Učme se česky Let Us Study Czech
Lekce třicet jedna Lesson 31
Spelling and Punctuation Pokračovat. Continued.
A common error made is when the formal Vy, Vás, Vám are used with a plural verb, although only one person is being addressed. Do not use a plural verb unless you are speaking to more than one person.
Incorrect: Vy, (one person) jste včera jeli do města.
Correct: Vy jste jel do města.
S S S
The pronoun já is not capitalized. Neither do we capitalize adjectives and adverbs indicating nationality. (This is done in English.)
Example:
Mám česku ženu. — I have a Czech wife.
Mluvíme česky. — We speak Czech.
S S S
Punctuation marks are the same in Czech as in English. (See also Lesson 5.) tečka (.) čárka (,) vykričnik (!) uvozovací středník (;) dvojtečka (:) pomlčka (—) otázník (?) znaménka (“ “) závorky ( ) rozdělováci znaménko (-)
S S S
One big difference in English and Czech punctuation has to do with the use of commas.
Commas are used:
—before and after a relative clause: Ztrátil jsem knihu, kterou mí dál.
—before and after a noun clause: Je dobře, že tomu rozumíš.
—before and after an adjective clause: Všechen cukr, všechna káva.
—before and after an adverbial clause: Jakmile mě uviděl, šel pryč.
S S S
Finally, quotation marks are always preceded by a colon. In Czech, the first quotation marks are on the line, not inverted, and are inverted at the end of the quotation. The trend in the United States is to use the standard English quotation marks — “ ” . Example: Otec řekl synovi: “Pokračuj a uč se!”

Kolache Festival September 10 in Caldwell
Burleson County Chamber of Commerce’s 37th Annual Kolache Festival will be Saturday, September 10, 2022, in Caldwell, Texas. The Kolache Festival is a celebration of the revitalization of Czech heritage . . . a county that was basically a Czech settlement realized their precious identity was slipping away. New generations knew not the language, the music, or the art of their ancestors. Not only do we grasp at the past, but we hurry to share the history . . . to bring into today’s focus the beauty, talent, and delight of the Czech people.
Come to the Kolache Festival and learn the wonderful Czech philosophy. Dance to the polka, and sing the songs of the musicians. Taste the true ethnic food, and lend your soul to the fulfillment of the Czech cultural heritage.

State of Texas Kolache Bake Show Sept. 10 in Caldwell
Kolache, the original Czech wedding pastry, is a favorite national dessert throughout Czech Republic. The art of baking kolaches came with the early immigrants to Burleson County. Bakers have competed for 36 years to win the coveted title of Grand Champion Kolache Baker of Burleson County. Over the years, the bake show has grown to six divisions. It is open to adult and youth nonprofessional professional and champion bakers.
The 2022 State of Texas Kolache Bake Show will be held at First United Methodist Church, 306 West Fox Street in Caldwell, Texas. Guidelines are:
A. The Kolache Bake Show is open to youth, adult non-professional, and professional bakers. Youth ages 9 through age 18, or still enrolled in high school as of January 1, 2022, may enter the Youth Division. Professionals are those individuals who have owned or been employed by a bakery and/or those who have received more than $1,000 in gross sales from sale of baked goods from their home or any other means. Once entered as professional, then always a professional. All others are considered adult non-professional or youth.
B. All Burleson County non-professionals adults may enter in Burleson County or State Division. They may enter in only one division in any given year.
C. The Champion division is for any baker who has ever won a Grand Champion title in any division. Entering this division is optional for Grand Champion winners. D. A kolache entry consists of 6 average size kolaches of the same filling and dough. These will be transferred by the committee to a plain disposable plate. A baker may enter one entry in each of the 12 classes: Apple, Apricot, Cheese, Meat and Cheese Combination, Other and Cheese Combination, Peach, Poppyseed, Prune, Sausage, Other Fruit, Other Meat, and Other. (Tea Rings, Strudels, or any other form of baked goods are not accepted. See E. for Kolache Roll.)
E. The Kolache Roll division is open to all bakers of all ages, both non-professional and professional. A Kolache Roll must be made with kolache dough (yeast) of any filling. A baker may enter one entry in each of 3 classes: Cream Cheese, Poppyseed, and Other. An entry consists of 6 approximately 1-inch slices of the same filling and dough.
F. All Bake Show entries must be made by one person. Team entries are not accepted.
G. Registration will be from 7:45 a.m. to 10 a.m. on Saturday, September 10, 2022. I. After judging is complete, baked goods will be offered to the public for a donation to cover the cost of the event.
