Ollie Shenkir Jakubik Celebrates 100th Birthday

Happy birthday to Lodge 9, Snook member Ollie Shenkir Jakubik! She celebrated her special day on July 20, 2016. Sister Ollie started the youth club at Lodge 9 in the early 1960s.

Ollie Shenkir Jakubik of Lodge 9, Snook celebrated her 100th birthday on July 20, 2016. A reception was hosted by her family to honor the occasion on Sunday, July 17 at Snook Brethren Church. The church’s fellowship hall was filled to capacity. Ollie was overwhelmed at such an outpouring of well-wishers and remarked, “I didn’t know I had so many nice friends.” Guests had traveled from as far away as Carlsbad, New Mexico. Ollie has spent much time poring over the many beautiful birthday cards and remembering the visits at the reception, as well as the visits in her home and the phone calls. She treasures the beautiful corsage she received that day and bouquets of flowers that continue to brighten her day. She would like to thank everyone for their thoughtfulness and expressions of kindness. A special thank you to SPJST Lodge 9, Snook for the two beautiful arrangements given in her honor. Ollie has been an SPJST member for

more than 80 years. She and her husband, Ernest, were very active in SPJST for decades. He was an insurance agent for many years and also served as District One Organizer from September 1969 to February 1974. In the early 1960s, Ollie started the SPJST Lodge 9, Snook Youth Club with assistance from Lillie (Matejka) O’Shields of Lodge 39, Bryan and Lola Vavra of Lodge 17, New Tabor. Ollie attributes her longevity to healthy living, taking one day a time, and trusting in God to take care of her. She continues to live in the same home that she and Ernest built and where they raised their family. It has been a happy home filled with children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, and even happier now filled with so many memories of a beautiful 100th birthday. Ollie and her family sincerely appreciate the many kindnesses shown. Thank you again to everyone, and may God bless you all! —SPJST—

Lodge 154, fort worth bRothers share unique journey to 12th Olympic GAMEs

Editor’s Note: Best wishes to SPJST Lodge 154, Fort Worth members Rome Milan and son Athens and Tal and Lesli Milan and daughters Talia and Sophie as they enjoy the 2016 Summer Olympics this week in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Tal serves as vice president of Lodge 154, and Lesli serves as treasurer and youth leader. Rome and Tal’s father Jerry serves as president of the Czech Heritage Museum and Genealogy Center. Jerry reports that Rome has more than 10,000 Olympic pins, 12 Olympic torches, and 20 participation medals. By Todd Unger • WFAA

For inspiring artists or big time buyers, one of the ‘go to’ places has long been the downtown Milan Gallery in Fort Worth. But owner Tal Milan won’t be around much come August. Tal and his brother, Rome, are attending their 11th Summer Olympic games. Turns out, they haven’t missed one in decades! They left for Rio de Janeiro, Brazil at the end of July. “This time we actually had some tickets,” says Tal. “We hardly ever have tickets.” Since 1972, the brothers have attended every summer games starting with Munich and ending with London in 2012. The only year they missed was Russia in

1980. “I started taking the Russian language. But then when the boycott happened, we had to boycott,” says Rome. Rome, a teacher, has even named his three children after previous host cities in Olympic history. “My oldest boy is named Paris, and then Sydney, and Athens followed,” he says with a laugh. There are almost too many stories for the brothers to share. Rome met his wife at the Los Angeles games in 1984. Tal helped the two of them sneak into the Olympic family village in 1988 in Seoul, South Korea. They stayed there the entire trip. “You get on an elevator and there is Chris Everett. You get on an elevator and there is Edward Moses,” he says. In Barcelona, they separately lost luggage and had it stolen. Still, they did see the USA basketball ‘Dream Team’ play its first game. Their family has longtime gymnastics ties to North Texas. In recent years, they’ve brought their children and wives to attend. Their mother, Henrietta, actually qualified for the games in the late 1950s as a gymnast but couldn’t go in 1960 because she was pregnant. Rome says these days, it’s far more about the experience of actually getting a

taste of a different environment. “There is absolutely nothing like the thrill of being there.”

Frances McBride then made a motion to skip the September meeting and meet with Lodges 87, Temple and 246, Morgan’s Point. Members voted, and it was passed.

Door prizes were then awarded with the meeting adjourning. I would also like to wish a happy birthday to Frances McBride on August 6 and to my dad James R. Hosch on August 17. Fraternally, Michael D. Hosch Secretary/Reporter —SPJST—

S.P.J.S.T. Skilled Nursing and Rehabilitation Center Hosts Grand Opening “Our dream has become a reality,” S.P.J.S.T. Senior Living Centers Board Chairman Donnie Victorick proudly announced to more than 400 guests gathered to witness the ribbon cutting and grand opening of the new S.P.J.S.T. providing them with this wonderful facility to enjoy along with the necessary services that they need,” he said. Located at 1810 Old Granger Road in Taylor, the new facility is a major upgrade from the original building that was constructed in 1959. It is known as a small house concept, Administrator Woody Richards pointed out. “The 16 residents on each hall will have their own living and dining room,” he said. “This will translate into a homier and

cozier lifestyle.” In efforts directed towards removing institutionalization from the skilled nursing facility, Administrator Richards said that each resident will have decision making for themselves, “Residents can decide when to get up, go to bed, dine, and select their meal from a menu.” The new building has private rooms and allows for additional residents, bringing the number up from 74 to 96.

Each wing houses 16 residents with larger semi-private rooms that provide more privacy. “We want to thank everyone for assisting us in opening and blessing the new skilled nursing and rehabilitation facility,” Administrator Woody Richards added. Congratulations to S.P.J.S.T. Senior Living Centers on this new, beautiful facility! —SPJST—

The

Board of Directors of S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home is excited to announce the completion of a new 96bed skilled nursing facility in Taylor, Texas. This facility includes state-of-theart skilled nursing services, memory care, and an outstanding therapy rehabilitation center. This new facility is scheduled to begin providing health care services to individuals in late August 2016. For almost 60 years, S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home in Taylor has provided quality longterm care for the elderly population in this community and its surrounding area. Maintaining an excellent reputation among the general population, the Rest Home continues to maintain an occupancy rate that exceeds 98 percent. Over time, another skilled nursing facility was opened in Needville in 1972; an assisted living facility was built in Taylor in 2003 and this facility expanded in 2008; our board recently acquired another skilled nursing facility in Hillje bringing the total to four facilities where we are providing health care to residents in various locations within the state. We are reaching out to you as individuals and lodges to consider making charitable financial contributions, not only for your tax purposes, but to be a part of the excitement of the growth you would be creating in this community. Please join us in carrying on the legacy of quality care and services to the elderly that possibly you and your forefathers began in 1957.

At the 1956 SPJST Convention, the Rest Home Committee presented its report to the delegates, and the convention approved the concept of constructing a home for the elderly. S.P.J.S.T. In Memory of Anna Johnson

Anna Elizabeth Johnson, age 96, a loving mother, grandmother, greatgrandmother, and friend, went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, July 28, 2016. Anna was born May 29, 1920, in New Orleans, Louisiana, to New Orleans Police Chief Theodore Ray and wife Jennie Ray. She was one Anna Johnson of seven children in a family that is still very close today. Anna will always be remembered for being a caring and loving woman. Anna was a lifetime member of St. Thomas Catholic Church; St. Thomas Women Organization; SPJST Lodge 154, Fort Worth; For Worth Sokol; and Fort Worth Friendship Club. She kept relationships of family and friends together by routinely making phone calls and sending cards and photos for every occasion—sometimes just to say “hi” or just to let them know she was thinking of them. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Ray B. Johnson; daughter Anne Johnson Foster; son Carl D. Johnson; four brothers; and two sisters. Anna will be deeply missed by all who loved and knew her. Survivors are son Kent B. Johnson; granddaughters Nicole Johnson Brown and husband Tim, and Melissa Johnson Janak and husband Irvin; great-grandchildren Camron, Carleigh, Cooper, Lexie, Skylar, Haley, and Hunter; great-great-grandchild Raven; daughter-in-law Helen Johnson; numerous nieces and nephews; and extended family James and Linda Dority. Mass of Christian burial was at 10:30 a.m. Monday, August 1 at St. Thomas Catholic Church. Interment was at Greenwood Memorial Park. Visitation was from 4 to 6 p.m. Sun-

State Queen Kacie Vanecek shares amazing, unforgettable year

Dear Readers, This has been a whirlwind of a year, and I can’t believe that it has already come and gone. It has been filled with amazing people and memories that I will never forget and will treasure forever. I have always loved attending State Youth Achievement Day (YAD), but this year, it is almost bittersweet because it means that my reign will truly

be over, and I just wish that I could do it all o v e r again. Not only is my reign ending, but so is my journey through the youth club. I’m excited about continuing on as an adult in SPJST, but there is something very special about being a youth member

that I will greatly miss. I have met so many people and made so many friends because of SPJST, and being State Queen increased that blessing tenfold. Of the many amazing people I met, one particular encounter that was my favorite was at the Caldwell Kolache Festival, where I got to meet Tomáš Hudeček, a former mayor of Prague. He is just one person on a never-ending list of amazing people I have met as queen. I’m so thankful for everyone who helped me become State Queen. My family, my youth club leader, and everyone who encouraged me to run. Without their support, I wouldn’t have done this, and I would have missed out on something really amazing. I’m also thankful for everyone who helped me throughout my reign. I could fill the entire Vestnik with a list of names of the people who had a part in making this past year possible. A few among these are Patsy, Lynette, Brian, Melanie, and David, to whom I am forever grateful for all that they have done. This year, I was also blessed with an amazing court. Brady, Seth, and Makayla were all wonderful and so much fun to spend time with during events. I know it wasn’t always easy at times, and I’m so proud of them for pushing forward and giving it their all. I’m so glad that I got to have this experience with them, and I wish we could do it all over again. I am also thankful to the families

of my court. They were a huge source of support throughout appearances, and I am so grateful for them. I could continue on and on about more people that I am thankful for, but I will end it here with just one more. I am thankful for SPJST because without it, I never would have been State Queen, and I never would have encountered all of these people. So thank you to SPJST and everyone in it. Dear Vestnik Readers, I just got back from summer camp at SPJST Education and Nature Center (ENC) at Cooper Farm. I had fun playing gaga ball and the shaving cream game. Fun Ways to Help Ease Kids Back into the Classroom

Lodge 30, Taiton youth: volleyball fun at camp

Dear Vestnik Readers, I went to camp at SPJST Education and Nature Center (ENC) at Cooper Farm on July 21 to 24, 2016. I had so much fun swimming, playing gaga ball, four-square, and hanging out with friends. I had so much fun beating Hunter in a game of “rock, paper, scissors”. This year, we played in a volleyball tournament. It was so much fun playing against other teams. I was with Group 8, and my LITs were Ramsey and Hunter. Our group walked around saying, “Ba Ba Ba.” We got that saying while we were playing volleyball. Sincerely, Brittany Baker —SPJST—

Lodge 47, Seaton youth enjoys camp

I had a great time at SPJST camp. My favorite part was the dance on Friday night and playing gaga ball. I got to go on the night hike for the first time, and it was fun. I’m really excited that camp will be longer next year. Tyson Bilbrey —SPJST—

(StatePoint) After a summer of fun, getting back into the swing of the classroom can be difficult for students of all ages and family backgrounds. But parents can help, say experts. “It’s easy for parents to feel like there isn't enough time to add more activities to an already packed schedule. But, there are many easy ways you can set the tone of making learning fun, ease the back-to-school transition, and foster literacy skills at home,” says Jon Reigelman, creative director of the National Center for Families Learning (NCFL). Reigelman suggests seeking out free resources, such as Camp Wonderopolis, a virtual camp and online learning tool available to all families, libraries, schools, and community organizations. It can be a great weekend or after-school activity for busy families that can be completed at any pace. The site features “Maker” projects that can be created with items found around the house, and virtual, collectible Wonder Cards that can be earned by interacting with the site. Getting kids into an out-of-classroom learning habit now will set them up for future success. (Looking ahead to winter break or next summer, the program is also a great tool for combatting the learning loss common during vacations!) To register, visit camp.wonderopolis.org. For younger kids, NCFL offers these great back-to-school tips for families.

• Choose a letter of the day. Look for the chosen letter in any printed materials you see -- the newspaper, street signs, billboards, or advertisements. Make up a silly sentence using only words beginning with the letter of the day. (For example: Cats can cuddle. Dogs don’t drive. Amy always acts awake.) • Singing songs can be a literacy activity. Try this twist: Sing short songs like “Row, Row, Row Your Boat” several times, leaving off the last word each time until there are no words left. This activity always produces giggles from children and parents alike. • Play “Guess Who.” Describe a cartoon character, celebrity or historical figure. Allow a guess after each detail is disclosed. Expand your child’s vocabulary by using unusual words, and then explain their meanings. Take turns. Listen carefully to your child’s descriptions, especially his or her choice of vocabulary. Encourage your child to paint a picture of the character with his or her words. At the end of the game, compliment your child on any unusual or new words used. • Talk to your child about his or her day. Pretend to be a television reporter. Try questions like “what was the most surprising (curious, funny, eventful) thing that happened today?” You are giving your child opportunities to increase vocabulary, recall and reflect, and you are receiving a more detailed version of the time you spent apart. Be prepared to answer the same questions. You and your child will begin looking for events to report to each other. The beginning of the school year can be hectic for everyone. Help kids get a leg up on their lessons by boosting literacy skills at home. —SPJST—

Another occasion for a celebration is the Namesday or the birthday. In America, one’s Namesday is rarely celebrated, but in the Czech Republic, it is put on the same level as the birthday. On the days of popular patron saints, such as St. Joseph, St. Wenceslaus - Václav, or St. Anna, it is not uncommon to have bands of musicians going from one Joseph’s house to another and serenading him. Also dances are often organized on the nearest Saturday and named Josefská, Václavská, or Annenská zábava. The word, zábava, stands for entertainment, but is often used also to mean dance. On one’s Namesday or birthday, people are congratualted. All can be preceded by “I wish you”—Přeji vám or Přeji Ti. The first is the polite, and the latter is the familiar form. * * * * *

Ray dohodne čas a místo schůzky.

opravit a doplnit dosavadní stanovy nadace. Vydávání oběžníku vícekrát ročně vyžaduje výdaje a práci. —SPJST—

“How Kolaches Came to Texas” lecture tour begins this week

Alice Lunakova

“How Kolaches Came to Texas” a lecture tour featuring Baylor University Keston Scholar Alice Lunakova of Prague, Czech Republic, begins this week. Alice Lunakova of Prague, Czech Republic, returns to Texas this month to share the results of research she conducted here last summer while a student at Masaryk University in Brno, Czech Republic. She will give a presentation of her final thesis on the history of Czech immigration to Texas in the 19th century. She is scheduled to present at four events throughout the state. The events will be held Tuesday, August 9 at 2 p.m. Czech Heritage Museum 119 West French Avenue in Temple

Sunday, August 14 at 2 p.m. Texas Czech Heritage and Cultural Center 250 West Fair Grounds Road in La Grange

Friday, August 19 at 6 p.m. Czech Center Museum Houston 4920 San Jacinto at Wichita in Houston

Tuesday, August 30 at 3:30 p.m. The Keston Center for Religion, Politics and Society Guy B. Harrison Jr. Reading Room Baylor University in Waco

Lunakova graduated in May from Masaryk University. She majored in French and English language at the Faculty of Education and currently teaches languages full time. Lunakova explained why she chose to study Texas Czechs. “The motivation for writing about this topic originates from my two extended stays in Texas. First, I studied for one semester at McLennan Community College in Waco in 2014 with the exchange program offered by the English Department of Faculty of Education at Masaryk University. “Thanks to this opportunity, I not only learned about the remarkable history of thousands of the Czechs who settled in Texas, but I was also able to visit the local towns that once used to be the thriving Czech communities, see the Czech signs at the shops and streets, enter the Czech bakeries to smell and taste the renowned kolaches, attend the Czech festivals, and last but not least, to speak with the Czech descendants whose enthusiasm when speaking of their ancestors amazed me. “Their striking pride of being of Czech ancestry raised my interest in learning more about the history of their ancestors. “After coming home and starting to research the available sources, I could not find any particularly useful literature as sources of reference, and therefore, I decided to return to Texas in the following year. “This enabled me to undertake my research at the Library of Baylor University, visit Czech museums and heritage centers, attend the traditional mass at Praha Feast, and enabled me to meet many Czech descendants who were more than willing to share with me their personal experiences,” she said.” For more information, contact Susan Chandler at czechheritagemuseum@gmail.com or 817-919-9095. —SPJST—

Meaning of The Grand March

Editor’s Note: Thanks to Lodge 97, Placedo Reporter Bernadette Bluhm Bellanger for sharing this interesting article about “The Grand March.” Bernadette writes, “I never knew the meaning of it. I thought it was a Czech thing! The Grand March at my wedding was to “Under the Double Eagle” . . . over and over, and it was big! It was at Decosta Hall, and my Cajun cousins loved it!” From West Texas Weddings Blog by Timpy Tiemann Friday, September 7, 2012

Growing up in South Texas, the weddings that we went to that had a dinner reception and dance always included the Grand March or sometimes known as the “Wedding March.” When I moved to West Texas, not many people knew what the Grand March was or the meaning behind it. Yes, there really is a meaning to everyone getting up to join the new couple in celebrating their new journey ahead.

The Grand March The dance begins with the couple being led around the room in a circle, which signifies life. The couple then separates, which signifies a quarrel. The couple then joins back together signifying making-up. The couples then join together in rows of four or more to signify the growing family. The dance then returns to single file, forming a snake that signifies the twists and turns of life. The couples then join together to form a bridge to which each person goes under to signify the strength of the new couples bond. The newlyweds then dance together while the wedding party and guests form a circle around them signifying the support of the family in marriage.

The Grand March is also another way to get everyone who is at the wedding involved in the dance part of the reception. You know, everyone has been sitting through the ceremony and then they travel to the reception hall and wait for the bridal party to arrive and then enjoying their dinner. After

all of that, its finally time to dance, and this is the way we start weddings in South Texas . . . with the Grand March. The Grand March is usually led by a couple that has been married for many years because you want to learn from those with experience. The tempo of the music is upbeat but not too fast. As the Grand March encircles the happy couple, the music lulls them into their first dance. This is always my favorite part. Everyone always has a great time!

Among Kansas’ roadside attractions, this one’s unbeatable

Editor’s Note: Thanks to Vestnik reader Ron Schraeder of Wichita, Kansas, for sharing this article from The Wichita Eagle. By Beccy Tanner btanner@wichitaeagle.com The Wichita Eagle July 21, 2016

In Kansas, we have it all: World’s Largest Sisal Ball of Twine (Cawker City), World’s Largest Outdoor Concrete Municipal Swimming Pool (Garden City), World’s Largest Hand-Dug Well (Greensburg), World’s Largest Prairie Dog (Oakley). And then, of course, there is Lucas with its concrete Garden of Eden and the town’s huge public toilet. Comes now the World’s Largest Hand-Painted Czech Egg – Kansas’ newest roadside attraction. The finishing touches were put on it in July. The town of Wilson has created a lumbering 8,000-pound fiberglass and steel egg that’s 22 feet tall, 15 feet wide and painted in Czech designs. It’s been 13 years in the making. “We’d been saving up money to do this egg, but we couldn’t find anyone to manufacture it,” said Jerry Florian, the Wilson Chamber of Commerce president. He credits Sharon Halloway, who was the town’s chamber

president in 2003, with coming up with the idea. Major funding for the $16,000 egg came from LaVange Shiroky’s Revokable Trust Improvement Fund, as well as other grants from the Czech Republic, Midwest Energy, Smoky Hills Charitable Foundation, and bake sales – because who doesn’t like a fruitfilled kolache? Hess Services Inc. of Hays manufactured the egg; Maico Industries in Ellsworth made the gazebo the egg sits in. And Wilson art teacher Christine Slechta, with the help of volunteers, created the traditional Czech design on the egg. “Yeah, it’s a big egg – couldn’t get the chicken to come with it,” Florian joked. But it may take some time to establish Wilson’s egg credentials – Winlock, Washington, claims the world’s largest egg as does Mentone, Indiana, which also lays claim to being the Egg Basket of the Midwest. The town of Vegreville in Alberta, Canada, claims the World’s Largest Easter Egg. Not to worry, Florian says. Wilson’s World’s Largest Hand-Made Czech

Egg is already pulling off travelers on I-70 to visit. “Oh, it’s been hundreds already,” Florian said. “Just two weeks ago – my wife and I have a soda shop – and people stop by. I don’t always know where they are from, but the reason they came to Wilson was to see the egg. One of the couples was from New England. The other from Switzerland.” The Ellsworth County town has a population of about 760 residents, many of Czechoslovakian descent. In Czech culture, the egg is often a symbol of new life. Chicken eggs are often hand painted at Easter, and the skill is passed down from grandmothers to mothers to daughters. The old way often involved using hot wax, a bent spoon stuck in a po-

Wilson is also known for its annual After Harvest Czech Festival. This year’s festival was July 28 to 30. The egg was dedicated at 3 p.m. on July 29 at the Ed and LaVange Shiroky Park.
