According to the most recent studies from the U.S. Census Bureau, there are 66.3 million fathers in the United States. Of these, nearly 26 million live with children under the age of 18. Among these: • two in 10 are raising three or more children.

• one in 10 is raising an infant under age one.

• one in eight is under 30.

• four in 10 are 55 or older.

In addition, the Census Bureau reported that 60 percent of children under six regularly eat dinner with their fathers; 24 percent of the same age group regularly eat breakfast together. And, 88 percent of children under six are praised by their fathers at least once a day.

Happy Father’s Day! Here’s a salute to our fathers: F – stands for Father; a friend who is strong and whose love will protect me and keep me from wrong.

A – is for always I’ll love my Father dearly, and when he is old, by his side I’ll be near.

T – begins tasks that Father has done; through love and true kindness for me, his number one.

H – is for happy; and when Father is near, I’m happy - for I’ve nothing to fear.

E – is for every glad day I’ll speak kindly of my Father, at work or at play.

R – begins roses; the red, white, and pink; they each show my Father that of him, now I think.

– Author Unknown Lian’s in Europe Lodge 107, Floresville Youth Club member Lian Pruski left on June 5 for a 15-day tour of London, Paris, Switzerland, and Italy with other students. She will experience some of the most picturesque destinations that Europe has to offer. Lian will return home on Sunday, June 19.

Volunteers Needed RVOS and SPJST are working together to host the Texas Classic Barbecue Cook-Off and Car Show with a horseshoe tournament, food, music, and family activities on Friday and Saturday, June 24 and 25 in Bruceville-Eddy. Lodges are encouraged to sponsor barbecue teams to come and enjoy the fun.

Lodges and youth clubs are also encouraged to set up fund raising booths at the event on Saturday.

And, judges for the car show and barbecue cook-off are needed. If you are interested in judging, please contact either Supreme Lodge Vice President Gene McBride or myself at (800) 727-7578; or Richard Hykel at RVOS (254) 773-2181, ext. 206.

Family fun planned at June 24-25 Texas Classic in Bruceville-Eddy Two Temple-based statewide organizations are teaming up for Children’s Miracle Network. RVOS and SPJST will host the Texas Classic in Bruceville-Eddy on June 24 and 25, and the weekend will be filled with barbecue, classic cars, horseshoes, and children’s activities. BrucevilleEddy is located between Temple and Waco off I-35 at Exit 315. All proceeds from the weekend will benefit CMN. The event kicks off Friday evening with music by country band Lost Wolf from 8 p.m. to 12 midnight.

Food and soft drinks will be available.

Barbecue Cook-Off The Texas Classic Barbecue Cook-Off features more than $5,000 in prize money and trophies for the top 10 places in brisket, spare ribs, and chicken categories. The entry fee is $75 for one or all categories. Another cook-off category is jackpot pinto beans with 80 percent payback and trophies awarded for first, second, and third places. The entry fee for the beans competition is $10. The barbecue cook-off will be held on the Bruceville-Eddy CookOff Grounds. Limited electricity and water is available to cookers. Cookoff awards will be presented at 5 p.m. on Saturday.

Car Show On Saturday, the Texas Classic Car Show will feature 27 judged classes of cars including pre-1948, street rods, Chevrolets, Corvettes, Camaros, Chevelles, Ford Mustangs, Thuderbirds, Mopar, Pontiac, Volkswagen, other GM, foreign, trucks, 4 x 4s, vans/SUVs, and open.

First, second, and third place trophies will be awarded in each of the classes.

In addition, the top three driver’s choice, the top three people’s choice, and the best of show will be awarded large trophies. A club participation award will be presented to the car club with the most participation.

The entry fee for a vehicle is $20 prior to June 15, and $25 after June

15. The fee includes a tee-shirt and door prize registration. Car show registration is from 10 a.m. to 12 noon, and awards will be presented at 4 p.m.

The show will take place on a paved parking area at Bruceville-Eddy ISD. Horseshoe Tournament The Texas Classic Horseshoe Tournament begins at 12 noon on Saturday. The entry fee is $10 per team in the double elimination tourn a m e n t .

Registration is at 11 a.m., and trophies and prizes will be awarded for first through third places.

Other Saturday Activities The band MuddCatts will play from 12 noon until 4 p.m. on Saturday, and attendees will have an opportunity to climb a 40-foot rock throughout the day.

Other activities will include a silent auction and door prize drawings throughout the day on Saturday.

Children’s activities will include face painting and balloon twisting from 12 noon to 3 p.m.

Vendors will be offering food, soft drinks, crafts, etc. Vendor spaces are available for $25 each.

SPJST records 1,277 applications written through May in Challenge 2005 campaign Through the end of May, the SPJST received 1,277 applications for insurance and annuity certificates. The goal of the Challenge 2005 membership drive is to write at least 2,640 applications.

In conjunction with SPJST’s Challenge 2005 program, local lodges have been assigned application quotas for the year. The lodge quota has been based largely on past performance and perceived potential.

The fourth column, “Youth Club Quota,” applies to those lodges with youth clubs and reflects applications written for members between the ages of 0 and 17. “Youth Club” totals are applied toward the lodge’s total quota.

The sixth column, “Lodge Incentive Count,” reflects the number of new certificates issued for the Lodge Recognition and Incentive Program.

Lodge Letters Section District Two plans camp reunion Dear Members, It has always been my dream to get all of the campers and chaperones that have attended District Two Camp together since I became DYC in 1989. So, we are planning a reunion of all past District Two campers and chaperones who attended District Two Camp between the years of 1989 through the present.

The reunion will be Sunday, July 17 at Camp Val Verde in McGregor. All past campers and chaperones and their immediate families are invited.

The event is tentatively planned to start around noon with a picnic lunch on July 17.

Lodge 6 Cottonwood plans July 17 picnic Hi! In the absence of our President, Brother Johnnie Krizan, First Vice President Ray Perez called the meeting to order on Sunday, June 5, 2005, at 2:30 p.m.

Brother Perez called upon Secretary Sister Barbara Jean Hykel for the reading of the minutes from our last meeting. The minutes were approved as read. There was no correspondence.

Sister Peggy Dobecka, Treasurer, gave her report. It was approved as given.

At this time, Evelyn and Jimmy Stuckly were recognized and thanked

for the two new flags for the hall.

Our hall has had some remodeling done, and it is looking very nice.

Now, we also have two new flags, which were needed. Again, thanks to Evelyn and Jimmy for their donation of our flags.

Brother Ray called upon Sister Peggy for the youth report. She reported that the youth had attended the LIT camp and Sokol Slet in Houston and were probably home resting. Sister Peggy thanked the youth and adults for their Join Hands Day projects. They cleared debris from around the hall and planted trees.

Sister Peggy also reported that the canned goods collected last month were delivered to the post office in Bellmead. She mentioned that YAD was coming up on June 26 at Lodge 84, Dallas. The youth will host their meeting on June 10 at 7 p.m. at the West Station Steakhouse this month.

They will also be celebrating Brad Dulock’s graduation party.

prize drawing at our upcoming picnic on July 17. It was also mentioned that all donations would be welcomed for the picnic and prize drawing.

Brother George Straten, Financial Secretary and Hall Manager, gave his report of no new members for May. He shared thank you cards from the West League Booster Club and the West Volunteer Fire Department in regard to our charitable contribution to them.

Brother George also reported the hall bookings. July 1 and 15 are socials at the hall at 6:30 p.m. July 16 is work day for the picnic. July 17 is our 108th annual picnic. Our next social in June will be on the 17th, with our next meeting on July 3.

Brother Ray called upon Brother Milton Peterson for the trustee's report. He reported discussing the picnic, which all was in order. Prize drawing tickets are now available for sale at $1 each or 6 for $5. He also mentioned that all hall bookings have a contract to be signed by the parties wanting to rent the hall.

A committee was appointed to work up a contract to be used. The committee consisted of Brothers George Straten and Ernest Bezdek and Sister Peggy Dobecka. Brother Milton also mentioned that the books needed auditing, and there were two audit committee members that needed replacing.

Sunshine Committee, Sister Jerelene Lenart, gave her report. She reported sending get well cards to Brothers Robert Dobecka, Otto Hanak, Eldon Pavelka, Tye Williams, and Joe Lenart. Sympathy cards were sent to Erline Husak, Martha Broz, and Pat Dieterich. Sister Jerelene read a thank you card from Pat Dieterich upon the death of Myrtle Long Taylor. Our deepest sympathy to all these families.

She said “Happy Father’s Day” to all fathers. She and some others from our lodge went to the SPJST Fraternal Flight School in Burleson. She reported that May 14 was the State Horseshoe Tournament in Waco and the second place winners were Tim and Buster Russell from Lodge 6, Cottonwood. Congratulations, guys!

Day, and everyone is invited to the celebration at the SPJST Home Office in Temple. Sister Barbara also mentioned the RVOS and SPJST Classic Car Show on June 25. The State Golf Tournament is set for Saturday, August 13 in Salado, Texas.

It was noted that our lodge is now a “no smoking” facility. The hall now displays signs that are posted in various places throughout the hall. It was also voted on to donate a $50 item for the auction at the Gladys Yates Scholarship Fund Raiser on June 12.

Progressive door prizes were drawn, and the winners were Helen Zapalac and Georgia Wachsmann, not present. The youth distributed tins of peanut brittle to all fathers today.

SPJST participates in National Polka Festival Even the rainy weather could not dampen the spirits of the participants, sightseers, and dancers at the 2005 National Polka Festival in Ennis.

The three-day festival concluded late Sunday evening, May 29, 2005, with another great performance by the Grammy Award-winning band, Brave Combo from Denton, Texas.

Once again, the SPJST Float took top honors in the commercial class.

Chairman of the Board George Pauling reported that the board met today at 1:30 p.m. and had Secretary of the Board Sister Darlene Engelke read the minutes of that meeting.

Brother George Pauling also reminded everyone of the benefit which will be held in honor of deceased State FAC Gladys Yates on June 12. It begins at 11 a.m. with a barbecue dinner, auction, and dance. Tickets are $10 to get you in the door and for the meal as well.

FAC Sister Mary Alice Langlotz reported that she received her monthly letter from State FAC Michael Morris. She also read a poem about mothers. She also reported that Lodge 66 had three teams in the horseshoe tournament. George Pauling and Woody Richards won third place. Dana McAdams and her daughter, Brandi Johnson, and Michael and Weldon Galler also participated.

Lodge 84, Dallas honors 50-year members Dear Members, President Yeager called our monthly meeting to order and asked for a motion to postpone the reading of the April minutes and the treasurer’s report to our June 20 meeting.

The motion passed.

She thanked everyone who contributed to the chicken dinner — side dishes and/or pastry, which were delicious! She also thanked the 50-year members for coming and the new members present for the initiation ceremony that she performed after the meeting. We thank you, President

Through their hard work as well as Brother Doug Yeager, who was unable to come, we were able to be counted among other gold award winners in 2004.

Our Fraternalist of the Year for Lodge 84 is Financial Secretary Brother Jim Liska was present to accept the award and be presented a monetary gift which he promptly donated back to the lodge. Youth Leader Bessie Petr reported the youth club will hold its meeting May 25 to elect officers and practice the beseda.

In closing, the members congratulate the 2005 graduates and wish them much luck in their future plans.

A beautiful handmade quilt and pillows were donated to the prize drawing by Margie Anders. Several requests for one of Margie’s famous pecan pies were noted, too. Other donations included an electric grill from Helen Hegwood and thermal mug and coaster from Carolyn Fillip.

Special thanks to E. J. Bender for arranging the performance of the Houston Fire Department’s Pipes and Drums. This group represents the Houston Fire Department at two national events each year and performs for local events. Six bagpipers and one drummer made beautiful music for us.

It is important to me that each of you knows how much I appreciate your time and energy spent in support of Lodge 88. As you read this message, J. R. and I will be on vacation in Alaska. Lodge 191, Lufkin sets June 18 dance Thanks to our hosts for our May dance—the East Texas Cloggers. As usual, they put on quite a show. All members of the armed forces—past and present—were recognized and honored during the first break. Our thanks to each of you who served our country in the time of need. Dance music was provided by Free Country.

Thanks to the Cloggers and Free Country for the night of entertainment.

Lodge 202 Jourdanton members enjoy picnic Lodge 202, Jourdanton members and guests gathered for a picnic on June 5, 2005, at the Pleasanton

Country Club with 52 present.

Swimming, making crafts, playing games, and visiting were enjoyed.

Jeff Barta, Evan Barta, and Joe Huizar did a wonderful job grilling hamburgers and hot dogs. Youth and adults brought mouth-watering desserts and assisted FAC Mary Ann Barta with serving the food.

Adult Lodge President Jeff Barta installed the youth club officers.

Youth Leader Brenda Gonzales presented certificates and prizes to several youth. Assistant DYC Belenda Barta talked about district camp and encouraged the youth to attend.

She will begin residency in Anesthesia at the UT Health Science Center in San Antonio this summer.

S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home No. 1, Taylor hosts fishing tournament On May 12 and 13, 2005, S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home No. 1 in Taylor hosted its Third Annual Fishing Tournament. A large tank containing 500 pounds of catfish was set on the beautiful grounds of the facility.

Residents of the nursing and assisted living facilities, their families, staff members, sponsors, and friends enjoyed fishing and fellowship from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. each day. In addition to the fishing, there was music and singing provided by Winston Anderson, Ervin Heselmeyer, A.P. Patschke, and Pat Hornsby on Thursday and Leroy’s Band on Friday.

On Thursday, a delicious barbecue meal that included ribs, sausage, and all the trimmings was donated by Taylor Meat Company, was served.

On Friday, fresh catfish from the tank

was cleaned, fried, and served to the residents that evening. In addition, there were plenty of sodas, tea, lemonade, water, and snacks available to all fishermen for their refreshment and enjoyment.

Many fish were caught, and many fish stories were told during these two days. In Memoriam Expression of Sympathy We, the Resolution Committee of Lodge 17, Novy Tabor on behalf of our entire membership, wish to express our deepest sympathy to the family of our departed lodge brother, THEODORE F. DUSEK, age 85, who passed away on Wednesday, March 16, 2005, in St. Joseph Regional Health Center in Bryan, Texas.

Brother Dusek was born September 4, 1919, in the New Tabor Community of Burleson County, Texas, to Frank V. and Rosie (Trcalek) Dusek. He was baptized and confirmed in the New Tabor Brethren Church. He attended Union School and Caldwell High School.

Mr. Dusek was a farmer and rancher.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, serving in the 4th Armored Division in Europe. Mr. Dusek received the distinguished Purple Heart and several Battle Stars during his service to his country. Mr. Dusek was a lifetime member of the 4th Armored Division. He was also an active member of the VFW Post 4458 Caldwell, the American Legion and the Disabled American Veterans.

He enjoyed his work with the Burleson County Fair Association, was active with the Burleson County Farm Bureau, RVOS Lodge 9, was an honorary member of the Caldwell FFA and served as a Democratic Election Judge for many years.

Brother Dusek was a loyal member of SPJST Lodge 17, New Tabor, where he served on the auditing committee until his death. He was also a lodge trustee. Mr. Dusek was selected Outstanding Male Senior Citizen of Burleson County in 1986.

Survivors include his wife of 52 years, Joyce Nowak Dusek; son Theodore Dusek, Jr. of Caldwell; son and daughter-in-law, Dick and Angela Dusek of Bryan; four grandchildren, Andrew and Jacqueline Dusek of Bryan and Grace and Grant Dusek of Caldwell; brothers, Jerry Dusek of of Bryan and Dan Dusek of Tyler; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, March 19 in Strickland Funeral Home in Caldwell, with the Reverend Henry Beseda and Reverend John Baletka officiating. Burial followed in Slovak Cemetery.

Pallbearers were George Cox, Edward Homeyer, Paris Gibbs, Edwin Hlavaty, Lawrence Vavra, and Andrew Loehr.

Memorials may be given to the charity of donor’s choice.

In Memory of Hubert Feuerbacher On May 28, 2005, Hubert Feuerbacher passed peacefully from this life to the next with his family by his side.

He was born September 24, 1919, to Edmund and Ida Sternberg Feuerbacher in Rogers Ranch H. Feuerbacher near Mendoza, Texas. He was baptized at Trinity Lutheran Church in Austin and was a member of Grace Lutheran Church in Elgin, Texas.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, June 1 at 2 p.m. at the Elgin Funeral Home in Elgin.

Visitation was Tuesday from 5 to 7 p.m.

Mr. Feuerbacher is survived lovingly by daughter Judy Wilke of Elgin; granddaughters, Jamie Wilke Calvert and husband Eric and Jo Marie Wilke, all of Houston; sisterin-law and brother-in-law, Elna and Jack Poe; brother-in-law, Cliff Braune; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his wife of 55 years, Ruby Tonn Feuerbacher; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ed Feuerbacher; brother, Carl Feuerbacher; and sisters, Lena Magee, Zelda Wagner, Leona Dressen, Carrie Mareth, and Dorothy Braune.

Hubert lived his entire life in the central Texas area moving to Austin from Creedmore at age 16 in order to

work. He married Ruby on February 25, 1940. In 1949, they moved to the outskirts of Manor where they lived until 1983 when they retired to Elgin.

Hubert was a self-made and selfeducated man who began working at a very young age doing various chores on the farm. At age 16, he began working in Austin as an electrician. He began work as a journeyman electrician for O.H. Cummins Electric where he worked for many years. His employment as an electrician spanned over 60 years doing mostly commercial work. He was very proud of the jobs he completed as foreman of many University of Texas buildings including Jester Hall, LBJ Library, the Geology building, and others. Besides his work as an electrician, he also farmed, ranched, and bought/sold farm land.

Although he was a very practical man, he had a very kind and gentle heart. He would help anyone who needed it and made many donations to the community. He was kind and generous to his daughter and granddaughters, providing them with not only a wonderful lifestyle, but with unconditional love. He was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather.

Dancing was Hubert and Ruby’s passion. They met at Uhland Dance Hall and continued dancing throughout their entire lives. Until recently, Hubert was still enjoying the dances at the Shoal Creek Senior Citizen Center and the Elgin SPJST Hall.

Hubert truly lived his life as a dance.

Membership included serving on the Manor School Board for nine years from 1953 to 1964, the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 520 for over 60 years, and SPJST Lodge 18, Elgin.

Pallbearers were his nephews, Hap Feuerbacher, Dr. Bill Mareth, Dr. Tom Mareth, Robert Poe, John Tonn, Cliff Braune, Ernest Maschmeyer, and Jarrell Wilke.

In Memory of Angeline Kristinek Angeline Pavlica Kristinek, 94, passed away Thursday, May 19, 2005, after a lengthy illness.

Rosary was on Sunday, May 22 at Resthaven Chapel with Deacon Dick McCann officiating. Mass was celebrated on A. Kristinek Monday, May 23 at 2 p.m. at St. Elizabeth’s Catholic Church with Father Jim O’Conner officiating. Deacon McCann assisted at the Mass. John and Jean Kveton did the readings. The grandchildren shared stories, and the great-grandchildren led the Lord’s Prayer.

Angeline was born on December 16, 1910, in Bell County to John and Anna Bartek Pavlica. She married Ernest Frank Kristinek on October 31, 1929, in Temple at St. Mary’s Catholic Church by Father P. J. O’Riley. They were married 75 years last fall. They moved to the South Plains in 1935, near Littlefield and then near Pep. They settled in Lubbock County in 1951.

Angeline was an active member of SPJST Lodge 157, Lubbock. She served as the secretary, sales representative, and youth leader for many years. She also served on the state publication committee, attended most state conventions as well as district meetings.

She was also involved in ABWA, Farm Bureau, and the Liberty CoopGin. She played an integral role in the family cotton farming operations. She always had a garden and canned up until the last few years.

She was also known on the South Plains for her kolaches. She shared them with many people over the years.

Her greatest pride and joy were her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Walter, Janet, and Jason all graduated from Texas Tech University. Stan and Jennifer graduated from Texas A&M University.

She attended many ball games and stock shows for almost 40 years. She rarely missed sporting events in which her grandchildren or greatgrandchildren participated.

She is preceded in death by her parents; husband; and sisters, Emily Mikeska Stuteville, Agnes DePalma, and Della Boster.

She is survived by her children, Ernest, Jr. and Fredda Kristinek of

Whitharral and Jerome and Cyndy Kristinek of Lubbock; grandchildren Walter and Carla Kristinek of Whitharral, Janet Kristinek of Levelland, Stan Kristinek of Whitharral, Jennifer Kristinek of Amarillo, and Jason Kristinek of Lubbock; and great-grandchildren, Will and Jamie Kristinek of Lubbock, Josh Kristinek of Whitharral, and Scott Kristinek of Whitharral; brother, Johnny Pavlica of Victoria; sister, Ruby Bolton of Temple, sister-in-law, Miladie Kristinek of Temple; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Pallbearers were the grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Resolution of Sympathy We, the members of Lodge 142, Houston, wish to express our deepest and sincerest sympathy to the family of our departed brother, HENRY J. LINHART. Funeral services for Henry J. Linhart, age 86, of Richmond were held at 10 a.m., Friday, May 20, 2005, at Davis-Greenlawn Funeral Chapel in Rosenberg. Interment followed in West Gethsemane Cemetery in Rosenberg. Visitation was held from 5 to 9 p.m. with a rosary recited at 7:30 p.m., Thursday, May 19 at Davis-Greenlawn Funeral Chapel.

Henry was born May 6, 1919, in Praha to Joseph and Amalia Sbrusch Linhart. He served in the U.S. Army from 1942 to 1945 in Normandy, Northern France, Aredennes, Rhineland, and Central Europe. He was awarded the EAME Campaign Medal with five Bronze Stars, Good Conduct Medal, American Theatre Campaign Medal, Victory Medal, and three Overseas Service Bars.

He was a member and past president of SPJST Lodge 142, Houston and a member of American Legion Post No. 271, and VFW Post No. 3903. He was also a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Richmond. He retired from Graver Tank and Manufacturing.

Henry passed away May 15 in Richmond.

Henry is preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Amalia Linhart; and brothers, Albert and Herbert.

He is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Millie Kusy Linhart of Richmond; sons, Henry G. Linhart and wife Doris of Pasadena, and John Linhart and wife Kathy of Houston, brothers, Leo Linhart of Houston Daniel Linhart of El Campo and Alvin Linhart of Sugar Land; sister Hilda Dieringer of Wharton; grandchildren, Henry G. Linhart, Jr. and wife Katie of Wylie, Melissa Linhart Swint and husband Galen of Atlanta, Georgia, Jennifer Linhart Smith and husband Jason of Houston, and David Linhart of Houston; along with other relatives and many friends.

In Memory of Ed Martinka PeeWee Martinka was born Edwin J. Martinka in Taiton, Texas, on October 15, 1930, and departed this life early Thursday, May 26, 2005, at a Baytown hospital at the age of 74 years.

He served in the U.S. Army E. Martinka 511th Airborne Signal Corp during the Korean Conflict. On June 11, 1952, he married his sweetheart, Bettie Sexton of Baytown. After working for a number of years for the Carnation Milk Company in Baytown, he established PeeWee Grocery and Bar-B-Que on North Main which his family operated until the mid 1980s. He enjoyed coaching and umpiring softball, working in his garden, and watching television, especially sports of all kinds.

PeeWee was a lifelong member of the SPJST Lodge 156, Baytown and sold insurance for SPJST. He is preceded in death by his parents, John P. and Emma Vojacek Martinka, and brother, George Martinka.

PeeWee was a good and caring husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend who never met a stranger.

Youth Letters Section District Two plans camp reunion Dear Members, It has always been my dream to get all of the campers and chaperones that have attended District Two Camp together since I became DYC in 1989. So, we are planning a reunion of all past District Two campers and chaperones who attended District Two Camp between the years of 1989 through the present.

The reunion will be Sunday, July 17 at Camp Val Verde in McGregor. All past campers and chaperones and their immediate families are invited.

The event is tentatively planned to start around noon with a picnic lunch on July 17.

Lodge 9, Snook youth practices beseda Dear Readers, At least twice a week, kids from Lodge 9, Snook have been practicing the beseda dance. We have fun learning and practicing. Even if all the kids are not there, we find a way to make the circles work. This is the first time Snook has done the beseda dance, and we plan to keep doing this dance for many more years.

Lodge 17 New Tabor Youth Club reports on May meeting Dear Vestnik Readers, The June 5, 2005, meeting of SPJST Lodge 17, New Tabor Youth Club was called to order at 3:20 p.m.

by President Lacy Jones. Logan Jones led us in the Pledge of Allegiance, and Tyler Sander led us in the SPJST Youth Club Motto.

Treasurer Kyle Skrabanek gave the treasurer’s report.

Youth Leader Susan Skrabanek spoke about our youth group’s trip to Schlitterbaun, camp forms, the July youth club meeting, new rules for YAD, and the scrapbook.

All of the youth members enjoyed having cookies and Capri Suns for snacks. Brittanie Gaas and Kyle Skrabanek provided the refreshments.

Nick and Colby Havemann brought door prizes. The door prizes were won by Kayla Brinkman, Nathan Blum, Kolby Kalden,

President Jon Marcaurele called the meeting to order, and members recited the Pledge of Allegiance, SPJST Motto, and prayer.

Secretary Stephanie Fucik called roll and read the minutes from the April meeting.

Under old business, Mrs. Bubela discussed LIT retreat at Camp Val Verde from June 3 to 5, and she attended the youth leaders retreat at Camp Lone Star.

We then presented Jon with our farewell notes and enjoyed hamburgers, cake and drinks.

LEEANN SIMPSON MORGAN SIMPSON Lodge 17, New Tabor Youth Club welcomes new member, Morgan Simpson. Morgan is the seven-year-old daughter of Terri Graham. Her sisters are LeeAnn Simpson and Courtney Sebesta. She likes to swim and go to 4-H meetings.

She will be a second grader at Caldwell Elementary. She plays softball and is a 4-H member.

Lodge 17, New Tabor welcomes new member, LeeAnn Simpson. LeeAnn is the 12year-old daughter of Terri Graham. She has two sisters, Courtney Sebesta and Morgan Simpson. LeeAnn enjoys swimming, photography, singing, dancing and playing softball and basketball.

She attends Caldwell Middle School and will be in the seventh grade. She is also active in the 4-H, CMS Band, GT classes and her church.

Lodge 17, New Tabor Youth Club welcomes new member, Courtney Sebesta, age eight.

She is the daughter of Terri Graham and Bubba Sebesta.

Her sisters are LeeAnn and Morgan Simpson. Courtney was active in the Lodge 9, Snook Youth Club, but is transferring her membership to Lodge 17. Courtney likes to go swimming and to ride bikes.

She also likes to sew.

She attends Caldwell Intermediate school and will be in the fourth grade. She is involved in the 4-H , GT, plays softball and is active in her church.

Lodge 84, Dallas Junior Youth Club reports on May meeting Dear Readers, The Lodge 84, Dallas Junior Youth Club held its monthly meeting, social and craft time on Sunday May 22, 2005.

Ashley Andreason brought the meeting to order, and Nicole Oberle led the Pledge of Allegiance.

Minutes from last month’s meeting were read, and the sunshine person and treasurer gave their reports.

Also, we discussed old and new business.

A group talent practice was held before the meeting, and we dined on hamburgers and drinks from McDonald’s afterwards. We made turtle refrigerator magnets as a craft.

Lodge 160 San Angelo youth enjoys June meeting Dear Readers, We had a meeting on June 2, 2005, at St. Ambrose meeting room.

During the meeting, we had pizza, watermelon, and drinks. We played board games, ping-pong, and other games. We also did our poster “Soaring to New Heights” and our scrapbook.

Patrick, our president, led us in the meeting. We talked about our skit for YAD, and the tree we planted for Stanley Broz at Lowake Community Center. We had a great June meeting.

It was lots of fun!

Lodge 202 Jourdanton Youth Club begins summer with picnic Hello, SPJST Members.

On June 5, 2005, Lodge 202, Jourdanton got together for a picnic.

Our picnic was held this year at the Pleasanton Country Club. The adult lodge provided the hamburgers and hot dogs, and the youth club provided desserts and other side dishes.

We enjoyed swimming, playing bingo, and doing a craft for camp.

YAD cards and camp applications were turned in. New members received a “new member certificate,” and members who referred others that signed up, were also given “certificates of appreciation”.

For Father’s Day, the dads chose a candy bar from a box. The candy bar had a special coupon attached to it.

The coupons had a service the kids would do for them for Father’s Day—either breakfast in bed, lawn service, or a car wash.

Youth club officers were installed and our assistant DYC spoke about LIT camp. Youth club officers for the 2005-2006 year are:

Lodge 202 Jourdanton youth enjoys picnic Hi, SPJST Members!

Our lodge had a picnic on June 5.

The youth club went swimming, played bingo, and made a craft. It was a camp journal for pictures and to write things in. It was nice to win a prize at bingo. I had fun playing with my friends, and it was a good lunch. Thank you, adult lodge and youth club members.

odge 160, San Angelo Youth Club bought, donated, and planted a tree, Chitalpa tashkentensis, in loving memory of District Four Director Stanley Broz. We drove to Lowake, Texas, on May 13, 2005, and Stanley Broz planted the tree at the Lowake Community Center with the help of Mitchell Hirt, Johnnie Schwartz, and Martha Broz’s tractor.

Czech Cultural Center Houston presents musical evening The Czech Cultural Center Houston is honored to present an enchanting musical evening concert

15.cerven 2005 on Wednesday, June 15, 2005, at 7 p.m. in Prague Hall at the Czech Cultural Center Houston. The concert will feature award-winning Czech Bassoonist Vaclav Vonasek, International Opera Singer Germanborn Sonja Bruzauskas, and widely known Texas pianist Rick Rowley.

The event, which benefits the Czech Cultural Center Houston, located at 4920 San Jacinto (in the Museum District) Houston, Texas 77004, is open to the public.

Artist Bios Bassoonist Vaclav Vonasek is Czech and was born in 1980 in Blatna, in Southern Bohemia. He graduated in 1999 from the Pilsen Conservatoire after studying with Ladislav Smidl and Matous Krivacek. He performed as soloist with the Conservatoire Symphony Orchestra and the Symphony Orchestra of Marianske Lazne. Since 1999, Vaclav has studied at the Prague Academy of Music, with Professors Frantisek Herman and Jiri Seidl.

In November, 2001 he performed as a member of the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra under Vladimir Ashkenazy during the orchestra’s concert tour of the Far East. His victory in the Czech-Slovak competition “Talent of the Year 2003” earned him a yearlong visiting scholarship at the Royal College of Music in London, where he studied with Andrea de Flammineis and Martin Gatt. He won second prize at the 2002 Prague Spring International Competition, along with a prize awarded in the same contest by the Czech Music Fund, for the best performance of a contemporary Czech piece. In May, 2003, he was selected as finalist in the Young Concert Artists Trust competition in London. In July, 2004, Vonasek won first prize at the Gillet-Fox Bassoon Competition (sponsored by the International Double Reed Society) which took place in Melbourne, Australia, and subsequently is invited to the University of Texas at Austin June 4 to 8, 2005, to perform and participate in the annual convention, in addition to his American debut at the Czech Cultural Center Houston in Prague Hall in Houston, Texas on June 15, 2005.

Pianist Rick Rowley is a versatile Texas musician appearing extensively as recitalist, concerto soloist and chamber performer with the world’s leading musicians.

Vera Stanek — Life for Dreams Vera Stanek was born in Czechoslovakia, in the capital of Moravia Brno, five months before Hitler occupied the country. She experienced the hard times of war with lack of food and heating, fear of bombing, diseases and finally, the liberation by Soviet Army.

Three years of freedom followed.

Then, the Communist took over in a coup and that was the beginning of socialism. She witnessed all the changes in society, the nationalization of industry, the confiscation of private businesses, and the communist propaganda. As a daughter of a non-communist father, she struggled to go through high school, later university. After she met her husband Frank, the couple decided to escape.

But the attempt was unsuccessful, thanks to the written statement to the police by Vera’s own sister. So Vera and her family stayed closed behind the Iron Curtain for another 15 years.

Finally, they escaped to Switzerland at the age when other people think about their retirement—Vera’s husband was 51 years old and Vera was the dual role of conductor/soloist; his performances of Mozart concertos have been particularly recognized. He has also taken part in concerts on period instruments, performing as harpsichordist with the Texas Bach Aria Group and on fortepiano with the Texas Baroque Ensemble. He serves as faculty member at the University of Texas in Austin and works with pianists, vocalists and chamber music groups. He was the music lecturer/performer for the prestigious Houston Series for three years and his programs were among the most popular in the Series’ history. Mr. Rowley has recorded, produced and written liner notes for a number of compact discs; his solo recordings feature repertoire by Liszt, Guion, Chopin, Mompou, Granados, Barber, Gershwin, Cumming and Copland. He has recorded chamber music with cellist Peter Rejto; flutist Marianne Gedigian; and clarinetist Patricia Shands. Recently, he contributed performances to new discs of music by American composers Kathryn Mishell and Kent Kennan. A CD of songs by Strauss, Turina, Smith and Ward with soprano, Cheryl Parrish, is in current release. Mr. Rowley in theater is a veteran of nearly 50 productions as actor, musical director and

only few years younger. The couple had $50 in their pocket and nothing more.

In Switzerland, Vera and Frank worked and lived for another 14 years until they took the opportunity and went work to Beijing, China. After spending one unforgettable year there, they used the waiting time for the green card to come to America for another year of traveling through Asia, Australia and Europe.

On January 10, 1999, Vera Stanek and her husband came to the United States. They now live in Lago Vista, Texas, about 30 miles from Austin. On September 27, 2004, they became American citizens.

Vera Stanek: Life for Dreams Vera Stanek’s book is a modern odyssey of a woman and her family following dreams about freedom, director. His first performances were for children’s theater at Zachary Scott in Austin and he has also worked for several theaters in Houston, the Point Theater in Ingram and the remarkable Unity Theatre in Brenham. He made his directorial debut with a production of “The Belle of Amherst” for the Unity Theater where he also directed a new play based on letters of George Sand and Gustave Flaubert. He was the sound designer and composer for songs and incidental music for a play based on “The Firebird” legend for Stages Theater in Houston. He most recently appeared in a highly praised performance as Frank in Brian Friel’s “Molly Sweeney”.

Vocalist Sonja Bruzauskas received her undergraduate degree in Voice, Acting and Dance (Musical Theatre) from the Folkwang Hochschule Essen in Germany near where she was born and raised. Sonja came to the United States with a Rotary scholarship that enabled her to pursue and finish her Master of Music in Voice (Opera) at Manhattan School of Music in New York City. After a year as a soloist with the “Opera Metropolitana de Monterrey” in Mexico, Sonja moved back to Germany,

Vera Stanek and her husband never give up on their dreams. life does not defeat them and they prove that regardless of age, the human she sang “Hansel” in “Hansel und Gretel” with the Nordharzer Staedtebundtheater in Halberstadt and was soon hired as a soloist by the “Staatsoperette Dresden”. There, she performed roles such as “Rosina” in “The Barber of Seville”, “Nancy” in “Martha”, “Eliza” in “My Fair Lady”, “Anita” in “West Side Story”, “Orlofsky” in “Die Fledermaus” and many more. Last summer, Sonja was an apprentice artist with the Santa Fe Opera, where she performed the role of the maidservant in Verdi’s Simon Boccanegra and covered the role of Beatrice in Berlioz‚ Beatrice and Benedict.

Besides Opera and theatre, Sonja is also an active and passionate recitalist and oratorio singer. She has sung the Alto solos in works by Bach, Handel, Mozart, Beethoven, Prokofiev, Faure and Durufle.

Sonja most recently performed the role of “Ismael” in A. Scarlattis “Agar e Ismaele” with Houston’s Ary Lyrica orchestra as well as the role of “Pedrillo” in Telemann’s “Don Quixote” with Mercury Baroque.

Sonja makes her home in Houston, Texas.
