It’s looking like Christmas

hristmas traditions are as varied as the families who celebrate the holiday. Here’s a look at some popular symbols of the season and how they came to be.

Advent Calendars: The first calendar counting down to Christmas dates back to the 19th century. People counted down 24 or 25 days until Christmas (with the last day being Christmas Eve or Christmas Day) by using chalk lines to mark off the days. Later on, the tradition of lighting a candle each night was born. Today, Advent calendars vary. Some have drawers or doors that are opened every day to reveal a religious icon piece of candy, or you may even find ones with cartoon characters like Mickey Mouse.

Candles: The first use of candles at Christmas was in the Roman festival of Saturnalia, where tall tapers of wax were given as gifts to guests and as an offering to Saturn as a symbol of his light. As Christianity spread, candles were placed in the front window of homes to guide the Christ Child as He went from house to house on Christmas Eve. Candy Canes: According to the National Confectioners Association, in the 17th century, the choirmaster at the Cologne Cathedral in Germany gave his young singers sugar sticks to keep them quiet during ceremonies. In honor of the occasion, he had the candies bent into shepherds’ crooks. In 1847, a German-Swedish immigrant decorated a small blue spruce with

paper ornaments and candy canes. By the 1900s, the candy cane got its red and white stripes and peppermint flavors. They were mass produced by the 1950s, eliminating the laborious task of making the treat, and their popularity spread.

Christmas Tree: Germans would decorate fir trees, inside and out, with roses, apples, and colored paper. The tradition hit England and America via the German immigrants in Pennsylvania in the 1800s. Of course, a Christmas tree isn’t complete without ornaments. Decorating trees dates back to the Victorian times.

Woolworths department store sold the first manufactured Christmas tree, and the trend spread.

Mistletoe: The Scandinavians thought of mistletoe as a peaceful and harmonious plant. And they linked Frigg, their goddess of love, with mistletoe. The combination of these two schools of thought brought about the custom of kissing under the mistletoe. Those who kissed beneath the mistletoe were thought to have happiness and good luck the next year.

Stockings: A man was so sad over the death of his wife that he spent all his money. Unfortunately, this habit left his three daughters without money for wedding dowries. St. Nicholas wanted to help the poor girls' cause, so he anonymously threw three small pouches of gold coins down the chimney of the their home. The coins landed in the stockings of the women, who had hung them by the fireplace to dry.

From the President’s Department State FAC announces 2006 tournaments Greetings Fraternalists! Here’s hoping that your lodge elections went well and your plans for a happy and healthy holiday go as expected. It has been a busy month for me, as well as for the Fraternal Department. I have recently completed a series of workshops for three of our newest lodges that will be chartered sometime in December, 2005. The workshops were designed to inform and train the lodge officers of these respective lodges on a variety of subjects. The lodges that were trained are as follows: 223, Palacios; 234, Luling; 240, Bay City; and 258, Seguin. I want to personally thank them for their participation and interaction – I had a blast!

I think that this lodge officer training workshop might benefit lodges that have experienced recent turnovers in their leadership positions. It might even be well-received by a lodge that is struggling some with effectively conducting its monthly business meetings. In 2006, we will be conducting this workshop at various lodges. If you’d like to have us offer your lodge, or even district, this fun and informative workshop, contact us at the Home Office.

Deer Antler Contest The contest begins November 1, 2005, and will run through January 31, 2006. Watch for updated information in upcoming Věstníks or see your lodge FAC for more information and entry forms.

Home Stretch Referral Contest Remember that you still have time to turn in those important member referral cards. If you haven’t heard, there’s a contest going on that rewards both adult and youth members for their efforts in securing new leads for our sales representatives.

The contest runs through the end of December, so keep those cards coming in. There’s still time to win some great prizes!

State Tournaments In 2006, SPJST will once again provide some fraternal fun in the form of three state tournaments for our members and invited guests. The hosts for three of our state tournaments are as follows: SPJST State Tarok Saturday, February 4, 2006 Lodge 47, Seaton SPJST State Straight Domino Saturday, March 4, 2006 Lodge 66, Waco SPJST State 42 Domino Saturday, April 1, 2006 Lodge 48, Beyersville Also, make note that the SPJST State Horseshoe and Youth Washer Tournament will be on Saturday, May 20, 2006, at the Jimmy Bryant Horseshoe Complex in Waco, Texas.

For your benefit, all of these dates will be printed on the 2006 SPJST Calendar.

State Youth Director encourages youth participation Dear Youth Leaders, The year is racing to a close. I hope everything is going well for you and your youth club. December 20 will be my one year anniversary date as the SPJST State Youth Director. Thank you for teaching me so much and for showing me great hospitality when I am in your area. I am looking forward to continuing my work with the SPJST in the days, months, and years to come.

Core Challenge Core Challenge is shaping up to be a great event. All of the work that goes into this program will be worth it. I believe that this program is on the same level as Pass, Punt, and Kick and Hoop-It-Up. Our program is loosely based on the strongman competitions that you may sometimes see on television. The SPJST is presently seeking to trademark this program for our own use.

The kids who come out will be able to compete against other boys and girls in wholesome physical competition.

Another great thing about Core Challenge is that I believe it will be a great way to get new members into our lodges and learn more about the SPJST. I would like to invite you to participate or help in some way with one of these events when you get the chance. Everyone who was at Lodge 172, Pasadena for our pilot test of the new program had a good time and walked away with a smile on their faces. I’ll be writing more about Core Challenge in the coming weeks. In the meantime, if you have any questions about Core Challenge, please feel free to contact me.

DYC Meeting District Youth Counselors met in Kerrville on November 5 to review the various aspects of the youth program for 2006. All aspects of the program, including Youth Achievement Days, summer camp, and the various seasonal youth contests were discussed.

The day started out with a trip to YMCA Hamman Ranch, which is where the LIT Retreat will be held in June (more later in this letter).

Afterward, the DYCs enjoyed a short visit to Fredericksburg for a little shopping. Then it was back to Kerrville where we met to review the various aspects of the youth program, including camp, YAD, Core Challenge, new contests, and other items that needed to be addressed. It was a productive meeting and gave all of us a chance to get a good jump start on the year ahead.

2006 Youth Program Theme: “SPJST: Youth In Action” Our youth club theme is “SPJST: Youth In Action.” With regards to the 2006 Youth Leaders Workshop, DYCs expressed an interest in changing things up a little from last year’s weekend program. This year’s youth leader retreat is tentatively scheduled for March 4 in Salado. Plans are for the program to start on that Saturday at 10 a.m. and stay over night and leave Sunday morning around 10 a.m.

2006 SPJST Camp Tee Shirt Design Contest The camp tee-shirt theme is “SPJST: Youth In Action.” Complete information and an official entry form are available from your youth leader.

Please encourage all of your youth club members to enter. The grand prize is a shopping spree at Wal-Mart.

Contest deadline is January 31, 2005.

All participants receive 20 merit points and a participation certificate.

STATE FRATERNAL ACTIVITIES COORDINATOR – State Fraternal Activities Coordinator Michael Morris presented his report. He reviewed activities he had been involved with during the previous quarter and activities for the next quarter. Chairman Victorick informed State Fraternal Activities Coordinator Morris the Board had gone on record to identify lodges that needed assistance and to make this his primary emphasis.

STATE YOUTH DIRECTOR – State Youth Director Hoelscher reviewed his report with the Board. He reported on developing a physical fitness program called Core Challenge for the youth. This could be made available to youth other than our members. Director Pflughaupt moved, seconded by Director Bayer, to proceed with having the Core Challenge copyrighted as it is a test of physical strength and agility and then it would be an SPJST program. Motion passed unanimously.

State Youth Director Hoelscher presented information on Camp Val Verde and also a camping site at Lake Granger. The district youth camps can be at any camp they wish, but would be encouraged to use any camp the ENC might own.

MINUTES – The minutes of the July 2005 Supreme Lodge were reviewed page by page. On page 137 under Audit “Dave Legg” should be changed to “Dane Legg”. Director Bayer moved, seconded by Financial Secretary Mikulas, to approve the minutes as corrected. Motion passed unanimously.

CHALLENGE 2005 – President Vanicek reported on the home stretch referral card contest he had requested to be added to the Challenge 2005 Program.

The additional cost will be an added expense to either the youth program or the insurance department. The President and Vice President agreed the next time a change is made to a program prior approval will need to be requested before the program is authorized by the Board and implemented.

OLD BUSINESS

MUSEUM – President Vanicek reviewed the museum report.

MEMBERSHIP CARDS – Information was presented by President Vanicek concerning a new membership card and its cost. Director Bayer moved, seconded by President Vanicek, to set aside the membership card project until there is a need for the card due to additional benefits. Motion passed unanimously. The present card will continue to be mailed to members who request them and with new certificates.

FRATERNAL COALITION – President Vanicek presented an update on meetings of the fraternal coalition and other fraternals that are involved. In the 2007 Texas Legislature the coalition may pursue a statewide legislative ad valorem tax exemption. Director Pflughaupt moved, seconded by Director Ahlstrom, to continue to work with the coalition and actively pursue this tax exemption for the benefit of our lodges. Motion passed unanimously. It was agreed for the State Fraternal Activities Coordinator Michael Morris and Editor and Director of Communications Melanie Zavodny to print some sample language in the Vestnik that the members could incorporate in letters to their legislative representatives.

Director Bayer moved, seconded by Director Krizan, to go into executive session to discuss a personnel matter. Motion passed unanimously.

Recess from the executive session was taken at 10:15 a.m.

Director Bayer moved, seconded by Director Krizan, for the President, Vice President, State Fraternal Activities Coordinator, State Youth Director, and State Field Representatives, with the input of the director, to develop a program to work with lodges the director identifies as in need of assistance. This is the area the Supreme Lodge wants to put primary emphasis on and the results will be reviewed each quarter. Motion passed unanimously.

Vice President McBride introduced Phillip McBee the new District Three Field Representative to the Board. Doni Powell, Susan Shofner and Karen Kaspar were recognized by Vice President McBride for five years of service to SPJST. Vice President McBride recognized District One Field Representative Bill Orsak and District Six Field Representative Karen Kaspar for completing the certification of field managers course.

LIBRARY, ARCHIVES AND MUSEUM – President Vanicek reported on attending the previous Library, Archives and Museum board meeting. He presented a request from the Library, Archives and Museum board to know if the Supreme Lodge would be interested in renting space in the new museum when it became available. The discussion will continue later in the meeting.

LODGES – Vice President McBride reported Lodge 234, Luling had been organized. Vice President McBride moved, seconded by Director Bayer, to extend the date for new lodges in process of being organized to January 31, 2006. Motion passed unanimously.

Lodges that were organized in the last quarter were Lodge 223, Palacios, Lodge 234, Luling, and Lodge 258, Seguin. Lodge 240, Bay City will be organized November 1, 2005. Chartering for Lodges 223, Palacios, Lodge 234, Luling, and Lodge 258, Seguin will be in December.

GUARANTEED ISSUE – Vice President McBride reported 247 guaranteed issue certificates have been issued for $1,152,500.00 of insurance coverages.

There were 29,496 letters mailed offering members the guaranteed certificates.

FINAL EXPENSE INSURANCE – Vice President McBride reported the Final Expense Insurance Product will consist of five different options. This product should be available for marketing before the end of the year.

E & O COVERAGE – Vice President McBride reported two letters have been mailed to the sales representatives concerning E & O coverage and the cost.

Even though it is mandatory, about 50 percent of the sales representatives have mailed in their premiums. The premiums may be charged against commissions.

SALES INCENTIVES – Vice President McBride reported on the sales trip November 4, 5, and 6, 2005, to Corpus Christi. For an agent to be eligible for the trip, the agent had to have a minimum of $3,000 premiums and be in the top 20 sales representatives.

drawings for the proposed remodeling of the Home Office Building. There was a discussion concerning what the neighborhood around the Home Office would be in several years.

SALES – Vice President McBride reported on sales figures comparing 2005 to 2004. In 2005, there have been 2519 applications written for $99,086,826 insurance written for $640,784.54 of earned premiums. District One, Four, Five, Six, and Seven have met their quotas for insurance written and District Four, Six, and Seven have met their quotas for applications written.

LODGE COMPLIANCE – Secretary-Treasurer Anglin reported Lodge 57, Gonzales; 135, Ennis; 149, Alvin; 167, Penelope; and 195, Cleburne did not send in their officers listing for 2005. In November, requests for 2006 officers will be mailed. The 990 and 990T forms have not been received from Lodges 5, Tioga; 84, Dallas; 135, Ennis; 149, Alvin; 167, Penelope; 171, Lockhart; 180, Burleson; 250, Harlingen; and 251, Pearsall.

QUARTERLY STATEMENT – Financial Secretary Mikulas went over the quarterly statement line by line and answered questions.

VESTNIK – Financial Secretary Mikulas reported the subscription list of the Vestnik is 9,839 and postage costs approximately $1,600 weekly and publishing costs $1,500 weekly.

BUDGET – Financial Secretary Mikulas went over the 2005 budget. Income is at 75 percent of the budget amount and expenses are at 69 percent of the budget amount.

COMMISSIONS – Financial Secretary Mikulas reported the first direct deposits on commissions were on September 30, 2005 for 125 agents.

LAWSUIT, TAX SUITS, FORECLOSURES, BANKRUPTCIES AND PENDING LOANS – Legal Advisor Popelka reported on lawsuits, foreclosures, bankruptcies and pending loans.

The Board went into executive session to discuss litigation.

EDITOR AND DIRECTOR OF COMMUNICATIONS – Editor and Director of Communications Zavodny was welcomed to the meeting. She discussed the new web site and the appearances of the float. There was a discussion concerning the float being a good advertising item, but due to the demand of the float, there needs to be some limits placed on the float. Editor and Director of Communications Zavodny is to make a recommendation at the January meeting concerning the appearances of the float.

Bids for the SPJST calendar were reviewed. President Vanicek moved, seconded by Director Pflughaupt, to accept the bid for calendars from the Temple Daily Telegram at $0.4529 per calendar. Motion passed unanimously.

DISTRICT TWO – Director Wuensche reported on attending local lodge meetings at Lodge 18, Elgin; Lodge 48, Beyersville; Lodge 74, Lovelady; Lodge 182, Falls County; and fundraisers at Lodge 47, Seaton and Lodge 80, Holland, the Golf Gala, Library, Archives and Museum, and ENC Fund Raiser.

He attended District Two camp and District Two YAD. He also attended NFCA and a CE class.

DISTRICT THREE – Director Krizan stated that things are progressing nicely in District Three, both in lodge development and membership recruitment.

District Three has a good opportunity to achieve its sales quota this year. The Society has made significant progress in growth in the last five years as a result of its current management policy and Supreme Lodge administrative direction.

He felt that we are on the right track and that we should continue to maintain our 5 percent goal of growth along with aggressive approaches in both marketing and investments. The fact that we have attained a net gain in (membership) certificates over the last five years coupled with healthy surplus increases indicates a very positive and refreshing sign that the SPJST is a vibrant fraternal society. His thanks to all those individuals responsible for this achievement.

VĚSTNÍK DISTRICT FOUR – Director Rollwitz reported on attending meetings at Lodge 49, Rowena; Lodge 157, Lubbock; and Lodge 229, Abilene. He met with several sales representatives. He attended the NFCA meeting and State YAD. DISTRICT FIVE – Director Pflughaupt reported on attending meetings at Lodge 81, Needville; Lodge 88, Houston; Lodge 139, Danbury; Lodge 142, Houston; Lodge 156, Baytown; Lodge 162, Iowa Colony; Lodge 172, Pasadena; Lodge 191, Lufkin; and Lodge 196, Houston-West. He participated in State YAD, the SPJST Heritage Gala at Lodge 47, Seaton and the CelebrityAm Golf Scramble in Salado. He attended the Lodge 88 Awards Party, District Five Fall Meeting/Fun Day, and the Czech Cultural Center Houston Gala. He also attended the NFCA and TFC. DISTRICT SIX – Director Ahlstrom attended meetings at Lodge 8, Weimar, Lodge 23, Moravia; Lodge 63, Sweet Home; Lodge 151, Wharton; Lodge 223, Palacios; Lodge 240, Bay City. He attended Lodge 4, Hallettsville Family Day, Lodge 184, Moulton Jamboree Parade, and Lodge 41, Port Lavaca Parade. He attended District Six Fall meeting, State YAD, the Golf Gala and continuing education classes. He attended NFCA and TFC. He met with other fraternals to discuss property tax exemption.

DISTRICT SEVEN – Director Bayer attended lodge meetings at Lodge 107, Floresville; Lodge 239, Hondo; Lodge 247, San Marcos; and Lodge 258, Seguin. He attended District Seven Camp, State YAD, and the District Seven Fall meeting. He attended continuing education classes and attended the TFC. He reported the Youth Department in District Seven may increase over 200 percent this year.

DISTRICT ONE – Director Victorick reported on attending meetings at Lodge 1, Fayetteville; Lodge 13, Dime Box; Lodge 17, New Tabor; Lodge 39, Bryan; Lodge 141, Sealy; Lodge 179, Warrenton; Lodge 186, Caldwell; and Lodge 201, Bleiblerville-Nelsonville. He attended District One YAD, State YAD, the Golf Gala and Tournament. He attended NFCA and TFC and District One Fall Fun Day. He attended the continuing education classes in District One. He reported on meeting with other fraternals in the Fraternal Coalition.

President Vanicek moved, seconded by Director Ahlstrom, to approve the executive minutes as read. Motion passed unanimously.

LODGE INSURANCE PROGRAM – President Vanicek requested Supreme Lodge ratification to continue pursuing a general liability/liquor liability insurance program and related regional lodge workshops for SPJST lodges. He reported that a program had been developed with an insurer with considerable experience in working with fraternal organizations. Pursuant to ratifying the program, several lodges were identified as pilot lodges to evaluate the cost effectiveness of the new program. They are Lodge 13, Dime Box; 29, Taylor; 32, Victoria; 49, Rowena; and 172, Pasadena. The results of this test group are to be presented at the January meeting.

PRESIDENT’S COUNCIL ON PHYSICAL FITNESS – President Vanicek requested Supreme Lodge ratification for a program to partner with the President’s Council on Physical Fitness and Sports in 2006 and actively promote the goals and objectives of the President’s Challenge. The goal of this project was to promote healthier lifestyles for all SPJST members, especially through health promotion initiatives and the local lodges and youth clubs.

Recommendation died for lack of a second.

POLKA FESTIVAL – President Vanicek presented information on hosting a polka festival in the Houston area with proceeds to benefit the victims of Hurricane Katrina and Rita. There was a lengthy discussion concerning this proposal and some alternate ideas. President Vanicek moved, seconded by Director Bayer, for SPJST to establish a matching fund for local lodges to make donations for the hurricane relief effort by December 31, 2005. The funds would be donated to the Salvation Army. The maximum amount SPJST would match would be $10,000. Motion passed unanimously.

JOIN HANDS DAY 2006 – President Vanicek presented information on Join Hands Day 2006. After a discussion about Join Hands Day, President Vanicek moved, seconded by Vice President McBride, to provide local lodges or youth clubs $100.00 incentives to develop and/or promote their project with other community service organizations, civic groups, school groups or other local lodges. Motion passed unanimously.

MORTGAGE LOANS – Secretary-Treasurer Anglin presented loans that are delinquent three or more months and recommendations for each loan.

Secretary-Treasurer Anglin moved, seconded by Legal Advisor Popelka, to accept the recommendations on the loans. Motion passed unanimously.

Secretary-Treasurer Anglin moved, seconded by Director Bayer, to set a loss reserve of $20,000 on delinquent mortgage loans. Motion passed unanimously.

PARLIAMENTARY PROCEDURE COURSE – President Vanicek presented information on a parliamentary procedure refresher course before the district spring meetings. President Vanicek moved, seconded by Vice President McBride, to proceed with a parliamentary procedure course at each spring district meeting. Motion passed unanimously.

REO 196 – Secretary-Treasurer Anglin reported REO 196 in Bell County sold for $55,000 and there was a loss of $42,965.97. Director Bayer moved, seconded by Director Pflughaupt, to ratify the sale of REO 196. Motion passed unanimously.

INVESTMENTS – Secretary-Treasurer Anglin moved to ratify the investments for the previous quarter. Motion seconded by Director Pflughaupt and passed unanimously.

DISTRICT FAC – President Vanicek presented proposed District Fraternal Activities Coordinator Guidelines and compensation. A lengthy discussion followed. Director Bayer moved, seconded by Vice President McBride, for the President to decide when and where the DFAC is to travel and reimbursement is to be authorized by the President. Voting in favor were Vice President McBride, Secretary-Treasurer Anglin, Financial Secretary Mikulas, Legal Advisor Popelka, Director Victorick, Director Wuensche, Director Krizan, Director Rollwitz, Director Pflughaupt, Director Ahlstrom and Director Bayer.

President Vanicek abstained. Motion passed.

BUILDING SIGNS – President Vanicek presented information on whether or not the Home Office wanted to develop signs for local lodge buildings. There was a discussion concerning whether or not the signs should be lighted and the possible size of the signs. Director Ahlstrom moved, seconded by Director Rollwitz, for the president to provide more information at the January meeting concerning the design of the sign and the cost. Motion passed unanimously.

Director Bayer moved, seconded by Financial Secretary Mikulas, for Vice President McBride to pursue getting a speaker for the awards banquet. Motion passed unanimously.

PRODUCTS – Vice President McBride presented information on products that are not priced on the 2001 CSO table. Some of these products will need to be updated by 2007.

ACTION ‘06 – Vice President McBride presented information on Action ‘06, the incentive program for 2006.

EQUIPMENT – Secretary-Treasurer Anglin reported on the replacing of the 10-year old telephone system. The new system was installed October 8, 2005.

Secretary-Treasurer Anglin moved, seconded by Director Bayer, to ratify the purchase of the new phone system. Motion passed unanimously.

SECURITIES – Secretary-Treasurer Anglin reported since the securities are being held in book entry form at Morgan Stanley the safety deposit box at the bank is empty. Director Bayer moved, seconded by Financial Secretary Mikulas, to close the empty safety deposit box. Motion passed unanimously.

BUILDING – There was a discussion as to what the area around the Home Office would be used for in about 15 years. President Vanicek and Vice President McBride were appointed to talk to the Temple Planning and Zoning Committee about the plans for this area and also contact the Post Office about possible plans for relocation.

FINANCIAL STATEMENT – Financial Secretary Mikulas reviewed the financial statement as of September 30, 2005 which compared the figures from September 30, 2004 to September 30, 2005. Income was decreased by 7 percent over the same period and expenses increased by 1 percent over the same period.

DISCOUNTS OF “B” CERTIFICATES – Financial Secretary Mikulas moved, seconded by Director Ahlstrom, to continue the discounts for class “B” certificates for 2006. There would be a 25 percent reduction of premiums for certificates that have been in force 35 years or more and attained the age of 70 years and an additional 25 percent reduction in premiums when the member attains age 75. Motion passed unanimously.

LODGE MEMBERSHIP – Financial Secretary Mikulas reported that as of September 30, 2005, there are 52,941 certificates on the books and 44,516 members.

SPJST LODGE MANAGEMENT ACCOUNT – Financial Secretary Mikulas reported in 2005, $293,695.14 has been deposited into these accounts and since the inception of this program, $818,029.72 has been deposited into this account.

TEXAS DEPARTMENT OF INSURANCE – The Texas Department of Insurance Audit of 1999 through 2003 was reviewed by the Board. The exam started in January, 2005, and concluded August 31, 2005. Financial Secretary Mikulas moved, seconded by Director Bayer, to accept the Texas Department of Insurance Audit. Motion passed unanimously.

Financial Secretary Mikulas reported the books will be closed on Thursday, December 29, 2005 at 10:00 a.m.

Alice Fontaine from Allen Bailey and Associates was welcomed to the meeting to discuss the cash flow testing. It was pointed out that currently SPJST is spending $37.00 per certificate for fraternal benefits.

INTEREST SENSITIVE PRODUCTS – The interest rate for interest sensitive products was discussed. Secretary-Treasurer Anglin moved, seconded by Vice President McBride, for the interest rate of Universal Life to be 5.75 percent through January 31, 2006. Motion passed unanimously.

Secretary-Treasurer Anglin moved, seconded by Director Pflughaupt, for the interest rate of Annuity I be set at 5 percent through January 31, 2006. Motion passed unanimously.

Secretary-Treasurer Anglin moved, seconded by Legal Advisor Popelka, to set the interest rate of Annuity II at 4.5 percent through January 31, 2006. Motion passed unanimously.

Secretary-Treasurer Anglin moved, seconded by President Vanicek, to set the interest rate of Annuity III at 4.5 percent. Director Pflughaupt moved, seconded by Director Krizan, to amend the motion for the interest rate on Annuity III be 4.65 percent. Voting in favor of the amendment were President Vanicek, Vice President McBride, Secretary-Treasurer Anglin, Financial Secretary Mikulas, Legal Advisor Popelka, Director Victorick, Director Krizan, Director Rollwitz, Director Pflughaupt, Director Ahlstrom, and Director Bayer; Director Wuensche voting against. Motion passed.

The Immediate Annuity and SPJST Fund Management Accounts interest rates will be set at 4.65 percent, the same as Annuity III. CHILD ABUSE POLICY – Legal Advisor Popelka presented guidelines relating to SPJST’s policy for reporting suspected child abuse.

VĚSTNÍK deepest appreciation to Jerry Mikulas on achieving 45 years of loyal and dedicated service to this society. For the upcoming holiday season, Director Krizan encouraged the Supreme Lodge to attend as many year-end local lodge events as possible. Director Krizan also invited everyone to attend the District Three meeting on Sunday, October 23, 2005, at Lodge 183, Arlington. Director Krizan reported he thought this had been a very productive meeting.

DISTRICT FOUR – Director Rollwitz requested Vice President McBride to hire an assistant training person for District Four.

DISTRICT FIVE – Director Pflughaupt invited everyone to Lodge 196’s 10th Anniversary Party, Lodge 88’s Czech Day, and Lodge 172’s Core Challenge.

He also reported the NFCA is better than it has been previously. Director Pflughaupt congratulated Financial Secretary Mikulas on his 45 years of service to SPJST. DISTRICT SIX – Director Ahlstrom reported the Velarad Cemetery has now been designated a Texas Historic Cemetery. He also thought this was a good meeting. Director Ahlstrom congratulated Financial Secretary Mikulas on his dedicated service of 45 years.

DISTRICT SEVEN – Director Bayer thought it was a very informative meeting. He congratulated Vice President McBride on the new sales representatives and sales are moving in the right direction. He congratulated Financial Secretary Mikulas on his 45 years.

Recess was taken from 10:40 a.m. to 10:55 a.m.

DISTRICT ONE – Director Victorick thought the meeting was informative and a lot was accomplished. He requested numbers of lapses over the last three to five years not including death claims.

The Board went into executive session to discuss possible litigation. The executive session recessed at 11:20 a.m.

The meetings for 2006 will be January 17, 18, 19; April 18, 19, 20; July 18, 19, 20; and October 17, 18, 19.

DISTRICT TWO – Director Wuensche requested for the officers to get the information to the directors before the Supreme Lodge meeting. He also presented information on members who were dissatisfied with the way the bank handled the problems with the premium refund checks. Financial Secretary Mikulas responded this had been taken care of.

The audits in January and July will begin after lunch on the first day of the meeting.

Lodge 4 Hallettsville Christmas party this Sunday Our Lodge 4, Hallettsville met Sunday, November 13, 2005, at the Legion Tap Room at 2 p.m. with Vice President Annie Vahalik presiding.

The Pledge of Allegiance was recited. A resolution of sympathy was read by Gaynell Chudej for our departed member, Frank J. Wojtek.

Secretary-Treasurer Helen Zabransky read the minutes to the last meeting and gave the financial report. Correspondence was read.

FAC Annie Vahalik reported on upcoming SPJST projects and activities. Sunshine Chairman Margaret Smotek reported on the monthly bingo at Stevens Convalescent Center with Lillie Balusek and Evelyn Holy assisting. In-room visits to Hallettsville Rehab were made

by Lillie Balusek, Helen Zabransky, and Ms. Smotek.

Reports were given on the District Six Fall Meeting held in Taiton.

Congratulations to Joe Siptak and Philip Vahalik for placing third in horseshoes. Also, in the youth Christmas Ornament Contest, winners were, in ages 9 to 11, third place - Sarah Siptak; ages 12 to 14, first place - Holly Scott; and ages 15 to senior, third place - Marissa Sustaita.

The District Six Spring Meeting will be hosted by Lodge 32, Victoria.

The members voted to contribute $25 to the Salvation Army Relief Fund sponsored by SPJST. Cemetery Representative Philip Vahalik gave a short report.

Youth Leader Mary Ann Sustaita reported on youth club activities.

The youth club is planning to be in the Hallettsville Festival of Lights Parade on Saturday, November, 26 with the SPJST Float. The youth club will also furnish turkey and ham at the next meeting.

Next Meeting/Christmas Party— December 11 It was decided to again have a noon meal at our December 11 meeting. It will begin at 12 noon. At 12:30 p.m., the meal will be served with turkey and ham, and members are asked to bring a side dish and dessert. A short meeting will follow.

The youth will have a Christmas program, and Santa Claus will stop by.

Games will be played.

Election of officers was held with all present officers being re-elected.

Please be advised that our members and families will again be going to the Sherwood Health Care in Bryan. We are to meet at Sherwood at 6 p.m. on December 16, 2005, in the lobby. We have been asked to stay about 15 minutes. We will hand out gifts to the bedridden patients and sing Christmas carols. We have done this for several years, and the youth club members and adults take part.

It is so gratifying to see the small children walk up to a bed, give the resident one of the stuffed, soft animals. Sometimes, the patients cling to the children and do not want to let go. It is heart-breaking. Our youth want to do this, and we are so proud of them for it.

After the visit to Sherwood, we will go to eat and just have a good time visiting and talking about the good that we did.

Our Christmas party will be held on December 10. We will have our lodge meeting the same day. All starts at 3 p.m. with a social. Supper will be all provided by our lodge.

FAC Dottie Everett is taking care of food preparations. No one needs to bring food. The lodge meeting will be held after our meal. Then, the fun and celebration will begin. We will have a white elephant gift exchange.

Gifts need not be new, and fun gifts are welcome. There will be games for all, and members can stay as long as they wish.

Roll call cited all officers present, and the trustees were all present.

Secretary Debbie Sczech read the minutes from the October 9, 2005, meeting. Motion was made by J.C. Kocurek to accept the minutes, seconded by Edmund Kana. Motion carried.

Communications were read by Secretary Debbie Sczech. They included: memorial scholarships— Gerald Hubenak, Louise Juranek, Tillie Massingill, and Eugene Valigura; letter from the SPJST Home Office about Texas State Insurance Report; Hospice card with an invitation to attend the memorial lunch and purchase an item; thank you note from the James Bacak family; and death claims on L.J. Mader and Gerald Hubenak.

The treasurer’s report was prepared by Lorraine Kana.

FAC Dee Floyd stated that a catered meal will be served at the Christmas party in conjunction with our December meeting on December 11.

The audit committee had no report.

Youth Leader Jennifer reported that the children made turkeys for the

Supreme Lodge Designates Salvation Army as Hurricane Relief Beneficiary The Supreme Lodge at its October meeting voted to make up to $10,000 in matching funds available to SPJST lodges and youth clubs seeking to extend recovery assistance in the aftermath of the devastating 2005 hurricane season. The Salvation Army has been designated to receive the funds. A listing of lodges and youth clubs contributing to this and related hurricane relief efforts will appear in the Vestnik and on SPJST’s website, www.spjst.com.

As a national first responder in times of disaster, The Salvation Army provides assistance in the way of food, water, clean-up kits, spiritual counseling, and other essential relief supplies to both emergency relief workers and survivors of disasters such as hurricanes.

Salvation Army fundraising campaigns are conducted on a local and regional basis. There is no fund-raising at the national level and 83 cents

out of every dollar collected by the Salvation Army goes directly to service projects—among the highest percentages of any non-profit organization in the world.

All lodge and youth club donations received by the SPJST Home Office through December 31 will be matched dollar for dollar — up to a maximum of $10,000 — and will be presented to the Salvation Army in January.

Lodges and youth clubs wanting to contribute to this fundraising effort are asked to make their checks payable to the SPJST and to get their donations in to the SPJST Home Office on or before December 31. Checks may be made payable to the SPJST, with a notation that the funds are being directed to the Salvation Army relief effort. If you have any questions, please direct them to Supreme Lodge President Brian Vanicek’s office.

Lodge 48, Beyersville Gives to S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home No. 1

SPJST Lodge 48, Beyersville presents a $100 contribution to the S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home No. 1 in Taylor.

District Two Director Bobby Wuensche also matched the contribution with a check from the SPJST Supreme Lodge. The funds are to help provide the residents with Christmas greetings.

Her ornament will be hung on the Christmas tree at the SPJST Home Office in Temple. Craig Cerny, Daisy Enriquez, and JoLynn Enriquez placed in several other categories. Ashley’s first place state entry in photography will be displayed in the SPJST Library, Archives and Museum.

The nominating committee includes Chairman Betty Sanders, Charlie Sanders, and Diana Seaman.

The bingo committee had no report.

Snack bar — Josephine Bacak gave the October and November sales reports.

Hall Rental Chairman Tria Svatek reported bookings on November 25 and 26; December 2 and 3; January 13 and 14, 2006; and additional bookings in the months ahead.

By-law Committee—Edith Molberg provided copies of the November, 2005, new by-laws for the members. The by-laws were voted on, and the motion carried.

Cemetery—Vlasta Bartos had no report.

The roof committee had no report.

There was no report on the barbecue cook-off.

The mowing committee reported the yard was mowed by J.C. Kocurek.

Janet Marek of the resolution committee presented a report.

The trustees had no report.

Upcoming events at our lodge include the Christmas party on Sunday, December 11. Registration is from 11:30 a.m. to 12 noon. The catered meal will be served at 12:30 p.m. followed by the meeting and installation of officers. Music will be provided by Rudy Laitkep and his band.

I would like to report on the fundraiser now. We spent most of our September meeting discussing the fundraiser. As in previous years, it was a great success. But we owe this year’s success to so many people, that I cannot name them all. We would like to thank the ladies with Bunco who provided so many yummy desserts. I don’t think that anyone lost weight that night. We would like to also thank Cindy Steffek for organizing the desserts and gathering so many donations.

So many of the lodge members pitched in and helped out during the day. Bonnie and Robert Leshikar took the reins in the absence of

Bobby and Ruth who were in Wisconsin for the National Fraternal Congress of America. We also had youth club members Macy and Heather helping cut onions the night before. Macy, Heather, Bret, Kayla, Colin, Casey, Janine, and Lisa were big helpers on Saturday. Donna and Tim helped organize a youth club basket which was donated to the mother lodge. Ron and Melissa Randig were there the night before and the day of as well. They both pitched in many hours of help and donations.

Entertaining the crowd was Harvey Johnson of Johnson Brother’s Auctioneers. They always do such a great job with the live auction that it wouldn’t be the same without them. Bonnie Urbanek and her girls organized the silent auction, which, of course, had the best items as well.

There were 48 players. We missed our friends from Ennis, Texas, but they had conflicting obligations. Hopefully, we will see them next year. We saw mostly our continued supporters from past years.

We had new friends come out this year, too.

We found out around lunchtime that the gauntlet had been thrown out

by Jimmy Turek to his dad, Jerry, and their friend, Randy, on the way to the tourney. All three had equal time romancing the traveling trophy in years past. Although Jimmy had to bring it back to pass to the new winner, he believed that he would be victorious once again, placing him on a hill just a little bit higher than Jerry and Randy. We also missed the rest of the Turek crew as they were recover-

ing from Friday night “football”. Of course, the Tureks brought some beauties to round out their rough edges.

Thanks, Valerie and Carolyn, for helping us out with the guys. By the way, Valerie was sporting a ring around her finger and now goes by a different last name. Congrats and we hope to meet the other half next year!

We also had the beautiful Tammy helping out on the computer and tallying the scores and totals. Until I joined her, she was doing a great job.

I had to leave momentarily to go get lunch from Carol’s. I barely made it back without pulling over and diving into the turkey and dressing, beans, and sweet potatoes. I did, though it took great restraint. Along with the great main courses, we had wonderful desserts made by some of the ladies to top off the meal.

Although naptime was requested, the players forged ahead. Up until the

last three rounds, it was still anybody’s guess who would come out on top. By the last three hands, there were only about eight players vying for the top prizes. We had two folks struggling to make the bottom of the list. No, it wasn’t me! Hey, Richard, we sure did miss you out there. Anyway, by the last round, we knew the the trophy would be keeping Jimmy warm at night for the next year. As you can see from the picture, Bobby had to tear it out of his fingers to get the new nameplate inscribed. Jerry and Randy, you better brush up on your skills because we know that Jimmy is giving you a hard time about it. Of course, Frankie Klinkovsky wasn’t there this year, or there may have been a tie.

Bobby said to thank Ruth and Alice for taking care of the kitchen, Tammy and Linda for the computer work, and Denisse (that’s me!) for registering the guests. But especially, thanks to all

you who came out and supported us and for making the desserts. A special thanks goes to Wright Distributing and Brown Distributing for donating door prizes. We can never forget to mention Rita and her silent partner, Wayne, for all of the help that they do by pitching in wherever needed.

As I mentioned in my last letter, we express our deepest gratitude to Jeremy Steffek who helps every year by making the flyers and other materials.

Helping out in the auction, we had friends from the Taylor Rodeo Association like Tamara. Amy Rohlack assisted her in recording the bids. Helping display the items was Mr. Walker. Jerry Turek was in his position of helping pull out the names out of the barrel. He took no pleasure in seeing his name and his friends, the Klaus’, pulled out. His partner and son, Jimmy, was not there this year because he was practicing for the domino tournament (held in October) by flying to Vegas. We thought per chance he had found Ms. Right and had eloped, but alas, Jerry said it was just the guys.

We thank the members and friends who went out and obtained the donations for any part of the fundraiser.

There were many exciting new events this year, thanks to Robert, and it added to the fun. We want to thank Honorary Supreme Lodge President Howard Leshikar for his help and his donations of SPJST items.

But we owe the biggest part of our success to all of the people who attended and bought items during the live and silent auctions. Without your continued patronage, we would never have fulfilled our dreams of rebuilding the lodge.

We hope that you know that you are invited to our Christmas party on December 9. We just need to know that you are attending so that we can prepare enough food. We ask that you call Bonnie or Ruth to RSVP and to bring a dessert.

I will report more about the fundraiser with my next letter. It gives me time to figure out the hundreds of people who I left out.

Lodge 79 Corpus Christi Christmas party December 11 Before we had our November, 2005, meeting, we enjoyed a great meal of turkey, ham, and all the trimmings. The meal was catered, and we had 44 members and guests.

Our Christmas party will be held on December 11 with the doors opening at 3 p.m. Members and guests are asked to bring a covered dish. This year, again, we will have our party combined with Sokol Corpus Christi.

Sokol longevity pins will be given to 22 Sokol members —19 of these are also SPJST members! We will once again have the Irish dancers come dance for us plus other surprises. Santa will make his yearly appearance.

Lodge 49, Rowena welcomes new member Lodge 49, Rowena welcomes its newest member, Caroline Grace Schwertner. Grace was born on September 14, 2005, in San Angelo, Texas. Grace came into the world at 8:22 a.m. She weighed seven pounds, 13 ounces and was 21 inches long. Grace’s parents are Brad and Nika Schwertner. She also has a big sister, Olivia. Grandparents are Maynard and Nancy Schwertner of Rowena. All are members are Lodge 49, Rowena. Great-grandparents are Ernest and Annie Braden of Wall and members of Lodge 160, San Angelo. Grace is happy to have her grandparents buy her a certificate. Sales representative was Sylvia Rollwitz of Lodge 49, Rowena.

We are still collecting old eyeglasses and hearing aids. Lodge 79 wants to thank Bud and Rosalie Duplessis, Marion Peterek, and Henrietta Fullam for making a donation in November. Keep collecting and bringing these items to the meeting.

On November 14, we joined Sokol in a kolache bake. Eight of our members spent the whole day baking those wonderful treats. We will have another combined bake with Sokol in December.

Scholarships Do get your application in. You may be a winner of a $1,000 scholarship, but you must send in your application.

October was Czech Heritage Month in Texas, and many mayors and counties were asked to make a proclamation in their cities/counties.

Proclamations were received from 54 cities and 54 counties. Thanks to all who participated.

The year is fast coming to an end, and we need new members. I ask all our members to check their family and friends and see if you can find us some new members. You are doing them a favor.

Our fall has finally arrived, and we are enjoying very nice weather after a very hot summer.

Our monthly donation was given to Childrens’ Christmas Appeal.

Also, we want to thank our member, Ed Janota, who was visiting in the area, for attending our meeting.

Brother Ed won one of our big prizes.

He then donated it to the scholarship fund. This is true fraternalism at work. Thanks, Brother Ed. I hope your Thanksgiving was great. Now comes Christmas!

Lodge 80, Holland Christmas party December 9 Dear Members and Friends, I would like to remind all of you of our annual Christmas party on Friday, December 9, 2005, at 6 p.m. at the lodge hall. We have heard from Santa Claus, and he informed us that he will try to arrive after 7 p.m.

Lodge 88, Houston reports on member, lodge activities Brother Bennie Kocich turned 90 years young at one of the Vrazel’s dances, the latter part of September.

This is his most favorite place to have a good time, says Sister Frances Seeberger. Cake and sandwiches were available for all of his family and friends who celebrated along with him. Brother Bennie is still very active in the lodge’s Mens’ Club, Choral Club, and was selected “Mr. Czech Day” in 2004! (He always has something kind and/or funny to say when meeting him in the hallways of the lodge.)

Another “youngster,” A. J. Stayton, is still going strong while someone had to tell him to slow down long enough to attend three birthday parties held in his honor for his landmark 80th. Brother Stayton is currently Lodge 88 Mens’ Club President and always stays on top of

things around the lodge. He and wife, Carol, have been providing the hamburger buns for the youth for Thursday night bingo for a number of years. He has held many viable offices in the lodge throughout the years.

Sister and Brother Leander and daughter, Carol Globke, attended another ex-POW National Convention in Denver, Colorado.

While there, they visited Pikes Peak, the Garden of the Gods, and had a tour of the U.S. Air Force Academy.

Then on the way home, they just so happened to detour through Central City and Black Hawk where Josephine reported there are lots of casinos! (No wonder it took them a couple more days to return.) We have no report on their profit/loss statement!

Annual Meeting—December 11 Lodge 88’s annual meeting and election of new officers for 2006 will begin at 10 a.m. on Sunday, December 11, 2005. Please make your plans to attend this very important meeting.

Lodge 142 Houston Christmas party this Sunday President Keith Kieschnick called our meeting of Lodge 142, Houston to order at 2 p.m. on Sunday, November 13, 2005, after our Thanksgiving meal of turkey, dressing, and trimmings was served at 1 p.m.

All members present stood for the Pledge of Allegiance led by President Keith Kieschnick.

All officers’ and committee reports were given.

Sick Committee reports that Ruth Kieschnick and Rosie Tumis were in the hospital. We were happy to have them present at our November meeting.

Under old business, remember at our December meeting we will have a discussion and vote whether or not to sell our real estate or stay as it is.

The meeting, which is on December 11, is our annual meeting, and election of officers for the year 2006 will be held. We will also have our catered Christmas dinner at 1 p.m. before our meeting at 2 p.m.

Celebrating their 55th anniversary on November 4 are Nelson and Alice Jochen. Anniversary on October 3 was for Robert and Barbara Boyd, celebrating 36 years. Birthdays in November were Elmo Walther, Grace Owens, Mary Ann Kieschnick, and Alene Kieschnick. The capsule prize for $40 went unclaimed due to the absence of Trent Weikel, Jennifer Brogdon, and Mariana Salinas. Next month, this prize goes to $50. You could be a winner if you are present.

Lodge 179 Warrenton reports on November meeting Lodge 179, Warrenton met on Thursday, November 10, 2005, at the Carmine Lions Club building.

President Orville Kunkel called the meeting to order. He then introduced

our special guests, Supreme Lodge President Brian Vanicek, Supreme Lodge Chairman and District One Director Donnie Victorick and wife Janice, and Nadine Layton. We were very pleased to have them attend our little lodge and welcome them back any time.

Next, the group recited the Pledge of Allegiance to the U.S. and Texas flags. Secretary Bea Vasek read the minutes of the previous meeting.

Treasurer Ora Lee Levien gave the treasurer’s report. Both reports were accepted as read.

Our Fraternal Activities Coordinator Joan Goehring reminded everyone about the SPJST 100 Pennies Scholarship Fund Drive going on now and encouraged everyone to give. She also read various correspondence. Lodge 179 approved a donation to Church Women United.

Lodge 172 members enjoyed the accordion music provided by Mario Perdone at their Christmas-Thanksgiving party on November 27, 2005. Mario played good accordion music for the members listening and dancing pleasure.

Lodge 183 Arlington Christmas party December 9 Dear Vestnik Readers, The November 14, 2005, meeting of SPJST Lodge 183, Arlington was called to order at 7 p.m. by President Ann Pustejovksy.

The Pledge of Allegiance was recited. Members remained standing for a moment of silent prayer for sick and departed members and friends.

Special prayers were requested for the son of Dorothy and Johnny Adamek who is now recovering.

Roll call of officers/trustees showed all present except Pat Sill, with an excused absence. Also with an excused absence was Martha Phillips for the Sunshine Committee.

There were 21 members present. The

minutes of the October meeting were read by Secretary Daniel Roznovsky and, after some corrections, were approved by the membership.

Johnny Adamek gave the bar/kitchen report. Robert Sill gave the treasurer’s report for the bingo, charity and 183 Club accounts.

Angeline Stiborek gave the financial secretary’s report for this month.

Milka Bralic gave the FAC report and informed the membership about the deer antler contest.

Kay Gerlich Weeks gave the youth report. State King Nick Culliton made a royalty appearance at the Texas Fraternal Congress on October 15. Another appearance will be at the Temple Christmas Parade and SPJST Holiday Open House on Monday, December 5. Our youth club members participated in the National Make a Difference Day on October 22 by washing the tables and chairs and setting up the hall for the District Three Fall Meeting.

They held their November meeting in conjunction with that activity. In addition, the youth competed in the Halloween costume contest and Christmas Ornament Contest at the District Three Fall Meeting at our lodge on October 23.

Congratulations to Hayley Rutt for winning first place in her age category in the Christmas ornament contest.

Her ornament will be hanging on the Christmas tree at the SPJST Home Office in Temple this Christmas season. The youth had a very successful 50/50 raffle at the District Three Fun Day. The youth club members will deliver the canned goods to Mission Arlington on Saturday, November 19.

They plan to decorate the hall on December 4, present a program at the

lodge Christmas party, and have their annual Christmas quilt raffle. The SPJST 100 Pennies Scholarship Fund Drive continues. Our youth will be attending Holiday in the Park at Six Flags with the District Three Youth on December 3.

Under old business, Eugene Havran and Kenneth Cepak continue to research ways that the hall can conserve electricity. They will present a proposal at the January, 2006, meeting. The audit committee completed its work and noted that the books were in order. They did recommend that the receipts from Sam’s Club be attached to the monthly check.

President Ann Pustejovsky thanked the members for their help in hosting the District Three Fall Meeting/Fun Day at our lodge on Sunday, October 23. The day included complimentary breakfast, lunch, and various games like a cake spin, bingo and a jumphouse for the children. Over 500 canned goods and non-perishable items were collected and, as noted in the youth report, will be delivered to Mission Arlington. In addition, the proceeds from the cake spin and nickel bingo will be donated to the SPJST Hurricane Relief Fund.

We, the members of the Resolution Committee of Lodge Slavonic Linden No. 66, Waco, Texas, on behalf of our membership, wish to express our deepest and sincerest sympathy to the family of our departed sister, MARY LILLIAN VRANA, of Waco who died Wednesday, November 2, 2005, at the age of 97.

Rosary was recited at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, November 8 at St. Mary’s Church of the Assumption in West.

Mass of Christian Burial followed the rosary.

Sister Mary was a native of Texas, born and raised in the West area. She married Jim Vrana, and they had 60 years together. Mary and Jim worked at Linden Hall for many years and were honored members of SPJST since August, 1967. Jim preceded Mary in death. Sister Mary’s early years were spent in farming in the Cottonwood and Elm Mott areas.

The last few years she was a resident of West Rest Haven.

Sister Mary was a member of St. Joseph’s in Bellmead and St. Mary’s in West. She loved to cook, dance, play bingo, garden, raise doves, and have garage sales.

Sister Mary is survived by son Leo of Vacaville, California, and wife Sandra; three grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren; close nephew, Harry Vrana of Longview; and other nephews and nieces.

May our departed sister rest in peace.

by Reverend Ed Karasek. Mass of Christian burial was celebrated Tuesday, November 15 with the Reverend Ed Karasek and Reverend John Crowder as celebrants. Burial followed at Fatima Cemetery in Abbott.

Brother Chris was born in Waco to Jerry and Maxine (Vanek) Kazda on January 25, 1972. He graduated from Abbott High School and attended Hill and McLennan Colleges. He met and married the love of his life, Kathleen Ellen Yezzi, and they had two loving children. He worked for Central Transportation Systems in Waco for 11 years. He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in West, Knights of Columbus in Abbott, and SPJST Lodge 66, Waco since October, 1972.

Survivors include his beloved wife of 11 years, Kathleen of West; daughter, Danille of West; son, Parker of West; parents, Jerry and wife Debbie of Abbott, and Maxine Kazda of West; father and mother-in-law, Thomas and Linda Yezzi of Hewitt; brothers, Darryl Kazda and wife Deborah of Hillsboro and Gary Kazda and wife Carrie of Waxahachie; step-brother, Ron

Brother Matthew was born February 28, 1963, in Waco. He attended Waco schools and graduated from Waco High School in 1981.

Lodge 9, Snook Youth Club gives to community Dear Readers, SPJST Lodge 9, Snook Youth Club has been very busy with community and charity services. We collected enough items to fill 25 Operation Christmas Child boxes. This program brings happiness to children around the world through filling shoe boxes with gifts.

We also collected and made bags of fruit to give to members of our community, and we collected lots of toys

Our youth club has agreed to pick up trash four times a year along the county roads that we have adopted. While this is not a fun

project, it is rewarding to know that we are having a small part in keeping our community roads free from trash.

After our November meeting, we divided into groups and picked up several large bags of trash which included cans, paper, and lottery tickets. We hope that we are setting a good example for youth as well as adults to keep our roads clean.

Dobry Den, SPJST Readers, Texas Fraternal Congress was a busy weekend. On Saturday, October 15, 2005, Nick, Chris, Amanda, and I all gathered at the Capitol and watched as the beseda dancers performed, and I sang the National Anthem. Then, we took a tour of the Capitol. We met at the Airport Hilton for lunch, followed by performances from many youth club members. The talents were great! The weekend was lots of fun, and I can’t wait to take my next trip. I’ll keep you posted.

The State Royalty, along with their families and other SPJST youth club members, tour the State Capitol in Austin, Texas, on October 15 in conjunction with the Texas Fraternal Congress.

Lodge 258, Seguin Youth Club reports on November meeting The November 20, 2005, meeting of the Lodge 258, Seguin Youth Club was called to order at 3:15 p.m. by President Jarrod Jenke. Casey Jenke led the Pledge of Allegiance. We had six members in attendance and one adult. We had one new member join our youth club, Kendyl Zunker.

Kendyl is six years old and is in kindergarten at Krueger Elementary.

Our youth club decided to start a scrapbook for the new beginnings of our youth club.

Door prizes were won by Casey Jenke, Jarrod Jenke, Kendyl Zunker, Alvin Petty, Taylor Petty, and Kailee Jenke.

After the meeting, everyone attended the adult lodge meeting followed by a covered dish meal.

Kendyl’s interests include participating in dance, gymnastics, and cheerleading. She enjoys the outdoors, as well as hunting and fishing with her family. She also enjoys arts and crafts.

Poisoning Prevention Smart

Ooooh, Gross . . . It’s Mr. Yuck!

If you see a label with this fellow’s picture on it, steer clear. It’s Mr. Yuck, and it means that container is filled with poison. Years ago, companies used a skull and crossbones to identify poison. Many children were poisoned because they interpreted the skull and crossbones as meaning “pirate food,” and therefore, believed that the substance was not only safe but might be fun to eat. Kids generally don’t get that idea when they see Mr. Yuck!

A baby-sitter or an older brother or sister is many times responsible for the care and safety of young children.

Knowing what to do in the event of a poisoning and following proper poison prevention behaviors are an important part of that responsibility. Use medication only with adult supervision.

Care givers should know that children who are poisoned by prescription and nonprescription medicines are often attracted to them because of their shape, color, and smell. All vitamins and medicines should be stored in a locked cabinet, out of the sight and reach of children. Children should only take medicines or vitamins that are administered by an adult. Care givers should purchase medicines with child resistant caps, avoid taking medicines in front of children, and never refer to medicine as candy.

Always store poisonous substances in their original containers because content information needed by a Poison Control Center or physician is listed on the label. Other locations where children are present should also be safeguarded against preventable poisonings.

The phone number of the local Poison Control Center should be posted near every phone in the home. If you suspect that someone has been poisoned, stay calm and call the local Poison Control Center, 9-11, or the Operator. If possible, bring the poison’s container or label to the phone so you can describe it to the Poison Control Center expert.

Listen carefully to what he or she tells you. If you don’t understand something, ask the expert to repeat it. Don’t hang up the phone until you are told to do so. Contact your local Poison Control Center to learn what to keep at home in case of poisoning. The center may advise that you keep syrup of ipecac and activated charcoal at home. Always call the Poison Control Center immediately when a poisoning happens.

Syrup of ipecac and activated charcoal should only be given upon the advice of the Poison Control Center or physician.

Keep in mind during this holiday season, children can be poisoned by eating the leaves of some indoor plants, like poinsettias. Check the location of all plants and remove those that are dangerous.

Pravidelná čtvrtletní schůze řádu číslo 54 Slovanské podporjící jednoty státu Texasu ve Westu ve státě Texasu se konala 9. listopadu 2004 v naší síni. President Willis přivítal přítomné a složili jsme přísahu americké vlajce. Minutou ticha jsme uctili památku odešlých bratrů Lea C. Dorňáka a Daniela Roberta Foita. Ať odpočívají v pokoji a pozůstalé ať potěší Boží ruka. Tajemnice Ann Emeryová přečetla zápis z minulé schůze a byla schválena s malými opravami. Několik dopisů přišlo k našem řádu, včetně dopisu od školní administrátorky paní Ferrerové se žádostí o příspěvek k maturitnímu večírk na úhradu výdajů pro naše středoškoláky a dopis z Hlavní úřadovny.

Finanční tajemnice Maxine Šefčíková podala dobrou zprávu o stavu členstva a vybírání členských příspěvků. V září byla přijata za členku u našeho řádu jako dospělá Rosalie Albína Marková, agent nebyl uveden. V říjnu pojišťovací agent Freddie Kaluža zapsal nové žádosti pro mládež Haley Marii Chavezovou, Braxstona Michaela Reedyho a Hayden Donn Scotta, pojišťovací agentka Janice Kalužová připsala sama sobě pojistku a dalšími dospělými členkami se staly Helen Marie Matušová a Elsie Marie Šuláková. V minulém období tří měsíců zemřeli dva bratři od našeho řádu: Leo C. Dorňák, který zemřel 3. září 2004, a Robert Daniel Foit, který zemřel 14. září 2004. Ať odpočívají v pokoji. Vyjádření soustrasti jsme poslali zarmouceným příbuzným a ohlášení jejich úmrtí bude uveřejněno ve Věstníku.

Podle názoru Hlavní úřadovny máme nyní u našeho řádu 114 členů mládeže a 750 dospělých členů a členek a zatím jsme dosáhli 23 nových členů pro soutěž o odměnu na konci roku.

Koordinátorka bratrských činností Jean Maléřová oznámila, že u naší jednoty je možno vyhrát zajezd do Los Angeles v Californii a nejlepši odměnu za srnčí parohy a v této době, kdy se přihodilo hodně přírodních neštěstí, je možno podat příspěvky Armádě spásy a připomenula, že potřebuje vyplněné dokumenty co nejdříve, aby je mohla sečíst a poslat do Hlavní úřadovny, proto nezapomeňte vyplnit formuláře.

Pokladní Mary Lou Mynářová podala dobrou zprávu o financích a byly schválena tak, jak byla čtena.

Náš vice president Freddie Kaluža pak podal stručnou zprávu o přípravách na vánoční besídku, která se bude konat 4. prosince 2004 od třetí hodiny odpoledne v naší síni.

Pak proběhly volby úředníků u našeho řádu. Staří ůředníci byli zvoleni jednohlas ně pro další období: president je Wilburn Willis, vice president Freddie Kaluža, finanční tajemnice Maxine Šefčíková, tajemnice a anglicky píšící dopisovatelka je Ann Emeryová, koordinátorka bratrských činností je Jean Maléřová, pokladní Mary Lou Mynářová, česky píšící dopisovatel Jan Vaculík a všechny ostatní výbory a komise zůstávají v platnosti. President Willis poděkoval manažerům naší síně Rayovi a Lilli Matušovým, kteří udržují budovu ve velmi přitažlivém stavu a vzhled uvnitř síně je prvotřídní. Hosté i zákazníci si pochvalují prostředí, které je pro ně připraveno v naší síni.

7.prosinec 2005 Příjezdové místo před budovou je velmi příhodné a oceňované všemi hosty. Nedávno bylo nutno vyměnit mrazírnu a přilehlé prostory, abychom mohli uchovat potraviny a pití v chladnu. Nová úprava je velmi praktická a vhodná pro naše potřeby.

Náš člen Edwin Nors byl zvolen bratrským pracovníkem od našeho řádu.

Příští pravidelná schůze se uskuteční 3. března 2006.

Pak nastalo losování a různé dárky vyhráli Freddie Kaluža, Ivonne Norsová, manžele Hlavěnkovi, Jan Maléřová, pěknou sklenku vyhrál i pisatel těchto řádků.

Po ukončení schůze setrvalo členstvo při dobré svačině v družné zábavě do pozdních večerních hodin.
