SPJST will issue a new Lodge Opera tions Manual in 2023. The draft document is posted online through year-end for lodge members – and in particular, lodge leaders – to review and make suggestions on ways to improve the manual. “Every one is invited to participate in the eval uation process which continues through December 31, 2022,” says SPJST Pres ident/CEO Brian Vanicek. “The manual covers a lot of ground; however, it re mains a work in progress and your input is requested and appreciated!”
“The primary objective of the new SPJST Lodge Operations Manual is to equip SPJST lodge officers, sales repre sentatives and active members with the guidance necessary to being effective SPJST leaders.”
It is through service to others and fra ternal outreach in its many forms that SPJST conveys a sense of purpose and tradition. All of these elements come to gether in the SPJST Mission Statement:

The SPJST Vision Statement expands on that mission:
Our vision is to provide financial security for our members; build a wholesome family environment; and encourage cherished Czech traditions.

SPJST, CSA Share Center Stage
SPJST President and CEO Brian Vanicek, left, shares the podium with CSA Fraternal Life President John Kielczewski in the SPJST Lodge 19, Ve lehrad Lodge Hall, located on the campus of the Texas Czech Heritage and Cultural Center (TCHCC) in La Grange, Texas. Brother Kielczewski was one of the special guests in attendance for the SPJST’s 125th Anniversary celebration at the TCHCC. Based in Lombard, Illinois, CSA Fraternal Life was formerly known as the Cesko-Slovensky Podporujici Spolek (Czech-Slovak Protective Society) C.S.P.S. which was the forerunner of the SPJST. The SPJST Lodge 19, Velehrad Lodge Hall was originally a C.S.P.S. lodge hall. “It was great having Brother Kielczewski join in the celebration,” says President Vanicek, “The C.S.P.S. in 1859 laid the groundwork for modern fraternal societies and served as a model for numerous other fraternal organizations organized in America in later years.”
It’s Your Life
Lord, Give Me Patience . . . and Do It Now
With my Christian Business Fellow ship Association, we have a focus of the month. We take a Bible verse and help business owners and individuals to use it as a guide. With this crazy world we live in and all the struggles many people are dealing with, I thought through the holi day season, I would present some of these focuses to help ease some of the stress. I want to thank Patrick Howard for his diligent work in creating these fo cuses. Without further ado, here is the first one. Enjoy!
Why am I impatient?
I catch myself praying this way some times. I should be embarrassed at how these prayers slip past my lips with great ease . . . without a second thought . . . without hesitation. It reminds me of a child in the grocery store demanding a toy from his parent. So far, at least I haven’t dropped to the floor and thrown a tantrum.
It is a little hypocritical that I frequently talk about how we should not worry about anything, but rather trust that God will timely fulfill our needs, ac cording to his perfect plan. So many times, I have seen His faithfulness in my life. Why then do I come to Him in prayer like he has no clue what I’m cur rently going through? Why don’t I just come to Him with the expectation that His plan is perfect, and merely ask for patience to see the storm through to its conclusion?
I think we are all guilty (to some de gree) of doing this. Many times, we ap proach our prayers like we would when writing a letter to Santa. You know what I mean, “Hey, Santa! I want a bicycle and a PlayStation and a puppy and a . . . ”
I wonder sometimes if this is how God hears MY prayers . . . “Hey, God! I need money to cover my mortgage this
month, and my car repair is going to be really expensive so I need you to give me some money for a down payment on a new truck and while you’re at it, this COVID-19 thing is really making me angry . . . okay. You know the word I wanted to use, so how about you get rid of this thing so I can go back to my cozy life that I created before all this started.”
Why do I . . .
Why do WE come from this place of doubt and scarcity in our prayers, instead of the confident assurance that God has this handled? After all, our problems are nothing new.
Think about it. Our lives were dis rupted for a few months. The Jews wan dered the desert for 40 years. The NASCAR season was interrupted last year. The only things the Jews could race were camels and scorpions. We couldn’t get into our favorite Tex-Mex restaurant, and we had to settle for our second favor ite. The Jews ate manna for 40 years. We don’t like it when the water of life gets a little choppy. Moses had to part the Red Sea for the Jews to safely begin their journey.
Do you get the point?
God brought the Jews safely through their 40-year journey, and He will bring us through ours, too.
Our focus this month is Psalm 46:10 ~ Be still and know that I am God.
Just as it was in the time of Kings Sol omon and David, all of Psalms is rel evant to our lives today, but I particularly like this verse to help us through the rough waters we currently navigate.
As I was writing the focus, I read this chapter several times. Each time, I was more convinced that God was speaking to me about our current world troubles. This Psalm talks about times of trouble –earthquakes, mountains toppling into the sea, tsunamis, raging nations, kingdoms crumbling, earth melting, total devasta tion.
But then it tells us, because our creator can and will deliver us from our earthly
perils, we should not worry, saying, “Be still and know that I am God.” It’s as though He is saying, “Don’t worry. I am God and nothing is too large for me to handle. I created everything, and I con trol everything.”
Maybe we should change how we pray. No doubt we are in a season of global disease and civil distress. I have heard and said countless prayers asking for God’s deliverance from the perils we currently face. When you think about it, though, it is much like the kid demanding the toy from our example earlier. We are telling God what we need, but he already knows what we need.
There is a hint about how we should pray in the second part of this verse. The entire verse reads, “Be still and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations; I will be exalted over the earth.”
Reading this made me think that we should pray differently about our current situation. Rather than asking God to de
liver us from the COVID pandemic, from the civil unrest and the bitterness that plagues our nation and world, why don’t we thank God for these things and ask Him to use them and use us to exalt and glorify His name. Why don’t we ap proach our prayers with the expectation that God has a perfect plan for us? He can and will handle everything according to His plan, quit worrying and only praise Him. Know that He sits on the throne, and nothing will harm His children.

Lodge 92, Fort Worth Ladies Circle reports on October meeting
It was a wonderful fall day to hold the October meeting of the Lodge 92, Fort Worth Ladies Circle. All 30 attend ing seemed to be in a “party” mood, full of chatter and a lot of laughter.
President Cathy Simmank opened the meeting by leading everyone in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance and welcoming Maria Nuncio’s granddaughter Madi son. Due to Janet Basham’s absence, Lee Williams read a couple of cute stories/poems. One was entitled “When I’m Old and Live with My Kids” and the other was a “Prayer for Aging Gracefully.” They were certainly appro priate since all of us are pretty much seniors now.
Business proceeded as usual with re ports. Sunshine chair Margaret Lay mance reported on Janet Basham’s condition. She is dealing with several health issues that have now been identi fied.
President Cathy reported on the Ladies Circle cake walk held at the Czech Heritage Day activities in Sep tember. Forty-three cakes were donated which was awesome. Those who came
to help had a blast and really enjoyed the day. They reported they are ready for next year already!
We then had a pumpkin decorating contest. Oh my, there were a couple of pumpkins that were stunning, and a great deal of effort and time went into those entries. First place went to Nancy Davis; second place went to Lee Wil liams; and third place to Bessie Ells worth. All were unique and so very cute. One person who did not have time to decorate a pumpkin just bought a greet ing card with a big pumpkin on it. How original was that!
In November, we will hold an arts and crafts sale and election of officers. If anyone is interested in selling their products, please bring them and/or be prepared to shop. Another announce ment made was that we will have our annual Christmas lunch in December. Jon Durham will be the caterer, and his offerings are always delicious. At this point, desserts will be provided by the membership.
Jon Durham also reported on the Czech Day activities from last month. Attendance was up, and it seems a good time was had by all. He also announced that the leadership of the lodge is con tinuing to upgrade the facilities. It al ways looks so nice and clean, and our thanks go to them for allowing us the

Honoring the Life of a Missing Pet
or her to pass away peacefully at home provides the comfort of being able to lay the animal to rest—what’s more is that you were able to say goodbye. However, with a missing pet, the question remains: How does one approach a memorial?
Prior to any memorial planning, I strongly urge contacting local animal shelters to determine if they brought in any animals that match the description of your pet. Do not immediately turn into a fatalist, as there is a very real potential for your pet to be alive and well. If you do come to the conclusion that your missing pet is not returning, there are some beau tiful ways to memorialize him or her.
I want to impress upon pet owners that a memorial, while sad, should be about celebrating the life of the pet. Do not feel embarrassed to conduct a service for a missing pet, because a loss is painful re gardless of the circumstances. Think about the way you believe to be the most appropriate method of memorializing your pet. It is all a matter of personal preference.

by Sabrina N. Young, CFSP SPJST Lodge 47, Seaton Member and Owner of Young’s Daughters Funeral Home and Bereavement CenterThough the passing of a pet can be dif ficult, it is no less painful to cope with a pet that has gone missing. Having a lost pet can be an agonizing process, often times involving months of waiting, searching, and posting dozens of fliers. However, when it is finally realized that your beloved animal is nowhere to be found, a new set of issues comes into play. Euthanizing a pet or allowing him
Throughout my years as a funeral di rector and as a pet owner, I have seen people remember their pet through a va riety of services, memorials, and remem brance ceremonies. There are some wonderful options to consider that will truly allow you to capture the essence of your beloved pet.
Planting
I think one of the most beautiful ways to memorialize a pet is to plant a flower or tree. This is something that will grow and bloom as a constant reminder of your pet. Planting something contributes to the environment and honors your pet’s place in nature. You could even place a small stone or plaque with your pet’s name on it in front of the plant.
Lodge 246, Morgan’s Point joined hands to assist fellow SPJST members (Faye Hudson and Debbie Veselka of Lodge 24, Cyclone) with a project at First Baptist Church in Robinson. Cindy and Ricki Dixon of Lodge 246, Morgan’s Point volunteered to fill 10 boxes for Samaritan’s Purse Operation Christmas Child. The couple included coloring books, stuffed animals, and various other items in the boxes. Thanks to Ricki, Cindy, Faye, and Debbie for making a difference!
Portrait
Look through your scrapbooks and picture albums to find photos of your pet. Select the one that you believe best rep resents him or her. It may be a photo graph of your pet splashing through a lake or rolling over for a belly rub. Then, contact a local artist to paint a portrait of that photo and display it somewhere in your home where every visitor can see.
Special Area
Maybe your pet’s bed was placed in the corner of the living room. Maybe you still have tags, toys, or collars that be longed to your pet. No matter what re mains of your missing pet, you can
designate an area that will still be his or hers. Place personal items or pictures in that special area to commemorate your pet’s life and personality.
The Impact Loss Has on Other Pets
If you have other pets, they may show signs of distress if they maintained a close bond with the pet that is missing. The surviving pet may forego eating and drinking, show lack of energy, and be come completely sedentary. It is impor tant to carefully watch for signs of depression in your other pets. You need to act positive around these animals and give them added attention to help them cope with the loss. If the behavior per sists, see a veterinarian for other means or methods to help your remaining pets deal with the loss of their friend.

My Queen Brooke Bacak and I were at the first-ever Cars & Guitars car show and music festival at Camp Kubena. There were so many cool cars and good food, it was hard to pick a favorite! My favorite part was showing my dad around Camp Kubena, and I can’t wait to be back there next summer!

Lodge 47, Seaton youth wins first place in Christmas ornament contest
Dear Vestnik Readers,
Halloween was a blast! I got like 200 pieces of candy. Well, almost! I got to see my friend. He came to my house to trick-or-treat. My brother is friends with his brother.
The trunk-or-treat at SPJST was suc cessful. It was super fun. I invited one of my soccer team members. He won some of the cake walk items. It was super fun with him. During the Christ mas ornament contest, I won first place with my snowman ornament. I wanted to hang it up on my Christmas tree, but I can’t. It has to go to the Home Office and hang on its tree.
I lost my last soccer game. It’s okay though; my team won third place.
School is going good. I got all E’s for
behavior. I never got one S or one N or one U. My teacher is very nice. I get to go to GATE. My school is a STEM school.
Yesterday, I got my Christmas dec orations out of the attic and set up our trees.
I got to play with my friend today. We were throwing balls over the fence and catching them. Unfortunately, a lot of the balls went into other people’s yards. It was super duper fun. I am super strong. I have a dog sitting on me right now. She’s looking at something. I think she’s looking at my backpack.
Today, we have to go to the board meeting. I think it’s called a board meet ing because it’s super boring. My mom makes me go.
Sunday, November 6 was our last on line youth meeting. Everyone was there, I think. I can’t wait to get SPJST points for being there.
See you later, alligator. Afterwhile, crocodile. See you at the next meeting.

Lodge 47, Seaton youth ready for Thanksgiving, Christmas
Dear Vestnik Readers
Last night was Halloween. I got so much candy that I am good on candy until next Halloween! Coming up, it will be Thanksgiving. Thanksgiving is a good holiday because you get to eat as much as you want until you are ab solutely stuffed. After Thanksgiving, it will be Christmas. Christmas is my
favorite holiday. School is going well. We recently had our fall fun day at the SPJST Seaton Star Hall. It went very well. I enjoyed playing the spin ning wheel and the cake walk game. The food was delicious there, too. Our trunk- or-treat won first place because of our cute puppy and a jumping spider.
I cannot wait till standard time so it will not be dark in the mornings. Have an excellent November!

She graduated from the University of Texas at San Antonio with a major in political science paired with a minor in English. Samantha dedicated her life to serving others. She began actively serv ing her community in college when she became an intern at the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, as well as the pres ident of For the Kids, a foundation that directly supports children at University Hospital in San Antonio. After gradu ating college, she took a job at the Alzheimer’s Association where she worked as a development assistant for two years. Samantha was a proud fem inist, a passionate supporter of both the Alzheimer’s Association and the Na tional Multiple Sclerosis Society, and she was a strong advocate of equal rights for all.
Among her family and friends, she had a reputation for being smart, sassy, and at times, outspoken. It’s safe to say that Sam’s upfront shy demeanor quickly faded once you got to know her, but the love and support she gave to family and friends was constant. Throughout her journey this past year, Samantha had proven that love and friendship are what truly matter in this world. For those of us left on Earth, we feel sadness. We are going to miss our
dear daughter, sister, family member, girlfriend, and friend. But Samantha wouldn’t want anyone feeling sad. She would want us to remember all of the memories we’ve made with her. For her closest friends, Samantha wrote a book full of her favorite quotes. Quote No. 399 in The Final Installment of Sam’s Words of Wisdom states, “Don’t be afraid of death, be afraid of an unlived life. You don’t have to live forever; you just have to live.”
Samantha was a member of SPJST Lodge 23, Moravia.

How to remember those who passed on Thanksgiving
Can I still celebrate without a loved one during a holiday?
by Sabrina N. Young, CFSP SPJST Lodge 47, Seaton Member and Owner of Young’s Daughters Funeral Home and Bereavement CenterHolidays can be the hardest times for families that have lost their loved ones.
While these times can be difficult to deal with, we can still remember them. These are some ways we can remember a loved one during the holidays.
Making their Favorite Dish
We all remember their favorite foods during Thanksgiving. Maybe it was Grandma’s delectably juicy turkey or Mom’s delicious homemade pumpkin cheesecake. Still we can make and eat these dishes in remembrance of them.
Set Up a Memorial in Honor of Them
There are many ways to remember a loved one during Thanksgiving. Setting
Scenes from
SPJST
up a memorial is a common way to ex press remembrance. You can light a can dle and set up a couple of your favorite photos of your loved ones around it. You can add anything you want to the memo rial as well, such as a plate of their favor ite dish, their favorite hat or shirt that they always wore, or a few of their favorite flowers.
Talk it Out
During the holidays, we can still talk about and remember our loved ones. Whether it’s while you’re cooking or set ting up the dinner table, you can tell stories of their life. Laughing with your
family members of your loved ones’ lives is a healthy way to express your grief and mixed emotions.
These are all ways to create new memories and help everyone through the grief process. While they can be difficult times to deal with, we can all get through it together.

Czech organization hosts project in celebration of November 17
Dear Compatriots, I would like to address you on behalf of the Czech non-profit organization Díky, že můžem (Thanks that we can),
based in the heart of Prague, whose aim is to nurture civic awareness and to show that the values of the Velvet Rev olution are not a given and that it is nec essary to put sufficient diligence and heart into maintaining them.
This is the ninth year we have brought the November 17 celebration of freedom and democracy to Národní třída, where the events of November 1989 began. For one festive day, the street where history itself took place will be enveloped in the mantle of a bygone era through a cultural and educational program. Korzo Narodni is a unique street festival that commemorates the crucial historical events of November 17, 1989, in a playful cultural manner, in a positive atmosphere with an empha sis on healthy national pride and with reference to contemporary social issues. I would be very grateful if you would share our “online candle” project with your network of Czech compatriots.
Lodge 25, Ennis members visit Texas Polka Music Museum Schulenburg, Texas
What is an online candle?
Traditionally, visitors to the celebra tion have the opportunity to light a can dle at the November 17 Memorial Plaque to honor the values of this festive day. We would like to make this oppor tunity available to people who cannot
come to Prague to Národní třída in per son. This applies mostly to Czechs who live abroad, but would still like to sup port the celebrations and our national day in general and light their personal flame of freedom and democracy.
books available for purchase. Visits to the gift shop may also be arranged prior to December by calling 512-9714284. We introduce the following five ornaments this week for your consid eration.
How does it work?
For a voluntary contribution on the darujme.cz portal, we put a personal message on a candle, light a flame of freedom, and place a candle on the me morial plaque on November 17 on Ná rodní třída. People can watch the live
broadcast all day on our website and so cial networks. See the photo on page 37 of a previous year’s November 17 cele bration.
Jarmila for the whole team of Thanks that we can —SPJST—
Texas Czech Genealogical Society (TCGS) has, for a number of years, en joyed helping our members and friends with their Christmas shopping by offer ing an assortment of ornaments that ref erence a legend, a symbol, or a tradition. The story cards are included with each order.
Orders for ornaments may be placed for shipment by contacting Nancy Machu at nbmachu@gmail.com or by calling 512-971-4284. Please leave a short message for a return call. Shipping charges, based on the number of orna ments ordered, will be added to the order. We accept cash, checks, or credit cards including Visa, MasterCard, Dis cover, and American Express.
From December 5 to 9 and 12 to 16, our gift shop will be open daily, Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. We invite you to visit us then to shop for many Czech-themed gifts, including books, toys, jewelry, Czech candle holders, corn husk figures, hand painted Czech eggs, Czech glass, and textiles. We also have the TCGS published
The Symbol of the Burgundy Rose
No. OR-220 - $19
A burgundy rose sym bolizes purity and loveliness and can convey commitment and passion even more significantly than a red rose. Presenting a friend or loved one with a preserved red rose can symbolize your wish to pre serve the love and friendship that you share. Adorned with iridescent glitter ac cents and dazzling green leaves, this stunning CHRISTmas flower is artfully crafted of glass in the Czech Republic and measures approximately 3¼” tall.
The Symbol of the Cross No. OR-221 - $15
This beautiful silver infinity cross symbol izes faith and the ever lasting love of God and the promise of eternal life in Jesus Christ. This gift of eternal life was given to Christians when Jesus Christ was cru cified on the cross for our sins, and arose from the dead. Because of the pain and
humiliation that He suffered, this hum bling symbol helps us to be mindful of our beliefs and duties as Christians. Shimmering with a shiny silver surface and glittering accents of white and gold, this unique double sided ornament is a meaningful expression of religious faith.
The Symbol of the
Cow No. OR-223 - $19
Regarded in some cultures as a sym bol of status and bartered as cur rency, cows have been invaluable to humans over the years. Its production of milk also makes the cow a symbol of gentle nourishment, motherhood, and prosperity. Cows have come to represent our connection to the land and are a sign of the bounty with which we are pro vided.
The Symbol of the Hummingbird No. CW-821- $15
The hummingbird symbolizes love, joy, wonder, and beauty. Hummingbirds are fascinating creatures which have been around since ancient times. Looking at a hummingbird from one direction may show its throat to be red, blue or green. From another angle, it may be cold black. Their color de
pends on how light filters through their feathers and is only partly caused by pigmentation. Hummingbirds spend their breeding season in the United States after which they fly to Central and South America. A hummingbird weighs about the same as a nickel, yet it flies over 500 miles, nonstop, to cross the Gulf of Mexico. They can do things no other birds can. Their wings beat ap proximately 80 times per second, and their extra flexible joints enable them to go from full speed to a full stop in the blink of an eye and to fly backwards. This unique ability teaches us that we can look back at our past without dwell ing on it as we move forward. As the hummingbird hovers to drink nectar, we are reminded to savor each moment in life.
The Holy
Family
No. CW-1321 - $11
With its interesting shape and serene nativ ity image, this unique Holy Family glass orna ment is sure to be treas ured for many blessed CHRISTmas seasons to come. The colorful de piction within the orna ment shows Joseph, Mary, and a peacefully sleeping Jesus under the beaming light of the Bethle hem star.
