Thanks to the KBI Group for some very valuable information: A solid base for success is perseverance. Dismissed from a major newspaper with the advice to try something else because he had no talent, a young man considered giving up—but he didn’t.

His name—Walt Disney. Another young man who loved flying, crash-landed the first two times he soloed and, the third time, he flew head-on into another aircraft. Give up? Not Admiral Richard Byrd! Author Rod Serling of Twilight Zone fame, wrote and tried to market 40 stories before he sold one. Yes, a solid base for success is perseverance.

The great triumphs of our life experiences will be the rewards of persistence.

Never depend on your genius to carry you. If you have talent, improve it. If you have none, develop it, but do not depend on it. Our rewards are the results of persistence.

SPJST Sales Representatives, take note: Perseverance, not genius, separates winners from the losers in selling.

Sixty percent or more of your time is spent in a negative environment. Three of every five prospects you call on will likely deflate your ego. It’s perseverance that serves you in such a climate. Never give up!

Vestnik Mailing The Vestnik is now being mailed out of the Temple Post Office. The first issue mailed from Temple was dated January 5, 2005. The Vestnik is printed during the weekend and mailed on Monday from Temple. If you are having problems receiving your Vestnik on time, please contact your local post office and let them know.

Valentine Greetings Remember to send in your valentine greeting for the special someone in your life. The greetings will be printed in the February 9 Vestnik. The deadline for submitting valentines is February 2. See page 3 for complete information and where to send your valentine.

SPJST Awards Banquet Lodges will receive their information packets about the SPJST Awards Banquet by the end of January. The banquet will be held at the Killeen Civic and Conference Center on Saturday, February 26. The facility is a nice, spacious place. And, Killeen is a great city.

I hope that you will make plans to attend this year’s banquet. If you plan to stay the night in Killeen, please mention “SPJST” when you are booking your hotel room. A complete list of hotels appeared in last week’s Vestnik. Watch for more information on the banquet soon in the Vestnik.

Through the end of December, the SPJST received 3,920 applications for insurance and annuity certificates. The membership application goal of 2,345 in the Join Hands 2004 membership drive was reached in July. However, the membership campaign continues through the end of the year.

In conjunction with SPJST’s Join Hands 2004 program, local lodges have been assigned application quotas for the year. The lodge quota has been based

Mardi Gras Beach Run January 29, 2005 Stewart Beach in Galveston, Texas ~ An official event of Mardi Gras Galveston 2005! ~ SPJST members, get on your mark, get set and go to Galveston on January 29! Race-day will feature the 10K run, 5K run and walk, and kid’s 1K run, and children’s activities complete with arts and crafts, games, and face painting. The post-race party begins at 8:45 a.m. with the awards ceremony beginning at approximately 10 a.m. on the beach side of Brodie’s Beach Hut. Live music will be provided, door prizes will be thrown out to the crowd, place finishers will be recognized, and refreshments will be served.

Proceeds will benefit the Galveston County YMCA and University of Texas Physical Therapy Class.

Hi! Let me first say thanks to the Supreme Lodge for the 2005 calendar that I received. It is very nice and colorful this year.

President Johnnie Krizan called our meeting to order at 2 p.m. on Sunday, January 2, 2005. Thanks to Amelia Peterson for leading everyone in the Pledge of Allegiance. Thanks to Courtney Halbert for reciting the SPJST Motto.

Flag Bearer/Guide Georgie Soukup gave her report of 33 members and two guests present. Thanks to our guests, Supreme Lodge President Brian Vanicek, along with his wife, Joan and their children, Stephanie and Sam. It is always a pleasure to have you folks with us. Brian was honoring us with his presence to install the lodge officers for 2005, but mainly because he knew Sister Barbara Hykel was making her stew for our meal that day. Brian says it is just like

the stew his grandmother used to make.

Before installing the officers, Brother Brian read us a passage out of a book back in 1934, when Lodge 6 was about 37 years old. It was about SPJST and its purpose in the neighborhoods. Our lodge is 108 years old this year. Secretary, Sister Barbara Hykel, for the reading of the minutes from our last meeting. The minutes were approved as read. Sister Barbara also had some correspondence from the Czech Education Foundation of Texas and a letter from the SPJST Home Office.

February Socials, Meeting Treasurer, Sister Peggy Dobecka, gave her report. It was approved as given. Financial Secretary, Brother George Straten, had no correspondence at this time from the Home Office, so he had no new members to report. Brother George did report that socials for February will be on February 4 and February 18 at 6:30 p.m. Our next meeting will be February 6, at 2 p.m.

Youth Leader, Sister Peggy Dobecka, gave her report of taking cakes to the rest homes on December 1 and again on January 8. She reported that on December 5, the youth did a short Christmas program. She thanked all who donated to the youth club door prizes. They used part of the money received for the troops in

VĚSTNÍK Iraq in January. The youth will bake valentine cookies for the rest homes on February 4. Their next meeting will be February 6 at 1:30 p.m.

Brother Johnnie called upon our FAC, Sister Barbara Hykel, for a report. She reported that the Supreme Lodge had sent new by-law books if anyone needs one. She mentioned that the SPJST will be having its first bowling tournament with proceeds to benefit the Susan B. Komen Cancer Foundation. Sister Barbara thanked all her family for helping her prepare the meal for this meeting.

Sunshine Committee, Sister Jerelene Lenart, gave a report of sending get well cards to Brothers Robert Seith, Johnnie Krizan, and Ray Perez. She also sent a sympathy card to Otto and Pauline Hanak.

Brother Jerry Kucera, sales representative for our lodge, spoke a brief moment. He advised us of his retirement after his back surgery, and he said that he enjoyed the 10 years doing his job as District Three State Field Representative. Brother Jerry went on to say that his wife, Dorothy, has kept him busier in December,

than when he worked. Brother Brian Vanicek also spoke a few nice words regarding his working with Jerry for many years. Jerry, you will be definitely missed in District Three as State Field Representative. Good luck! Enjoy your retirement!

Brother Brian Vanicek reported that congratulations were in order for George Soukup as fraternalist of the year for Lodge 6, Cottonwood. The incentive awards banquet will be held at the Killeen Convention Center this year on February 26. It was also brought to our attention that the Supreme Lodge is working on a field day at the San Antonio State Fair, which is tentatively set for June 12.

Brother Krizan, President, thanked First Vice President, Brother Ray Perez, for hosting our last meeting in December due to Brother Johnnie’s absence. He also brought up about the State 42 domino tournament that will be on Saturday, April 2 at our lodge. In the absence of Brother Bobbie Dobecka, Sister Peggy gave a report on the contributions committee for the year 2004, which was approved with a couple of minor corrections.

Brother Milton Peterson, Board of Trustees, called a trustee’s meeting for Friday night, January 7 at 7:30 p.m. Discussions need to be done for renovations of our lodge before the spring socials that are coming up. It has been discussed that Saturdays in January are the work days for this renovation work.

Both vice presidents, Brothers Ray Perez and Milton Peterson, handled our door prize drawings. The $5 attendance door prize was won by Brother Ernest Bezdek. The progressive door prize was won by Russell W. Schier, not present. Other door prizes brought by Brian Vanicek from the Home Office were as follows: Evelyn Bezdek—first aid kit; Alvin Pavlas—blanket; Mary Pavlas— apron and mitt; Barbara Hykel—thermometer; and Kim Seith—Loving Scent-Sations trivet.

Those in attendance with birthdays for the month were Brothers Ray Perez, Brian Vanicek, Gene Horak, and Al Soukup and Sisters Barbara Hykel and Lydia Dobecka. Happy birthday to all of you and to all with a birthday this month.

Lodge 9, Snook adopts portion of County Road SPJST Lodge 9, Snook met in regular session on January 5, 2005.

Donnie Hejl called the meeting to order at 7:30 p.m. Hannah and Hayden Kovar led the group in the Pledge of Allegiance.

Ann Schoeneman read the minutes of the December meeting, and they were approved with two corrections.

Bill Orsak was to check with Papa Johnny’s Sign Company, and Marie Shelfer’s name was left off of the list for people to sell tickets for the fund raiser.

David Kovar then gave the hall manager’s report.

VĚSTNÍK Correspondence The balance on the loan with SPJST is $4,404.65 as of December, 2004. Donnie Victorick gave the treasurer’s report. Marie Shelfer presented the youth club report. There were 38 youth club members present and eight adults. The service project for February will be to bring $5 per family for the South Asian Relief Fund for the Tsunami Disaster. The youth club will renew their $30 partnership with Twin City Mission 2005 partner. The youth club voted to approve the County Road Adoption commitment for two years. The Camp Tee-Shirt Design Contest theme is “SPJST—Soaring to New Heights.” The contest ends January 31.

Bill Orsak gave the State Field Representative report for Lodge 9.

The lodge voted to accept seven new members and also voted to buy 52 new folding chairs.

We also voted to donate $150 to the Snook Little Dribblers Association and $250 to the Little League Baseball or the Softball Association.

Lodge 9 will volunteer to participate with the youth club to adopt a portion of County Road 269 from the bridge to County Road 270, turn right and go to Highway 60.

Our Challenge 2005 quota for Lodge 9 will be 30 new members and 10 youth club members.

The next meeting will be February 2 at 7:30 p.m. The youth club will meet at 6:30 p.m. Tell your neighbors and friends to come join the fun and fellowship.

Lodge 29, Taylor reports on January meeting Lodge 29, Taylor held its first meeting for the year 2005 on January 9. President Ronnie Rieger called the meeting to order. He then led the Pledge of Allegiance.

Mr. Zach Kramer, District Two State Field Representative, was visiting our meeting and swore in the lodge officers for 2005. Officer roll call showed Carol Green and Edmond Tate absent.

The minutes from the December meeting were read and approved.

Tammy Whatley gave the treasurer’s report.

Jesse Pospisil gave the property committee report. He talked about the success of the two New Year’s Eve dances we had (upstairs and downstairs), and he thanked those who helped. On February 6, we will have our annual Superbowl party at the hall and will be serving stew.

Jesse asked for volunteers to help with preparing the meal and bringing desserts for the State Tarok Tournament on February 5.

Donna Pasemann read a list of 50year members for Lodge 29. They are Alvin Berryhill, Marie E. Crabb, Robert J. Crabb, Henry H. Holubec, Ricky Kaiser, Michael D. Kerlin, James F. Kincl, Peggy S. Leshikar, Nina Maureen Marek, Charlotte G. Mashburn, Lloyd A. Nauert, and Darline K. Strickland.

Tammy Whatley reported on the Publications Committee meeting that she attended on Saturday. She talked about Orel, the new SPJST mascot.

She also stated the committee worked on guidelines for entries into the Vestnik to be presented to the Supreme Lodge.

Zach Kramer talked about the new Vestnik, which is now in color. He also talked about new applications and earned premiums in District Two. The new incentive goals for Lodge 29 are 50 members and 10 youth members. Zach brought enough door prizes for everyone.

Jerry Wayne Tallas reported on the Jimmy Heap Reunion/Dance to be held on March 12 at the Taylor SPJST Lodge 29. There will be a slide show presentation detailing the history of Jimmy Heap. Everyone is invited to attend.

The next meeting will be held on February 13 at 4 p.m.

Lodge 40 El Campo-Hillje selects 2005 committees SPJST Lodge 40, El Campo-Hillje met Sunday, January 9, 2005, at the lodge hall in Hillje. Special guests were District Six Director Mike Ahlstrom and wife, Kathy.

The meeting was called to order by President Ardis Bacak. The Pledge of Allegiance was recited by all, and a moment of silent prayer was observed for all the departed lodge members.

Secretary Debbie Sczech noted all officers and trustees were present with the exception of Lorraine Kana not being present. Secretary Sczech read the minutes of the last meeting followed by all the communications.

The treasurer’s report was given

by Sheldon Holub.

FAC Dee Floyd gave her monthly report and presented a new 2005 list of workers for kitchen monthly meeting Youth Leader Jennifer Kunetka reported to the lodge members about their monthly meeting and upcoming events.

Bingo Committee - Sheldon Holub reported that we had a wonderful bingo year for the year of 2004. Also, he thanked all the workers.

Reports were noted for hall rentals/bookings: January 21, 22, and January 28, 29, 2005.

The snack bar and mowing committee reports were given.

The resolution committee reported

the death of member Victor Wiesner.

The cemetery committee meeting will be January 30 in Moravia. They will need donations.

Three new members were welcomed to the lodge. Insurance sales reports were given.

There was no old business.

New business included discussion about lodge officers, trustees, youth leader, and assistant youth leader.

VĚSTNÍK Youth Leader Juanette Susan reported that the youth club purchased a public address system for the hall and donated that to the mother lodge. They used it last month during their program, and it worked really well. The youth club is going to the movies this month for its meeting and social.

Bonnie reported that the bunco night is still going strong, and new people are attending every month. In December, they exchanged potholders and recipes. Don’t forget, folks, that you can play, too. It is a very easy game to learn, and you get to meet new people.

The Property Committee, which had met before our meeting, reported on the projects that they are overseeing. The hall will be getting a paint job on Monday by Robert and Bobby.

The wooden floors are part of the next phase. They will be sanded, oiled, and waxed. We want to keep those floors slick for the polka dances! If anyone in the community or SPJST family loves to work floors, give Bobby a call. They will not turn down any help. The interior wooden doors are also being stained this week. The grounds are not being left out as several loads of gravel are being applied, and John W. has graciously volunteered his tractor to even out the gravel.

Garage Sale—March 12 The membership decided to try a garage sale as a fund raiser to raise additional funds to pay off the air conditioning/central heating units.

Wednesday, January 19, 2005 This will be held on Saturday, March 12 between 8 a.m. until ?. We will gladly accept any donations of clothing, working electronics, workable farm equipment, any household goods that will sell, sell, and sell!

Lodge 79 Corpus Christi elects officers The Christmas dinner on December 19, 2004, was enjoyed by those who came. Brother Jerry and Sister Jill Sijansky were the main cooks for the delicious pork roast with dumplings plus a variety of other dishes brought by members.

President Jerry Sijansky called the annual meeting to order with all the officers present. We have on the sick list at this time—Sister Ruth Marek and Sister Margaret Majek. We hope they are better by now.

He weighed 7 pounds, 4 ounces, and was 20 inches long.

Grandparents are Rita Vanek and the late Frankie Vanek of El Campo, Texas, and Leonard and Helen Eisele of Webberville, Michigan. The baby’s mother is the former Amanda Vanek.

Lodge 154, Fort Worth Halloween Fun October 31, 2004 • Sokol Hall in Fort Worth Participants in the ages 0 to 2 years group display their Halloween costumes.

Lodge 154, Fort Worth hosted a Halloween party at the Sokol gym.

Youth in the ages 3 to 4 years group dressed as a pirate, Dorothy from the Wizard of Oz, a cowgirl, a witch, and a princess.

The secretary then read correspondence from Joe and Shirley Liles, RVOS representative, in the form of Christmas greetings. Also a thank you from Holland Head Start was received.

The membership approved four new applicants in a motion by Rita Janke.

The president thanked everyone for their part in making the Christmas party a success. He then stated the by-laws and auditing committees will meet at 6 p.m. on January 12 at the hall. Frankie said the lodge was looking into putting in air vents to help eliminate some of the cigarette smoke that has become so bad during bingo. Harold Spinn is looking into the matter.

The membership approved this in a motion by Coleman Benner, seconded by Rita

Taisler, Virginia Benner, and Glen Latham.

The cake walk was a huge success with the grand prize cake being a pumpkin patch created by Melissa Dunlap.

Lodge 180 Burleson hosts valentine dance Our regular meeting was held on January 4, 2005. The Pledge of Allegiance was recited, and a moment of silence was observed for departed members and loved ones.

President Bill Slavik welcomed District Three Director Johnnie Krizan to our meeting.

Secretary Ann Sammet read the minutes of the last meeting.

All officers made good reports.

Thanks to Joe Hurtik and Bill Slavik for making needed repairs in the bathroom.

Everyone enjoyed the Christmas party on December 5, 2004. After a brief meeting, our officers were installed by District Three Director Johnnie Krizan.

Our social ended with a meal of chicken and brisket, sauerkraut, mashed potatoes, and a variety of vegetable dishes. Desserts of pies and cakes topped it off.

Although the New Year’s Eve dance was small, everyone had a great time dancing to the music of David Lovorn. Black-eyed peas and corn bread were served to bring in the new year.

Valentine Dance—February 12 We will have a valentine dance on February 12. There will be a charge of $15 at the door for a couple and $8 per person. David Lovorn Band will furnish the music.

Soaring to New Heights Lodge 202 Jourdanton announces hat contest Lodge 202, Jourdanton met Sunday, January 9, 2005, at 1 p.m. at the Jourdanton Community Center with 37 members and one guest present. Sales Representatives present were Joan Wiederhold, Chester Gail Lee, Joe Huizar, Jesse Huizar, and Brenda Gonzales.

President Jeff Barta presided and led the Pledge of Allegiance.

Secretary Bettie House read the minutes. Correspondence included acknowledgements from ACCEPT for the monetary and food donations, and the Leona Pivonka family for the contribution to the SPJST Scholarship Fund in her memory.

Also, the SPJST Home Office sent acknowledgements for the donations to the scholarship fund. Treasurer Melba Novosad presented the financial report.

The lodge has nine new members.

The lodge voted to donate $100 to the Atascosa County Junior Livestock Show to help purchase an animal.

Lodge will sponsor a Pleasanton Little League Softball team.

Youth Leader Brenda Gonzales presented birthday gifts to Phillip Barta and Miranda Wiederhold. The youth club will have a fund raiser for the SPJST 100 Pennies Scholarship Fund Drive. Youth are seeking names of lodge members who are stationed in the war zone. Care boxes will be mailed.

FAC Mary Ann Barta announced an Easter hat contest for the March meeting. A base for the hat can be used and then decorated. There will be adult and youth categories.

Members present celebrating birthdays in addition to Phillip and Miranda are Joan Wiederhold, Ernest Spacek, and Regina House.

Anniversary celebrants are Ernest and Gussie Spacek (63 years) and Brenda and Domingo Gonzales (13 years).

The members of SPJST Lodge 156, Baytown express our deepest sympathy to the bereaved family of our departed member MICHELLE PAYNKEWICZ, age 28, who passed away on Friday, December 31, 2004.

She is survived by her mother, Debi Duke; stepfather, Robert Duke; sons, ages six and seven years old; brother; two grandmothers; and several other relatives and friends.

Visitation was held Tuesday, January 4 from 5 to 8 p.m. at Woodforest Funeral Home in Houston. The funeral service was Wednesday, January 5, 2005, at the Clear Point Church in Pasadena.

Interment was in Chapel of the Pins Cemetery in Crosby.

We, the undersigned Resolution Committee of Lodge Karel Havlicek 4, Hallettsville, Texas, on behalf of our entire membership, wish to express our sincerest and deepest sympathy to the bereaved family of our departed lodge sister, MARIE VOELKEL HOLY, who passed away on December 15, 2004, at the age of 86 years. She was born on April 1, 1918 to Otto and Leona Appelt Brogger, the oldest of four children. She was a member of the Catholic Daughters of America and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Women's Auxiliary. She enjoyed quilting, gardening, watching her soaps, listening to polka music, enjoying a really hot cup of coffee in the morning while reading her paper, a good hamburger, visiting with relatives at the annual Appelt Family reunion, being independent, and most of all, spending time with her family and friends.

Survivors include son, Paul Voelkel and wife, Theresa of Hallettsville; son, Jim Voelkel and wife, Cathy of Cuero; daughter, Linda Ward and husband, Dave of Austin; four grandchildren and four great-grandsons; sister, Ann Birkner of Hallettsville; and brother, Otto Brogger, Sr. and wife, Lazelle of Rockdale.

She was preceded in death by her parents; first husband, Arthur Voelkel; second husband, Alfred “Fritz” Holy; and brother, James Brogger.

Visitation began an noon, Saturday, December 18, at Kubena Funeral Home, Hallettsville. Rosary was recited at 6:30 p.m. Saturday, at Kubena Funeral Home Chapel. Mass was celebrated at 2:30 p.m., Sunday, December 19, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Hallettsville.

Resolution Committee Victoria Zak Gayenell Chudej Kathryn Woytek —SPJST—

We, the members of Lodge 40, El Campo-Hillje, wish to express our sympathy to the bereaved family of our departed lodge brother, VICTOR M. WIESNER, age 78, of E1 Campo who died Thursday, January 6, 2005. He was born on November 10, 1926 in El Campo to the late Frank and Agnes Dornak Wiesner. He was a farmer and rancher, having farmed rice with his brother John for 55 years and sons Rickie, Ronnie, and Glenn.

He served in the U.S. Air Force during World War II. He was a member of American Legion Post 251; a member of St. Philip the Apostle Catholic Church, having served on the Church Council as president and on the Financial Committee; a member of the Knights of St. Gregory; and a member of the SPJST Society. He was a Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus. He served as a director and past president of Wharton County Electric Co-op, served as a director with the South Texas Electric Co-op for 17 years, and served as a director and five years as president of the Hillje Czech Catholic Home.

A devoted and loving husband, father, grandfather and family man, he is survived by his wife, Margie Schoenfield Wiesner of El Campo; daughters and son-in-laws, Linda Wiesner of El Campo, Sandra Marek and husband Mark of El Campo; sons and daughters-in-law, Glenn Wiesner of El Campo, Rickie Wiesner and wife, Machelle of El Campo, Ronnie Wiesner of El Campo; grandchildren, Lindsey Marek Sohrt and husband, Matthew Marek, Kyle, Katie, Jacob and Shelby Wiesner; sister, Marie Smaistrla of El Campo; and brothers, John Wiesner of El Campo and Fred Wiesner of Wharton; and friends Donald and Cindy Priesmeyer.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and sister, Hattie Bolcik.

Visitation began at noon Saturday, January 8, at 1 p.m., at Triska Funeral Home. A parish rosary was recited at 7 p.m., at the St. Philip the Apostle Catholic Church. Funeral services were held at 2:30 p.m., Sunday, January 9, at St. Philip the Apostle Catholic Church with the Most Reverend Charles Grahmann and the Most Reverend David Fellhauer officiating. In Memory of Emma Havlak Emma Josephine Kvansicka Havlak passed away on January 4, 2005, in Ballinger.

A lifelong member in Runnels County, she was famous for her delicious kolaches, pies, cakes, and homemade candies which she shared generously.

She was a lifelong member of Lodge 49, Rowena and an ardent promoter of Czech heritage.

Emma was preceded in death by her loving husband of 62 years, Emil John Havlak; and son-in-law, the Honorable Richard Johnson.

She is survived by daughter, Mary Ann Johnson; grandson, the Reverend Joseph R. Johnson; granddaughter, Tonya. G. Wales; and namesake great-granddaughter, Emma Margaret Wales.

Recitation of the Holy Rosary was held on Thursday, January 6.

Requiem Mass was on Friday, January 7 with burial in the Evergreen Cemetery in Rowena.

Emma will be dearly missed by members of Lodge 49.

Youth Letters Section District Two Skating Party set for February 13 The annual District Two Skating Party will be held on Sunday, February 13, 2005, at Skate Haven in Temple. Lodge 1, Fayetteville Youth Club has been busy. We had an end of summer bowling party in Bastrop in August. We ended the night with a snack at Wendy’s. Fun! Fun! Fun! In September, we made “cool” Christmas ornaments. The feathers and fur were a-flying! One boy was covered in glue!

October found us making yummy kolaches after our meeting.

After our meeting in November, we played all kind of fun games in the gym.

Our Christmas party in December was celebrated with the adult lodge and the Chamber of Commerce. We exchanged gifts with each other. We also had a drawing for two prizes— one boy prize and one girl prize.

Lodge 47, Seaton Youth Club member Neil Rabroker, 11, presents a gallon jar of pennies to SPJST Fraternal Services Specialist Tammy Martinez. Neil and his grandfather, Anton Bravenec, delivered the donation to the 100 Pennies Scholarship Fund Drive on January 3. The drive continues through March 31.

We came up to our house and saw such a sight, as a lawn full of snow from the previous night! We rushed out to play and have our first snowball fight! I was first hit in the back, then the front, soon I could no longer feel my toes, and I rushed again inside.

Later on, we went to my Grandma’s where Nicholas built a snowman! Then came back home to a joyful white Christmas.

The next day as my brother was heading back to his house, we heard him exclaim, “Next year I’ll be saying, ‘I’m dreaming of a White Christmas. Just like the one I had.”

Lodge 6 Cottonwood Youth Club visits rest homes Dear Readers, We held our meeting on Sunday, January 2, 2005, after taking down all the Christmas decorations in the lodge hall. There were 12 youth and one guest present. A thank you card was read from the Assistant Youth Leader Lydia Dobecka for the Christmas gift she received from the youth and Youth Leader Peggy Dobecka.

Under old business, it was brought up that the Christmas crafts were brought to the two rest homes, and the prize drawing at the Christmas party turned out really good.

Birthday cakes were taken to West Haven on Wednesday, January 5.

I would like to thank the adults who supported us by riding the float with the youth club—President Mike Mogonye, Donny Cannon and Artie Monson. We received first place for overall best float.

Youth Leader Lisa Bubela surprised the youth by decorating the tables and providing hats, party favors, sparkling juice, and candy.

The meeting was called to order by President Jon Marcaurele. Jeremy Supak led the Pledge of Allegiance.

Secretary Stephanie Fucik called roll.

District Six Director Mike Ahlstrom and his wife, Kathy, were welcomed as special guests. Jon read a thank you note from Mrs. Bubela, thanking the youth for the Christmas gifts and good wishes. Kenna Bubela gave the treasurer’s report with no bills outstanding.

Members were reminded of the Camp Tee-shirt Design Contest. This year’s theme is “Soaring to New Heights” and incorporating our new mascot, Orel (the eagle). All youth are asked to join in the 100 Pennies SPJST Scholarship Fund Drive. A discussion was held regarding the tsunami international disaster relief efforts. A motion was made by Gerard Marcaurele and seconded by Danielle Zalman to donate $100 of club funds towards this massive relief effort. The club members unanimously agreed to send these funds to our SPJST Home Office for distribution to the Red Cross. Another community service project is the Galveston Beach Run benefiting the Galveston YMCA. Volunteers are welcomed to help along the route with water stations.

Upcoming dates to remember are: February 26—SPJST Awards Banquet in Killeen; March 6— District Six Spring Meeting in Moulton; April 3—Appreciation Banquet at TCC. Birthday honorees this month are Jayca Hernandez, Brandon Drapela, and Michael Ahlstrom.

To ring in the new year appropriately, all youth then individually presented a toast and/or New Year’s resolution. Winners of the best dressed for a New Year’s party were Danielle Zalman and Jacob Supak. All enjoyed party food and favors after the meeting was adjourned.

Lodge 30, Taiton Youth Club celebrates New Year Dear Readers, We had our January meeting on January 2, 2005, at 2:30 p.m. in Taiton Hall. We had a New Year's Eve celebration and contest for the best dressed!

The Pledge of Allegiance, prayer, and motto were led by James Supak.

Our club voted to send $100 to the tsunami victims, and we turned in our 100 Pennies Scholarship Fund Drive money. The Mardi Gras Beach Run is going to be January 29. The SPJST Awards Banquet will be held on February 26. Our own lodge banquet will be held on April 3. The District Six Spring Meeting will be held in Moulton on March 6. This year’s LIT Camp will be at Camp Val Verde in McGregor on June 3 through 6.

Each member then recited either a New Year’s toast or their resolutions for 2005.

January birthdays were myself, (Brandon Drapela), Jayca Hernandez and our visitor, District Six Director Mike Ahlstrom. He and his wife enjoyed the social, too.

The contest winners for best dressed were announced, and the girl was Danielle Zalman and the boy was Jacob Supak. Congrats to you both!

Our next meeting will be on February 6 at 2:30 p.m. for the youth.

Our craft, contest, and charity will be to make a valentine decoration and card to be donated to our area Hospice.

The meeting was adjourned, and we enjoyed refreshments of punch, birthday cake, chips, dips, and of course, black-eyed peas.

After a successful fall session with more than 30 students, a new session of the Czech language course is being planned in West this spring.

Classes will begin Tuesday, February 1, 2005, and will meet each Tuesday for 12 weeks. The classes will be held in the conference room at the West Public Library, located at 209 Tokio Road (FM 1858) in West, Texas. Meeting time is from 7 to 9 p.m.

The class is designed for beginning students even if they do not speak any Czech. Advanced students are also welcome, since it will be a good review of Czech grammar, along with some interesting presentations on Czech history and culture.
