This week the Supreme Lodge is meeting at the Home Office. Many of us present reports to the officers and directors each quarter. One of the items in my report outlines the Vestniks that were published during the quarter. This details the date of the Vestnik, the number of pages, the circulation number, and the number of photos. My favorite part of that is the photos. I like photos—imagine that!

In the past quarter, the Vestnik has printed 1,275 photos. That is awesome. Thanks to everyone who sends photos to the Vestnik. I love seeing all of the wonderful things you are doing to promote SPJST in your lodges and communities. Keep them coming!

Congratulations, Districts Congratulations to Districts One, Four, Six, and Seven for already making their insurance quotas in Challenge 2005. That’s super—we are proud of you! Challenge 2005, this year’s membership campaign, is moving right along. At the end of June, our dynamic team of sales representatives have written 1,522 applications. We are only 978 applications away from meeting the Challenge of 2,500 applications written. Working together, we will achieve this goal and make it five years in a row that SPJST has exceeded its goals.

Also, if your name is not listed on page 5, how about completing a

recruiter card and recommending someone for membership in SPJST? These cards are available from lodge officers, sales representatives, district or state officials. SPJST Introduces Five-Year Annuity Pay it now or pay it later is a saying often heard when referring to investment options. However, sometimes paying later can be beneficial when comparing different investment products.

Take, for example, a comparison of a certificate of deposit versus an annuity.

With a certificate of deposit, the taxes on interest earned must be paid each year. With an annuity, the interest is tax-deferred until withdrawals are made.

Here’s a comparison of an annuity versus certificate of deposit based on an age 35 individual, five percent return, 33 percent tax bracket, and a single deposit of $100,000:

As you can see, there’s a definite advantage to choosing an annuity with its tax-deferred status. Now let’s see how SPJST can use its Five-Year Annuity to build funds for such things as retirement.

Features of the SPJST Five-Year Annuity The Five-Year Annuity is a single premium deferred annuity with a five year interest guarantee. The minimum single premium is $10,000 and current interest rates are offered based on three premium band amounts: Band 1—$10,000 to $24,999 Current Interest Rate: 3.95 percent

Band 2—$25,000 to $49,999 Current Interest Rate: 4.10 percent

Band 3—$50,000 and up Current Interest Rate: 4.20 percent Please note current interest rates are subject to change without notice. The minimum guaranteed interest rate is 2 percent. When purchased, current interest rates are guaranteed for 5 years.

How do I renew after five years?

At the end of the first five years, SPJST will send you a letter notifying you of two options: a) renew at the new five-year interest rate as of the renewal date; or b) annuitize.

If you do not return the letter and indicate your option within a specified time period, SPJST will renew your annuity for another five-year period at the interest rate available at that time.

SPJST records 1,522 applications written through June in Challenge 2005 campaign Through the end of June, the SPJST received 1,522 applications for insurance and annuity certificates. The goal of the Challenge 2005 membership drive is to write at least 2,500 applications.

In conjunction with SPJST’s Challenge 2005 program, local lodges have been assigned application quotas for the year. The lodge quota has been based largely on past performance and perceived potential.

The fourth column, “Youth Club Quota,” applies to those lodges with youth clubs and reflects applications written for members between the ages of 0 and 17. “Youth Club” totals are applied toward the lodge’s total quota.

The sixth column, “Lodge Incentive Count,” reflects the number of new certificates issued for the Lodge Recognition and Incentive Program.

Mayborn Center 3303 North Third Street in Temple Make plans to be in Temple on Saturday, August 6 for the 2005 SPJST State Youth Achievement Day at the Mayborn Convention Center. SPJST youth who received first place honors in their district competitions this summer will be competing at the state level in various competitions, including group

Lodge Letters Section Lodge 4 Hallettsville plans Family Day Dear Lodge 4 Members, SPJST Lodge 4, Hallettsville will hold is Annual Family Day on Sunday, August 14, 2005, at the American Legion Hall, beginning at 11 a.m. We will have a social hour, games and a catered meal which will be served at noon. Barbecue pork and sausage with all the trimmings is on the menu. Desserts brought by members will be enjoyed with the meal.

We will have speakers from the SPJST Supreme Lodge and from District Six who will update us on events of the SPJST. Fifty-year members will be honored. Door prizes will be awarded by the lodge. Bingo and entertainment by our youth will provide us with a very pleasant afternoon.

bands we have out here. What would we do without the smiling face of Gladys always there to collect our ticket money? We can’t forget our Financial Secretary Agnes and our FAC Alex. However, there is trouble on the horizon. Alex and Agnes have sold their home in Austin. They will be moving. What are we going to do? Can you help? We will need some of you to step in and help. I know we can’t fill their shoes, but I know we have some very capable members out there. You know how Uncle Sam says, “I want you.” Your SPJST lodge wants you.

Our youth had the SPJST Float here for Western Days. The youngsters always enjoy riding on the float.

We need more of our youth club to come and get involved in the SPJST. After all, they are the future of the SPJST. We have a great insurance program. Do not let it die! Look at all the good our local lodge has done for the local charities as well as other programs. Let us not forget the scholarship program. With everything getting so expensive, we need all the help we can get.

We will be working on the youth room. There is a lot of work to be done—cleaning, lighting, etc. The trustees will see what needs to be done.

The adults are going to try to put together a float or vehicle to have in the Western Days parade.

“Happy Birthday” was sung to Waldine, Katy, and Irene. We had no June anniversaries.

There is something in a simple hug that always warms the heart. It welcomes us back home and makes it

Lodge 80, Holland meets August 4 President Frank Pajestka, Jr. called to order the meeting of SPJST Lodge 80 on July 2, 2005, at 4 p.m. The membership stood for the Pledge of Allegiance and a moment of silence for departed members. All officers were present. Travis Richter was absent from the board of directors.

Secretary Linda Hill read the minutes of the June meeting. They were approved as read. She read thank yous from Kyle Spinn, Joyce Hill, and Adam Spinn for the scholarships awarded to them by Lodge 80. Also, a thank you was read from Holland ISD teachers for sausages given to them during teacher appreciation week.

Treasurer Glen Latham gave the financial report.

Linda stated we have two new members by transfer—Judy and Taylor Paul. In a motion by Calvin Eckermann, seconded by Tony Sladecek, they were accepted.

Melissa Vrabel reported on volunteer work hours by members.

The president then presented to the membership the SPJST Heritage Celebrity-Am Scramble Golf Tournament to be held in Salado on August 13. Coleman Benner moved to give $100, seconded by Rita Janke.

State Training Coordinator/Field Manager Jim Wiest reported on the SPJST Float in the Holland Corn Festival parade. He thanked everyone for their help and participation.

Coleman Benner is raising funds for MDA. In a motion by Curtis Wolf and seconded by Tony Sladecek, the membership agreed to give $100. Coleman also stated the Holland Volunteer Fire Department would be in the Belton July Fourth parade, and children were to come by McDonald’s afterwards for their candy.

Frankie stated there is a leak in the roof of the barbecue house. This needs to be looked into and repaired.

Instead of meeting the first Saturday in August, the membership agreed to meet on Thursday night,

On the sick list, Frank Pajestka, Sr. is recuperating from hip surgery and doing very well. Also recuperating from surgery is Tony Sladecek. He is back and working bingo.

Brother Frankie stated the American Legion bingo contract lease needs to be renewed at a cost of $75 per session. He also stated there needs to be some cleaning done around the hall.

The auditing committee will meet July 21 before bingo to audit the books.

Lodge 215 South Plains hosts annual cook-off The SPJST Lodge 215, South Plains Second Annual No Adult Supervision Barbecue and Chili Cook-Off is set for Saturday, July 30, 2005, in Tahoka, Texas.

The 100 percent payback event benefits SPJST Lodge 215, South Plains Youth Club. Cooked briskets will be sold for SPJST youth.

The entry fee is $60 plus one cooked brisket. This is for one or all meat categories. These are brisket, pork spare ribs, and one-half chicken.

The entry fee is $10 for jackpot beans, and $18 for CASI chili.

Everyone is welcome at the Friday night open jam. On Friday and Saturday, entertainment will be provided by the West Texas Musicians Association.

Goodie bags will be available to the first 20 paid entries. Cash prizes and awards will be presented to first, second, and third places in each meat category. There will also be awards for fourth through 10th places.

Lynn County residents will be eligible for the county championship.

Join us for the Friday evening, August 12 from 7 to 11 p.m. at SPJST Lodge 47, Seaton Star Hall. Special guest will be Miss Texas 2006 Morgan Matlock who was crowned on Saturday, July 9! Music will be by Johnny Lyon and the Country Nu Notes. Admission is free to tournament players and the public is invited. Tickets are $7 each and are available through the SPJST Home Office in Temple. Children ages 12 and under will be admitted free when accompanied by a parent. Golf tournament and SPJST Heritage Gala proceeds benefit the SPJST Library, Archives and Museum and the SPJST Education and Nature Center.

Lady in the Chair

By David Knape Lodge 187, Round Rock Silently she sits slumped over there, the little old lady in the wooden wheelchair.

Of children raised on love’s sweet touch she helped them grow and suffered much.

She bobs her head adrift in dreams, life is simple now It seems.

Of broken English and stress and strife she survived it all this hardscrabble life.

All that remains in her short days is to sit and sleep, A misty haze.

They built a home they scrimped and saved and made things last and found a way.

She is so small now so fragile and frail, her hair is white her skin is pale.

The fire is gone from her long life as mother, worker, friend, and wife.

In sleep she sees all over again the memories that she stored within.

Of youth and beauty of husband and home of the trip they took on their honeymoon.

So cached in memory of glorious days she sees the past resolves the maze.

The lady sits the shadow plays across her dim and unlit stage, the music that made up her soul is now an echo of the old.

She waits for something defying death and fights to linger for one last breath.

Yet still somehow and still someway the spark of life still burns this day and the lady dances to the music of old her green eyes greet the tunes of gold and time comes back to help her through and sweeps away the dust of blue And so she sits a gem so rare, the little old lady in the wooden wheelchair!

Lodge 251, Pearsall elects officers at family day party Dear Members, The members of Lodge 251, Pearsall gathered on Friday, July 1 at Camino Real Park in Pearsall for a Family Day party which included the election of officers and the organization of our youth club. A total of 22 adults and 17 children joined in the fun which included games and a pinata. Grilled hamburgers were also served.

During the meeting, officers were elected for the remainder of the year. They are: President Elsa Martinez Vice President Cesar Garza Secretary Isabel Garza Treasurer Annmarie Lopez Reporter Julianna Lozano Youth Leader Elsa Martinez

Special guests in attendance included District Seven Director Bob Bayer, District Seven Youth Counselor Wendy Pruski, State Youth Director

John Hoelscher, State Fraternal Activities Coordinator Michael Morris, and Supreme Lodge President Brian Vanicek. We were also happy to have Pearsall Mayor George Cavazos join in the celebration. Thanks, Mr. Cavazos, for helping out with the children’s games and to all of the SPJST officials who are working with us to build our new lodge!

The next meeting will be on August 17 at 7 p.m at the Brush Country Steak House.

Beran family The 20th Beran family reunion will be held Sunday, August 14, 2005, at the American Legion Hall in Moulton, Texas. Registration is at 10 a.m., and dinner will be served at 12 noon.

In Memoriam Expression of Sympathy We, the undersigned Resolution Committee of SPJST Lodge 80, Holland, Texas, and on behalf of our entire membership, wish to express our sincere and heartfelt sympathy to the family of our departed lodge sister, ADELA ANNE ZAJICEK, of Holland who passed away on June 29, 2005, at her home at the age of 84.

Services were at 4 p.m. on Saturday, July 2 at Val Verde Baptist Church with Dr. Rodney Kruse officiating. Burial was held at a later date.

Sister Zajicek was born in the Seaton community and was a homemaker and rancher’s wife.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Leopold Zajicek.

Survivors are daughters, Lou Dusek of Holland and Susan Johnson of LeClaire, Iowa.

May our departed sister rest in eternal peace and her memory remain with us forever.

Expression of Sympathy On behalf of the SPJST Lodge 54, West officers and members, the Resolution Committee wishes to express our condolences to bereaved family, relatives, and many friends of our departed lodge member, RAYMOND J. HOLASEK, age 78 of West, who passed away Friday, June 24, 2005, at Providence Health Center in Waco.

Military graveside services were at 3 p.m.

June 27 at Waco Memorial Park with West VFW Post 4819 of West and John Hurtick officiating. The family Raymond J. Holasek received visitors from 6 to 8 p.m.

Sunday, June 26 at Aderhold Funeral Home Chapel.

Raymond was born on May 20, 1927, in West, the son of Joseph F.

and Mayme (Vavra) Holasek. He graduated from West High School in l944 then entered the United States Army, serving his country from 1944 to 1946 in Texas, California and Korea.

On December 31, 1947, he was united in marriage to Lou Ellen ‘Wencie’ Jenkins of West. He then received his Bachelor’s Degree in Geology and his Master’s Degree in Mathematics, both from the University of Texas. Raymond was employed by Marathon Oil Co. as a Geologist for 35 years before retiring in 1986.

During that period, Ray and Wencie lived in Midland; Durango, Colorado; Casper, Wyoming; Shreveport, Louisiana; Houston; Anchorage, Alaska; Finley, Ohio; Jakarta, Indonesia; and London, England. They returned to West to retire and raise Longhorn cattle.

Ray was a member of SPJST Lodge 54, University of Texas Exes, former treasurer of the West Community Hospital Board, American Association of Petroleum Geologists, treasurer of the Czech Heritage Society of Texas, American Legion Post 478, Kiwanis blood drive coordinator, served on the board of directors for the Czech Educational Foundation of Texas, and an avid sports fan, particularly the University of Texas Longhorns and West Trojans.

Raymond was the son of Josef Holasek, publisher of the SPJST Vestnik from 1933 (Ennis Convention) through 1973 (after Houston Convention).

He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Doris Henderson; and nephew, Joe Henderson.

Survivors included his beloved wife of 57 years, Wencie of West; son, Joseph Carroll Holasek and wife Debbie; daughter, Karla Rae Holasek, all of San Diego, California; brothers-in-law, John C. Hurtick and wife Alison of West and G.W. ‘Bill’ Henderson of Llano; granddaughters, Halea Holasek and Alana Holasek; nieces, Barbara O’Rear, Susan Trammell, and Lorri Park; great-nieces, Kate O’Rear and Joey Lynn Williams; great-nephew, Will Williams; beloved dog and ‘best friend’ Amy; and other relatives and friends.

Expression of Sympathy The members of Lodge 91, Crosby wish to express our deepest and sincerest sympathy to the family of our departed brother, CALVIN FRANK SLOVACEK. Calvin Frank Slovacek passed away Wednesday morning, June 29, 2005, in a Baytown hospital.

He was born September 15, 1926, in Crosby, Texas, to Frank and Toni Slovacek. He was a welder with Richmond Tank Car Company, a member of Crosby United Methodist

Church and a veteran of the U.S. Army.

He is preceded in death by his parents; brother Johnny Slivacek; brother-in-law Thomas Simpson of Highlands, Ruth and Ray Maghe; brother and sister-in-law Frank and Jewel Slovacek of Broussard, Louisiana, and Shirley Slovacek; grandchildren Keith and Ryhan

SPJST State Queen’s Notebook By 2004-2005 SPJST State Queen Jessica Schumann Over the past year, I have had some wonderful experiences as State Queen.

In two weekends, I attended the fifth and sixth of my state royalty appearances—first with the BrucevilleEddy Classic Car Show and Barbecue Cook-Off and the Belton Fourth of July Parade.

These events were an honor to attend and a worthy conclusion to my reign as State Queen.

On June 25, I attended the Classic Car Show and Barbecue Cook-Off in Bruceville-Eddy.

Though hot, the breeze and convenient, shaded pavilion kept the weather from becoming excruciating. There were many things to do and see in Bruceville-Eddy that day. I was most impressed with the vast array of cars— old and new, and one of the best chopped barbecue sandwiches I have ever eaten. Besides incredible cars and excellent food, the event also featured shopping, food vendors, a barbecue cook-off, various raffles, a silent auction, and a Beatles cover band featuring— who else?— Elvis. Besides the fact that the band performed excellent renditions of classic numbers, Josh and I were lucky enough to have our picture taken with this talented group. The Classic Car Show and Barbecue Cook-Off in Bruceville-Eddy proved to be a great opportunity for me as State Queen.

Then, on Monday, July 4, I woke up bright and early to attend the Belton Fourth of July Parade. Our group assembled at the campus of the University of Mary-Hardin Baylor to prepare for the parade. Then, sometime shortly after 10 a.m. following pictures and final preparations, we took off. The SPJST Float was a tribute to the armed forces. Along with the Royalty Court and other SPJST youth, we were escorted on the float by dancing bears clad in camouflage, and as we went through the streets of Belton, we were serenaded by patriotic music and continuous streams of bubbles. I thought it was a great idea to incorporate support for our troops into the theme of the float, and it appeared that a lot of other people thought so, too, judging by the fact that we were applauded almost the whole duration of the parade. The Belton Fourth of July Parade was one of the biggest events Josh, Mark, Sara, and I had the opportunity to attend this year, and I would like to praise everyone

for their hard work who helped to make it happen.

In fact, I would like to say thank you to everyone who has been a part of my State Queen experience this year. First and foremost to Brian Vanicek for taking the Royalty Court under his wing when I’m sure that he had plenty of other things heaped on his plate. Then, to Melanie Zavodny and David Nauert who were always there helping out. Also, I would like to thank John Hoelscher who, even though he just began his involvement with the Royalty Court, supported us wholeheartedly in the short time he got to know us. I would also like to show my appreciation to my fellow members of the Royalty Court: Josh and Mark Siptak, who were great State Royalty and always entertained me through parades, and Sara Sump, whom I was extremely proud to have as my duchess. I would also like to extend a thank you to anyone else who lent their time, support, and hospitality to me and the other members of the Royalty Court.

And to the future 2005-2006 State Royalty, I promise that you’re going to have a great time with these wonderful people. I hope you’ll have as much fun (if not more!) as I did during the 2004-2005 SPJST year. It’s been an honor to represent the SPJST.

Laramie attended his first SPJST meeting as a member in June, 2005. He’s been attending with his big brother, Coy. He enjoys helping his Bubba (Coy) with his 4-H goats. He attended the Learning Station and will start kindergarten in August at Caldwell Elementary.

District Three Camp July 22 - 25 Camp Val Verde District Three will start its camp on Friday, July 22 with registration at 10 am. Lunch will be served at 12:30 p.m. Great fun things as well as learning activities are being planned for these four days, and I just cannot wait!

This year’s theme is “SPJST— Soaring to New Heights!” I have a few things to remind everyone as to what to bring and what not to bring.

Things to Bring • Challenge Course permission slip signed by parents for children ages nine to seniors • a medical note if you cannot participate in water sport events • jeans for horsebacking riding • no open-toe shoes • flip flops can be worn but only at pool side • swim suits (one for pool and one for canoeing) • beach towel • bath towel/wash cloth • twin sheets for air mattresses • pillow • sleep bag/light blanket (optional) • personal items (toothbrush, toothpaste, hair brush, soap, shampoo, deodorant . . . etc.)

District Seven Camp July 30 - August 1 Echo Hill Ranch Dear District Seven Campers, District Seven Camp will be held at Echo Hill Ranch in Medina, Texas, on July 30, 31 and August 1, 2005.

Camp will begin at 12 noon on Saturday and will conclude around 2 p.m. on Monday, August 1. Please do not get to camp before noon on Saturday. We will eat around 12:45 p.m.

Below is a list of items that each camper will need to bring to camp: • Clothes for two days of camping (proper attire required) • Personal items (toothbrush, toothpaste, brush or comb, soap, shampoo, Deodorant, sunscreen, bug repellent, etc.)

• Long pants and close-toed shoes for horseback riding (Everyone will ride this year).

Directions to Camp From San Antonio: Take IH-10 to Boerne, turn left on Highway 46, follow it until you get to Highway 16, Turn right on Highway 16 to Bandera. In Bandera, turn right on to Highway 173, and follow it through to Medina. About five miles past Medina will be the Medina Children’s Home on the right. Turn left on the road across the street and follow the signs to Echo Hill Camp.

After the second water crossing. turn left and continue to Echo Hill.

From Hondo: Take Highway 173 to Medina Children’s Home located five miles past Medina, Texas. Turn left on the road directly across from the Children’s Home and follow the signs to Echo Hill.

My sister and I both had five entries in the craft competitions, I even placed first with my hobby kit entry. We will be going to State YAD in August because our junior group talent placed first, and we will also have a beseda circle to perform.

My sister performed an individual talent, and although she received an honorable mention, I want to congratulate her for having performed all by herself on stage for the first time.

I want to say thank you to Leslie Sims for allowing me to be her duchess in the royalty competition. It was an honor to be your attendant. I will be going to State YAD in August down in Temple. Mark your calendars to go—it is sure to be a great time.

The Junior Youth Club of Lodge 84 held its June meeting on Wednesday, June 29. Election of officers was held, and the officers will be installed into office on Monday, July 18.

Our new president is Rachel McManus, and the vice president is Scott Cowan. Other officers are Secretary Elisabeth Cowan; Treasurer Zachary McManus; Reporter Melinda McClellan; Sergeant-At-Arms Luke Malone; Flag Bearer Samuell Malone; and Sunshine Committee Jason Sims.

That is about all I have to report.

This conference begins on Friday afternoon, July 29 at 4:30 p.m. The featured speakers on Friday afternoon will be Mr. W.M. Von Maszewski, C.G.R.S., speaking on “The Price of Passage: The Experiences of Early Immigrants” and Ms. Anne Becker Lindemann, a noted Czech genealogical researcher, speaking on “Researching Local Texas Histories for Genealogy Research”.

Friday evening the Houston Czech Cultural Center will host a reception and tour of the HCCC. The conference will reconvene at 8:30 a.m. Saturday morning, July 30.

The featured speaker on Saturday morning will be Mr. Leo Baca, the eminent Texas Czech historian and genealogical researcher who has published nine volumes of immigration records. Mr. Baca will be speaking on “What DNA Studies Tell Us About Our Czech Background”.

From 10 to 11:30 a.m., the CHS will hold a brief summer state meeting.

Then, lunch will be served from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. The cost will be $7 per person. Lunch reservations must be made by July 25. Contact Janis Hrncir as noted below.

Then, Saturday evening after the conference, the Czech Heritage Society of Texas will host a reception at the CHS Library and Archives facility, located at 4117 Willowbend Boulevard in Houston.

The CHS Traveling Library will be available both days, along with computer research capability, for those interested in doing genealogical research at the conference. Mr. Leo Baca’s nine volumes of immigration records will be just one part of the extensive genealogical research material available. Conference attendees will also have the opportunity to visit various vendor booths with merchandise of interest to Americans and Texans of Czech Moravian ancestry.

(CHS) was founded in 1982 and is dedicated to the preservation and promotion of the history, heritage, culture, language and genealogy of the Czech and Moravian peoples who came to Texas from the traditional Czech lands. The Society and its 14 Chapters across Texas regularly engage in various cultural activities, which along with this genealogy conference, include cultural exchange programs, youth events, Czech language classes, and trips to the Czech Republic.

This free, two-day conference is open to the public and will be of interest to everyone, whether they are of Czech or Moravian ancestry or not. Those who are unable to attend this entire conference will be welcome to attend whatever part they wish to attend.

Host a foreign exchange student In the month of July, as we celebrate our nation’s independence, consider the joy of introducing a high school exchange student to the American culture. You can act as an ambassador of this great nation by welcoming one of these students into your life and into your home. Give your family a chance to foster relationships between countries and make lifelong friends with people around the world.

The CIEE (Council on International Educational Exchange) Program still needs host families in the Austin area to provide a bed, meals and a loving home for high school students arriving in August from Czech Republic and Poland.

The students are between the ages of 15 and 18 years, participate in crosscultural exchange, learn about American and share their own customs and culture. Staying for 10 months, the students are screened both in their home countries and by the CIEE program for academic excellence and English proficiency.

The students are fully insured and are responsible for their own personal spending money and lunches at school.
