SPJST hosts virtual statewide youth competition

2020 SPJST Youth Showcase D

espite the COVID-19 outbreak cancelling SPJST’s seven annual District Youth Achievement Days and State Youth Achievement Day this year, the SPJST Youth Program continued to highlight its talented youth in a platform that delivered excitement to the participants and their families. In the first-ever SPJST Youth Showcase, youth registered entries in constructed items, individual talent, photography, pictorial arts, and royalty (public speaking) in June and early July. Judges scored the entries in the first round of competition, and the showcase of entries and results were posted at spjst.org. Each district’s first place finisher in the categories advanced to the final state round of competition which was judged in early August. The first place district royalty kings and queens met online to deliver their speech presentations and answer interview questions. State craft and talent entries and results were then posted at spjst.org. Royalty results were announced on Facebook Live on Saturday, August 15.

2020 - 2021 SPJST State Royalty

The youth who participated in the competitions worked hard to prepare their entries, and we are excited to highlight their extraordinary achievements on pages 12 to 19 of this week’s Vestnik and at spjst.org.

State King Koby, 17, is the son of Shane and Donna Stone of Rogers. Koby is a lifetime member of SPJST and a youth club member since the age of five. He currently serves as youth club president. His goal is to make a difference in SPJST and to inspire young children. Koby is a senior at Rogers High School where he plays football. He is a member of National Honor Society. I certainly enjoyed accompanying State Fraternal Director Frank Horak and Fraternal Services Specialist Tammy Martinez on a “secret youth mission” to Fort Worth, Temple, and Rogers to crown the queen, duchess, king, and duke. We took video of each surprise announcement and crowning and compiled it for a “live” special announcement that was shared on Saturday, August 15. This video and all results of the 2020 SPJST Youth Showcase are featured at spjst.org. Please check it out! Congratulations to all participants. Sincere Sympathy We extend our condolences to District Seven Publication Committee Representative Regina House and her family. Regina’s mother, Georgia E. Marek of Lodge 202, Jourdanton, passed away on August 7. Sister Georgia’s obituary appears on page 23. Please keep Regina and her family in your thoughts and prayers.

Member expresses scholarship gratitude

Nazdar, Sister Melanie. My Czech friend, Petr Dam, was reading my copy of the July 13, 2020, Vestnik when he saw the recipe for kvašáky and said, “NO vinegar!” So here is his Czech-Moravian recipe:

Dear SPJST, I am very grateful to have received the SPJST General Freshman Scholarship. Thank you so much for supporting my college goals. I am very excited to be a business major at the University of Texas at Austin in the fall. Thank you so much for helping me get there!

KVAŠÁKY 6 lbs of small gherkins or 3 to 4 inch cucumbers, washed well 5 grape leaves 8 whole cloves of garlic 8 slices of fresh horseradish dill leaves and stems 2 to 2.5 Tablespoons of salt per quart of cold water, stir until all dissolved Large 1- or 2-gallon jar with a lid (you can make them in two jars) Wash cucumbers properly, poke 3 to 4 holes with a needle, then tightly pack them into the jar. The leaves, garlic, and horseradish can be alternated at the bottom, in the middle, and on top. To this, add the salted water. Place the lid on but not closed so that the cucumbers can breathe as some of the water will overflow. Have some saucer or bowl under each jar. When this occurs, add additional salted water. Leave in a warm but not hot place for 7 to 10 days. Eat and enjoy! It is best to keep them in the fridge once they are done. A琀ention SPJST High School Seniors and Co氀ege Undergraduates: SPJST Scholarship Applications Available September 2020 Through January 2021

Scholarship program rewards academic excellence, extracurricular involvement Dear Members, Whether students are studying online or on campus, they need funding to make it happen. The SPJST Scholarship Program is here to help. Since its inception in 1984, more than $1,600,000 in scholarships have been awarded to deserving young members through the program. In 2020, 43 general scholarships, two technical scholarships, and two leadership grants were presented. In addition, five district merit scholarships, one state merit scholarship, and two royalty scholarships were awarded this summer for a total of 55 scholarships and grants presented for the year. SPJST scholarships are funded through an annual allocation by SPJST and thanks to voluntary contributions received through our 100 Pennies Scholarship Drive, memorial donations, and endowments. Donations are tax deductible. Applications for scholarships are sent out by email from September through January upon request – or you may download the applications at www.spjst.org. The Fraternal Department must receive the completed application and all requested information by February 1, 2021. Recipients are announced in April. The following scholarships are available through the program: General and Technical Scholarships – For all SPJST members Leadership Grants – For active SPJST youth club members – Applicants may only apply for this grant in their senior year of high school. Active youth club members are strongly encouraged to apply for the General Scholarship — or Technical Scholarship if attending a technical school) and the Leadership Grant.

All interested SPJST members who wish to apply for a scholarship must meet the following criteria: r Have an active SPJST insurance certificate in force for at least one full year as of February 1; if the membership is in the form of an annuity, the amount must be at least $10,000. r Be a full-time student. r Hold an active SPJST insurance certificate and/or annuity for the duration of the scholarship. r Be a high school graduate or equivalent. r Attend an accredited two- or four-year college, university, or technical college – as designated by one of the six regional accrediting bodies in the United States. Best wishes to all SPJST members who wish to apply for a scholarship this year. I hope to see many of our young people apply for the 2021 scholarships. Moms and dads; grandmothers and grandfathers, help us spread the word and encourage the special young members in your lives to apply! On a Related Note . . . Members and lodges wishing to make a positive difference in the life of a young person and at the same time establish a lasting memorial may establish or contribute to an SPJST Endowed Scholarship. The scholarship may be established in your name or the name of the individual you wish to honor. SPJST Endowed Scholarships may be established starting at $10,000. By definition, an endowed scholarship is one in which the principle

remains intact and only the interest is awarded each year. Once established, your scholarship will be managed by SPJST. Your endowment creates a permanent funding source that will grow over time and will support deserving students today and in the future. In establishing an SPJST Endowed Scholarship, you have the opportunity to set the criteria for your SPJST Endowed Scholarship. For example, you may wish to direct your scholarship fund to reward high achievement students who are pursuing a specific field of study. Other criteria for you to consider are specific colleges or universities, areas of academic interest or extracurricular involvement, community service, or hometown. Please know that in establishing restrictive criteria, you will be limiting the pool of qualified recipients. More about that later. Also, in accordance with IRS publication 526, located at http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/p526.pdf, a donor may not select a specific individual as a beneficiary of their gift, i.e. scholarship recipients. SPJST Endowed Scholarships differ from others in that they are truly the gift that keeps giving. An SPJST Endowed Scholarship is a perpetual gift because only the interest is applied towards the scholarship while the principle continuously grows. Endowed scholarships are a wonderful way to honor a loved one or link your legacy with the future. The minimum gift needed to establish a named, endowed SPJST scholarship is $10,000. This amount can be paid all at once or in payments. Once the fund reaches the $20,000 amount, the scholarship will be awarded annually in the honoree’s name. Until $20,000 is reached, the interest gained is reinvested in the fund. At the primary donor’s request, an endowed scholarship will be awarded every other year, provided that the endowment balance totals at least $10,000. There are many ways to fund an en-

dowment, including gifts of cash, bequests, securities, life insurance, retirement assets, or properties. Here’s Another Option . . . As an alternative to an SPJST Endowed Scholarship, donors may elect to award a one-time scholarship in the name of an individual, organization, or business. The minimum donation needed to award a one-time SPJST scholarship in the name of an individual, organization, or business is $1,000. Just as with the SPJST Endowed Scholarship, donors seeking to award a one-time SPJST scholarship also have the opportunity to set the criteria for your SPJST Scholarship. Criteria should not be so narrowly defined that it is difficult or impossible to find qualified applicants and, therefore, to honor the donor’s intent. Following are some general criteria that may be considered by donors: • Award restricted to students in a specified college and/or major. • Award restricted to students from a specific school or county. • Applicability only to high school graduates or undergraduate students or open to both. • Participation in extracurricular activities such as honor societies and student organizations. In the event a donor proposes criteria which are too narrowly defined, SPJST will explore the implications of such closely defined criteria with the donor. If you have any questions about the information that I have presented or if you would like to proceed with the establishment of an SPJST Scholarship, please give me a call at 800-727-7578 and I will be happy to assist you. Fraternally, Brian Vanicek Supreme Lodge President —SPJST—

Supreme Lodge provides update, guidance on pandemic distancing

State Fraternal Director shares August updates

Regular 42 Dominoes Saturday, April 10, 2021 SPJST Home Office in Temple

Dear Brothers and Sisters, The ongoing coronavirus pandemic has changed the way we live; however, it hasn’t changed the defining nature of SPJST which is to make a positive difference in the lives of our members and the communities that we serve. SPJST remains committed to providing its members with exceptional service. Personnel are on duty to respond to questions you may have regarding your certificate, filing a claim or making changes in your personal records. Too, SPJST sales agents remain ready to address and serve your needs for quality life insurance and annuity products with most — and in some cases all — of the application process without meeting face to face. It isn’t business as usual; however, we have a responsible team in place and the work is getting done.

SPJST Meetings, Play It Safe (Please note this is an update from the printed/mailed Vestnik.) Throughout the spring and summer months, SPJST lodges were excused from any requirements to adhere to their established regular meeting schedule. Moving forward, the Supreme Lodge will continue to excuse lodges from their established monthly meeting schedules. That is not to say you are prohibited from meeting. Any decision on the part of a lodge to host face-to-face meetings should rely on a risk-based approach. Precautions to consider include actions to prevent transmission between people, where to hold the meeting, and how it can be modified to make a safer environment. Meeting organizers are requested to provide all necessary supplies – masks, hand hygiene stations, hand sanitizer or soap and water, tissues, and distance markers. Deciding not to meet remains an option that should be considered or when precautions cannot be effectively implemented or adequately communicated. Additionally, lodges are encouraged to consider incorporating online teleconferencing as a way to stay connected. Several lodges have taken advantage of meeting online. The spjst.org website includes some basic information that will enable you to get started. We will be happy to work with you on this if you decide to pursue this option. Social Distancing Measures The Supreme Lodge commends SPJST members, lodge and district leaders for their collective and ongoing efforts to keep our members, families, friends, and communities safe. Throughout the spring and summer months, the SPJST Supreme Lodge has monitored and implemented the procedural recommendations of Governor Abbott aimed at ensuring the health and safety of our employees, members, and communities. As a result, there were numerous cancellations of SPJST lodge and district events. Additionally, SPJST lodges that rely on private rentals and business revenues through service to the general community have suffered. Moving Forward Throughout the spring and summer months, SPJST lodges were excused from any requirements to adhere to their established regular meeting schedule. Moving forward, the Supreme Lodge will continue to excuse lodges from their established monthly meeting schedules. That is not to say you are prohibited from meeting. Any decision on the part of lodge officers to host face-to-face meetings should rely on a risk-based approach. Precautions to consider include actions to prevent transmission between people, and where to hold the meeting

and how it can be modified to make a safer environment. The spjst.org website includes some basic information that will enable you to get started. If you have any specific questions relating to setting up an online meeting please know that you may contact Vestnik Editor/Director of Communication Melanie Zavodny at melaniez@spjst.com for additional information. Regarding lodges that have buildings and would like to provide their facilities for public rentals, the State of Texas does not have any specific COVID-19 guidelines as they relate to civic or fraternal organizations such as ours. For that reason, we are recommending that lodges seeking guidance in this matter are encouraged to refer to the “Checklist for Wedding Reception Venues” which is issued by the Texas Department of State Health Services. The link to that document can be found on the open.texas.gov website. The actual link is: https://open.texas.gov/uploads/files/ organization/opentexas/OpenTexasChecklist-Wedding-Venues.pdf Thank you, all, for your continued support of the SPJST throughout these challenging times. We will continue to monitor COVID-19 developments and update you as relevant information becomes available. Best wishes for your good health and happiness. Fraternally, Brian Vanicek SPJST President —SPJST—

Lodge 17, New Tabor misses summer youth activities Dear Readers, What a crazy summer it has been! I can honestly say I missed my time working with the youth of our lodge on Youth Achievement Day (YAD) group talents and beseda dancing. Lodge 17, New Tabor did not meet in July due to one of our officers testing positive for the virus and two other officers having a direct exposure. I am happy to report that all are doing fine. We met on Sunday, August 2, 2020, with President Randy Gaas calling the meeting to order at 2 p.m. All officers were present, and we had one member and one guest present as well. Secretary Betty Suehs read the minutes of the last meeting, and they were approved as read. Resolutions of sympathy were read for our departed sisters, Patricia Vavra, Johnnie Ruth Homeyer, and Mildred Houdek. A moment of silence was observed. Treasurer Kyle Skrabanek gave his report. He stated that the account at Prosperity Bank had been closed and that all funds were at Citizens State Bank. Holly Narro gave the youth report. She stated that several youth participated in the 2020 SPJST Youth Showcase (virtual District YAD) and many had placed and advanced to the state round of competition. Macy Narro was selected Dis-

trict One Queen, and Millison Dowell is her duchess. Holly is saddened that we did not get to experience the typical summer SPJST season with YAD practices and camp. She also gave her fraternal activities coordinator’s (FAC) report stating that state tournaments were not yet scheduled. Susan Skrabanek gave the hall report. She reported that she has only had a couple of rentals in the last four months, and they were for small family gatherings. Under old business we postponed the 50- and 75-year pin presentation. It was discussed to include this with our December memorial service. There was no new business and meeting was adjourned. Susan Skrabanek, Reporter —SPJST—

Lodge 24, Cyclone appreciates members’ work on hall cooler SPJST Lodge 24, Cyclone met on Monday, August 10, 2020, at Flag Hall, amid fields that have been stripped of their heavy burden of corn. The meeting was called to order at 7:08 p.m. by President Daniel Wilde with a silent prayer for our deceased members and prayers for our nation and medical workers. Margaret Mikeska discussed the minutes of the last meeting. Sadly, we lost Vallie Goeke, James Foshee, and Marilyn Olson. Our condolences to their families. We received thank you letters from Michael Hoelscher and Sara Stowers for their graduation money. The money for the Vrazel Tribute dance has been refunded. A total of $160 dollars of the money was donated back to the lodge. Our management account has been a real help. We are using it to the nth degree. Knights of Columbus Assembly 3488 had its fundraiser drawing at the hall. Jason Hoelscher paid for the kitchen and the beer that was consumed. Camp Kubena had day camps this summer. We talked about the lack of insurance sales for our lodge. We thanked Carl Macek and Daniel Wilde for their work on the new cooler. The lodge gave them a bonus. Birthday celebrants were Jonathon Maddux who turned 23 years old on August 18 and Barbara Macek who had a birthday on July 3. For the Lodge, Bobby Hoelscher —SPJST—

Lodge 54, West cancels Sept. 11 meeting Dear Members, After speaking with the lodge officers and other lodge members who attend our meetings, it was decided to cancel our next quarterly meeting which was scheduled for September 11, 2020, due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Since most of the members who attend our meetings are elderly, we want to keep them as safe as possible. We were planning to present our 75year and 50-year pins at this meeting with a ceremony honoring these

members. Their pins will be mailed to them at this time, but we do plan to honor them at a future meeting once this pandemic is under control, and we are back to normal. Members of Lodge 54 who are to receive their 75-year pins this year are Jeanette J. Karlik and Mary Ann Roden. Members of Lodge 54 who are to receive their 50-year pins this year are Helen Marie Matus, Daniel R. Mynar, Alfred Renfro Pavlas, Lawrence E. Skinner, and Mark Henry Tobola. We

want to congratulate them and thank them for their long-standing membership to SPJST Lodge 54. We will keep everyone updated about when we will be able to meet again, and if we will be able to have our annual Christmas party depending on the status of the COVID-19 pandemic. God bless everyone, and I hope everyone is staying safe during this COVID-19 pandemic. Fraternally, Freddie Kaluza, President —SPJST—

Martha (Sulak) Gerik of Lodge 54, West achieves Grand Age of 96 SPJST congratulates Sister Martha (Sulak) Gerik of Lodge 54, West, who celebrated her 96th birthday on Thursday, August 20, 2020. As such, Martha is entitled to all SPJST member benefits with no further dues or assessments. Martha was born to Mr. and Mrs. Frank Kutach on August 20, 1924, in Avoca, Texas. They were blessed with six children - daughters Sandy Sulak Schroeder (Larry) of Granbury, Jeanette Sulak Janek (Ronald) of Italy, Denise Sulak Hall (Alan) of Granbury, and Dianna Sulak Gerik (Edwin) of Waxahachie and sons Dale Sulak (Martie) of Red Oak and Tommy Sulak (Rita) of Ennis. Martha is retired from Farm Bureau as secretary. She loves sewing, gardening, canning, and making ko-

laches. One of Martha’s best stories and recollections is when she was a little girl attending SPJST lodge meetings. They did not have a hall in Stamford, Texas, to hold their meetings so they would meet in someone’s home. She remembers when it was time for her parents to hold the meeting at their home, her mom and dad would call all of her aunts and uncles to come have dinner with them then they would hold the meeting in the afternoon. She liked it because she could play with her cousins. She later heard the Stamford lodge was combined with the Seymour lodge as the members were so few. Again, we congratulate Sister Martha (Sulak) Gerik on attaining the Grand Age of 96. Thank you, Martha, for all your devotion to SPJST for all these years. May God bless you and your family. —SPJST—

Our thoughts are with his family and friends. It was nice to see Willie Mae Kuykendall after her recovery from pneumonia. Secretary Willie Mae Kuykendall read her June report, and it was approved as read. We did not meet in July so there was no July report. Bradley Stavinoha read the treasurer’s report, and it was approved as read. Special Funds Chairman Dan Natho read his report, and it was approved as read. Under old business, Special Funds Chairman Dan Natho said that he would like to purchase a padlock for the side gate that comes into our parking lot. That was approved. Also under old business, Treasurer Bradley Stavinoha mentioned having a dance at our lodge after our meeting on the third Sunday of October since the Harvest Festival has been canceled. It was decided to allow the new polka band, the M&M Playboys, to provide the music. Under new business, Special Funds Chairman Dan Natho said that the contract was up for the dumpster. It was de-

Under other business, Special Funds Chairman Dan Natho said that he would like to purchase a new floor mat by the front door, but he will wait until later to get it. Next Meeting—September 20 For our next meeting on Sunday, September 20, it was decided to have pizza which will be provided by the lodge. Members, if you wish to bring a dessert, please bring something that is individually prepackaged. See you at the next meeting! Fraternally, Jeanette Newman, Reporter —SPJST—

Lodge 133 San Antonio members look forward to meeting again Dear Members, I have missed seeing all of you during this COVID-19 pandemic. I was hoping to have the July meeting, but we were still worried about social contact at that time and the need for enough space for social distancing. Our meeting hall doesn’t seem large enough to spread out, and

I certainly did not want to endanger anyone. I am hoping that we will be able to meet in October or November for our Thanksgiving luncheon. We will see how September looks. Then I will see if having the luncheon is feasible. Stay safe. You are all in my thoughts and prayers. If you need something, call me on my cell phone 830-214-5228. If I don’t answer, I will return your call if you leave a voice mail. Sincerely, Jarolyn Popp, President —SPJST—

Lodge 180, Burleson extends birthday wishes I never thought that I would be writing another article about another meeting that we were not able to have. I thought when I headed that last article in that manner that it would be the first and last time to begin writing in that manner. But, no! Here we are again kind of in the same boat that we have been in for the last four or five months. When we are in a quarantine-type setting, it seems that the hours, days, and months all just blend together. Do you have to check the date on your phone or calendar to be sure that you are on the correct day? I will admit that I do. It has saddened my heart to hear about some of the deaths during this time frame - both friends and loved ones as we have not been allowed to grieve for these losses in the normal way. Prayers for all that have lost loved ones during this time frame. August birthday wishes go to these members of Lodge 180, Burleson— Brian Greenlees, Vicki Raney, Anna Rummel, Sean Yates, Kamella Wheat, Crystal Schuder, Carol Faulder, Corey

Jones, Hoby Payne, Claudette Cooper, Ryan Payne, Kristen Hicks, and Wanda Underwood. May each one of you have a great birthday celebration with many more in your future. Fort Worth Friendship Club The Fort Worth Friendship Club again sends greetings to all our members and friends. Our last meeting was in March, and it is doubtful that we will meet in September. We have an excellent telephone committee, and they will call each member before our next meeting. Hopefully, it will be soon as everyone has missed our socials and meetings. Our member, Mary Agnes Ward, sent me a letter that her brother, Father Jerome Ward, wrote to the Friendship Club which I will send all a copy. He wrote that he and his sister, both in their 80s, are grateful for their good health and have stayed free from colds, the flu bug, or other issues. They had to cancel trips to Minnesota in May along with a trip to upstate New York, where they were born and raised, and a trip to the Kentucky Derby in September. He also wrote about having to wear a mask which we all have to do. Padre Jerry, thanks for your letter; I enjoyed it. Come join us for lunch at the Friendship Club whenever we meet again. A few years ago, our entertainer for the Friendship Club program was Jeanette Keim. She played the piano and presented both Czech and English songs which were enjoyed by all. I have since learned that she has a “star in the sidewalk” in Fort Worth’s historic Stockyards. It is on the first step of the

Livestock Exchange Building between Sid Richardson’s star on the right, Sue and Charlie McCafferty’s star - founders of the Stockyards Museum, in the middle, and Jeanette’s on the left side. Jeanette’s stage name of “Jean Marlowe” is on her star. The stars are sponsored by the Texas Trail of Fame featuring people who have contributed to the life and development of the historic district. In the 1980s, when the restoration of the stockyards began, the newly restored Stockyard Hotel hired “Miss Jean,” the piano machine, to entertain in the restaurant/bar of the hotel’s Booger Red Saloon. The rinky tink piano was a big hit as there were lots of enthusiastic patrons, tourists, volunteers, etc. available who Jean rounded up to develop the first two nonprofit organizations in the Stockyards Cowboy Church and Cowtown Opry. Both organization are still thriving after 28 years of continuous service of preserving the cowboy culture, their mission to preserve, perform, and promote our Texas heritage. Jeanette and Art Keim are 50-year Sokol members and their grown children are SPJST Lodge 154, Fort Worth members. Helen Skrasek is now home from her 10 days in Oklahoma with son Ron and his wife LeeAnne. She said she had a wonderful time! September birthday celebrants are Mary Ann Krivanek on the 9th, Sherrill Gustafson on the 19th, Mary Schaffer on the 20th, and Libbie Vrla on the 29th. May you all have many more.

I talked with a few of our members. Marilyn Llewellyn is doing well, and she makes sure she wears her mask when she goes out. Margaret Sears has a birthday today and has her daughter and two grandchildren over. They have just taken a cake out of the oven so we know Margaret will have a special birthday cake. Jacie Skrasek, Debbie Skrasek’ granddaughter, had her first day of school today with an ice cream cone as a special treat before going home. I will be anxious to know how it went for her as I am sure it will be different from the normal. Debbie and Gary Skrasek celebrated their 47th wedding anniversary on August 11 with dinner out at Hoffbrau. They said their steaks were wonderful. Stay well, stay safe, and wear your mask. S.P.J.S.T. Senior living goes above and beyond for residents by Jason Hennington Taylor Press August 15, 2020 Reprinted with permission. For three and a half months, S.P.J.S.T. Senior Living Center in Taylor went without a case of COVID-19. The staff at the facility has worked hard to keep residents, families, and themselves safe during this pandemic. “They are a very dedicated group of individuals. I’ve been very proud of them,” said Natalie Wright, lead administrator at S.P.J.S.T. Senior Living. “I consider them all to be heroes for continuing to put themselves at risk and their families at risk to come and work under these circumstances.” She said staff members go “above and beyond” to continue to ensure some quality of life for residents. “All of our workers have been great. They can see when someone [a resident] is down and they spend a little extra time with them,” said Donna Farr, business manager. “They’re going in helping them eat or talking to them while they are going through lunches or dinners. They just give them a little bit of extra personal care every day, so they don’t get lonely.” Wright explained staff members also dedicate time to contact and update residents’ families. There are six family liaisons for the facility, who contacts families and updates them on their residents’ care and what is happening in the nursing home. “It’s one thing to talk to the loved one, but it’s another to hear from the staff, too,” she said. One of the most impactful changes is the restrictions that require residents to stay in their rooms. “Their contact with their loved ones has only been by telephone or by the computer,” Wright said. “That’s been the

hardest part for the residents.” She said some families sit outside of the window and interact with residents. Another way families visit their loved ones is through video at the nursing home. Families sign in and use a laptop or tablet to video chat with their resident. Guidelines from the state restricted visitation, communal dining, and group activities. However, staff members at S.P.J.S.T. modified activities to help residents gather without violating any guidelines. “One of the most popular activities is bingo, but you can’t get a big group together. So, we do hallway bingo,” Wright said. Residents sit in the doorway of their rooms, and the activity director walks up and down the hallway calling numbers. Other activities have also been restricted, which has inconvenienced several residents. “No beauty shop,” Farr said. “It’s been four months since [residents] have

been able to get their hair fixed or cut. They can’t get it colored or permed, nothing.” She said a therapist purchased clippers and gave some residents basic haircuts. Wright said despite the negative impact of the pandemic, it has brought the S.P.J.S.T. family together. “Our staff, our residents, and their family members, it has brought us all much closer together,” she said. “It has gotten us to meet the outside families,” Farr added. “It gives us a chance to get more personal with the residents also.” Last week, outdoor visitation guidelines were discussed at the state level, and Wright sees this as a positive for residents. “There’s requirements to be met and we have to obtain permission,” she said. “Hopefully, that will help.” —SPJST—

State Merit Grant Essay: SPJST Superheroes Unite! By Macy Narro of Lodge 17, New Tabor - District One Congratulations to Macy who received a $1,500 grant to the college or university of her choice. SPJST has come a long way and has definitely seen a lot of superheroes since 1897 when it was chartered with 782 members and 25 lodges consisting primarily of C z e c h farming immigrants. Although the founding father’s primary goal was to provide the members with the economic security of fraternal life insurance, they also had a purpose of making the members feel at home in their new homeland. These founding fathers were the first SPJST superheroes. The Czech immigrants learned to be better American citizens from their association with the SPJST. Today, our society is comprised of over 42,000 members and 100 lodges with members of all ethnic backgrounds and all walks of life. All of these members and lodges came from normal people showing superhero powers. Merriam-Webster defines a superhero as: A fictional hero having extraordinary or superhuman powers; also, an exceptionally skillful or successful person. When you think of a superhero, you may think of Superman, Batman, or even The Hulk who fight crime. When I think of a superhero, I think of the many people who make a difference in this world. There are many individuals within the SPJST who are real-life superheroes who deserve our gratitude, from the youth club presidents, to youth leaders, to supreme lodge officers, all the way to members who display superhero powers. Every single

person can make a difference and be their own version of a superhero. I consider myself an SPJST superhero. My SPJST adventure began literally when I was born. As a life-long member of the SPJST and being very active in my youth club since the age of five, I have had the opportunity to show my superhero powers through my leadership at Leader-InTraining Camp, district summer camp, and many more. I have also grown as an individual and leader and feel that younger members look up to me as their “superhero.” The SPJST is, always has been, and always will be a huge part of my life. One of my favorite adventures has been dancing the Ceska Beseda, and what an adventure it has been! The SPJST continues to appreciate the unique heritage of the founders of our organization. Our Czech ancestors were strong in customs, especially their music and dances. I am proud of my Czech culture and feel that the SPJST has instilled in me the importance of preserving the Czech heritage. I have danced the Ceska Beseda since the age of six at numerous events including the Kolache Festival, District and State Youth Achievement Days, community events, and local nursing homes. Our youth group also celebrates Czech Heritage month in October by baking cookies for local school staff, truly superheroes in our community. This is a great way to not only let our schools know they are appreciated, but also celebrates the Czech heritage that we are proud of. These events have given me a chance to learn more about Czech language, history, and culture. Being a superhero requires courage and taking a leap. When I first joined the youth club, I was unsure. I remember the first time that I participated on the ropes course at camp. The camp director had to literally push me off the platform. I was so scared and frightened, but I did it, I took a leap. Being a superhero requires

you to show courage and bravery, even though you are scared. Younger members look up to me to be their “superhero” at camp and youth events, and the SPJST has taught me the skills to conquer my fears, fight diversity, and be a good leader. There is no other fraternal organization that provides such an outstanding youth program to its members. SPJST has taught me self confidence that I may not have found anywhere else. Through my involvement in the SPJST, I have had the opportunity to participate and interact with many superheroes within the community and organization. Each year, our youth club makes homemade Valentine cards and treat bags for residents of nursing homes in our community. We deliver them just before Valentine’s Day. This is perhaps my favorite community activity we do all year. I love to go and visit with the residents and make their day special. These residents consider all members of our youth club superheroes when we visit. I also participate in many local charity events such as delivering stuffed animals to the local emergency room, donating items to the Rainbow Room, Adopt-ASoldier donations, and local food pantry donations. One of the many community service projects we participate in is Join Hands Day. Each year, our youth club joins hands with our adult lodge and the local cemetery association and takes the time to clean up our local cemetery. We clean up by picking up old flowers and replacing them with new ones. After cleaning, the cemetery is more pleasant to see for those who visit. These are all superhero acts that the SPJST provides its youth members. There are many stereotypes as to what a superhero is. Superheroes can come in all shapes and sizes, all ethnicities, and all walks of life. They may be portrayed as big, strong, and muscular, but in the SPJST, anyone can be a superhero; whether big or small, you can make a difference. —SPJST—

SPJST – Superheroes Unite! Royalty Speech by State King Koby Stone Today, more than ever, we need superheroes in our community to unite and heal the problems we face in our world. However, when I think of superheroes uniting, I think of the Avengers movies and how the superheroes teamed up to save their world. These superheroes are very smart, skillful, and powerful. I believe that we have SPJST superheroes among us because growing up within the SPJST community, I have acquired knowledge, skills, and power. The superheroes in the Avengers were all very intelligent, and this particular knowledge allowed them to overcome their adversaries. SPJST has given me knowledge through camp experiences as a young child. This knowledge has given me the courage to learn more and become a better person. The knowledge I have acquired through SPJST has helped me excel in my academic endeavors and my extracurricular activities. Each one of the Avengers have their own super skills, whether it may be martial arts, archery, or marksmanship. SPJST taught me some of those skills like archery and balancing through the high ropes. But, by far the most important skill SPJST has taught me is the ability to inspire young children. I will continue to perfect my skills and develop as a person to help the young children become strong and confident individuals . . . so one day they, too, can inspire young children. Some Avengers have their own special powers, but their greatest power is working as a team in unison. When SPJST members work together, there is nothing they can’t accomplish. I have learned great teambuilding skills which has made me a more powerful person. These powerful skills will help me make a difference. Although I don’t possess supernatural powers or strength, I possess skills to unite with other individuals to make a positive impact on this world. This confidence comes from the lessons I’ve learned through the SPJST community. The SPJST organization has made such a powerful impact on my life. I would like to close by stating that I and all my fellow contestants stand before you today ready to unite and make a difference as your future SPJST superheroes. —SPJST—

SPJST—Superheroes Unite! Royalty Speech by State Queen Holly Jones Captain America once proclaimed, “The strength of this country isn’t in buildings of bricks and steel, it’s in the hearts of those that have sworn to fight for its freedom.” Just like America, SPJST’s strength isn’t in its lodge buildings; it’s in its members who have fought to keep the fraternalism alive for generations. The SPJST superheroes of my life have used their special powers to help mold me to be a superhero for future generations. Watching the efforts of non-profits and fraternal organizations like SPJST join hands to fight for our health and freedom ignited my passion to volunteer. As my number one champion and “Superhero Mom,” my mother has set the example for me and my four siblings as a volunteer with church, school, and SPJST. She has helped me identify other superheroes in my life that will stand by me, rescue me when needed, and help me develop my own superpowers. She followed in the footsteps of other “Superhero Seniors,” like my grandmother, who was an SPJST youth leader for more than 20 years. Many respected leaders have exemplified hard work even into their 70s and 80s. The district and state youth counselors have united to create a youth program that has been the cornerstone of our family from aunts and uncles, to cousins and siblings. In monthly meetings, quarterly district events, and annual events like Youth Achievement Day, parades, festivals, summer camps, and Corpus Christi Getaway, I’m surrounded by the support of my SPJST family and have learned so much about my Czech heritage. I can’t wait for our events to get back to normal, especially my opportunity to attend Leaders-in-Training camp to strengthen my leadership skills and become a positive influence to younger campers, We are all regular people by day and must use our superpower values of strength, honesty, kindness, trust, and hard work to uphold the ideals of the SPJST youth pledge: Seeking brotherhood, Pledging benevolence, Joining hands Supporting humanity and Trust in my ability to make this world a better place. That makes a true Superhero, and you can count on me, as a lifetime SPJST member, to continue the servant leadership and fraternalism that has been such an influence on my life - forever. —SPJST—

State Fraternal Director shares September updates District Youth Counselors’ Summer Meeting Greetings all! Even though COVID19 is still around, District Youth Counselors and I met on Saturday, August 15, 2020, at Camp Kubena to review our 2020 SPJST Youth Program and to make adjustments to the program for 2021. What a wonderful group of DYCs we have leading the program! Please know, we are planning for a normal year in 2021; however, there is also going to be a “Plan B” in place in the event that COVID-19 continues to keep us separated.

Youth Leaders Workshop The 2021 Youth Leaders Workshop will be held at the SPJST Home Office on Saturday, January 16. This training is an excellent opportunity for you to improve your skills as an SPJST youth booster helping youth on their SPJST journey. This 2021 event is earlier in the year than past workshops. The reason for the change is that our SPJST youth year now begins on January 1. In the past, you will recall, the youth calendar

year commenced on June 1. The 2021 SPJST Youth Program handbooks will be updated this fall and be available for distribution as early as December. With regards to attending the Youth Leaders Workshop, participants will have two options: (1) Attend the workshop in person at the SPJST Home Office on the morning of Saturday, January 16; or (2) Participate in the workshop via GoToWebinar. Youth leaders and assistant youth leaders are expected to participate in this meeting. The youth have an important role to play in the development of our Society. For that reason, we are also encouraging lodges that do not have youth clubs to designate someone to participate in the workshop either in person or online. We want to spread the word far and wide of all the SPJST Youth Program has to offer! What’s more, SPJST sales agents are also encouraged to join in and learn more about the SPJST Youth Program and the important role it can play in the life of a young SPJST member. Youth Development Workshops: New and Improved for 2021 We are in the construction phase of the 2021 Youth Development Workshop scheduled for Saturday, January 30, 2021. Whose invited: Youth leaders, youth, and parents. To cut down on

I am so proud of you and all your accomplishments this year. This was certainly not how we thought the royalty competition would have been conducted in 2020. It was a learning experience for all of us. I hope our royalty families were surprised when Director of Communication Melanie Zavodny, Fraternal Services Specialist Tammy Martinez, and I showed up to surprise them and present them with their awards. I am hoping the State Royalty will have some events that they can attend at the end of 2020 and into 2021. The projects will be accessible on the spjst.org webpage under the Youth Program tab. If you should need a pdf file of the Vestnik project, please contact me by email requesting the project, and I will email it to you. SPJST Youth Meetings, Play It Safe Throughout the spring and summer months, SPJST youth clubs were excused from any requirements to adhere to their established regular meeting schedule. Moving forward, the Supreme Lodge will continue to excuse youth clubs from their established monthly meeting schedules. That is not to say you are prohibited from meeting. Any decision on the part of a lodge to host faceto-face youth meetings should rely on a risk-based approach. Several youth clubs have taken advantage of meeting online. The spjst.org website includes some basic information that will enable you to get started. We will be happy to work with you on this if you decide to pursue this option. If you have any specific questions relating to setting up an online meeting please know that you may contact Vestnik Editor/Director of Communication Melanie Zavodny at melaniez@spjst.com for additional information. Christmas Ornament Contest Your District Youth Counselor will be informing you of the Christmas ornament contest in your district. This information will also be presented in the Vestnik as it becomes available. 2021 Scholarship Applications SPJST Scholarship applications will be available in September and must be

Monday, August 24, 2020 completed and submitted to the Fraternal Department by February 1, 2021. If you have a graduating senior in your lodge, please let him/her know he/she can apply for the SPJST General Scholarship. Only active youth club seniors can apply for both the SPJST General Scholarship and Leadership Grant. Please see the letter from Supreme Lodge President Brian Vanicek on page 4 with information about the scholarships. If you have questions, please contact Sandra Dubcak at 800-727-7578 or email her at sandrad@spjst.com. You

Sam Houston — President of The Republic of Texas

Was an American soldier and politician. An important leader of the Texas Revolution, Houston served as the first and third president of the Republic of Texas, and was one of the first two individuals to represent Texas in the United States Senate. He also served as the sixth governor of Tennessee and the seventh governor of Texas, the only American to be elected governor of two different states in the United States. Houston was born in Rockbridge County, Virginia. As a teen Houston and his family migrated to Maryville, Tennessee. Houston later ran away from home and spent about three years living with the Cherokee, becoming known as Raven. He served under General Andrew Jackson in the War of 1812, and after the war, he presided over the removal of many Cherokee from Tennessee. With the support of Jackson and others, Houston won election to the United States House of Representatives in 1823. In 1827, Houston was elected as the governor of Tennessee. Houston settled in Texas in 1832. After the Battle of Gonzales, Houston helped organize Texas's provisional government and was selected as the topranking official in the Texian Army. He led the Texian Army to victory at the Battle of San Jacinto, the decisive battle in Texas's war for independence against Mexico. After the war, Houston won election in 1836 and his second term in the 1841 in the Texas presidential election. Houston played a key role in the annexation of Texas by the United States in 1845, and in 1846, he was elected to represent Texas in the United States Senate. He joined the Democratic Party and supported President James K. Polk's prosecution of the Mexican–American War. He later voted against the Kansas–Nebraska Act because he believed it would lead to increased sectional tensions over slavery, and his opposition to that act led him to leave the Democratic Party. He was an unsuccessful candidate for the presidential nomination of the American Party in the 1856 presidential election and the Constitutional Union Party in the 1860 presidential election. In 1859, Houston won election as the governor of Texas. In this role, he opposed secession and unsuccessfully sought to keep Texas out of the Confederate States of America. In Memoriam Expression of Sympathy SPJST Lodge 202, Jourdanton officers and members extend their deepest sympathy to the family and friends of GEORGIA E. MAREK, age 81, of Pleasanton, Texas, who passed away on August 7, 2020. Georgia was born September 15, 1938, to Jim and Helen Zezula in Jourdanton. She was a sweet-spirited, loving wife, mother, grandmother, and greatgrandmother. She and her husband, Johnny, started and grew Kuntry Georgia E. Marek Korner Convenience Stores and Kuntry Korner Steak and Eggs and the Kuntry Inn Motel together. She was the perfect business partner, making pies for the cafe and taking care of the rooms at the motel, and she never missed a day retrieving the mail. One of her biggest joys was celebrating yearly with her son Raymond’s “birthday” - not his actual birthday, but the day he received his heart transplant. The emotional joy to know that because of this new heart, he would have many more years with her and his family. She loved her trips with her husband, as the two of them would travel to Vegas together. Georgia loved to sew and make kolaches. She was also an avid crafter and puzzle master. She would feed the deer and birds at her house so that when she would rise in the mornings, she could throw open her curtains, sit back, and just watch peacefully as they would eat outside her windows. Georgia was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 57 years, Johnny P. Marek; son Raymond R. Marek; grandson Jonathan Jeffers; and brother-in-law Albert Marek. She is survived by daughters Sharon LaGrange and husband Edward, Regina House and husband James, Teresa Titzman, and Melissa Marek; daughter-inlaw Elaine Marek; sisters Katherine Marek, Henrietta Lowak and husband James, Edith Chesshir and husband

Walter, and Barbara Flippen; brother James Zezula and wife Leann; grandchildren Staci Zertuche, Jennifer Pena, Kristin Grantham, Kimberly Bosquez, Michelle House, Kelly House, Samantha Jeffers, and Kirkland Jeffers; greatgrandchildren Britney Rogers, Emilie Rutherford, Hailey Tashi, Stephanie Tashi, Daniel Tashi, Shy Bosquez, Braden Jeffers, Emma Calhoun, Trey Grantham, and Kylie Bosquez; and great-great-granddaughter Tynlee Grantham. Visitation was held Thursday, August 13 at Hurley Funeral Home in Pleasanton from 5 to 7 p.m. with the reading of the rosary at 7 p.m. Funeral mass was held Friday, August 14 at St. Andrew Catholic Church at 10 a.m. followed by burial in St. Andrew Cemetery No. 2. Pallbearers were James House, Edward LaGrange, Johnny Bosquez, Randy Grantham, Daniel Zertuche, David Pena, and Barret Jacob. Anyone wishing to sign the online guestbook, share memories, or issue condolences to the family may do so at www.hurleyfuneralhome.com. Donations may be made in Georgia’s memory to St. Andrew’s Catholic Church at 626 Market St. Pleasanton, Texas 78064. Mrs. Marek was a member of SPJST Lodge 202, Jouranton for many years and faithfully attended and supported its activities. She will be missed. Fraternally, Bettie House, Secretary —SPJST—

Summer time for fun and junk food In the Czech Republic, summer is (usually) a time of fun fairs, day trips, and swimming and bathing in lakes and open air pools. Those events and locations are associated with a special type of food, or junk food, to be more precise. Without it, the experience would not be complete. For example, you cannot go to a fun fair - pouť and not try a grilled smoked sausage - klobása with mustard - hořčice served on a paper plate and washed down with soda pops, limonáda or beer - pivo - from a plastic cup - v kelímku. Grilled sausages are usually served at swimming pools, too. Another typical lunch at the swimming pool is fried cheese smažený sýr - which is a cholesterol bomb. It is a slab of hard cheese coated in breadcrumbs and deep-fried in

oil. After that, it’s time for a dessert. You can choose zmrzlina - ice cream, cukrová vata - candy floss (literally “sugar cotton”), or turecký med - literally Turkish honey - a chewy mixture of honey, sugar, egg whites, and chopped hazelnuts. (It should not be confused with Turkish delight whose primary ingredients are sugar and starch.) Another favorite fun fair sweet is žužu - a brightly colored marshmallowtype of candy which is often several centimetres thick and up to half a metre long. The ultimate fun fair classic, though, is perníkové srdce - a gingerbread heart. They are approximately the size of a book and usually have the words “with love” or “I love you” written on them in sugar icing. Gingerbread hearts are the typical presents that boys bring back to their mums or give their girlfriends, who then usually keep them till they are bone dry. You can imagine that a day at a Czech fun fair or swimming pool usually results in many upset stomachs. The important thing is not to eat all those delicacies all at once. And that’s all for this edition. Have a very good summer and till next time, dobrou chuť - bon appétit! ~ Pavla Horáková http://www.radio.cz/en/section/abc/summer-time-of-fun-andjunk-food-1
