Nick A. Morris served as SPJST Vestnik Editor (1962 to 1969) and Supreme Lodge President (1969 to 1984). Nick’s son, 1987 SPJST State King Michael Morris, shares a story on pages 18 and 19 regarding Nick’s work prior to SPJST and his involvement in a pilot’s daring escape from (then) communist Czechoslovakia, interwoven with the timeless and enduring message of American exceptionalism and freedom.

and historic sites are included along with environmental portraits of the people associated with those sites. From the state’s wildlife, both great and small, to nature shown in not only its beauty but also its fury—wildfires, hurricanes, and floods— Earl Nottingham offers a visual compendium of events, people, places, and things that have shaped the face of natural Texas. The author logged untold miles and wore through many sets of tires to offer timely stories that would “inform, educate, entertain, and empower” readers about the outdoors. These images that capture the richness and diversity of wild Texas inspire a greater appreciation for the state’s beauty and promote a sense of stewardship for its natural treasures.

Put Health and Wellness on Your 2022 Calendar

Health and wellness. It’s the kind of thing that SPJST – as a fraternal life company – would do well to promote and that members will find beneficial. There’s an incredible amount of information out According to the World Health Organization, health is a state of complete physical, menthere just waiting to be shared. The tal, and social well-being and not merely the challenge is finding an effective absence of disease or infirmity. Wellness is way to parcel out the information an active process through which we become in a meaningful way. Beginning aware of and make choices toward a more with our live January 25 Fraternal successful existence. Focus Webcast, SPJST takes on the broad topic of health and wellness with an introductory emphasis on the importance of creating a more active lifestyle, regardless of where you reside on the age timeline. To participate in the Tuesday, January 25 Fraternal Focus webcast, visit spjst.org to register. The webcast begins at 7 p.m.

Social members enable lodges to broaden their fraternal reach Whereas the purchase of an SPJST life insurance or annuity certificate entitles one to the full range of SPJST member benefits, something not generally known is that social membership in SPJST is also available to adults 18 years of age or older. “Social membership in SPJST is an opportunity to join hands with friends and neighbors in improving your community and building your social and business network,”says SPJST President/CEO Brian Vanicek. “Social members are not eligible to vote or hold office in the lodge; however, social members may, at the discretion of the local lodge, serve on an appointed committee and may deliberate and vote on that committee. Social membership also includes an online subscription to SPJST’s twice monthly newspaper, Vestnik.” The by-law which makes social membership possible was approved by delegates of the 28th SPJST Convention in year 2000. The provision – as it appears in Section 9 (d) of our current SPJST By-Laws reads as follows: (d) Social Member.

It’s Your Life

My New Year’s Resolution is to Make No Resolutions One of the great traditions in our so-

ciety is to make New Year’s resolutions. These resolutions will make us happier, healthier, wiser, less stressful, and even richer. So they say. The one thing you can count on is every year, you will break that resolution. In fact, for many, that resolution will be recycled over and over and broken just as many times. I’ll bet many have already broken this year’s resolutions. I think it’s time we eliminate resolutions from our annual tradition. Instead create good habits. Habits change lifestyles. Good habits eliminate stress. Good habits are contagious. More impor-

tantly, good habits become permanent. Over the next few articles, I will talk about simple habits that can make your life better and the people around you. It will help create good habits that will last the rest of your life. It will help you forget about resolutions! Watch for the first habit: “If you can, you should.” My door is always open; figuratively and literally. Stay blessed, Delisle L. Doherty Vice President of Sales and Marketing 832-232-2049 “It is better to light a candle than curse the darkness.” —Eleanor Roosevelt —SPJST—

From the SPJST State Fraternal Director State Fraternal Director shares February updates Did you see the first full moon of 2022? The Farmer’s Almanac calls it the full wolf moon. As I was driving home from work on Monday, January 17 — through my rearview mirror, I could see the moon peaking over the horizon. I thought to myself, how big it was. I should have pulled over to the shoulder of the road and taken a photo. I regret not doing that. Here is a photo I found on www.skynews.com.

I hope everyone had a great start to the new year. There are members of my family that have had COVID. I was fortunate not coming down with it this year. I hope you and your family are able to avoid it and stay healthy. 2022 SPJST Lodge Membership Drive: Up, Up and Away! Introducing the 2022 membership drive and contest for all lodges. 2022 SPJST Lodge Enhanced Premium Refund Guidelines One of the most important financial benefits that the SPJST Executive Committee has extended to local lodges is the annual Premium Refund Program. The purpose of this program has been to help SPJST lodges keep their operations on a sound financial basis. The formula for calculating the refund is: 1. $1.00 for each paid-up certificate in the lodge; and 2. 1.25% of the lodge’s annual earned premium. To receive the refund in early 2023, lodges must meet the following four-point criteria:

r 1.

Hold Regular Lodge Meetings in Accordance with Section 74 of the SPJST By-Laws and Offer a Well-Rounded Fraternal Program.

Every lodge is required to hold regular meetings to discuss lodge business with its members. Service to each other — as fellow SPJST members — and service to the community is an important part of SPJST’s mission. Rather than mandating a specific number of fraternal activities that your lodge must accomplish in a given year in order to remain in good standing and qualify for incentives, the greater focus is on lodges working to host a healthy mix of “quality” events that bring value to SPJST’s community presence.

r 2.

Return All Requested Paperwork by January 15, 2023. • Form 990 or Form 990-T • Fraternal Activity Summaries • Updated Lodge Officer Listing

r 3.

Submit Routine News/Photos to the Vestnik.

Every lodge is required to submit news of upcoming events, lodge meetings, and/or meeting/event summaries and/or photographs to the Vestnik as well as to their local media. Healthy habits that can become part of your daily routine A person’s habits can have a strong impact on his or her overall health. Unhealthy habits like smoking and living a sedentary lifestyle can increase a person’s risk for various conditions and diseases. On the flip side, healthy habits like eating a nutritious diet and getting enough sleep can bolster a person’s immune system and reduce his or her risk for various ailments. Some healthy habits, like daily exercise, can be time-consuming. Busy adults may not have time to exercise vigorously each day, though the U.S. Department of

Health and Human Services urges men and women to find time for at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity each week. But not all healthy habits take up time. In fact, adults can incorporate various healthy practices into their daily routines without skipping a beat. Take the stairs. Taking the stairs instead of the elevator can have a profound effect on overall health. According to Duke University, climbing just two flights of stairs combined per day can contribute to six pounds of weight loss over the course of a single year. In addition, a study from the North American Menopause Society found that stair climbing can help postmenopausal women reduce their risk for osteoporosis and help them lower their blood pressure.

Drink more water. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention notes that water helps the body maintain a normal temperature, lubricates and cushions joints, protects the spinal cord and other sensitive tissues, and helps to rid the body of waste through urination, perspiration and bowel movements. Adults who are thirsty can choose water over soda or other sugary beverages. The CDC notes that sugary beverages like soda and sports drinks contain calories but little nutritional value, making water a healthier way for individuals to quench their thirst. Go for daily walks. Walking benefits the body in myriad ways. For example, the Harvard School of Public Health notes that women who walk 30 minutes per day can reduce their risk of stroke by 20 percent and potentially by 40 percent if they walk briskly. In addition, researchers at the University of Virginia Health System found that men between the ages of 71 and 93 who walked more than a quarter mile per day had half the incidence of dementia and Alzheimer’s disease as men who walked

Each person who sends in a referral and the referral becomes a new member — or a current member who purchases an additional certificate — will receive a $25 thank you gift card.

HOW TO EARN POINTS Mail in a new referral card for any potential new member. Your lodge will receive 2 points if they become a member with a life or annuity product. less. A 15-minute walk around the neighborhood each morning coupled with a 15minute walk after dinner can help adults dramatically improve their overall health. Eat more greens. Eating more greens is another healthy habit that doesn’t require a major overhaul of an individual’s lifestyle. The U.S. Department of Agriculture notes that dark green leafy vegetables, such as spinach, are rich in vitamins A,C, E, and K. The Mayo Clinic notes that vitamin E alone can help people maintain their vision and promote a healthy reproductive system while also improving the health of the blood, brain and skin. The USDA also notes that green vegetables contain very little carbohydrates, sodium and cholesterol. Adults won’t have to reinvent the dietary wheel to incorporate more greens into their diets, and the results of doing so can have a significant, positive effect on their overall health. The right habits can help people live healthier lives, and such habits need not require any major life changes. (MS) —SPJST—

Lodge 92, Fort Worth Ladies Circle reports on January meeting The Ladies Circle of Lodge 92, Fort Worth met Tuesday, January 11, 2022, with 22 members present. We missed a lot of our friends who chose to stay home due to the rise in Covid cases. Those present wore masks, spread out when they were seated, and had a great time. Instead of the usual hugs being given, there were elbow bumps witnessed. Janet Basham read a few inspirational readings including “The Things That Matter Most to Me.” She also had several funny stories to share. Since it is a new year, new treasurer Claire Rooney was put to work collecting dues from everyone. It was reported that Robyn Brownlee was in the hospital with Covid. She is going to move to rehab shortly. We wish her a speedy recovery. Bobby Shropshire also has Covid but is convalescing at home with a mild case.

The 2022 SPJST Lodge 117, Robstown officers are, second from left to right, Treasurer Kathryn Marek, Secretary Dianne Raska, Vice President Frank Sijansky, and President Frances McDonald. The officers were installed by District Seven Director Regina House, pictured far left.

Ideas for future months were discussed. It was decided that in February, we will crown a Valentine Queen and designate a couple of ladies for her court. We are encouraged to wear red or pink. We will wear green for St. Patrick’s Day in March (might be a little Mardi Gras in the mix also). In April, we will have our annual Easter egg hunt. In July, we’ll have a picnic theme. More ideas will develop over the year, but this was a good start. Jon Durham, Lodge 92 Building Manager, announced the activities and dances coming up in January and February. On February 13, there will be a polka dance. He asked if the Ladies Circle would be interested in hosting a cake walk at this dance, and we voted to do

so. Birthdays for January are Bessie Ellsworth on the 5th, Carol Gilbert on the 7th, Darlene Tompkins on the 21st, Starlene Clawson on the 27th, Kali Martinez on the 29th, Lynn Connelly on the 30th, and Kitty Rippin, who will be 98 years young on the 31st. Several door prizes were given away including pecan pies, popcorn tins, an SPJST rain gauge filled with “rain” bingo coins, a bag filled with kitchen towels and several other goodies, and a Christmas cake. All the ladies present also received their own pecan can pie as a gift from Sandi Celusniak who stumbled on a bargain she couldn’t resist and thought of the friends she was going to see the next day.

The meeting was followed by a wonderful meal including roasted chicken, homemade dressing, ham, and meatballs furnished by this month’s hostesses – Betty Krenek, Lynn Cummings, Sharon Connelly, and Lola Taylor. The dishes the rest of the members brought were great, too. We only had one dessert, but after the holidays, we can skip a little dessert. Bingo followed with only 11 ladies playing, but we had a great time even though the pots were small. We hope to see more ladies feeling safe to come to the meeting next month. We missed those who were not there. (Sorry no photos this month, our photographer was not present.) Respectfully submitted, Cathy Simmank, President —SPJST—

More Fun Ways to Get 30 Minutes of Physical Activity When was the last time you moved out of your comfort zone to get active? When you were a kid, you moved your body while playing; you didn’t think about exercising. Swinging from the monkey bars, running around the park

and playing soccer with friends were par for the course of an active childhood. If as an adult the thought of breaking a sweat breaks your spirit, it might be time to think about fun ways you can get active, just like you’re a kid again. It’s recommended that adults do 150 to 300 minutes of moderate intensity physical activity a week. Starting with just 30 minutes a day will put you right in the middle of that range. But no one wants to spend half an hour a day slogging it out doing something they hate. You’ll get the most out of physical activities that you enjoy, and you’ll keep coming back for more.

Happy Birthday, Lodge 202, Jourdanton Members!

Here is a list of activities that will get your heart pumping and add a bit of fun into your schedule at the same time. Ready, set, play! Shopping You might not think of it as a physical activity, but shopping can add a lot of steps to your day. Next time you need to buy a few things, take the long way between shops, maybe doing a little window shopping on the way. Bonus points if you park your car further away from the entrance or walk to and from the shops. t

t Slide/roll down a hill (and run back up) Got a spare cardboard box lying around the house? Find a hill and get sliding! As well as the adrenalin rush of whooshing down the hill, you’ll burn energy when you run back up to the top. If you’re not into embracing your kidat-heart and rolling down the hill yourself, pop your kids on a blanket, drag them down the hill, and run back up. They’ll have a ball and you’ll get your heart pumping!

Boxercise Got some pent-up energy to release? Boxercise is a great cardio workout inspired by the workouts of pro-boxers. Boxercise is a great way to get fit and strong and even let out your daily frustrations, without having to actually play the contact sport. t

From International Espionage . . . to the SPJST Supreme Lodge by Michael Morris, Lodge 47, Seaton Nick A. Morris was SPJST Vestnik Editor from 1962 to 1969 and Supreme Lodge President from 1969 to 1984. The following is a story about Nick regarding his work prior to SPJST and Nick A. Morris his involvement in a pilot’s daring escape from (then) communist Czechoslovakia, interwoven with the timeless and enduring message of American exceptionalism and freedom. Several times throughout my life, my father regaled me with a story about an almost unbelievable event that he was a key figure in that occurred in Europe during the early 1950s. I don’t recall ever pressing him for details, but I should have. The fragments of that story have forever stuck in my mind, and I have always wanted to know more about it. I was fascinated with thoughts about those who were involved, how

they planned it, what actually occurred, and where they are now. Occasionally, I would do internet searches about it and come up empty. But I’ve recently learned a great deal more about that event, and I’d like to share it with you. The story begins like this. In 1953, my father was staMiroslav Slovak tioned in Germany working as a civilian employee for the U.S. Government, when a handful of Czechs decided to defect from (then) communist Czechoslovakia by hijacking a commercial airliner that was scheduled to fly from Brno to Praha, the capitol city. The pilot, 23-year-old Miroslav Slovak, had been planning his defection for quite a while, along with another couple who were on the flight. During the flight, two other passengers learned of their plan,

and they, too, decided to defect. Miroslav and the other four passengers, worked collectively to subdue the co-pilot, keep other rebellious passengers out of the cockpit, and guide the plane at night . . . beneath radar detection . . . through the fog . . . and into communist-free Frankfurt, Germany. Enter my 33-year-old father. His training, language skills, and strategic location made him the perfect person to receive and meet with the five Czech defectors, get to know them, debrief them, and ultimately help pave the way for them to seek asylum in the United

that lead, I found out that in addition to being a published author, that he is also the executive director of the Hydroplane and Raceboat Museum in Kent, Washington. You see, after Miroslav Slovak became an American citizen, he quickly became an accomplished and celebrated commercial airline pilot, stunt pilot, and hydroplane pilot . . . the primary reasons Mr. Williams was tapped to write his book. Again, I dug a little deeper and found Outside his apartment, Nick A. Morris with dog Johnny

States. Exciting stuff, huh?! In 2021, my sister, Katherine, shared with me an excerpt from an article that she’d discovered online regarding a recently-written book about Miroslav Slovak which referenced the name - Nickey Morris as he was called back then - and his involvement in the event. When I saw that, I got really interested and decided to dig deeper! Online access to free content can be limited so I went about trying to find out more about the author of the book. I was certain that if anyone knew the full story about Miroslav Slovak’s daring escape to freedom and my father’s involvement in it, it was going to be the author David Williams, and I had to speak to him! Trying to find his current contact information proved much more difficult, and I hit nothing but dust for quite a while. After more research, I found an article about an interview that Mr. Williams gave about the book. By following

Monday, January 24, 2022 been a surprise if he had?! I think a little more backstory is in order at this point. During the times that my father spoke about this spicy tale, he would also occasionally mention that his involvement eventually led to him being a guest on a popular television show honoring Miroslav Slovak called This Is Your Life, hosted and produced by Ralph Edwards

the website for the museum, located their phone number, and decided to call. I was somewhat nervous as I didn’t actually know who I would reach and had not really planned what I was going to say. Somewhat to my dismay – and a bit of relief – no one answered. So, I followed the prompts to leave a voice message for Mr. Williams. I was confident that I had left enough “teasing” information to illicit a call back . . . and it did! When Mr. Williams called me back a short while later, I immediately realized that it was his voice I’d heard on the museum’s answering service just a short while ago. After exchanging introductions and explaining how our conversation came to be and so forth, Mr. Williams told me that while conducting research for his book that he tried to reach someone in our family to see what we knew about my father’s involvement in the events, but had no success. Wouldn’t that have

. . . some of you probably remember that show. Each episode of This Is Your Life was built around Mr. Edwards conducting a “surprise” interview of a famous or iconic person, along with a brief review of their life, their accomplishments, and key people from their past.

ceiving that package in the mail . . . watching the DVD and seeing my dad on TV . . . cracking open that book and reading his name . . . then sharing those treasures with my family! Suffice it to say that it was a dream come true getting to connect and communicate with the author of the book and the man who had come to know Miroslav Slovak so intimately. Mr. Williams’s ninth published book is entitled, A Race to Freedom . . . The Mira Slovak Story. It’s a fascinating and riveting tale of bravery, determination, hope, and inspiration that will keep you turning page after page! It is available for purchase from Amazon in three formats: hardback, digital (Kindle), and audiobook. —SPJST—

For me, the story that dad told me about always conjured up fantastic ideas of what that experience must have been like for him and those involved. During one of my subsequent conversations with Mr. Williams, he asked me if I’d ever seen that particular episode of This Is Your Life. I told him that I hadn’t, but sure would have loved to. He then revealed to me that during his research that he was able to obtain a copy of it. After further discussion about his work, his many interviews with Miroslav, and his book research in general, I asked him if I could purchase five copies of his book from him – one for me and my four siblings. Mr. Williams was gracious enough to send me five personally-signed copies of his book, along with five DVDs of the This Is Your Life episode featuring Miroslav Slovak. What an absolute thrill it was re-

SPJST Youth Section State Fraternal Director shares February updates Hopefully, everyone had a great time bringing in 2022! There were many SPJST lodges hosting New Year’s Eve dances and celebrations. It was low key at our house this year. I received my C o v i d booster shot and f e l t crummy so I decided to turn on the television to watch the ball drop in Times Square while in the comforts of home! Did anyone see the full moon on Monday, January 17? The Farmer’s Almanac calls it the full Wolf Moon. It caught my eye looking into my rearview mirror coming home Monday evening after work. I only wished I had pulled over to take a photo of it. I did find a great photo online taken Monday night from Yahoo. I wanted to share with you. Let’s Get Together! In the coming weeks, I will be heading to each district to visit with our youth leaders and DYCs. The goal: to listen to your thoughts about our youth program and to hear your ideas about revitalizing it. You will receive thought questions prior to the visit that will be designed to encourage meaningful discussion. Your own questions will also be encouraged. This informal gathering will last no more than a couple of hours and be held at your lodge or a quiet restaurant. 2022 SPJST Lodge Membership Drive: Up, Up and Away! Introducing the 2022 Membership Drive and Contest for all lodges. Here’s your chance to help grow your lodge and raise a little funds for the lodge, too. David Motley was born July 20, 1968, in the dust bowl and the rattlesnake capitol of Texas called Sweetwater. He was the middle child and only son of Reese and Peggy Motley. In Memory of Cheryl House Lodge 202, Jourdanton officers and members express their heartfelt sympathy to the relatives and friends of CHERYL LYNN HOUSE. On December 28, 2021, Cheryl Lynn House, age 63, of Jourdanton, Texas, ended her long battle with cancer and passed peacefully from this earth. Viewing, rosary, and service were held at Hurley Funeral Home Chapel in Pleasanton on Wednesday, JanuCheryl House ary 5 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. Cheryl was born November 12, 1958, to Jimmy R. and Dorothy (Valchar) House in Killeen, Texas, while Jimmy was stationed in the Army. She often referred to herself as an Army Brat, especially when her inquisitive and mischievous nature got her in trouble. At an early age she loved to explore her surroundings, like when she was two years old and crawled over the chain link fence before her dad could even finish installing it in their backyard in Charlotte, or when she pushed her highchair up to the window and climbed out to play or visit the neighbors. Being told “no,” was not acceptable to her. Cheryl’s inquisitiveness and takecharge attitude led her to explore many interests, like piano lessons with Mrs. Ormand, 4-H cooking and sewing projects, playing clarinet in the band, OEA competitions, dancing, art, and poetry. Her English teacher, Mrs. Edgar Williams, taught her to love reading and writing which influenced her to later become an English teacher.

After graduating from Texas A&I University in Kingsville, Cheryl taught eighth grade English for 27 years in Pearsall. She especially enjoyed teaching her creative Gifted and Talented students. When she retired from teaching in 2014, she took charge of helping her parents, who both had health problems. Being the oldest of three children, her take-charge attitude helped her to focus on what she felt was important - her family. Researching family history, staying in touch with relatives, collecting photographs and recipes of family members, and recording memories became important. Cheryl also loved to play bingo, cards, dominos, the lottery, and slot machines. She didn’t win all the time, but she seemed to be pretty lucky at these games of chance. Cheryl also had a down-to-earth side that she expressed through planting and growing vegetables. She made some of the best tasting salsa from the produce of her gardens. She was preceded in death by both her parents, Jimmy R. and Dorothy (Valchar) House; grandparents Jim and Stella (Childress) House, and Leopold and Helen (Stavinoha) Valchar; aunts and uncles Billy and Maggie House, Pete and Virginia Pawelek, Arline Fischer, Eugene Valchar, Leo (Sonny) Valchar, and Helen (Valchar) Blume. She is survived by sister Vivian (House) Howe; brother and sister-in-law James and Regina (Marek) House; and nieces Heather (Howe) Dunn and husband Vinnie, Michelle House, and Kelly House. Serving as honorary pallbearers were Shane Blume, Scott Valchar, Eric House, Jake Pawelek, and Zack Pawelek. Donations can be made to the Epilepsy Foundation or the American Cancer Society. Cheryl attended SPJST Lodge 202, Jourdanton meetings and supported the different lodge projects. She will be missed. Fraternally, Bettie House, Secretary —SPJST—

TCGS postpones January 29 event; reschedules for April Numerous times over the past several months, you have seen the publicity for the Texas Czech Genealogical Society (TCGS) January event, “Launching to New Horizons in 2022 and Beyond.” While we are proud and anxious to present this entire program to you, the TCGS officers and board members, as the rest of the world, have become very concerned about the virus surge that is sweeping our state in every direction. While the omicron strain does not seem to be as serious as others, it is showing to be more contagious, even to those who have received the vaccines. Even with as many safety precautions as possible being in place at the event, safety of attendees remains our main concern. For this reason, the decision to abort the event on January 29, 2022, has been made. Please accept our apologies, and any registration fee(s) which may have been made will be refunded to you either through your credit card or by the return of your check. The decision to abort the January date has been made; but we will “Launch to New Horizons in 2022 and Beyond” on Saturday, April 2 at Caldwell Civic Center. Just as NASA, after

Bishop to designate Dubina an official pilgrimage site for Czech Catholics On Monday, February 14, 2022, Bishop Brendan Cahill of the Diocese of Victoria will celebrate Mass starting at 10:30 a.m. in Dubina, Texas. On this occasion, he will designate Saints Cyril and Methodius Catholic Church as a diocesan place of pilgrimage to give glory to God, to honor the Apostles to the Slavs and the Czech immigrants who brought the Faith to Texas given to them by the two brother saints. (These saints created an alphabet that gave literary [written] birth to the Slavic language used in their mission to the Moravians in 863 A.D. to evangelize and convert the pagans to our Faith.) The designation by the Bishop will include attendant indulgences allowed by Canon Law for pilgrims visiting the church and offering prayers of worship, thanksgiving, reparation, or petition. The church in Dubina was selected since it was the first parish founded in Texas under the patronage of Saints Cyril and Methodius. The saints feast day is celebrated in the United States on February 14. The celebration will continue with lunch after Mass in the church hall. The Czech Catholic Foundation of Texas and the parishioners extend an invitation to all interested Catholics and non-Catholics to attend both the Mass and luncheon. Breakfast in the Czech Republic Breakfast has often been called the most important meal of the day and, according to novinky.cz, Czech people certainly agree with this statement. Breakfast - Snídaně - is enjoyed by the majority of the Czech people. Only about 14 percent of Czech people skip breakfast regularly. The rest of the population start their day with a delicious breakfast every morning. But what does a typical Czech breakfast look like? The Czech Republic is home to millions of people and, while their tastes obviously vary, there are a few favorite meals which have become staples at the Czech breakfast table. We begin with beverages. Tea and Coffee Coffee and tea are among the most popular choices when it comes to breakfast drinks in the Czech Republic. Studies have found that most Czechs like to begin their day with a cup of hot tea (usually flavored with either sugar or honey and possibly lemon) or a cup of coffee. Coffee is only slightly less popular than tea, with the most popular variety being the Czech specialty known as turecká káva - Turkish coffee. Turecká káva is a Czech version of coffee, which is prepared by pouring boiling

VĚSTNÍK water over finely ground coffee beans. Within the Czech Republic, about 80 percent of the coffee is prepared this way in about 90 percent of the homes, making it the most popular choice. Now, let’s look at a few of the typical meals you will encounter on a Czech table in the morning. Let’s begin with the most popular choices: Bread or Rolls with Spreads, Cheeses, or Meats A typical Czech breakfast consists of a slice of rye bread or a roll - rohlík with a spread such as butter, jelly, or honey, or perhaps a slice of cheese or meat such as salami or ham. This versatile meal is an incredibly popular way to begin the day. Homemade garlic or egg salad spreads are also a popular topping to flavor your bread or roll. Baked pastries and buns Baked pastries and buns are another popular choice especially on weekends or special occasions. Popular choices include kolache, buchty, bublanina, and babovka. A smaller percent of the population has eggs, yoghurt, palacinky, or some sort of kasé - cream of wheat and oatmeal at the most popular choices. https://www.tresbohemes.com/2018/09/breakfast-in-theczech-republic/
