A Golden Valentine Anniversary

Dorothy Stuchly Achieves 50 Years of Service

An anniversary is a special occasion especially when it occurs on Valentine’s Day. And, it’s rare when it’s a golden anniversary . . . especially when it relates to working at the same company for the past 50 years when the average tenure length for U.S. employees is around 4.6 years. SPJST Accounting Assistant Dorothy Stuchly surpassed that average number almost 11 times! On January 20, 2016, SPJST honored Dorothy Stuchly for 50 years of service with a luncheon at the SPJST Home Office. Sister Stuchly of Lodge 47, Seaton received her 50-year plaque from Supreme Lodge Chairman Donnie Victorick, Supreme Lodge President Brian Vanicek, and her supervisor, Financial Secretary

Roy Vajdak. The luncheon was attended by Dorothy’s husband Ray, sister Doris Tyroch, Home Office staff, Supreme Lodge members, former Executive Assistant to the Financial Secretary Linda Johnson, and Honorary Financial Secretary Jerry Mikulas and wife Betty. Sister Stuchly signed on to work with SPJST on February 14, 1966, when the Home Office was located in The Professional Building in downtown Temple. Dorothy vividly recalls how her legacy at the SPJST Home Office began when then-Financial Secretary Ben Zabcik stopped by the Tyroch family’s home to see if Dorothy or her twin sister Doris was interested

On the photo of Lodge 25, Ennis’ bus trip in 1964, pictured on page 16 of the January 27, 2016, Vestnik, here are more identifications: Kneeling, left to right, third boy is Gary Kudrna.

Little girl on the ground, fourth from right is Karen Kudrna. Next to her, third from right is Glenn Kudrna. They are all children of G. Louis and Dorothy Kudrna. The baby G. Louis is holding is son Chris Kudrna. Fifth boy from left in middle row is Mike Kudrna. Fourth boy kneeling from right is Greg Kudrna. They are sons of Frances and Joe Kudrna. I think the lady in the middle row, second from right, is Helen Vrla. Hope this helps. I will let you know if I recognize anybody else. Dorothy Kudrna Lodge 25, Ennis —SPJST—

Dear Ms. Zavodny, I am writing you in response to the picture in the Vestnik originally published January 6, 2016, and then again on January 27, 2016. I have been meaning to get this out to you but procrastinated until I saw the names of the youth club members from Lodge 25, Ennis. I am a member of Lodge Jaro No. 130, Dallas, and I am in the picture along with my mother, Helen J. Vrla, youth leader and my brother, Danny E. Vrla. I will identify some of the Lodge 130 Youth Club members that I can recognize. The back row, first on the left is David Podhrasky, third from left, next to James Strunc, is Joe Prevratil. Fraternal Bowling Tournament: February 13 in New Braunfels Jane Novak. Then, going back to left on the second row after Frances Jo is Barbara Sneed. (Barbara is now Barbara Nesuda, married to David, who is Dorothy Kudrna’s - of Ennis brother.) I think next to Barbara is Karen Mikulec, and the boy in the second row, I believe, is Mike Kudrna. Then, me, Kathy Vrla, now Pottkotter. The boy in the glasses is Eddie Oates. And then on the far right, second to last in that row is my mother, youth leader of Lodge 130, Helen J. Vrla, and then right of her on the end is Eddie’s mother, youth leader of Lodge 130, Helen Oates. On the far right, the boy on the end in a plaid/checkered shirt is my brother, Danny E. Vrla, then, go left on that bottom row, the girl on her knees with a headband and arm up with hand on her head is Anne

Oates, daughter of Helen Oates. The boy on the very end of the bottom row in a checkered shirt, I think is my cousin, Daryl Parma. I believe this was in the mid-60s, and Nick Morris used to be a member of our Lodge 130 - even president before he moved on to West, and then Temple. I recognize some of the others but cannot remember their names. I do enjoy reading the Vestnik just to keep up with what’s going on. VĚSTNÍK

Brian Vanicek announces candidacy for President Dear Brothers and Sisters, Thank you for your kind support and for having allowed me to serve you as Supreme Lodge President. I’ve enjoyed working with you, SPJST Home Office staff, and my fellow officers and directors in redefining the Society’s presence and stature as a proactive, member-oriented fraternal benefit society. In 2016, SPJST remains financially strong and fraternally vital with many aspects of our fraternal program having achieved national acclaim for excellence. With your support and vote of confidence, it would be my great honor to once again serve you as President and continue to advance the high ideals of fraternalism. SPJST remains a time-honored institution constructed on the idea of addressing human needs. As noted in our SPJST’s vision statement, “Our vision is to provide a wholesome family environment; to encourage cherished Czech traditions; and to provide high-quality, competitive life insurance for our members.” The key to achieving a strong SPJST for future generations is that we build on that solid foundation and remain relevant in the lives of our members. SPJST’s accomplishments in recent years are well-documented in the annual financial statements of the Society and in the pages of our Vestnik. Additionally, many silent improvements have been made to our back office operations, enabling SPJST to improve upon and — in some cases — correct internal operating procedures. SPJST’s Investment Policy Statement and Enterprise Risk Management procedures implemented in recent years put the Society ahead of the curve in terms of its ability to anticipate and head off a multitude of investment and operational risks. Even with the significant progress that has been made, SPJST department heads and staff remain vigilant on all fronts and continue to work together to ensure that our fraternal order remains a relevant force for good in the lives of our members and in the communities that we serve. I will continue to leverage my 33 years of fraternal and banking experience in partnering with my fellow officers, directors, and lodge leaders to make a positive difference. I currently serve as President of the Fraternal Alliance of Texas and am the past President of the American Fraternal

Alliance State Fraternal Alliances Section. I received my bachelor’s degree in journalism from the University of Texas in 1983 and my General Lines Insurance License in 2000. Thanks to the foresight of my parents, I have been an SPJST member for 56 years and am past President of SPJST Lodge 24, Cyclone. From a membership and insurance growth perspective, I believe that our brightest future resides in our ability to grow organically — out of our existing lodge structure — and through the implementation of a thoughtful program of servicing the insurance needs of our devoted base of members, their immediate as well as extended families, and friends. This is an idea which has taken root; however, more needs to be done in this area, specifically, in identifying qualified new sales agents and then providing them with the necessary tools — training and continuing education — necessary to keep them at the top of their game. Thank you to those SPJST sales agents who have worked diligently in recent years to put solid new business on the books. On the fraternal front, SPJST takes its fraternal commitments seriously. What a gratifying experience it has been for me to lend oversight and support to SPJST and its fraternal missions in lodges and locales throughout our great state, including SPJST’s multi-faceted youth program. My sincere thanks to the many of you who have contributed to the writing of this success story. There is always something positive and uplifting taking place or about to happen! On March 11, for instance, the dedication the Fort Hood November 5th, 2009 Me-

morial — a project spearheaded by SPJST — will take place in Killeen. Later this spring, watch for the fledgling SPJST Foundation to emerge and begin its work in earnest to administer to the support and development of the Czech Heritage Museum and Genealogical Center in Temple and the SPJST Education and Nature Center at Cooper Farm in Ledbetter. Democratic principles empower SPJST members on the lodge, district, and state levels and allow them to participate in the decision-making processes of the Society. Therein resides the foundation of our diverse and dynamic Society. As that relates to the recommendations of the SPJST Special Structure Committee which appeared in the September 9, 2015, Vestnik, I favor the document’s key components, including provisions that continue to provide for the statewide election of the Supreme Lodge President and the Editor/Director of Communication. Those are important provisions. Additionally, delegates would continue to vote to elect their district directors as well as deliberate and vote upon changes and/or amendments to the by-laws. On a related note, I can see the merit of establishing an SPJST Oper-

9

ations Manual — apart from the bylaws. In addition to providing for a detailed summary of each department head’s responsibilities and obligations, the great practicality of the operations manual resides in that it would designate the Supreme Lodge with the responsibility of updating the manual as necessary and to remain compliance with all applicable state and federal guidelines as they arise. The life insurance industry is a heavily regulated business, and it remains in the best interest of the SPJST to comply with any and all state and federal statutes. My past 12 years as President and the preceding 12 years as Vestnik Editor/Director of Communication have been a labor of love. Throughout most of my adult life, advancing the interests of SPJST has been my passion and my life’s vocation. As a result, my family has been blessed with a lifetime of fraternal experiences and personal relationships as near and dear as any blood kin. For that, we are grateful. Thank you for your continued support and for your commitment to the high ideals of fraternalism! Fraternally, Brian Vanicek, FIC —SPJST—

David C. Pechal announces candidacy for Vice President Dear Brothers and Sisters, I, David C. Pechal, am pleased to announce my candidacy for the position of Vice President of SPJST Supreme Lodge. I am a lifelong member of Lodge 47, Seaton Star Hall in District Two. SPJST is very dear to my heart, and my experience in SPJST proves my love for the SPJST organization. I grew up living next door to Lodge 47 and live within 10 miles of the Home Office in Temple, Texas. I have been married for 26 years to my wife Tammy, and we have been blessed with two children, son Jerry and daughter Amber and son-in-law Ty Ryan. I believe in the core values of fraternalism and commitment and know they go hand in hand to make a successful organization. My experience and duties in the local lodge includes:

• Former Vice President • Current and active sales agent • Delegate for Conventions in 2008, 2012, and 2016 • Elected auditor • Planning and Improvement Committee • Maintenance Committee - Chairman • Fundraising Committee - Chairman (one night raises 18 to 20 percent of the hall’s net income for the year) • Scholarship Committee • Former Bar Manager • Former Treasurer • Lifetime Achiever Award • Lodge Fraternalist of the Year Award • Created Facebook page • Attend monthly lodge meetings • Help with kitchen, picnics, and cookoffs • Highly involved, (co-leader) in the development of the new pavilion, planning, and construction • Organized local fishing trip for Getaway in Corpus – now a statewide event • Active Adult Lodge Member • Youth club member between the ages of 6 and 17; served as reporter and sergeant-at-arms; only missed two meetings

As an active member, I meet and exceed all requirements of Article 26 (a), to be an elected officer of the Supreme Lodge, which reads as follow:

an additional certificate that I purchased in August 2014. In addition, my involvement and active membership meets the following guidelines: SPJST By-Laws from the 31st Convention in 2012 under Definition and Observing By-Laws:

Article 1 (g) The word “premium” shall mean the payments made to the Supreme Lodge on the insurance in force.

(h) The word “dues” or “assessment” shall mean money collected by the local lodge for the administration of its affairs.

(a) Be an active member of this Society for at least five consecutive years prior to this election. • Active Lifelong Member

(b) Shall continue their active membership during the tenure of their office.

• I will continue supporting my local lodge and all lodges in the state. (c) Is present at the convention or has an excuse acceptable by two-thirds of the delegates for not being present

• I have served in the past two conventions, 2008 and 2012, as a delegate, and I have been elected as a delegate for the 2016 Convention. (d) Have knowledge of both the Czech and English languages.

• I may not speak fluent Czech; however, I appreciate, honor, and cherish the language. I actually understand more than I speak.

(e) Is a citizen of the United States of America at the time of election. • I was born in Temple, Texas, on September 30, 1965.

(f) Must have at least $50,000.00 of insurance or if uninsurable, then an annuity in at least the amount of $20,000. Such insurance or annuity to be with SPJST. • Yes, I have my original certificate, purchased at birth by my parents and

(i) The word “active” shall mean a member who is still paying premiums, dues and assessments, if any.

Local Lodges Article 43 (c) Members who have their certificates paid up in due course, according to the terms thereof and who wish to remain active members, must pay the local lodge dues and assessments if any as prescribed by the lodge to which they belong, payable annually.

Being active in SPJST is a family tradition for my family. My wife, Tammy, was a former youth leader and board member in our lodge. Our daughter, Amber, was an active youth club member where she held many officer positions. She attended district camps and was first runner-up for State Queen in 2004. Our son, Jerry, was an active youth member where he also held many officer positions. He attended annual district camps and served as 2012-2013 State King. My father, Jerry, was a past lodge president. My mother, Dorothy, was reporter for the lodge and past curator of the Czech Heritage Museum. My brother, Edwin, is current president of our local lodge and serves in many valued roles as a lodge leader. My sister, Joyce, is the current youth leader. I support and am proud of my family’s tradition and involvement in our lodge and SPJST. This serves only as a thumbnail print of how truly involved and supportive we are. We, as a fraternal organization, need to stay on track with the plans that our founders in 1897 planned for us; that is to be fraternal. This is what sets us, SPJST, as being the best fraternal organization in this great state of Texas. We must continue to have strong work ethics while maintaining our fraternal values. Corporate America is not the

VĚSTNÍK

direction the SPJST organization needs to follow. One of my favorite quotes is, “A goal without a plan is just a wish.” – Unknown. Below are several key points and my plan for achieving these goals. Goal—To enhance the Gold Star Award

Plan—The lodges that reach and meet all requirements of Gold Star will be awarded a reasonable financial incentive. As we all know, it takes money to operate our lodges. By offering this financial incentive, lodge involvement and membership participation will be increased.

Goal—Enhance communication with field managers, directors of the Supreme Lodge, sales agents, and local lodges.

Plan—Implement weekly calls and reporting of sales, as well as any other concerns pertaining to the Insurance Department. I plan to improve communication by sending all local lodges a monthly sales report with goals and charts for their lodge. I plan to also create a tracking system for all agents to help them with their sales goals. Goal—Increase new sales agents.

Plan—Prepare and present information to all lodges. This will give the necessary education and provide the needed tools to empower qualified, professional sales agents from within the current society.

Goal—Rework the current application process.

Plan—Develop a consolidated application process and then educate all agents throughout the state on an improved system. This training will also include sales techniques with ongoing professional development training. In closing, I would like to include a quote from my son Jerry’s State King winning speech, “I believe we should stand together on the foundation that our ancestors set for us, and stand strong in our heritage.” I remain optimistic and will work tirelessly to maintain our traditional values and high standards. Thank you for your time and your consideration by voting for me as SPJST Vice President. Fraternally yours, David C. Pechal —SPJST—

Leonard Mikeska announces candidacy for Secretary-Treasurer It is with enthusiasm that I announce my candidacy for Secretary-Treasurer of the Supreme Lodge. Your support to reelect me to this position will be greatly appreciated. When I asked for your support four years ago, I discussed the challenge of continuing our turnaround to profitability and recovery of surplus. We have continued to enjoy extraordinary success by adding an average of near $1 million per year to surplus over the past seven and onehalf years since I returned to manage our investments in 2008. The past four years have been a season of change not only dealing with investment management but in other areas as well. Many changes have been implemented to improve our technology and to enable us to better respond to our rapidly changing environment. One major new change was the development and implementation of an Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) policy. Regulators, rating agencies, and auditors now expect an insurance company to have an effective ERM policy. I do appreciate the Board giving me the responsibility of Chief Risk Officer (CRO) to continue integrating our ERM policy into our operation to help us manage operational, underwriting and investment risk. Our primary ERM Committee and the three subcommittees are now fully functional to help us determine areas of challenge that must be mitigated. I do want to review a brief history of my service with the SPJST. After serving eight elected terms on the Supreme Lodge (32 years), I retired in 2000 and remained active in the leadership of my local lodge. During this time, I finished my college degree and pursued a career as a group benefits consultant with a national marketing organization. A few months prior to the 2008 convention, I responded to requests to seek election to the position of secretary-treasurer. Since that time, the SPJST portfolio of investments has been repositioned to match the cash flow needs and quality needed by an insurance company. We are back on track and have increased our surplus from near $13 million to near $20 million. A few highlights of my qualifications include a bachelor of science degree, an FIC designation, a Texas Insurance license, past president of the

Texas Association of Fraternal Insurance Counselors, past president of the Texas Fraternal Congress, and Chief Risk Officer of SPJST. I have near 40 years of experience managing insurance company investments and assets, mortgage loan administration and policy servicing. Additionally, I have well over 40 years of experience in corporate administration and various aspects of life insurance company management. I love the SPJST and feel that I have the qualifications and experience to meet the challenges that face us. Some of those challenges are declining membership, the need to increase our premium income and continued efforts to improve our technology. I want to be a part of the management team that will meet these challenges and others. On a more personal note, my wife, Dorothy and I have enjoyed traveling the state and meeting many of you over the years. Her support has been vital to me in serving you. We would welcome the opportunity to continue serving you the next four years. I would be remiss if I did not comment on the outstanding management team now in place. I have served on the Supreme Lodge some 40 years and am in a position to say that we have a quality team in place, both officers and directors. I have nothing but the highest regards for officers Brian, Clifton, and Roy and Melanie, our editor/director of communication. Your consideration and support to reelect me will be appreciated. Fraternally, Leonard Mikeska —SPJST—

Melanie Zavodny announces candidacy for Věstník Editor/ Director of Communication Dear Members, It has been 103 years since Brother Frank Fabian edited the very first Věstník on September 1, 1912. The first paragraph of that issue starts out with (translated from Czech): “A word to the brothers and sisters of SPJST. To you, our beloved SPJST membership, I bring you the first issue of the Věstník, a new organ (newspaper) supporting the Slovanské Podporující Jednoty Státu Texas, as approved by the delegates at the Sixth Convention. And with this, I intend to do to the best of my knowledge and power. We were given all the details of this task and intend to follow in the direction like it was intended.” Today—more than 5,150 Věstníks later, we continue with those same intentions of promoting effective and regular communication among all parts of our fraternal organization. What an amazing feeling it must have been then - just as it is now - to write, capture, define, and preserve SPJST’s proud history through the pages of the Věstník filled week after week with rich heritage, fraternal spirit, and cherished traditions. With excitement and passion for SPJST, I proudly announce my candidacy for Věstník Editor/Director of Communication. I very much look forward to continuing to serve as your Věstník Editor/Director of Communication. If reelected, the Věstník and promoting SPJST will continue to be my top priorities. I will continue to work with the Supreme Lodge, Home Office Staff, and our members. The Věstník is the tool that bonds all of our members in all departments at all levels throughout SPJST. It is the voice of the membership and the entire organization. My first experience with the Věstník was serving as a youth club reporter when I was about nine years old. Each month, I wrote letters to the late Věstník Editor Rudy Sefcik. Rudy and his wife Maxine’s encouragement combined with seeing my letters and photos in print, inspired me to develop an interest in writing and photography. From 1994 to 1998, I worked as Communication Assistant in the Věstník Department assisting then-Věstník Editor Brian Vanicek with the Věstník each week. From 1998 to 2004, I served as State Youth Director. One of my proudest accomplishments as State Youth Director was increasing the program from

11

26 active youth clubs in 1999 to 53 active youth clubs by 2004 while tripling youth club membership and participation. In 2004, I was elected Věstník Editor/Director of Communication by delegates at the 29th SPJST Convention. I was reelected in 2008 and 2012. Designing and editing the Věstník each week are highlights of the Věstník Editor/Director of Communication position. Other tasks include designing and maintaining SPJST’s website and social media sites, marketing brochures and materials, promotional flyers for lodges and youth clubs, SPJST’s annual calendar, and the Convention Souvenir Book. Other publications include Member Services Directory, Youth/Summer Spectaculars, Treasured Memories, Youth Program Salute, Insurance and Annuity Extra, and various special features inside the pages of the Věstník. To salute SPJST’s 115th anniversary and the Věstník’s 100th anniversary, a 700page cookbook was compiled, designed, and edited by the Věstník/Communication Department. All proceeds from cookbook sales benefited the Czech Heritage Museum and SPJST Education and Nature Center. The Věstník/Communication Department also coordinates the annual SPJST Car Show in the spring that attracts more than 200 show cars and hundreds of spectators. This promotional event and Czech Heritage Celebration is also a fundraiser for the Czech Heritage Museum and SPJST Education and Nature Center. Additional accomplishments will be outlined in the Publication Committee’s pre-convention report that will

be published in May. To recognize the Věstník’s 100th anniversary in 2012 and to preserve SPJST’s history, the Věstník/Communication Department partnered with Texas Czech Genealogical Society (TCGS) to scan all available past Věstníks since 1912. Through another partnership with the University of North Texas, the archived Věstníks have been digitally stored in a permanent, searchable online database - the Portal to Texas History for all to access for historical and genealogical research. The archived Věstníks can be viewed through the SPJST.org website. My husband David Nauert and I have enjoyed designing and maintaining SPJST’s two floats and preparing them for about 30 parades each year where they promote SPJST, its fraternal programs, life insurance products, lodges, and youth clubs throughout the state.

I am a third-generation and lifelong SPJST member. I participated in all youth club activities and received first runner-up State Queen and first runnerup Miss SPJST. I served as president of the Texas Fraternal Congress Youth Section and youth leader and reporter in my local SPJST lodge. I also represented the state as Miss Texas Czech and received first runner-up in the Miss Czech Slovak US pageant. In 2010, I was honored with the prestigious Marcia D. Heywood Memorial Fraternal Communications Award from the American Fraternal Alliance. I currently serve on the advisory council of the American Fraternal Alliance Fraternal and Communications Section and participate in annual and mid-year meetings and workshops that present opportunities for learning and networking with fraternal industry leaders, editors, and communicators. The Věstník holds the distinction of being the only weekly

Dear Members and Delegates of District Six, With appreciation for our SPJST organization and all membership, I announce my candidacy for reelection for District Six Director. It has been an honor and sincere pleasure to serve you all as your representative in this capacity and for our SPJST society during the past three and one-half years. Thank you for your support and confidence in me. As a member of Lodge 30, Taiton, our SPJST society is an extremely important part of my life. Joining this great fraternal organization in 1966, I felt that special excitement and pride that fellow SPJST members have as I recently saw my name listed in the January 27 issue of the Vestnik as a 50-year SPJST member! As most of you know, I grew up in the SPJST youth club environment. Special memories include winning first place in junior group talent at State YAD singing “Corn Cockle Polka.” There were many years of youth club activities, summer camps, and youth achievement days. I continued service to the SPJST Youth Program through the years by serving as assistant youth leader and youth leader for Lodge 30 and also Assistant District Six Youth Counselor and then District Six Youth Counselor. In our adult lodge, I served as president and vice president. I feel blessed to be living the exam-

ple of what SPJST’s youth program teaches—to learn about SPJST and serve the society as an adult. My leadership in SPJST transitioned in 1998 as I became a sales agent for SPJST. Then, a couple years later in December 2000, my leadership was taken a step further upon my employment as a State Field Representative. Throughout the District Six area, from 2001 through 2012, I assisted agents and members and carried out Insurance Department sales programs and initiatives. During a number of those years, I also assisted with Districts Five and Seven managing approximately 250 agents. I believe I achieved success through my 12 years as State Field Representa-

newspaper among all fraternals currently operating in the United States and Canada. That feat is certainly admired among sister fraternals. In our spare time, David and I enjoy helping our local lodges. I serve as secretary/reporter for Lodge 246, Morgan’s Point. We also founded, organized, and chartered Heart of Texas Corvette Club in 2012, and I served as the club’s first president. I also volunteer on the City of Temple Christmas Parade Committee and was recently honored as the Temple Parks and Recreation Department Special Events Volunteer of the Year. We are also members of TCGS. I graduated with honors from Rogers High School, Temple College, and Southern Career Institute. I have completed communications, journalism, and business courses through the University of Texas and University of Alabama. I also have a General Lines Insurance License and am a Fraternal Insurance

tive for our society and have taken that additional experience and have expanded upon it these past three and onehalf years as District Six Director. Serving you as District Six Director has been very rewarding. I have worked hard to be diligent in using my experience and knowledge along with being open-minded to hearing all information at hand towards making my decisions for the best interest of SPJST. I have truly enjoyed you all over the District Six area through lodge meetings, membership drives, socials, fundraisers, member honorees, sales agent meetings, float appearances, youth activities, district meetings, and our District Six Cemetery Organization. It is very fulfilling to see the fraternal atmosphere of SPJST throughout our district and all of SPJST. I have attended the national annual meetings of the American Fraternal Alliance in 2013, 2014, and 2015. These annual meetings have seminars and programs that give us additional and necessary board development avenues through educational opportunities and responsibilities. We have learned through this the importance to modernizing governance structures and being able to manage compliance requirements in our society. I have served on the audit committee of the SPJST Supreme Lodge in 2013, 2014, and 2015. I am presently serving as chairman for 2016. I was voted in by my fellow board members as Supreme Lodge Vice Chairman for 2015 and again for 2016. I am a member of the Wharton County Czech Heritage Society, TCGS, Catholic Daughters, KJZT, and

Counselor (FIC). Democracy is an important part of SPJST on all levels - local lodge, district, and state. Our members are most important, and it is their voices that have guided our Society for 119 years. As a fraternal organization, we are very unique - and our members have continuously been involved in the aspects of SPJST - especially as it relates to the Věstník. I support the Special Structure Committee’s recommendation of continuing to elect the Supreme Lodge President and Věstník Editor/Director of Communication. This is very important in order for our membership to preserve its voice in SPJST. God bless SPJST and our membership. I will greatly appreciate your continued support and confidence in me as Věstník Editor/Director of Communication. Fraternally yours, Melanie Zavodny, FIC —SPJST—

the Taiton Community Center. I am president of St. John’s Altar Society, a Eucharistic minister, and CCD teacher at St. John’s Catholic Church in the Taiton parish. I represented SPJST on the Texas Association of Fraternal Insurance Counsellors board and served as president in 2013. My husband Leroy and I recently celebrated our 40th wedding anniversary and reside in Taiton, Texas. Our children and grandchildren are SPJST members. Our SPJST organization is quite extraordinary! We must continue to share our life insurance, fraternal areas, and youth programs with everyone. We must always cherish and promote our Czech heritage and treasured beginnings; but we must also move forward and embrace change for the best of our society. Please know your Supreme Lodge is dedicated to doing the best for all of SPJST. I will strive to make a difference for the good of our society and continue to work hard to assist in leading SPJST through the future. I believe SPJST is moving forward together to meet the challenges and opportunities and fulfill its responsibilities to continue on as the best fraternal insurance society. If you have any questions or if you wish to contact me, please call me 979332-1616 or email k-kaspar@hotmail.com. I will appreciate your support and vote at this year’s convention. in a job at the Home Office. The Tyroch and Zabcik families were longtime friends. “I remember it was wintertime and cold weather on the day when Mr. Zabcik came by. He asked me to come in on Monday, which happened to be Valentine’s Day.” Dorothy graduated from Rogers High School in 1965. After graduation, she began working at Terry Ferry’s department store in downtown Temple. Her experience with SPJST actually started prior to her employment. Dorothy’s parents purchased a life insurance certificate for her and sister Doris when the girls were two months old. Her mother’s family was from Taylor, and she remembers attending dances and other activities at Lodge 29, Taylor at an early age. Dorothy was also asked by then-Lodge 47, Seaton Youth Leader Vlasta Divis to represent the lodge in the royalty contest. She presented a speech and was selected first runner-up in the District Two Queen competition. She also met her husband Ray at a Lodge 29, Taylor May Fete.

Dorothy replaced Ann (Chlapek) Wolf at the Home Office, and the department consisted of Mr. Zabcik, Jerry Mikulas, and Dorothy. “I could see Sears Roebuck from the room where we worked in The Professional Building in downtown Temple,” she says. Her desk was right next to Jerry’s desk and Mr. Zabcik’s desk. “We all three shared one phone,” she points out, “and we were all in the open so everyone heard all the conversations.” Dorothy reminisces about the old Home Office building. “There was food downstairs, and some floors were rented out to real estate brokers and other businesses like Ruben Marek, Mr. Talasek, a Mr. Brodie, a barber shop, and even Lastovica Jewelry.” She recalls that the building had several floors, and the employees took their coffee breaks on another floor from the one that they worked on. Dorothy looked forward to walking over to V and M Drug Store which was near SPJST’s building to buy vanilla malts. “Those were such good times in that building . . . we even ate dinner in the director’s room (which was the board room).” Dorothy worked at SPJST before computers were introduced at the Home Office. “I typed all of the information on a typewriter.” She precisely

describes the process that included a white sheet, two yellow sheets, and a pink sheet. She typed the names of members who owed premiums and whether they paid monthly or annually. She says she used flags of different colors to signify the month that a member was to pay the premiums. “I remember going to Seaton Star Hall with my parents to pay our premiums at the lodge. Payments didn’t come to the Home Office. Members paid at

their lodges.” The process later changed, and computers were added to the Home Office operations. “That was like learning a new job,” Dorothy recalls. “Everything was totally different.” “From the time she started in 1966, her job description changed 100 percent in 1980 because of the introduction of computers,” Honorary Financial Secretary Jerry Mikulas, who retired in 2010, states. “Dorothy gradually worked into the cycle and became successful in what she did. She may have been a little reluctant at first, but she got right into it and did quite well.” Albeit seeing Dorothy’s good workmanship, then-President Edward L. Marek approached Dorothy later on in 1966 to inquire if sister Doris might be interested in a job at SPJST. “It was really nice when we were both on at SPJST,” Dorothy says. “We were always close, but when I really think about it, that’s when we became really close . . . it’s just a bond that formed when we both started working together at SPJST. Being twins is much more different - and special - than just being sisters!” The twins rode to work together something they still often do - with another set of twins from their commu-

nity. “When we started working together, Doris and I rode with the Brenek twins who had government jobs downtown,” Dorothy shares. “We were dropped off at Seaton Church and met them there. SPJST let off at 4:30, and we had to wait for the Brenek twins for a half hour so Doris and I sat on benches by the barber shop.” “Dorothy was always punctual,” her past supervisor Jerry Mikulas says. “I never had to worry about her not

being there or not being there on time. She always completed every assignment; and quite often, Dorothy gave up her coffee breaks to make sure the accounting cycle got started each day. And, another thing about Dorothy, she never complained. She always did the work and went right along with it. I always enjoyed working with her. As a supervisor, I never worried about her . . . she always did her work.” Dorothy says that she has tried to get along with everyone in the office.

“There have been lots of employees through the years.” She says she still keeps in touch with a few past employees and sees them occasionally. She enjoyed the camaraderie and the good times in the department - especially when Pat Geistman was an employee. “We worked good together, and Pat always kept us laughing.” Dorothy was married in 1974, and she remembers Jerry Mikulas and Pat Geistman helping her with her wedding. “They took the candelabras back

She worked for Financial Secretary Ben Zabcik from 1966 to 1976; Financial Secretary Jerry Mikulas from 1977 to 2010; Interim Financial Secretary Debbie Dohnalik from 2010 to 2011; and Financial Secretary Roy Vajdak from 2011 to present. cial Secretary Roy Vajdak, is amazed with Dorothy’s 50 years of service. “When you get to know Dorothy, you discover that her longevity at SPJST is due to her love for SPJST and her desire to see SPJST continue to flourish.” He adds that it is evident in her customer service skills. “She is always willing to assist our members. She is a primary contact for members that need to change addresses and phone numbers or wish to transfer to a different lodge,” he says. She is the first step in the processing of members’ insurance payments. “Dorothy very accurately opens the mail and assembles the daily deposits so our members can be rest assured that their payments are correctly applied.” He says that Dorothy is also willing to assist any other employee who needs help. “I am very proud to have Dorothy as a member of my staff.” Dorothy and husband Ray will celebrated their 42nd wedding anniversary on June 22. They have one daughter, Kayla, who is married to Richard; one son, Kris; and four grandchildren. In her spare time, Dorothy enjoys gardening, and she stays busy with all of the cooking and other chores around the house. She and Ray enjoy their grandchildren, and they attend Temple Bible Church. Dorothy also enjoys spending time with her “best friend” - twin sister Doris. So will the sisters retire together? “We haven’t even discussed it,” Dorothy smiles. “I always say that when it’s our time to go, we want a double funeral!” Special thanks to Sister Dorothy for her tenure and service to SPJST, and best wishes on her golden anniversary. “It doesn’t seem like 50 years,” Dorothy adds. “The years went by very fast.” —SPJST—

TCGS celebrates Czech Gems and Treasures at annual meeting

The Texas Czech Genealogical Society celebrated its first 15 years as an organization at its annual meeting on Saturday, January 30, 2016, at the

Caldwell Civic/Visitor Center in Caldwell, Texas. The theme was “Czech Gems and Treasures.” In the year 2000, six like-minded individuals, including Charlene Hurta, Patrick Janis, Reverend John Gantt, Sally and Wayne Wendt, and Sylvia Laznovsky organized the society. Sixty-one charter members joined them and began the work required to evolve into a premier genealogical so-

ciety, striving to carry out its motto, “A genealogical society founded by Czech genealogists dedicated to helping you with your Czech genealogy.” The group has a great deal to be proud of, including publishing 18 books, publishing a quarterly publication, in full color, that has won awards at state competition, hosting seminars and events that are always top-notch according to those in attendance, and

helping Czechs research their Czech genealogy. One of the reasons for the success of the organization is the dedication, hard work, and support of its members, especially its charter members. The Charter Members were honored at this meeting. They represented the Czech Gems mentioned in the meeting theme, and our ancestors represented the Treasures. After a time of visiting over ko-

Speakers for the day’s event were, left to right, Jana Vaculik Riley, Frank Kalbac, Laura Doskocil, and Leslie Gerik Nelson.

The Kovanda Band entertained everyone with a great performance.

Four TCGS awards were presented by President Charlene Hurta. LEFT PHOTO: Shirley Ischy, left, was presented the Editor’s Award for her outstanding contributions of articles for the Ceske Stopy. laches, coffee, and juice, the jampacked day began. The first speaker was Jana Vaculik Riley from West, Texas, a proud first generation American. The title of her presentation was “Hope, Hardship and Faith – Life of the Czech People before Immigration.” Recalling the hardships that our ancestors experienced, causing them to leave everything familiar to them, including family, to come to this great land set the tone of Jana’s most interesting presentation. They certainly must have had much hope and faith to take such a giant step to try to make a better life for their families. After arriving in America, new inventions and innovations began to come about. One of those was the Cotton Gin. Frank Kalbac, the second speaker, discussed cotton ginning in the 1900s and showed an interesting video of one such gin in Burton, Texas. This presentation resulted in many questions from the audience. Shortly before lunch, Laura Doskocil, CFO of Snook’s Slovacek Sausage Company, gave a short history of the company. Almost no one in attendance realized that this company is shipping sausage internationally, and in just a few weeks will ship its first order to Dubai. Slovacek’s was the caterer of choice for this special event. Attendees enjoyed a delicious lunch of grilled chicken breast, sauerkraut and sausage, buttered potatoes, green beans, and assorted cakes. During the lunch break, time was spent bidding on items on the silent auction table and shopping at the TCGS Gift Table where its newest publication, Pilgrims for Hope, Volume II was available for purchase for the first time. This book covers immi-

gration from the Czech villages of Frenstat pod Radhostem and Trojanovice in southern Moravia, the area where many Czechs who settled in central Texas came from. A short business meeting was held after lunch, with President Charlene Hurta presiding. The main item at this meeting was the election of Frank Kalbac as vice president. On a lighter note, Charlene asked four trivia questions about TCGS, and four lucky people who answered the questions received gift cards as prizes. Gladys Valcar, TCGS Secretary, presented Charlene with a small gift as appreciation for her hard work, leadership, and vision for the organization. Four TCGS awards were then presented by Charlene. Shirley Ischy was given the Editor’s Award for her outstanding contributions of articles for the Ceske Stopy; Leslie Gerik Nelson received the Member of the Year Award for her work as TCGS Facebook and Social Media Manager. Nancy Machu received the President’s Award for handling the gift shop duties, packing and transporting those items as needed for the various events that TCGS participates in, and working twice a month in the Office/Library/Museum since its inception.

Edwin Hlavaty received the Outstanding Excellence Award for his constant support of TCGS over the years, going far above expectations. The last event of the day was the much anticipated performance by the Kovanda Czech Band from Houston. The smooth sounds of this group were a very fitting ending to a satisfying and informative day. —SPJST—

Remoska is a small electric portable oven with heating from over. Its main part is a cover with a built-in electric resistance heating wire, a glass round window and holes for escape of a dump. This cover was supplied with aluminum tops of sundry depths (afterwards to the sizes of baked grocery). The heat radiates up from the cover and is also led on walls of the top (do not go to burning from down). The original Remoska was very simple, without regulation of output and without the external thermal insulation of the top. Cooking-baking in Remoska is

very easy and the prepared meal in it does not lose water, the meat doesn't dry out. Chicken baked in a common oven just can’t stand comparison with chicken prepared in Remoska, whether today or the former version. The original Remoska without glass window has proven to be more advantageous, a warm’s deal outflow through the window and the middle of the baked meal so easily did not bake. Oldřich Homuta devised Remoska at the beginning of fifties, who optimalized the prototype with his coworkers further. The first remoska so had sign HUT (Homuta, Uher, Tyburec). Small Homut’s workshop was nationalized and fused to the concern of the local business REMOS (= Revisions, Electro, Montages, Opravy, Service). (Concern REMOS produced for example holders of apparatus` fuses.) First Remoskas began serial produced in the city Zdice, because local plant was specialized on baking ovens (and its products have born the sign ESČ since 1926). Production onto the new plant in the city Kostelec nad

Černými Lesy moved in 1957 was, where 2.7 million pieces of all Remoska’s sizes produced until 1991th. Then the production stopped was. Double of Misters Blažek and Uličník bought the trademark Remoska 1994, who also founded new production plant Remoska Ltd. in the city Frenštát pod Radhoštěm. License DuPont on the Teflon® layer’s spray bought in 1999th. Export into Great Britain began in the year 2003 and then the one followed onto a decade of countries. More than 50 percent of production is exported. The price of reborn Remoska did about CZK-3000.0 in 2014, price was at the smaller design CSK 180.0 and at the bigger design CSK 210.0 in sixties. Resounds on the modern Remoska are perplexed, it seems that its persistence will not be as same as at first types, which in many cases use to this day and are easy repairable in the common D.I.Y. workshop.
