I found this neat story that reminds me a lot of decisions and college days: “What’s the matter, kiddo?” asked Grandpa.

Delores sighed. “Oh, Gramps, life is so complicated.”

“Well, it’s only as complicated as you make it,” said Gramps with a chuckle.

“I mean, I just want to make the best decision. If I do that internship for a year, it will delay my graduation.

And I wouldn’t be able to work, plus I need a new car. But if I don’t take this internship—” “Have you ever heard of the ‘rocking chair test’?” Gramps interrupted, offering his rocking chair to his granddaughter.

“Gramps, this is serious,” Delores pouted.

“I know, that’s why I’m telling you this,” Gramps counseled. “I want you to sit in this chair and imagine that you’re my age looking back on your life as it would be a few years from now—after all these decisions have been made. And whatever you do,

keep rockin’; it helps you think.

“For instance, do you really need a new car now?” Gramps continued, pushing the back of the rocker slowly.

“What is more important—graduating in four years or getting experience that might benefit you later on in life?”

“Well, when you put it that way, Gramps, my choices seem pretty clear,” said Delores. “This old rocker really does put things in perspective!”

“Of course it does.” And Gramps smiled. “How do you think I’ve live such a long, happy life?”

A barbecue meal will be served beginning at 11:30 a.m. Plates will include barbecue brisket, sausage, and trimmings. An auction will begin at 2 p.m. followed by a dance with all your favorite music. State Horseshoe Tournament this Saturday in Waco It’s time for some fraternal fun! The SPJST invites you to participate in the 2005 State Horseshoe and Youth Washer Tournaments. The tournaments will take place on Saturday, May 14, 2005, at the beautiful Jimmy Bryant Horseshoe Complex in Waco, Texas.

This is your chance to experience fraternalism, fun, food, festivities, and friendly competition with your fellow members of SPJST! Check in time is at 9 a.m. with play beginning at 10 a.m.

Prizes will be awarded to the top four competitors in both tournaments.

Both of the tournaments will be played in a round-robin format. The adults (age 16 and above) will pitch horseshoes and the youth (age 15 and below) will pitch washers. The horseshoe tournament will be a team (twoperson) format. Teams can be mixed (man and woman). The washer tournament will be separated into two divisions: D1 – ages 13 through 15 and D2 – ages 6 through 12. The washer tournament will be a singles format.

You must be a current SPJST member to participate in either contest! For a $10 per person registration fee, you’ll get morning snacks and refreshments, a tee-shirt, a delicious catered barbecue lunch, a chance at awards and cash prizes, a door prize drawing, and most importantly, lots of fraternal fun!

Dear Members, The results of the vote count for the change to By-Law 93(a), which increases the maximum mortgage loan amount from $250,000 to $400,000 is as follows: For—28,912 or 87.85 percent Against—3,729 or 11.33 percent Votes Abstained or Invalid— 271 or 0.82 percent Total Votes Received—32,912 The recommendation has passed, and the SPJST is now taking mortgage loan applications up to

$400,000.

Article 93(a) of the SPJST ByLaws now states: “No one individual or corporation may have total loans exceeding $400,000. This limitation does not apply to SPJST Lodge Buildings or S.P.J.S.T. Rest Homes.”

SPJST records 994 applications written through April in Challenge 2005 campaign Through the end of April, the SPJST received 994 applications for insurance and annuity certificates. The goal of the Challenge 2005 membership drive is to write at least 2,640 applications.

In conjunction with SPJST’s Challenge 2005 program, local lodges have been assigned application quotas for the year. The lodge quota has been based largely on past performance and perceived potential.

The fourth column, “Youth Club Quota,” applies to those lodges with youth clubs and reflects applications written for members between the ages of 0 and 17. “Youth Club” totals are applied toward the lodge’s total quota.

The sixth column, “Lodge Incentive Count,” reflects the number of new certificates issued for the Lodge Recognition and Incentive Program.

Lodge Letters Section Lodge 6 Cottonwood mothers honored at meeting Hi! Brother Johnnie Krizan called our “Mother’s Day Meeting” to order on Sunday, May 1, 2005, at 2:30 p.m.

Lakn Dieterich and Anna Dulock led all in the Pledge of Allegiance.

Courtney Halbert recited the motto.

Sister Georgie Soukup reported 30 members and one guest, Adolph Kolar, present.

Brother Johnnie called upon Sister Peggy Dobecka, Youth Leader, for the Mother’s Day tribute. Thanks to all the youth for the beautiful carnation and roses passed out to all the moms. Hey, and thanks guys for the delicious meal you served up. Mmm, good!

Sister Barbara Jean Hykel read the minutes from our last meeting. They were approved as read. There was correspondence from Brother Brian Vanicek, Supreme Lodge President in Temple, regarding tax exemptions on fraternal and charitable organizations.

Brother Johnnie called upon Sister Peggy Dobecka, treasurer, for her report. It was approved as given.

She also gave the District Three Spring Meeting report and the domino tournament report. These reports were accepted as read.

Financial Secretary and Hall Manager, Brother George Straten, was called upon for his report. He reported two adult and two juvenile transfers to our lodge, being the David Dobecka family. They were accepted. Welcome to the lodge and hope to see you folks soon.

Brother George reported bookings for the month of June—our socials on June 3 and June 17 and our meeting being on June 5. Socials for this month are May 6 and May 20. He had thank you notes from Rural Hill EMS and from Care Net Pregnancy Center.

Sunshine Committee, Sister Jerelene Lenart, gave her report of sending a sympathy card to Wilford Rieger. Get well cards were sent to Brothers Raymond Marek and C. W. Cernosek and Sister Lydia Dobecka.

Glad these folks are doing better.

Fraternal Activities Coordinator, Sister Barbara Jean Hykel, gave her report. She mentioned the upcoming State Horseshoe Tournament on May 14. She thanked all who helped with the District Three Spring Meeting.

Sister Barbara also mentioned that there was a slight correction to the Lifetime Achiever Awards since one of the nominees had received it last year. The recipients for this year are Evelyn Bezdek, Jerry Kucera, Johnnie Krizan, Terry Hykel, and Keith Hykel. Congratulations!

Brother Krizan called upon Sister Peggy Dobecka, Youth Leader, for her youth report. She reported taking cakes to the rest home on April 6 and again on May 4. Sister Peggy mentioned that the youth have been busy with getting ready for District Youth Achievement Day and district camp.

Sister Peggy reported a good attendance at the District Three youth meeting with 31 members and six guests present. John Hoelscher, State Youth Director, was present at their meeting. She mentioned that the youth and adults of the lodge would be working together on May 7, Join Hands Day, cutting down a tree and planting trees at the lodge. Their next socials will be May 6 and May 20.

Board of Trustees’ Chairman, Brother Milton Peterson, was called upon for a report. He reported that a trustees’ meeting was held on April 15 with 21 members present. Plans were discussed in regard to the hall renovations and buying of new cookers. Brother Milton also mentioned that if anyone was interested in donating towards our picnic prize drawing, he would need to know by May 20 (our next social). He mentioned that flyers were ready for our upcoming picnic with luncheon plates being $4 for small plates and $6 for large plates and plates to go.

Sister Evelyn Bezdek, Contributions Committee Chairman, thanked President Johnnie Krizan for his help in taking care of the delivery of more than 370 cans of food. It was learned at this meeting that the cans went to the West Ministerial Alliance and were delivered to the First Baptist Church in West. Sister Evelyn, along with committee members Georgie Soukup and Irene Peterson, presented a $100 check to Adolph Kolar for the Little League Boosters Club. Thanks for coming, Adolph.

Those in attendance with a birthday in May were Brother John Muehlstein and Sister Ruth Krizan.

Most of you have already read the nice report in the last Vestnik regarding John turning 96 on May 12.

Congratulations, John, and we wish you many, many more. Pretty soon, you may catch up to your brother, Ed, at 100 years young. Hooray to both these gentlemen!

Here’s wishing all of you a happy birthday who were born in May. Congratulations to Kenneth and Melanie Peterson! They will be celebrating their 16th wedding anniversary this month. They now have a three-month-old son to help them celebrate. Congratulations!

SPJST LAM Receives Funds SPJST Supreme Lodge Chairman Donnie Victorick presents a check for $5,000 to SPJST Library, Archives and Museum Treasurer Margaret Haisler. The contribution was approved by delegates at the June, 2004, SPJST Convention.

Perez, and Second Vice President Milton Peterson drew door prizes.

The $5 attendance door prize was won by Mary Marek.

Congratulations! Progressive door prizes were drawn with the drawing of Rose M. Uptmor and Ben F. Mynar, both not present. Now, I bet Rose wishes she had listened to me when I told her about this meeting and to come.

The Mother’s Day table decorations at the officer’s table were beautiful. Drawing for these two decorations were won by Sisters Georgie Soukup and Peggy Dobecka.

Congratulations and Happy Mother’s Day! Ladies, we have to decide what we will be doing for the men next month since it will be “Dad’s Day” in June.

I don’t know if we can top the men with our meal, but we will try.

Lodge 47, Seaton readies for June 5 picnic Dear Brothers and Sisters, The meeting of Lodge 47, Seaton, was held on Sunday, May 1, 2005, at 2 p.m. President Calvin Skrabanek opened the meeting, and youth club members Jerry Pechal and Matthew Hoelscher presented the flags and led the assembled in the Pledge of Allegiance.

We remained standing in memory of Stanley Broz, District Four Director, who had funeral services on April 30. Sympathy is extended to the family.

The visitors were recognized— Jerome Greger and Aubrey and Wilbur Richter. Please come again as we treasure your presence.

Sister Adeline Kohutek read the roll of officers, trustees, and sales representatives. All officers and trustees were present.

Thanks were received from the families of Gladys Kovar and Marie Hegar for flowers sent to the funerals of their loved ones. Deepest sympathy is extended.

Sister Kohutek read a poem, “Do You Just Belong?” from President Brian Vanicek. These really apply to so many.

Then officers’ reports followed.

President thanked everyone for coming to the meeting and he requested that the mothers stand in honor of Mother’s Day on Sunday, May 8. Happy Mother’s Day to all mothers. He also announced that the sausage for the picnic was made, and that head sausage, jitrnice, is being sold at this time.

First Vice President Dolores Skrabanek stated that she enjoyed attending the Fraternal Flight School held at the SPJST Home Office. She also commented on ASCAP and said she brought a book on parliamentary procedure for James Skrabanek.

Second Vice President Amanda Greger gave her FAC reports. May 14 - Horseshoe Tournament in Waco; June 12 - Folklife Festival; June 14 Flag Day at the SPJST Home Office; and June 24 - RVOS/SPJST Barbecue Cook-Off and Classic Car Show at Bruceville-Eddy. Please refer to the Vestnik for times of these events.

Gladys Marek gave her treasurer’s report. Woodrow Marek gave the bar report for April, and David Pechal gave the kitchen report.

Edwin Marek brought some mesquite wood to be used for barbecuing. Thanks. The wood was unloaded after the meeting.

Picnic—June 5 The picnic will be here before we know it. They are preparing to serve 700 plates consisting of sausage, fried chicken, German potato salad, cole slaw, beans, and desserts brought by the lodge members to complement the plate. We are also asking for items in the sweet booth, bingo and auction. Be so kind as to bring for each booth.

The meal will be served from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Then, hamburgers and French fries will be available from 2 p.m. until ? in the annex building, manned by Edwin Vasicek and his crew. David Coufal read a poem that Brother Michael Morris, State FAC, sent for Mother’s Day. Heidi Bartek gave the youth leader’s report. There were 20 members present with a new member, Bailey Fulton. The youth will meet at 12 p.m. on June 5, the day of the picnic. Afterwards, they will be working at the dunking booth and bottle throw that they will be in charge of. They are still collecting the pull tabs from cans for the Ronald McDonald House.

The results of their elections are President Amber Pechal; Vice President Crystal Morris; Secretary Neil Rabroker; Treasurer Matthew Hoelscher; Reporter Rena Greger; and Sergeant-at-Arms Christopher Zavodny.

There are three girls who are going to compete for district queen. Good luck to all who will be running.

The April meeting of Lodge 48, Beyersville was held on Sunday, April 10. President Wuensche led us in the Pledge of Allegiance. We held a moment of silence for our sister, Lawanna Zucknick.

We took a little time to discuss the Barbecue Chicken Dinner. We were happy to acknowledge help from our sister Lodge 29, Taylor. Rita and Wayne Kelm put in a lot of grunt work, and we appreciate it very much. Also, Jerry Tallas and Jessie Pospisil helped prep and barbecue the chickens. We also want to thank all the folks who brought desserts. Jerry Turek put in some grunt work, too.

Jerry is always there to help us at these functions and we appreciate it very much. But most of all, we want to thank all of you who bought tickets or supported us in other ways to help make this a success.

As you may have seen already, we recently received a donation from Tranum Ford. Karl Wuensche, one of Ford Motor Company’s Master Mechanics, is a member at our lodge and he was included in the picture.

Even if you drive a Chevy, he probably is willing to let it drive on the lot and get repaired. In fact, he even fixed my Mazda, once or twice!

Lodge 49, Rowena hosts 60s dance this Saturday Lodge 49, Rowena will be hosting a 1960’s dance on Saturday, May 14 at the SPJST Hall in Rowena. It will be from 7 to 11 p.m. The music will be by a local disc jockey. A lot of music will be from when Jimmy Heap played at the SPJST Hall. It is BYOB, and set-ups will be available.

Everyone is invited to come on out and enjoy a night of fun.

the last few months, you are sure missing out. Robert Leshikar and Sherry Wuensche, along with Bionic Bobby (my dad), have made great strides with the walls. Sherry has been putting in a lot of time helping varnish and paint. It looks like a professional from the DIY network was out there. (DIY- Do It Yourself) Robert and Bobby—well, I think that they were supervising the whole operation, but they say they were working. Really though, Robert and Bobby have put a lot of labor behind getting the carpet installed and cutting, sanding, and installing the varnished walls. Very soon, the floors will be getting their extreme makeover.

By the time that you read this, we will have had our May meeting, and we wish all the mothers a very happy Mother’s Day. Don’t forget to join the Ladies Out at Bunco night. It is on the second Tuesday of the month at the hall.

Fund Raiser in September Be watching for more details on the September fund raiser. It will be better than ever this year. We are planning on giving away three top prizes this year—one grand prize and two other prizes that will be a little less in value, but will appeal to all of us. Is the suspense killing you?

et as soon as they are hot off the press. We have several other changes in mind as well, especially in regards to air conditioning. Now, if you think that you are going to miss the sweltering heat, you can go outside and listen in, but I am pretty sure that you would be willing to give up that comfort to sit in the air conditioned hall.

I have to apologize for being so late in writing, but I have been dealing with the residual health care from my cancer. As you can see, it may sap my strength sometimes, but it never has my humor or my spirit. If you, too, are under cancer’s spell, keep the faith. Don’t let it ever take away who you are while it may take away what you are. With God, all things are possible. Even with death knocking at our door, we can stay strong in our faith and know that God is with us come what may. Until next time . . .

Lodge 66, Waco welcomes new agents The meeting of Lodge 66, Waco was called to order by Vice President Mary Alice Langlotz due to the absence of President John Engelke on April 17, 2005, at 2:30 p.m. at Linden Hall in Elm Mott. All officers were present with the exception of President John Engelke. There were 20 members present.

The youth presented the flags and led the Pledge of Allegiance and Motto.

Members stood for a moment of silent prayer for Henry Gerlich and Johnnie Gaidusek, Sr. Secretary Dana McAdams read the minutes of the March 20 meeting, and they were approved as read.

from Supreme Lodge SecretaryTreasurer Lanita Anglin concerning the Internal Revenue 990. She also read a letter from Supreme Lodge Vice President Gene McBride concerning the lodge incentive program.

Dorothy Veselka read a thank you from Sister Irene Mueller who had knee surgery and is doing better.

Sister Darlene Engelke read a thank you from Johnnie Gaidusek, Jr. for the SPJST Memorial in honor of Johnnie Gaidusek, Sr. Chairman of the Board, Brother George Pauling, reported that the board met today at 1:30 p.m. and had Secretary of the Board Sister Darlene Engelke read the minutes of that meeting.

FAC, Sister Mary Alice Langlotz, reported that she received her monthly letter from State FAC Michael Morris. She also reminded members of the District Three Spring Meeting in Cottonwood which is to be held on April 24.

Sister Janie Dujka gave the Entertainment Committee report.

Today, macaroni and meat sauce, green beans, salad and dessert will be served. For the May 15 meeting, we will celebrate both Mother’s Day and Father’s Day with the committee furnishing fried chicken, salad, potatoes, rolls, and cake.

Sister Darlene Engelke gave the bookkeeping report due to the absence of Bookkeeper Diana Engelke.

Youth Leader, Sister Debbie Galler, reported that the youth met today. There were three youth and two adults present. She reminded the youth of the District Three Czech Kroj Vest Design Contest. Flag Day Essay Contest entries are due by May 31, 2005. She also reported that Christopher Johnson did his coloring

Lodge 88 Houston reports on members’ activities Landon Warren Zahn came into this world on April 18, 2005, weighing seven pounds, six ounces. Mom and dad, Melissa and Steven Zahn, are the beaming parents and doing fine. Proud grandparents for the first time are Carol and Donnie Havemann and Jerry and Ada Zahn.

Great grandparents are Tony and Agnes McClosky as well as active Lodge 88 member Gladys Havemann, and the baby holds her late husband’s Warren Havemann’s first name.

A fun-filled trip to Nashville, Tennessee, and other places of interest recently was enjoyed by Louise

Jacobs, Willie Mae and Hilbert Pechacek, Almeida Bravenec, Charlie Pustejovsky, Patsy Hoepfl, Jane Hoepfl, Della and Dennis Ermis, J. J. and Irene Havlik, Mary and Ed Lorenz, and others from around the state.

Wedding bells rang out for two Lodge 88 couples since my last writing.

Karen Bender wed Jim Hargraves, Jr. on February 19 in Needville, Texas. The reception was held at Lodge 81, Needville. (Karen was the 1996-1997 SPJST State Queen.)

Best wishes also go out to Carol Liebscher who married A. J. Stayton on March 19 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Cat Springs, Texas, with best man being Melvin Stayton and matron of honor was Vernell Keating.

Their reception was hosted by William and Bonnie Hegemeyer and family. Also, Carol added that the wedding would have been on what would have been her father Herman Liebscher’s 101st birthday. All the best to both couples!

E. J. and Jeanette Bender enjoyed a memorable trip to San Francisco in March where they attended the Allstate DPA Conference wherein Jeannette was awarded the Distinguished Performance Award.

(Only two percent of the Allstate employees receive this award each year!) Keep it up, Jeannette!!

Unfortunately, just when you think the weather gets nicer, my get well list seems to grow. Our known sick list is as follows. Please keep these wonderful folks and their families in your prayers: Calvin Orsag, Lydia Marsh, Johnny Kosut, Edna Wehring, Steve Kelly, Nathan Gonzales, and Marie Stayton. If I’ve missed anyone or if the lodge can do anything to aid

Another newsworthy item I must pass along at this time is that our lodge secretary/treasurer, Roberta Johnson, has resigned from the ranks as of the past week or so. Roberta has weathered many issues that have come through the office and has been the ‘buffer’ so to speak as well as a loyal and professional employee of Lodge 88. Her laughter, good spirits and all-around capability to change gears as fast as any race car driver has been proven over the years many times over. It certainly takes a special person to take over those controls, and we were blessed to have her as long as we did. She will be missed by an army of people!! Lodge 88, Houston announces dance dates We are pleased to announce that Lodge 88, Houston, located at 1435 Beall in Houston, will be hosting western dances on the fourth Sunday of each month from 3 to 7 p.m. The first will be on May 22, 2005, featuring Liz Talley and TNT Country.

On June 26, the Wild River Band will provide the music.

We are a non-smoking facility.

However, we have provided a smoking area outdoors.

Lodge 88, Houston presents April meeting minutes The April meeting was called to order at 7:30 p.m. by President Pat Bruce. Sidney Jurchak gave the invocation followed by the Pledge of Allegiance.

Secretary Sherry Miller read the names of the deceased members— Loyette Matthews, Betty Kutach, Vlasta Porter, Edward Zarosky, and Frank Nedbalec, Jr. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and approved as corrected. The treasurer’s report was

President Bruce requested the donation checks of $500 each be delivered to the March of Dimes, ExPrisoners of War – Gulf Coast Chapter, and the Houston Fire Department Pipe and Drum Corp.

The list of 50-year members was read. Pins were given to the three recipients present—Alice Bily, Lowrina Lindemann, and Royal Warnasch.

First Vice President Carolyn Filipp congratulated the Lodge 88 Orchestra for playing at the Czechfest. She stated the lodge had a good representation at the District Five Spring Meeting. The new committee books have several mistakes.

Under the officers list, the fraternal activities coordinator is Esther Heinsohn. Under the district officers, the secretary is Dorothy Pflughaupt.

A page with the corrections will be available at the May meeting.

FAC Esther Heinsohn reported 972 fraternal hours for March and requested everyone report their hours on a monthly basis.

Youth Leader Barbara LinneyGonzales’ report was given by Marian Kadlecek thanking everyone who helped make the Easter party a success. It was noted that Lowrina Lindemann had four generations of her family at the party. The youth club will be spending the night on the

AUSTIN NEELY Austin Neely of Houston, Texas, was awarded the SPJST Lodge 91, Crosby scholarship for $500. Austin is a graduate of North Shore High School and will be attending San Jacinto Junior College majoring in zoology. He is the son of Kathleen and Tom Munsch and Joe Neely and the grandson of Lodge 91 Treasurer June Smesny. The officers and membership of Lodge 91 congratulate Austin and wish him the best of luck in his future endeavors.

Entertainment Committee Chairman Betty Theiss reported on the dance schedule and recognized her committee members by having them stand as she thanked them for their hard work.

Chairman of the Board John Broz thanked Cleburne Lincke and Dennis Roeder for assisting in repairs at the lodge. He reported that the ice machine will need to be replaced in the near future, and the fence across the back of the lodge property will be installed next week. The first fourth Sunday dance will be May 22 from 3 to 7 p.m. All members are requested to help promote this dance.

President Bruce announced that the Awards Party date has been changed to July 31, 2005. This is the fifth Sunday.

Kitchen Chairman Dennis Roeder thanked everyone who worked for him during the rodeo. There is a sign-up sheet at the registration desk for those who want to work for Homecoming.

Lowrina Lindemann reported that the Birthday Sisters meal for the April meeting will be sausage and covered dish. The cost for non-members is $4.

Men’s Club Chairman A.J. Stayton advised that the members on the sick list are Nat Gonzales and Calvin Orsag.

Scholarship Chairman Carol Havemann reported the committee recommendation to give two $500 scholarships. The motion was seconded and passed. The scholarships will be awarded at the May 9 meeting. Carol found another yearbook mistake and requested that Carol Globke be added to the Scholarship Committee.

District Five Director Larry W. Pflughaupt reported briefly on the District Five Spring Meeting. There will be a Fraternal Flight School at Lodge 88 on April 25 conducted by the SPJST Fraternal Department. A meal will be served at 6 p.m. with the officers training at 7 p.m.

President Bruce showed a poster to recruit sales representatives. The lodge voted to display a smaller version to assist in this effort.

District Five State Field Representative Lynn Johnsen reported on District Five sales.

Guide Josephine Pflughaupt reported we had 79 in attendance.

She read the birthdays and anniversaries. Door prizes were awarded.

A day in the life of rodeo mascot, Ms. Moo, who can hokey pokey, too

By Kristin Finan Houston Chronicle — March 5, 2005 Contractually, Howdy cannot speak to me.

That’s right — the giant, Hshaped mascot of the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo doesn’t grant interviews to members of the media. Someone else can give me comments, his handler said, but Howdy’s lips were sealed.

Just as well. My first question, “What are you?” probably would have offended him. Still eager to learn about the life of a rodeo mascot, I headed to the Red Barn Dairy, where Ms. Moo, a bow- and earringclad dairy cow (and Howdy’s girlfriend, if you believe rumors I was unable to confirm) was dancing for a group of elementary school students.

Was mum the word for Moo, too?

Of course not, said Carolyn Allen, a.k.a. Mama Moo, who invited me back into Ms. Moo’s dressing room and offered me a doughnut.

‘A magic cow’ “The kids say she’s not a real cow, and you say yes, she’s a magic cow. She’s the spirit of all the cows at the rodeo,” Allen said. “You know, what else are you going to say?”

Allen, 65, developed Ms. Moo — whose mission is to make the AGventure section at the rodeo more memorable for children — in 1993 as a member of the Ladies Go Texan Committee. For years, she appeared as the beautiful bovine exclusively until the committee decided to ease that burden by allowing multiple volunteers to transform into the cow.

“The first year we got the new suit, I worked 52 shifts and I lost 25 pounds,” she said, attributing the weight loss to the sweating done in

her new role. “With God as my witness.”

As she spoke, the current incarnation of Ms. Moo waved at passersby.

Sometimes she does the macarena, Allen said. Sometimes the hokey pokey. But always from behind the fence of the Red Barn Dairy.

“The barn came about the third year I did Ms. Moo because the children will be tacky to her,” Allen said.

“They like to run up and hit her, and you can’t see in the suit. It’s sort of like having tunnel vision.”

If the head fits A few minutes later, I too was seeing the world from Ms. Moo’s eyes, thanks to Allen’s insistence that I don a spare head. It was hot, heavy and I couldn’t see a thing.

“That’s why you always have a handler,” she said. “We lead you around, because it’s too hard otherwise.”

During non-rodeo times, Ms. Moo frequents the school and hospital circuit, participates in fashion shows and is even available for private parties. But the rodeo is her real time to shine, Allen said, which is why she can be seen at the barn from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. every day.

“She gives the children something to identify with,” Allen said.

Sick Committee reported Lawrence Schilhab and Ruth Kieschnick are home now from the hospital. Ms. Lorraine Motl is doing okay, but needs three or four months more to recuperate.

The capsule prize for $40 went unclaimed due to the absence of Grace Ann Kieschnick, Priscella Perez, and Catherine L. Worsham. At the next meeting, the prize goes to $50. Come and win! Cash prizes went to Sidon Tumis, Elizabeth Hermis, Alice Jochen, and Elmo Walther. Refreshment prizes went to Gunnar Owens, H.R. Hermis, Joe Gambil, and Mary Ann Kieschnick.

Celebrating birthdays in April were Bernice Walther, Joe Gambil, Rita Hermis. April anniversary congratulations went to Frank and Dorothy Tumis, celebrating 56 years on April 19.

Lodge 169 Brenham meets June 21 Lodge 169, Brenham, Bluebonnet lodge, met for its regular meeting on April 19, 2005, at the Knights of Columbus hall.

Fried chicken was bought by the lodge, and side dishes were brought by the members. Everyone enjoyed the meal.

The meeting was called to order

by Sister Annette Bilski who led the Pledge of Allegiance. A silent prayer was said for the sick and departed.

District One State Field Representative Bill Orsak and his son attended the meeting. He also brought door prizes which were won

by Brother Haak, Sister Lenora Bliznak, and Sister Rosie Buggi.

Secretary, Brother Steven Bliznak, read the minutes which were approved as read. Sister Glenda Weyand gave the treasurer’s report.

The new brochures put out by the SPJST Home Office were explained

by Brother Orsak.

The lodge officers training meeting held at SPJST Lodge 186, Caldwell on April 26 was attended by Sister Annette Bilski, Brother Steven Bliznak, Sister and Brother Bill Haak, and Sister Glenda Weyand.

They reported the meeting was real

informative and had a good time.

The lodge still has some cookbooks to sell.

Next Meeting—June 21 The next meeting will be on June 21 at the KC Hall at 6:30 p.m.

Everyone enjoyed the fried chicken so we will have chicken again at the June meeting with everyone bringing a side dish.

Lodge 177 Academy gives to Relay for Life President Kathy Fritz called the meeting to order at 7:05 p.m. All officers were present except Secretary Joanne Hutka. Treasurer Josie Mitchell did double duty tonight by taking the minutes. Thank you, Josie! Members recited the Pledge of Allegiance.

The Sunshine Committee reported that a get well card and gift certificate have been sent to Lorie Golemon. It was also reported that Theresa Baca and Juanita Reyna were not feeling well; that Bea fell in the parking lot at the mall on Good Friday and broke her knee cap; and that Jackie Beck will be having eye surgery next Thursday.

Committee reports for March, 2005 were presented.

It was requested that Academy Lodge 177 join the walk Relay for Life on April 23 at the Temple High School track. Lodge 177 voted that $1,000 be donated to the walk and that $500 be spent on a silent auction item at the cancer relay.

Louis brought a place mat from the Awards Banquet.

Christine Beck brought pizza for tonight’s meeting and volunteered to bring pizza for the May meeting as well. Thank you, Christine!

Social on June 8 FAC Jackie Beck announced that our June social will be on June 8 at Yank Sing Restaurant beginning at 6:30 p.m. Jackie also announced that Harvey LaFlamme will be celebrating his birthday on April 26 (Happy Birthday, Harvey!), and Alex and Martha Garcia celebrated their 56th wedding anniversary on March 22.

Helen Bland was thanked for coming to the hall and being on hand while Academy School students took the TAKS test recently.

There will be an awards banquet on May 9 where four $250 scholarships will be awarded. A representative from our lodge will be there.

SPJST Dance—May 21 Our next SPJST dance will be Saturday, May 21, 2005, from 8 p.m. until 11:30 p.m. Free Country will provide the music. Hosts for this dance will be the SPJST East Texas Cloggers. In honor of Armed Forces Day, the theme will be red, white, and blue. Show your colors. Members of all services, past and present, will be recognized during the first break.

The Cloggers will present a black light exhibition during the second break. Be there, as it will be a great show!

Lodge Dues It’s that time of the year again. It’s time to pay your dues. The cost for regular members (those who have an annuity or insurance certificate from SPJST) is $12. The cost for social members is $15. Assistant Youth Leader Belenda Barta reported the youth club is planning to spruce up the grounds of the Jourdanton Community Center for the Join Hands Day project.

FAC Mary Ann Barta talked about the Pleasanton Softball Team the lodge is sponsoring. Plans are for lodge members to attend a game on May 12. A photo/plaque of the team was displayed.

District Seven FAC Pruski announced forthcoming events.

The lodge picnic is Sunday, June 5 at the Pleasanton Country Club beginning at 4 p.m. The lodge will furnish hamburgers, hot dogs, and all the trimmings. Members are asked to bring desserts, games, lawn chairs, and a friend. Swimming is available for a nominal fee.

In Memoriam Expression of Sympathy We, the Resolution Committee of SPJST Lodge 84, Dallas and on behalf of the entire membership, wish to express our sincere sympathy to the family of our departed lodge sister, MARY FRANCES NEMEC, age 95, who died on March 17, 2005, in Dallas, Texas. Sister Mary was born on August 25, 1909, to Mary Ann Kopeky and Frank Nestrole in Dallas where she lived her entire life.

She married Charles George Nemec, II in 1940, and to this union had three children—Mary Ann, Charles George, III, and John Anthony Nemec.

Sister Mary was involved in numerous activities throughout her life. She was a full time wife, mother, Girl Scout Leader, garden lover, bridge player, lifetime member of PTA holding several positions through the years, and of course, a member of SPJST Lodge 84 for over 70 years. She loved music, too, and played the piano with style—and what style it was. She accompanied Czech plays, singers, and dancers.

She was known in the Czech community by her bounce on the piano bench when she played. Both she and her husband played in several dance bands, and both were original members of the Dallas Czech Concert Orchestra in which they played for many years.

In 1991, after the death of her husband, Sister Mary moved into Twelve Oaks Retirement Center where she lived until her death.

Sister Nemec is survived by her three children; 10 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

On Sunday, March 20, the family

received friends at Grove Hill Funeral Home. Funeral services were then held on Monday, March 21 at Grove Hill Funeral Home Chapel followed by interment at Grove Hill Memorial Park.

Resolution of Sympathy The officers and members of SPJST Lodge 154, Fort Worth express our deepest sympathy to the family and friends of ELIZABETH L. GREGORY, age 91, a homemaker, who died Saturday, April 23, 2005.

Funeral service was held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, April 27 at St. George Catholic Church. Burial was in Mount Olivet Cemetery.

A wake was held Elizabeth Gregory at 7 p.m.

Tuesday, April 26 in Mount Olivet Chapel.

Elizabeth was born December 13, 1913, in Fort Worth. She was a member of St. George Catholic Church, honorary member of the Altar Society, member of Sokol and SPJST Lodge 154, Fort Worth, and a past member of the Ladies Circle.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 68 years, Joseph Gregory.

Survivors include children, John

Lewis Gregory, Alice Hunter, Babe Harlow and husband, Johnny; sister, Frances Bailey; nine grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Mount Olivet Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Expression of Sympathy We, the undersigned Resolution Committee of Lodge Karel Havlicek No. 4, Hallettsville, Texas, on behalf of our entire membership, wish to express our sincerest and deepest sympathy to the bereaved family of our departed lodge sister, MAGDALINE “VAHALIK” EBNER of Yoakum who passed away on Thursday, January 27, 2005.

She was born on September 6, 1918, in Lavaca County to Emil and Frances Wick Hermes. She was a homemaker, a retired nurse’s aid, a rancher, and a member of Queen of Peace Catholic Church in Sweet Home. She was a member of the Sweet Home VFW Auxiliary, American Legion, the Yoakum Hospital Auxiliary, and SPJST Lodge 4, Hallettsville.

Survivors include daughters, Rebecca Cyr and Nelda Kaiser, both of San Antonio, Sarah Hamilton of Coppell, Joyce Holster of Stafford, Barbara Ward, Emily Drozd, and Mary DeBord, all of Yoakum; stepdaughter, Debbie Ebner of Hayward, California; sons, Edmund Vahalik, David Vahalik, and Charles Vahalik, all of Yoakum; stepson, Phillip Ebner of San Diego; sisters, Lelia Faye Hermes of Hallettsville, and Lillie Mae Janak of Sweet Home; brothers, Ernest Hermes of Hallettsville and Ervin Hermes of Olivia; 23 grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and a step greatgrandchild.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Ed R. Vahalik, Jr.; second husband, Robert “Boots” Ebner; sister, Evelyn “Missy” Linnsteader; and brother, Julius “Fritz” Hermes.

She married Victor Dusek on November 9, 1937, and together they spent 40 wonderful years. She was a member of Vsetin Czech Moravian Brethren Church and former member of SPJST Lodge 16, Bila Hora, which is now consolidated with Lodge 4, Hallettsville, for over 50 years.

Survivors include sons, Victor Dusek, Jr. of Houston, Marvin Dusek of Austin, and Royce Dusek of Hallettsville; nine grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by husband, Victor Milton Dusek, on August 13, 1977; daughter, Annie Mae Dusek; sister, Augusta Pustejovsky; and brothers, Victor Will Melnar and Clifton Melnar.

Visitation began at 2 p.m. on Sunday, March 6, at Kubena Funeral Home in Hallettsville, Texas. A prayer service was held at 7 p.m.

Services were held at 10 a.m.

Monday, March 7 at Vsetin Czech Moravian Bretheren Church with Reverend Henry Beseda officiating.

Burial followed at Bila Hora Cemetery.

Leader Jennifer Kunetka and Assistant Youth Leader Debbie Sczech also attended. We attended a training class on CPR. We also went over arts and crafts rules for YAD, which will be on July 10 hosted by Lodge 40, El Campo-Hillje.

Changes were made in our rule books. We also discussed the merit point system and incentives.

Group discussions followed.

On Saturday evening, we joined together for a steak dinner and awards. Our entertainment was a murder mystery. What a wonderful challenge we had solving the mystery murder case. The training sessions were great.

We met at Star Hall instead and elected new officers. We talked about camp and YAD. Our next meeting will be June 5, the day of our lodge picnic. Všichni se (to) velmi divili. Všichni vynikající sportovci se

zúčastnili (olympijské hry). Už se těším (prázdniny). Děkuju vám (váš podpis).

Naplnila sklenici (voda) a podala nám ji. Matka se bála (její těžce nemocné dítě). Děkuju (vy), že (můj syn) tolik pomáháte. Po mnoha letech výzkomu jsme konečně dosáhli (úspěch). Matka se stará (dvě malé děti). PolárníI cestovatelé nejvíce trpěli (chlad a vlhko). Můj bratr hraje docela dobře (housle).

My všichni si (vy) velice vážíme.

Nevím jak dál, musím se zeptat (cestal. Děti si hrály (vojáci). Ten domek je sice náš, ale zahrada už (my) nepatří. Pokaždé, když řekl nějakou hloupost, všichni se (on) smáli. Já skáču do výšky a bratr hází (oštěp) ( = javeline). Když vynášel dítě z hořícího domu, vůbec nemyslel (nebezpečí). Píšu dopis (můj starý přítel). Já (ten člověk) znám, ale nemůžu si vzpomenout (jeho jméno).

Byl tak unavený, že už skoro nemohl hýbat (nohy).

Czech Texans extend warm greetings to Prague Radio On Monday, April 26, 2005, the Texas Czech Heritage and Cultural Center was privileged to have several important visitors.

Honorary Czech Consul of Texas Raymond J. Snokhous and wife, Clarice Marik Snokhous, escorted Mr. Miroslav Konvalina, Czech Radio Correspondent for the Radio Zurnal Cesky Rozhlas, Prague, Czech Republic, to the Center. They were welcomed at the Kalich House

by Retta Slavik Chandler, Chairman of the TCHCC Board of Directors, and more than 30 Czech Texans from La Grange, Schulenburg, East Bernard, Austin, Houston and surrounding areas.

Gene Lichnovsky of Houston on the keyboard and Chris Rybak of Austin on the accordion entertained the visiting dignitaries.

Czech Singers, visitors were greeted with the song, “Písnisicka Ceská” (Our Czech Song). After a brief program, they then enjoyed a tour of the TCHCC facilities, which included the Belfry, the Migl House, Amphitheatre, and the Pavilion.

After the tour, all attendees gathered at the Pavilion where the Po.L.K of A. (Polka Lovers Klub of America) dance performers enter-

tained them. The group danced a few numbers to the music of Chris Rybak and enjoyed kolaches and refreshments. Willie and Joyce Bohuslav, TCHCC volunteers, coordinated the welcoming party.

Miroslav Konvalina interviewed many of those present as he prepared for a live broadcast through Radio Prague for that evening. Earlier in the day, Ray and Clarice Snokhous

drove Mirek to Praha to interview Father Hybner, who conducted a tour of the church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary and the Memorial Chapel to WWII veterans that is located on the church grounds.
