Pondělí is the day after Sunday po nděli. Středa is the day in the middle of the week (middle - střed). Čtvrtek is the fourth day of the week (fourth - čtvrtý). Pátek is the fifth day (fifth - pátý). Sobota has its origin in the Biblical Sabbath. Neděle is the day when the Lord orders us not to work (dělat - to work; nedělat - not to work). This explanation of the origin of the words may perhaps help you to remember them better.

In most of Europe, there was one more holiday at Easter - Pondělí Velikonoční - Easter Monday. That was the day for gaity. After six weeks of Lent, the time of sacrifice, came Easter Day - Hod Boží velikonoční as a day of rejoicing because of Christ’s Resurrection, but that still was a day full of deep religious meaning - a solemn day.

Adding of another holiday on Monday gave opportunity for more wordly signs of joy. The boys, from toddlers to young unmarried men, were pursuing girls with gaily decorated whips made of young willow branches. The girls could avoid a “whipping” only by offering the fellows fancily-painted Easter eggs kraslice. Some were fresh eggs while the more elaborately painted ones were only shells adn were fine examples of folk art.

In the Eastern part of the country, the customs also called for practical jokes like pouring of cold water over an unsuspecting victim, etc. It was not unusual to have a dance on Monday just to give an outlet to the vivacity of the people pinned up during Lent.

Another occasion for a celebration is the Namesday or the birthday. In America, one’s Namesday is rarely celebrated, but in the Czech Republic, it is put on the same level as the birthday. On the days of popular patron saints, such as St. Joseph, St. Wenceslaus - Václav, or St. Anna, it is not uncommon to have bands of musicians going from one Joseph’s house to another and serenading him.

Also dances are often organized on the nearest Saturday and named Josefská, Václavská, or Annenská zábava. The word, zábava, stands for entertainment, but is often used also to mean dance. On one’s Namesday or birthday, people are congratualted. All can be preceded by “I wish you” - Přeji vám or Přeji Ti. The first is the polite, and the latter is the familiar form.

Lodge 92, Fort Worth hosts tarok tourney this Saturday

The Paprskar Memorial Tarok Tournament IX will be held this Saturday, July 31, 2021, at SPJST Lodge 92, Fort Worth - National Hall, 3316 Roberts Cut Off in Fort Worth (Lake Worth). Registration and snacks will be served from 8 a.m. to 8:45 a.m. Six onehour rounds begin at 9 a.m. Meal is included at noon break. Trophies will be awarded for the top four scores. Cash will be awarded for the top four scores. Registration is $25 per player.

Kolache Festival set for September 11 in Caldwell

Burleson County Chamber of Commerce’s 36th Annual Kolache Festival will be Saturday, September 11, 2021, in Caldwell, Texas. The festival will be downtown “on the square,” and Caldwell is known as “The Kolache Capital of Texas.” Admission is free of charge.

Friday, September 10 is the pre-Festival dinner and dance at Burleson County Expo Center, sponsored by Burleson County Czech Heritage Museum. The Czech meal is 5:30 to 7 p.m. and will consist of Slovacek Sausage and kraut with fixings. Music and dance by The Lost Cause Band is from 6 to 9:30 p.m. Tickets will be pre-sold only. The demonstration will include baking a batch of kolaches from start to finish. Giving techniques on the best way to process the dough so that the kolache will fit the criteria that the judges in the contest are wanting to see as well as making kolaches for your family and friends enjoyment. Kolache, the original Czech wedding pastry, is a favorite national dessert throughout Czech Republic. The art of baking kolaches came with the early immigrants to Burleson County. Bakers have competed for 36 years to win the coveted title of Grand Champion Kolache Baker of Burleson County. Over the years, the bake show has grown to six divisions. It is open to adult and youth nonprofessional professional and champion bakers.

The Kolache Bake Show will be held at First United Methodist Church at 306 West Fox Street in Caldwell. A. The Kolache Bake Show is open to youth, adult non-professional, and professional bakers. Youth ages nine through age 18, or still enrolled in high school as of January 1, 2021, may enter the Youth Division. Professionals are those individuals who have owned or been employed by a bakery and/or those who have received more than $1,000 in gross sales from sale of baked goods from their home or any other means.
