PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE 2022 FESTIVAL PRESIDENT ALAN HART

O

ur family moved to Spokane in 2015 when I was stationed at Fairchild Air Force Base. We fell in love with Spokane and it became “our city of choice” as our permanent home. Following my retirement from the military I joined the Spokane Lilac Festival Association in the hope of giving back to my adopted home. Though the past two years have been challenging, I am honored to host our great Spokane tradition as we return to the city streets this year. The 2022 Festival theme, “Our Town,” is dedicated to community. The Lilac Festival in 2022 wanted to capture Spokane’s

strong sense of community as we come back together after two years of pandemic separation to enjoy our hometown. Community is the towns and neighborhoods we live in, the schools our kids go to, our places of work and businesses, the churches and civic groups we attend. Community is our friends and our families. “Our Town” includes one-of-a-kind events like the Lilac Festival Armed Forces Torchlight Parade -- now celebrating 84 years, Hoopfest, Bloomsday, and other culturally enriching events. The 2022 theme pin includes images of Spokane, such as the Monroe Street Bridge, the Clocktower and Mt. Spokane. “Our Town” is all of these places and more,

filled with all the diverse people that make up our community. We invite you to join in the celebration of “Our Town” and the many activities offered during Lilac Festival week. Thank you to all the individuals, businesses, organizations, and volunteers for their extraordinary support of time, treasure, and talent that have been the ingredients of our festival’s success over its 84-year history!

He is also a distinguished graduate of the Marine Corps Command and Staff College in Quantico, VA, and a graduate of the Air War College in Montgomery, AL. His final active-duty assignment was as Chief of Staff for the Joint Interagency Task Force South in Key West, FL, where he integrated all functions of a 16 agency, 21 nation task force focused on interdicting illicit narcotics and dismantling transnational criminal

Col(ret) Groves is a command pilot with over 1900 hours in the UH-1N “Huey,” MH53 “Pave Low,” and CV-22 “Osprey” aircraft. He served over 14 years in Special Operations Command (SOCOM) and flew combat missions in Iraq, Kuwait, Djibouti, Pakistan, and Afghanistan. Col(ret) Groves earned a Silver Start Medal in 2004 for his actions in Fallujah, Iraq. Insurgents shot down his flight lead, and despite continued fire from the rocket propelled grenades, Col(ret) Groves’ crew located and rescued the downed crew moments before the insurgents closed in. Col(ret) Groves has ties to Spokane having proudly served as the Commander of the United States Air Force’s renowned Survival, Evasion, Resistance, and Escape (SERE) school at Fairchild Air Force Base from July 2016 through June 2018. During that time, the SERE school trained over 32,000 soldiers, sailors, and airman to survive, conduct themselves in captivity, and return with honor. In retirement, Col(ret) Groves leads an integrated team of scientists, designers, human performance experts, and engineers to revolutionize Air Force aircrew training by replacing live flight training with virtual reality, mixed reality, and adaptive web-based academic training.

W

elcome to Our Town! Whether you have lived in the Spokane area your whole life, just moved here, or are currently visiting, I hope you enjoy this huge, beautiful Lilac City that presents itself as small and personal. From taking pictures of flowers in Manito Park, to visiting with strangers in Kendall Yards, and running in Bloomsday, there is something for every kind of person in Spokane. But it is not just the scenic nature and fun activities for everyone that makes Spokane, Spokane, it is the sense of warmth and belonging this community breathes. Princesses Ryan, Shelby, Velerie, Ella, Megan, Taryn, and I are delighted and honored to serve our community. As we help to take care of this city, we develop a sense of pride and ownership in Spokane. Our hope is that as we serve and welcome you into our town, you would extend the same spirit of belonging by caring for and welcoming others too! Servicemen and women are significant models for belonging because of their extreme sacrifice they make to protect and preserve our town and our country. Thank you, all active and retired members of the military. We host this festival to honor you, and I hope this week you feel the appreciation that is due to you and your family. Here we are with the first spring Lilac parade since before the pandemic. After a time of isolation, our community needs a festival and parade to celebrate new beginnings. And now more than ever, being intentional about expanding belonging

is vital to our town. Each act of welcoming, inviting others into conversation, and compassion for outsiders creates this culture of a beautiful community that Spokane is. We all have a part to extend belonging. So what would it look like for you to create conversation with the person you stand in line with for the carousel or to extend an invitation to a co-worker or a less-familiar neighbor? Thank you to all those who are attending and supporting our parade. By showing up to our lilac festival, you are contributing to a culture of togetherness and belonging here in our town that we have needed to recapture these past few years. Enjoy every moment! Warmly,

QUEEN JANNA

MAYOR’S WELCOME

A

s Mayor of Spokane, I am pleased to extend a warm welcome to all guests and participants in the 84th Lilac Festival. After a two-year hiatus, we are excited to once again join together and celebrate this rich tradition in Spokane. As we celebrate today’s heroes and empower tomorrow’s leaders, we’re showcasing what makes Our Town so special. Whether it is our beautiful parks, historic neighborhoods, spectacular views of the Spokane River, or our award-winning food and culture scene, there is something for everyone in our community.

One of our community’s most treasured tradition is the annual Lilac Festival Armed Forces Torchlight Parade. This is our opportunity to honor our region’s Veterans and active members of the Armed Forces, while also celebrating our talented youth. TEACHER OF THE YEAR

T

he Lilac Festival is committed to the continued education of our Royal Court and celebrates those who helped shape them into the young women they have and will become. Founded in the early 2000 by Festival Director Russ Brown, a longtime educator, the Teacher of the Year program was created to celebrate the teachers going the extra mile to ensure bright futures for their students. Annually, each member of the Royal Court selects a teacher who most influenced them throughout their high school experience. Recipients are presented a plaque and certificate at their school alongside the Festival’s President and are also invited to attend the Queen’s Luncheon during festival week on May 20. GESA Credit Union is the 2022 sponsor of the program. The 2022 Teachers of the Year are: • Tamara Kennedy-Gibbens Mead High School • Karen Round Gonzaga Preparatory School • Kaysha Reinhart University High School • Craig Johnson Medical Lake High School • Mary Pratt Cheney High School • Andy Mattson The Oaks Classical Christian Academy • Emily Torres Ferris High School

The Queen and six Princesses submit an essay that describes the reasons for their nomination. Queen Janna said this of Tamara Kennedy-Gibbens, “Mead High School is all about belonging, and this amazing teacher really embodies this so admirably. She has made students like me feel welcomed and that we belong.” Belonging and support were a common theme in many of this year’s selectees. “This teacher has served as a great role model for me since the first day I met her,” said Princess Ryan of Karen Round. “Beyond academics, I never once had doubts that she cared for me as a student and a person.” Princess Velerie said of her selection Craig Johnson, “This teacher never lets a student leave the room with anything less than they came with. Their kind words and genuine empathy and care for their students never wavers and ensure that students never leave the building unhappy.” In 2022, the selected teachers had the opportunity to ride alongside the Royal Court on a KC – 135 refueling aircraft as guests of 141st Air Refueling Wing at Fairchild Air Force Base. The honorees are invited to ride as a VIP in the Armed Forces Torchlight Parade on Saturday May 21, 7:45 p.m. in downtown Spokane. VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT

F

MIKE MOORE

or over forty years there has been one consistent hand behind every Lilac float design, Mike Moore. Moore began volunteering for the festival in 1972 as a Royal Escort. The escorts built floats and traveled to parades across the Pacific Northwest. However, it wasn’t until 1981 that Moore started building his iconic scale float models after then President Marvin Rubens asked Moore to design a trolley car float. That request became the foundation of a tradition that has remained virtually unbroken to the current year. Just a few years later, Moore again designed a trolley float at the request of the Washington Water Power Company, now Avista. The float models and the philosophy behind their creation is an extension of Moore’s five decades as a kindergarten teacher in the Mead school district. Each design element is a threedimensional rendering of the completed full-scale float, down to every detail including materials and colors. Moore emphasizes the importance of making sure all the elements work together in miniature before scaling up to their full size. Throughout the years, Moore’s floats have delighted spectators and received countless awards from across the region. The 2010, “Freedom Isn’t Free,” float featured a larger than life eagle soaring over stars and stripes, complete with flapping wings and rotating head, and the 1998, “Wonders Down Under” float included a jumping kangaroo with baby joey. Moore has stayed committed to Lilac for many years. Starting as a child going to watch the parade to designing floats, the festival has played a significant role in his life. One of his favorite things to do is drive floats in parades. According to Moore, “You drive at a child’s eye level, you get to see their reaction.” The Spokane Lilac Festival Association is grateful to Moore for lending his talents for over four decades. We hope Moore will continue to drive and design floats that amaze children for many more years to come!

2022 FESTIVAL ARTIST MARYANN FIRORILLO

T

he Spokane Lilac Festival Juried Art Show began back in 2016 and has steadily become a staple event of Lilac week where local artists can submit their best Lilac art. The winning artwork becomes the following year’s official artwork of the Lilac Festival. 2022 Festival Artist, MaryAnn Firorillo has created art in various forms her entire life. She began her art business in 2021 during the Covid quarantine. She became very interested in acrylic paint pour techniques as a supplement to her semiabstract style and interest. MaryAnn’s work attempts to marry traditional acrylic painting with paint pour techniques, tethering the raw energy that comes from random paint splotches with the meaning you create by manipulating it.

21 NONSTOP DESTINATIONS

The winning Lilac Festival competition painting was made with these principles in mind, using very thin acrylic paint and a putty knife. It was then covered in a resin, and mica powder was added to it. MaryAnn wanted to communicate the semblance of lilacs, a loose interpretation. MaryAnn has lived in various towns and cities in the Inland Northwest, and currently resides in Moscow, Idaho. She has had a variety of other jobs over the years besides art, including teaching Piano, face painting, and working as a Landscape Designer. Her favorite job has always been being a mom and wife to three wonderful children and husband. More of her work can be seen and purchased at www. mfiorilloart.com, and on Instagram, @mfiorilloart MaryAnn’s design, titled “Lilac Love” was the winner of the Spokane Lilac Festival Juried Art Show last year. Her work is now part of a growing list of local artists who’s work now adorns note cards and prints that the festival sells at our local events and on-line at www.spokanelilacfestival.org

eaving a legacy of community pride and spirit are part of the reason Sam and Christy Snow are committed to the Spokane Lilac Festival Association. Though they give countless hours of their time and talents, both agree they receive much more in return for all their hard work. They have helped expand the events during Lilac week to include along with the Car Show, a Parade of Venders and a Brewfest. Christy Snow first became associated with the Lilac Festival when she was hired as a part-time office manager. Using her skills and experience in a variety of administrative positions, Christy committed to full involvement in every aspect of the Festival just as she did as a child and as a teenager. She especially enjoys interacting with the directors, and community members. Christy aspires to be an example for her sons and others by contributing and participating in all major events the Spokane area.

President-Elect Sam Snow became involved with the Spokane Lilac Association when Christy asked him to attend an event. Sam was invited to get involved by a former president, and first served on the Hosting Committee because he “likes to plan parties.” Born and raised in Spokane, Sam enjoys connection to community. He delights in the participation of the people he has met since becoming a part of the Lilac family. The joy of the kids at the tea party and parade, the Lilac Queen and princesses on the float and the reactions from parents and grandparents cheering them on create an atmosphere of excitement and anticipation. The delight of participants in the parade - waving, smiling, and marching - is all part of the Lilac Parade experience. The Snows hope to carry on the lilac spirit for generations to come. Individuals interested in becoming a part of the Lilac family are invited to inquire about a volunteer application at www.spokanelilacfestival.org.
