This year’s Lilac Festival is all about community – welcoming families and guests to enjoy an outstanding line-up of activities and events all week long. As we celebrate today’s heroes and empower tomorrow’s leaders, we’re showcasing what makes us so special. Whether it is our beautiful parks, historic neighborhoods, spectacular views of the Spokane River, or our award-winning food and culture scene, there is something for everyone in our community. One of Spokane’s most treasured traditions is the annual Lilac Festival Armed Forces Torchlight Parade. This is our opportunity to honor our region’s Veterans and active members of the Armed Forces, while also celebrating our talented youth.
Enjoy this wonderful parade and week of events and thank you for supporting our community and its traditions.

NADINE WOODWARD MAYOR, CITY OF SPOKANE
Welcome to the 85th Annual Spokane Lilac Festival! I am honored you could join us for the festival and Armed Forces Torchlight Parade. Spokane is such an incredible community to be a part of and this wonderful parade helps highlight our beautiful hometown. The Lilac Festival Association has worked year after year to honor our military, empower our youth and showcase our region, and you being here today helps us continue that mission.
I am a military child myself, so this parade holds a special place in my heart. I was raised on Fairchild AFB and have two wonderful parents who both served 20+ years in the United States Air Force. When crowned Lilac Queen I wanted to work towards really supporting our local military. This is a wonderful opportunity to honor not only our fallen heroes but also all those that are currently still serving our country.
The Lilac Festival is such a wonderful organization that is truly working to make Spokane better every day. These past months have given me so many opportunities to take part in community service and meet new people from all corners of the city. I truly can see how Lilac brings this community together, today really reflects the close-knit community here within Spokane.
I want to say thank you to our sponsors and volunteers. Without you this parade and all of our Lilac festivities would not be possible. I would also like to recognize the 6 lovely girls that are with me today. Princesses Lori, Maddie, Kate, Mercy, Aidyn, and Kaitlyn: I could not ask for a better team and I am blessed to be able to spend this next year with you. I will never forget the friendship we have made, and I am so excited to see where we all end up.
Thank you for supporting the Lilac Festival and attending the 85th Annual Spokane Lilac Festival Armed Forces Torchlight Parade. I hope you have an incredible time and truly see the magic that lies within the streets of Spokane!

Iam honored and very grateful to have my wax and oil abstract-expressionist painting, Graceful in Their Elegance, chosen as The Spokane Lilac Festival’s 2023 image. Though my painting’s immediate subject is the physical beauty and colors of lilacs, I really hope the image leads a viewer into a flowing movement from the literal to the imaginative. I have always believed that the most powerful works of art do this. They take you from their concrete presence to a deeper place. I believe the City of Spokane does this. It’s a large city that exudes interest and excitement, while never losing its small-town soul.
I am originally from La Crosse, Wisconsin which is so much like Spokane, both founded as railroad towns located in the valley of major rivers. They also share the presence of lilacs in every neighborhood. As a child, I have fond memories of my Grandmother’s home where she proudly gardened her pride and joy, her many lilac bushes. Her love for lilacs has always stayed with me, and it is from this place in my heart I was inspired to create “Graceful in Their Elegance.” I really feel the image celebrates my Grandma while doing the same of Spokane.
Again, I am honored and grateful to have my painting chosen to represent The Spokane Lilac Festival, and I very much hope those who see it go away with an inspired feeling of Spokane’s unique interest, excitement, and soulfulness.

2023 JUNIOR COURT
The Spokane Lilac Festival’s annual Royal Tea Party at the Historic Davenport Hotel is a beloved tradition. Held in the Hall of Doges and Grand Pennington Ballroom, guests of all ages can enjoy a high tea, games, crafts, face painting, prizes, and entertainment. Morning and afternoon tea seatings are available to accommodate guests’ schedules.
During the event, a raffle drawing for the Junior Royal Court, ages 4 - 9, takes place. The SLFA welcomed eight new members of the Junior Royal Court on April 30, who were greeted by their Queen or Princess Big Sister and received their official sash and tiara. The Junior Court rode on the Royal Wedge with the “Onward” Royal Court during the Jr. Lilac Parade on May 13. Proceeds from the raffle support SLFA special events.

TEACHER OF THE YEAR
The Lilac Festival is committed to the continued education of our Royal Court and celebrates those who helped shape them into the young women they have and will become. Founded in the early 2000s by Festival Director Russ Brown, a long-time educator, the Teacher of the Year program was created to celebrate the teachers going the extra mile to ensure bright futures for their students.
Annually, each member of the Royal Court selects a teacher who most influenced them throughout their high school experience. Recipients are presented a plaque and certificate at their school alongside the Festival’s President and are also invited to attend the Queen’s Luncheon during festival week on May 19. GESA Credit Union is the 2023 sponsor of the program.
The 2023 Teachers of the Year are:
Queen Josephine: Mo Owen, Medical Lake High School
Princess Lori: Christopher Ehrlich, Ferris High School
Princess Maddie: Lori Merkel, East Valley High School
Princess Aidyn: Joelle Traynor, Gonzaga Prep
Princess Kate: Marci Groesbeck, West Valley High School
Princess Kaitlyn: Russell Hanson, Lewis & Clark High School
Princess Mercy: Donelle Osborne, Shadle Park High School
The Queen and six Princesses submit an essay that describes the reasons for their nomination.
Among the honorees, going above and beyond was a trend highlighted by each court member. From attending extracurricular activities to offering comfort after a break-up, the 2023 Teachers of The Year all exhibit a deep caring for their students. “Whether I needed college essays to be reviewed or help with all my AP classes or even just somebody to rant to they were always there,” says Queen Josephine of Mo Owen. The honorees are invited to ride as a VIP in the Armed Forces Torchlight Parade on Saturday May 20, 7:45 p.m. in downtown Spokane. The selected teachers will also have the opportunity to ride alongside the Royal Court on a KC – 135 refueling aircraft as guests of 141st Air Refueling Wing at Fairchild Air Force Base.

VOLUNTEER WITH THE SPOKANE LILAC FESTIVAL ASSOCIATION AND SUPPORT A COMMUNITY LEGACY
The Spokane Lilac Festival Association, a civic organization with a rich history spanning 85 years, relies on the assistance of volunteers to carry out its mission. As a non-profit 501c3 organization run entirely by volunteers, the Lilac Festival celebrates its long standing tradition of honoring the military, empowering youth, and showcasing the region. SLFA directors, whose roots date back to WWII times, are an essential part of the festival’s success, meeting monthly to support official festival business and community events.
Volunteering with the Lilac Festival is an enjoyable and rewarding experience. It offers an opportunity to make new friends, share skills, and learn new ones. Moreover, the level of participation and the area of service is determined by the volunteers themselves. As Cecelia Stephens, the VP of Director Engagement, says, “Many hands make light work, and the Lilac Festival’s longevity is a testament to the giving nature of the community and regional volunteers.”
As host to the nation’s largest Armed Forces Torchlight Parade, coordinating civic and military involvement, SLFA volunteers serve as the point of contact with the government, civic, and military activities in Spokane, including Fairchild Air Force Base. Karen Montague, the VP of Community & Military Relations, says, “We find a way to reach all branches of the US military, as well as support the greater Spokane community through a variety of events and programs.”
Being a part of the SLFA is also about having a good time. The hosting committee coordinates arrangements for visiting dignitaries, facilitates arrangements for

Festival events, such as the Royal Tea Party, Queen’s Luncheon, President’s Gala, and more, and comes up with ideas for new events that showcase the region and its people. Jasmin Davis, the Vice President of Hosting, says, “Our events allow us to come together as a community and foster meaningful engagement.”
Annually, the region comes together on the third Saturday in May on Armed Forces Day for the Armed Forces Torchlight Parade. The volunteer Parade Krewe helps with every aspect of the parade, including all entries, parade route, security, bleacher seating, and more. Jamie Dedmon, the 2023 Parade VP, acknowledged the hard work of the Parade Krewe, encouraging others to consider joining the team and continuing the Lilac tradition for years to come.
Throughout the summer and into fall, SLFA Directors travel the region serving as ambassadors of Spokane. Float Toads are an integral part of the festival, building a new float annually and maintaining three floats throughout the year. Float Toads travel with the floats in various parades around the Northwest.
The Royal Court is the most visible aspect of the SLFA, with volunteers coordinating the royalty selection, training, public appearances, and community involvement. Kim Johnson, the Vice President of Royalty, expressed her admiration for the young women involved, thanking the Royal Court Parents, the Royalty Committee, and the Chaperones for their dedication and teamwork.
Adriana Berndt, the Development Director, says, “I want to THANK YOU all – our sponsors, donors, volunteers, and friends – for supporting the longest running community event in Spokane! The reason we’ve been around for 85 years is grounded in community and regional support. Your time, talent, and treasure are essential to us continuing our mission for another 85 years.”
