Larry W. Pflughaupt Memorial Scholarship Fund Established SPJST announces that the family of Larry W. Pflughaupt has established the Larry W. Pflughaupt Memorial Scholarship Fund. Brother Larry was a 60-year SPJST member. His affinity for SPJST goes back to when Larry was 15, and he was honored as the first Prince of Lodge 88, Houston—a royal title which he earned at an early age and one which set the standard for what was to follow. Throughout his teens, Larry remained active by participating in the lodge youth program and later the adult activities, including performing in the English plays. Lodge 88, Houston members elected Brother Larry as president in 1982 and 1983. He initiated Czech language instruction at the lodge during his first year as president. It was a program that would continue for the next 15 years. It was also in 1982 that Brother Larry became an SPJST sales representative.

Brother Larry was first elected SPJST District Five Director in 2000, a position which he held until 2016 when he opted to turn over the reins to the next generation. He also represented his lodge as a delegate to numerous SPJST Conventions. To contribute to the fund in loving memory of Brother Larry, please visit https://spjst.org/pflughaupt-scholarship/. Donations can also be mailed to: Larry W. Pflughaupt Memorial Scholarship Fund c/o SPJST PO Box 100 Temple, Texas 76503

Lodge 47, Seaton Youth Club members, left to right, Travis Ordogne, Kal-el Martinez, Andrew Ordogne, and Valora Young decorate boxes for packaging 3,456 meals for kids in need with 576 bags of food through Kids Against Hunger-Central Texas. “It was an honor to once again partner with SPJST Lodge 47, Seaton Youth Club,” said Jeff Pedigo with Kids Against Hunger-Central Texas. “Youth Leader Amber Bartek and her team worked hard to organize the event, and we are grateful to be able to come alongside young leaders to help provide meals for others.” The youth members packaged 576 bags of Kids Against Hunger food to provide enough food for 3,456 meals.

All donations will be acknowledged. For more information about SPJST Endowed Scholarships, please see the article that begins on page 16 or contact SPJST President Brian Vanicek at 800-727-7578, ext. 139. —SPJST—

Christmas Time Next week’s Vestnik will feature a summary of the 2020 SPJST Christmas Ornament Contest. Thanks to all participants. Usually during Christmastime, several SPJST lodges and youth clubs around the state host the SPJST Float in community parades. This year will be different as most of the parades have been canceled. SPJST was honored to participate in the 38th Annual Fort Worth Parade of Lights. This parade has grown to become one of the largest illuminated parades in the United States and a regional family tradition. Instead of the traditional event in downtown Fort Worth, the parade pivoted to a virtual broadcast that was prerecorded in various downtown locations and featured signature floats, musical artists, and entertainers. The parade will be broadcast in the Dallas-Fort Worth area on TXA-21, Downtown Fort Worth’s YouTube channel, and on the Parade of Lights’ Facebook page from 7 to 9 p.m. on Friday, December 24.

From the SPJST State Fraternal Director State Fraternal Director shares December updates Fraternal Focus Live is November 10 and You’re Invited Supreme Lodge President Brian Vanicek would like to thank all members who attended the Fraternal Focus live webinar on November 10. If you missed the webinar you will find it on the SPJST Website, the Fraternal Focus page. Supreme Lodge President Brian Vanicek will host the second Fraternal Focus webinar on Tuesday, December 8 at 7 p.m. The webinar is open to all SPJST members; however, it is open to the first 500 who register. Here is the link directly to the page: https://spjst.org/ fraternal-focus/ or you can click on “Events” in the upper menu of the website. Once you register for the webinar, you will receive a confirmation email that you registered for the event. SPJST Meetings, Play It Safe If you are going to have a face-to-face social or meeting, please review tips below. Moving forward, the Supreme Lodge will continue to excuse lodges from their established monthly meeting schedules. That is not to say you are prohibited from meeting. Any decision on the part of lodge to host face-to-face meetings should rely on a risk-based approach. Precautions to consider include actions to prevent transmission between people, and where to hold the meeting and how it can be modified to make a safer environment. Meeting organizers are requested to provide all necessary supplies – masks, hand hygiene stations, hand sanitizer or soap and water, tissues and distance markers. Deciding not to meet remains an option that should be considered or when precautions cannot be effectively implemented or adequately communicated. Additionally, lodges are encouraged to consider incorporating online teleconferencing as a way to stay connected. The spjst.org website includes some basic information that will enable you to get started. If you have any specific questions relating to setting up an online meeting please know that you may contact Vestnik Editor/Director of Communication Melanie Zavodny at melaniez@spjst.com for additional information.

100 Pennies Scholarship Fund Drive Everyone spread the word! October 1 started the SPJST 100 Pennies Drive to benefit the scholarship fund. Through your generous donations, SPJST has been able to continue to provide scholarships to members who wish to further their education. Donations of any amount will be accepted and added to the general scholarship fund that is maintained by the Home Office. No amount is too small or too large. The 100 Pennies Scholarship Drive will run through March 31, 2021. Officer Elections The end of 2020 is rapidly approaching. Many are asking, “Do we have elections due to COVID-19?” Many lodges are now meeting face-to-face, others are using video conference and social media. If you have not met or discussed officer elections, you still have the month of December to have elections. I have had some lodges say they were going to leave the officers in place for 2021, and others are having elections. While lodges are electing new officers, this would also be an excellent time to check the back page of the Vestnik for your meeting date and time. Many lodges are not listed. This would be an excellent time to get the information listed. If any of this information has changed, please contact Vestnik Editor/Director of Communication Melanie Zavodny at 800-727-7578 and have her update your lodge information. Important Paperwork Everyone, please know that the forms listed below are very important in receiving your enhanced premium refund and other incentives. Please return these

forms even if there are no changes from the previous year. Fraternal Activities Coordinators, it is very important to enter and complete your hours by Friday, January 15, 2021, to receive those refunds and other incentives. Please look for the 2020 Officer Listing that was mailed out in November from Receptionist Tamara Gettys. This listing needs to be updated and turned into the Home Office after you have your elections. All other deadline dates remain the same. The forms and due dates are: January 4, 2021 - New Officers Listing form - address, phone listing and emails January 15, 2021 - Year-End Fraternal Incentive Reporting Hours February 19, 2021 - Outgoing Officer Awards May 15, 2021 - 990 and 990-T to IRS and copy to Home Office With the election of new officers, do not forget to honor your officers who have given their time and dedication to your lodge. Honor your outgoing leaders by giving them an outgoing officer plaque. Any officer who is not elected to serve in 2021 and does not seek reelection in future years is eligible. The recipient must be a current SPJST member and must be active at the time of selection. The plaques should be awarded at your local lodge meeting. The form is available on the spjst.org website. This is the direct link: https://spjst.org/outgoing-officer-forms/ and can be completed online. 2021 State Tournaments Please know we were planning to

have our SPJST State Tournaments for 2021. Due to increasing COVID-19 cases, we will look at postponing the tournaments until further notice. I know that our members look forward to these tournaments, and Tammy and I do, too. However, we are thinking of you and your families safety during this time. Thank you for your understanding. 75 Years Ago, Remembering Pearl Harbor, December 7, 1941 Editor’s Note: The following article was requested by Honorary District Seven Director Thelma Hrncir to be reprinted. Sister Hrncir is a member of SPJST Lodge 79, Corpus Christi. She served as Supreme Lodge District Seven Director from 1984 to 1992.

Remembering a friend and Pearl Harbor I was 10 years old the day Pearl Harbor was bombed. All four of my brothers served in World War II, and all survived . . . a real miracle. ~ Honorary District Seven Director Thelma Hrncir v v v v v

Dear Brother Brian, In looking through some clippings, I found this one about Emil Matula, Vestnik issue, December 7, 2016. He was a personal friend of mine and helped me get elected as District Seven Director. Maybe you would like to put it on file and run it again in December 2020. Thank you, Thelma Hrncir —SPJST—

By Greg Bowen New Braunfels Herald-Zeitung December 6, 2012 Photos by Laura McKenzie Editor’s Note: This story by Greg Bowen appeared in the December 6, 2012, issue of the New Braunfels Herald-Zeitung. Pearl Harbor survivor and World War II veteran Emil Matula joined SPJST on December 12, 1946, and was a 67-year member of SPJST Lodge 133, San Antonio when he passed away on December 27, 2013. Brother Matula served on the SPJST Publication Committee from 1976 to 1988. His wife Evelyn passed away on November 21, 2016. Emil Matula was there, 75 years ago today, when the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor. The 94-year-old remembers firing a pistol up at the Zeros as the enemy fighter planes strafed his barracks on the infamous morning of December 7, 1941. “I have no idea if I hit one,” he said. “They were too fast.” Matula was a 23-year-old United States Army sergeant stationed at Schofield Barracks, one of the Pearl Harbor airfields targeted in the Japanese surprise attack. Matula and his buddies on the 35th infantry football team had played for the base championship the day before the attack, and had stayed out late celebrating, even though they lost the game. The Granger farm boy with a sixth grade education was sleeping that Sunday morning when the first wave of attackers rained down their torpedoes and bombs and bullets. Matula, remembering, holds out his hand and makes a side-to-side rocking motion. “My bunk was doing like this,” he said. He ran outside in his skivvies and watched the attackers come. “The planes flew right between the barracks and shot at us. They flew in so low I could see the Japanese pilots squeezing their triggers.” The unarmed GIs stampeded to the supply room for their rifles and ammo, Matula said, but the supply room was locked, and the supply sergeant was off duty for the weekend. Matula, a buck sergeant, was the ranking man. “I gave the order to chop off the lock,” he said. The men grabbed fire axes and broke into the supply room and claimed their weapons and ammo. “I was worried,” he said. “In peacetime,

you get court-martialed for doing that.” But peacetime had ended for Matula and his fellow American fighting men. When the second and final wave of Zeros attacked, the soldiers were ready. “We had machine gunners on the roof,” Matula said. “Some of the men had rifles. I had a pistol. This time, we fired back when they strafed us.” Matula remembers an officer giving an order to ready Schofield’s airplanes for battle. “But all the planes were burning,” he said.

nel. At Luzon, Matula took a sniper’s bullet through the face. “The sniper shot out three of my teeth,” Matula said. Each time he was hurt, the Army doctors patched him up and sent him back into action. After one particularly bloody fight, Matula was given a “battlefield commission,” in which he was promoted from first sergeant to lieutenant. Asked if it was a promotion for bravery, he responded that it was more a case After Pearl Harbor Less than a month later, Matula and the of all of the unit’s officers and senior en35th were deployed to Guadalcanal, listed men having been “lost.” So the where Allied Forces were waging their Army put Matula in charge and sent his first major offensive against the Empire of unit back into the fray. At 12 noon, a prayer of thanks was given by President Vincent Newman, and everyone enjoyed pizza provided by the lodge. Desserts were provided by members. I would like to thank Emma Kujawa and her kitchen committee for getting everything ready for us. President Vincent Newman called the business meeting to order at 1:15 p.m. and led us in the Pledge of Allegiance. All officers answered the roll call except Treasurer Bradley Stavinoha and Special Funds Chairman Dan Natho. SPJST Endowed Scholarships Members and lodges wishing to make a positive difference in the life of a young person and at the same time establish a lasting memorial may establish or contribute to an SPJST Endowed Scholarship. The scholarship may be established in your name or the name of the individual you wish to honor. SPJST Endowed Scholarships may be established starting at $10,000. By definition, an endowed scholarship is one in which the principle remains intact and only the interest is awarded each year. Once established, your scholarship will be managed by SPJST. Your endowment creates a permanent funding source that will grow over time and will support deserving students today and in the future. In establishing an SPJST Endowed Scholarship, you have the opportunity to set the criteria for your SPJST Endowed Scholarship. For example, you may wish to direct your scholarship fund to reward high achievement students who are pursuing a specific field of study. Other criteria for you to consider are specific colleges or universities, areas of academic interest or extracurricular involvement, community service, or hometown. Please know that in establishing restrictive criteria, you will be limiting the pool of qualified recipients. Also, in accordance with IRS publication 526, located at http://www.irs.gov/pub/irspdf/p526.pdf, a donor may not select a specific individual as a beneficiary of their gift, i.e. scholarship recipients. SPJST Endowed Scholarships differ from others in that they are truly the gift that keeps giving. An SPJST Endowed Scholarship is a perpetual gift because only the interest is applied towards the scholarship while the principle continuously grows. Endowed scholarships are a wonderful way to honor a loved one or link your legacy with the future. The minimum gift needed to establish a named, endowed SPJST scholarship is $10,000. This amount can be paid all at once or in payments. Once the fund reaches the $20,000 amount, the scholarship will be awarded annually in the honoree’s name. Until $20,000 is reached, the interest gained is reinvested in the fund. At the primary donor’s request, an endowed scholarship will be awarded every other year, provided that the endowment balance totals at least $10,000. There are many ways to fund an endowment, including gifts of cash, bequests, securities, life insurance, retirement assets, or properties. If you have any questions about the information that I have presented or if you would like to proceed with the establish-

VĚSTNÍK ment of an SPJST Scholarship, please give me a call at 800-727-7578 and I will be happy to assist you. Fraternally, Brian Vanicek Supreme Lodge President —SPJST—

Czech-American Madeleine Albright First Woman to Serve as Secretary of State Madeleine Albright was born Marie Jana Korbel on May 15, 1937, in Prague, Czechoslovakia. She went on to serve as the United States Ambassador to the United Nations from 1993 to 1997. She became the first woman to hold the cabinet post of Secretary of State, serving from 1997 to 2001. Ms. Albright was the daughter of a Czechoslovakian diplomat. In 1939, her family fled to England after Nazis occupied Czechoslovakia. The Korbel family returned briefly to Czechoslovakia after World War II before immigrating to the United States in 1948. Ms. Albright graduated from Wellesley College and married Joseph Albright, a member of a well-respected newspaper-publishing family. After earning a master’s degree, she worked as chief legislative assistant for Senator Edmund Muskie. After receiving her doctoral degree, she took on the role as President Jimmy Carter’s national security adviser. In the 1980s, Ms. Albright worked for several nonprofit organizations, and her Washington, D.C. home became a salon for influential politicians and policymakers. She also was professor of international affairs at Georgetown University. After Bill Clinton was elected President, he named Ms. Albright as Ambassador to the United Nations in 1993. She gained a reputation as a fierce advocate for American interests in the United Nations operations. Her nomination to the position of Secretary of State was unanimously confirmed by the Senate in 1997. During Ms. Albright’s time as Secretary of State, she remained a defender of military intervention and a champion of human rights. In 2000, she became the highest-ranking U.S. official to visit with North Korean leader Kim Jong II to negotiate terms for ending their nuclear program. In 2001, Ms. Albright left government service and founded the Albright Group, a consulting firm based in Washington, D.C.

Throughout the spring and summer months, SPJST youth clubs were excused from any requirements to adhere to their established regular meeting schedule. Moving forward, the Supreme Lodge will continue to excuse youth clubs from their established monthly meeting schedules. That is not to say you are prohibited from meeting. Any decision on the part of a youth club to host face-to-face youth meetings should rely on a risk-based approach. Precautions to consider include actions to prevent transmission between people, where to hold the meeting, and how it can be modified to make a safer environment. Meeting organizers are requested to provide all necessary supplies – masks, hand hygiene stations, hand sanitizer or soap and water, tissues, and distance markers. Deciding not to meet remains an option that should be considered or when precautions cannot be effectively implemented or adequately communicated. Additionally, lodges are encouraged to consider incorporating online teleconferencing as a way to stay connected. The spjst.org website includes some basic information that will enable you to get started. We will be happy to work with you on this if you decide to pursue this option. Several youth clubs have taken advantage of meeting online. If you have any specific questions relating to setting up an online meeting, please know that you may contact Vestnik Editor/Director of Communication Melanie Zavodny at melaniez@spjst.com for additional information.

Monday, November 23, 2020 Youth Leaders Workshop: Attend In-Person or Online The 2021 Youth Leaders Workshop will be held at the Home Office on Saturday, January 16. This training is an excellent opportunity for you to improve your skills as an SPJST youth booster helping youth on their SPJST journey. This 2021 event is earlier in the year than past workshops. The reason for the change is that our SPJST youth year now begins on January 1. In the past, you will recall, the youth calendar year commenced on June 1. The 2021 SPJST Youth Program handbooks will be updated this fall and be available for distribution as early as December. With regards to attending the Youth Leaders Workshop, participants will have two options: (1) Attend the workshop in person at the SPJST Home Office on the morning of Saturday, January 16; or (2) Participate in the workshop via online video conference. Youth leaders and assistant youth leaders are expected to participate in this meeting. The youth have an important role to play in the development of our Society. For that reason, we are also encouraging lodges that do not have youth clubs to designate someone to participate in the workshop either in person or online. We

I would also like to extend an invitation to our new Vice President Delisle Doherty to join us during the workshop to discuss bringing in new members and getting to know our youth leaders. Youth Development Workshops: New and Improved for 2021 We are in the construction phase of the 2021 Youth Development Workshop scheduled for Saturday, January 30. Who’s invited? Youth leaders, youth, and parents. Since the youth were unable to be together this summer, District Youth Counselors (DYCs) discussed having two workshops held simultaneously — one at the Home Office and the other at Camp Kubena. Districts can choose where to attend.

Camp Chaperone Training Online in 2021 In 2021, SPJST Summer Camp Chaperone Training is mandatory. We will be using an online Texas law-based Child Abuse awareness and prevention program. This training program takes approximately one hour to complete.

Once all chaperones have registered for SPJST camps, I will setup the training and send out email notifications. The certification for this course is for a twoyear period. Camp Kubena chaperone training will be conducted via online video conference. SPJST will offer a number of training dates to choose from. It will be mandatory to attend using video and not voice call-in. The training will be interactive with participants. Camp Kubena training will be conducted by Camp Director Rob Clift and State Fraternal Director Frank Horak. All chaperones must make a commitment to be at camp from start to finish in 2021. No exceptions! Chaperones who come in late or depart early leave us shorthanded, and the ratios needed during camp are then incorrect. If you are not there, we have to scramble to find help to replace you. We need a total commitment from each chaperone. Vestnik Project The December Vestnik Project will focus on Madeleine Albright, first Ambassador to the Czech Republic and Secretary of State. From this point forward, the monthly Vestnik Projects will be presented for completion and submission online. The projects will be accessible on the spjst.org webpage under the “Youth Program” tab.

President našeho řádu Freddie Kaluža zahájil schůzi, vzdali jsme poctu americké vlajce a republice, pro kterou stojí, uctili jsme památku zemřelých členek a obětí epidemie. Naše tajemnice Janice Kaluža přečetla jména úřadníků a všichni byli přítomni a přítomné.

nota. Naše finanční tajemnice Mary Lou Mynář přednesla pěknou finanční zprávu a v době epidemie nebyly žádné příjmy a vydání. Pak byly provedeny volby úředníků a jednomyslně byli znovuzvoleni úřadníci a úřednice do dalšího funkčního období. Epidemie způsobila mimořádné okolnosti naší práce a tak se budeme snažit a pracovat k tomu, abychom mohli úspěšně pokračovat v naší činnosti. President našeho řádu ve Westu, Tx. Freddie Kaluža pak schůzi ukončil a měli jsme velmi bohatou večeři. Příští schůzi, pokud to epidemie dovolí, by se měla konat první pátek v březnu roku 2021. Těšíme se na hojnou účast členstva. —SPJST—

the father (or head of the family) sliced an apple crosswise. If the slice revealed the image of a perfect star, and the seeds were plump, it was believed that a peaceful new year of good fortune and health was instore for the family. Each member of the family then ate a bite of the apple. This shimmering red apple ornament, with brilliant glazes and accents of glitter, crafted of glass in the Czech Republic, will be a keepsake for years to come. Legend of the Nutcracker Red - No. C19-15 / Green - No. C19-16 $17.50 each Nutcracker figurines originated in the Erzgebirge area of Germany as early as the 1700s. The first nutcrackers were made of wood due to the ample supply of wood in the region. They were

VĚSTNÍK traditionally dressed as soldiers and kings. Villagers took satisfaction in having these authoritative figures perform the menial task of cracking nuts and some may still crack nuts, but the real joy is their colorful presence decorating the home. One wonders why the nutcrackers are never seen with smiles on their faces. The people making them in the early years conveyed their everyday hardships into the dolls that they created. Their lives were hard, the working conditions bad, and they did not get paid very well. The book, The Legend of the Nutcracker and Traditions of the Erzgebirge, speaks of an old German folktale describing how the nutcracker came into being. It tells about a farmer who offered a reward to anyone who could help him crack the walnuts that grew on his tree. A carpenter told him to saw the nut in half while a soldier told him to shoot the nut. Finally, a puppet maker came along with a beautiful puppet made of wood and painted in bright colors, which had strong jaws that could be used to crack the walnuts. This method worked, and

the farmer rewarded him by giving him his own workshop. The dolls have been made for the past 250 years in Germany, and it is believed that nutcrackers bring good luck and protect the house and its inhabitants. The red and green nutcrackers in our collection were mouth blown in the Czech Republic. Each one is individually hand painted and will be a valued possession and collectible. The Tradition of the Pickle No. SL-10 - $7 There are several versions of this tradition, each attributing the legend to different count r i e s . According to German tradition, as the Christmas tree was decorated, a pickle was hidden in the innermost branches of the tree. On Christmas morning, the first child to find the pickle was rewarded with an ad-

This tradition is observed by many families today, and as the children grow, the family purchases smaller and smaller pickles to make them more difficult to find. The pickle tradition encourages people to take time to enjoy the moment with family and friends and, while searching for the pickle, to enjoy the beauty of the tree and its many ornaments along with the beauty of the season, rather than focusing immediately on the gifts under the tree. Czech Christmas Traditions Czech Christmas Tree Decorations The Christmas tree represents a symbolic ladder to the heavens. As a result of this, ornaments are hung on the tree depending on what their symbolic position is in life. As an example, vegetables and fruits are closest to the earth. Therefore, they are hung on the lower third of the Christmas tree. Houses, churches, people, and animals should be placed in the middle region of the tree. Birds, angels, moons and stars should hang from the middle of the tree to the top to symbolize their closeness to the heavens. Angel: Represents the angel who appeared before Mary, asking her to be the mother of Jesus

This book, written by Czech citizens in the Old Country during World War I, was written to express gratitude to the Czechs in America who answered their call for aid during this war to assist them at a critical time when their homes, livelihoods and very existence had been decimated by the war. The book was translated to English and published by TCGS in 2019 in an effort to show Americans today the rigors of war and to instill pride in Czech Americans because of the way we helped our cousins in the homeland in their time of need. The book is loaded with much information about the beginnings of this noble effort and also includes surnames and many photos, many of which have identified people in them. Because many people are reluctant to shop at stores during the Covid Pandemic, this book would make a terrific and easy-to-obtain Christmas gift for those you love. To order the book, please send a check for $48 along with your shipping address

Popcorn: Signifies the rope Joseph held as he led the donkey to Bethlehem Walnuts: Are for the gifts from the three wise men Oranges: A special fruit only available during the Christmas season Wheat: A symbol of life, prosperity and nourishment Cloth as the base of the tree: Represents Jesus’ swaddling clothes Apples: Remind us of Adam and Eve White dove: Placed near the top of the tree to evoke peace Carrot: Often given to a new wife to bring good luck in the kitchen Mushrooms: Considered to be lucky and mean good fortune is at hand

Pine cones and evergreen trees: Symbols of eternal life Corn: Symbolizes prosperity, fertility Pickle - hidden on the Christmas tree: Whoever finds it first on Christmas morning, gets an extra gift left by St. Nicholas (Svaty Mikulas). Houses and Churches: Symbols of village life Farm Animals: Traditional symbols of everyday village life Birds: Symbols of joy and cheerfulness Swan: Symbol of gracefulness Pineapple: Symbol of friendship and hospitality Owl: Symbol of wisdom Musical Instruments: Symbolizes the joy that music and singing brings during the Holiday season Stars, Moons, and Angels: Symbolizes the closest you can get to Heaven During the Dark Ages, natives of remote northern Bohemia - present day Czech Republic - originated an art form in glassblowing which not only holds a unique place in the 4,000-year history of this ancient art, but has become a cherished part of Christian tradition. The Bohemians had learned this skill (a heritage of Egypt) from wandering Venetian tradesmen. They used it to create glass ornaments for adornment of the fir tree in their Yule celebration of the winter sun solstice. Early Christians adapted this custom of decorating the evergreen to their celebration of the birth of Christ; thus the Christmas three was born. Down through the centuries, the glass blowers of Bohemia became famous throughout the world for their blown glass Christmas ornaments. The root of early glass blowers remained in Bohemia, where beautiful ornaments are still produced, using forms over 1,000-years old.

VĚSTNÍK Christmas Dinner Customs Czech Christmas dinner - December 24 - is connected with a great number of different customs, rules and superstitions. Very few of them are still observed today, and for good reason. It must have been quite a challenge to put the dinner together and go through with it without a mistake if all the customs were to be followed! Here are some of them: No lights should be lit in the house before the first star comes out. After it does, dinner is served. ❖ The table should be set for an even number of guests. An odd number brings bad luck or death. ❖ An extra plate can be used to even out the number of guests. An extra plate should also be prepared in case an unexpected guest or a person in need comes by the house at dinner time. ❖ The legs of the table can be tied with a rope to protect the house from thieves and burglars in the coming year. ❖ No one should sit with their back to the door. ❖ Christmas dinner consists of nine courses including soup, bread with honey, carp, potato salad, fruit - dried, fresh or canned, dessert - apple strudel or vánočka - Christmas bread, and other foods. ❖ No alcohol should be served on Christmas Eve. ❖ No one should ever get up from the Christmas table before dinner is finished. Doing so brings bad uck and death in the family. ❖ Everyone should finish their dinner and leave nothing on the plate. ❖ The first person to leave the table after dinner will be the first one to die in the coming year - that is why everyone should get up from the table at the same time. ❖ Any leftovers from dinner (crumbs, fishbones, etc.) should be buried around the trees to ensure they will bear lots of fruit. ❖ All household animals should be fed after dinner so that no one goes hungry on Christmas Eve. ❖

Magical Powers of Foods and Plants Certain plants, spices and foods are said to have special qualities and have been an important part of Czech Christmas celebrations throughout history: Garlic An essential part of Christmas that should not be missing at any Christmas dinner. It is believed to provide strength and protection. A bowl of garlic can be placed under the dinner table. Honey Honey is believed to guard against evil. A pot of honey can be placed on the dinner table.

Mushrooms Mushrooms give health and strength. A traditional meal called kuba, prepared from dried mushrooms, barley, garlic, onions, and spices, used to be served as the main meal in the past. Mushroom soup can be served before dinner. Sheaf of Grain A bundle of grain dipped in holy water can be used to sprinkle the house to prevent it from burning down in the next year. Poppyseed, Peas, Wheat, Barley If given to the hens on Christmas Eve, lots of eggs will be laid in the coming year. Vánočka - Christmas bread Feeding a piece of vánočka to the cows on Christmas Eve will ensure that there will be lots of milk all year. Putting a few vánočka crumbs in front of the bee hive will make sure that the bees will produce enough honey next year. Throwing a piece of vánočka into the well will ensure good quality of the water.

The Pouring of Lead A piece of lead is melted over fire and then poured into a container of water. The resulting shape will tell the pourer's destiny. Foretelling Marriage There are lots of Christmas customs that help young girls in the family find out if they will get married in the year to come. Cherry Tree Twigs - Barborky On December 4, St. Barbora's Day, an unmarried girl is supposed to cut a twig off of a cherry tree and put it in water. If the twig blooms by Christmas Eve, the girl will marry within a year. The Throwing of the Shoe An unmarried girl is supposed to throw a shoe over her shoulder and towards the door. If the shoe lands with the toe pointing towards the door, the girl will marry within a year. The Shaking of the Elder Tree An unmarried girl is supposed to shake an elder tree and if a dog barks, she will marry a man who lives in the direction from which the dog bark came.

Apple If the goats are given apples on Christmas Eve, their milk will be sweet.

Money and Wealth Although Czech Christmas has traditionally been focused on spirituality and family rather than on material possessions, there are a few customs relating to money and wealth.

Foretelling the Future The foretelling of the future and predicting the well-being of the family in the coming year is connected with many popular Christmas customs some of which are still practiced today.

Fish Scales Fish scales should be placed under Christmas dinner plates or under the tablecloth to bring wealth to the house. Carrying a fish scale in a wallet all year will ensure that money will not run out.

Floating of Walnut Shells Little boats are made out of empty walnut shells and each family member places a little burning candle into a shell. Everyone's shells are then floated on a bowl of water. If the shell makes it across the bowl, its owner will live a long and healthy life. A shell that sinks brings bad luck to its owner. Cutting of the Apple After Christmas dinner, every person present at the table cuts an apple in half (crosswise, from the stem down). Both halves are shown to everyone around the table. If the core is shaped as a star, it means that everyone will get together next year in happiness and health. A fourpointed cross is a bad omen and means that someone at the table will fall ill or die within a year.

Other Christmas Customs and Superstitions ❖ He who fasts all day until dinner will see the golden piglet on the wall. ❖ After Christmas dinner, no field is to be crossed until the midnight mass. He who does so will die within a year. ❖ He who fails to give a present on Christmas Eve will be met with poverty. ❖ A pregnant woman will know whether she is carrying a boy or a girl once the first Christmas Eve. ❖ Visitor enters the house. If the visitor is male, she will have a son. http://www.myczechrepublic.com/czech_culture/czech_holidays/christmas_superstitions.html#other http://www.nebraskaczechs.org/czech_christmas_traditions.htm
