Filipinos cheer Pacquiao’s comeback win F

ILIPINOS IN cinemas, bars, restaurants and basketball courts erupted into jubilation as they watched boxing icon Manny Pacquiao score a unanimous decision over Jessie Vargas to win the WBO welterweight title in Las Vegas. The 37-year-old senator put on a dazzling display in his return to the ring after a brief retirement, even fighting with more intensity and energy, and dominating the 27-year-old American in the final rounds to close out an emphatic victory. Malacañang led the nation in sending a congratulatory message to Pacquiao, though it did not say if President Duterte, Pacquiao’s political ally, watched the fight. Courage and grit But Malacañang did say “the courage and grit displayed by our Filipino boxers in Las Vegas are the same qualities we must demonstrate as a nation to rid society of drugs, criminality and corruption.” “Once again, Manny’s triumph united and brought joy to our people and our nation,” Presidential Communications Secretary Martin Andanar said. “The discipline, the determination, and the hard work of our People’s Champ are truly what make him a National Treasure in Global Sports,” he said. Standstill During Pacquiao’s fight, some streets in the country were deserted as his legions of fans packed into cinemas, bars, restaurants and basketball courts to watch on big screens, bring-

ing the country to a virtual standstill. Troops in military bases also watched how Pacquiao, a Philippine Army reservist, beat the much younger Vargas. “Army Lt. Col. Manny Pacquiao of the Reserve Force has truly been a source of inspiration, not only to our troops, but also to our organization [that] aspires to be a world-class Army by 2028,” said Col. Benjamin Hao, Philippine Army spokesperson. Praise from Senate It was Pacquiao’s first fight since winning a seat in the Senate in May. He previously served as congressman and is widely regarded as the world’s best poundfor-pound fighter. Pacquiao’s colleagues in the Senate praised him for his vic-

tory. Senate President Aquilino Pimentel III congratulated Pacquiao for a “good job,” which he said was the “product of discipline, hard work and skills.” Sen. Sonny Angara said it was “indeed a victory for the Filipino people, which we should all cherish and celebrate.” Sen. Nancy Binay thanked Pacquiao for the honor and praise that the country had reaped from his victories. ‘Senator World Champ’ The AFP called Pacquiao “Senator World Champ,” adding that the military “shares the jubilation of the Filipinos here and around the world for this yet another great feat in world sports history.” The PNP said it was “one with the Filipino nation in congratulating Pacquiao for winning an-

other world boxing title.” PNP Director General Ronald dela Rosa traveled to Las Vegas to watch the fight. The National Capital Region Police Office called Pacquiao’s win “a victory for peace,” saying no crime was recorded in Metro Manila during the live airing of the fight on national television. Happy fans Some fans who had thought Pacquiao’s retirement to concentrate on legislative work had dulled his fighting skills erupted in cheers when the decision was announced. “I thought he’d lose [because there was no knockout]. The judges had to give a decision,” said Virginia Sison. “But when they announced Pacquiao’s the winner, I was elated.” (with full news from material earlier published from Inquirer)

Duterte’s Malaysia visit brings progress... and karaoke

P

HILIPPINE PRESIDENT Rodrigo Duterte recent visit to Malaysia meant he wasn’t impartial to letting his hair down with a little karaoke – his track of choice: Bette Midler’s Wind Beneath My Wings.

Duterte showed off his lyrical talents in Malaysia with the country’s Prime Minister Najib Razak during a state dinner on 10 November. The evening comprised part of Duterte’s two-daylong itinerary in Malaysia. In a presentation of their united musical front Duterte and Najib also sang a duet together: 1970s chart topper Sha-La-La-La-La by Danish rock band The Walkers. The Associated Press reported Najib danced as he sang. Earlier the Malaysian prime minister performed The Young Ones by Cliff Richards. Duterte may be looking to strike a new conciliatory

tone after making waves in the international community. Following the surprise election of Donald Trump, Duterte appears to have decided to bury the hatchet. Wishing Trump success in his new role, the presidential palace said in a statement: “President Duterte wishes President-elect

tual respect, mutual benefit, and shared commitment to democratic ideals and the rule of law.” Aside from the karaoke, Duterte and Najib have been devoting their time to discussing security arrangements to combat pirating in their territorial waters. Najib told reporters that at their talks, the Philippines had agreed with Indonesia to allow the “hot pursuits” of groups carrying out kidnappings for the purposes of ransom. As the neighbours discussed the measures it emerged militants, believed to be members of the Islamist organisation Abu Sayyaf linked to Islamic State, hijacked a foreign cargo vessel and seized six Vietnamese crew members. DOT enlists support of British media and other partners to help build the UK tourist market

D

epartment of Tourism (DOT) Secretary Wanda Corazon Tulfo-Teo reached out to British and other foreign media present during the Media Address held at the sidelines of the World Travel Market (WTM) 2016, to help intensify interest about the Philippines as a tourism and investment haven. Secretary Teo said, “We are delighted to be here for the biggest ever Philippine participation in the World Travel Market, considered the most influential and must-attend travel fairs in the world. We are serious in courting the British travel trade and business networks to bring more arrivals and related investments to the Philippines. The United Kingdom (UK) remains to be the biggest source of visitors for the country from this region and we intend to increase our share of this huge market which contributed 35.7 million trips to

the total global outbound figure last year.” Tourism Attaché Gerry Paga also proudly presented the DOT-UK achievements and ongoing campaigns with staunch partners who have helped sustain the country’s positive image and competitiveness as a tourism destination. These include Philippine Airlines (PAL) which has been involved in the Station Domination campaigns, PH Tourism Weekend at Potter’s Field and VPA Holidays. It has also committed to support future selling missions and familiarization trips for media and tour operators. PAL is the only airline offering

direct access to Manila from London and the rest of Europe. Similarly, Singapore Airlines which ran the First Stop Singapore, Next Stop Philippines campaign, successfully delivered over 1.2 million impressions with an expected 400-500 total passenger bookings for short term conversion as a result of visiting the platform. Expedia, on the other hand, the largest online travel agent portal worldwide, was able to generate around 18,000 bookings to the Philippines last year.

second year partnering with the DOT, targeting the youth market. Last year, it was able to yield 2,200 visitors from the UK and more than 7,000 from key European and Australian markets. “We thank these marketing partners for helping us position the Philippines as a top-of-mind destination. Again, we could only be as successful with the support of our media friends who continue to help us spread the good news and the compelling reasons to visit our beautiful country among

Visit ASEAN@50 promises grand travel experiences

(L-R) Ms Aileen Clemente (President, ASEANTA), Secretary Wanda Corazon Teo (Department of Tourism, Philippines), Minister Kobkarn Suriyasat Wattanavrangkul (Ministry of Tourism and Sports, Thailand), Deputy Permanent Secretary Wardi bin Haji Mohammad Ali (Ministry of Primary Resources and Tourism, Brunei Darussalam and Chairperson of Visit ASEAN@50 Campaign), Minister Dato’ Seri Mohamed Nazri Abdul Aziz (Ministry of Tourism and Culture, Malaysia), Union Minister Ohn Maung (Ministry of Hotel and Tourism, Myanmar), Deputy Minister of International Tourism Marketing I Gde Pitana (Ministry of Tourism, Indonesia) and Deputy Director-General of Tourism AING Sovannroath (Ministry of Tourism, Cambodia).

A

t the press conference on Visit ASEAN@50 held at the sidelines of this year’s World Travel Market (WTM), the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) tourism ministers and officials enjoined media and other participants to experience the region’s best holiday and leisure offerings, particularly next year when the regional bloc celebrates its 50th year. The Visit ASEAN@50: Golden Celebration campaign promotes the ASEAN brand in two intertwining ways: first, as a unique and diverse travel destination; and secondly, as a vibrant organization celebrating its 50th anniversary. “As Chairman, the Philippines will endeavor to present ASEAN as a model of regionalism and also as a global player, bearing in

mind the interest of the people in everything we undertake,” Philippine Department of Tourism (DOT) Secretary Wanda Corazon Tulfo-Teo said. “Our theme, Partnering for Change, Engaging the World captures our resolve to consolidate our community for our peoples with a sense of togetherness and common identity, ready and able to take our rightful place in the global community of nations,” the tourism chief echoed Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte’s earlier statement in September when he accepted the Chairmanship of this highly significant undertaking at the ASEAN meeting in Lao. The campaign highlights the region’s best festivals and 50 most unforgettable travel experiences ranging from destinations, culinary, events, and en-

gagements with local communities. ASEAN envisions to tap into new markets and market segments other than the key visitor-rich cou n tr i es which include intra-ASEAN, US/Canada and selected areas in the Asia

Pacific, European, Middle Eastern regions. In line with the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) Blueprint 2025, the campaign contributes towards the vision of creating a thoroughly integrated and highly cohesive ASEAN community. The Visit ASEAN@50 is one of the activities contained in the ASEAN Tourism Strategic Plan (ATSP) 2016-2025 which was approved by the tourism ministers in Manila during the ASEAN Tourism Forum (ATF) in January this year. Britain’s High Court Rules on Brexit

O

N NOVEMBER 3rd, Britain’s High Court ruled that before the country can leave the European Union, Prime Minister Theresa May must first get approval from Parliament before the process can begin. The Prime Minister had previously said she plans to invoke Article 50, the legal mechanism used for exiting the EU, by the end of March 2017. This new ruling adds another step in the process, and further complicates the Brexit process. The government has appealed the ruling and Britain’s Supreme Court has granted this appeal. The Supreme Court has set aside four days, starting on December 5th, for all eleven Justices to hear the appeal. According to a statement released by the Supreme Court, they will deliver their judgment “probably in the New Year.” Many pro-Brexit politicians and a majority of the public were unhappy with the High Court’s decision. British voters chose to leave the EU (“Brexit”) earlier

this year by a margin of 52% to leave and 48% to stay. While the public had voted by a majority on the referendum to leave, many members in Britain’s Parliament wanted Britain to stay in the EU. The idea that Parliament must now be consulted regarding any exit plans is seen as a blow to the Prime Minister. While it seems unlikely for Parliament to go against the will

of the voters by blocking an exit plan, if the ruling stands, Theresa May would be forced to work with Parliament to negotiate a plan. Once Article 50 is triggered, the talks and negotiations will be lengthy and are likely to focus on border

control/EU immigration and Britain’s desire to retain access to the EU’s single market. The businesswoman at the centre of the legal challenge has said the landmark case was motivated by her fear that the UK faced a “treacherous future”. Gina Miller said she knew the ruling would leave her unpopular with many EU referendum voters, but believed that the UK had failed itself and the rest of Europe by voting to leave the bloc rather than reform it from within. “I was never binary remain or leave. I was very much of the sentiment, and still am, that it was about remain, reform and review,” Miller said. “The UK actually has a very powerful place in Europe ... and we have not just let ourselves down but I think the whole of Europe down by not taking up that challenge.” (Splash ‘Pinas original article)

How to save money on energy and get out of debt M ILLIONS OF households are facing energy debt - even before the winter begins. A new study has found that almost 2.5 million households are behind on their energy bills by £120 - a figure likely to rise as fuel bills increase through the expensive winter months. Households collectively owe energy providers £292 million, a poll for uSwitch found, and a fifth of those in debt said they were ignoring the situation. uSwitch energy spokeswoman Claire Osborne said: “Once the cold weather really starts to bite, some consumers will inevitably find themselves in further financial difficulties.” To help customers looking to save money, ‘PINAS have put together a guide on how to switch supplier and other ways to save money.

How to switch energy suppliers It can often pay to shop around by comparing and switching supplier or energy tariff. something that is very easy to do. Savvy consumers can save as much as £300 a year, according to Ofgem. - There is no one cheap supplier. Finding the cheapest energy deal depends very much on your area and your usage. - Gas and electric suppliers frequently change their prices so it’s worth regularly comparing what’s on offer. - Switching websites will help you search out the best deal. uSwitch offer a simple comparison guide, while Ofgem has a list of switching sites. In both cases, you simply search using your postcode, giving some information about your gas and electricity usage. It helps to have a recent bill to hand. - Free switching services will contact your old and new supplier on your behalf, and agree a switching date. - Your existing supplier will continue to provide your energy until the day of the switch.

If you change your mind, you have 14 working days (from the date you signed the contract with your new supplier) to cancel without incurring any charge. - Fixed-price deals may not appear the cheapest as first as they have slightly higher premiums, but they lock the price for up to three years, so could the best option in the long-term. If you are tied to a contract, you may have to pay an exit fee if you switch suppliers. How to get out of energy debt There’s no need to ignore the problem, help is out there for you if you have run up energy debts. - The first thing you should do if you are struggling to pay your bills is call your energy supplier, say uSwitch, regardless of whether you are looking to switch or not. - Your supplier must give you clear guidance on what you how and can set up a repayment plan to help you pay it back in manageable amounts. - If you’re facing being disconnected, your supplier may suggest a prepayment meter allows you to pay off your energy debt at the same time as you pay for the gas and electricity you use. - Find out whether you’re enti-

tled to social energy tariffs that offer discounted energy bills to customers who are elderly, live in fuel poverty, are on benefits

or have a very low income. (with full attribution from material published from Sky)

DOT positions PHL as diving hub in new book

ondon—Tourism Secretary Wanda Tulfo-Teo presented the first ever coffee table book on Tubbataha Reefs, at the sidelines of this year’s World Travel Market (WTM). “This book encapsulates the depth and breadth of our magnificent and rich marine heritage, and strongly amplifies our country’s proud position as the center of marine biodiversity. More than enticing global divers to enjoy this God-given gift, this book will drive forward our advocacy on environmental conservation and protection.” Secretary Teo said at the ExCel Convention Centre in London on 08 November 2016.

The Tubbataha Reefs Natural Park was established in 1988 by then Philippine President Corazon Aquino. It exists as a wonderful testimony of biodiversity being home to 600 species of fish, 360 species of corals (half of all the coral species in the world), 21 species of sharks, skates and rays, 13 species of dolphins and whales, and two of seven species of marine turtles, namely the hawkbill and green. It is also an important source of livelihood and is a revenue generator being a leading dive tourism site. The Tubbataha: A National Treasure coffee table book is

According to her, the Department of Tourism (DOT) is doubling its efforts to position the Philippines as a sports tourism hub, banking on the country’s growing niche markets such as diving and marine sports. While latest data from DOT show that the Philippine diving industry only makes up 1.7 percent market share of the 7.3 million active divers worldwide, country draws a strong following from diving enthusiasts and environment advocates for possessing 97,030 hectares of waters and reefs comprising Southeast Asia’s only purely marine UNESCO World Heritage Site. The country is also proud for it being declared an ASEAN Heritage Site and a Flyway Network Site.

Department of Tourism (DOT) Secretary Wanda Corazon Tulfo-Teo, together with the delegation to the World Travel Mart (WTM) 2016, paid a special visit to see one of the many consumer marketing activities staged by the DOT overseas office in the

United Kingdom (UK). “The United Kingdom remains our eighth top market, contributing 117,500 thousand visitors from January to August this year, registering a 13.5 percent growth. With more activities like this done to reach our target segments, we are optimistic to grow the numbers and move closer to our goal of six million arrivals this year,” Secretary Teo enthused. “I am honored that our legislators, led by Senator Nancy Binay, Congresswoman Lucy TorresGomez and Congressman Roger Mercardo, are able to witness how the DOT pursues its marketing activities. Along with the WTM exposure, we remain positive of the legisla-

boarding or sky cycling selfie photos taken at the zone. The top destinations can also be enjoyed in 360-degree views. The fun experience grows as more exciting prizes await the lucky consumers. The project is part of the Station Domination Series which started in Waterloo in April this year where it was able to reach 8.4 million commuters and 1.2 million Facebook users. The project later moved to the King’s Cross Station and finally back to Waterloo. Waterloo is one of UK’s busiest railway station with almost 100 million passenger entries and exits recorded in 2015. It is also the 15th busiest passenger terminal in Europe and the 91st busiest railway station in the world. Given this high traffic, the Philippines hopes to gain wider exposure and greater impact.

Philippines’ total cargo throughput up by 9% in January-September period

P

HILIPPINE exports posted the highest growth percentage in cargo volume, pulling up the country’s total cargo throughput higher by 9 percent in the first nine months to September, the Philippine Ports Authority (PPA) said. PPA said the throughput reached 183.730 million metric tons (mmt) as compared to the 168.074 mmt registered in the same period last year. Foreign volume posted a 12.72 percent rise in traffic anchored on the 15 percent increase in export volume from 47.945 mmt in 2015 to 55.134 mmt for the period in review. Similarly, import volume also posted a doubledigit hike of 10.75 percent from 55.490 mmt to 61.459 mmt for the January to September period. “This is a great indication that Philippine exporters are gearing up to compete in the international market and would not be left out in the run-up to Christmas,” PPA General Manager Jay Daniel Santiago explained. “Likewise, the double-digit growth in the import volume suggests that imported Christmas cargoes have also started to come in,” Santiago said. “However, even with the strong performance of both sectors, our ports remain to operate under optimum condition and we do not expect any slowdown in the movement at any given time,” he added.

Domestic volume, meanwhile, posted a modest growth of 3.87 percent to 67.139 mmt from 64.638 mmt last year. The increases in cargo volume were observed at the ports of Agusan, Mindoro, Bicol, Western Leyte/Biliran and Negros Oriental/Siquijor. The North Port remains as the top performer in terms of domestic cargo volume with a share of 17.87 mmt or 24.8 percent of the total domestic volume and 9.73 percent of the total cargo throughput nationwide followed by Cagayan de Oro, Davao and Zamboanga. Container traffic, on the other hand, registered a 9.36 percent increase in volume for the period in review with 4.684 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) compared to the 4.283 million TEUs processed in the same period last year.
