Losing a family member is always tough - especially when it is someone that you deeply love and admire. My uncle Leon Zavodny passed away on Saturday, August 13. He lived a good, full life - 98 years. He was my dad’s older brother. Thinking about it, Uncle Leon was the one person who was in my dad’s entire life. He was there when my dad was born, and he grieved when my dad passed last year. He was my last surviving uncle. He also loved SPJST. I am sad for Aunt Vallie and my cousins.

I am most honored to re ceive your scholarship, the SPJST Ver nell Foyt Scholarship. Your generosity will aid my tuition, books, and other col lege expenses, allowing me to focus and be successful in my studies as I pursue my dream of composing and arranging music for film and television. I will be entering my freshman year at the Moore’s School of Music at the University of Houston this fall. I plan to graduate in the spring of 2026 with a bachelor of music composition degree. In addition to being accepted to at tend the Moore’s School of Music, I au ditioned, interviewed, and was accepted to begin my studies in my major this fall. As a freshman, I will be taking sev eral classes related to my major includ ing music theory, and will therefore, spread my core classes throughout my college years. I am very excited to start college this fall, and I will continue to put in 100 percent into everything I do. In addition to enjoying jazz, I have a passion for the music of my Czech and German heritages. I have been playing alongside my father’s band, his friend Donnie’s band, and the Round Top Brass Band, and I have enjoyed it every time. I will continue to play with each group when I have the opportunity. Thank you again for the SPJST Ver nell Foyt Scholarship award and invest ing in my future. The Janak Barn and Texas Czech Agricultural Museum dis plays farm practices and implements from the late 1800s to 1940. There will also be mule-drawn wagon rides around the grounds all day. The Czech Village houses two music museums. The Czech Music Museum of Texas is located in the Kalich House and features four genres of Czech music –classical, folk, polka, and liturgical. The Polka Lover’s Club of Texas Museum is located in the Hoelscher House and Huebner Center and features a display of Texas polka bands, as well as mem orabilia and photos of the Polka Lover’s Club of America, Texas Chapter.

We look forward to celebrating with you at the TCHCC Heritage Fest and Muziky and 125 Years of SPJST Celebration. In con junction with this event, KJT hosts the tarock tournament annually and would like to extend an invitation to all SPJST tarock players to join us on Saturday, October 15, 2022. The TCHCC Beer Tasting Com petition follows at 4 p.m. Evening Program in the Amphitheater Looking for a spiritual lift – and a lot more to cap off the day? Then you’ll want to attend the evening concert at the Sanford Schmid Amphitheater, also on the grounds of the TCHCC. Gates open at 5:30 p.m. Leading off the show at 6 p.m. will be the D’Vine Testament Gos pel Singers with their covers of old and new hymns and gospel songs. Follow ing at 7:30 p.m. will be World Premiere Elvis Tribute with Kraig Parker that takes place from 7 until 9:30 p.m. in the Sanford Schmid Amphitheater on the grounds of the TCHCC. Because of seating limitations – 400 this will be a ticketed performance. Watch the Vestnik for ticket information. The evening comes to an end with a bang with the huge HEB Fireworks Finalé above the Amphitheater. Experience the Czech Village Attendees are encouraged to stroll TCHCC’s Czech Village, an early 1900s recreated village complete with residen tial houses, barns, and stores. Demon strations of early life for the immigrants will take place across the grounds throughout the day. See the Zapalac Saw Mill process logs to lumber; see press operations come alive in the Czech Newspaper Museum; experience first hand blacksmithing, corn shelling and grinding, hay pressing, and the making of textiles, soap, noodles, sausage, honey and more. The Antique Farm Equipment Show, sponsored by the South Texas Wheel Spinners and Crank Twisters Club, and an Antique and Classic Car Show by H&H Automotive and Farmer’s Insur ance will spread through the village.

It’s Not Just Death and Debt If one were to shop for life insurance, they will find hundreds of products being offered. The products will offer large amounts of insurance for little money, final expense plans, college funds, burial, mortgage and credit protection insurance, and anything else you can think of. It can get very confusing, and many people end up with the wrong insurance. When I sat in on my mother-in-law’s funeral arrangements, I saw a salesperson (funeral director) sit ting across from my father-in law and his children selling everything under the sun. He had already had a plot, but with all the new technology (colored lining, oil paint ing, slide shows, etc.), the funeral was over $24,000. When we added the cem etery cost (double head stone, onsite service, digging the hole, and burying), it cost another $12,000. This was because no one could say no. Don’t put your loved ones in this situation - where they have to leave something out that they think you deserve. That was just the funeral. What about paying off the house mortgage, credit cards, and taxes. What about if you have children who you want to send to college. If they don’t have the money, that child just had their entire life altered. They may have hopes to be a doctor, but now they are a cashier because they could not afford college. There are products that fit every need. It may be a combination of products that fit your needs. You have hundreds of pro ducts to choose from. When it is all said and done, you can take these hundreds of products and break them into three cate gories. Understanding this will give you a road map to fulfill your needs.
Term Insurance - This is pure insur ance. It is designed to cover large debt while it is being paid off. It is no different than your auto insurance. You buy auto insurance to protect your car in case something happens. If you never get into an accident, the company keeps the money. With homeowner’s insurance, you protect your home - but hope it never burns down. It’s the same with term. If you live to the term, the company keeps the money. You don’t drive your car into a tree because you didn’t get to use your insurance. It’s no different - you don’t want to use it; you just want to know it is there just in case. Whole Life - There are various whole life products, but they are prima rily designed to cover death and debt. These are the products that insurance was designed around. Bury you, leave money to pay debts, and allow your loved ones to continue to live the life you built for them. In the 1600s, when a ship was leaving shore, someone would take the manifest and draw a line under the list then sell insurance to pay the family if the ship never returned. If a person bought the insurance, the gentleman would write their name under the line (thus the term ‘underwriter’). Whole life is to make sure the family is paid if you don’t come back. Universal Life (UL) Products These products are designed for living benefits, such as supplementing college or retirement. They work best when they are overfunded with the idea that some one will be taking out money later. If you buy this wrong, it will be 15 years before you know it and be too expensive to fix. This product is complex and should be discussed with someone present who un derstands the best way to manipulate it for your situation. It must be managednot just sold. It is okay to mix and match. In many cases, multiple policies are the best solu tion. It’s about what needs to be done to accomplish your goals. It’s not about just death and debt. State YAD Congratulations to the winners and all the youth who traveled to Temple and participated at State Youth Achievement Day. It was great seeing everyone at State YAD again this year. Thank you to the leaders who vol unteered their time to make it a great day for our youth. We need to work together and bring more youth into the program. In 2019, we had 978 entries for District Youth Achievement Days. This year, in 2022, we had 680 entries. That is around 300 entries who did not partici pate this year. Looking at youth par ticipation in 2019, we had 145 youth and at State YAD in 2022, we had 102 youth who participated. That brings me to my next question. Have you competed our Youth Program Revital ization survey? Go to https://spjst.org/youth-sur vey/ and complete the survey NOW. Your thoughts and ideas are important to us. This gives you some ownership to the SPJST Youth Program. We need to make things easier for our youth and our leaders. I hope to see more surveys in my inbox very soon.

The celebration will take place on Sat urday, October 15 with the opening ceremony starting at 1 p.m. at the Lodge 19, Velehrad Hall which is lo cated on the fairgrounds. After we had our discussion with our LITs at teen camp, I want to give them and our younger youth the chance to give their ideas for the 2023 theme.

I hope you are planning to attend Cars & Guitars on Saturday, October 29 at Camp Kubena. Activities will in clude classic cars, music, food, arts/crafts vendors, kids’ activities, a disc golf tournament, and family fun. Camp Kubena is located at 2001 Wal deck Road in Ledbetter. The day will feature a car show, music festival, si lent auction, 50-50 raffle, disc golf tournament, vendor booths, food, trunk-or-treat, and other kids’ events. Next Meeting—September 11 The next lodge meeting is Sunday, September 11 at 2 p.m. Trustee Meeting Brother Urbanovsky opened the meeting and called for the minutes of the last trustee meeting. Sister Peterson read the minutes, and the membership approved the report. Brother Urbanovsky reported on the SPJST Lodge 6, Inc. accounts at Cit izens Bank and PointWest Bank. Brother Bobby Dobecka will follow up with West-Tex Welding regarding the Lodge 6, Cottonwood seeks volunteers for Westfest booth Lodge 6, Cottonwood meeting was held on Friday, August 5, 2022, at 6:30 p.m., followed by a trustee meeting. Brother Don Urbanovsky called the meeting to order. Quinlan Dobecka led membership in the Pledge of Allegiance and the SPJST Motto, followed by a moment of silence. Sister Irene Peterson reported 13 adults, six youth, and one guest were present. Minutes of the last meeting were read by Sister Barbara Hykel and the treas urer’s report was provided by Sister Peggy Dobecka. Both reports were ap proved by membership present. Sister Jeanette Beseda gave the fra ternal report, noting the upcoming SPJST 125th anniversary celebration. The lodge donation will be discussed at the trustee meeting. SPJST Lodge 1, Fayetteville has re ceived several preservation grants from Texas Dance Hall Preservation (TDHP) in recent years, and the lodge is well on its way to a new chapter. The work done so far looks great. The floors make the hall look rich and warm. New paint and new shutters have been added outside, too. They tackled some electric up grades earlier and started on some cos metic improvements. Now kitchen and bathroom upgrades are next. Great job done by the board and members keeping this iconic SPJST hall true to its history while looking to the future assuring it will be here for years to come. Bravo! Sister Dobecka reported that the youth club will honor grandparents with a noon meal prepared on September 11. Old Business Brother Urbanovsky provided an overview of the lodge expenses and net profit received from the Lodge 6 picnic. He provided a typed report to each member showing the income and costs of the 2021 picnic versus the 2022 pic nic. Questions and input of members were discussed. The picnic was a suc cess, and there was an increase in profit over the prior year. New Business Building repair was discussed as an air conditioning technician had to be called out to repair an air conditioner during a weekend booking. Prepara tions for Westfest will be discussed at the trustee meeting following this meet ing.Kim Seith celebrated an August birthday. My apologies to Kim for not getting her picture taken for the Vestnik. Progressive door prize drawn was Billie Hauk, not present. They will dance the beseda at the Kolache Festival on Sep tember 10 and have a Grandparent’s Day celebration/membership drive on September 11. They voted to purchase $300 in items for Stuff the Bus. Under old business, a motion was passed to replace three air conditioners in theUnderhall.new business, a motion was passed to renew our sponsorship for the athletic program. President Glenn Kaminsky called the meeting to order. All recited the Pledge of Allegiance, and there was a moment of silent prayer for deceased members. Then Mr. Kaminsky said a prayer for our luncheon and recessed the meeting for the meal and social. When the meeting reconvened, he thanked Jeanette Kaminsky for getting the meal together and wished Anton and Helen Kelner a happy 60th wedding an niversary on June 2. He called for the minutes to be read from the March Lodge 15, Buckholts installs new sign Lodge 15, Buckholts recently installed its new SPJST sign. The lodge hall is located on Highway 36 in Buckholts, Texas.

Brother Urbanovsky provided a re port on the repairs done to the lodge’s food vendor booth. Brother Matt Beseda will move the booth to the Westfest fair grounds. Discussion was held regarding pricing of the food items offered. Sister Dobecka will make necessary adjust ments to the menu board. Sister Beseda volunteered to manage the food booth on Friday night, along with Brother Jody Krizan. Discussion was held re garding those individuals in charge of ordering the food for Westfest. He led the Pledge of Allegiance and a silent prayer for our deceased members. Linda pre sented the treasurer’s report. It was lengthy because of the great Tribute to Vrazels Polka Band event. The members had many happy times at the large event. Never has the writer seen so many cars in the big parking lot and so many happy people inside. The event was a result of long hours of work by Linda and Daniel Wilde. Many members worked hard, too. Jason Hoelscher, Roy Malcik, Steve Bruggman, and Derek Campbell helped Daniel Wilde with the fried cabbage and cooked sausage. Kim Campbell, Kim Malcik, Brenda Maddux, Patricia Hoel scher, and Cathy Bruggman worked several days and early on Sunday at the event. Salute to all volunteers! Thanks to all who attended, too. Old business was tended to quickly. If you have a GPS, put Flag Hall in and it will come to the hall. Using the ad dress in Burlington does not work as well.The roof was mentioned in new busi ness. Our meal on Sunday, October 30 will be dine-in and plates-to-go like we did before the pandemic hit. We will reintroduce our famous Flag Hall hamburgers at the Squeezebox dance on February 5. A portable grill went kaput and was the reason for the demise. Our Oscar Store Christmas party was mentioned.

The meeting of SPJST Lodge 54, West was held Friday, June 3, 2022, at St. Joseph’s Hall and called to order at 7 p.m. by President Freddie Kaluza. The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Mr. Ka luza followed by a moment of silence in memory of our departed members Er nest Tobola Jr., Richard Picha, Maxine Sefcik, and Helen Smith. We also held a moment of silence for the Ukranian people and all the loss of lives and hard ships placed on them and their country. All officers and agents were present for the meeting except Vice President Wil burn Willis and Agent Jean Martin. There were 16 members and guests in attendance in accepting the 50- and 75year pins. President Freddie Kaluza wel comed all who were in attendance for theThemeeting.minutes of the last meeting were read by Janice Kaluza. There was a cor rection by Mary Lou Mynar to the mi nutes. Linda Kaluza made a motion that the rest of the minutes be accepted, and Terry Sefcik seconded the motion. Mo tion passed. Janice Kaluza also read a letter to the lodge members written by the Sefcik family thanking us for estab lishing the endowment fund for their parents through SPJST Home Office. Linda gave the fraternal report and announced SPJST and Camp Kubena would be presenting “Cars & Guitars”a car show and music festival - on Sat urday, October 29 at Camp Kubena in Ledbetter. All lodge members are en couraged to celebrate Flag Day on Tues day, June 14 in honor of our American flag with raising our flags high and proud. Marcela Vaculik made a motion, seconded by Mary Lou Mynar, to accept the fraternal report. The motion passed. Mary Lou Mynar gave the treasurer’s report. Janice Kaluza made a motion to accept the treasurer’s report, seconded by Beulah Zahirniak. The motion passed.Vice President Wilburn Willis was not in attendance, but President Freddie Kaluza announced that he spoke with Vice President Willis who mentioned that he presented the first Rudy and Maxine Sefcik Scholarship from the newly established endowment to Jenna Rose Maler at the West High School Scholarship Awards Ceremony. Mr. Willis wanted to let us know that he al ways enjoys giving out the awards and was very proud of the students. In old business, President Freddie Kaluza let everyone know the new banner we donated is already up at the Janek T-Ball Field and encouraged us to go out and see it. It will be up for three years then we will have to renew our space to continue advertising at the field for our lodge. President Kaluza will try to take a picture of the banner and put it in the Vestnik. In new business, President Kaluza announced we will be presenting the 50and 75-year pins. He read some litera ture on the cost of living, popular films, popular songs and musicians, and tele vision programs in 1947 and 1972 for the 75- and 50-year pin holders. It was very interesting to learn how drastically times have changed and the cost of liv ing years ago. All members receiving a 50-year pin for 2021 were Evelyn F. Cepak, Paul Cepak, Veronica Cepak, Deborah Deb bendener, Audra M. Geisler, Henry Ka pavik Jr., Caroline Kaska, Johnny J. Mynar III, and Edwin Sulak Sr. Members receiving a 75-year pin for 2022 were JoAnn Cepak, Linda Frances Gipson, and Dwain Roy Pomykal. The only members present for the pin cere mony were 50-year members Henry Ka pavik, Evelyn Cepak, and Paul Cepak.
Lodge 29, Taylor held its regular meeting on Wednesday, August 10, 2022. President Ronnie Rieger called the meeting to order and led the Pledge of Allegiance. We had a moment of si lence for our departed. The July minutes were read and approved. All officers were present. Tammy Cannon gave the treasurer’s report. Linda Pospisil read a thank you note from Heather Raesz for Lodge 29 allow ing her to hold the funeral dinner for Clay Raesz at the hall. Jesse Pospisil gave the property com mittee report. We are having the beer boxes checked out for coolness. The committee is also in the process of re moving the old barbecue pit area. Ronnie discussed the barbecue cookoff and asked if anyone could contact sponsors for the event. We always need judges for the meat entries. Silent auc tion items are needed. He reminded members of the appreciation dinner for barbecue sponsors in August and asked members to bring desserts for the meal. The Granger Livestock Booster Club is having a fundraising event on Sep tember 17. Adolph Grieger made a mo tion for Lodge 29 to purchase a ticket, and Frankie Pustejovsky seconded. The July meeting of SPJST Lodge 66, Waco was called to order by Pres ident Douglas Galler at 5:30 p.m. on Monday, July 25, 2022, at St. Paul’s Church in Bellmead. In roll call of of ficers, all were present. Six members and four guests were present. The minutes from the June meeting were read by Secretary Dana McAdams and approved as read. Then Sister Diana Engelke read thank you notes from the Ronald McDonald House in Temple and from Shepherd’s Heart for the recent do nations.Brother Douglas then gave the frater nal report which now includes a youth club report. “Saddle Up with SPJST” Tshirts can be ordered online if anyone would like one. The 125th anniversary celebration is coming up on October 15 in LaThereGrange.was no insurance report. The Cheer and Condolence Committee sent a get well card to Sister Jane Galler. Next was the bookkeeper’s report given by Treasurer Sister Diana. In old business, Brother John En gelke thanked everyone for the donation to cook hamburgers at Camp Kubena. He said that they were a big hit. Brother John also reported that camp went well this year. Brother Ronald Neumann asked about the status of the Lodge 66 Facebook page, and there was discus sion about adding content in the coming months.Innew business, there was a discus sion about getting some gift cards or cash for the 125th anniversary drawing. We decided to make a decision at one of the future meetings. Sister Dana made a motion to give our July donation to Car itas. The motion, seconded by Brother trons and new players. The annual Machu Family Reunion is Sunday, September 25, 2022, at SPJST Lodge 48, Beyersville, located at 10450 FM 618 in Taylor, Texas 78674. We gather to honor the memory of our ancestors - Pavel and Rozina (Trlica) Machu, Martin and Anna (Zetak) Machu, and Josef and Rozina (Mazac) Machu, who emigrated from Moravia in the late 1800s. Since addresses change and are often not sent to our attention, please remember to invite everyone connected to these families to attend. Registration will begin at 11 a.m.; ho wever, anyone who would like to help with setting up will be welcomed at 9:30 a.m. A noon buffet meal will be served around 12:30 p.m. We ask that each family bring a vegetable or salad and a dessert to share. Theresa Haag, —SPJST—Secretary Fort FriendshipWorth Club President Lola Taylor opened the meeting with the Pledge of Allegiance and the “Hail Mary” for our members, their families, and our blessed country. Our theme was an ice cream social, and Lola Taylor and Sharron Connelly provided the beautiful decorations. Sharron told us the Persians invented ice cream in 400 BC, which was served to the families in the Royal Palace. It con sisted of iced rose water, vermicelli saf fron, fruits, and other sweet flavors. Debbie Skrasek’s precious, little granddaughter Jaycie Skrasek was se lected as our Ice Cream Princess. The Club treated everyone to all-you-can-eat banana splits with all the trimmings. Although we did not have a meeting in July because we dined at Golden Cor ral, Secretary Mary Martinez recorded the minutes of our meeting. We really appreciate her devotion to the Club, and we are so thankful for her husband, Ted, who picks up the chicken.
Treasurer Margaret Sears reported on our finances. We are so grateful for the many things she does for the Club and for her help with preparing and helping with the meetings.

Lodge 185, New Braunfels meets August 28; collects school supplies Lodge 185, New Braunfels will hold its regular meeting on Sunday, August 28, 2022, at Peace Lutheran Church, 1147 South Walnut in New Braunfels, Texas. The youth club will meet at 4 p.m. followed by the adult meeting at 5 p.m.The youth club will be collecting school supplies for Communities In School. All donations are accepted and needed for kids - especially this year. Communities in School is such a won derful organization and is a lifeline for many, many kids in our community. We are so proud of our youth club for choosing this project each year and making it a huge success.

2022 Bell County Senior Expo set for Sept. 27 The Annual 2022 Bell County Senior Expo will be held at the Bell County Expo Center on Tuesday, September 27 from 8:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. This event is free and open to the public. Cooking meals together as a family can add some fun to a task that's already a part of many families’ daily routines. Children can learn quite a bit from cooking, as preparing recipes can re inforce school lessons. Family cooking nights also pose a great opportunity to create lasting memories. Various sources indicate that children are more likely to remember experiences from their youth rather than the presents they receive. Some of those cherished experiences can be enjoyed in the kitchen alongside mom and dad. In addition to creating lasting, fun memories, cooking together as a family may make children less likely to com plain about foods since they have lent a hand in their creation. Furthermore, cooking together fosters a special feel ing of unity and may establish a no-pres sure, safe space for conversation. With so many benefits, families may be wondering how they can foster and improve time spent together in the kitchen. Here are some ways to do so. Organize age-appropriate tasks. Little hands can only handle so much. A toddler can pour and stir ingredients, while an older child or teenager may be ready to chop ingredients or sauté at the stove. Expect some mess. Parents and other adults should go into any meal cre ation process with children expecting things to get a tad messy. It may be pos sible to minimize messes by setting up workstations covered by plastic table cloths which can be folded up and shaken into the trash. Encourage chil dren to sit down so they don't inadver tently spread any messes to another part of the house. Begin with simple recipes. An ini tial foray into family cooking should in volve a recipe that's easy to prepare and perhaps doesn’t require too many ing redients. Build on each success after that, growing bolder with each sub sequent recipe. Make it a multi-generational ex perience. For many families, Sunday was the opportunity to gather at grandma's house after religious worship or to check in and spend time together. Rekindle this tradition by hosting weekly or monthly family meals where everyone gets to take part in bringing the meal to the table. This is an ideal oppor tunity for grandparents to pass down family recipes and regale grandchildren with funny stories and memories. Plan for things to take a little extra time. Preparation time is likely to take a bit longer when multiple hands are stirring the pot. Families can slow down and employ some patience. Adults should resist the urge to take over when children may not be doing things the right way. If meals need to be on the table at certain times, start an hour or two earlier than you otherwise would to account for some confusion and even a potential restart. Eliminate as many distractions as possible. The kitchen may be the heart of the home, but it can be dangerous to be around knives and other cooking utensils and instruments. Distractions like televisions or phones can draw at tention away and potentially lead to in juries from pots boiling over or children getting too close to hot flames. Cooking as a family is very benefi cial and can be made even more so with some handy tips.

MG: On the Americanized kroj, we do a gathered ruffle around the neck. It’s softer and flatter . . . those full ones have yards and yards of lace and need to be stiff. And I’m pleating one for an au thentic [kroj] right now, and it’s made out of heavy, starched cotton with a real pretty lace on the edge, and there is eight yards of material pleated into that one piece around the neck.

TM: What do you know about the cos tume that involves a black scarf? MG: I’m trying to remember the region she is from, but that is an authentic. I believe it’s more Bohemian. I’m pretty sure about that, closer to the German border. In lower Moravia, there’s an area where the costumes are real ornate, like those others we’ve been talking about. And then if you go up into Mo ravia, it gets mountainous, and the cos tumes become simpler. Instead of boots, they wear moccasins with heavy wool socks. And in Bohemia, the cos tumes there are not always very ornate. They’re longer skirts and maybe sim pler.

Texas Monthly: How did you begin making kroj? Maggie Grmela: kroj expresses our Czech heritage. We started this with the beginning of WestFest, and at the same time the beginning of our dance group, the Czech Folk Dancers. So, we needed costumes and it’s very hard to get au thentic ones. We had to make krojs that were similar, but more care-able fabrics, because so many of the authentics are made out of wools and heavy cottons.
TM: Can you tell me about the red head scarves that are part of some costumes?
TM: What about the lace collars?
Miss Texas Czech-Slovak Zoe Peterek Kroj dresses have a significant role in Westfest, a yearly Texas Czech festival. Maggie Grmela has been stitching kroj, traditional Czech dresses, for over 35 years in her hometown of West, Texas. The dressmaker’s personal adaptation of kroj, which she makes at her shop Maggie’s Fabric Patch, evolved from a need to make costumes that allowed for comfortable dancing in the Lone Star State’s sweltering cli mate.Grmela, whose great-grandparents moved to the U.S. from the Moravia re gion of the Czech Republic 45 years ago, helped launch WestFest, the town’s yearly Czech celebration. Every Labor Day Weekend, locals and parade-marchers donning kroj (pro nounced “croy”) mingle amidst ko laches, polka, and good pivo (that’s Czech for Despitebeer).long hours this week tend ing to last-minute kroj alterations at her shop, Grmela took a few minutes be fore WestFest to chat with Texas Monthly about the festival, the finer points of kroj-making, and what each part of the costume symbolizes (Grmela made three of the kroj pic tured).

TM: You specialize in making an Amer icanized version of kroj. What’s differ ent about authentic kroj? MG: When you see a skirt that has a flo ral brocade with bobbin lace all around it, that’s from Moravia, a historic region of the Czech Republic. And what makes those costumes difficult is how they’re made. That brocade is called an apron, and then in the back is a hand-pleated, black little skirt. The sleeves are stiffly starched and have a little pleats in them. They have a cardboard form. Usually this type of kroj has roses on it.
MG: That red head scarf is actually a huge, red square of fabric that has a bold, wide, floral print around the peri meter of it, and it’s folded certain ways to go with certain costumes. So it’s folded the way she has it on her head for that costume, but another area in the Czech Republic may have it folded dif ferent. So it symbolizes the area they are from.In some areas [people] may wear wreaths of flowers in their hair, and that symbolizes an unmarried girl or young lady. When they go into the scarf or a bonnet type, it is supposed to signify a married lady. But then again in some areas, they’ll all wear a scarf from chil dren on up. So it signifies that area, how and what is worn.

In Memory of Leon Zavodny Leon Zavodny, 98, passed away peacefully at home in Leedale, Texas, on Saturday, August 13, 2022. The family accepted visitors at Sca nio-Harper Funeral Home in Temple on Wednesday, August 17 from 9 to 10 a.m. Funeral immedi ately followed at 10 a.m. Burial was at Seaton Ceme tery in LeonSeaton.wasborn in Cyclone on April 23, 1924, to the late Joseph Frank Zavodny of Polanski, Moravia, Czech Republic, and the late Lydia (Bartos) Zavodny of Fayette County, Texas. He met Vallie Pechal at Tom Sefcik Hall and married her two years later on January 10, 1948, in Temple. He was a resident of Bell County area for his entire life. Leon was also known as “Blue,” a name given to him by his late brother Joe Lee. Leon’s father passed away before he had the opportunity to finish school. He ultimately took over the family farm to take care of his mother and siblings. Leon’s passions were farming, repairing his farm equipment, restoring old trac tors, and making sure his kids were taken care of by providing cattle, hogs, and chickens that they helped process .
three children—sons Michael Chad and Ryan Keith and daughter Shelby Eliza beth. James loved spending quality time with each of his children. He was able to instill the importance of family, a sense of integrity, a good work ethic, and a love for God to his children. He was a proud dad! James was an even prouder Popo to his grandchildren. He loved each for their own personality. He enjoyed the smallest things beginning with rocking them to sleep, listening to their day, playing cards, cuddling, watching their sporting events, and especially the “I loveJamesyous.”was a disciple for God. He drove the golf cart at both UHBC and Brazos Fellowship for many years. He never missed an opportunity to invite others to church and even unbeknownst to the pastors, their sermon began and ended on his golf cart. James loved people, and he loved the Lord. He was a member of SPJST Lodge 189, Bryan-College Station. James is survived by his wife of 51 years, Carol Lynn Schroeder; son Mi chael Schroeder (wife Linda) and chil dren Shelby, Kelsey, Hayden, and Emily; son Ryan Schroeder (wife Angela) and children Erick, Marse, Cole, Christian, and Ryan Grace; daugh ter Shelby Gilbert and children Emma lyn and Elizabeth; mother-in-law Dorris Carrell; brother-in-law Larry Lehew; sisters-in-law Betty Schroeder and D’Lynn Lehew; and nieces, nephews, extended family and friends that he dearly loved and cherished. He was con firmed in the Christian faith at Zion Lu theran Church of Anderson and was baptized as an adult at University Heights Baptist Church in Huntsville. James graduated from Anderson High School in 1968. He attended Blinn College and Sam Houston State Univer sity where he graduated in December 1973 with a teaching degree. James then went on to obtain his master’s degree in education from Prairie View A&M Uni versity. He had a great impact on many throughout his teaching and coaching career, also while serving as a principal and assistant principal within the Cold spring, Anderson, and Willis Independ ent School Districts. After retirement, James’ love of people and his desire to serve others led him back to selling insurance. At the time of his death, James was the re gional general agent (RGA) for Districts One and Two in SPJST. James married his high school sweet heart, Carol Lynn Smith, at the Shiro Baptist Church on May 22, 1971. To gether, they built a life and raised their
. as well as a big garden to feed a family of seven. He loved to work hard, but made sure he took his family on va cations to Texas lakes and to the Texas coast every year. He was a carpenter and then ulti mately went to work at Alcoa in Rock dale. He retired from Alcoa in 1986. He served as president and vice pres ident of SPJST Lodge 47, Seaton. He sang in the Seaton Choral Group and performed with the Beseda Dancers for many years. He was a member of the 25 year club of the United States Steel Workers.Leonalways lived life to the fullest and never missed an opportunity to get out and have a good time. He enjoyed dancing polkas and waltzes with his wife, Vallie, listening to Czech music, singing Czech songs, playing his accor dion, traveling, fishing, hunting, and later in life, reading as many non-fiction books he could get his hands on.

She would often talk about her late husband, Sam, and how he so sweetly courted her before their marriage in May 1954. She worked at the VA for many years and was proud of her education, business, and career. She was a humble, kind, and generous soul known well for her devo tion to her family and God. Lodge 30, Taiton youth wins awards at State YAD Dear Vestnik Readers, On Saturday, July 30, 2022, my family and I attended State YAD in Temple, Texas. I enjoyed socializing with my SPJST family and friends. I participated at State YAD in group talent. My group talent from Lodge 30, Taiton line danced to the “Boot Scootin’ Boogie” so I got to wear my cowboy hat. I really enjoyed the dance and per forming on the big stage at the Frank W. Mayborn Civic and Convention Center. I won first place on my crafts in 3rd to 5th grades on my hobby kit and pic torial arts where I drew a red Ferrari. Lodge 30, Taiton youth: dream come true to be crowned District Queen Dear Vestnik Readers, SPJST District Six held its YAD on Sunday, July 10, 2022 at Taiton Hall. I worked very hard on trying to get everything ready for YAD. I also worked very hard on my speech for the queen’s contest. The days passed by so fast for me. On Sunday, August 7, 2022, District One hosted a swim party and social at the Caldwell Pool. It was a great time with food and fun fellowship to celebrate the end of summer and back to school. Our youth club played a game with the Vestniks. We had challenges to see if youth knew what the Vestnik is all about and if they could find dif ferent parts of the Vestnik. 28 Monday, August 22, 2022 VĚSTNÍK Second Quarter Merit Points and Meeting Attendance
The youth leader or assistant youth leader is responsible for keeping track of the merit points for each active member of the youth club. The points are to be sent to the State Fraternal Director on the Quarterly and Merit Point Reports each quarter. Youth club members are also en couraged to keep up with their points and turn them in to the youth leader on a quarterly basis. This system helps both the youth leader and the youth member keep better records of youth participation. Current, official Quarterly and Merit Point Reports, available from the State Fraternal Director, may only be used in the Merit Point Contest. The Quarterly and Merit Point Reports sent to the State Fraternal Director by the youth leader will be kept on file for at least six months following the conclu sion of the contest.

Merit points are earned for only those activities listed under Youth Point Values. An activity can only earn points in one category on the point sheet. When in doubt about any activity earn ing points, contact the State Fraternal Di rector prior to the conclusion of the contest. Everyone will be subject to the same rules in every contest. Failure to comply with any rule shall mean immediate with drawal. Merit Point Awards Awards are presented on the district and state levels in the junior and senior merit point contests. At each District YAD, the Home Office presents first through third place awards to top qualifying junior and senior youth club members. The top junior and senior youth club members with the most points in each district will receive awards. In the event of a tie, all who tied for first through third places will receive the award. A youth may only receive the state award once in the respective contest division. State Junior and State Senior awards are presented at State YAD.

A youth with a current SPJST insurance certificate may enter the youth program the year that he/she will be entering kinder garten. To be considered active, youth club member must attend a majority (seven) of the monthly meetings at his/her home youth club during the year; however, youth may attend a maximum of two adult lodge meetings; or another lodge’s youth club meeting if either their youth club is not meeting or they need to make up meetings. In those instances where a lodge does not have a youth club, the youth may attend adult lodge meetings or the meetings of another youth club. Active youth members must be single and not be pregnant or a parent.The SPJST youth year begins Sep tember 1 and ends August 31. Youth club eligibility ends when the youth graduates from high school. Reverend Bohumir (Gottfried) Men zel visited Texas in 1840 with a group of German and Czech settlers. He set tled in the New Braunfels, Fredericks burg, Castroville, and D’Hannis areas where he taught school, was a natural scientist, and a Catholic priest. Menzel’s pioneering impact nurtured the settle ment of Texas by the Czechs and Ger mans. He returned home to northern Bohemia in 1856. Dr. Lukáš Perutka from Rožnov pod Radhoštěm, Czech Republic, will pres ent the story of Menzel’s travels to Texas and return home where he fin ished his life’s work and was recognized for his many endeavors by Franz Jo seph, I. Moravian Glory is the story of one Czech woman’s life told in the metaphor of four seasons. State of Texas Kolache Bake Show Sept. 10 in Caldwell Kolache, the original Czech wedding pastry, is a favorite national dessert throughout Czech Republic. The art of baking kolaches came with the early im migrants to Burleson County. Bakers have competed for 36 years to win the coveted title of Grand Champion Ko lache Baker of Burleson County. Over the years, the bake show has grown to six divisions. It is open to adult and youth nonprofessional professional and champion bakers. Kolaches and Czech Music With the doors opening at 10:30 a.m., the festival kicks off with complimen tary coffee and a variety of kolaches for sale. You can’t beat that to start off the day! And, you can complement that with great polkas, waltzes, etc. as the Czecha holics’ band begins also at 10:30 a.m. al ternating with The Red Ravens Band throughout the day from 10:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. The bands will be playing lots of great music for your dancing or just listening entertainment. Admission is $10 per person with youth under 15 years of age always admitted free of charge. Lots of Activities To whet your appetite, there will be plenty of different draft beers available. Of course, the Czech stew and sausage noon meal is available from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. for $12; kolaches throughout the day; and homemade chicken noodle soup and sausage wraps in the after noon. But also come to see the Czech booths and exhibits, arts and crafts, country store, KJT pastry wheel, silent auction, face painting for the young-atheart, and the kolache eating contest.

This year at the festival, the Victoria County Czech Heritage Society is hon oring Marjorie (Mican) Matula and rec ognizing its “Charter Members” who started this society. This honor is being sponsored by Texas Polka News. Marjo rie was the driving force behind the or ganizing of Victoria County Czech Heritage Society in 1984. She worked diligently and with untiring effort to or ganize the Society, later serving as pres ident, and eventually serving as president of the Czech Heritage Society of Texas. For decades she was a true leader and inspiration to all as she worked to preserve and promote Czech heritage resulting in the successes of our Society today. Joe is a Victoria County Czech Society charter member and initiated the first Texas State Tarok Tournament in 1984 which had a tourney for the following 30 years.
After two years of cancellations due to Covid, the Victoria County Czech Heritage Festival will be held on Sun day, September 25, 2022, in Victoria, Texas. Sponsored by the Victoria County Czech Heritage Society, the Fes tival is returning for its 34th year.
