CANOEING THE COLORADO WITH CAMP KUBENA Shooting the rapids with his brother, sleeping under the stars next to a river, roasting s’mores on an open campfire with his dad. These are the fantastic experiences Camp Kubena Executive Director Rob Clift had growing up on the rivers of Texas. “Every time I cross the Colorado River . . . and when you live in Central Texas, that’s many times . . . I can’t help but hear the words of ‘The Texas River Song,’ sung by Lyle Lovett . . . ‘and the crooked Colorado runs weaving and winding,’” says Rob. “I want more people to have the opportunity to experience this uniquely Texas river trip,” he says. Rob is the executive camp director at Camp Kubena, a 182 acre outdoor conference, retreat, and summer camp destination that focuses on impacting lives through positive outdoor experiences. The facility is owned by SPJST. Inspired by his childhood canoeing adventures, Rob recently developed a challenging, exciting, and safe program to canoe a beautiful section of the Colorado River from Smithville to La
Grange. “The canoe guides at Camp Kubena are expertly trained by one of Texas’ best and most experienced training organizations, The Expedition School,” Rob says. “Because of Camp Kubena’s amazing facilities such as our beautiful lake, relaxing sleeping lodges, and fantastic dining hall, we are able to provide the proper training and safety information needed for canoeing the Colorado River. We want to make sure our customers have that positive outdoor experience and create memories that will last a lifetime.” To experience the Colorado River in Texas, is to experience peace, quietness, and reflection. It could be the kingfisher bird looking for its next meal, or maybe a white tail deer taking a sip of water. It’s also the excitement of a small section of swift water to navigate or enjoy a delicious lunch on an island of sand in the middle of the river. Finally, there is nothing better to quench the Texas heat than a nice dip in the cool water of the Colorado River.

others are unique and special, and if your mom is alive and well, I think you are very lucky. Mother’s Day is coming up on Sunday, May 8. It’s been almost two years since my mom passed away. I miss her more and more each day. If she was here, I would tell her how proud I am of her and how proud I am to be her child. My mom and I were very close - we talked and visited almost every day. I knew she would not be with me indefinitely so I tried to spend as much time as possible with her - and for that I am very grateful. If your mom is here and you have a good relationship with her, love and cherish her every day. Heartfelt Sympathy We extend our condolences to the family of Maxine Sefcik of Lodge 54, West. Sister Maxine passed away on Wednesday, April 13. She was an office assistant for her husband, Rudy Sefcik, who served as Věstník Editor from 1969 to 1992. Rosary was recited at 10 a.m. Tuesday, April 19 at Aderhold Funeral Home Chapel in West, followed by funeral services. Burial followed at St. Mary’s Cemetery in West. As a youth club reporter, I faithfully wrote articles and mailed them each month to the Sefciks at - and I
still remember the address - PO Box 85, West, Texas 76691. I was delighted to meet Mr. Rudy at a State Youth Achievement Day. To my surprise, not only did he know who I was from my articles and photos, but Mrs. Maxine recognized me, too. They both encouraged me to keep writing and to stay involved in SPJST. That was a very impressive moment for me as a child, and I have never forgotten that. Maxine was a precious lady with a heart of gold. I always enjoyed our visits at Lodge 54, West and at Westfest. She was elegant, classy, and had the most beautiful hair. Please keep Maxine’s family in your thoughts and prayers. Her obituary appears on page 12. It’s Your Life
Choice Matters First we make choices . . . and before
you know it, your choices will make you. So take time to think carefully about the direction of your life and the choices that you’ve been making. Then, try to come up with at least one “new and improved” choice that you can make today. Life is a series of choices. From the instant we wake up in the morning until the moment we nod off to sleep at night, we make countless decisions: decisions about the things we do, decisions about the words we speak, and decisions about the thoughts we choose to think. Simply put, the quality of those decisions determines the quality of your life. As believers in God, we have every reason to make wise choices. Yet sometimes, amid the inevitable hustle and bustle of life, we allow ourselves to behave in ways that we know are detrimental to our lives and our beliefs. When we do, we forfeit the joy and peace we might otherwise enjoy. As you consider the next step in your life’s journey, take time to consider how many things in life you can control, your through thoughts, your words, and your priorities. Then, if you sincerely want to discover peace and control, look at your choices and the effect you will have before you act on it. As independent agents, it is easy to write up what someone asked for without showing them other options. This makes
for a quick, easy sale, and they can always blame the customer for giving them what they asked for. They are doing a great injustice without showing you the other options available. As a client, your choice not to let the agent show you all the options can affect your family for life. The right solution may be the one you didn’t listen to. Make a conscious choice to hear all the options and you won’t regret your decision in the future. If they show you something you feel you can’t afford, pick another option, but now you know what is right and can have a goal to reach it. From the time you “wake up,” your choices will determine if you can pay your bills, fill your gas tank, take care of your family, make a living, and what your family will do without you . . . Every choice does affect everything you do. This is what your agent should be thinking everyday: I choose to succeed, give my customers knowledge to make their own choices, service my existing base, make changes in their lives to better them, and to make God and my family priority. I choose to make everyone I come into contact with a little better because they met me. What are your choices? My door is always open; figuratively and literally. Stay blessed, Delisle L. Doherty Vice President of Sales and Marketing 832-232-2049 —SPJST—
State Travels “Coming together is a beginning, keeping together is progress, working together is success.” ~ Henry Ford This quote reminds me of pre-Covid times and visiting our members around the state. I am thankful to finally travel again and visit with you, our membership. There is a lot of work to do to get back in the swing of things for SPJST. It starts with all of us. I believe SPJST is good for our families and communities. Our Czech families that came to this country passed on a beautiful legacy to us all. We learned hard work and determination is a combination that will bring success. SPJST will be 125 years old this year. Let’s work together to ensure the next 125 years will be successful. That is my challenge to you. Volunteer in Your Community It is very important that lodge members come together and volunteer more in their communities. Due to Covid, community and fraternal hours are very low. Why volunteer, you ask? • Volunteering enhances family interactions. • Volunteering improves personal skills. • Volunteering enriches the lives of individuals. • Volunteering engages in active learning. • Volunteering builds a sense of civic responsibility. Volunteering is an activity that families often find worthwhile when they do it together. They can spend “quality time” with each other while doing something good for others: • You get to know your children in new ways. • They get to know a different side of you. • Volunteering demonstrates skills and learning new ones. • Volunteering provides the chance to work toward the same goals. • Volunteering means talking about what you are doing together.

Signs You May Need to Seek Addiction Treatment Before seeking addiction treatment for addictive behaviors, it is essential to learn what it means to exhibit addictive behavioral patterns. Identifying symptoms of addiction-related behaviors is the first step to finding a suitable treatment for your needs. Individuals who are struggling with an addiction to drugs and alcohol are likely to exhibit the following addictive behavioral patterns and signs: • Compulsive urge to use substances • Insatiable cravings for substances • Insomnia or excessive sleep/ disrupted sleep patterns • Incoherent speech patterns • Loss of focus • Dilated pupils when using substances • Inability to control urges or one’s draw to substances It is also important to keep an eye on additional behavioral signs of addiction in those struggling, such as: • A preoccupation with obtaining and using substances • Prioritizing substances over every other aspect of one’s life, including relationships, careers, and paying bills • Choosing to use a substance to cope with grief or life stressors • Becoming increasingly dependent on a substance to reach a baseline mood or feeling of euphoria in daily life • Hiding or minimizing the use of substances in front of others to feign suspicion • Ongoing abuse of substances, even with physical, mental, and emotional damage
VĚSTNÍK • Experiencing physical, mental, and emotional signs of withdrawal when attempting to stop using the substance in question What to Look for in an Addiction Treatment Program in Texas Once you decide to find an addiction treatment program, it is essential to distinguish which programs are right for you based on your needs and the severity of your addiction. Finding the right addiction treatment program is possible by first learning the differences between inpatient and outpatient options. You should familiarize yourself with the type of activities and education you will need to participate in with each addiction treatment program you are considering. Whenever you begin searching for a potential rehabilitation center or treatment program, it is advisable to search for a nationally recognized and accredited organization that you can trust for both short-term stays and long-term care programs. Seek out treatment programs that provide evidence-based treatments that are individualized to your needs. Ensure that your preferred rehabilitation treatment program includes a qualified staff with multiple strategies to engage and motivate patients. Inpatient Rehab Centers If you are searching for an addiction treatment program that offers a zero-tolerance substance-free environment, consider Texas’ inpatient addiction treatment program. Inpatient rehabilitation treatment programs require individuals in need of assistance to live on-site throughout their program. Most inpatient treatment programs for addiction last anywhere from 30 days to longer than six months, depending on the needs of the individual. While you are enrolled in an inpatient treatment program, you will work to rewire your brain to prevent traps and addictive behavior patterns from emerging even after completing your program. Inpatient rehabilitation centers provide programs that include individual counseling, group therapy, and even therapeutic healing tools and activities. Choosing an inpatient treatment program is ideal for those looking to reset their way of living and thinking when it comes to their addiction and current behavior patterns.
Monday, April 25, 2022 Outpatient Programs Outpatient programs are also available for those who are not seeking longterm treatment options and those who prefer substance abuse treatment options outside of work or their home life. Outpatient treatment programs for addiction may include 12-step programs, sponsor meetings, and even individual therapy. While outpatient programs do not require those in need of help to relocate or remain on-site throughout their treatment, they can help provide necessary resources and support for recovery. Having a clear understanding of what substance abuse and dependence mean and how it relate to your own life is necessary to find the help you need to make a complete recovery.

Healthy ways to alleviate stress Stress can affect anyone at any time. Men, women, and even children experience stress, which can be triggered by professional, personal, and social pressures. Though anyone can experience stress, the pandemic illustrated how some people could be more vulnerable to it than others. A recent poll from the Kaiser Family Foundation indicated heightened stress among women related to the COVID-19 pandemic. That echoes findings from a 2016 study published in The Journal of Brain & Behavior that reported women are twice as likely to suffer from severe stress and anxiety as men. Chronic stress has been linked to various long-term health issues. That includes some side effects, such as menstrual problems, that are exclusive to

women. In addition, women confronting stress may turn to various unhealthy coping strategies, such as overconsumption of alcohol, drug use and overeating, compounding the negative effects of stress. Women who are feeling stressed out can look to various healthy ways to alleviate stress. • Make a concerted effort to socialize. An inability to socialize during the pandemic undoubtedly contributed to increased stress levels, and that’s not coincidental. According to American Addiction Centers, socializing increases a hormone that decreases anxiety levels and helps individuals feel more confident in their ability to cope with stress. Socializing also provides a chance to direct energy outward, thus providing a distraction from internal stress. • Make time to exercise. Exercise benefits the body in myriad ways and can be an effective tool in the fight against stress. According to the Mayo Clinic, one of the ways exercise helps to combat stress is that it imitates the fight or flight response created by stressful situations and essentially teaches the body how to work through stress. Much like practice prepares athletes’ bodies prior to a game, exercise prepares the body to respond to stress in a healthy way. • Perform good deeds. The American Addiction Centers notes the power of goodwill in combatting stress. When helping others, individuals activate neurotransmitters in their brains that are associated with positive feelings and reduced feelings of anxiety and worry. Volunteering with a local nonprofit, coaching a child’s sports team and mentoring a young person are some good deeds that can benefit others and the women behind the acts. • Embrace an optimistic outlook. A 2013 study from researchers at Concordia University found that the stress hormone cortisol is more stable among individuals with a positive outlook than those with a more pessimistic point of view. Prolonged elevated levels of cortisol can increase risk for anxiety, depression and heart disease, among other conditions. An optimistic outlook can help control those levels, making a positive attitude a valuable tool in the fight against stress. Women can try various strategies to alleviate stress in a healthy way. “The Texas River Song,” sung by Lyle Lovett says, “and The crooked Colorado runs weaving and winding.” A slow and meandering river, the Colorado River has very little rough water but plenty of Texas sights, sounds, and smells to capture your senses. When you are sitting in your canoe, and you are drawing your paddle through the sometimes clear water, there is a sense of being back in time. Maybe a time when the Czech settlers were discovering this central Texas area, or maybe Stephen F. Austin taking a break on his travels to get a drink of the cool Colorado. Whatever time in history, canoeing this section of the river between Smithville and La Grange is always an adventure. As you put your canoe in the river, you notice the riverbed is just sand and gravel. Later, you will find out this sand and gravel makes great islands in the middle of the wide river that is perfect for a lunch break or even to pitch a tent for the night. At Camp Kubena, we are always used to seeing the post oaks, pecans, and live oak trees, but what was surprising, was the abundance of sycamore and willow trees. There is something relaxing about canoeing under a weeping willow with its shade and long, thin branches gently sweeping over
your head as you gently glide safely beneath it. In the hill country area of Texas, we are used to seeing limestone outcroppings, but on our section of the Colorado, the river cuts deep into the rich soil of the flood plains of Central Texas. You can really see the deep, red clay and dark black topsoil that this river deposits on the plains. As we slowly move down the river, with the sun overhead, it is definitely time to take a dip in the cool, refreshing waters. As you sit in the water, take a quiet moment to reflect; you soon realize you are not the only animals that think the Colorado is a fantastic place to cool off. Because just on the banks, there is a herd of white tail deer coming over for a quick drink, or there is a Pileated woodpecker hammering away on one of the many sycamore trees, or that crazy armadillo digs in the soft sand for some grubs. The Colorado River is home to so many plants, birds, mammals, reptiles, and other animals; it’s hard to remember it all. Not only is the Colorado River home to plants and wildlife, but it is immersed in the rich history of Texas. Many battlefields, settlements, and other historic places lie hidden along this route. Fact: The Colorado River is approximately 862 miles long and is the 18th longest river in the United States. It originates just south of Lubbock, continuing
through Austin, until emptying into Matagorda Bay on the Gulf of Mexico. In the summer of 1821, before Texas was a part of the United States, Stephen F. Austin sold 307 parcels of land to 297 families that became known as the “Old Three Hundred.” One of those families was the Beason family who built and operated a ferry that crossed the Colorado River. After the Battle of the Alamo, Santa Anna’s army headed for San Jacinto. Sam Houston ordered that Beason’s Crossing be burned. After the population returned in 1837, it was officially renamed Columbus. After a long day on the Colorado River, we finally canoe up to the landing in La Grange. You really get that feeling of just having taken a ride through time. You have seen animals that are sometimes just in pictures; you have heard the calls of the birds that seem to be covered up by the daily bustle of life; and you have looked at the night stars of Texas and imagined a time, sometimes forgotten. —SPJST—

Czech Heritage Museum in Temple Quaint museum hides rich history
Traveling Soldier Feature • By Brandy Cruz, Sentinel News Editor Fort Hood Sentinel • February 10, 2022
A group of marionettes is on display inside the city of Temple’s Czech Heritage Museum. The “creepy” puppets have been hand-carved with a lot of detail.
There’s a little place you may have never heard of called the Czech Heritage Museum, located a mere four blocks from downtown. I discovered the museum when I first moved to Central Texas three and a half years ago, but this was my first opportunity to actually go inside and see all it has to offer. I had no idea I was stepping foot into a gold mine of information about Texas and the U.S. military, besides the wealth of information and relics regarding Czechoslovakia. I was greeted by Kenny Lange, assistant to the director of the museum, who was very knowledgeable about the rich history of the Czech people. He told me all about the Czech and German migration into Texas in the mid-1800s. Of course, they fled their own countries to rid themselves of war, only to be thrown right into the American Civil War. I thought it was interesting to learn that the first Texan to die during World War I was Czech-born Dominik Naplava, who wanted to do his part and had enlisted at the start of the war. After being rejected by the American military, he went to Canada to enlist. Naplava died on November 12, 1917. According to information in his display case, a bronze memorial tablet commemorating him now stands in front of the Houston City Hall. There’s a short, but interesting film you can watch that will explain a bit of
the Czech history and what brought them to Texas. I found it very informative, and it would be easy for children to follow along. The next room has a lot of beautiful handmade designs, clothing and even a large display of handmade marionettes. I admit, those things are creepy and should probably be used in a horror movie, if that hasn’t already been done. Despite the creep-factor, I can appreciate the time and patience it must have taken to carve out those wooden puppets. The museum also has a large library with genealogical information. They said they have helped many Czech people in the area research their family history. The end of the tour brings you right back around to where you entered. The entire Museum seems larger than it looks from the outside. Before leaving, you can learn about the game of tarock, a card game that dates back to the 1700s. Tarock card playing and lessons take place at 7 p.m., every first and third Tuesday of each month. The Czech Heritage Museum is located at 119 West French Avenue in Temple. Hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Tuesday through Saturday. For additional information, visit https://czechheritagemuseum.org, or call 254-899-2935. —SPJST—

Pardubická Muzika to perform at SPJST Lodge 47, Seaton
Czech brass band sets May 25 performance at Lodge 47, Seaton Pardubická Muzika will perform at SPJST Lodge 47, Seaton Star Hall on Wednesday, May 25, 2022. Doors will open at 6 p.m. for the 7 to 9 p.m. performance. The event will be hosted by Lodge 47. The traditional Czech line-up includes two clarinets, two flugelhorns, two bass flugelhorns, two trumpets, trombone, tuba, drums, and two amazing singers! Brass-band music has a long tradition at the Pardubice Conservatory. It has been a part of the Brass Department for almost as long as the Conservatory has
existed, representing it at many events in the region. In 2012, the Banda di Feste ensemble was founded. In the beginning, it focused exclusively on classical Czech brass music. As time went on, it began to play dance and popular music, so there wasn't as much room for brass band music in the band's repertoire anymore. Therefore, Banda di Feste eventually split into two separate en-

music with great passion, a sense of style and respect for tradition. The qualities of its members will hopefully help this ambitious band become one of the most prominent ensembles of the Conservatory as well as of the city of Pardubice and the Pardubice Region. The band is led by Michal Chmelař, the first trumpet of the Pardubice Chamber Philharmonic Orchestra. He is also the bandleader of the Křídlovanka brass band, with which he has twice won the European Championship in the interpretation of Czech and Moravian brass music in the category of professional ensembles. His experience and many years of practice guarantee that the brass band will build on the best traditions of brass music in Bohemia.
