In the Wednesday, March 23, 2005, issue, I believe the caption under Anna Michelle Burke’s lovely photo should read ‘Strani, Uherske Hradiste, Czech Republic’. I have relatives who live in the city of Uherske Hradiste and in smaller towns around same. My father was also from that area and immigrated to the USA in 1921.”

She received first runner-up honors at the Miss Texas Czech-Slovak Pageant, held March 19 in Victoria.

The pageant is sponsored by the Czech Heritage Society of Texas. The pageant is a great opportunity for young women to learn about and appreciate their Czech heritage. I represented Texas a few years back in the national pageant in Wilbur, Nebraska.

I was selected first runner-up both years that I competed for Miss CzechSlovak USA. The experience is something that I will always cherish.

Meeting other girls from across America who spoke the Czech language and felt so strongly about the Czech heritage was absolutely awesome. The pageant featured costume modeling, on-stage and private interviews, and talent. Of course, wearing a Czech kroj for three straight days in 100-plus degree weather wasn’t one of my favorite parts of the experience back then. But, looking back on it, I’d do it all over in a heartbeat. It was an amazing pageant, and the town of Wilbur was lovely and very Czech.

The pageant is a great way to Czech out your heritage, meet new friends, and have a great time. I encourage all young women between the ages of 16 and 26 to consider competing next year.

Through the end of March, the SPJST received 732 applications for insurance and annuity certificates. The goal of the Challenge 2005 membership drive is to write at least 2,640 applications.

In conjunction with SPJST’s Challenge 2005 program, local lodges have been assigned application quotas for the year. The lodge quota has been based largely on past performance and perceived potential.

State FAC plans spring, summer fraternal activities Hello, Fraternalists!

I hope that this letter finds you and your fellow lodge members in good spirits. In this month’s packet, you’ll find information on events like the annual State Horseshoe Tournament, Fraternal Flight Schools, National Join Hands Day, Texas Folklife Festival, Flag Day, and more. In addition to this letter, make certain to keep a sharp eye on your Vestnik for weekly updates and changes. To those lodges and members who I’ve had a chance to meet with personally, I say, “Thank you for your hospitality and warm reception.”

With our district spring meetings in full swing, we are constantly reminded that we belong to a great and unique Society. The fact that our Society maintains a healthy balance sheet while maintaining a network of active lodges is a positive reflection on the membership and personnel who are working diligently toward those goals on a daily basis. At the same time, the need to build our membership and improve the well being of all of our lodges remains a top priority.

Texas Folklife Festival The SPJST’s 108th birthday celebration will take place at the Folklife Festival in San Antonio on Sunday, June 12, 2005. Now in its 34th year, the festival is a fun-filled celebration of Texas’ rich and storied cultural landscape. Artisans, delectable dishes, and entertainers are just some of the attractions to be found at the Texas Folklife Festival. On the heels of releasing their latest recording, “40 Years of Family, Friends, and Fun”, Fritz Hodde and the Fabulous Six will be representing the SPJST as musical artists at the festival. Show times TBA. The SPJST invites you to come out and enjoy yourselves with friends and members of SPJST during our 108th birthday celebration. We will have a hospitality tent set up on-site that will serve as a “home base” for our members. Here, you will be able to get information about the festival, SPJST products and upcoming events, visit with other members, and take a short break from all of the fun the festival has to offer. Join Hands Day Looking for a way to get members of all ages together? Try using National Join Hands Day as the vehicle for doing so. It is always observed the first Saturday in May. This day helps to raise the visibility of fraternalism and fraternal organizations across the nation. This is an excellent way to convey a positive image about the SPJST and to help us send a strong message about how our youth and adult programs work together to improve our communities. Join Hands Day was created as a way of demonstrating modern fraternalism in action.

Also, this is an excellent opportunity for prospective members of our Society to learn more about us.

State Horseshoe and Youth Washer Tournament On Saturday, May 14, the SPJST State Horseshoe and Youth Washer Tournament will be held at the Jimmy Bryant Horseshoe Complex in Waco, Texas. This is a great facility that plays host to several Texas Horseshoe Pitcher’s Association (THPA) statesanctioned tournaments. The complex is located three miles west of I-35 on MLK/Lake Brazos Drive. There is a beautiful view along the Brazos River, and the complex features pro-

fessional, top-quality pits.

Registration deadline for the State Horseshoe Tournament is Friday, May 6. A $10 registration fee will include morning snacks and refreshments, a tee-shirt, a delicious catered barbecue lunch, a chance at awards and/or prizes, a door prize drawing, and most importantly, lots of fraternal fun!

Fraternal Flight School The SPJST Supreme Lodge is offering a fraternal flight school for SPJST local lodge officers! This is great timing too, since the SPJST will be “Soaring to New Heights” this year. Our first-ever Fraternal Flight School was held on March 17, at Lodge 30, Taiton. What a huge success it was! More than 40 lodge officers and members were present for a night of information and good-spirited fraternal fun. Fraternal Flight School workshops address the fundamentals of building a strong fraternal program, including how to conduct effective lodge meetings and establish clearly defined goals for your lodge. The SPJST Supreme Lodge will reimburse mileage for two vehicles per lodge so don’t let the high cost of fuel be a deterrent. We look forward to helping your lodge “Soar to New Heights” in 2005 by bringing a fraternal flight school to your district soon! Most dates and locations have been confirmed while others are TBA. ~ Casino Trip Date Confirmed ~ The casino trip to Kinder Grand Casino in Coushatta, Louisiana, has been set for Tuesday, June 14.

National Polka Festival of Ennis The SPJST will once again be a proud sponsor of the National Polka Festival! This is the 39th annual festival and will again be held on Memorial Day weekend in scenic Ennis, Texas. The three-day Festival will begin Friday, May 27 and run through Sunday, May 29. The festival features a wide array of sights and sounds that will please the eyes, ears, and palate! There are three spacious dance halls for your listening and dancing pleasure, each serving up a specially selected menu ranging from sausage and sauerkraut to roast pork – it’s always mmm, mmm, good! For more information, logon to nationalpolkafestival.com National Fraternal Congress President Vanicek recently attended the NFCA annual conference that was held in Phoenix, Arizona. He came back from the conference with some very good information and a renewed sense of fraternal commitment. Among the issues that are relevant to our organization, and to other fraternals, is the issue of existing paperwork and reports. As lodge FAC, it is your duty to keep track of your lodge’s fraternal support and community service activities throughout the year. Currently, the NFCA requires its member societies to submit, on an annual basis, a total of hours, volunteers, and expenses and/or disbursements related to these activities. Recently, each of you received a revised SPJST Lodge FAC Reference Guide that includes a form to help you do just that! These “trackers” are color-coded for your convenience—green for fraternal support activities and blue for community service activities.

We designed the tracker as a tool to assist you with recording your lodge activities on a monthly or an eventby-event basis. If you are ever in doubt whether to record an activity as “fraternal support” or “community service”, ask yourself this simple question: Was the event or activity performed on behalf of the lodge or sponsored by the Society? If the answer to either of these questions is

VĚSTNÍK yes, then it should be recorded and reported. Answering this question should make it easier for lodge FACs to determine if the act should be recorded towards your lodge’s monthly and yearly activities. Let’s work together to ensure that our Society is reporting its fraternal support and community service activities to the NFCA correctly and accurately.

Another topic of discussion at the conference was the recommendation by the joint committee on taxation to revoke the federal tax exemption for fraternal benefit societies. A similar proposal was made, and, I should note, rejected by Congress in 1984.

President Vanicek and our Society is working alongside other fraternals and legislators to prevent any such changes. We stand behind them and wish them much success!

Flag Day The SPJST Home Office will host its annual Flag Day ceremony on Tuesday, June 14. This is our way of honoring the Stars and Stripes and allowing the entire community a chance to see our patriotism and respect for time-honored traditions.

Texas Classic Barbecue Cook-Off and Car Show It’ll soon be time for some summertime fraternal fun! The SPJST is joining forces with the RVOS (Farmer’s Mutual Protective Association), which is also homebased in Temple, to bring you a very special event. Join us in BrucevilleEddy, Texas, on Friday and Saturday, June 24 and 25, where we are cosponsoring a Texas-sized barbecue cook-off and car show. The entry fee for the cook-off is only $75 with $5,000 in prize money up for grabs!

Besides the cook-off, there will be a car show for auto enthusiasts on Saturday, the 25th. There will be family activities, too! Special musical guests Lost Wolf will perform Friday night from 8 p.m. to midnight, and The Muddcatts perform Saturday, noon to 4 p.m. For more information on the cook-off, contact SPJST Supreme Lodge Vice President Gene McBride. State Youth Director announces fun youth activities Dear SPJST Youth Leaders, It is sure good to have the nice weather coming back. The year has gotten off to a great start. Already, I’ve had the chance to visit quite a few youth clubs throughout the state and am looking forward to the fun calendar year ahead. Best wishes to you and your family for a wonderful spring season.

Easter Eggstravaganza The SPJST hosted its Fourth Annual Easter Eggstravaganza on Saturday, March 26 at Lions Park in Temple.

What a crowd! Approximately 800 youngsters and their parents braved the weather to turn out for the event.

It may have been cold and threatening to shower, but the Lord was watching out for us. We were able to conduct the hunt and all of the related activities—without any rain. Even though it was chilly, everyone had a great time. Hunters collected 12,000 eggs.

Door prizes for youth and adults were also presented. To add to the fun, we also had on hand some balloon-twisting and face-painting clowns.

Special thanks to District Two Youth Counselor Patsy Koslovsky and the other SPJST lodge and Home Office volunteers who came out to help us with the event. Annual events like the Eggstravaganza help to promote the SPJST as a fraternal and giving organization—especially here in the Temple area where the SPJST has its Home Office. I’ve got to tell you, it was nice to wake up on Easter Sunday and see that our hunt had made the front page of the Temple Daily Telegram.

Kroj Vest Design Contest We are now in the process of holding our statewide Kroj Vest Design Contests in conjunction with our district spring meetings. All SPJST youth are being encouraged to enter.

The top place winners of each age group at the district level will go on to be judged at state level. Our first place artists in each age division at district level will receive watercolor pencil sets. First place winners at the state level will each receive their very own festive kroj vest, created especially for the SPJST by Maggie Grmela of Maggie’s Fabric Patch in West, Texas!

Please note that you have already received the kroj vest design contest guidelines; however, I do have extra copies of the entry form available for

those who need them. Also note that the contest rules regularly appear in the Vestnik.

Join Hands Day May 7, 2005 All youth clubs and lodges are encouraged to participate in a service project for Join Hands Day on Saturday, May 7. Join Hands Day is the annual national event when youth and adults connect as equal partners in planning an activity that fixes or improves a local problem and affirms the values of caring and working together. It’s a great opportunity for youth club and adult lodge members to get together on a project and make something good happen. The event is sponsored by America’s Fraternal Benefit Societies. Flag Day Essay Contest All SPJST youth between the ages of six and high school senior are encouraged to enter this year’s Flag Day Contest. This contest will promote patriotism and creative literacy.

There will also a coloring contest for members ages eight and under.

Several prizes will be awarded in both the Flag Day Contest and the Coloring Contest. All of the winners will be announced at the SPJST Flag Day Ceremony on Tuesday, June 14 at the SPJST Home Office. The deadline for all entries is May 31.

Camp Tee-Shirts Available This year’s camp tee-shirts are available for sale. The deadline to order is May 31. Tee-shirts will be delivered to the purchasers at summer

camp, or we can have them mailed to you.

Vestnik Projects Please make a note: The absolute last day that I will accept March, April, and May Vestnik projects is May 31 for the 2004 - 2005 youth year.

Youth Leaders Retreat April 29 - May 1 at Camp Lone Star The Youth Leaders Retreat will be held in La Grange at Camp Lone Star Friday through Sunday, April 29-May 1. This should be a very informative weekend as well as a great opportunity for everyone to get better acquainted with each other and with the youth program. Just as our LITs will be receiving CPR training at their retreat, youth leaders and their assistants will have the opportunity to receive CPR as well. This is an important skill for everyone to know — especially in the camping environment. We are also planning sessions relating to record keeping, Youth Achievement Day, and camp.

Leaders-In-Training Workshop June 3 to 5 High school youth club members (incoming freshmen to high school senior) are encouraged to become a Leader-In-Training and attend the LIT Workshop set for Friday, June 3 to Sunday, June 6. The workshop will begin on Friday at 7 p.m. at Camp Val Verde in McGregor. This year, we will be focusing on communication, teamwork, and safety, which are all part of being a good leader. LITs must have attended at least one year of SPJST camp in order to attend the workshop. Lots of learning and exciting activities are planned for the LITs. Youth club members must submit an LIT application and a green camp form to their youth leaders. The youth leader and the DYC must then recommend the youth to attend the workshop. LIT applications are due May 15 to your DYC. Merit Points due June 15 Merit points for the 2004-2005 youth year are due June 15. That’s the absolute deadline. No merit point sheets will be accepted after this date.

Peggy Sue and I will be totaling all points and determining the youth club, district, and state winners after June 15.

Mail these into the Home Office, and they will be forwarded to the sales representative listed on the card. If no name is listed, the referral will be directed to an active sales representative in your area. If you have any questions about the youth incentives associated with the Soaring to New Heights 2005 Membership Campaign, please call me.

Calling all Volunteers: Camp Val Verde Work Days The Camp Val Verde Work Days

VĚSTNÍK Project is gearing up for action! In partnership with Camp Fire, the SPJST is in the process of coordinating a fix-up campaign which will culminate with a three-day adult volunteer work session at the camp Tuesday through Thursday, May 31 - June 2.

All interested adults are invited to participate in the three-day project. I have identified three objectives that will be the primary focus or our efforts.

The first objective is painting the inside of the 10 small cabins at Val Verde. The cabins have never been painted, and years of use are showing.

Among the SPJST volunteers who have already stepped up to the plate on this project is Eugene Dolezal of Lodge 25, Ennis. Brother Dolezal recently solicited and received a donation of 30 gallons of paint donated from Sherwin-Williams Paint Company in Fort Worth and Waco for a combined total of 60 gallons of paint.

The second objective is to repair some of the doors and picnic tables around the area.

The third objective will be to eliminate all the tree stumps that are in the areas around the cabins.

I am compiling a roster of the people who will be coming out to help. If you or anyone you know would be willing to help with the Camp Val Verde Work Days project from May 31 through June 2, please contact me.

Any aid or assistance that you can provide will be appreciated—from food to feed the workers to cash donations to replace the old mattresses. With 125 mattresses at approximately $44 each, it’s a costly proposition. There’s a lot of work that needs to be done but I believe that it will be worth it knowing that we are making the camp a better place for our kids.

SPJST 100 Pennies Scholarship Fund Drive receives $13,063 SPJST’s 100 Pennies Scholarship Fund Drive for 2004-2005 began on October 1. There have been 1,011 donations made to the 2004-2005 SPJST 100 Pennies Scholarship Drive.

Donations to date are $13,063.75. SPJST Memorial donations to date are $3,412. Thank you for your generous donations to the SPJST 100 Pennies Scholarship Fund.

Because of your generosity, many young SPJST members will be able to attend or continue with college. This concludes the 2004-2005 SPJST 100 Pennies Scholarship Fund Drive. Any donations received between now and October 1, 2005, will be included in the 2005-2006 SPJST 100 Pennies Scholarship Fund Drive.

Guidelines for Giving 1. Donations made by lodges out of lodge funds will be listed as a lodge donation.

2. Collected donations from a lodge meeting will be listed individually by member’s last name in alphabetical order. Individuals submitting a donation will also be listed by member’s last name alphabetically.

3. Gifts of $50.00 or more will be printed in bold.

4. Families or groups, which desire names, listed under a particular last name or group name should indicate this on the donation form or letter, otherwise, the names will be listed as individual donations by last name in alphabetical order.

5. 100 pennies donations made as a memorial will be listed under memorial donations in a separate listing.

State Horseshoe Tournament May 14 at Jimmy Bryant Complex in Waco It’s time for some fraternal fun!

The SPJST invites you to participate in the 2005 State Horseshoe and Youth Washer Tournaments. The tournaments will take place on Saturday, May 14, 2005, at the beautiful Jimmy Bryant Horseshoe Complex in Waco, Texas.

This is your chance to experience fraternalism, fun, food, festivities, and friendly competition with your fellow members of SPJST! Check in time is at 9 a.m. with play beginning at 10 a.m. Prizes will be awarded to the top four competitors in both tournaments.

Both of the tournaments will be played in a round-robin format. The adults (age 16 and above) will pitch horseshoes and the youth (age 15 and below) will pitch washers. The horseshoe tournament will be a team (twoperson) format. Teams can be mixed (man and woman). The washer tournament will be separated into two divisions: D1 – ages 13 through 15 and D2 – ages 6 through 12. The washer tournament will be a singles format.

You must be a current SPJST member to participate in either contest!

For a $10 per person registration fee, you’ll get morning snacks and refreshments, a tee-shirt, a delicious

catered barbecue lunch, a chance at awards and cash prizes, a door prize drawing, and most importantly, lots of fraternal fun! District Seven sets April 17 spring meeting in New Braunfels The District Seven Spring Meeting will be Sunday, April 17, 2005, at Comal County Senior Citizens Center, located at 655 Landa Street in New Braunfels.

Lodge Officers, Leaders encouraged to attend Fraternal Flight School The sale of life insurance and annuities represents a very important part of the SPJST. Obviously—it’s the basis for membership and an important source of funding for our fraternal activities. However, by and of itself, it does not represent the only benefit to which the member is entitled. Membership in the SPJST can also be an invitation and an opportunity for each of us to lead, to encourage, to console and to inspire our fellow man.

Our lodges provide us with a natural structure and resources from which adults as well as youth members can reach out to each other and to their communities.

Where will your lodge be three years from now? That’s a good question—and it will be an even better one three years from now because then you will be living the answer.

Whether or not you like the answer doesn’t have to be a guessing game or left to chance. Your lodge’s future will be what you make it. To help you in this journey, lodge officers are invited to participate in one of the seven fraternal workshops that will be held throughout the state later this spring. The workshops are called “Fraternal Flight Schools” as a tie-in with our 2005 SPJST theme “Soaring to New Heights.”

Successful lodge meetings require a certain amount of structure.

Knowing what will be happening in the meeting creates a sense of comfort. A format that is the same for every meeting enables the group to efficiently take care of regular business, leaving the majority of the time to work on important agenda items.

Fraternal Flight School will address the fundamentals of holding effective lodge meetings and building a successful lodge program.

Fraternal Flight School will be divided into three parts. Part One of the workshop will cover meeting structure with an emphasis on parliamentary procedure. Part Two will suggest procedures for establishing and implementing long-term goals

and objectives for the lodge. Part Three will provide an open forum for lodge officers and other participants to discuss any challenges and concerns that they may be facing in their respective lodges.

Lodge and district officers are especially encouraged to participate in the workshops. Other active lodge members are also invited to attend and mileage will be reimbursed for up to two vehicles per lodge to attend the workshops. The regular monthly meeting for Lodge 5, Pilot Point-Tioga was held Saturday, April 2, 2005, at the Country Star Restaurant in Collinsville, Texas.

The meeting was called to order by our President, Jack Carender, at 2:15 p.m.

Bill Heitzman brought to our attention, a picnic in the planning for the near future. Please, members, we need some input as to what date, time, and where the majority of the membership would like to have a picnic. You may call Jack and Dean at (903) 564-7359 or Bill and Angie at (940) 437-5561.

President Leo Jares called the meeting to order at 7 p.m. Anton Machacek led the group in the Pledge of Allegiance. A moment of silence was observed in memory or our deceased members.

All officers were present with the exception of Rosie Shumbera.

Secretary JoAnn Jares read the minutes of the previous meeting.

Treasurer Henrietta Veselka presented the financial report for the month.

All reports were approved as read.

The Lifetime Achiever plaques were presented to the members who were unable to attend the District Six Spring Meeting in March. They are Christine Eschenburg, Melvin and Carolyn Tobola, and Frank Grunewald.

Anton Machacek received his award at the meeting.

A report on the Fraternal Flight School, which was recently held at Taiton, was shared with the members. Attending were Leo and JoAnn Jares, Erline Janik, and Henrietta Veselka.

Join Hands Day was discussed, and the members agreed to bring items for the Food Pantry at the next meeting.

Birthday wishes were extended to Gene Veselka, Clarence Pavlas, and Melvin Tobola. Best wishes go to these three young gentlemen of our lodge. Anton and Joan Machacek celebrated their 44th anniversary in March. Congratulations.

We wish A.J. Shumbera, who is on the sick list, a speedy recovery. Also, we send get well wishes to Marilyn Yates who is having foot problems.

Lodge 40 El Campo-Hillje celebrates members SPJST Lodge 40, El Campo-Hillje celebrated its award banquet on March 13, 2005, at the local lodge hall in Hillje. Lodge 40 was the winner of the Sapphire Award which was presented in February. This award was earned through the year of 2004 for all the hard work and sales our lodge insurance sales representatives did throughout the year of 2004.

What a great honor. The banquet was hosted for the insurance sales reps and our lodge members and guests.

A catered meal was served, followed by a social. Special guests were District Six Director Michael Ahlstrom and wife, Kathy, and District Six State Field Representative Karen Kaspar. What a great honor to celebrate! A special thank you to all the sales reps for a great year of sales and for all your hard work for our success.

Lodge 29, Taylor proudly announces hall renovations SPJST Lodge 29, Taylor was organized and received its charter on April 16, 1899. The lodge building was dedicated on July 4, 1934. The hall is located two miles east of Taylor, just north of US 79. Our physical address is 5025 FM 619.

Monthly Meetings Lodge 29, Taylor meets on the second Sunday of each month at 4 p.m.

Any member is welcome to attend the meetings, and we encourage them to do so. We also have a youth club program. Children can join during the year in which they turn six years old.

You do not have to be a member to come to any of the activities at the SPJST hall. We

have a family-friendly atmosphere.

We encourage everyone to come out and enjoy any events that we sponsor, such as the weekly dances on Wednesdays and Fridays.

The admission is free.

11:30 p.m. Some of the bands that play are Fritz Hodde, Sterling Country, Rising Stars, Texas Pioneers, The Lawmen, and The Outlaws. Also, on Fridays, the Thrall 4-H group makes old-fashioned hamburgers. This is our fraternal way of allowing them to earn money for their school projects.

Hall Renovations We recently hired Charlie’s Painting Company in Taylor, Texas, to paint and renovate the hall’s inside, downstairs and upstairs, and also, the outside of the building. Even though we hired out the painting of the building, there was a lot of additional work done by some members of Lodge 29.

Those workers include Jesse and Linda Pospisil, Frankie Pustejovsky, Frances Tallas, Bobby and Laverne Eulenfeld, Edmund Tate, and Edwin and Kathryn Adamek. We are proud of the appearance of the hall and welcome anyone to come out and see the changes we made. We will continue to make improvements to this historic hall as our funds allow.

Since it is a two-story building, we are capable of having two separate events inside the hall at the same time—such as a reunion downstairs and a wedding reception upstairs. On New Year’s Eve, we hosted a free dance downstairs and the Debonaires played upstairs.

Downstairs The downstairs will hold between 150 to 200 people and has a dance

area. The downstairs rents for $100.

We have a large kitchen that is available. If you use the kitchen, there is an additional charge of $50. There is also a barbecue pit outside that is available to use for events. The pit can cook approximately 35 briskets.

The barbecue pit rents for $75. The renter must furnish his/her own wood.

Game Room The downstairs also has a game room, which contains two pool tables, a jukebox, an air hockey machine, and other assorted electronic games.

Upstairs The upstairs of the hall can accommodate 500 people. Upstairs features include a large, wooden dance floor, a large stage, and a serving bar for beverages.

The north side of the building contains a freight elevator to transport band equipment or large decoration items that renters may need to bring in for wedding receptions or other events. The elevator can also be used for people in wheelchairs or walkers or anyone who is unable to climb stairs.

The upstairs rents for $500. We also charge $200 for security for the large events. For wedding receptions, renters have four hours of air conditioning time while they are decorating. If you don’t use the air conditioning, you can come and decorate any time while the hall is open during

the week of your event. If there is no function scheduled the day after your reception, you can come back the next day and pick up your decorations. We are more lenient on decorating because we are aware of the time it takes to set up for a wedding and we want you to be happy and enjoy your special event. The upstairs is always locked so no one is allowed upstairs without the hall manager opening the doors for you.

First Wednesday ‘42’ Dominoes On the first Wednesday of each month, the senior citizens gather to play ‘42’ dominoes from 2 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. A covered dish meal is served afterwards. Anyone of adult age is welcome to join in on the fun.

Annual Barbecue Cook-Off The Lodge 29 Annual Barbecue Cook-Off is held in September. The hall sits on four acres of land so it can accommodate 125 spaces for cookers. The lodge provides water connections and limited electricity.

If the barbecue cookers have their own generators, they are encouraged to bring them.

Superbowl Party Lodge 29 also hosts a Superbowl Party each year. Attendees bring various food dishes. The hall provides stew. We have door prizes and a prize drawing. Everyone watches the game and munches on delicious food.

RV Hook-Ups If you have relatives or friends coming into Taylor who drive motor homes, Lodge 29 allows them to park on the hall’s property if there is not an outside function. The price is $10 per day for the use of the hook-ups.

Open five days each week Lodge 29 is one of the few SPJST lodges around the state that is open for business five days each week.

The operating hours of the hall are: Sunday—open at 12 noon Closed Monday and Tuesday Wednesday thru Friday—open 3 at p.m.

Saturday—open at 2 p.m.

Lodge 40 El Campo-Hillje presents meeting minutes Vice President Sheldon called the meeting to order at 2 p.m. on February 13, 2005, with 40 members and four guests present. The Pledge Allegiance was recited. A moment of silence was observed for the deceased members and ill in the community.

Roll call cited all officers present accept President Ardis Bacak due to illness.

Trustees were all present. Absent was Ardis Bacak.

Secretary Debbie Sczech read the minutes of the February 13, 2005, meeting. Correction was made on the minutes. Motion was made by Tria Svatek to accept the minutes and seconded by J.C. Kocurek. Motion carried.

Communications were read by Secretary Debbie Sczech. She read three scholarship letters from Meagan Smith, Jason Smith, and Heather Smith; the lodge refund check was $4,980.50; a Boy Scout letter for donation; and Wharton

VĚSTNÍK County appraisal form was read.

The treasurer’s report was prepared by Lorraine Kana.

FAC Dee Floyd announced that the March 13 meeting will be the awards banquet and a catered meal will be served. No RSVP will be taken. The meeting will start at 11:30 a.m.

Audit committee had no report this time.

Youth Club Leader Jennifer Kunetka gave the youth club report.

Special guests were District Six Youth Director Marcy Dorotik, District Six Director Michael Ahlstrom, and State Youth Director John Hoelscher.

Bingo Committee—Diane Seaman was called upon. She stated that she did not have anything to report.

Snack Bar—Josephine Bacak gave the bar report with sales of $601.65.

Hall Rental Chairman Tria Svatek reported upcoming dates: March 17 and April 2—bookings; May 2— booking; June 2—booking; and July 5—booking.

The cemetery report was presented

by Vlasta Bartos. She discussed the meeting in Moravia. They will be doing repairs and need donations for these repairs.

The roof committee had no report.

The District Six Barbecue CookOff will be held September 16 - 17 at our lodge hall.

The mowing committee stated the yard was mowed February 4.

The resolution committee had no report.

A total of eight new members were welcomed to our lodge.

Sales representative reports were given for all the reps who attended the meeting.

There was no old business.

New Business New business discussed included mileage to the February Award Banquet—36 cents per mile should be paid with two people per car. A motion was made by Tria Svatek to approve paid mileage and seconded

by Lorraine Kana. Motion passed. A benefit fund raiser will be held for Chris Gold. Motion was made by Karen Holub to give a donation of $50; seconded by J.C. Kocurek.

Motion carried. Boy Scout donation of $50—motion was made by Tria Svatek and seconded by Debbie Sczech. Motion carried.

The meeting of Lodge 66, Waco was called to order by President John Engelke on March 20, 2005, at 2:30 p.m. at Linden Hall in Elm Mott with all officers present. There were 20 members present and two guests— Supreme Lodge President Gene McBride and his lovely wife, Frances. We were so very happy to have you visit us. Please come again.

The youth presented the flag and led the Pledge of Allegiance and Motto.

Members stood for a moment of silent prayer for Johnnie Gaidusek, Sr. who passed away. May he rest in peace.

Secretary Dana McAdams read the minutes of the February 20 meeting, and they were approved as read.

Sister Dana also read a thank you note from Bonita Montgomery on behalf of the Trevlyn Winder family concerning the benefit at Linden Hall.

Chairman of the Board George Pauling reported that the board met today at 1:30 p.m. and had Darlene Engelke read the minutes of that meeting.

Janie Dujka gave the Entertainment Committee report. She reported that today sloppy joes, chips, pickles, and desserts will be served. For the April 17, meeting the committee will serve macaroni and meat sauce with desserts being furnished by the committee. Members need not bring any food to the meeting.

Fraternal Activities Coordinator Mary Alice Langlotz reported that she received her monthly letter from State FAC Michael Morris, and she read it to the members. She also reminded members of the District Three Spring Meeting to be held on April 24 at Lodge 6, Cottonwood.

Youth Leader Debbie Galler gave the youth report. There were four youth and three adults present. They discussed the Easter egg scavenger hunt which will be held today. The youth will attend the Easter Eggstravaganza, which is to be held on March 26 at the Temple Lions Park at 10 a.m. On April 2, the youth will participate in the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure at Heritage Square at 8 a.m. On April 9, the youth will go bowling at the Westview Lanes at 2 p.m. and on April 16, the youth will participate in the Care Net Walk for Life at Providence Hospital at 9 a.m.

Lodge 66 will make a generous donation to the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure. Lodge 66 made a memorial donation to Lodge 92, Fort Worth in memory of Martha Durham.

President John Engelke will deliver the donations he has collected for the SPJST 100 Pennies Scholarship Fund Drive by the end of the month of March. Lodge 66 members voted to make a $500 donation to the scholarship fund. Thanks to all who have made a personal contribution.

We were honored to have Supreme Lodge Vice President Gene McBride with us today. Brother Gene spoke to the membership on various interesting subjects. He also reported that Louis Hanus passed away on Saturday, March 19. Brother Hanus was the District Five Director for

Lodge 84, Dallas hosts Vrazels this Saturday Dear Members, A moment of silence for Sisters Martha Durham and Mary Nemec was observed. May they rest in peace. Our sympathy is extended to the families.

Correspondence was read by Secretary Cheri Petr and later, President Justine Yeager asked for reports from the committees.

House Committee—We thank Brother and Sister Adolph Salac for taking the donations to the Brady Center and Brother Adolph with the help of Darren Tucker for fixing the light fixture that had come loose and thanks to Brother George Reznik for donating a fan for the stage and installing it. We also appreciate our teen club for beautifying the parking area—painting and scraping, etc. where it was needed. Thank you so much, and thanks to Lodge 130 for inviting our members to join them in October for a camp-out.

The Czech Culture Society met for an appreciation dinner and meeting.

According to Brother Ben Jarma, Sister Bessie Petr and her help really pleased the dinner crowd with her spaghetti, meat balls, and all the trimmings.

The Fraternal Council will meet at the Czech Club for its April meeting.

Dallas KJT and KJZT are hosts.

Youth Leader Bessie Petr reported both clubs are busy preparing to host YAD which will be held at our lodge this year.

Kathy invited everyone to the District Two Spring Meeting at Lodge 47, Seaton, Star Hall, on March 20. Registration is at 1 p.m and the business meeting is at 2 p.m.

Kathy thanked Harvey Laflamme and Louis Driska for the delicious hamburgers tonight. Harvey suggested that every other month would be a good plan for providing food at our meetings and volunteered to cook for our May meeting.

Youth Leader Brenda Gonzales stated the youth club members will ride the SPJST Float in the Poteet Strawberry Festival Parade. A meeting and social will follow at Pizza Inn. A membership drive is being planned and also an activity for the Join Hands Day on May 7, 2005.

District Youth Counselor Wendy Pruski noted dates of upcoming events.

FAC Mary Ann Barta will recognize Everyday Heroes in the near future.

Seaton School reunion April 24 Come one, come all to the annual Seaton School Reunion on Sunday, April 24, 2005, at the Seaton Community Center, located eight miles east of Temple on Highway 53.

All Seaton School former students, teachers, bus drivers, relatives, and community members are invited.

In Memoriam In Memory of Bill Canady William (Bill) Roger Canady, Senior Master Sergeant, Retired U.S. Air Force, age 75, passed away at home on March 26, 2005.

Bill was a resident of Austin, Texas, from 1970 until 1997 at which time he met and married the love of his life, partner and soul mate, Iola Mae. He moved to Lockhart where he lived and ranched with his beloved Iola, until diagnosed with terminal cancer of the head and neck area in 2004. They then moved back to Austin for Bill’s treatments.

Bill was born at South Creek, North Carolina, on July 16, 1929, to Mark Bisco and Alma Griffin Canady. After Bill graduated from Aurora High School in 1948, he joined the Air Force in August, 1948, and served on active duty until his retirement in March, 1973. After retirement, he went to work as a civilian employee at Bergstrom AFB from September, 1973, until his retirement in November, 1993.

Bill was a member of the Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church on Bee Cave Road. He was a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) and the Retired Enlisted Association (TREA). He was also a member of the American Military Society. Bill was a member of SPJST Lodge 18, Elgin, where you could usually find him and Iola on a Sunday afternoon dancing to the good old polka and waltz music.

Memorial services for family and friends was held at. 2 p.m. on Saturday, April 2, at the Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church, located at 3525 Bee Caves Road in Austin, Texas, with Reverend Stephen M. Youngdahl officiating.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and first wife, Winifred Kelly Canady.

Surviving him are his wife of eight years, Iola Mae Canady; daughter, Suzette Jean Magness and husband, Kenneth of Austin; sons, Timothy Lee Canady of Albuquerque, New Mexico; Terrace Michael Canady and wife, Anna of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, Thomas Joseph Canady and wife, Jennifer and grandson Devon Everrett Canady of Austin; Patrick Kevin Canady and wife, Carol; grandchildren Amber Leigh and Patrick Ryne of Sparks, Nevada,

Mrs. Cecilia Valigura was born August 4, 1924, in Bremond. A loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother went to be with the Lord on March 4 in Houston with her family at her side.

She was a member of Holy Cross Catholic Church since 1950 and served in the Altar Society for many of those years.

Mrs. Valigura enjoyed gardening and canning. She

crocheted many blankets with her loving hands for all her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She made many doilies and other craft items and was always sewing and mending for everyone.

She also enjoyed walking with her friends at the track in East Bernard.

She was a member of Lodge 28, where she served as a youth leader several years. The lodge is thankful for her time, skills, and gifts.

She is survived by her loving husband of 59 years, Frank Valigura; children, Carolyn Janik and husband, Marvin of Elmendorf, Alice Quinn and A.J. Marie Frances was born January 2, 1917, at Double Header, Texas. She was the daughter of the late John and Marie Chaloupka Klinkovsky. She attended the Lost Prairie School.

She worked at Scott and White Hospital for 18 years as a housekeeping supervisor. She retired in 1982.

She first married Johnny Olejnik who preceded her in death in 1960. She then married William Hegar of West.

He preceded her in death in 2004.

She was a lifelong member of the Seaton Brethren Church as well as a member of SPJST Lodge 47, Seaton and RVOS 24.

She is survived by son, Larry Olejnik and wife, Carol of Houston; daughter, Mrs. Betty Wilkinson of San Diego, California; brothers, John J. Mrs. Blazek died Tuesday, March 15, 2005, at St. Joseph Regional Health Center in Bryan. She was born in Brenham on February 7, 1916, and lived in Bryan most of her life. She retired from Texas A&M’s Department of Agriculture after 33 years as a secretary.

Besides her membership in SPJST Lodge 189, Bryan-College Station, she was also a member of Shiloh Baptist Church and the Edge Senior Center. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her.

Services were held at Memorial Funeral Chapel in Bryan, on Saturday, March 19 at 2 p.m. The Reverend Keith Pettiway of Shiloh Baptist Church in Franklin officiated.

Burial followed in Bryan City Cemetery.

Sister Blazek was preceded in death by her husband, Fred Blazek.

She is survived by son Gary Blazek of Bryan and numerous nieces and nephews.

In Memory of Gardena Kristof Graveside services for Gardena V. Kristof, 90, were held on Monday, January 17, 2005, at Restlawn Memorial Park Cemetery with Minister Jacob Vincint of Eighth and Harrison Church officiating.

Gardena was born on October 20, 1914, in Caldwell, Texas, to Frank B. and Vlasta Dusek. She married Emil J. Kristof on October 10, 1937. They moved to Harlingen in 1943 and farmed locally for many years.

Gardena was a longtime employee of Abigail’s Dress Shop in Harlingen and had many friends. She was a member of the Eighth and Harrison Church of Christ. She was also a member of SPJST Lodge 164, Rio Hondo for many years where she also served as an officer.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Frank and Vlasta Dusek; husband, Emil J. Kristof; brothers, Alvin and Milton Dusek; and sisterin-law Beverly Dusek.

She is survived by daughter, Emilie (James) Carmichael of Nova Scotia; sons, Kenneth (Linda) Kristof; and Garland (Brenda) Kristof of Harlingen; brothers, Hubert (Gerry) Dusek of Rio Hondo, and Frank Dusek of Harlingen; grandchildren, Kurt (Melanie) Carmichael of Harlingen, Matthew Kristof and Preston Kristof of Austin, Texas, Melissa (John) Byrum of Harlingen; and special great-grandchildren, Greg, Nick, and Bryan Bynum.

Youth Letters Section Lodge 9, Snook Youth Club visited by SYD Dear Vestnik Readers, At our March meeting, State Youth Director John Hoelscher visited our youth club. He spoke to us about upcoming SPJST events and how being in SPJST has helped him in life. He brought us ice cream and all the fixings and some cool door prizes. Our youth club looks forward to working with Mr. Hoelscher at camp and other activities.

I also presented Mr. Hoelscher with two checks, one for the 100 Pennies Scholarship Fund Drive and one supporting the Tsunami Relief Fund.

At the March meeting, we made Bluejay Spirit pins for our craft.

The April meeting had to be changed due to youth club members participating at the National Little Dribbler’s Tournament in Levelland, Texas. Good luck to all team players.

Lodge 13 Dime Box Youth Club reports on March meeting Dear Vestnik Readers, The March meeting of SPJST Lodge 13, Dime Box Youth Club was held on Sunday, March 20 at 1 p.m.

Dale Korth called the meeting to order. The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Mark Klecak. Roll was called, and there were 11 members and four adults present. Dale read the minutes, and Dawn Rackel read the treasurer’s report.

Under old business, the LIT retreat is June 3 to 5. Mrs. Sharon has the applications if you are planning on going. Charity items were given to Mrs. Sharon. This month’s charity was to bring items for Jehovah Jirah.

Under new business, our next meeting will be on April 10 at 12:30 p.m. at the hall. Then, we will go to the spring meeting at New Tabor. A Christmas Card Design Contest will be held at the spring meeting. See page 41 in the rulebook.

Lodge 25, Ennis Youth Club to sell strudels at festival I went to the adult meeting on March 10. I won the door prize that Mr. Hoelscher brought. I won a hat that looks like a flag. We had hot dogs and Mr. and Mrs. Dolezal made homemade stew for the adults.

Mommy said hers was good. I especially liked the cake!

And on Sunday, we went back to the hall for the Easter egg hunt. I especially liked the cookies!

Hope to see everybody downtown on April 15 through 17 for the Bluebonnet Festival. We are going to sell strudels all weekend that the ladies from the big lodge made— homemade!

I can’t wait for YAD and camp this year so I can see all my friends.

Lodge 25, Ennis youth wins door prize

We went to the March adult meeting and had hot dogs and fruit for dinner.

We sat next to John Hoelscher, and he was telling us stories about when he went to camp and about other halls and youths clubs.

He is very nice.

We had our youth club Easter egg hunt on Sunday, March 10. I didn’t find too many eggs, but I had a lot of fun seeing all my friends and eating a lot of cookies.

We talked about selling strudels on April 15 to 17 downtown, too. That sounds like fun.

Poison Ivy

Identifying the Plant

Approximately 85 percent of the population will develop an allergic reaction if exposed to poison ivy, oak or sumac, according to the American Academy of Dermatology. Usually, people develop a sensitivity to poison ivy, oak or sumac only after several encounters with the plants, sometimes over many years.

However, sensitivity may occur after only one exposure. The cause of the rash, blisters, and infamous itch is urushiol (pronounced oo-roo-shee-ohl), a chemical in the sap of poison ivy, oak and sumac plants. Approximately 500 people could itch from the amount of urushiol covering the head of a pin. Urushiol oil can stay active on any surface including dead plants for up to five years. The symptoms of poison ivy contact begin to appear between 12 and 36 hours after exposure.

They include itchy, burning rash followed by small blisters and in severe cases, large blisters and swelling. All parts of the plant are toxic in all seasons.

Poison Ivy (Toxicodendron radicans) Poison Ivy can be a climbing or trailing vine, a shrub or even a small tree. The leaf edges can be smooth, toothed or deeply notched. New leaves are red in spring and dying leaves are yellow. Fall leaves are yellow, orange and red.

The plant produces small, greenish-white clusters of flowers in spring and white, waxy, berry-like fruits in fall.

Several variations of the old adage “Leaves of three, beware of thee” proclaim the warning- typical 3-leaf (occasionally 5-leaf) clusters on a single stem identify it.

Burning leaves of Poison Ivy are particularly dangerous because the toxin is carried in the smoke and can cause serious respiratory damage if inhaled.

Poison Sumac (Toxicodendron) Poison Sumac reacts very much like Poison Ivy, but it looks very different. It is also usually only found in very wet, wooded regions of Texas, typically in the east. It can be a tall shrub or small tree.

The leaves are arranged in pairs of 3 to 6 with a single leaf at the terminal end of the stem. The fruits of the Poison Sumac are a whitish green hanging fruit. There are non-poisonous varieties of Sumac, which appear similar, yet their fruits are red and upright. The same procedures should be followed as for Poison Ivy exposure.

Quick Action Needed Because urushiol can penetrate the skin within minutes, there's no time to waste if you know you've been exposed. "The earlier you cleanse the skin, the greater the chance that you can remove the urushiol before it gets attached to the skin," says Hon-Sum Ko, M.D., an allergist and immunologist with FDA's Center for Drug Evaluation and Research. Cleansing may not stop the initial outbreak of the rash if more than 10 minutes has elapsed, but it can help prevent further spread.

If you've been exposed to poison ivy, oak or sumac, if possible, stay outdoors until you complete the first two steps: First, cleanse exposed skin with generous amounts of isopropyl (rubbing) alcohol. (Don't return to the woods or yard the same day. Alcohol removes your skin's protection along with the urushiol and any new contact will cause the urushiol to penetrate twice as fast.)

Second, wash skin with water. (Water temperature does not matter; if you're outside, it's likely only cold water will be available.)

Third, take a regular shower with soap and warm water. Do not use soap before this point because "soap will tend to pick up some of the urushiol from the surface of the skin and move it around," says Epstein.

Clothes, shoes, tools, and anything else that may have been in contact with the urushiol should be wiped off with alcohol and water. Be sure to wear gloves or otherwise cover your hands while doing this and then discard the hand covering.

Stipendium české hudby a kultury na Severotexaské universitě založeno Brian Vaníček Reverend Frank J. Kostohryz se narodil v Novém Táboře v Texasu v roce 1898 a věrně sloužil v církvi Bratrské jednoty v Texasu až do své smrti v roce 1971. Jeho duchovní činnost, většinou v českém jazy ce, se dotkla takřka všech členů v celé jednotě. Mezi nimi byly sbory ve Westu, Seally, Seatonu, Ennisu, Hollandu, Smithville, Fayetteville, Vsetíně, Templu, Ockeru, Crockettu, Snooku, Caldwellu, Dime Boxu, Dallasu, Industry, Veselí, Nelsonville, Nový Táboře, Placedu, a Antonu.

Sňatek Reverend Kostohryza s Hermínou Hurtovou ze Shiner, Texas v roce 1924 hluboce ovlivnil nejenom jeho osobní život, ale i jeho duchovní službu. Hermína se stala nejen jeho věrnou manželkou a partnerkou v životě, ale byla také šoférkou, varhanicí a učitelkou ve skoro všech sborech, kde Reverend Kostohryz sloužil.

Na památku svého otce a matky jejich syn Dr. Frank Kostohryz nedávno daroval více než 200 tisíc dolarů na založení stipendia české hudby a kultury České vzdělávací nadace státu Texasu a Reverend Franka J. a Hermíny Kostohryzových na Severotexaské universitě v Dentonu, Texas.

Předání tohoto daru bylo oznámeno na nedávné výroční schůzi nadace v Hlavní úřadovně Slovanské podporující jednoty státu Texasu.

Odborný poradce nadace Sidney Kacíř se zasloužil o předání daru, který umožní podporování české hudby a kultury v celém Texasu a vymě nu moravských umělců a pro-

fesorů, uspořádání hudebních festivalů a konferencí a šíření naší hudby po celém Texasu zvláště do oblastí, kde žíjí naši krajané.

“Nepomíjející horlivost pro evangelium a pro sborovou práci hluboce oblíbily Reverend Kostohryza a jeho manželku Hermínu mnohým generacím Texanů našeho původu,” rekl president CEFT Marvin Marek, . . . “dobrosrdečný dar Dra. Franka Kostohryza na památku rodičů pomůže udržovat jejich jméno v paměti krajanů prostřednictvím stipendia, které bude pojmenováno jejich jmény . . . ” Dar Dra. Kostohryze upravuje dosavadní částku na 325 tisíc dolarů.

Stipendium bude plně založeno po složení částky 400 tisíc dolarů.

Nadace byla založena v roce 1954, podporovala vyučování českého jazyka a kultury na středních a vysokých školách a oslavila padesátileté výročí v roce 2004. Nadace tradičně věnovala stipendia do roku l984. Od té doby se nadace soustředila na sbírku stipendia pro založe ní katedry českého jazyka, literatury a kultury na Texaské universitě v Austinu, Texas v roce l991 a CEFT a J.W. Hlavinkovo stipendium pro katedru anglistiky na Texaské A a M universitě v College Station, Texas v roce 1999.

Nadace byla odměněna za práci pro šíření české kultury v zahraničí cenou Ministerstva zahraničí České republiky Gratias Agit Jana Masaryka v roce 2000. V dalších letech ředitelé nadace a jejich přízniv ci uvažovali o dalším stipendiu pro některou universitu v Texasu. Ředitel Dr. Jim Bezděk a jeho manželka Rose upozornili na práci Dra. Tomáše Sovíka, profesora hudby na Severotexaské universitě v Dentonu, Texas, který projevil rozsáhlý zájem o českou hudbu a české hudebníky a po dobu 10 let pořádal zájezdy na výměnu s Janáčkovou akademií musických

Miss Travis-Williamson Czech-Slovak Queen Miss Katelyn Issleib represented Travis-Williamson in the Miss Texas Czech-Slovak Queen Pageant on March 19, 2005, at the Czech

Heritage Society State Meeting in Victoria, Texas. She was chosen second runner-up and won first place in the interview with the judges.

Katelyn lives in Round Rock, Texas.

She is the daughter of Terry and Sharon Hodon Issleib and the granddaughter of Bill and Deane Hodon of Pflugerville and Donna and Elroy Issleib of Austin. Katelyn’s mother, Sharon, is a member of SPJST Lodge 29, Taylor.

Katelyn is a sophomore at Hendrickson High School. She is a member of the band where she is a co-captain of the color guard. She also competes in twirling competitions at local, state and national contests. She is a member of the Student Council, and is the HHS Class of ‘07 historian. She is active in her church where she leads a weekly youth Bible study and attends the youth group activities. She has participated in four mission trips with her youth group in previous summers, working with under-privileged children, and painting/re-roofing homes. Katelyn plans to attend college majoring in education and communications.
