INSIDE OUR y UNIVERSE x a l a by G Welcome to a very special issue of SPO!LER magazine where we celebrate the winners of our very first SPO!LER TV & Movie Awards! Over the past month, we’ve received tens of thousands of votes and we’re excited now to unveil to you the shows, movies, and celebrities you’ve all deemed as the best of the year! Our January issue will feature the actual SPO!LER Award, which is in the shape of a soft drink cup and straw, signifying each winner’s ability to quench our thirst for quality entertainment. We will be either hand delivering or shipping out one of these babies to every single winner around the globe! We’re also pleased to announce that next year, in December of 2022, we will be hosting the first ever in-person awards show for all you lovely fans to attend right here in Hollywood! We’re planning an immersive experience unlike anything you’ve ever seen before. We also expect to include more categories in the future as well, with more opportunities for you, the fans, to choose your champions to win, ultimately making this one of the most exciting and anticipatory events each year. The SPO!LER Awards is not your typical awards show–it’s fan driven. And since you’ve all been a huge part in making SPO!LER magazine what it is today, we want to give you a voice in picking your favorites in our pop culture universe. Centered in Hollywood, where glitz and glamor is a natural commodity, our show will be responsible for kicking off the awards season from here on out. SPO!LER has become one of the top fandom, multigenre magazines in the country. Our goal is to continue to grow each and every year–this awards show being a big part of that. We have been so flattered by the amount of feedback and enthusiasm we’ve gotten for this inaugural edition–and in such a short amount of time. It makes us even more thrilled about the future of the SPO!LER Awards in years to come. So stay tuned for all the excitement! We can’t wait to share it with you! I wish you all an amazing holiday season and a wonderful New Year. See you in 2022! Love You All,

I 13

BY ETHAN BREHM

WELCOME TO THE 1st ANNUAL SPO!LER TV & MOVIE AWARDS! Growing up, one of my favorite events each year was the Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Awards, where 8- to 13-year-old Me could vote for my favorite shows, movies, and celebrities. Presenters like Kenan Thompson and Kel Mitchell, or Rider Strong and Matthew Lawrence would announce awards for Favorite Musical Group or Favorite TV Show. Before his foray into Oscar-nominated performances, Will Smith accepted the award for Favorite Movie for the 1996 megahit Independence Day, and a few years later, he got covered in green slime on stage! The Kids’ Choice Awards wasn’t just an entertaining event where all my favorite celebrities gathered in one place to throw t-shirts into a crowd of screaming children, but it was a recognition of things that occupied the world I loved, especially during that time in my life. And most importantly, my vote counted; I felt like I had a say in who won. Now that I’m older, I realize the amount of synergy and self-branding that was

going on at the time, but I never get disillusioned about my memories of watching it back then. After all, I loved what I was being fed. These days, my enthusiasm for the Nickelodeon awards show has transferred to the Academy Awards. I watch each film that’s nominated every year, albeit with less of an investment in who wins. After all, I don’t vote—that job is given solely to celebrities and industry folks. Likewise, I’m less passionate about my love for, say, The King’s Speech than I was for my favorite show as a kid: All That (I was a bigtime Nickelodeon kid, if you couldn’t tell). Of course, there are several awards out there that are voted on by fans and viewers (People’s Choice Awards, MTV Video Music Awards), but rarely do the big budget blockbusters and the higher-brow critical darlings get to intersect in the same place on the same stage. With the SPO!LER TV & Movie Awards, that’s our goal. Our experts here watch a LOT of content each year, both good and bad, pretentious

and populist—and our nominees reflect that. This year—our first ever—we’ve brought together mainstream hits like F9 and Cruella with the more cerebral Pig and Last Night in Soho. And yet, we still have categories such as Coolest Movie Universe and Best Plot Twist.

Recognizing the best of the best from this past year, this inaugural edition focuses on what you really want to vote on: entertainment. Whether it’s thoughtprovoking or full of explosions, we got you covered. 2021 is just the beginning. Next year’s awards will get an instant plus-up. Currently planning an in-person show for next December—with celebrities and fans in attendance—we’re in

the process of making 2022’s SPO!LER Awards an event for the ages. Think, “Kids’ Choice Awards for Grown-Ups.” The end goal is to eventually turn this into the biggest pop culture awards show in the world! Curated for fans, by fans, The SPO!LER Awards are your chance to speak up for your own fandoms. Now, rally together if you have to, but just go out there and vote!

there’s no other medium like film. It’s a fixed product where a single story begins and ends in around 2 hours (more or less). Sure, sequels and prequels add to those stories (or detract from them), but the time you dedicate to a single movie’s consumption is, for all intents and purposes, finite. Unlike stage plays, where elements such as perspective and setting are more limited, cinema allows us to get lost in the scope of a world in a way that no other medium is capable of. Unlike a TV show, which is reliant on a timeline of episodes—and whose longevity is determined by a

network—each individual film is locked in place forever; we will always have its concluded plot at the very least. Theoretically, film has no creative limitations. It’s possible to make a movie with a singular vision, unhindered (again, theoretically) by money or the powers-that-be. And because of that, you get an array of offerings each year. While the ones with a bigger marketing campaign will usually garner more eyes on them, it’s very possible for smaller films to get noticed just as well. On a cultural level, movies gauge where we are and where we’ve been. Modern content reflects our present society and, if we look back, older films offer the most accurate depiction of where we came from and what we had to say. Recognizing the best in film from January through October of 2021, we present to you our movie awards...

during the pandemic, television helped millions of people get through the dog days. An important asset in taking up large chunks of time for many, TV shows also teleport us to different realms and universes for days, even weeks, when the world around us might not seem quite as attractive. Thought to be just a novelty upon its commercial introduction in the early 1940s, TV has evolved considerably since then, in terms of quality and how we consume it. From the 40-plus year sitcom heyday

to the static love affair that reached its height in the ‘80s and ‘90s to now, in the binge era, where entire seasons are dropped in a single day, the boob tube’s ubiquity has always been unmatched. Sitting right there in our own living rooms, televisions and the shows that grace their screens are with us day in and day out, and always have been. Now, with more new content than ever before, the never-ending race to consume it all feels like it’s reaching a frantic peak. But still, that’s part of the fun of it all. Whether it’s laugh-track ladened nostalgia or HBOera serials, TV is our comfort food; a friend we can always rely on. Recognizing the best in television from October of 2020 through October of 2021, we present to you our TV awards...
