From the Desk of SPJST Vice President Delisle Doherty It’s Your Life

“Lead By Example”

God has given all of us skills and talents, but He is more interested in the character of the man/woman who uses these abilities. Certainly, we can be good examples to others who watch us model the skills we use in our work. They can learn a lot from us. But they can learn even more by watching how we treat our spouses and children, and our fellow employees and associates, how we respond to annoying people and difficult situations, and how we talk about corporate executives when they make poor decisions.

In the business world, we may expect people to look out for themselves, to do whatever it takes to climb the employment ladder, and to use people every step of the way. When you go out of your way to care for someone who is hurting, overlook petty offenses and take steps to resolve big problems, and exude a positive attitude while being ruthlessly honest about difficult situations - people notice.

All of us have a hundred choices to make each day. We may not recognize many of them because we’re so steeped in habitual attitudes and behaviors, but we have constant opportunities to demonstrate love or selfishness, faith or doubt, hope or complaints, delight or disgust. Habits can be broken, but not without conviction or tenacity to make different choices. If we choose to be an example to those around us, we are in for a great ride, seeing people’s lives touched through us. Don’t miss out!

If you are a lodge leader, no matter how much the lodge is struggling, show others that just being there is a blessing. Whether there are five who show up, or 100, it’s still a blessing. Others will recognize this, and you will see more coming. Think about who is the best “leader by example” you know? What is that person’s impact on others?

One way to stay positive is focus on the benefits SPJST has to offer. It’s not a building you can meet at; it’s tools that can bring communities together. It’s leadership for children. It’s activities for seniors. It’s bringing families together. You can make it a community of positivity.

If you know anyone who wants to be a member of your lodge, you are welcome to have them call me, and I will point them to the best qualified agent to help you grow. For that day, the agent will work for you. Every lodge has 196 agents working for them. You get me the info, and I’ll get you the agent.

Watch for a new and exciting member referral program coming in July. It can help you grow your lodge, make a positive impact on your community and for your family.

Have a safe and blessed week. Know my door is always open - figuratively and literally.

SPJST announces start of lodge branding campaign

I am excited to announce Phase 1 of our lodge branding program. Phase 1 consists of the Home Office delivering two 4-foot by 8-foot signs to every lodge that has a building. Each sign will be printed on aluminum and laminated to keep the colors from fading too fast in this Texas heat.

We are not asking anyone to replace their current signage - unless they want to - but to add this near the street for all cars passing by to see. Each sign will look the same so when a person passes a lodge hall, they will know it is SPJST. We are asking the lodges to put the signs up near the street. If you want it to face the street with one sign and put the other somewhere else (stored in case the first gets damaged), on the building or somewhere else on the lot, it’s up to you. If you want it two-sided, you can do that, too.

SPJST is paying for all the signs so we ask that you install it or pay to have it installed. Generally, people install these signs on 4-foot by 4-foot posts or metal poles.

Phase 2 will be for those lodges who meet regularly in one location: We will talk to that location, and if they agree, we will install a 4-foot by 8-foot sign that says your lodge meets there.

Phase 3 will be looking at the lodges without buildings and working to put up signage to create a branding campaign to let the community know you are there.

The goal is to have the signs printed and delivered within 60 days. Your District Director was asked to get contacts for each lodge so we can update each of you on the progress and when to deliver the signs.

We are currently working on posters for the lodges. I will update everyone when we are ready to move forward.

Four new brochures have been designed, too. Once they are printed, we will get them to each lodge and the agents.

Phase 2 of that project will be to convert each brochure to Spanish. I will keep you updated on that progress.

Watch for a new member referral program to be introduced this month. You will love it!

Things are happening, and we are very excited to work with the lodges to help with new ideas and renewed growth for 2021 and beyond. Delisle Doherty SPJST Vice President —SPJST—
