlled by the DYC and audited at each district's spring meeting. This will be effective at the spring 2003 meeting. Voting in favor were President Leshikar, Vice President McBride, Secretary-Treasurer Anglin, Financial Secretary Mikulas, Legal Advisor Kacir, Director Ahlstrom, Director Bayer, Director Broz, Director Klinkovsky, Director Pflughaupt, and Director Victorick. Voting against was Director Krizan.

Motion passed.

President Leshikar moved, seconded by Director Victorick, to approve all recommendations of the DYC meeting. Motion passed unanimously.

BUDGET — Financial Secretary Mikulas reviewed the budget for 2002 item by item. Income was 127% of the budgeted amount, while expenses were 81% of the budgeted amount.

PENDING LOANS — Legal Advisor Kacir reviewed the pending mortgage loans in each district.

LITIGATION/BANKRUPTCY/FORECLOSURE — Legal Advisor Kacir discussed threatened foreclosures, foreclosures by taxing authorities, foreclosures in process, and bankruptcies.

Recess was taken from 9:00 a.m. to 9:10 a.m.

EMPLOYEE — Legal Advisor Kacir reviewed the qualification need for the secretary for the legal advisor. Approximately half of her time is spent working on the society's mortgage loans. Legal Advisor Kacir recommended a salary for this position not to exceed $37,500.00 with no cost of living raise or other raise until 2004, and any bonus would be paid on a pro rata basis. President Leshikar moved, seconded by Director Victorick, to accept Legal Advisor Kacir's recommendation for the legal secretary. Voting in favor were President Leshikar, Vice President McBride, Secretary-Treasurer Anglin, Financial Secretary Mikulas, Director Ahlstrom, Director Bayer, Director Broz, Director Klinkovsky, Director Pflughaupt, and Director Victorick. Voting against was Director Krizan.

Abstaining was Legal Advisor Kacir. Motion passed.

Recess was taken from 1:50 p.m. to 2:00 p.m.

MUSEUM — President Leshikar reported there were 296 visitors to the museum during the past quarter. President Leshikar presented a letter from Roger Kolar concerning the proposed reading room in the museum. Director Pflughaupt moved, seconded by Financial Secretary Mikulas, to make a room in museum large enough to be used as a training room after the museum moves and to pay for half of the cost of this construction. Motion passed unanimously.

There was a short discussion concerning organizations that will be applying for grants and making requests for funds.

EDITOR — Director of Communication Vanicek was welcomed to the meeting. He reported on receiving seven bids for the SPJST calendar with the winning bid going to Jodi Vasek. There was a discussion concerning the amount of savings if the Vestnik was printed monthly, quarterly, or twice a month instead of weekly and the editor is to make a report to the board.

The discussion continued as to using more color in the Vestnik and to use a better quality paper for the Vestnik. There was also a discussion concerning doing feature articles about the success lodges are having.

The board went into executive session to discuss a personnel matter.

SALES — Vice President McBride reported there have been 1,832 applications written during the first nine months of 2002. This is an increase of 473 applications over the same period of 2001. There has been $45,793,954.00 in insurance written this year. Districts I, VI, and VII have met their quota.

NEW LODGES — Vice President McBride moved, seconded by President Leshikar, to extend the expiration date to January 31, 2003 for organizing the twenty-three lodges in •process. Motion passed unanimously.

SALES REPRESENTATIVES — Vice President McBride reported on the new sales representatives that are trained or pending training.

LONG TERM CARE — Vice President McBride reported on a long term care rider that would be piggy-backed on the term for life product. The long term care would be available for ages 18 to 75. President Leshikar moved, seconded

by Director Pflughaupt, to approve the development and the Texas Department of Insurance (TDI) approval of the Option Care "4" Life product. Motion passed unanimously.

GUARANTEED ISSUES — Vice President McBride reported 262 guaranteed issues have been issued for $1.2 million of insurance. There were 32,809 letters mailed to members.

TRAINING SEMINARS — Vice President McBride reported all state field representatives are certified instructors, and next year they will handle the CE classes. Training Specialist Jim Weist will develop the continuing education programs.

LODGE COMPLIANCE — Secretary-Treasurer Anglin reported the local lodge rosters had not been received from eleven lodges. IRS forms 990 and 990T have not been received from ten lodges.

INVESTMENTS — Secretary-Treasurer Anglin reported all the securities had -been moved to the custody account at Dean Witter. A discussion followed concerning the bond portfolio and the bonds that are in default. Director Pflughaupt moved, seconded by Director Krizan, to take the losses on bonds where the companies are no longer investment grade prior to the end of 2002.

Motion passed unanimously. Legal Advisor Kacir moved, seconded by Financial Secretary Mikulas, to sell any bonds or stocks prior to year end that might have a loss and the company was not investment grade. Motion passed unanimously.

DISTRICT I — Director Victorick reported on the lodges he had visited.

District I YAD had a record number of participants this year. He attended State YAD and thanked the Board for allowing him to participate in the NFCA. DISTRICT II — Director Klinkovsky attended State YAD, local lodge meetings at Lodge 47-Seaton, Lodge 187-Round Rock, Lodge 24-Cyclone, Lodge 20-Granger, and Lodge 15-Buckholts. He attended the continuing education class, District II officer's meeting, District II fall meeting, and sales meetings.

He reported District II YAD was larger than usual.

Director Krizan congratulated Lodge 180-Burleson on DISTRICT III resending previous action to sell their lodge building and continue operations through a hired manager and worker system. However, he further stated that, for them to continue to have long-term growth and success; the Supreme Lodge will need to contribute time and effort in helping them establish fraternal programs and benefits, along with new sales representatives and new members. Director Krizan also recommended adding language to Article 54 of the by-laws at the next convention to clear up any misconceptions about disposition of lodge assets.

Director Krizan again reported that Lodge 183-Arlington, Lodge 178-Longview, and Lodge 5-Tioga continue to request additional sales representatives.

Director Krizan then moved to bring the tabled motion from the last meeting concerning a donation to Temple College to the floor for action. Motion died for lack of a second.

Director Krizan expressed his thanks to the LAM Board and the Supreme Lodge museum staff for setting up the traveling mini-museum and to Dr. Donald Pesar, LAM Director, for being on hand to display and explain the exhibits at the Lodge 6-Cottonwood centennial celebration honoring their 100-year old building on September 8, 2002.

DISTRICT IV — Director Broz thanked Vice President McBride for attending the District IV fall meeting. Director Broz attended meetings at Lodge 215Tahoka, Lodge 160-San Angelo, Lodge 49-Rowena, Lodge 73-Seymour, and Lodge 76-Wichita Falls. He attended District IV YAD and the state YAD. DISTRICT V — Director Pflughaupt reported on attending meetings at Lodge 88-Houston, Lodge 142-Houston, Lodge 156-Baytown, Lodge 172-Pasadena, and Lodge 196-Houston-West. He also attended sales representative classes, continuing education, the Czech Cultural Center Gala, District V fall meeting, Lodge 88-Houston family dance, and Lodge 88-Houston men's club fund raiser.

He thought the information at the NFCA was beneficial to all who attended. He thanked all who helped with the booth and parade at the Heights area in Houston. He attended the District VI fall meeting and the District VI barbecue cook-off. He attended the District VI YAD and the state YAD. He thought NFCA was very informative.

LODGES — Vice President McBride expressed his concern about lodges not submitting applications on a consistent basis. There was a discussion about hiring full-time sales representatives in a pilot program.

DISTRICT VII — Director Bayer reported on the annual banquet held at Lodge 93-Hobson and the donation to the Karnes City Fire Department. He attended meetings at Lodge 202-Jourdanton and Lodge 107-Floresville, the continuing education class, District VII youth camp and insurance seminars. He also attended state YAD and the District VII fall planning meeting.

Chairman Bayer inquired as to whether or not all the employees are being cross trained. He inquired whether or not there was an easier way for the directors to audit the vouchers. He requested a report as to which plans of insurance are being sold and the amount of insurance being sold of each plan. He also requested the cost of the computers and software that has been purchased since 1999. This report is to be separated by department.

Director Pflughaupt moved, seconded by Director Ahlstrom, to allow the vice president to initiate a pilot program for one year, to be reviewed quarterly, for the contracting of full-time sales representatives with the approval of the applicable director of each district. Motion passed unanimously.

Vice President McBride presented the three year goals for the marketing department.

MORTGAGE LOANS — Secretary-Treasurer Anglin reported on eleven loans that are either over 90 days past due, in foreclosure, or in bankruptcy. SecretaryTreasurer Anglin moved, seconded by Financial Secretary Mikulas, to accept the recommendation for the past due mortgage loans. Motion passed unanimously.

Recess was taken from 1:45 p.m. to 1:55 p.m.

A discussion continued concerning whether or not it is possible and the cost of having the accounting program changed so expenses can be allocated to department. Financial Secretary Mikulas will make a report on this during the January Supreme Lodge meeting.

The District V director and president are to pick up the books from Lodge 114Fairchild and report back in the January meeting. All members of Lodge 114Fairchild have been transferred to another lodge per by-laws.

NEW BUSINESS: President Leshikar thanked Director Ahlstrom for bringing the trailer for the SPJST float to Temple.

Secretary-Treasurer Anglin moved, seconded by Vice President McBride, to accept the loss reserve of $18,000.00 on the mortgage loans. Motion passed unanimously.

REO NO. 195 — Secretary-Treasurer Anglin reported on the property that had been.foreclosed on in Ballinger, Runnels County. The property has been listed for sale. Secretary-Treasurer Anglin moved, seconded by Director Klinkovsky, to ratify the foreclosure. Motion passed unanimously.

INVESTMENTS — The investments for the quarter of July 1, 2002 through September 30, 2002 were discussed. Secretary-Treasurer Anglin moved, seconded by Director Victorick to ratify the investments. Motion passed unanimously.

TAXES — President Leshikar reported four lodges are not paying any ad valorem taxes, eight lodges are paying some taxes, and ten lodges are not tax exempt. More information will be provided during the January meeting.

President Leshikar reported on working with Scott & White Hospital on a fraternal benefit that would provide prescriptions at a discount to SPJST members.

NEW PRODUCTS — Vice President McBride presented information on an interest sensitive whole life product. Vice President McBride moved, seconded

by Director Victorick, to grant authority to proceed with development and getting TDI approval of the interest sensitive whole life product. Motion passed unanimously. Motion passed unanimously.

MEMBERSHIP CAMPAIGN — Vice President McBride reported the membership campaign for 2003 will be called "Outreach 2003 — Development and Growth — Cultivating Success." The winner for naming this program was Nancy Wilks, a sales representative from District VII. The state quota was increased 5% to 2,205 applications.

MORTGAGE LOANS — There was a lengthy discussion concerning recommendations by the officers about possible changes that could be made to the mortgage loans. The discussion concerned possible changes for primary residential rates, balloon notes, and interest resetting.

ANNUITIES — There was a discussion concerning the interest rate of the annuity products. A letter was read from Actuary Agee recommending interest rates beginning November 1, 2002 to be 5% for Annuity I, 5 1/4% for Annuity II, 6 3/4% for Universal Life, and 2% premium refund. There was a lengthy discussion concerning Actuary Agee's letter.

Recess was taken from 1:25 p.m. to 1:35 p.m.

Secretary-Treasurer Anglin moved, seconded by Legal Advisor Kacir, to set Annuity I rate at 5%, Annuity II 5 1/4%, Roth Annuity 5 1/4%, and Immediate Annuity 5 14%. Voting in favor were Secretary-Treasurer Anglin, Financial Secretary Mikulas, Legal Advisor Kacir, and Director Klinkovsky. Voting against were President Leshikar, Vice President McBride, Director Ahlstrom, Director Bayer, Director Broz, and Director Victorick, Director Pflughaupt, and Director Krizan. Motion failed.

The discussion for the membership campaign continued. The cost for Outreach 2003 would be approximately $150,000.00. Vice President McBride moved, seconded by President Leshikar, to adopt the Outreach 2003 program as the SPJST membership drive program for the year 2003. Motion passed unanimously.

Vice President McBride presented state field representative compensation from January 1, 2003 through December 31, 2003. After much discussion, it was agreed to add: (1) $500.00 to each applicable state field representative if they are instrumental in thirty new members being written in each active lodge during the year 2003, (2) $500.00 to SFAC if all criteria for an active lodge, as determined by the Supreme Lodge, are met by each inactive lodge, (3) the previous incentives for the state youth director be included in the proposal. Vice President McBride moved, seconded by Director Broz, to accept the state field representative compensation with the addition of the changes. Motion passed unanimously.

There was a discussion on the 2003 incentive program presented by Vice President McBride. Vice President McBride moved to accept the sales representative 2003 incentive program and the 2003 sales rules. Motion was seconded

UNIVERSAL LIFE — The interest rate for the Universal Life product was discussed. Actuary Agee's letter was reviewed concerning the Universal Life interest rate and his recommendation to lower the interest rate to 6 3/4%. The 7% rate is the highest rate being paid on any interest sensitive life product that he was aware of. Secretary-Treasurer Anglin moved, seconded by Vice President McBride, to set the rate of the Universal Life product at 6 3/4% through January 31, 2003. Voting in favor were President Leshikar, Vice President McBride, Director Ahlstrom, Director Bayer, Director Broz, and Director Victorick, Secretary-Treasurer Anglin, Financial Secretary Mikulas, Legal Advisor Kacir, Director Pflughaupt, and Director Klinkovsky. Voting against was Director Krizan. Motion passed.

COMMERCIAL LOANS — There was a discussion by Director Krizan about liberalizing the commercial loan program by changing the term or the amount of down payment. Director Victorick moved, seconded by Director Pflughaupt, to leave the mortgage loan structure as it currently is on both residential and coin-

FINANCIAL STATEMENT -- Financial Secretary Mikulas reviewed the financial statement of income and expenses for nine months ending September 30, 2002 and September 30, 2001. The total income has increased by 72% over the same period, and expenses have increased by 23% over the same period. The increase was attributed to annuity deposits, and there is a like amount of liability.

DISCOUNTS OF "B" CERTIFICATES — Financial Secretary Mikulas moved, seconded by Director Broz, to allow a 25% reduction of premiums in class "B" for those whose certificates have been in force 35 years or more and the insured has attained the age of 70 years, and an additional 25% reduction when the insured attains age 75. Motion passed unanimously.

ANNUITIES — Financial Secretary Mikulas reported Annuity I has $14,670,976.00 in 954 accounts, Annuity II has $49,172,542.00 in 1,831 accounts, and the Roth Annuity has $503,414.00 in 71 accounts.

MEMBERSHIP — Financial Secretary Mikulas reported SPJST has 51,044 certificates issued to 43,257 members.

EMPLOYEE HANDBOOK — The officers recommended changing the policy under Funerals, item 1 to read "Attendance of funeral of spouse or immediate family member . . . " and under a definition of immediate family add grandchildren. Vice President McBride moved, seconded by Secretary-Treasurer Anglin, to adopt the changes. Motion passed unanimously.

President Leshikar presented the officer's proposal to grant a $1,000.00 bonus and $500.00 gift card for the staff, $300.00 for the board, and $100.00 for honorary Supreme Lodge members. The officers felt the staff were doing an excellent job and should not be penalized. President Leshikar moved, seconded by Financial Secretary Mikulas, to accept the officer's recommendation. Voting in favor were President Leshikar, Vice President McBride, Director Ahlstrom, Director Bayer, Director Broz, and Director Victorick, Secretary-Treasurer Anglin, Financial Secretary Mikulas, Legal Advisor Kacir, Director Pflughaupt, and Director Klinkovsky. Voting against was Director Krizan. Motion passed.

DISTRICT I — Director Victorick expressed this was a good meeting, the need to pursue the by-law changes, and to keep a watch on the investments. He invited everyone to District I Fun Day. DISTRICT II — Director Kiinkovsky reported on a complaint from a sales representative about a commission charge back on a member that had died. The Board reaffirmed the rule that, if an annuitant over the age of 70 dies within two years of the annuity being issued, the commissions are charged back. He thought the Board made a lot of progress at this meeting.

DISTRICT III — Director Krizan invited everyone to attend the District III meeting and fun day at Lodge 66-Waco on October 27, 2002, and the annual turkey dinner fund raiser at Lodge 35-Elk on October 20, 2002.

Director Krizan mentioned that the society should consider development of an involvement program for the young adults ages 18 through 30 to keep them interested and involved after they leave the youth program. He further stated that he would like for the Supreme Lodge to reconsider the current severance package for officers regarding sick leave at the next meeting.

Director Krizan also asked for an update of the officer's accumulated sick leave record from the previous period to the end of this year.

In closing, Director Krizan mentioned that he enjoyed the meeting and that we should stay open-minded and be willing to try new things to stay competitive in our changing world.

DISTRICT IV — Director Broz requested the Board look at expenses and try to spend less. He invited everyone to Lodge 160-San Angelo annual meeting and District IV spring meeting.

DISTRICT V -- Director Pflughaupt thinks the workshops are very good and suggests in the future having information during the workshop about conducting meetings. He reported projects that keep SPJST in the public eye are good advertising and would like to see a state-wide project. He expressed his opinion that the meeting was very productive.

Lodge 139, Danbury youngsters receive recognition during the meeting.

DIST ' ICT VI — Director Ahlstrom thought the meeting was very productive and the society is finishing the year strong.

DISTRICT VII — Director Bayer expressed that the meeting was very good and productive. He invited everyone to the District VII fall meeting.

The dates for the Supreme Lodge meetings in 2003 are January 14, 15, and 16; April 8, 9, and 10; July 15, 16, and 17; and October 15, 16, and 17.

Christmas Issue Extra: Favorite Recipes of the Nebraska Czechs ©1968 by The Nebraska Czechs of Wilber Baking Powder Dumplings 1 egg 1/2 cup milk 2 tsp. baking powder 1/2 tsp. salt 1 cup flour Break egg into 1/2 cup measure and fill with milk. Add salt and baking powder to unsifted flour, sift into liquid and stir. Knead gently. Cut into size desired and shape into round balls. Steam over boiling water for 10 minutes. These dumplings may be made without eggs for those who are allergic to eggs. Use 1/2 cup milk only. Makes about 5 dumplings.

Poppy Seed Cake 1 cup poppy seed 1/3 cup honey 1 cup butter or margarine 1 1/2 cup sugar 4 eggs, separated 1 cup sour cream 1 teaspoon vanilla 2 1/2 cups flour 1 teaspoon baking soda, scant 1 teaspoon baking powder 1 teaspoon salt In small sauce pan cook poppy seed with honey and 1/4 cup water for 5-7 minutes. Cool. Cream shortening and sugar until light and fluffy. Add cooled poppy seed mixture, and egg yolks one at a time, beating well after each addition.

Blend in sour cream and vanilla. Sift

Pour batter into a lightly greased and floured 9-inch tube pan. Bake at 350 degrees for 1 hour and 15 minutes.

Cool in pan for 5 minutes. Remove from pan and cool on a wire rack.

Sauerkraut 1 quart sauerkraut 2 cups water 1 onion 1/4 cup chicken or duck fat 3 tablespoons flour 1/4 teaspoon caraway seed Drain the liquid from the kraut, add caraway seed and water. Cook for 20 minutes. Saute the onion in the fat until light brown, add the flour and cook five minutes or until slightly thickened. Remove from stove, add to sauerkraut and cook for five minutes.

Lodge Letters Section Lodge 6,v Cottonwood reports on December meeting Hi! With the absence of President Brother Johnnie Krizan and the First Vice President, Brother Ray Perez, being a bit under the weather after his double knee surgery, Brother Milton Peterson, Second Vice President, called our meeting to order on Sunday, December 1.

Courtney Halbert led everyone in the Pledge of Allegiance with Ashley Halbert giving the SPJST motto.

Sister Georgie Soukup, Guide, gave her report of 35 members present at our meeting with one guest. Welcome to H. T. Rea. We all look forward to seeing him often at our activities.

Sister Peggy Dobecka, Treasurer, gave her report and it was approved as given. Our Secretary, Sister Barbara Jean Hykel, read the minutes from our last meeting and they were accepted as read. There was also some correspondence given.

Brother George Straten, Financial Secretary, was not present at this meeting, so we will have that report another time. Sister Hattie Kaska, Sunshine Committee, was not present, and Brother Al Soukup gave her report of having sent a get well card to Brother Ray Perez upon his knee surgery.

Here I am trying to write this report and stay well myself and look after my husband after his knee surgery and so I am not promising what this report may be this time. Ray had to go back into hospital due to staph infection or whatever you call it and he then had to go back into surgery again. He will probably be doing fine by the time you read about all this. Anyway, I am trying to hang in there myself and get things done that I need to do here.

The youth report was given by Sister Peggy Dobecka. She reported taking cakes to the rest home on two occasions and that the youth were working on their crafts for the rest home and will be decorating the hall for Christmas. She also reported that

First, she wanted to give special recognition to some first place winners in the Christmas Ornament Contest. First place in their categories were Anna Dulock, Brooke Craig and Michael Ann Moore. The ornaments would be displayed on the Christmas Tree at the SPJST Home Office Open House on December 10 in Temple, Texas.

I am sorry, but I failed to get the awards down properly, so I will not attempt to list anything, other than the actual recipients. Congratulations to Traci Dobecka, Michael Ann Moore, Brooke Craig, Anna Dulock, Bracie Craig and Jesse Karlik.

The Charitable Contributions Committee approved contributions for the year 2002. Chairman Brother Bobbie Dobecka gave the following suggestions— West Volunteer Fire Department, West Ambulance, SPJST Scholarship, West Booster Club, West Sokol, and other Volunteer First Departments in surrounding areas of Elm Mott, Malone, Penelope, Abbott, Gholson and more.

Brother Bobbie also reported other charitable contributions from the SPJST, Inc. account. They were West Boy Scouts, Angel House, Family Abuse, West Senior Center, ARC of McLennan County, West Food Bank and West Toy Drive. He reported also to give to the Ronnie Pustejovsky Benefit Fund. Ronnie has been diagnosed with brain cancer and has been undergoing necessary treatments and surgeries. Ronnie was always a big help to us folks at Cottonwood by helping us out during our picnic and other functions.

Christmas Program The meeting was then adjourned for everyone to enjoy the afternoon with a Christmas meal being served, Santa's visiting, presents under the tree and youth programs. We enjoyed one of the programs right after adjourning our meeting since they had another function at which to perform.

Bobby also announced a new sales representative for the hall, and asked that if any knew of others who are interested and willing to go through the procedures, to contact him for further information.

We next held the election of Officers. I start my report with sad news.

My beloved wife, Mildred, passed away November 10, 2002. She was a great lady and will be missed. She was Lodge 79 treasurer for many years.

Our fund raiser for Czech Sokol netted $3,790. A big thanks to all organizations and individuals. This sum will be forwarded to American Sokol to be sent to Praha, Czech Republic.

Our annual Christmas party will be held December 15 with Sokol Corpus Christi as in years past. More info will follow. Also at this party, 22 Sokol members will be receiving longevity pins. Of this group, 15 are SPJST Lodge 79 members!

Czech Christmas (Continued from page 1.)

Advent The Christmas atmosphere starts to make itself felt in the beginning of Advent, roughly four weeks before Christmas. Not all of these customs which follow were observed everywhere, of course, and each of them had a number of regional variations.

Saint Andrew's Day The first Advent holiday falls on the November 30 and is known as Saint Andrew's Day. This day — dedicated to one of the twelve apostles — used to be a day for fortunetelling. One Saint Andrew example of this fortune telling was the practice where girls in Silesia would melt lead to read their futures.

They would melt it in spoons over a candle, and then quickly pour it into cold water through a key whose teeth formed the shape of a cross. From the form into which the lead hardened they would make predictions on what their next husband would look like: slim, fat, handsome, ugly, hunchbacked, etc. In the shape the lead took, the girls would also look for signs of the various crafts in order to predict the profession of their future bridegroom.

Elsewhere, girls would look for the appearance of their future husband in a hole cut in the ice, where shadows revealed his character to them.

In still other places, girls would tap on the door of the henhouse, and if a rooster crowed, the girl would be married in the next year If a hen answered, she would have another year to wait.

Saint Barbara's Day The next Advent holiday celebrated was December, 4 — Saint Barbara's Day. St. Barbara was a martyr from the ancient period of the persecution of Christians in the Roman Empire.

Barbara was the first of the "parading figSaint Barbara ures" of the season. The disguises people wore, in which they wandered around rural villages during the evening, really only resembled St. Barbara in name. They were made up of a woman's mask with a white cloak and long, flowing hair, with green wreaths on her head, whisks for swating children and baskets filled with fruit and nuts to give as presents.

In some regions, Barbara became Bruna, Perchta or Klibna, and in others, people accompanied her disguised

as goats, mares or devils. To this day, people cut off cherry twigs on St. Barbara's Day and put them in vases, where they bloom around Christmas Eve, signifying luck and hope in the search for a partner for life.

St. Nicholas's Day The most popular of the Advent holidays was' and still is — the day of Saint Nicholas (Mikulas), on December 6, though it is actually celeSaint Nicholas brated the evening before.

On the eve of this holiday, Saint Nicholas walks around a town accompanied by a Devil and an Angel. He visits children and gives them gifts, reminding them that the arrival of the Baby Jesus is at hand. But first, he asks them whether they have been good. If not, the children must promise that they will be better during the next year. The "Nicholas tradition" has its origin in the legend about St. Nicholas - a bishop having lived in the 4th century in Asia Minor who became famous thanks to his holy life and charity.

The tradition of St. Nicholas giving gifts is retained in all Slavonic countries and has become very popular.

The figure of St Nicholas, clothed in a long robe and holding a staff, has always been accompanied by a devil and an angel symbolizing the opposition of good and evil.

Saint Lucille's Day The final Advent holiday is December 13 — the day of Saint Lucille, after which begin the preparations for the Christmas holidays. Today, Saint Lucille's day has lost much of its meaning, but in the past it was very important.

Saint Lucille St. Lucille protected people against witchcraft and sorcery.

In some places, Lucille appeared as a mysterious, secretive being, with a white mask, embodying fear and horror. In other towns, Lucille evolved into a more pleasant form, roaming the village disguised as an old, hunchbacked woman with her face concealed by a mask carrying a wooden spoon, teasing the young people.

Holiday Customs From ancient times, the tradition has been to clean and decorate Czech houses before Christmas. Gifts are bought or made for family and friends and just as in America, Christmas and New Year cards are sent. Christmas cakes are baked and Christmas sweets are always popular.

It was once the custom to fast for the whole day on Christmas Eve, for only the person who didn't eat until

Christmas Eve dinner would be able to see the golden pig on the wall that evening. Apparently, if you saw the golden pig, you were in line to experience a run of good luck.

Christmas trees were decorated mostly with red apples, walnuts, gingerbread, and other sweets. On the tip of the tree, the star of Bethlehem was set. It was also customary for the tree to be mostly decorated by the children because the mother had too many other things to do. Candles were oftentimes fastened to the tree branches and lit in the evening, giving Christmas Eve an even greater sense of magic.

Dining tables were covered with white tablecloths and the legs were wreathed in garlands to prevent thieves stealing from the fields.

Under the table was put a bowl of grain and on it a bowl of garlic. Garlic was believed by all Sla y s from ancient times to have special powers of strengthening and protection.

At one time, it was as imporGarlic: tant a part of Strong Protection Christmas as the tree and sweets are today. Other holiday practices included the man of the house tying together shocks of grain, dipping them in holy water, and then sprinkling the whole house. Even the fire in the oven was sprinkled so it wouldn't be troublesome and burn down the house.

Christmas Eve Dinner According to tradition, no candles could be lit on Christmas Eve until the first star came out. As soon as it did, the family all sat down together to dinner. This dinner was always, plentiful in every household, for even the poorer ones tried to fill the Christmas table with a number of dishes.

Before dinner, the father recited the family prayer and then dinner was begun by the cutting up of a loaf of bread into many slices. Each was daubed with honey and passed out, starting with the oldest, to everyone present. If a slice or two was left, then that meant that someone would arrive in the family. If one was missing, then in the next year someone would die.

All the other courses followed. It was believed that the more courses there were, the more grain there would be in the field the following harvest.

The traditional Czech Christmas Eve menu had different forms in different regions. In some places, the bread was followed by soup, most often mushroom. A traditional Christmas Eve course everywhere was kuba, which was prepared from grouts, wild mushrooms and garlic.

Like garlic and honey, mushrooms also have a special position in Christmas. According to old myths, they are ascribed a heavenly origin.

Sometimes fish was eaten as well, but this was not very popular because fish was used as a fasting meal. Carp became a Christmas meal only in the 19th.century and continues to be a very popular holiday tradition.

Around December 20, tubs filled with the tasty fresh-water fish begin to appear in the streets of the towns. The

Christmas Carp fish is bred on a large scale in the Czech Republic for just this purpose.

Another part of the traditional Christmas Eve feast were peas prepared in the old Czech style — sweetly, sprinkled with sugar and gingerbread. At the end of the meal, desserts were passed around, combined with dried fruit -- typically apples, pears and plums — and nuts.

Traditional Christmas desserts included strudels and vanocka, a special Christmas bread. Want to try your hand at making vanocka? See the recipe on page 13.

After Dinner Activities After finishing dinner, no one got up from the table just yet. According to folk traditions, Christmas Eve used to be the most suitable day of the year for telling the future. At the end of the meal, the father would take a walnut and an apple from a bowl in the center of the table. If the nut was rotten when cracked open, it was an omen of sickness, or even death. But everything could still be saved by the apple; if a star was revealed when it was split in half, this foretold health and long life.

Not so fortunate was if the cross was discovered in the middle of the apple.

As soon as the man of the house had read his fortune, the process was repeated by all present, from oldest to youngest. After dinner was finished, everyone tried to stand up from the table at the same time, for it was believed that whoever stood up first would die within a year.

The leftovers were then taken by the father out to the livestock. The poultry received a different treat — peas or poppy seeds so they'd lay plenty of eggs. The rooster, gander and dog got garlic in their food, so they would be as sharp as they should be in the next year.

With dinner over came the time that children then and now looked forward to most: opening the presents left under the tree by Baby Jesus.

Fun With Nuts After this came time for another customary practice: A very common custom even to the present-day, the floating of little boats made of nutshells on water. A bowl of water was set on the table and everyone put in their half-shell boat, in which was fixed a burning candle. The fortune of each boat-owner was read from the fate of their craft. If the boat made it across the bowl, then a long life lay ahead for the boat's owner. If it sank, then something less pleasant lay in wait for the unlucky captain.

There was another custom connected with walnuts. After dinner, three nuts were cracked open and their insides removed. The first walnut shell was refilled with dirt, the second with a little piece of bread, and the third with money. The shells were then stuck back together and placed back

The vanocka —

a special bread made for Christmas --has a long history and is still popular today. The first reference to a vanocka was in the 16th century, and over the long years, it has gone through many small transformations.

In the past, it went under such names as huska or calta, and in some places in the Czech Republic today, it can be found under a wide variety of names: pletenice, pletanka, stedrovice, stedrovecernice, stricka, strucla, zemle, and ceplik.

At one time, a vanocka could only be made by a baker who was a guild craftsman.

In the 18th century, people began to bake them at home by themselves.

The first of the home-baked vanocka had to be given to the master of the house, so that the grain would prosper in the following year. At the end of Christmas Eve dinner, a large vanocka was sliced up. In some areas, a slice was given to the live stock, so they'd be healthy and safe from evil spirits.

Preparing a vanocka wasn't, and isn't, simple and therefore a variety of customs are followed in preparing the dough braiding and baking it to ensure success. The woman of the house had to mix the dough while wearing a white apron and kerchief, she shouldn't talk, and she was supposed to jump up and down while the dough was rising.

Another old custom was to bake in a coin. The person who found it in their slice was assured of health and wealth for all of the following year. A burnt or ripped vanocka was a bad omen.

Today, the vanocka is an indispensable and necessary part of the Christmas holidays, whether made at home or bought in a store. Even today, there are handy people capable of making the lower braid out of seven strands (it's most often made from four), or else they braid the whole vanocka together at once from six strands.

Now, you can try to bake one with the help of our recipe!

Ingredients 6 cups of medium flour 9 teaspoons of sugar 4 ounces of butter _ 1 tablespoon of yeast 1 cup of milk 1 yolk a pinch of salt vanilla sugar a lemon rind a nutmeg nut star anise 3 tablespoons of raisins 3 tablespoons of almonds an egg for the icing Crumble the yeast into the roomtemperature milk, add in 1 tablespoon of sugar, sprinkle evenly with flour, and then leave it in a warm place to rise. Put the rest of the flour, 8 tablespoons of sugar, the vanilla sugar, a pinch of salt,the lemon rind, the grated nut of nutmeg, one egg yolk, and the grated star anise into a bowl with the previous mixture when well-risen and mix well. After this, add in the softened butter and continue to mix well. When the dough no longer sticks to the side of the bowl, stir in the washed raisins and the cleaned, sliced almonds. Shape the dough in the bowl into a smooth loaf, dust it with flour, and leave it covered in a warm place to rise (with k larger amount of dough even all night.)

When the dough has risen completely, divide it on a pastryboard into 9 parts to make the vanocka.

The first layer is weaved from four strands, the second from three, and,, the third layer from two strands. Lay greased parchment paper on a bak ing sheet and gradually layer the strands of the vanocka on it. Leave it for a while on the sheet to finish rising, and then, before putting it in the oven, baste it with the whipped egg and sprinkle it with chopped almonds. Finally, puncture the vanockaat both ends and in the middle with skewers to prevent warping of the dough during baking. Our Christmas meeting and party was opened by President Dan Kacir.

The Pledge of Allegiance was recited, and a moment of silence was observed for departed members.

A short business session followed.

John Troy was elected Fraternalist of the Year. Correspondence was read.

Tickets were sold at 50 cents each for an afghan and a hand-crafted flower pot holder. The afghan was donated

by Georgia Navratil and the flower pot with a poinsetta plant were donated by Ed Reisener. Monies raised will go to SPJST scholarships and a needy family for Christmas.

The meeting adjourned for a delicious turkey, dressing, and ham feast donated by Don and Norma Alford.

Other side dishes were brought by the members. Presents were then distributed by Daryl Entrop.

We want to wish everyone a very merry Christmas and a good new year.

88, Houston Family Honored for Contribution to Lutheran High Gallery Lodge

utheran High North staff and students honored Mildred.

Holeman and her family at a dedication ceremony at 10 a.m., December 3, 2002. The Holemans were,recognized for their contribution toward construction of a new entrance and gallery area at the school.

"Mildred Holeman is a person who has a large heart for people and Lutheran education and she's demonstrated that in a variety of ways," said Don Christian, LHN headmaster. "She's been a lifelong friend of the school."

Holeman also made a major gift toward the half-million dollar cost of the building addition, Christian said.

The dedication ceremony will include the unveiling of a plaque, student group performances and tours of the school.

The gallery area also will showcase student artwork.

"Last year, we tried utilizing it to display art and it worked very well," said John Rodack, LHN art teacher who proposed the art gallery. He encourages his students to enter art contests and several students have been recognized with local, regional and national awards.

Talent on Display "The gallery is a way for us to keep everyone abreast of what were doing in the art world," he said.

"John does a good job of preparing kids for the next level. Students learn that this is what you need if you want to do art in the real world," Christian said.

The school also has made the gallery available to area elementary schools to display student artwork.

Through the gallery, elementary students have anther venue to display their art and their parents can

see LHN so it has been a good use of the space, Christian said.

When LHN approached Holeman, an area realtor with the fund raising request, "she said the school has done so much for me and my family, it would be an honor and a privilege to give back to the school," Christian said.

Holeman, a member of Our Savior Lutheran Church, has ben involved with LHN since before the school existed, She and her husband attended a barbecue held some 40 years ago to raise funds to buy the land and build a school.

A Lifelong Devotion "We were parents with young children, and we purchased a $25 bond, one of the first ones sold, hoping that our children would attend high school there," Holeman said. The Holemans grew up during the Great Depression and $25 seemed like a lot of money she said.

The school wasn't built in time for her children, but her granddaughter graduated from the school.

Her granddaughter's first three years at the school were difficult.

Her mother had cancer and the girl spent many days taking care of her mother.

"The support from the faculty was wonderful," Holeman said.

"The hardships she endured in her high school years would have been unbearable without the Christian faculty in this school.

"We were happy to make this contribution to Lutheran High North and it is to the glory of God we can, and it is to His glory that we are doing it.

"This community is being wellserved by this school, and future generations will enjoy the work being done here."

Lodge 202, Jourdanton held its Christmas party on Sunday, December 8, 2002 at 1:30 p.m. at Jourdanton Community Center with 38 members and 10 guests attending. Sales representatives present were Janice Favor, Jesse Huizar, Chester Gail Lee and Larry Wagner, Jr. President Jeff Barta presided.

Youth Club members led the Pledge of Allegiance. Larry Wagner voiced the table prayer. Secretary Bettie House announced the new members — Kimberly Schimelpfening, Michael Huizar, Marcus Huizar, Jacquelina Huizar, Ariel Reyes, Alexyss Reyes, Xzavier Reyes, Chris Schimelpfening, Liliana Wiederhold, Miranda Wiederhold, Annice Guenther and Eric Stephen Porter.

Fraternal Activities Coordinator Mary Ann Barta reminded the members to turn in their fraternal activity sheets at the next meeting.

Youth Club Leader Belenda Barta stated the Youth Club is planning a rummage sale in March.

Members present celebrating birthdays in December were Veronica Barta, Jesse Huizar, Cassandra Reyes and Shawnie Wagner. A get well card was signed for Tillie Koch.

A catered roast beef meal was enjoyed. Desserts were furnished by Mary Ann and Evan Barta, the Jeff Barta family, Edith and Walter Chesshir, Bettie and Lloyd House and the Larry Wagner family. Gussie and Ernest Spacek furnished the coffee.

Toys and non-perishable food were collected for ACCEPT. The Chinese gift exchange was the highlight of the day.

Wharton County CHS reports on December meeting The Wharton County Czech Heritage Society met Tuesday, December 3 at the Taiton Community Center at 7 p.m. Father Benton Thurmond opened the meeting with a prayer. President John Drozd introduced several guests. Members sang the Czech National Anthem, "Kde Domov Muj ?"—"Where Is My Home?" and said the Pledge of Allegiance. A moment of silence was held in respect of several deceased members.

The secretary's report was dispensed and Treasurer Rita Vanek read the treasurer's report. Dues can be paid now for the new year of 2003.

Hattie Drozd stated that the Wharton County Czech Heritage Society had a display at the Polka Expo at the Community Center in El Campo in November. Several mem-

bers helped with the display. She also said that our Wharton County Chapter decorated a beautiful memorial table at the Texas Czech Heritage State meeting on November 16 in Taylor. This was a celebration of the 20th anniversary of the Czech Heritage Society of Texas which was founded in 1982 with the purpose of preserving and promoting Czech heritage in the state.

Mary Baca from El Campo was presented the Blaha-Heil award by the Texas Czech Heritage Society meeting in Taylor. This is a high honor, and only one award is given in the state of Texas by the Czech Heritage Society.

Mrs. Baca's daughter, Mary Sexton from El Campo, accepted the award in memory of her mother.

Dan Marek stated that the Texas Czech Heritage and Cultural Center in La Grange has announced the start of sales of the amphitheater seats.

Dear Vestnik Readers, The November 4 meeting was called to order at 2 p.m. Tara Fuchs led members in the Pledge of Allegiance and the Youth Club Motto. We had 22 members and eight adults present.

Youth Club Leader Heidi Bartek talked about the Beanie Babies we were selling, the Six Flags trip, the memorial service, the Youth Club Christmas party

and the membership drive.

Members celebrating birthdays in November birthday were Kandice Stone, Dawn Capps, and Rena Greger.

The next meeting is December 1.

The meeting was adjourned at 3 p.m. Afterwards, we made Christmas decorations for Heartland Nursing Home. This is a nursing home we adopted.

December Meeting The December 1 meeting was called to order at 2 p.m. Amber Pechal led members in the Pledge of Allegiance and the Youth Club Motto.

Dear Vestnik Readers; The Lodge 80, Holland Youth Club met on Saturday, December 7, 2002.

We discussed upcoming events such as the Six Flags Trip on December 29.

We had a Christmas party and exchanged gifts. It was a lot of fun.

We worked on the December Vestnik project. I really liked the cute gift I received. After the meeting, we had a bake sale held at Lodge 80. It was great of the adult members to support us. See you soon!

Lodge 30, Taiton Offers Military Tribute Members of the Lodge 30, Taiton Youth Club presented their rendition of the Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy at the Fall Festival held at the Talton Community Center on October 6. Performers included Gerard Marcaurele, Jessica, Stephanie and Allison Fucik and Jessica Dornak.

Dear Readers, December is really moving fast, can you believe that Christmas is only two weeks away?

This past weekend, the Youth Club of Lodge 84 helped decorate the lodge for Christmas. I had a lot of fun untanlging the garland, that was used to trim the wreaths. Afterwards we went to the movies and see "Santa Claus II." It was a cute movie.

We are busy practicing for the lodge Christmas program this Sunday, December 15. The doors open at 3 p.m. for a social hour, followed by dinner and a program. I hear Santa will

also be making an appearance.

84, Dallas Junior Youth Club anticipating Santa's arrival at lodge hall Lodge

Dear Readers, I am so excited about the Christmas party at Lodge 84 this Sunday. I hear that Santa is going to come by and see us all. I am practicing really hard for the program so he will be proud of me.

Last Saturday, December 7, the youth club met at the lodge to decorate it for Christmas. We had a lot of fun helping decorate the tree and hanging garland. It was hard to untangle the garland, but we made it.

Afterwards, we went to see "Santa Claus II" at the theatre. It was good, and mommy let us buy popcorn and a drink.

Also, have you heard about the district lookout party on Friday, January 3, 2003? More details will be available soon. I hope to you see you all there.

Please note that the Decemeber youth club meeting has been rescheduled for December 19. A big thanks to Trish for calling all the youth members and rescheduling our meeting due to the majority of the youth being involved in the other holiday activities scheduled for that night.

We will have a short meeting at the food court of the Colonial Mall in Temple. Be there at 6 p.m. We will exchange our Christmas gifts at the meeting. The Wharton County Czech Heritage slate of officers were presented by the Nominating Committee members Richard Chomout, Delfin Marek, Mary Ann Kainer, and Edith Molberg, Chairperson: President— Jeraldine Socha; First Vice President—Virginia Balusek; Second Vice President David Bucek; Third Vice President—Frank Milder; Secretary—Mary Ann Kainer; Treasurer—Rita Vanek; Historian— Shirley Schnieder; Reporter—Ethel Meek; and Directors are Gladys Rod, Richard Chomout, and John Drozd.

Charlene Cummings, the outreach coordinator for Wharton County Crisis Center, presented the program and gave information on the Crisis Center which provides shelter and support to victims of family violence in Wharton and Matagorda Counties since 1983.

The Crisis Center is supported by grants, organizations, and monetary donations. Wharton County has purchased a new facility for offices and a re-sale shop. The shelter is located on 1017 N. Alabama in Wharton. Ms. Cummings stated that many items are needed such as clothing, household items, furniture, reprogrammed cell phones, etc. Counselors and computer classes are available and also help with rental assistance. Last year, over 1,300 victims were helped with ser-

Members of the Czech Heritage Society did not exchange gifts, but brought gifts to be given to the Crisis Center. Father Benton Thurmond gave the closing prayer. A meal was served and members brought a delicious variety of desserts, salads, and meats.

The next meeting will be on March 4, 2003 at the First Christian Church Fellowship Hall in El Campo.

Moravian Christmas Cookies Ingredients: 8 oz. dark molasses 1/2 cup brown sugar 1/2 cup margarine 1 1/2 tsp cinnamon 1 1/2 tsp cloves 1 tsp ginger 1 tsp allspice 1/2 tbsp nutmeg 1 tbsp baking soda 4 cups flour Mix flour, sugar, butter, and spices together. Heat molasses until lukewarm and add baking soda to it. Add molasses to rest of ingredients and mix well. If necessary, add a little water to the dough to get it to a soft enough consistency to roll it. Roll the dough on a well floured surface, making it as thin as humanly possible.
