Lodge 54, West endows scholarship; to honor Rudy and Maxine Sefcik SPJST announces the creation of a newly endowed scholarship that honors the life and legacy of longtime fraternalists Rudy and Maxine Sefcik. An initial donation of $20,000 from members of Lodge 54, West established the Rudy and Maxine Sefcik Benevolent Scholarship which will be awarded annually beginning in Spring 2022. “We had been kicking this idea about for the last year or two,” says Lodge 54, West President Freddie Kaluza. “Many memories come back to me about Rudy and Maxine. I remember back in 1986 when I was mowing a yard, and Rudy
stopped by to visit and asked me if I would be interested in serving as treasurer of Lodge 54. Reluctantly, I accepted, but it was a decision that I do not regret.” At the time, Rudy and Maxine were managing Lone Star Hall and from that point forward, Brother Freddie and his wife, Janice, devoted many weekends working alongside Brother Rudy and Sister Maxine hosting weddings, anniversaries, birthday parties, and other functions. Keep in mind, this was in addition to Brother
Rudy carrying out the duties of Vestnik Editor and Sister Maxine serving as the Office Assistant.” “Rudy could always make me laugh,” says Brother Freddie. “He was also instrumental in encouraging me to become a sales agent for Lodge 54. Janice, who is also an agent, and I are so proud that our lodge was able to fund this endowed SPJST scholarship as a tribute to Rudy and Maxine.” In addition to serving as president of Lodge 54, West, Brother Rudy also served as president of Lodge 88, Hous-
Honorary Battlefield Cross
ton. As a member of Lodge 88, Houston, the Sefciks served as delegates to SPJST conventions from 1948 to 1960. Brother Rudy was first elected editor in 1968 and was reelected five times. Because the paper was published by Čechoslovak Publishing Company in West, a move to this Central Texas town was necessary. He retired after completing his sixth term in 1992 when current SPJST President/CEO Brian Vanicek was elected editor. “I remember summer days growing up on the farm, riding my bicycle to pick up the mail, and – every Wednesday – looking at the Vestnik,” says Brother Brian. “As I got older and moved to Austin, and then to Colorado, I continued to receive the newspaper. And through it all, something that always impressed me was that the editor stayed the same. Many of Continued on Page 8.

Lodge 29, Taylor member John Stasny and Dotty Davis contributed a Battlefield Cross to the Texas Czech Genealogical Society’s Czech Veterans Military Display located in the downstairs gallery at the SPJST Home Office in Temple. The Battlefield Cross, which is an iconic symbol of sacrifice, honor, and respect for those who have given all, is presented on a granite stone that reads, “Given in Loving Memory of Bennie Stasny and Everett Davis by John Stasny and Dotty Davis.” The granite was designed and created by Craig Zimmerhanzel of Lodge 18, Elgin. Craig is the owner of San Gabriel Monuments in Taylor. he Cars & Guitars event which was originally scheduled to be held in April at Camp Kubena has been moved to Saturday, October 29. Save the date, add it to your calendar, and make plans to be at Camp Kubena on October 29! We will share more news over the next months in the Vestnik or visit campkubena.com or spjst.org for all the details. Missing Our Vestnik Poet The Vestnik staff has thoroughly enjoyed sharing poems from poet David Knape (or d.knape) in the Vestnik over the years. We are very sad to announce that Mr. Knape, who was a member of Lodge 187, Round Rock, passed away on March 14. He will be greatly missed. He was a very humble gentleman and always gracious when his poems were published. He declined an interview back in 2018. He said, “Why on earth would you do that and ruin your great publication’s reputation? Just tell them I am the Poet Laureate of Ammannsville, Texas. If they don’t know where that is, it is in Fayette County, home to some of the earliest Czech settlers in Texas.” He was quite entertaining, too. I pleaded with him for the interview, but he replied, “I try to protect my privacy, due to the fact I am on the run from the law! I really do not like to do personal interviews. I prefer to let the reader use their imagination and get their insight through my poems. But thanks for the offer.”
We extend our condolences to his wife Paula; his children Karin, Kimberly, and Karl; and their family. Mr. Knape’s obituary appears on page 17. Spring Storms Tornadoes swept through Central Texas on Monday, March 21, touching down in Round Rock, Elgin, Taylor, Granger, Buckholts, and other towns and communities. Our thoughts and prayers are with those who are affected by these storms. As this week’s Vestnik was heading to the printer, Lodge 18, Elgin Trustee F.L. Meyer announced that Lodge 18 will be the site for a community fundraiser for tornado victims on Saturday, April 9. Thanks to Lodge 18 for stepping up and lending a helping hand to the community. We will have more information about the fundraiser as it becomes available on our SPJST Facebook page. Put Health and Wellness on Your 2022 Calendar
by Brian Vanicek SPJST President/ Chief Executive Officer
(Editor’s Note: A 30-year study conducted by Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health found that the participants following five simple healthy lifestyles were 82 percent less likely to die from cardiovascular disease and 65 percent less likely to die from cancer. Good health is a result of consistent healthy habits. Building healthy eating and physical activity habits into your regular routine can help to keep you healthy and prevent chronic conditions. This week’s Fraternal Focus looks to the American Heart Association for advice.) A healthy diet and active lifestyle are the keys to preventing and managing cardiovascular disease. It’s not as hard as you may think! It’s the overall pattern of your choices that counts. Make the simple steps below part of your life for longterm benefits to your health and your heart. One of the first things to work on is using up as many calories as you take in. A good place to start is knowing how many calories you should be eating and drinking to maintain your weight. Nutrition and calorie information on food labels is typically based on a 2,000 calorie per day diet. You may need fewer or more calories depending on several factors including age, gender, and level of physical activity. The American Heart Association recommends that you get at least 150 minutes per week of moderate-intensity aerobic activity or 75 minutes per week
of vigorous aerobic activity, or a combination of both, preferably spread throughout the week. Even light-intensity activity can offset some of the risks of being sedentary. Regular physical activity can help you maintain your weight, keep off weight that you lose, and reach physical and cardiovascular fitness. If it’s hard to schedule regular exercise, look for ways to build short bursts of activity into your daily routine such as parking farther away and taking the stairs instead of the elevator. Ideally, your activity should be spread throughout the week. When it comes to diet, work to achieve a dietary pattern that emphasizes a wide variety of fruits and vegetables. The good news is that all produce counts. Fresh, canned, and frozen varieties can help you reach your goal. Watch out though, for sodium. Sodium is usually added to canned foods to preserve them. Consider seeking out lowsodium, reduced-sodium, or no-salt-added labeled foods. Draining and rinsing canned veggies reduces the sodium content even more. Eat whole grains and products made up mostly of whole grains. Many whole grains are good sources of dietary fiber, which we all need. Most refined grains contain little or no fiber. Dietary fiber can help improve blood cholesterol levels and lower your risk of heart disease, stroke, obesity, and even Type 2 Diabetes. And here’s a bonus for you if you’re trying to lose weight: Fiber can help you feel full, so you’ll be satisfied with fewer calories.
The American Heart Association recommends choosing healthy sources of proteins, mostly from plant sources; regularly eating fish and seafood; substituting nonfat and low-fat dairy products in place of full-fat versions; and for people who eat meat or poultry, choosing those that are lean and unprocessed. Fat gets a bad rap even though it is a nutrient we need in our diets. Eating foods with fat is definitely part of a
healthy diet. The thing is you don’t have too much fat in your diet. To choose healthier fats, use liquid non-tropical plant oils; low-fat or nonfat instead of full-fat dairy; and, if you eat meat, lean meat or poultry. And remember to balance the amount of calories you eat from all foods with the amount of calories you use through physical activity. Focus on minimally processed food. Most foods are processed, meaning that they have been changed, prepared, or packaged in some way before we eat them. They fall somewhere on a spectrum from minimally processed — like salad mix, bagged dry beans, roasted unsalted nuts, or frozen fruits or vegetables — to what some nutrition experts refer to as highly or ultra-processed — like sugary beverages, chips, or smoked sausage. Watch out for added sugar. The major sources of added sugars are sugary beverages like regular soft drinks, sweetened tea and coffee, energy drinks and fruit drinks, candy, desserts, and sweet snacks like cakes, cookies, and pies. Smaller amounts come from dairy desserts and milk products like ice cream, sweetened yogurt, and sweetened milk, breakfast cereals and bars, and other items. Many people consume more sugar than they realize. It’s important to be aware of how much sugar you consume because our bodies don’t need sugar to function properly. Added sugars contribute zero nutrients but many added calories that can lead to extra pounds or even obesity. That can reduce heart health. Consider foods prepared with little or no salt. The American Heart Association recommends no more than 2,300 milligrams (mg) a day and moving toward an ideal limit of no more than 1,500 mg per day for most adults. Because the average American eats so much excess sodium, even cutting back by 1,000 milligrams a day can significantly improve blood pressure and heart health. And remember, more than 70 percent of the sodium Americans eat comes from packaged, prepared, and restaurant foods — not the salt shaker. If you enjoy sipping a glass of wine, a beer, or a cocktail now and then, the American Heart Association advises that you keep moderation in mind to protect your health. Moderate alcohol consumption means an average of one to two
drinks per day for men and one drink per day for women. Different types of beer, wine, and liquor have different amounts of alcohol. But in general, a drink is one 12-ounce regular beer, 5 ounces of wine, or 1.5 ounces of 80proof spirits, such as bourbon, vodka, or gin. Drinking too much alcohol increases your risk for many health problems, including high blood pressure, obesity, stroke, breast cancer, liver disease, depression, suicide, accidents, alcohol abuse, and alcoholism. It is possible to follow a hearthealthy dietary pattern regardless of whether food is prepared at home, ordered in a restaurant or online, or purchased as a prepared meal. Read the Nutrition Faces and ingredient list on packaged food labels to choose those with less sodium, added sugars, and saturated fat. Look for the Heart-Check mark to find foods that have been certified by the American Heart Association as heart-healthy.
The topic of our first SPJST Fraternal Focus webcast on January 24 was all about putting health and wellness on your 2022 calendar. We build on that theme with the Tuesday, March 29 Fraternal Focus online program with the emphasis on healthy eating and what we can all do in order to sustain healthy eating habits. Be sure to join online for the presentation! Based on your positive feedback, once again our guest presenter will be Joan Vanicek, who is the Health Promotion and Disease Prevention Program Manager at Central Texas Veterans Health Care System in Temple. The online programs are approximately an hour in length and include a wealth of information relating to SPJST activities as well as our regular focus topic. To participate in the Tuesday, March 29 Fraternal Focus online webcast, visit spjst.org to register. The webcast begins at 7 p.m. —SPJST—

It’s Your Life
Who Do You Know, Like, and Trust When I had remodeling done in my house, it could have been a job filled with anxiety. Who do I get the job done from? Can I trust them? Are they insured? I’m not going to be in front of them 24 hours a day. What are they going to do when I’m not there? Are they going to eat my food, go through my drawers looking for valuables, or break my piggy bank? Fortunately for me, I knew someone in the repair business so I asked him for a referral of someone he trusts. This immediately calmed my fears. When you need help with taxes, if you have a friend who does taxes, you go to them first. If you know someone who does hair, when you need a haircut, you would think of them first. It is always easier to go with someone you know, like, and trust. If I need a job done or am looking for a special item and I am not sure where to go, I usually ask a friend before I go to Google. If they know someone whom they trust, then I will be more comfortable, also. If you are reading this article, it means you are a member of SPJST. We are celebrating our 125th anniversary this year. With Covid still lingering and the economy in flux, more people are reviewing their life insurance to make sure they have enough. They are also wondering if they can find a safer place to tuck away some of that retirement money as they watch it dwindle away. This is a good time to refer SPJST to a friend to help give them direction. We have products that can fill the gap or help with college or retirement. Our annuities are guaranteed to have more money tomorrow than it has today regardless of what the economy does. When you start using it for re-
tirement, it is also guaranteed to give you an income until the day you die. You will never outlive your money with our annuities. If you have a friend who is worried about losing their money or have money laying in their estate waiting to pass to their children, let them know about us. Our annuities are protected from estate taxes and probate. They grow tax-free and are not taxed until you use the money. They are only taxed on the money you use. If you would like to know more, contact your Regional General Agent (RGA) or call me directly at 832-232-2049 and I will be more than glad to guide you on both life insurance and annuities. We do free reviews so ask us to look at all your policies and make sure you have the right protection for your current needs. Our current annuity rates are: 1 year - 1.25% 2 years - 1.75% 5 year guarantee - 3.25% locks it in for 5 years Flexible Premium deferred annuities (Roth and Trad. IRA and nonIRA annuity) - 3.25% * These rates are good until the end of April.
State Fraternal Director shares April updates “The beautiful spring came, and when nature resumes her loveliness, the human soul is apt to revive also.” — Harriet Ann Jacobs This quote is a comparison of our lives as we know it today — not just the changing of the seasons. We are leaving behind the cold winter (COVID) and revitalizing a new life full of hopes and dreams. It’s like a new lease on life! SPJST members, there is one way we can resume the human soul and that is by volunteering in our communities. With busy lives, it can be hard to find time to volunteer. However, the benefits of volunteering can be enormous. Volunteering offers vital help to people in need, worthwhile causes, and the community, but the benefits can be even greater for you—the volunteer. The right match can help you to find friends, connect with the community, learn new skills, and even advance your career. I challenge you . . . please go out and volunteer today! National Volunteer Appreciation Week is April 17 to 23, 2022. The Communications and Fraternal Department is very appreciative of the time our district officers, lodge officers, committees, and members give to SPJST. We sincerely thank you for your service. 2022 Lodge Membership Drive: Up, Up and Away! The 2022 membership drive and contest for all lodges is underway. This
is your chance to help grow your lodge and raise some funds for your lodge, too. Now is the time to focus on bringing in new members to your lodge. We introduced a new referral program last year. Now, your lodge can earn funds for those referrals. See the flyer on page 6 for more details. 2022 SPJST Lodge Enhanced Premium Refund Guidelines One of the most important financial benefits that the SPJST Executive Committee has extended to local lodges is the annual Premium Refund Program. The purpose of this program has been to help SPJST lodges keep their operations on a sound financial basis. The formula for calculating the refund is: 1. $1.00 for each paid-up certificate in the lodge; and 2. 1.25% of the lodge’s annual earned premium. To receive the refund in early 2023, lodges must meet the following four-point criteria:
r 1.
Hold Regular Lodge Meetings in Accordance with Section 74 of the SPJST By-Laws and Offer a Well-Rounded Fraternal Program.
Every lodge is required to hold regular meetings to discuss lodge business with its members. Service to each other — as fellow SPJST members — and service to the community is an important part of SPJST’s mission. Rather than mandating a specific number of fraternal activities that your lodge must accomplish in a given year in order to remain in good standing and qualify for incentives, the greater focus is on lodges working to host a healthy mix of “quality” events that bring value to SPJST’s community presence.
r 2.
Return All Requested Paperwork by January 15, 2023. • Form 990 or Form 990-T • Fraternal Activity Summaries • Updated Lodge Officer Listing
Each person who sends in a referral and the referral becomes a new member — or a current member who purchases an additional certificate — will receive a $25 thank you gift card.
HOW TO EARN POINTS
2022 Lodge Enhanced Premium Refund Guidelines Please see the important guidelines below that were approved in the January Executive Committee Meeting by the Board of Directors. Let me know if you have any questions or need any assistance. We are here to help you attain your lodge’s goals this year!
r 3.
Submit Routine News/Photos to the Vestnik.
Every lodge is required to submit news of upcoming events, lodge meetings, and/or meeting/event summaries and/or photographs to the Vestnik as well as to their local media. Youth submissions, member features, and obituaries can also be submitted to the Vestnik. Every lodge is required to have a submission in at least 4 of the 24 published Vestniks in 2022. Of course, the lodge may contribute to the Vestnik more frequently. Local news media features can also satisfy these requirements when the features are shared with the Vestnik (see contact details below). Vestniks are published on the second and fourth Mondays of each month. Unless otherwise noted in the Vestnik, the deadline for submitting items for publication are the first and third Mondays of each month at 5 p.m. Articles and photos may be submitted in several ways:
Submit referrals online at spjst.org/referral
• Online at www.spjst.org under the “News” tab • Email to vestnik@spjst.org • Fax to 254-773-8087 (articles only; photos not accepted through fax) • Mail to SPJST Vestnik • PO Box 100 • Temple, TX 76503-0100 • Text to 254-534-0807
The referrals submitted will be assigned to one of your lodge agents or the best qualified agent to help your lodge. If the agent closes the deal, your lodge will receive the new member or certificate credit (if it is an existing member). This is a great opportunity to get your lodge’s youth involved by, inviting friends to become members. It’s also a great opportunity to get neighbors, friends, and family involved, too! Monthly winners will be posted in the Vestnik.
r 4.
Share Lodge/Member Activities and Stories on Social Media.
Lodges are encouraged to share lodge/member activities and stories on Facebook and/or Instagram. Some examples include lodge members serving a meal at a soup kitchen; members cleaning a cemetery; food drive for local pantry; hosting a heritage or cultural event; and contribution to non-profit organization. The Communication Department is available to assist with fulfilling the lodge’s social media requirement.

the Supreme Lodge officers would change but there was real consistency in the editor’s seat. “Those of us who knew Brother Sefcik know that he didn’t mince words. He believed in the freedom of the press, the spirit of fraternalism, and the importance of the membership to be thoroughly informed on all matters of the Society. “‘I was brought up to say what I thought,’ Brother Rudy once said to me. Upon coming aboard as the new editor, I asked Brother Rudy if he had any regrets regarding his tenure as editor. He said to me, ‘Well if I wanted to be a good boy about it, I could say that I wish that I had been easier on the fellows in the Home Office. But, if you want the truth, I don’t have any regrets. If I had to do it over again, I would do it all the same,’ he said, and then he smiled.” Throughout his tenure as Vestnik Editor, Rudy’s wife Maxine remained his faithful assistant, providing backup support in the newspaper’s composition and the moral support necessary to keep the Sefcik household – including sons Edwin J. (Bubba) and Terry – running smoothly. In addition to their longtime support of SPJST, Brother Rudy and Sister Maxine were also members of Texas Czech Heritage Society, Sokol West Gymnastic Association, Sons of Hermann Magnolia Lodge in Houston, Czechoslovak Society of America, and

Western Fraternal Life Association (now known as BetterLife). Brother Sefcik was also a co-founder and lifetime member of Czech Educational Foundation of Texas as well as a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion. KHBR Radio in Hillsboro celebrated the 50th anniversary of its “American Czech Hour” in 2020, broadcasting polkas and waltzes every Sunday afternoon for an hour-and-a-half. The first host of the program was Brother Rudy. Sister Maxine was there, too, behind the scenes lining up the records. She went on to serve as the show’s co-producer alongside David Kolar for many years thereafter. Perpetual community boosters, Brother Rudy and Sister Maxine also served as masters of ceremonies for the Westfest Cultural Entertainment program from its inception. After Brother Rudy’s passing in 1993, Sister Maxine continued to serve as event co-emcee until health reasons prompted her to step down in 2007. She was also an associate director of Westfest. As a lasting testament to Brother Rudy and Sister Maxine’s commitment to all things Czech, the Sefcik Amphitheatre on the Westfest fairgrounds is named in their honor. Sister Maxine continues to reside in West. State Fraternal Director shares April youth news Hello, SPJST Youth Leaders, Parents, and Youth. I have traveled around the state a number of times in the month of March. For some reason, I always end up at Buc-ee’s or Slovacek’s — let me tell you the number of people that are inside is unbelievable! Wall to wall people and no masks. I’m keeping my fingers crossed that the pandemic is over. I really love spending my free time with my wife, Connie, in our backyard. A couple of weeks ago, I worked on honey-do list projects for her. She loves growing fruit and vegetables, and we made another raised garden bed. This gives her more space to grow other vegetables. Last year, Connie planted three strawberry plants in one of the raised beds, and the three plants multiplied to 20 plants. She purchased a stackable planter for the strawberries so hopefully soon, we will have an abundant crop.

“I look up and all I hear is a symphony of small wooden mallets pounding pieces of leather on the work tables.” Boom, boom, boom, boom! fills the Activity Barn at Camp Kubena while a group of campers practice their leather working skills. The campers place their wooden mallets back on the tables to sift through design stamps within their table’s tool kit. Which designs will they choose to decorate their piece of leather? Will it be letters to spell out their names, or maybe they will choose the Camp Kubena mascot: a lion, to add to their leather wristband. Whatever they choose, they will leave with a uniquely crafted piece of leather that reminds them of their time at Camp Kubena’s Leather Working Program. While the Leather Working Program is relatively new and updated at Camp Kubena, the history of working with leather can be traced back hundreds of thousands of years ago. According to Liberty Leather Goods (2021), the documentation of working with leather goods started around 400,000 years ago in England! Before that, stone tools were used for cutting and scraping animal hides to start the “tanning” process of preserving and aging leather for future use. The combination of stone tools and leather hides provided clothing products and many other items for survival in ancient times. Crafting with leather has taken place throughout the ages, ranging from the Stone Age to the Renaissance, the Industrial Revolution, and even into our current times (LLG, 2021). First and foremost, leather was used as a protective material for men and women to stay warm in the winter and to stay cool in the summer. The

in group populations. This increase led to the production of leather goods being used as armor for soldiers and even horses in ancient times. As leather evolved throughout time, it became a very common item in people’s lives. Items that we see now such as leather coats, gloves, shoes, and even accessories are mass produced and can be shipped anywhere. To bridge the gap between the past and current methods of leather craftsmanship, we have updated our Leather Working Program at Camp Kubena in a big way. Campers now learn about how force, energy, and motion are all crucial elements to crafting a leather product. They also learn how to properly prepare their piece of leather by dunking it into a water bucket to make it more malleable when the stamps are then used. Through our Leather Working Program, participants learn how to create a design, use tools like punches, design stamps, and mallets, and use their energy to create an original design that they can take home with them to remember their time at Camp Kubena!
hides of animals were used as this protective clothing and even as tools, armor, bags, footwear, and jewelry. As time moved forward, more tools developed to piece or “sew” leather items together to make various goods, products, and even shelters (LLG, 2021). The production of tools and goods led to the emergence of trading where groups of people could trade leather goods for knowledge and other resources. With trading, came the idea of community and a major increase

TCGS sets April 2 “Relaunching to New Horizons” event Each year in January, Texas Czech Genealogical Society (TCGS) begins the new year by hosting its annual membership meeting. This year, because of Covid, the event was moved to Saturday, April 2, 2022. It will be held at Caldwell Civic Center, 103 Presidential Corridor (Highway 21) in Caldwell, Texas. You are invited to join us for an exciting day of learning a number of ways Czechs journeyed, beginning in the 1800s, from our Fatherland to Texas. Presentations by Leo Baca (Saved by An Angel), Richard Lesikar (By Land by Sea - Texas the Czech Dream), Patrick Janis (From Moravia to the Moon, by Way of Texas), and Luba Ruzicka (From Socialism to American Freedom) will bring a clear picture of strength, faith, dreams, and determination which will clearly give you extra pride in your Czech heritage. The warm smile of the current Miss Czech-Slovak US Queen 2021-2022 will greet you and bring a brief presentation as well. Our silent auction table is always an area of interest. At this event, additional homemade baked goodies will also be available. Monies raised from the silent auction table will benefit our building fund. The event begins at 9 a.m. (doors open at 8 a.m.) with morning refreshments of kolaches, coffee, and juice. Lunch will include roast beef with gravy, smashed potatoes, buttered corn, green beans, rolls, tea, and cake for des-
sert. As the day’s program draws to a close, each attendee will have received the enjoyment of Czech fellowship, as well as learning about valuable Czech strength as dreams became reality. With the coronavirus still impacting our lives, as many safety precautions as possible will be in place. We encourage those attending to have been fully vaccinated with facial masks, optional, but encouraged. Registration for the entire day is currently being accepted. Registration at the door is $60 for all members and non-members. You can also register and pay by credit card by going to: https://txczgs.square.site/ We invite you to join us as we greet you with a Czech welcome at the door of the Caldwell Civic Center on April 2! CEFT members get onboard for Deanville by Diane Sulak Wilson At its January 22, 2022, general membership meeting held at the SPJST Home Office in Temple, Texas, members of the Czech Educational Foundation of Texas (CEFT) heard from members of the Deanville Heritage Foundation about the upcoming April 30, 2022, dedication of the newly restored train depot which will serve as a museum to honor the several orphan train children who arrived there in the early 1900s. Linda Fulmer of East Texas, whose grandfather was a passenger on one of the several orphan trains, brought together Deanville representatives Tommy Ryan, Beverly Blinka, and Patsy Simek and made it possible for them to address CEFT members virtually and in person. Over the years, Linda has amassed a wealth of information about this important time in history which she shares in regular addresses to community and genealogy groups. Linda introduced Tommy Ryan, president of the Deanville Heritage Foundation, who attended in person. He gave

a brief accounting of how the Deanville Depot came to be restored. He referred to an interview with BCC Magazine (2021/22) in which he gave a detailed account about acquiring the land, moving the decaying old depot, and finding the right people to restore it. He reported that the building was built in 1913 and was “the last remaining of 10 such de-

pots in Burleson County.” In my personal December 2021, visit to the town of Deanville, I was told by Mr. Ryan that the land was donated by Bennie and Tammie Jones. He said how interesting it was to work with Texas A&M students in the seven-year-long restoration project. And he also told of plans to have a bronze status for each child for which much financial aid will be needed. In a virtual appearance, Beverly Blinka of Deanville told CEFT members that her mother, Mary Elizabeth Maresh, arrived in Deanville as an infant. She was born in New York on April 28, 1909, and was the daughter of Mary Delaney and Charles Doyle. Ac-
Monday, March 28, 2022 cording to Beverly, her mother’s obituary stated that Mary Maresh was indentured to Bohumil and Mary Charanza Prazak of Frenstat, Texas, who later adopted her along with another child, Hannah Shady. Mary Elizabeth married Vince Maresh and lived in Deanville where they raised four children—one of them (Beverly) who married Donnie Blinka. Mary Elizabeth Maresh passed away on January 11, 2015, at the age of 105. Patsy Simek of Deanville Heritage Foundation, who has been collecting and compiling information about the Orphan Train Movement for years, addressed the audience with more information and photos. She later told me, “It is a true blessing that my husband Tom and I were asked to help with the depot restoration.” She showed me a lovely photo of Alice E. Matula (Deegan) who was given up for adoption in 1909. Alice and her brother, William John Martin, were adopted by Pete and Louise Matula near Frenstat. Alice is buried in Mansfield. Tommy Ryan announced that the dedication of the Orphan Train Museum in Deanville is set for 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, April 30 with many activities planned. The public is invited to attend. —SPJST—

Michaela Denazen On Saturday, March 12, volunteer Michaela Denazen worked in the museum on translating World War I-era family letters between Moravia and Texas. Michaela grew up in the Czech Republic; her family still lives in eastern Bohemia. In 2018-2019, Michaela and Susan attended the language classes held at the S.P.J.S.T. Assisted Living in Taylor. Michaela would bring her guitar and sing the old Czech songs Mikaela Denazen with the attendees.
