SPJST records 3,251 applications written through November in Challenge 2005 campaign Through the end of November, the SPJST received 3,251 applications for insurance and annuity certificates. The goal of the Challenge 2005 membership drive goal of 2,640 applications has been met; however, the campaign continues through December.

In conjunction with SPJST’s Challenge 2005 program, local lodges have been assigned application quotas for the year.

The lodge quota has been based largely on past performance and perceived potential.

Fraternal Benefit Societies: Making a Positive Difference

hristmas is a great time of year for renewing old acquaintances as well as building new relationships. If your lodge is hosting a holiday event, consider it an opportunity to involve your elected officials at the local and state levels. Get to know them and let them know about the good things that your lodge and the SPJST are doing for your members and your local community.

Here are a few ways that fraternal benefit societies are making a positive difference to Americans.

• A fraternal benefit society (“fraternal”), under the Internal Revenue Code (IRC), is a non-profit mutual aid organization that (1) insures members and their families against death, disease and disability, and (2) maintains an active lodge system.

• A majority of our member-societies were founded more than a century ago to provide a sense of community to new Americans. These societies supported religious, educational and patriotic activities, and offered their members life insurance.

• Fraternals have taken on an increasingly vital role in community and social development and charities during a time when the role of government in these areas is decreasing.

• Fraternals provide insurance to their members, which they are required to do under the terms of section 501(c)(8) of the Internal Revenue Code. To understand what a fraternal is, one must see the critical relationship between the insurance and fraternal activities and the public policy and social benefits that are achieved through the combination of these two elements. It is the taxexempt insurance income that supports the fraternal and charitable activities that benefit Americans in the society.

• Fraternals use their t a x - e x e m p t resources to produce more positive community impact than any tax dollar could, and fraternal benefit societies do something no government program can do: they develop community leaders.

• Individuals join our member-societies because of a common bond and a deep desire to engage in organized activities for social good.

Building positive working relationships with your local officials including city and county officials and local school board members - is a year-round effort. The time you give to nurturing these important relationships is well worth the effort!

Join Hands Day is a national event sponsored by America’s Fraternal Benefit Societies in partnership with The Points of Light Foundation and the Volunteer Center National Network. It is a day when young people and adults connect as equal partners in planning an activity that fixes or improves a local problem and affirms the values of caring and working together.

The first step for an SPJST adult lodge or youth club to find a partner organization of the opposite generation. Then, they work together and plan a volunteer project that makes life better right where they live.

Runners-up will receive Certificates of Distinction. In lodges where there is no youth club, lodges are encouraged to join forces with other area lodges and/or community service organizations, civic, school and/or church groups. To receive the $100 incentive, I am requesting that you register the event with the Office of the State Fraternal Activities Coordinator on or before April 7.

Brother Ray called upon Sister Barbara Jean Hykel, Secretary, for the reading of the minutes from our last meeting. The minutes were approved as read. Our Treasurer, Peggy Dobecka, gave her report, which was approved as given. Sister Peggy gave Sister Bessie Petr an opportunity to speak if she wished. Sister Bessie wished all a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. She mentioned how beautiful the hall was and wished that her and Lynda could stay, but they had another function to attend and had to leave.

Brother George Straten, Financial Secretary/Hall Manager, gave his report of two new members—one juvenile and one adult. Thanks to Sister Lydia Dobecka and Brother Jerry Kucera, Sales Representatives.

Brother George reported a New Year’s Eve party on December 31, with

socials for January on the 6th and 20th. Also, our next meeting will be on January 8, 2006, at 2 p.m.

Brother Ray called upon Sister Peggy Dobecka, Youth Leader, for her report. She reported cakes were taken to the rest home on November 2 and again on December 7. She also mentioned that the youth would deliver their Christmas crafts to the Bellmead nursing facility on December 17 and to the West nursing facility on December 18.

The lodge had its Christmas party today, and Sister Peggy had a drawing for door prizes for the youth club. She thanked all who donated to their door prize drawing and thanked all who purchased tickets. The youth attended Six Flags Holiday in the Park on Saturday, December 3 and had a great time even though all the rides were not going. The next youth meeting will be on Sunday, January 8, 2006, at 1:30 p.m. at which time the tree will be taken down. Sister Peggy wishes everyone a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

Sister Barbara Jean Hykel, Fraternal Activities Coordinator, gave her report. She mentioned that the SPJST Home Office needed a 2005 lodge picture. Sokol West is having a fundraiser. Sister Barbara also read a letter from Brother Johnnie Krizan, District Three Director and President of Lodge 6, Cottonwood, as he could not be with us today. Brother Johnnie wished all a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

Sister Barbara also mentioned the State Tarok Tournament at Lodge 47, State Domino Tournament at Lodge 66, Waco, and Lodge 48, Beyersville.

She thanked all the cooks and kitchen crew and others who helped get the Christmas party going. She reminded all about the New Year’s Eve party at the hall on December 31 for fellowship and games.

Sister Barbara mentioned that the Fraternalist of the Year was Brother Jerry Kucera.

The Sunshine Committee, Sister Jerelene Lenart, gave a report that she did not have to send any get-well cards this time. She only had a couple of thank you cards. There was a thank you card from the Christine Svrcek family and a card from the Georgia Kapczynski family. Sister Jerelene wished all a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

Brother Ray called upon Sister Stella Perez for the Donation Committee’s Report. She reported donations for the year 2005 to be given to SPJST Scholarship Fund, West Boys Scouts, Phone Cards for Soldiers, Family Abuse Center, SPJST LAM, Texas Czech Heritage and Cultural Center in La Grange, American Cancer Society of Waco, Multiple Sclerosis (MS), West Sokol, Elm Mott VFD, Leroy VFD, Robinson VFD, Chalk Bluff VFD, Malone VFD, Penelope VFD, and Abbott VFD, which the lodge

Sister Stella Perez also gave a report of the treasurer’s books being audited. The audit committee consisted of Sisters Stella Perez, Georgie Soukup, and Irene Peterson. The books were in order with exception of some outstanding checks.

Those in attendance with December birthdays were Pam Urbanovsky, Dorothy Firasek, and Bobby Hykel. We had a guest that had a birthday also—Ruby Matula.

Happy birthday to these folks and to all with a birthday this month.

Door prizes were then drawn with the $5 door prize won by Irene Schiemenz. Our progressive door prize of $10 was won by Bobby Dobecka. The other progressive door prize winner was Paul Pavelka, not present. Congratulations to the winners!

Lodge 18, Elgin welcomes new member Lodge 18, Elgin welcomes its newest member, Charlie Rayann Craig. Charlie was welcomed to the lodge by Gladys Mogonye.

Gladys has been well known as the “ticket lady” at Lodge 18 for the last 24 years. Charlie frequently attends the Sunday dances and already has a love of polka and waltz music.

Lodge 9, Snook outlines hall goals Lodge 9, Snook met in regular session on Sunday, December 4, 2005, at 1:40 p.m. Hayden and Hannah Kovar led the group in the Pledge of Allegiance.

Ann Schoeneman read the minutes of the November meeting, and they stood approved as read. Donnie Hejl read highlights of the FAC report.

There was no treasurer’s report.

The youth club met after the lodge meeting, to practice for the Christmas program. The lodge accepted a transfer member. We voted to accept the bid from RVOS for the liability and building insurance for 2006.

District One State Field Representative Bill Orsak said that District One has met its goal for the year.

Suggested goals for the hall were discussed. These include a new ceiling for the two stages; new flooring in rest rooms; barbecue pit; window tinting; and lattice on the stage.

Next Meeting—January 4 Officers will be installed in January. The next meeting will be January 4, 2006, at 7:30 p.m., and the youth club will meet at 6:30 p.m.

Lodge 18, Elgin discusses Czech heritage Lodge 18, Elgin met on Tuesday, November 15, 2005. President Mike opened the meeting with the Pledge

of Allegiance and a moment of prayer for all members. Roll call had all officers present. All reports were given and approved.

There was a lot of discussion of how to keep our Czech heritage alive.

So few young people know about taroky, dominoes, or polka and waltz dancing, not to mention kolace and other Czech pastries. We also hear that many people in Elgin do not know about the SPJST and for what we stand. We need a way to expose SPJST to the new residents in Elgin.

We will see what we can work out.

The garage sale was somewhat successful being our first sale.

Get well cards were sent to Morris Boutwell, Fred Lundgren, Janell Peterson, Joe Haisler, and Ruben Krieg.

Our youth club is collecting food for the food pantry. They will participate in the Christmas parade. Great job, youth club. Keep up the good work.

We will have installation of officers at the December meeting. Come out and meet your officers.

The New Year’s Eve Dance is December 31. We hope to have a great crowd.

Strength does not come from physical capacity. It comes from an indomitable will.

Lodge 29, Taylor presents meeting minutes President Ronnie Rieger called the meeting to order at 3:10 p.m. on Sunday, December 4, 2005. All officers were present.

The November minutes were read with one correction. Albin Machu’s name was omitted from the veterans

serving during the Vietnam War. Tammy Whatley gave the treasurer’s report. Donna Pasemann reminded us of the Holiday Open House on December 5 at the SPJST Home Office. The annual tarok tournament will be held at Lodge 47, Seaton on January 14, 2006. Pre-registration is due by January 7, and the entry fee is $20.

District Two Director Bobby Wuensche gave Lodge 29 a Christmas card along with some door prizes for our meeting.

Jesse Pospisil gave the property committee report. He thanked everyone who helped with the meal served to the tarok players on Saturday.

Lodge 66, Waco reports on November meeting The Lodge 66, Waco meeting was called to order by President John Engelke on November 20, 2005, at 2:30 p.m. at Linden Hall in Elm Mott with all officers present. There were 23 members present.

The youth presented the flag and led the Pledge of Allegiance and the motto.

Members stood for a moment of silent prayer for our deceased members, Mary Vrana, Christopher Kazda, and Matthew Simcik.

By Linda M. Wilde, Reporter Lodge 24, Cyclone What a fun day we all had at the SPJST Home Office Holiday Open House. Everything was just perfect.

What more could we have asked for?

My parents, Mr. and Mrs. Anton Vrazel, were gracious enough to give my husband, Daniel Wilde, who is President of Lodge 24, Cyclone, and me a ride to Temple in his beautiful 1929 Model A. We all felt that we had drifted back in time as we came into town, and my dad honked that funnysounding horn at a friend he saw on the sidewalk waiting for the parade to begin. As we passed the old train station on Adams, I could just imagine a time when it would have been encircled with old cars and trucks of that era.

We took a drive by the old building that for many years housed the state offices of SPJST. I had to tell Daniel about the times we would ride the elevator to the floor that

housed the Home Office. That elevator was like a carnival ride for me.

How exciting! As we read the history of SPJST, we all realized that vintage things like the Model A and the fraternalism of SPJST, can last for generations and only get better with age.

We took a complete tour of the SPJST Museum and visited with many of the officers and even got a couple of pictures by the Christmas tree.

Before leaving, we had to stop and take a picture in front of the sign to put in our scrapbook. What wonderful memories we will have of that beautiful sunshiny day in December when we came to Temple for the Holiday Open House.

State Horseshoe Tournament will be held at Jimmy Bryant Complex in Waco on May 20. Sister Dana also read correspondence from Cathy Locket Conniff, CPA for the Texas Department of Insurance and from Supreme Lodge Secretary-Treasurer Lanita Anglin concerning the insurance report.

Sister Darlene Engelke said that she received correspondence from District Three Treasurer Pam Durham concerning District Three’s dues.

Chairman of the Board George Pauling had Secretary of the Board Darlene Engelke read the minutes of the Board of Directors meeting of November 20, 2005.

Janey Dujka gave the Entertainment Committee report. Today, hot dogs, chili, chips, and pickles are being served along with the desserts brought by the members present.

Fraternal Activities Coordinator Mary Alice Langlotz gave the FAC report. She received a letter from State FAC Morris listing upcoming events. Sister Mary Alice also handed out Everyday Hero pins to all members present at today’s meeting.

Sister Dorothy Veselka gave the cheer and condolence report. She sent get well cards to Rosemary Spence and Irene Mueller. Sympathy cards were sent to James Yates on the death of his sister; to Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Simcik on the death of their son, Matthew Simcik; to Richard Simcik on the death of his brother, Matthew Simcik; to the Leo Vrana family on the death of their mother, Mary Vrana; and to the Christopher Kazda family on the death of Christopher. Sister Dorothy also read a nice thank you card from Sister Irene Mueller. Irene, we are glad you are feeling better.

Youth Leader Sister Debbie Galler gave the youth report. There were four youth present at today’s meeting. Sister Debbie reported that the youth will be making Santa treat bags on November 28 at 6:30 p.m. at her house. The youth discussed having a raffle at the Christmas party again this year. The youth will attend the Temple Christmas Parade and SPJST Home Office Holiday Open House in Temple on December 5. The youth will go to Six Flags on December 3.

The youth Christmas party is December 18 at 4 p.m., and they will go to Westview to bowl. They will exchange gifts and afterwards, eat pizza. The youth will participate in the Angel Tree Project for the Lutheran Social Services for children who are abused, abandoned, and

Brother Frankie reported the directors decided not to give turkeys to the workers this year.

Rita Spinn read the American Legion Post 526 lease agreement with Lodge 80. Motion was made, seconded and passed. Agreement is from January 1, 2006, through December 31, 2006.

Rita Spinn thanked Frankie, Jr. and presented a gift for his service as president.

Brother Frankie reported the second largest crowd ever at bingo on the Thursday before Thanksgiving.

We had 300 in attendance. Coleman Benner moved, seconded by Curtis Wolf, to have a super bingo on December 22, and if that goes well, have one on December 29.

The president introduced from the Home Office Jerry Mikulas and his wife, Betty. Brother Jerry installed the new officers and directors.

Officers are President Coleman Benner; Vice President Barbara Taisler; Secretary Linda Hill; Treasurer Jewel Wolf; Youth Leader Gracie Schlickeisen; Reporter Estelle Coker; and FAC and Second Vice President Paula Weir. The new directors are Doni Powell, Rita Spinn, Helen Pajestka, Curtis Wolf, Tony Sladecek, Connie Horak, and Paula Weir. Brother Jerry thanked Frankie, Jr., G.L. Brisbin, and Glen Latham for a job well done.

New President Coleman Benner asked all officers and directors to a called meeting Sunday night at 6:30 p.m. Also, a meeting will be held on Wednesday night at 6:30 p.m., and this meeting includes the membership. He asked for everyone’s help and support.

The youth then presented Jerry and Betty Mikulas with gifts.

Those having birthdays in December are Mitchell Hill, Delores Sladecek, Anita Tubbs, Carol Wolf, Linda Hill, Frank Pajestka, Jr., and Bryan Tubbs.

In the drawing for door prizes, winners were J.D. Coker—jacket; Mitchell Hill—shirt; and Kristi Davis—tote bag.

Other door prizes were won by Gracie Schlickeisen, Fred Busby, Bryce Tubbs, Anita Tubbs, and Tyler Tubbs.

Lodge 25, Ennis members participate in Trinity Valley Community College heritage day Ellis County Czech Heritage Society members Elaine Gallagher and Marjorie Miller, both members of SPJST Lodge 25, Ennis, and Paula Campo recently participated in celebrating Czech, Polish and German Day at Trinity Valley Community College in Athens, Texas.

Elizabeth Starek, Tutor Coordinator for the College, inviting the ladies to join the faculty and students in celebrating the heritage of immigrants who settled in this part of Texas. On November 2, 2005, Elaine and Paula dressed in the costume of the Czech Moravian region of the Czech Republic, and Marjorie dressed in the traditional German drindle. Elaine Gallagher also displayed many pieces of hand-cut and pressed Czech crystal, porcelain plates, dolls, and German painted wooden plates, porcelain Schuplach dancers, musicians, and the typical beer wagon drawn by decorated horses. Lodge 81 Needville elects 2006 officers SPJST Lodge 81, Needville held its monthly meeting on Sunday, November 20, 2005. At 12 noon, President Vincent Newman gave a prayer of thanks. We had a delicious meal of baked fryers with dressing. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Winnifred Susan for baking the fryers and Willie Mae Kuykendall for making the dressing. It truly was a Thanksgiving feast. We also had a variety of side dishes and desserts provided by the lodge members. Thanks to everyone who brought something.

and dyes that are applied in layers. The dyeing and hand decorating of the eggs, along with the Czech and German costumes, were of much interest to the faculty and students. The West High School Czech Dance Group was also invited to the festivities, and to the enjoyment of all present, were delighted when a group of Trinity Valley Community College students spontaneously joined them in the “Chicken Dance.”

Elaine, Marjorie, and Paula enjoyed this opportunity to visit the campus of Trinity Valley Community College in Athens, and especially thank Jan Huffstutler, Vice President of Instruction, and Elizabeth Starek, Tutor Coordinator, for allowing them to participate in the college celebration of Czech, Polish, and German Heritage Day. He read a thank you letter from Willie Mae Kuban on behalf of her husband, Robert. He also read a thank you from the Arnold Sury family and the Jerry Horak family for letting them

use the hall during their time of need.

Jeanette also said that she would take the case of fruit cocktail to the S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home in Needville.

Bradley Stavinoha asked if our lodge would be interested in hosting the Chamber of Commerce mixer to promote hall rentals and SPJST insurance in March.

Randolph Vernon and Rose (Podrouzek) Scott were married December 22, 1945. Randolph is retired from Dallas Transit System, and Rose operated a home day care center for many years. They have two children, son Kenneth, who is married to Dona, and daughter Anne Cowan, who is married to Steve, and two grandchildren, Scott and Elisabeth Cowan.

The Scotts are active members of Lodge 84, Dallas. Rose serves as the reporter, and Randolph has served as the door chairman for many years. Both still serve on lodge committees.

Daughter Anne is the junior youth leader at Lodge 84.

Sister Wanda Petr reported that a great time was had at the Dallas Ennis Fraternal Council last Monday hosted by Lodge 84. It was great food! And, Wanda won four big baskets of fruit during the drawing— well, no wonder the evening was a big event for her!

Fellowship Day—January 17 On the third Tuesday of the month, the day we call Fellowship Day— which has been very successful and enjoyed by many—included games, eats, and fellowship from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The next Fellowship Day on January 17, 2006. Come!

Congratulations, Flossie!

Congratulations to Sister Flossie Vita. On her last birthday, she reached 96 years and as members, we know what that means—all benefits, no dues. Again, happy birthday to a very nice and faithful member.

It was nice to see Brother Adolph Salac back at the meeting—Sister Evelyn, too. He thanked all for

remembering him during his stay at the hospital and later at home.

Youth report—Sister Bessie Petr said the teens and youth clubs were making favors for the children at the Scottish Rite Hospital. Children will find a handmade surprise on their holiday dinner trays! Plans for Holiday in the Park at Six Flags is scheduled for December 3 at 3:30 p.m.; December 17, a movie is to be enjoyed; and today, they enjoyed pizza—three different kinds!

Cookies and drinks were enjoyed as well. They also are entertaining at the Christmas party on December 11 to delight all who attend, especially the grandparents. It’s on December 11 starting at 5 p.m., dinner at 6 p.m., and the program and a visit from Santa at 7 p.m. Members are asked to bring a side dish and dessert. The lodge furnishes everything else to enjoy during dinner!

Czech Culture Society meets at Lodge 84 on November 28. It was reported by Brother Ben Jarma that a letter was received from Sister Ida Schulz thanking all for help during Heritage Day at the State Fair.

Supreme Lodge President Vanicek was seen enjoying the day as well as a klobase on rye—I think.

Robert asked the members if the lodge would furnish the meat for the Christmas party. It was decided that the lodge would pay for the meat.

Robert announced that it was time to congratulate Jimmy Weidig and present him his plaque for being Fraternalist of the Year.

Tennie, chairman of the by-laws committee, stated that she had received a change to the by-laws.

However, after careful consideration, the committee recommended that the by-laws stay as they are and no changes be made. The by-laws were studied last year, and “all the i’s have been dotted and all the t’s have been crossed.” Unless someone makes another recommendation, the bylaws will stay the same.

The award will be a very nice plaque and may also include a husband and wife on the same plaque.

This is a great way for your lodge to honor those who have given so much of themselves to the lodge and community.

Fraternalist of the Year The SPJST seeks to honor one of our deserving members with the SPJST Fraternalist of the Year Award.

Last year’s winner was Mrs. Bettie House of Lodge 202, Jourdanton.

Your lodge may enter one candidate only. A lodge may indeed submit a candidate who has been previously nominated, but has not yet won, the SPJST Fraternalist of the Year.

One winner and four runners-up will be selected. The winner will then automatically be entered for consideration for the National Fraternalist of the Year. This award is selected by the National Fraternal Congress of America (NFCA).

The SPJST Fraternalist of the Year Award is based on your nominee’s fraternal activities in the past year (2005) only. All fraternal activities (lodge, personal, community, etc.) are relevant. The winners will be honored at the SPJST Incentive Award Banquet in February 2006.

Texas Czech Genealogical Society distributes family history books The book team of the Texas Czech Genealogical Society spent several hours at the Caldwell, Texas, Visitor/Convention Center on Monday, November 28, 2005, getting the Czech Family Histories two-volume set ready for mailing and distribution. There were 214 sets mailed from Caldwell, and team members from Angleton, Austin, College Station, Ennis, and

Temple received the rest of the 500 sets to be distributed in their respective areas. As of December 6, 2005, all of the books ordered have been sold and distributed. TCGS wants to thank each of you who contributed to this project as well as those who purchased the books.

She graduated from Rogers High School in 1965 and received her bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Mary Hardin Baylor. Services for Vaclav Sefcik, 95, of Temple were held Friday, November 25, 2005, at Sheffield Funeral Home with Reverend John Bravenec and the Reverend Frank Simcik officiating. Burial was in Seaton Cemetery.

Mr. Sefcik died Tuesday, November 22 in a Temple nursing home.

His wife preceded him in death on February 2, 2004; and son, Jim Richardson preceded him in death on June 3, 1973.

He was born in Seaton to Paul and Albina Motl Sefcik. He married Martha Lesikar on September 5, 1952, in Seaton. He worked for Parkview Grocery for more than 30 years before retiring in 1981. He was a member of SPJST Lodge 47, Seaton and Evangelical Brethren Church of Temple.

Survivors are son, Randy Sefcik, and sister, Matilda Sefcik, both of Temple; and two grandchildren.

Tyler Sander and Logan Jones led us in the Pledge of Allegiance and the youth club motto. The minutes were read by Secretary Lucas Schoppe.

Kyle Skrabanek gave the treasurer’s report. The charity for this month was to bring a toy for Operation Noel.

November 12 is the District Two Lock-in in Temple from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. All youth are planning to attend.

We broadly discussed the Christmas craft we will do to give to the residents of Elgin Golden Years Nursing Home. We proposed to have a second meeting in November to finish up the crafts in order to deliver in time for the holidays.

The Elgin Fireman’s Light-Up Parade is December 3, and we decided to create our own float with a western Christmas theme (since the SPJST Float was already booked).

November 4 was the set-up day for the garage sale as well as last minute preparations on the 5th. Charlie, E.J., J.B., T.J., and Mikhaila attended both days. There was one space rented, and the youth sold a total of $60.25 with many items still left to sell. At noon, there was also a landscape committee workday to trim and weed the gardens around the hall. Charlie, E.J., J.B., T.J., and Mikhaila, under the supervision of Ray Nelson, made a miraculous transformation of shrubbery.

The youth would like to thank the following people for donating to the youth for the November 5 garage sale. Betty Lynn Meyer Hopper of Elgin donated toys and several exercise machines; Dean Shultz donated a couch; and Bobby Von Minden donated an exercise machine.

Thanks also to the lodge for its many contributions. The youth would also like to thank the following people of the lodge for attending the garage sale—President Mike Mogonye, Vice President Donnie Cannon, Reporter Irene Vrabel, Sales Representative Evelyn Gustafson, Trustee Charlie Wilson, Trustee Johnny Vrabel, and Aleen Jaecks.

Lodge 18, Elgin Youth Club reports on activities Dear Vestnik Readers, The November meeting was held on the 15th. President and Treasurer Sierra and Kayla Cruz were absent as well as Ashley Guerrero. There were seven members present including new member Tray Absher, and three guests present. Charlie Anderson led the Pledge of Allegiance followed by a moment of silence.

We had several topics to discuss for old business.

Sunshine Committee Chairman Brandon Bowen will be sending out thank you cards to those who so graciously donated items for the garage sale on November 5. We also discussed our trip to Six Flags and also talked about committees, chairpersons, and their duties. Charlie Anderson was voted co-chair of the poster/scrapbook committee because that void had not yet been filled.

At the garage sale, we raised $60.25 and an additional $175 within the following week for kitchen equipment. The day of the garage sale the landscape committee also had a workday to clean and trim up the flower beds. Charlie, E.J., J.B., and T.J. Anderson and Mikhaila Nelson attended both the workday and the garage sale. The latest news was of the District Two Lock-in held in Temple. Five members attended and had so much fun.

New business we discussed was scheduling a make-up day for Make a Difference Day (October 22) that we missed. We voted to clean up the yard of Mrs. Nygard, an elderly lady, on April 29; December 3 is the Elgin Fireman’s Light-Up Parade. We will

decorate the day of the parade.

For the Christmas holidays, we are trying to adopt a family from the Advocacy Outreach in Elgin and donate all our food generated by the canned food drive to the family we adopt. The ornaments we will make for Golden Years will be a history of the candy cane with a pipe cleaner candy cane attached. We will deliver the ornaments on December 18 and give our Christmas donations at that time to Golden Years. We will then travel by car to the Elgin Police Department and give our donation to Blue Santa.

We will also have a hamburger fundraiser roughly set for February or May. Fundraiser—June 3, 2006 On June 3, 2006, we would like to host a huge fundraising project. We will continue the garage sale with what we have stored in the youth room from November, have a raffle and bake sale, and be taking orders for Home Interior candles. We will put advertisements in the Elgin Courier for at least three weeks prior to the week of the event and for one month in the Vestnik. It will be stated in the ad that space can be rented out for individuals to sell their products for a small rental fee. All proceeds will go to the youth club.

For the raffle, we have a running list of businesses we plan on asking to donate, but have not yet set what will be the main attraction of the raffle. As a closing for this year, I would like to thank all the lodge officers for their time and support.

On November 25, my two brothers, sister, cousin, aunt, and I went to the movies. We couldn’t go see “Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire,” so we went and saw “Chicken Little.”

It was funny, sad, and cool.
