Delisle Doherty appointed SPJST Supreme Lodge Vice President Dear Brothers and Sisters, Greetings from the SPJST Home Office. Please join me in welcoming Brother Delisle Doherty as Supreme Lodge Vice President. He will take over for Brother Richard Hrbacek who is leaving due to unexpected personal circumstances. I enjoyed working with Richard and know that his decision to leave early in his tenure as Supreme Lodge Vice President was difficult. We wish him well. Brother Doherty’s Supreme Lodge appointment becomes effective November 9. Delisle has been serving as the Regional General Agent (RGA) for SPJST District Five, one of the most consistent districts in terms of production in recent years. An SPJST member since 2005, Delisle previously served as SPJST State Field Representative in Districts One Five and Six. He and his wife, Lila, have two grown children and five grandchildren, all members of SPJST Lodge 196, Houston-West. Brother Doherty has a proven background in life insurance sales, business management and community service. Prior to owning his own business, he

joined American General in 1991 where he earned a position on the President’s Club as one of the top life agents in the company. As the owner of a printing and marketing company, he routinely consulted with small- to medium-sized businesses, helping them to develop and implement successful marketing strategies. In 2009, he founded and has been the guiding force for the Christian Business Fellowship Association, a business networking group for Christian-based businesses. Over the past 10 years, the group has helped to raise more than $536,000 for charity. “With my community engagement experience and leading youth programs, I look forward to working closely with the Fraternal Department,” says Delisle, adding, “This will ultimately enable the smaller lodges to have the opportunity to grow and once again become a driving force in their communities.” Fraternally, Brian Vanicek Supreme Lodge President —SPJST—

Readers Write ✍ State King Koby Stone helps at accident scene Our SPJST youth are showing that they care what is going on around them. On Tuesday, October 6, 2020, there was an accident at the red light in Rogers, Texas, involving an automobile and an 18-wheeler. A woman and a young girl were in the automobile, which was damaged very badly. Our own 2020-2021 SPJST State King Koby Stone and his mother and sister were also at the scene of the accident. Koby immediately called 911. He then made sure everyone was okay and proceeded to calm the young girl as she was very upset and crying. King Koby and his family jumped right in to help in a tragic situation. This just shows everyone that we have great young members that will do whatever it takes in a turbulent situation. We are very proud of all of our SPJST youth and members who are willing to jump

in and assist others that need help without hesitation. Thanks to Koby and everyone who helped that day. Fraternally, Ruth Hanusch Lodge 47, Seaton —SPJST—

Commentary We have many challenges which we are facing. Today, we are at a crossroad of where does SPJST go from here. It is up to us as directors and officers to make sure all decisions are made in the best interest of SPJST to preserve our future. It is our fiduciary responsibility to see to it that we continue on the path of a fraternal organization. This is what our charter dictates, and we cannot deviate from that course. Over the last several years, we have gone away from that fraternal mission and have been only concentrating on being an insurance company alone. We are continuously writing certificates to individuals without encouraging them to become active in our local lodges. Our lodge system is beginning to fail because of this. Most of our agents are only insurance agents and are not actively involved in their local lodge. Our Regional General Agents (RGAs) are usually the leading agents in sales for the district when their job is to lead other agents to be active and productive. We have even told them they do not have to go to lodge meetings to get to know the members. Our Home Office is distant from the membership except for Brian and Melanie.

VĚSTNÍK We cannot continue on this same path, and it is up to us to make changes and decide what we want our organization to be. We have great potential and a bright future if we do things the right way. We must put aside petty jealousies and thoughts and have our business hats on. We cannot let personalities, attitudes, likes and dislikes, and selfishness get in the way. We must be transparent to our membership and not do things which are a detriment to SPJST. We must start making decisions to put us into the 21st century where we are lagging behind. We must think progressively and admit that we do not have the answers to all our issues, and we must seek help for solutions. I ask that we come together as a united team and not criticize one another. We must be strong and willing to make tough decisions no matter what the consequences. We need to rethink the purpose of the entire organization and put us where we will be a leader of fraternals and not a follower. We can only be strong when we are united. As the old saying goes, “A chain is only as strong as its weakest link.” We don’t need to have any weak links. Bobby Knight once said, “Successful people make a habit of doing things failures don’t like to do.” John Wooden defined success as “peace of mind which is a direct result of self-satisfaction in knowing you did your best to become the best you are capable of becoming.” We must be a success, and the future of this organization lies in our hands. Let’s all be ready to meet the challenge together. “United we stand, divided we fall.” Opportunities exist; let’s take advantage of them. Requests for our Vice President: 1. Make yourself known to the membership by visiting lodges and using virtual meetings. 2. Develop a uniform agent education program to be used throughout the entire state. 3. Develop and educate our Regional General Agents (RGAs) to be teachers to educate the agents using the same education process for all. 4. Conduct agent education sessions and seminars regularly, preferably virtual and in the evenings where all can participate. 5. Require RGAs to contact - by phone or in person - agents who do not attend the education classes or are not producing. 6. Require RGAs to regularly attend lodge meetings in their districts. 7. Require RGAs to attend various functions where SPJST is involved and make their presence known. 8. Require sales agents to attend their local lodge meeting at least twice a year. 9. Work with the Fraternal Department to promote the organization. 10. Educate the agents on the purpose of SPJST and bring the Home Office closer to the membership, which at this time is distant. 11. Develop a form to complete which is not an application but a fact-finding for clients who are questionable about being insurable. 12. If we are going to hire RGAs who know nothing about SPJST, have a special education program just for them.

13. Require RGAs to concentrate on getting agents to be productive and not spend so much time selling themselves. 14. We must have a combination of full time and part time agents working for us, but a uniform education program should apply to all regardless of status. 15. Concentrate on quality and not quantity. Czech kroji passed to next generation of youth Beseda dancers SPJST sends a special thanks to Betty Dobesh of Lodge 88, Houston. Betty sent a box of beautiful Czech kroj along with this note: “Here are the Czech kroj that (late husband) Gene and I had made by Maggie from West - two skirts; three vests; three blouses; apron; overlay; and a shirt. I hope these can be useful for SPJST kids who are still dancing. “When the late Tillie Helmcamp was youth director at Lodge 88, Houston, we were more than happy to assist her in

bringing Lodge 88’s youth club back into existence regardless of the thoughts of the older generation who felt youths should be seen and not heard. “Our daughter Debra made us proud by representing Lodge 88 in the youth club state competition as 88’s queen and pointed out this very fact. The youth of SPJST are the only way it will continue to prosper and stay true. She stated facts they did not want to hear and adhere to at the time, but are realizing now.” —SPJST—

Scenes from Ennis Sewing Circle

Several Ennis Sewing Circle members are pictured with next year’s quilt donation for the Junior Sokol, which is a red, white, and blue patriotic design.

Ennis Sewing Circle Ennis Sewing Circle has met only three times since the COVID-19 shutdown earlier this year. Since March 12, 2020, we have met on June 11 with seven members, on September 10 with 10 attendees, and on October 6 with 10 in attendance. Many of our older members are still not comfortable coming out to a group, but our younger members were eager to resume activities. The good news is that we have signed up two new members these past two months. In June, we worked on baby quilts, which allowed us to set up small quilting frames socially distanced around the room. In September, a few quilters distanced around the large frame to start quilting our Christmas raffle quilt, while others worked again on baby quilts. Some of these baby quilts will be donated to the Hope Clinic. Ann Clagett volunteered to finish the Christmas quilt at home. In October, we first stretched Anita Kubin’s quilt, which was pieced by her mother years ago. We then stretched the quilt we are making to donate to the Junior Sokol gymnasts for their fundraiser. Lillie Macalik volunteered to take this quilt home to finish. We still enjoyed our potluck luncheons and realized the benefit of small gatherings is that with less food on the buffet, we don’t eat ourselves into a stupor. After lunch, President Liz Moucka Krajca called the meetings to order with the Pledge of Allegiance. This month, we were sad to report that two of our members passed away within the past few weeks - Bessie Laznovsky and Marie Vrla. We honored their memory with a moment of silence and recited “The Lord’s Prayer” for them and our sick members and family. Secretary Dolores Vrana read the mi-

nutes of the last meeting, and Treasurer Anita Kubin reported our finances. Vice President Irene Prachyl read a thank you card we received for our donation to cemetery upkeep in memory of Bessie Laznovsky and Marie Vrla. In November, we plan to work on Maggie Holy’s quilt. We will also have our food drive when members bring canned goods or cash to benefit the needy during this holiday season. Our usual Christmas party in December will include a show-and-tell as we did not meet in July for our traditional white elephant sale and show-and-tell. We do not quilt in December. Irene Prachyl plans to start another beginner’s quilting class in January 2021. We meet at the Sokol Club Room in the morning on the second Thursday of the month. She also reminded everyone about the November 15 deadline to submit their best picture of their Christmas ornament to be judged virtually by State Fraternal

Director Frank Horak. She even gave us a blank Christmas ornament to help get started. Rules can be found at https://spjst.org.christmas-ornamentscontest/ She also reported on important upcoming dates for 2021: Youth Leader Workshop will be held on Saturday, January 16 and the Youth Development Workshop will be held on Saturday, January 30. District Three Youth Achievement Day is scheduled for Sunday, April 18 at Lodge 25, Ennis. State Youth Achievement Day is planned to be held on Saturday, July 31 in Temple. More details will be given as events get closer. Youth Leader Lynda also reminded us that we are responsible for completing and submitting our Vestnik projects which are at spjst.org. Additionally, we are also able to submit anything of interest we want to report on, there is a tab at

spjst.org, and we can even attach pictures if we want. Youth Leader Lynda also reminded us about the Christmas party for lodge members on Sunday, December 6, 2020. More details are posted in the lodge letters’ section of this week’s Vestnik. She said not to forget to bring canned goods for the canned good drive and a dessert to share. It was a good meeting, and we got a lot of information. We were all able to practice safe protocol. Fraternally, Josh Tucker, age 11 Reporter —SPJST—

Different ways children can give back (Editor’s Note: Please consult your local laws and regulations to confirm this article’s content aligns with pandemic mandates currently in place in your city.) Children can learn about the importance of giving back at an early age. Youngsters who become accustomed to volunteering and supporting charities may be more inclined to continue doing so as they get older. Parents magazine reports that the number of parents with young children who are volunteering and getting involved has increased in recent years. As family schedules continue to be busy, charitable work done as a family unit can be an ideal way to spend time together and engage in activities for the greater good. Kids can get involved in many different charitable efforts. Quite often children are forward thinkers and innovators and may have their own unique ideas in regard to volunteering or charitable work, but the following are some ways kids can get involved in giving back.

Donate food. Children can easily gather food to donate to a food pantry in the area. Set aside a bag to donate and pick one item for the donation bin each time the family visits the supermarket. When the bag is full, deliver it to an organization in need. Children also may work with their schools to have a collection box on cam-

pus and encourage other families to donate. Participate in a “walk” or “run.” Walks or runs for a cause are popular events in which participants solicit pledges tied to their performances. While these are traditionally group efforts, COVID-19 may change the way

future walks are organized. Participants may be able to do a walk or run on their own and still raise funds for local charities. Be a buddy. Children can be paired up with a senior at a nursing home, a child at a children’s hospital, or even a kid who is new

cutters before your baking session so youngsters have as much fun as possible. Kids may have more fun if they get to make Santa Claus, Frosty, or Rudolph cookies.

Get involved in a cleanup campaign. Picking up litter from parks, beaches, streets, and even around school grounds can be a great foray into volunteer work. Go beyond just removing trash. Organize a planting event or remove brush and weeds as well.

Make a mess. Don’t be afraid to get a little messy when baking with children. Moms and dads may love a clean kitchen, but kids tend to have more fun in the kitchen when things get a little messy. Douse each other with a little flour and make a joke of things if some ingredients find their way onto the counter or the floor instead of into your mixing bowl.

Collect funds. Children can learn the joy of charitable giving by starting small. Keep a change collection jar at home and toss change from shopping excursions or coins they may find while out and about in the community. When the jar is filled, cash in the coins and donate to a charity of your child’s choosing. Children can begin learning about the benefits of being charitable individuals at a young age when their parents introduce them to volunteerism and other ways to give back. (MS) —SPJST—

How to involve kids with holiday baking The holiday season is steeped in tradition. Many holiday traditions are centered around food, with much of the focus on all of the decadent treats and desserts taking center stage at many family gatherings. Many parents hope to involve their children in as many family holiday traditions as they can. Holiday baking is one kid-friendly tradition, and parents can make it even more so by taking a few simple steps before they get started. Purchase kid-friendly baking equipment. Bakers rely on lots of tools to make cookies, cakes, and other delicacies. That equipment is even available in kids’ sizes. Kids may be more excited about baking if they have their own equipment, and such gear also can make it easier for them to lend a hand. A spatula made for youngsters can make it easier for kids to move cookies from a baking sheet to a platter, while colorful measuring cups and their own whisk can excite youngsters about baking.

Parents can make the holiday baking that much more fun by letting their kids pitch in this year. (MS) —SPJST— Lodge 80, Holland Youth Club members enjoyed a great time at the October meeting with a Halloween party on Saturday, October 31, 2020. —Submitted by Kelly Taisler, Youth Leader

Plan ahead. Seasoned bakers know that it’s imperative to have the right supplies, including ingredients, on hand before beginning a baking session. That’s even more necessary when baking with kids, who might not be as patient as moms and dads hope if a baking session has to be paused to run to the store for a missing ingredient or to dig out some tools from the back of the pantry. Plan ahead by setting everything out and assembling all the necessary ingredients the night before you plan to bake.

Delegate wisely. Young kids may want to do everything mom and dad do, but baking is a delicate science that requires careful attention to detail and a strict adherence to recipes. So it’s important that parents delegate wisely when involving children in holiday baking. Whisking, stirring, and topping off cookies with frosting and sprinkles are fun, kid-friendly tasks. Add some fun foods to the menu. If you plan to bake holiday cookies, purchase kid-friendly holiday cookie

2020 Youth Club Member Update - Merit Points and Meeting Attendance Third Quarter Merit Points and Meeting Attendance The totals below in the column labeled “Pts” are merit points earned in the January to December 2020 youth year. This is total merit points for the 2020 youth year. Please see “What is the Merit Point System?” for complete information about the contest. The number in the column labeled “Mtgs” is the number of meetings each youth club member has attended from January to December 2020. Please see “What is an Active Youth Member?” below to determine number of meetings needed to participate in youth activities. What is the Merit Point System? Youth club members earn merit points for participating in SPJST lodge, district, and state activities. At the end of the youth year, points are totaled and the youth with the highest points in the youth club receive cash awards. Contest Dates January 1 to December 31, 2020 Merit Point Contest Age Divisions Junior—Entering Kindergarten or Age 5 to Age 12 Teen—Age 13 Years to High School Senior Rules The youth leader or assistant youth leader is responsible for keeping track of the merit points for each active member of the youth club. The points are to be sent to the State Fraternal Director on the Quarterly and Merit Point Reports each quarter. Youth club members are also encouraged to keep up with their points and turn them in to the youth leader on a quarterly basis. This system helps both the youth leader and the youth member keep better records of youth participation. Current, official Quarterly and Merit Point Reports, available from the State Fraternal Director, may only be used in the Merit Point Contest. The Quarterly and Merit Point Reports sent to the State Fraternal Director by the youth leader will be kept on file for at least six months following the conclusion of the contest.

Merit points are earned for only those activities listed under Youth Point Values. An activity can only earn points in one category on the point sheet. When in doubt about any activity earning points, contact the State Fraternal Director prior to the contest conclusion. Everyone will be subject to the same rules in every contest. Failure to comply with any rule shall mean immediate withdrawal. Merit Point Awards Awards are presented on the district and state levels in the junior and teen merit point contests. At each District YAD, the Home Office presents first through third place awards to top qualifying junior and teen youth club members. The top three junior and teen youth club members with the most points in each district will receive awards. In the event of a tie, all who tied for first through third places will receive the award. A youth may only receive the state award once in the age division. State Teen and State Junior awards are presented at State YAD. District Junior and Teen Point Awards First Place - $30 Second Place - $25 Third Place - $20 What is an Active Youth Member? A youngster with a current SPJST insurance certificate may enter the youth program the youth year that he/she will be entering kindergarten. To be considered active, youth club member must attend a majority (seven) of the monthly meetings during the year. The youth must attend the majority of these meetings at his/her home youth club. In those instances where a lodge does not have a youth club, the youngster may attend adult lodge meetings or the meetings of another youth club. The youngster will be eligible for camp and Youth Achievement Day (YAD) after the completion of his/her kindergarten year. Active youth members must be single and not be pregnant or a parent. The age of the youth on June 1 of the

current youth year will be the recognized age in the SPJST Youth Program (camp, YAD, contests, etc.). The 2020 youth year began January 1 and ends December 31. Youth club eligibility ends when the youth graduates from high school. Dist Ldg Name Pts Mtgs

In our street Hello, and welcome to this edition of SoundCzech, Radio Prague’s Czech language course in which you can learn Czech phrases with the help of song lyrics. For this edition, the song is V naší ulici - or in our street - sung by Voxel. Look for the word - ulice meaning street. Voxel sings that as he walks down the street and smiles at the world, people think he has completely lost his mind. The lyrics go přes okna svých aut, zatmavený do černa, už dávno nevidí jak je tahle ulice nádherná - which means that through the darkened windows of their cars, everyone has long since forgotten just how beautiful this street really is.

To get the sack at work is octnout se na ulici - to wind up on the street. Someone who is out roaming the streets se bloumá po ulicích. Jít po ulici is to walk down the streets, and to trudge through the streets is vláčet se ulicemi. If as you trudge down the street you decide to buy take-out, that food is jídlo prodávané přes ulici - which literally means food sold across the street. If it is very crowded on the streets then you can say na ulici se to hemžilo lidmi - the streets were teeming with people. Those taking part in a parade pochodují ulicemi - walk the streets. Jít do

ulic is to take to the streets, for instance in the case of a protest. If a protest becomes serious and takes on a life of its own it may turn into vláda ulice - or mob rule. A dead end or a cul-de-sac is called a slepá ulička. An ulička is a smaller street, such as a lane or an alleyway. Ocitnout se ve slepé uličce is to reach a stalemate, or as some might say, to find oneself up against a wall. That’s all we have time for. Thank you for learning Czech with me, and na shledanou. ~ Clare Profous https://english.radio.cz/our-street-8219821

TCGS presents third group of 2020 Christmas ornaments Shown here are six additional Christmas ornaments which evolve from a tradition, a legend, or a symbol of Christmas. Included is the favorite of Czechs everywhere, the Vesele Vanoce greeting. The ornaments are available from Texas Czech Genealogical Society (TCGS), and may be ordered for shipment by contacting Nancy Machu at 512971-4284 or emailing her at nbmachu@gmail.com. Shipping charges will be added, and will depend on the number of ornaments ordered. Purchases may be made at our gift shop in Temple by appointment only. Please call the above phone number to set an appointment, should you wish to see the ornaments prior to ordering.

Candles with Holly - No. OR-205 -$22 Holly is a symbol of life in the bleak and cold months of winter. The bright reds and green colors of the berries and leaves were symbols of rebirth and life. When the deep red berries appeared on the holly plant, the season of feasting and merriment began. In early years, Father Christmas decorated his hood with holly, which represented the crown of thorns that Jesus wore when He was crucified, and the red berries represented the blood He shed for our sins. Candles represent Christ, the Light of the World. “I am the light of the world. No follower of mine shall ever walk in darkness; no, he shall possess the light of life.” (John 8:12) Candles also remind us that we are to be light to others, to show them the way to Christ, and when hopelessness sets in, to remember that the darkness cannot overcome Christ’s light. The Czech Greeting and Traditions Ornament - No. OR-210 - $11 Vesele Vanoce, “Merry Christmas,” is a greeting all Czechs can say. The reverse side of the ornament shows Czech Christmas customs. It reads: “On the evening of December 5, St. Nicholas legendarily descends from a gold cord with an angel and mentor to reward or admonish children. At suppertime on Christmas Eve, a chair is left vacant for the Christ-child. After supper, candles on the tree are lighted. Tree décor includes straw and paper stars, Bohemian glass ornaments, fruits, nuts, cookies, and intricately painted eggshells – symbolizing birth. After midnight mass, children often sleep on straw by the manger, reminiscent of Christ’s birth. On January 6, Epiphany, priests write C+M+B over the doors of homes, placing a cross between letters which stand for the initials of the Magi and a Latin phrase meaning “May Christ Bless This Home.”

The Pewter Nail No. OR-211 - $12 The pewter nail is a reminder of the nails used to construct Baby Jesus’ manger, as well as the nails used in Christ’s crucifixion on the cross. The message that accompanies this ornament tells the story of Jesus, God’s love and His greatest gift of all, given freely to those who follow Him. The Holy Family No. C19-101112 - $50* (short supply) The Holy Family, consisting of the Virgin Mary, Saint Joseph, and Baby Jesus, are the central figures of Christmas for Christians everywhere. According to Matthew and Luke, Jesus’ birth took place in Bethlehem during the time of Herod the Great. The family had gone to Bethlehem to be counted in the census. This set of three beautiful, mouth-blown glass ornaments, was crafted in the Czech Republic. The colors are deep and vibrant, with gold accents abounding. The Holy Family set of Christmas ornaments is sure to be a treasure for years to come. The Three Wise Men No. C19-789 - $52* (short supply) Traditional nativity scenes usually include the three wise men who visited J e s u s shortly after his birth, bringing gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. The wise men were sent to find Jesus, at the request of King Herod. They followed the star until it stopped over the place where the Child lay. They were overwhelmed with joy. They knelt down, paying him homage, and gave Him their gifts. They then returned to their homes in the east by a different route. These three wise men, also handcrafted in glass in the Czech Republic, are adorned with regal robes of intense, deep royal colors, accented by gold. They go perfectly with

the Holy Family ornaments and together, will make a beautiful statement about the real reason for the season. Flower Ornament No. CO-15110 - $10 This delicate, glass ornament, made in the Czech Republic shows a flower design in red, flocked onto a clear ball, approximately three inches in diameter. It is an ornament that will be cherished this year and for years to come. —SPJST—

TCGS: Christmas Giving Book of the Month Texas Czech Genealogical Society (TCGS) offers its newest publication, Czechoslovaku Pamatnik as our November and December Book of the Month. This book, written by Czech citizens in the Old Country during World War I, was written to express gratitude to the Czechs in America who answered their call for aid during this war to assist them at a critical time when their homes, livelihoods and very existence had been decimated by the war. The book was translated to English and published by TCGS in 2019 in an effort to show Americans today the rigors of war and to instill pride in Czech Americans because of the way we helped our cousins in the home-

land in their time of need. The book is loaded with much information about the beginnings of this noble effort and also includes surnames and many photos, many of which have identified people in them. Because many people are reluctant to shop at stores during the Covid Pandemic, this book would make a terrific and easy-to-obtain Christmas gift for those you love. To order the book, please send a check for $48 along with your shipping address to Nancy Machu, 3337 Bianco Terrace, Round Rock, Texas 78665. Shipping charges are waived during November and December.
