The audience is all that matters

hristmas is all about family, giving, and . . . parades! The SPJST Float participated in 10 Christmas parades all around the state in the past several weeks. This year’s “magical” float featured almost 4,000 lights, a life-size, gingerbread house with a chimney emitting smoke, candy, lollipops, ice cream cones, cupcakes, and bears mixing up a batch of gingerbread. We estimate the SPJST Float was seen by close to a million people (which includes television and radio audiences and viewers on the streets). Through the cheers, applauds, waves, and thumbs up, we frequently heard shouts of “SPJST”. The float is an awesome piece of advertising.

We enter parades to brighten lives and to bring SPJST into communities.

Many parades give awards, and we are thankful for the ones that we have received. The float received the prestigious Award of Excellence in the BryanCollege Station parade. I was proud to accept the award as a guest on TV Magazine with Sharon Colson which airs on KAMU-TV. Talk about publicity for SPJST! And, although we received the second place award in Temple, we realized the audience’s reaction is all that matters. A picture of the first place float in the Temple parade appears on page 13.

Thanks to everyone who rode the float or walked alongside of it in these parades. Special thanks to “the float crew”: Supreme Lodge Vice President Gene McBride, Communications Assistants Lisa Greger and Katherine Morris Smith, and float engineer/designer David Nauert.

Congratulations, Lodge 92 Hats off to Lodge 92, Fort Worth for its recent contributions to three Tarrant County charities. The lodge sponsored a charity dance in November and raised more than $1,900. That amount was doubled to $3,824 when District Three Director Johnnie Krizan matched Lodge 92’s amount through the Supreme Lodge Directors’ matching funds program. Lodge 92 presented three checks for $1,272 each to Meals on Wheels, Tarrant County Child Protective Services, and Goodfellows. More on page 7.

Reader writes This is just a note to thank you all for the gift I won from the Vestnik office (in the Czech Heritage Month word find activity). It is so pretty and will be taken good care of. I have been a member of SPJST all my life and am also proud of all my six children who are all members.

Lodge Letters Section Lodge 1 Fayetteville members celebrate Christmas SPJST Lodge 1, Fayetteville held its annual Christmas party on Saturday, December 3, 2005, at 5 p.m. beginning with social and fellowship. A meal consisting of turkey, ham, and dressing provided by the lodge followed. Members brought a variety of side dishes and desserts which made it a very delicious meal that was enjoyed by all.

The SPJST Lodge 1 Youth Club sang Christmas carols, and Santa Claus made his visit to present the gifts to the children. A drawing was held from the list of registered guests for the lovely poinsettia table decorations.

SPJST representatives attending the party included District One Director Donnie Victorick and wife Janice and District One State Field Representative Bill Orsak.

Lodge Karel Jonáš No. 28, East Bernard meets January 8

Dear Members, The first meeting of 2006 for Lodge Karel Jonas will be Sunday, the 8th of January, at 2 p.m. in the Community Room of the East Bernard Branch Library, 746 Clubside Drive.

Besides the regular reports, the agenda will be open to business needing immediate attention.

As to the fare for the fraternal hour buffet luncheon, it will be the usual one.

The December meeting on the 11th started off well. After convening the meeting and opening ceremonies, a recess was called for the luncheon. Grace was given by Glenn Kaminsky.

Santa Claus (aka “Tony” Kelner) came to spread good cheer, and he gave everyone a candy cane.

This was the last meeting that Brother Everett Kaminsky, FAC, attended as a member of Lodge 28 for he has transferred to another lodge closer to his new home in Wimberley.

We wish him well, and an open invitation to visit has been extended.

Lodge 29, Taylor presents tarok tournament results The 20th Annual Lodge 29, Taylor Tarok Tournament was held December 3, 2005, with 32 competing players.

The winner was Denisse Wuensche of Taylor with a score of 842. Second place honors went to Ed Vacek of Schulenburg with an 800. Third place was taken by Johnnie Bartosh and fourth place by Allen Bartosh, both brothers from El Campo. Johnnie had a high round of 295. Fifth through 10th places were taken by Hilda Demel and Forrest Dittrich, both from Schulenburg; Evelyn Scaff of Fort Worth; Travis Mixon of Yoakum; Alton Demel of Schulenburg; and Allen Tschoerner of Schwertner.

It was a beautiful day filled with good players and a wonderful meal of spaghetti and other side dishes prepared by the staff of Lodge 29. Lodge 32, Victoria announces new meeting location Attention Members and Friends, Please note that Lodge 32, Victoria will now meet at the downtown 1st Victoria Bank location in the Town Hall Meeting Room. Lodge 40 El Campo Hillje reports on December meeting President Ardis Bacak called the Lodge 40, El Campo-Hillje meeting to order at 1:20 p.m. There were 62 members and 11 guests present. The Pledge of Allegiance was recited, and a moment of silence was observed for the deceased members and ill in the

community. Roll call showed all officers present, and all trustees present, except Allen Bacak.

Secretary Debbie Sczech read the minutes from the November 13, 2005, meeting. A motion was made

by Sheldon Holub to accept the minutes with a second by Lorraine Kana.

Motion carried. Please note: The November, 2005, minutes should reflect that there were nominations and seconds on the election of officers.

Communications were read by Secretary Debbie Sczech. This included thank you notes from Doris and Calvin Phiel for working at the community Thanksgiving dinner and from Cheryl Toblar for her son’s scholarship; Christmas cards from Louise School and Ganado Telephone Company; a letter from Boy Scouts of America; a letter from the SPJST Library, Archives and Museum thanking everyone for their donations and support.

The treasurer’s report was prepared by Lorraine Kana.

FAC Dee Floyd thanked everyone for bringing a dessert. She also presented the 2006 kitchen workers’ list for the members.

The audit committee had no report.

Youth Leader Jennifer reported that the children colored Christmas pictures and that the youth are planning a social for the month of January. The youth leader will mail reminders to the youth members about the social and meeting.

The nominating committee consists of Chairman Betty Sanders, Charlie Sanders, and Diana Seaman.

The bingo committee had no report. Sheldon reported there will be no bingo on the following dates in 2006: January 2, May 29, July 3, September 4, and December 25. He

Josephine Bacak reported the snack bar sales were $525.70, expenses were $85.65, and the deposit was $440.65.

Hall Rental Chairman Tria Svatek reported a booking on January 13 and 14. A letter was received from Wharton County College about holding its election at our hall. They will inform us later. Tria also reported additional bookings in the months ahead.

Cemetery committee Vlasta Bartos, the roof committee, and the barbecue cook-off committee had no reports.

The mowing committee stated that the yard did not need mowing.

There was no report from the resolution committee.

Trustee Ben Svoboda built a new pump house. He furnished all the labor and supplies free of charge.

New members welcomed to the lodge were Hunter Koudela, Meagan Smith, Jason Smith, and Edward Kollaja.

Sales agents gave their reports.

There was no old business.

Under new business, Sheldon made a motion to give Mr. Moore, our neighbor, a gift card from HEB for his help with the water. The motion was seconded by Tria Svatek, and it carried.

Also, Raul Flores was paid for his services. We thanked Rudy Laitkep and his band for the holiday music.

Upcoming events at our lodge will be the next meeting on January 8.

Our guests were Supreme Lodge Secretary-Treasurer Lanita Anglin and her husband, Charles. Sister Anglin installed our new 2006 officers and was our guest speaker. She encouraged all the members to attend the SPJST Awards Banquet in February.

No Bake - Bake Sale We will again have our annual No Bake - Bake Sale starting January 1 through February 1, 2006. The total proceeds will be divided among the following organizations—SPJST Education and Nature Center, SPJST Library, Archives and Museum, and Texas Czech Heritage and Cultural Center. Thank you to all who have supported the past six drives.

Our congratulations go out to our youth leader, the former Frances Klanika, who tied the knot and is now Frances Nelson (Anthony).

Frances and Anthony are both ag teachers at two rival schools. We wish you both the best.

Lodge 133 San Antonio donates to church Members of Lodge 133, San Antonio met on November 20, 2005, for our annual Thanksgiving luncheon.

After a delicious turkey dinner, complete with all the trimmings and delicious desserts provided by the members, President Popp conducted the meeting.

We wish the best to Alvin Schmicek who is now in assisted living in San Antonio at 1618 South St. Mary’s while he is recovering from a stroke. We also wish the best to Mary Popp who is recovering from a broken ankle. We miss you both.

Congratulations to those who celebrated wedding anniversaries. Jim and Shirley Burrows celebrated their 25th; Cecil and Sophie Hull celebrat-

ed 59 years; and Ed and Pat Keller, 24 years.

A Christmas luncheon will be held on Sunday, December 18. The lodge will supply ham. Members and guests are asked to bring a vegetable or a casserole and a dessert. Lunch will be served at 12:30 p.m.

In keeping with our charitable status, the lodge donated $150 to Good Shepherd Lutheran Church. We meet in the hall for our meetings, and everyone is always so hospitable.

Lodge 139 Danbury elects 2006 officers SPJST Lodge 139, Danbury held its meeting at Filipp’s Cafe in Danbury on Wednesday, December 7, 2005, with 19 members present. The meeting was called to order by President Lonnie Lostak.

A silent prayer was held for Shirley Filipp. Shirley passed away November 25 at her residence in Danbury. Please keep her family in your prayers.

Officers were elected for the coming year. All present officers were re-elected by acclamation. A memorial committee was elected to serve for the coming year. The committee includes Ellamarie Filipp, Helen Filipp, and Monty Baldwin.

Apply now for scholarships Lodge 160, San Angelo will provide six scholarships this year for college students who are members of the lodge. Only Lodge 160 members are eligible to apply. They must currently be enrolled at a college, university or institute of higher learning. The funds will be sent to the school and disbursed to the student upon enrollment as a full time student. Lodge 92, Fort Worth Gives $3,824 to Local Charities

Joining hands and making a difference during the holidays The Christmas holiday season is all about giv-

ing and sharing, and SPJST Lodge 92, Fort Worth knows the season well.

At its annual Christmas dance on December 4, 2005, Lodge 92 members presented almost $4,000 to three Fort Worth charities.

The lodge raised $1,912 at its annual charity dance held November 6 at National Hall (SPJST Lodge 92) in Fort Worth. District Three Director Johnnie Krizan then matched that amount through the district director’s matching funds program, increasing the lodge’s donation to $3,824.

Lodge 92 selected three organizations to each receive $1,272: Meals on Wheels, Tarrant County Child Protective Services, and Fort Worth Star Telegram’s Goodfellow Fund. The lodge is proud to assist these organizations in reaching their missions.

Meals On Wheels, Inc. of Tarrant County provides hot, nourishing meals to elderly and disabled persons who are unable to prepare meals for themselves. The meals, daily contact by caring volunteers and professional case management allow frail, homebound persons to remain in their own homes

Every year, passionate community advocates find themselves gathering around a troubling issue. That passion can focus on children who are being neglected and abused. The Tarrant County Youth Collaboration supports the development and implementation of initiatives needed to meet the needs of Tarrant County children and youth.

The mission of the Fort Worth Star Telegram’s Goodfellow Fund is to provide clothing and shoes for Tarrant County school-age children during the holiday season. Designed to serve underprivileged children throughout Tarrant County, including Arlington, the fund is the oldest and most respected local holiday fund in the community.

Lodge 92, Fort Worth believes in giving and sharing throughout the year. In September, the lodge donated $150 and 254 pounds of food to the Tarrant Area Food Bank, which works to eliminate hunger in Fort Worth, Texas, and 13 surrounding counties by providing food, education and other resources to partner agencies and their communities.

Thanks, Lodge 92 for making a difference in the Fort Worth community. Congratulations on your fraternal spirit.

Lodge 183 Honors Fraternalist of the Year

Congratulations to Lodge 183, Arlington Fraternalist of the Year Raymond Mikeska.

fellowship continued during a festive Christmas party that preceded the lodge meeting. Even hearty appetites could not consume the food and goodies that were prepared and brought.

This was indeed a fitting way to celebrate the approaching end of the year and the sacred holiday of Christmas.

This is a time of the year when many celebrate the blessings of the past year mixed with reminders for those who have suffered losses of loved ones.

We were very happy to see several new faces mixed with the old regulars.

New faces tend to bring extra energy to a group. We were indeed honored to have among our guests District Two Director Bobby Wuensche and his lovely wife, Ruth. Although they are—in every sense of the word—our regulars, it seems proper and fitting to specially recognize our faithful members, Supreme Lodge Vice President Gene McBride and Frances.

Since all good things must come to an end, the time came for the party to end and the meeting to begin. Vice President Dan Ferguson presided and opened the meeting with the Pledge of Allegiance.

Secretary-Treasurer Linda Roming presented the minutes and the treasurer’s report, and both were unanimously approved. FAC Dan Ferguson asked that everyone give him individual reports of fraternal and community service acts as well as donations and other charity work.

New members accepted were J. R. Santana, George W. Pavelka, Jr., and Holda Figueroa.

Supreme Lodge Vice President McBride informed us that the SPJST Home Office will match lodge donations to the Salvation Army for hurricane victims. Thus, a $200 Lodge 200 donation to the Salvation Army will be matched and will magically turn

Lodge 202 Jourdanton reports on Christmas party into $400.

District Two Director Wuensche gave us a detailed report on sales standings and informed us that our lodge has made our quota. We are currently in the silver category, needing only about four members to move up one category for a larger bonus.

Lodge 200 Scholarship Secretary-Treasurer Roming reminded the members that Lodge 200 will be awarding a scholarship to a deserving Lodge 200 graduate meeting the qualifications and selection.

She presented an updated scholarship application listing requirements and qualifications.

Election of Officers Prior to beginning the election of officers, Linda Roming informed us that she would not be a candidate for the secretary-treasurer’s position.

Linda served us faithfully in that position some eight years, and the membership expressed deep appreciation for her years of service. Monica Ferguson declined nomination for youth leader and was thanked for several years of service in that position.

The election of officers was conducted, and the following members were elected: President Allen Trigg Vice President Dan Ferguson Secretary-Treasurer Nancy Deviney Reporter Leonard Mikeska The lodge will actively seek to fill the position of youth leader.

Next Meeting—January 4 The next meeting of our lodge will be held on Wednesday, January 4, 2006, at 6:30 p.m.

Lodge 202, Jourdanton held its Christmas party on Sunday, December 11, 2005, at the Jourdanton Community Center with 60 members and guests present. President Jeff Barta welcomed everyone. The Pledge of Allegiance was recited followed by a moment of silence for the deceased members.

President Barta presented SPJST State Fraternalist Bettie House a certificate from the National Fraternal Congress of America. The certificate was in appreciation for Bettie’s outstanding volunteer service and recognition for excellence in the support of America’s Fraternal Benefit Societies and for being among the top fraternal volunteers in North America.

Congratulations to Michelle House who received two third places in essay and art contests at the Texas Fraternal Congress’ annual meeting.

Celebrating birthdays in December are Martha Ciomperlik, Melba Novosad, Domingo Gonzales, Jr., Brenda Gonzales, Veronica Barta, and Jesse Huizar. Gilbert and Elsa Bazan celebrated their 27th anniversary on December 1.

President Barta recited the table prayer. A feast of chicken, side dishes, and desserts were enjoyed. The Chinese gift exchange was the highlight of the afternoon.

After the party, a sizable group of adults and youth traveled to Pleasanton to present canned foods and gifts to ACCEPT to benefit the less fortunate of the county. The youth also had the opportunity to wrap gifts.

Next Meeting—January 8 The next meeting will be the second Sunday, January 8, 2006, because New Year’s Day is the first Sunday.

Rosie Steinman said she spoke with Anna Johnson who sent greetings and asked everyone to keep Christ in Christmas.

Everyone enjoyed singing Christmas carols led by St. Thomas Choir Director Kevin Smith. Other guests were Father Sal, Father Gerald, the church secretary, the Sister, and another church employee.

A luncheon of ham and other wonderful dishes was enjoyed. Rose Ann read the story of the candy cane and presented each one with a candy cane which was enjoyed by all.

Wilma Stell’s only grandson, Aaron Mills of Burkburnett was married on August 9 with the reception being held in Wichita Falls. His dad was the best man. Tracy Horn felt privileged to be invited and told of a wonderful time being held by all.

Ima Lou Crider reported her husband is doing much better. Kathy Ormsbee missed being with us as she was having some tests done. We wish all goes well for her.

Lydia Alholm and I enjoyed attending the Dallas Circle of Czech Women’s Christmas luncheon. We certainly enjoyed the meal of pork roast, sauerkraut, dumplings, green beans, and salad. It was so good, and it was especially nice to visit with old friends.

I have been busy attending family activities. I recently traveled to the Pizza Hut Park in Frisco to attend the soccer game in which my nephew, Chris Kosarek of Waco, played. This is a new, huge soccer park and is right at the end of the Dallas Parkway in Frisco. Of course, according to the internet directions, it was not all that easy to find, but I did finally get there. Good news is, my nephew’s

team won, and it was a lot of fun to visit with him and his family. On the way home, we stopped by St. Joseph’s Village in Coppell to visit with my aunt, Ann Patril. The visit was so nice. I also attended the winter band concert in Mansfield to see my niece, Christine Kosarek, play.

This past weekend, I traveled to Nacogdoches to attend the graduation ceremony of my nephew, Eric Morales, from Stephen F. Austin University. Eric graduated with a major in horticulture and a minor in forestry. It was a fun weekend. I guess you can tell I am most proud of all my nieces and nephews.

The next meeting will be January 5, 2006—weather permitting. Don’t forget your little gift for the exchange and a food dish. See you then.

Gloria, our president, announced this would be a short meeting because we wanted to party! Since we did not have a meeting in November, we sang “Happy Birthday” to them as well as the December celebrants.

We had 45 people attending, and three of them were guests, Eileen Kercho, Lydia Alholm, and Ed Scaff.

Albert Kubala and Vern Borde passed out goodie bags to everyone as a gift from Lodge 92. Thank you.

Joyce Tesar urged people to make reservations for the New Year’s Eve dance.

Gloria reminded everyone that we will have a CPR demonstration at our January meeting.

The meeting was adjourned so we could play Mr. Wright to exchange gifts. It was a lot of fun with Joe Kozel doing a good job leading us in the game.

After the game, we had a delicious lunch with Mary Ann Kozel, Pauline Brownlee, Bessie Ellsworth, and Evelyn Scaff as hostesses.

After lunch, we played bingo.

SPJST Holiday Open House

he SPJST Home Office welcomed the Christmas season on Monday, December 5. Music, refreshments, children’s activities, and horse-drawn carriage rides were all part of the event. Miss Texas Morgan Matlock and SPJST State Queen Rachel Hunter of Lodge 25, Ennis led the crowd in singing favorite Christmas carols.

Downstairs, the museum came to life with several areas featuring men and women who shared their life experiences. The traditional Czech Christmas tree and the SPJST Youth Christmas were on display. The Holiday Open House is an annual event that is SPJST’s gift to its members and the Temple community.

The officers and membership of Lodge 40, El Campo-Hillje wish to express the sincere sympathy to the family and friends of ANNA FRANCES BUCHANEK. Anna Frances Buchanek, 95, of El Campo passed away December 10, 2005. She was born December 29, 1909, in Bila Hora, Texas, to the late Joseph and Frances Foyt Marek.

She was married to the late Leo A. Buchanek. She was a homemaker and baked often for people in her community.

Anna is survived by daughters Lavon Sanders and husband Larry of El Campo, Linda Polasek and husband Billy Joe of El Campo, Ramona Ryan and husband Bobby of Corpus Christi; son Bill Buchanek and wife Beulah of El Campo; grandchildren Lynne Janke, Leah Supak, Deanna Herrmann, David Buchanek, Becca Polasek, and Bobby Jack Polasek; six great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by parents, husband, five sisters, and three brothers.

Visitation was Monday, December 12 at Triska Funeral Home. Funeral services were held Tuesday, December 13 at 2 p.m. at Christ Lutheran Church with the Reverend Art Weiss officiating. Burial followed at the Garden of Memories Cemetery under the direction of Triska Funeral Home.

Pallbearers were Bob Polasek, David Buchanek, Paul John Herrmann, Steve Janek, Tim Supak, and Matt Janke.

Honorary pallbearers were Becca Polasek, Kristen Supak, Katie Herrmann, Lauren Herrmann, Kory Supak, and Jenna Janke.

Memorials may be made to Christ Lutheran Church.

Arrangements were under the direction of Triska Funeral Home.

Resolution Committee, Betty Sanders Karen Holub Janet Marek —SPJST—

We, the undersigned Resolution Committee of SPJST Lodge 88, Houston, Texas, and on behalf of our entire membership, wish to express our sincere and heartfelt sympathy to the bereaved family of our departed member, NATIVIDAD “NAT” P. GONZALEZ, age 77, who went home October 16, 2005.

He served as Blue Room bartender at SPJST Lodge 88, Houston for over 30 years. He retired from Grocers Supply in 1991. Nat served in the United States Army during the Korean War. He was a member of the American Legion Post 0560 and SPJST Lodge 88 for many years.

The family was his main concern in life, even over his own health. He touched the lives of many and will be missed by all.

He is survived by his wife, Barbara Linney Gonzalez; daughter, Olga Assed and husband Jed; stepdaughter, Michelle Wockenfuss and husband Jerry; grandchildren, Alexis and Courtney Assed, Nicholas Gonzalez, Allison, Keith, and Ashley Wockenfuss; faithful companions, Spot and Skeeter; sisters, Virginia Cisneros and husband Al, Beatrice Gabino, Vita Gonzalez, Paula Trejo and husband Eddie; brothers, Joe Gonzalez and wife Carol and Richard Gonzalez and wife Mary; sisters-inlaw, Bernice Gonzalez, and Karen Giddens and husband Leon; brothers-in-law Martin Munez and Charles Chemnitz and wife Wanda; father-in-law, Charles, Sr.; along with numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitation was from 4 to 8 p.m., Friday, October 21 with a rosary at 7 p.m. Funeral services were held at 10 a.m., Saturday, October 22 in the chapel of Woodlawn Funeral Home.

Interment followed at Woodlawn Cemetery.

Donations may be made to the Kidney Foundation; Diabetes Association; or the SPJST Lodge 88 Scholarship Fund.

Expression of Sympathy We, the members of Lodge 23, Moravia, express our deepest sympathy to the families of our departed sister, PEARL M. HOHENSEE, age 85 of Hallettsville, who died Friday, December 2, 2005, in Floresville.

She was born January 23, 1920, in Fayette County to Albert Otto and Rosalie Ehler Hohensee. She was a retired school tax collector for Hallettsville Independent School District and a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Hallettsville.

She was also a member of the Catholic Daughters of the Americas, the Texas Retired Teachers Polio Survivors Association, Inc., and SPJST Lodge 23, Moravia.

Survivors include sister Virginia Zook of Floresville and brother Calvin Hohensee of Wharton.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Visitation began at 2 p.m. Sunday, December 4 at Kubena Funeral Home in Hallettsville. Rosary was recited at 6 p.m. at the funeral home.

Services were held at 2 p.m. Monday, December 5 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church with the Reverend John Peters officiating.

Burial, under the direction of Kubena Funeral Home, followed in the Sacred Heart Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Ronald Hohensee, Randy Hohensee, David Hohensee, Jarred Hohensee, Vernon Hohensee, and David Ehler.

Expression of Sympathy We, the members of the Resolution Committee of Lodge 84, Dallas, and the entire membership, wish to express our sincere and deepest sympathy to the bereaved family of our departed lodge sister, EMILIE MAREK. Emilie Marek was born on July 8, 1929, in Telico, Texas, and died Friday, October 21, 2005, at Charlton Methodist Hospital in Dallas. She

was 76 years old. Her parents were Joseph and Emilie Chmelar Slampa.

She was a graduate of Crozier Tech High School in Dallas in 1946, where she prepared to be a hairdresser. She had a beauty salon on Beckley Avenue in Dallas before she married.

She married Richard Fitzhugh in 1950 at St. John’s Catholic Church in Ennis, and they lived in DeSoto. She and Richard ran a grocery store, Big M Number 2, in DeSoto for many years. They had four children, Stephen, who died shortly after birth, Marie, Gregory, and Rick.

She was an honorary lifetime member of the DeSoto ISD PTA, and she was an officer in the local Red Cross during the era of the Vietnam War. Richard Fitzhugh preceded her in death. She became a real estate broker for Century 21 and sold houses in the Dallas County area.

In 1981, she married Frank Marek at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Lancaster. They enjoyed traveling to Europe, Hawaii, Colorado, and across the country.

They moved to Frank’s family farm in Buckholts, Texas, and lived there until Frank’s death in 1993. She enjoyed gardening and learning to paint while living on the farm. She also volunteered in the office of St. Monica Catholic Church in Cameron.

After Frank’s death, Emilie moved to Duncanville, and for awhile, worked part-time in real estate for Myers and Chambers in DeSoto. She was an office volunteer for St. Joseph Catholic Church, and was active in the ministry to the poor, the St. Vincent de Paul Society, SPJST Lodge 84, KJZT, and the POLKA association. She was also a corresponding secretary for WFLA until her illness.

Throughout her life, she enjoyed polka dancing and music. She could speak and read Czech, and was interested in Czech heritage and history She is survived by sister Shirley Slampa of Fort Worth; brother Robert Slampa of Hollis, Oklahoma; sons, Greg Fitzhugh of Duncanville and Rick Fitzhugh of Cuero; daughter Marie Parks of DeSoto; and grandchildren, Michael Crabtree of Hawaii, Christopher Crabtree of DeSoto, Hila Marie Lewis of New Mexico, and Joseph Fitzhugh of Duncanville.

Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated by Father Mark Seitz on Tuesday, October 25 at St. John’s Catholic Church in Ennis. Interment was in St. Joseph’s Cemetery in

Ennis. A reception at the KJT Hall in Ennis followed interment.

Memorials may be made to the St. Vincent de Paul Society of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Waxahachie.

Resolution Committee, Cheryl Petr Justine Yeager —SPJST—

Expression of Sympathy We, the undersigned Resolution Committee of SPJST Lodge 88, Houston, Texas, and on behalf of our entire membership, wish to express our sincere and heartfelt sympathy to the bereaved family of our departed member, DELPHIN JAMES “D.J.” MOTAL, age 83, who passed into eternal rest on Friday, November 18, 2005, at Memorial Herman Northwest Hospital after a brief illness.

He was a Czech country boy born on December 25, 1921, in Moulton, Texas, to Mary Geiger and Oldrich Motal. D.J. was a veteran of the United States Army from World War II. He and his wife, Alice, owned Motal’s Maintenance in Houston for 40 years. D.J. was a loving and dedicated husband of 58 years. He and Alice enjoyed many years square dancing with Crescent M. Group in Houston and surrounding communities. The family domino group became an extended community in Houston and New Braunfels where he, his wife, and children shared many happy times. He enjoyed his membership in SPJST Lodge 88, Houston, KJT, Knights of Columbus, and St. Ambrose Men’s Club for many years.

D.J. is survived by his loving wife, Alice Mares Motal; children, Robert Motal of California, Gloria Hummel of Michigan, Gary Motal, Yvonne Andrews, and Rosemarie Midleton of Houston; grandchildren, Matthew, Kassidy, Lindsay, Kendall, Kristin, Kelsey, Jermeny, Peyton; and sister, Marie Krejci of Cuero.

The family received friends on Sunday, November 20 from 6:30 to 9 p.m. with a recitation of the Holy Rosary at 7 p.m. in the Chapel of Pat H. Foley. A funeral mass was celebrated on Monday, November 21 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Ambrose Catholic Church, 4213 Mangum, with

Reverend Benjamin Smaistrla as celebrant. Rite of Committal followed at 6:30 p.m. in Sts. Cyril and Methodius Catholic Cemetery in Cistern, Texas.

Resolution of Sympathy We, the undersigned Resolution Committee of Karel Havlicek No. 4, Hallettsville, Texas, on behalf of our entire membership, wish to express our sincerest and deepest sympathy to the bereaved family of our departed lodge sister, ANNETTE LEONITA NOVAK, age 86 of Hallettsville, who passed away in Hallettsville Rehab and Nursing Center on Tuesday, November 22, 2005.

She was born on January 20, 1919, in Hallettsville to Mary Netardus Strauss and Leo Joseph Strauss, Sr. On July 30, 1940, she was united in marriage to Joseph P. Novak in Hallettsville.

Mrs. Novak was employed at the family-owned newspaper, The Hallettsville New Era Herald and later at The Hallettsville Tribune-Herald. Her sister, Molly Pesek, reported local news under the byline Molly’s Corner, and Mrs. Novak continued the column after her sister’s death in 1986 under the byline, “Town Chatter.” Through the column, she shared birthdays and local happenings and in her way, provided good news to all who read the paper.

Mrs. Novak was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Catholic Daughters of America, KJZT, American Legion Auxiliary, and Hallettsville Garden Club.

Throughout her life, she gave her time and boundless energy to those in need.

Survivors include sons, William J. Novak and wife Joan of Long Valley, New Jersey, and Robert E. Novak of Hallettsville; three grandchildren; and two great-granddaughters.

She was preceded in death by beloved husband of 59 years; parents; sisters, Molly Pesek and Edith

Expression of Sympathy We the Resolution Committee of Lodge 79, Corpus Christi, on behalf of our membership, wish to express our deepest sympathy to the family of our departed brother, ALBERT SVATOPOLSKY, age 85, who passed away on December 12, 2005.

He was preceeded in death by his father, Albert C. Svatopolsky, and his son, Charles Svatopolsky.

He was born in Kansas but grew up in Corpus Christi. He was a beloved husband and father, and a kind and gentle man. He was known as “Swatty.” He served proudly in the Navy during World War II. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Helen Svatopolsky; sons, Daniel (Marsha) Svatopolsky of Corpus Christi and Ronald (Jo Ann) Svatopolsky of Atlanta, Georgia; grandchildren, Dean (Dana) Svatopolsky, Joy Watt, Darren Svatopolsky, David Svatopolsky, Susan Brian Svatopolsky, Svatopolsky, and Tyler Cubells; and great-grandchild, Leighann Svatopolsky.

Private services were held.

She was born May 19, 1923, in Lavaca County to Mary Margaret Pargac.

On September 3, 1941, she married Alfred Joe Vaculik in Moravia.

She was a member of Ascension of Our Lord Catholic Church in Moravia; Altar Society; KJZT; SPJST Lodge 23, Moravia; and several other organizations, Survivors include sons, Alfred J. Vaculik, Jr. and Earl J. Vaculik and wife, Mary Ann, all of Houston; and grandchildren, Bryan and Curt Vaculik.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Alfred Joe Vaculik, Sr., on June 12, 1994; and her mother.

Visitation began at 2 p.m. Monday, November 28 at Kubena Funeral Home Chapel in Hallettsville.

Following, a rosary was recited at 7:30 p.m., services were held at 2 p.m., Tuesday, November 29 at Ascension of Our Lord Catholic Church in Moravia. The Reverend John Peters officiated. Burial, under the direction of Kubena Funeral Home, followed in Moravia Catholic Cemetery. Pallbearers were Ronald Klekar, Dennis Klekar, Patrick Klekar, Curt Vaculik, John Wallace, Jr., Ronald Vaculik, and Michael Klekar. Honorary pallbearer was Bryan Vaculik.

Mr. Veit is preceded in death by his parents; and brother, Robert Veit.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 56 years, Annabel Veit; sons, Raymond Veit and wife Karen, Frankie Veit and wife Wanda, Richard Veit and wife Janice, and Paul Veit and wife Nancy; brothers, Dennis Veit and Lawrence Veit; sisters, Georgie Kloessel and Margie Nevlud; 12 grandchildren; four greatgrandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Mr. Veit was very generous with his time and talents in church activities. He loved dancing, playing cards, and fishing. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

Youth Letters Section State Youth Director outlines 2006 activities Dear Youth Leaders, I really enjoyed my first holiday season as your State Youth Director. I had the opportunity to play one of Santa’s helpers, attend lots of Christmas parties, and participate in all four of the new lodge chartering ceremonies. The weeks leading up to Christmas and the New Year are a great time of the year for family and fraternalism. Thanks for all that you did to make a positive difference in the lives of our youth this holiday season.

Temple Christmas Parade and SPJST Open House This year’s Temple Christmas Parade and SPJST Open House were a wonderful success. The SPJST Float won second place in the parade, and a good time was had by all! Members of the SPJST State Royalty court rode in the parade and afterwards joined in on the fun at the SPJST Open House.

May 6, 2006 — Join Hands Day The SPJST is making a big push for all of the adult lodges and youth clubs to get involved in Join Hands Day in 2006. Make sure to set aside May 6 on your SPJST calendar. Join Hands Day can be a really great way for your youth club and adult lodge to work together on a special project in 2006.

Challenge 2005 The SPJST had another good year with recruiting new members. The incentive awards will be presented at the SPJST Awards Banquet to be held at the Killeen Convention Center on Saturday, February 25, 2006. In order to help us determine which youth clubs will qualify for the incentive awards, I have sent each youth leader a one-page attendance summary for the month of December. Please, at your earliest convenience, take a few minutes to complete and send or email it to me. As you may know, in the past, the incentives were calculated on the basis of your quarterly attendance reports (November through November). This should give us a

Youth Club Photos Needed for the Awards Banquet Youth leaders, please take notice and mail or email a photograph of your youth club on or before January 27 for the presentation that will be made at the SPJST Awards Banquet on February 25. It can be a fun photo, action photo, or group shot. The main thing is that we want to be able to have your lodge pictured. The photo will be displayed on screen when your youth club receives its incentive awards. The President’s Challenge Over the next year, our youth program and Vestnik projects will be geared to providing information on getting in shape and learning how to participate in one or more of the President’s Challenge programs. Our Core Challenge program will tie in nicely with this emphasis. The President’s Challenge is a program of the President’s Council on Physical Fitness and Sports and the U.S. Department of Health and Human

Services.

A letter and booklet pertaining to the The President’s Challenge was enclosed with the youth leader’s packet. Please make sure to hold on to this information and know that we will be covering it in detail at the youth leader’s workshop on March 4.

Additional booklets for each of your youth club members are available through the Youth Department at 50 cents each. The President’s Challenge enables participants — boys and girls as well as adults — to participate in a wide range of activities and earn recognition for their efforts.

LIT Retreat The 2006 LIT Retreat will be held on June 2 through 4 at YMCA Hamman Ranch in Bandera, Texas. Youth Leaders Workshop The youth leader’s retreat is tentatively scheduled for March 4. Plans are for the program to start on that Saturday at 10 a.m. and conclude Sunday morning around 10 a.m.

Lodge 6 Cottonwood Youth Club delivers cakes Dear Readers, President Christi Sparkman opened the meeting by having Whitney Dobecka say the Pledge of Allegiance. Everyone then recited the youth club motto. Our guests were District Three Youth Counselor Bessie Petr and the District Three Assistant Youth Counselor Lynda Novak.

The rest home cakes were brought for the birthday party on Wednesday, December 6. The Christmas gifts will be taken to the West rest home on December 18 at 2:30 p.m. and to the Bellmead nursing home on Saturday, December 17.

The January meeting will be held January 17 at 1:30 p.m. We will also take down the Christmas tree.

I think this poem is very meaningful and would like to share it with everyone: The Legend of the Robin’s Gift On Christmas night so long ago As winter winds began to blow Mary struggled to warm her Child, So small and new, so meek and mild.

While it may sound fantastic for me to make this claim, I really feel that I’m composed of each remembered name.

And while you may not be aware of any special link, Just meeting you has changed my life much more than you may think.

For once I’ve met somebody, the years cannot erase The memory of a pleasant word or of a friendly face.

So, never think my Christmas cards are just a mere routine Of names upon a Christmas list, forgotten in between.

Lodge 6 Cottonwood youth thanks Christmas dinner cooks Dear Readers, At the meeting, Youth Leader Peggy Dobecka handed out the sheets for the SPJST Camp Tee Shirt Design Contest. She also reminded those with scholarship applications need to complete them and have them postmarked by February 1.

On Sunday, December 3, we were served a delicious Christmas dinner by the cooks of the lodge. We sure do thank all of them. We then had a short Christmas program and waited on Santa’s arrival. After he left, we

all received a Christmas bag of goodies, and we exchanged gifts.

Get active! It’s simple advice but it can be one of the most important things you can do to improve your current and future health. In 2006, the President’s Council on Physical Fitness and Sports celebrates its 50th anniversary. The program was founded in 1956 by President Eisenhower.

Over the next year, our Vestnik Cross Training projects will be geared to providing information on getting in shape and learning how to participate in one or more of the President’s Challenge programs. To improve your fitness level and your chances of meeting the standards of the President’s Challenge, follow these principles of exercise: Frequency, Intensity, Type, and Time (F.I.T.T.)

FREQUENCY Set up a regular schedule for exercising. Try to accu-

mulate at least one hour of activity daily with more vigorous workouts three to four days a week. You are likely to see improvements when you exercise regularly and have a schedule for exercise. Also, you are more likely to continue those workouts when you have an exercise schedule.

INTENSITY For your muscles to get stronger or your body to get fit,

you must work harder when exercising than when you are at rest. Your heart should beat faster and your breathing should increase when you are performing aerobic exercise and when you are lifting weights. Make sure you work harder when you are exercising, but don't overdo it. Lifting too much weight or working out too hard can cause injuries.

Lodge 25, Ennis youth enjoys Christmas party Dear SPJST Readers, I went to the December SPJST Lodge 25, Ennis Youth Club meeting and Christmas party. At the meeting, we made Christmas ornaments with holly leaves, acorns, fir branches, bath salt, and pine cones. I liked rolling the pine cone in the bath salt.

I got a small Santa as a gift.

At the Christmas party, Santa visited. I sat on his lap, and I got a sack of goodies. My sister was very, very scared of Santa, but she still got a bag of goodies! I had a good time at the party! I played with my friends, Amanda, Faith, Seirra, and Tori. I can’t wait until Christmas!

Lodge 84, Dallas Youth Club reports on November meeting The Lodge 84, Dallas Youth Club had its November meeting on Monday, November 21, 2005. We made candy corn decorations for the patients at the Scottish Rite Hospital.

The decorations were cute stand-up figures.

We discussed events which were upcoming. On December 3, District Three met at Six Flags for Holiday in the Park. The youth members performed a program at the Lodge 84 Christmas party on December 11.

We are making plans to get together and see a movie for the December social. We will discuss this more at the December meeting which is on Monday, December 19 at 6:30 p.m.

All members should attend the meeting and vote for their movie choice.

Lodge 186 Caldwell Youth Club plans bowling social Dear Vestnik Readers, On December 11, 2005, Lodge 186, Caldwell Youth Club had a meeting. We discussed old and new business. We scheduled a lock-in, but it was cancelled.

After the meeting, we practiced Christmas songs to sing for our adults for the adult meeting.

We are going bowling on January 8, 2006, for our next meeting.

Lodge 186 Caldwell youth enjoys Christmas meeting Dear Vestnik Readers, On December 14, 2005, Lodge 186, Caldwell had an adult meeting.

We ate roast beef, potatoes, green beans, corn, rolls, etc. We all had a moment to light candles for those who had passed away. We also drew names to get Christmas presents.

Then, we all talked and had a good time.

The meeting was then adjourned.

Lodge 246 Morgan’s Point youth leader excited about new year Dear Youth Members and Family, I hope each and everyone of you had the opportunity to see the SPJST Float in the Temple Christmas parade. It was a beautiful sight!

As your new youth leader, I am looking forward to meeting each and every one of you within the next couple of months. Lodge 246, Morgan’s Point has more than 50 current youth members. Youth ages of these children range from six to 16 years old. I

VĚSTNÍK strongly believe that with this many active members, Lodge 246 can be one of the largest and best youth clubs within the district.

SPJST is a fraternal organization and on a district level, we have summer camp, skating parties, swim parties, and lock-ins, and the SPJST also offers scholarships.

During the past year, Lodge 246 did outstanding at the District Two Youth Achievement Day and achieved some first place finishes in the State competition.

Next Meeting—January 8 You are invited to the next youth club meeting on Sunday, January 8, 2006. This monthly meeting will be held at Lone Star Banquet Hall, locat-

ed at 1695 Morgan’s Point Road in Morgan’s Point. This will be a very special meeting for all youth members. We will conduct elections for all youth club offices and discuss youth club committees, i.e., New Ideas, Scrapbook, Photography, Poster. I hope to see you and your family at this important meeting.

The New Year used to be a more important holiday before it became overshadowed by New Year’s Eve festivities. For many Czechs, New Year’s Day is just a welcome day off they can use to cure themselves from overindulgence.

New Year’s Eve is a party day. On the New Year’s Eve table you will find the Czech open-faced sandwiches chlebíčky of various kinds, nuts oříšky, crisps (or chips) brambůrky and other snacks. The midnight is traditionally celebrated by drinking champagne šampaňské, or rather some local brand of sparkling wine šumivé víno, also known as sekt.

Instead of lentils, some families cook broth — vývar with semolina — s krupicí — as a symbol of money.
