Spokane New Car Dealers International Auto Show is a showcase of innovation Association president says industry is driven by change, with gains this year in economy, safety and cabin technology.
Kristin Goff
The vehicles you’ll see at the 2013 International Auto Show represent nothing less than a landslide of innovation. Automakers are battling back from the Great Recession with the safest, most efficient and most technologically advanced cars in the industry’s history. “Every year the advances made in automotive technology exceed my expectations,” says Kristin Goff, president of Wendle Motors and president of the Spokane New Car Dealers Association. “Some of this technology has been available for years in the luxury segment but now we’re seeing these features across the board and it’s very affordable.” Goff says gains in fuel economy, occupant safety and cabin technology are driving change.
President, Spokane New Car Dealers Association; President, Wendle Motors
• Efficiency
New drive-train technologies and the increased use of lightweight materials is producing a generation of nimble and thrifty vehicles, she says. Engines are growing smaller but more powerful, thanks to such technologies as direct injection, turbocharging and variable cylinder management. Modern transmissions use up to eight and nine gears (and in the case of continuously variable transmissions, no gears at all) to boost efficiency
• Safety Contrary to the misconception, weight loss does not compromise safety. In fact, improved materials and sophisticated chassis design, along with rigorous standards, are responsible for the safest vehicles in history. “Just as we use to only see the greatest technology in the luxury segment, we would see only the greatest safety features in the luxury segment as well,” Goff says. “Everyone deserves to have the best safety features in their vehicle and that’s exactly what manufacturers are offering.” New safety features include blind-spot detection, lane-departure warning,
adaptive headlights, overhead cameras and back-up cameras with audio alerts and integrated visual warnings.
• Cabin tech Today’s forward-looking systems incorporate voice-activation and smartphone technology for enhanced connectivity and personalized infotainment choices. “Voice-command technology keeps getting better and better,” says Goff. “You can tell your vehicle to change the radio station, turn up or down the heat, make a call, read a text message, find the nearest gas station or give you directions. “What’s so amazing is that all of this can be done without ever taking your eyes off the road or hands off the steering wheel.” But you don’t have to be a techno-geek to appreciate these advances, she says: “There are plenty of models to choose from that don’t have all the advanced technology.”
Global makers, local dealers Thirty-three local dealers will represent 29 car brands at the show. “Spokane is fortunate to have so many great new-car dealers who provide excellent service after the sale as well as volunteer time and much needed financial support to our local nonprofits,” Goff says. In turn, she adds, dealers value buyers who see the importance of shopping locally. “Our customers know that when they shop local, their sales tax dollars help fund our schools, parks, public safety, street maintenance and more.”
Come make your best deal Eager to gain market share as sales rebound, manufacturers are fighting hard to hold the line on price, making this an excellent time to replace an aging vehicle. The Spokane New Car Dealers International Auto Show is a “selling show,” Goff explains, and dealers are prepared to offer buyers the best possible deals. “They look forward to the show because it traditionally kicks off the selling season,” she says. “They’ll be ready to make their best deals of the year.” They also come prepared to offer test drives at the event, so buyers can compare the vehicles they are most interested in. Buying or not, the New Car Show is the weekend’s best entertainment value, Goff adds. “One admission fee is good for the whole weekend and we hope folks will come out as often as they like.”

Ford’s Big Year blends economy, power, utility and comfort
It’s hard picking a headliner out of this year’s crop of Fords, but the Fusion Energi plug-in hybrid is an obvious stand-out. It doesn’t arrive until summer but you can see it at the Auto Show.
Ford’s new midsize Fusion family is growing rapidly, with four distinct models. At the auto show, you’ll be able to preview the 2014 Fusion Energi plug-in hybrid, which will launch this summer. It will be able to travel in all-electric mode for 21 miles, at speeds up to 85 miles per hour, and up to 620 miles on a single tank and charge. Also new is the Titanium AWD, which is powered by a turbocharged 2.2-liter four. The all-new Escape compact crossover offers a robust three-engine lineup, including the 240-hp turbocharged four that powers the top-line Titanium trim to a 3,500-lb. tow rating. The five-passenger C-Max Hybrid hatchback carries Ford’s next-generation power-split technology, which allows operation in electric mode at higher speeds than any other hybrid. Other features include Ford’s hands-free liftgate and the Sync infotainment system.
A 252-hp, 2.0-liter direct-injected four powers Ford’s new hot hatch, the Focus ST. Mated to a close-ratio 6-speed manual, it drives the ST from 0-60 in 6.2 seconds while returning acceptable (23/32) fuel efficiency. Recaro seats and a full gauge package highlight the interior.
Also in the Ford booth: The 2014 Fiesta Titanium, available with a 120-hp four or the award-winning 1.0 liter Ecoboost direct-injected turbocharged three-cylinder engine; the purpose-built 2013 F150 Raptor Super Crew, with its best-in-class 411-hp 6.2liter V-8 and off-road suspension; the 2013 F150 King Ranch Super Crew with its 365-hp/420-ft directed injected twin-turbo Ecoboost engine and best-in-class 11,300-lb. towing capacity.

2013 SL loses weight, gains muscle
The SL drops 400 pounds and gains 42 horsepower. Fuel efficiency is up by 30 percent and a host of new tech comes online.
It’s big news when Mercedes-Benz releases a new iteration of its storied SL-Class hardtop convertible. The sixth-generation, 2013 SL comes to market 400 pounds lighter and 42 horsepower stronger than before. Its all-new body is 90 percent aluminum. A new 5.5-liter bi-turbo V-8 that makes 429 hp (516 lb-ft of torque!) is paired with a new seven-speed automatic. Fuel efficiency is up 30 percent. The crazy-powerful SL63 AMG gets a new 5.5-liter twin-turbo V-8 that’s good for 530 hp. There’s much more, of course, including new safety gear, improved connectivity and entertainment options and glass roof panels that morph from clear to dark at the push of a button.
The large GL-Class crossover is all-new. Larger and roomier, it features three new engine choices, including the fuel-efficient and torque-rich GL350 BlueTEC diesel. M-B debuts its Collision Prevention Assist system on the GL; it uses a dedicated radar sensor to monitor the distance to a moving vehicle ahead -- as well as to stationary objects -- and takes preventive measures in the event of an impending collision. The 550-hp GL63 AMG receives handling and braking enhancements appropriate to its under-the-hood potency. The E-Class family adds new AWD E350 Coupe and E400 Hybrid models. The M-Class adds a rear-wheel-drive ML350 and a new off-road package.
Seven-passenger Buick Enclave gets major updates
Exterior changes include a new grille, hood and lighting assemblies; inside, look for improved materials and the debut of the IntelliLink infotainment system.
Buick’s large, seven-passenger Enclave luxury crossover is seriously updated this year, both inside and out. Up front, a new grille and revised hood add drama. LEDs make their appearance in both headlamp and taillight assemblies, while striking new wheels boost the Enclave’s cool quotient. Vastly improved materials dress up the cabin, while Buick’s new IntelliLink touchscreen display introduces new levels of connectivity. The retuned suspension delivers a ride that is at once compliant and controlled. The Verano sedan offers the ride, comfort and luxury of a large car in a com-
pact package. Until now, however, it’s been down on power. This year, a new turbocharged 250-hp six offers a 70-hp bump over the base engine. Buick boldly offers the Verano with a manual transmission in addition to an automatic. A 182-hp mild-hybrid four is now the default engine for the Regal, with a pair of turbocharged engines optional; one is good for 220 hp, the other for 270. Regal also receives Buick’s smartphone-enabled IntelliLink infotainment system.
Town & Country defies rumored minivan demise Despite the long-anticipated demise of the minivan, Chrysler’s elegant and practical Town & Country thrives. For 2013, its rear-seat entertainment system gets most of the attention: the base system gets a higher-resolution screen, while the premium system includes a Blu-ray player and an HDMI input. Rear-seat USB charging ports are new this year, as is trailer sway control. A muscular, 283-hp six provides the power and the second-row Stow ‘n Go seats remain one of the industry’s best ideas of the past 20 years.
Still practical after all these years, Chrysler’s Town & Country thrives on regular updates. This year, the rear-seat entertainment system feels the love.
Compact ILX sport sedan sets new tone at Acura Acura goes small this year, with the new ILX, a near-luxury compact sport sedan. Three economical engine options entice buyers -- a 150-hp four, a 201-hp four and a hybrid that makes the equivalent of 111 hp. Standard features include sunroof, full power accessories, keyless ignition/entry, dualzone automatic climate control, Bluetooth, rearview camera and a six-speaker sound system with a CD player, auxiliary audio jack, USB/iPod interface and Pandora Radio. Expect Acura’s traditional ride-and-handling package; exuberance without punishment.
The compact RDX crossover is made over, with a new, 270-hp six replacing the previous turbocharged four. Fuel economy, performance and refinement all benefit. Styling -- both interior and exterior -- is cleaner, sharper and bolder and the cabin makes big gains in ambience and tech. Entering its final year of production, the under-appreciated ZDX hatchback receives a redesigned front grille, front and rear parking sensors, power folding side mirrors and such safety features as Forward Collision Warning and Lane Departure Warning. Acura’s near-luxury compact sport sedan ILX is offered with a choice of three powerplants.

Bragging rights go to the Ram 1500
For 2013 the popular pickup receives a mild facelift, but the real action happens in places where it can’t be seen.
Congrats are due the 2013 Ram 1500, newly crowned North American Truck/ Utility of the Year. A serious makeover includes a mild facelift, a stronger and more efficient base engine, a stronger and lighter frame, a new five-mode air suspension and a new eight-speed automatic transmission. The base 3.6-liter V-6 makes 305 horsepower and 269 pound-feet of torque, compared its predecessor’s 215/235. Mated with the new gearbox, it delivers 17/25 (2WD) and 16/23 (4WD). Other engines are a 310-hp 4.7-liter V-8 and a 395-hp 5.7-liter V-8. With the optional air
suspension, ride height is adjustable by 4 inches. Also: Stop/start technology is now available, along with power-folding mirrors, power stainless-steel running boards, a power rear-sliding window with defrost, and a central locking system that locks the tailgate and RamBox cargo system with one button. Also new: optional keyless entry/ignition and WiFi hotspot link.
2013 Ranger Rover is a big loser
Land Rover’s flagship loses 700 pounds, gains rear-seat legroom and rides and handles better than ever, both on-road and off.
2013 brings us a new Range Rover -- a really new Range Rover. An all-new, all-aluminum unibody accounts for a massive, 700-pound weight loss, while smart packaging and a 1.7-inch wheelbase gain yield an additional 4.7 inches of rearseat legroom. Out on the road, the RR performs like a luxury sport sedan, but on those rare occasions it ventures off road, it remains one of the most capable of all stump-jumpers (angles of approach and departure are up and river-fording depth rises from 27.6 to 35.4 inches). Last year’s powerplants -- a pair of V-8s, one rated at 375 hp, the other at 510 hp - remain, and both are paired with an 8-speed
automatic. On the other end of the spectrum, a new, more affordable Evoque trim starts at just $42,000. The LR2 gets a smaller and more fuel-efficient engine. The 2.0-liter turbocharged four makes 240 hp, 10 more than the six it replaces. There’s a new optional tow package for Range Rover Sport as well as a supercharged special-edition trim.
Lexus makes 2013 a year of bold moves
The flagship LS 460 exemplifies the company’s sharp new design motif. Contemporary interiors and improved handling also make the upgrade list.
In its bid to recapture the luxury sales crown, Lexus makes 2013 the Year of Bold Moves. The initiative began in November, 2001, with the reveal of the allnew GS 350 sport sedan, continued in May with the new midsize ES 350 and culminated with the launch of the full-size LS 460 flagship in July. Common to all is a new corporate look, centered around a dashing new “spindle grille,” flowing rooflines and dramatic sheet metal. Interiors are substantially revised, as well; they’re more contemporary and upscale. Lexus’s Remote Touch controller is more broadly integrated.
The three Lexuses receive ride-and-handling updates that make them more engaging and less isolating. Most critically, the GS receives a wider track, stiffer chassis and suspension upgrades that allow it to compete among the world’s best sport sedans. Hybrids continue to be important at Lexus; new versions accompany each of the new sedans. The RX crossover and LX SUV adopt the new family face, as well.

All-new third-gen Porsche Boxster is wider, lighter and stronger
Last generation’s curvaceous surfaces give way to creases and angles. The Boxster cabin is roomier and the seats are lower, boosting headroom.
Porsche’s all-new, third-generation Boxster rides on a chassis that’s longer, lower and wider than before. It drops between 55 and 80 pounds, while getting a more powerful base engine. Larger wheels and new tires produce greater grip. A facelift brings creases and angles that replace the last generation’s curvier surfaces. Its nose is shortened, visually drawing the cabin forward, while LED taillights jazz up the tail. The cabin is roomier and the seats are lower in the chassis, boosting headroom. The base 2.7-liter flat-six makes 265 hp; its 3.4-liter counterpart -- also
a flat-six -- is good for 315 hp. Transmission choices include a six-speed manual and a seven-speed automated manual. The midsize Cayenne crossover gains two new trims this year, the Cayenne Diesel, with a massive 405 lb.-ft. of torque and 28-mpg highway ratings, and the hot-shoe, 420-hp GTS. The 911 family adds AWD Carrera 4 and 4S models.
Toyota’s flagship Avalon improved in every way
Restyled inside and out, the 2013 Avalon is more luxurious, more responsive and better equipped.
All-new for 2013, Toyota’s flagship Avalon has improved its game in every conceivable way. Slightly shorter and wider, it offers more interior space and trunk room. A stiffer body and revised suspension deliver significant ride-andhandling enhancement, while high-quality materials (check out the dashboard accent stitching) dress up the cabin. A long list of standard features include keyless ignition/entry, Bluetooth phone and audio connectivity, a 6.1-inch central
touchscreen display and an eight-speaker audio system with CD player, auxiliary audio jack and a USB/iPod interface. A 3.5-liter V-6 makes 268 hp, which is routed to the front wheels through a six-speed automatic transmission. A touchscreen interface is now standard on all Venzas and the smartphonebased Entune infotainment system is optional. For 2013, the Land Cruiser returns following a one-year hiatus, with exterior and interior tweaks.
Jaguar sedans get optional all-wheel-drive Take heart, snow-country Jag fans: The big cat gets AWD this year. For 2013, the full-size XJ sedan and midsize XF sedan receive optional AWD. As appropriate for a pair of rear-drive luxury sport sedans, the new system has a rear-drive orientation, shifting power to the front wheels only as needed. The XJ also receives a new base engine, a 340-hp supercharged V-6 that will provide plenty of grunt for the lightweight sedan, along with a new eight-speed automatic. FX updates include new headlights and tail lights, new seats, updated controls and sound systems and a new touchscreen electronics interface. Both the full-size XJ and midsize XF sedans receive a new AWD system; it has a rear-drive orientation, shifting power forward only as needed.
Kia takes a breather; adds refinement throughout the line Having just concluded one of the most aggressive series of new-product launches ever, Kia focuses its 2013 efforts on refinement: Optima: A new SX Limited trim brings Nappa leather seating, exclusive 18-inch chrome wheels, LED daytime running lights, red brake calipers, chrome exterior accents and wood interior accents. Soul: Base models equipped with the manual transmission get standard Bluetooth with steering wheel-mounted audio controls. Exclaim: Power folding mirrors are standard. Sorento: The base LX trim now qualifies for the UVO voiceactivated telematics system, power driver’s seat and leather-wrapped steering wheel, while the EX gets standard leather upholstery. Rio: The EX can now be equipped with automatic stop/start technology for improved city mileage, and SXs with the automatic transmission get standard steering wheel paddle shifters. Sportage: LX and EX trims get standard LED headlamp accents.
The new Optima SX Limited trim brings Nappa leather seats, 18-inch chrome wheels, LED daytime running lights, red brake calipers, chrome exterior accents and wood interior accents.

XV Crossover dusts off a proven formula
Black cladding and alloy wheels fend off nicks and bruises; the cabin is comfortably utilitarian, with high-quality materials, comfy seats and a quiet ride.
Take your basic Impreza, elevate its ride height, beef up the suspension and fashion a sweet hatchback and you have the XV Crossover, Subaru’s newest go-anywhere people- and cargo-hauler. Black cladding and alloy wheels protect against nicks and bruises and the cabin is comfortably utilitarian, with high-quality materials, comfy seats and a quiet ride. Power is by a 148-hp 2.0-liter horizontally opposed engine paired with a five-speed manual or CVT. Subaru’s BRZ sports coupe has been available for several months, but it’s officially a 2013 model. Codeveloped with the Toyota FR-S, the BRZ is Subaru’s only rear-wheel-drive car. Accordingly, it sports killer driving dynamics and its 2.0-liter

flat-four makes 200 hp which, in light of its 2,700-lb curb weight, is plenty. The BRZ is perfectly balanced and its standard features list is surprisingly healthy. The Legacy receives a restyled front end, a stronger and more efficient base engine and revised suspension tuning. Available is Subaru’s new EyeSight accident avoidance system. It can adjust the adaptive cruise control system, alert the driver who wanders out-of-lane or apply the brakes if it detects an imminent collision. On display: The 2014 Forester will be on view at the auto show.

Mazda’s midsize CX-5 crossover marries efficiency, comfort and performance
Mazda’s new Skyactiv initiative drives the CX-5 to segment-leading fuel efficiency.
With Skyactiv, its innovative energy-efficiency initiative, Mazda sets out to change our expectations of affordable efficiency. Its 2013 CX-5 compact crossover marries best-in-class fuel economy with a comfortable, contemporary cabin and a surprisingly rewarding driving experience. Its high-tech, 2.0-liter directinjected Skyactiv-G four-cylinder engine makes 155 horsepower and, with front-
wheel-drive, delivers EPA-estimated fuel economy of 29 mpg combined. A roomy back seat and spacious cargo area -- its load floor folds nearly flat -- help make the case. The three-row, midsize CX-9 crossover gets a minor facelift this year, along with a new display screen and updated cabin tech.
Lincoln’s renaissance begins with 2013 MKZ Lincoln’s great rebuilding project starts with the all-new 2013 MKZ. The near-luxury midsize sedan shows off the new corporate grille, which riffs on Lincoln’s late-‘30s Zephyr. An available full-glass roof tops off an expanse of tautly wrapped sheet metal. Inside, Lincoln reinvents the shifter with a column of push buttons on the center stack. Lincoln Drive Control integrates engine, transmission, body and chassis management to deliver a refined ride and engaging dynamics. Three available engines are a 240-hp turbocharged four, a 300-hp V-6 and a 188-hp hybrid. The full-size MKS sedan integrates Lincoln Drive Control and adds a Sport function that alters handling, ride firmness,
throttle response, shift feel, steering response and traction control/electronic stability control. Continuous real-time damping adjusts the suspension 20 times per second for more controlled handling and a smoother ride. There are more standard features; a richer, more elegant interior; and a choice of three engines. The full-size MKT crossover adopts Lincoln Drive Control and Continuously Controlled Damping and an updated MyLincoln Touch telematics interface. Also new: inflatable rear-seat seatbelts, lane-departure warning/assist and a heated steering wheel. Outside, the grille and front fascia have been restyled.
A full glass roof is available on Lincoln’s all-new midsize luxury sedan.
Audi replaces A4 Avant with high-clearance Allroad Audi revives the Allroad moniker and gives it to a ruggedized version of the Avant wagon. The new Allroad is a hair larger than the Avant it replaces and, more to the point, it’s 2.5 inches taller and has more ground clearance. All-wheel-drive is standard as are an efficient 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine and 8-speed automatic. All the expected style, comfort and performance associated with the Audi brand is present and accounted for. As the Avant morphs into the Allroad, the rest of the A4 family receives significant updates. The A4’s front end is aggressively reworked, with new headlights, grille and vents; the steering system now is electrically assisted; and the MMI infotainment interface is
easier to use. For the first time, Audi’s flagship A8 is available with a sixcylinder engine. A new 3.0-liter supercharged six makes 333 hp and is quicker than the eight it replaces. A new 420-hp, twin-turbo V-8 is also available and a diesel six is expected. Audi grows its family of S performance models with the 444-hp RS 5 coupe. The S5 receives style updates and the S6 is powered by a new, 420-hp, twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V-8. A dual-clutch sevenspeed automated manual transmission and AWD are standard. The same powertrain is featured in the all-new A7 four-door coupe. The full-size S8 returns, powered by a 520-hp version of the same new The Allroad is slightly taller than the old Avant and has more ground clearance. AWD is standard. eight.
GMC Acadia gets facelift, refreshed cabin, new features The eight-passenger GMC Acadia is redesigned for 2013, with exterior updates, new cabin tech and dramatically improved interior design. A chiseled, three-bar grille sits prominently in a more upright design, while chrome accents and diffused LED running lamps lend a premium look. Projectorbeam headlights and foglamps are standard. Inside, upgraded soft-

touch materials and French stitching add a tailored look. GM’s IntelliLink touchscreen infotainment system debuts and Smart Slide seats provide seating/ cargo flexibility. The compact Terrain’s new toplevel engine is a 301-hp V-6 that’s 40 hp stronger than last year’s but no less efficient; a new, top-level Denali trim and IntelliLink both debut.

Chevy’s midsize Malibu makes a strong run in the family sedan segment
With its impressively quiet and handsome cabin, high-tech touches and three engine options, the 2013 Malibu becomes a real competitor.
Chevrolet let its mild-hybrid Malibu Eco out of the corral before its more conventional siblings. The Eco’s quiet cabin, high-tech accoutrements and impressive ride pointed toward Malibu’s future in the family sedan segment. Now, two additional engines join the mild hybrid; a 2.5-liter four that makes 197 hp and a 2.0-liter turbocharged four rated at 259 hp. Chevy’s smartphone-based MyLink infotainment system is onboard, along with Bluetooth and more. The 2013 Spark is Chevy’s venture into the mini-car market. Small and affordable, the Spark is loaded with character and a surprisingly rich features set. Power
is by a 1.2-liter four that makes 84 horsepower. The EPA estimates fuel economy at 32 city/38 highway and 34 mpg combined for manual gearbox models and 28/37/32 mpg for those with the automatic. Standard OnStar includes automatic crash notification, on-demand roadside assistance, remote door unlocking, stolen vehicle assistance and turn-by-turn navigation. Coming soon: the electric Spark. The eight-passenger Traverse crossover receives a major facelift both inside and out, as well as the industry’s first center-front airbag and the MyLink touchscreen infotainment system.
X1 crossover fits BMW magic into small package
The X1 compact crossover is smaller and lighter than the X3, but offers the same potent powerplants.
BMW wants to know just how small we’ll go in our appreciation for its brand of Teutonic magic. The all-new X1 compact crossover is significantly smaller and lighter than its X3 sibling, yet offers the same engine choices; a 240-hp turbocharged four and a 300-hp turbocharged six. Available in rear- and all-wheeldrive configurations, the X1 handles like a tall version of the sticky-footed 1 Series sedan. Also new-for-’13 is the 6 Series Gran Coupe. The slippery “four-door coupe” is longer than the two-door 6 Series Coupe and brings roomier rear seats. Engine choices include a 315-hp turbocharged six and a 445-hp turbocharged eight, both paired with an 8-speed automatic. The up-level 650i can be had in RWD or AWD.
The X3 crossover swaps its six banger for a turbocharged four that makes more power and boosts fuel economy. Every X3 gets stop/start technology and an Eco Pro mode that optimizes a suite of operations to maximize efficiency. The 3 Series family debuts a hybrid called the ActiveHybrid3. AWD returns to the fold, along with a wagon and a new M Sport line. The performance-oriented M family receives a host of power and efficiency upgrades (there’s even talk of an M3 equipped with three turbochargers). A limited-production 1 Series M debuts and a new twin-turbocharged V8 in the M5 makes more power than the V-10 it replaces. The same engine powers the M6, which returns after a two-year hiatus.
Hyundai’s Santa Fe gets split identity for 2013 For 2013, the Santa Fe crossover is reborn as two rigs, the five-passenger Santa Fe Sport and the long-wheelbase, threerow Santa Fe. Either way, it’s been snazzily redesigned under the rubric of Hyundai’s “fluidic sculpture” design language. An assortment of engine choices includes a pair of fours in the Sport and a six in the Santa Fe. Both rigs get lengthy standardfeatures lists and a wealth of tech options. Cabin design is first-rate and controls are thoughtfully arranged. Hyundai’s compact Elantra family loses one member while gaining two. But for the absence of two doors, the three-door 2013 Elantra Coupe is essenThe 5-passenger compact crossover grows a second, long-wheelbase 7-passenger trim.
tially identical to the sedan, though there are small changes to bumpers, grille, wheels and accents. The five-door GT Hatchback, which replaces last year’s Touring body style, is 9 inches shorter than its siblings and rides on a wheelbase that’s been trimmed two inches. All three share a 148-hp 1.8-liter engine that can be mated to either a 6-speed manual gearbox or a 6-speed automatic. All are handsome, comfortable, well equipped and affordable. But for the addition of a Turbo trim, the funky Veloster is unchanged. Its new 1.6-liter four makes 201 hp, 63 more than the naturally aspirated base model.

New Grand Cherokee Trailhawk underscores Jeep brand virtues
Rock rails, available air suspension and a host of cosmetic upgrades distinguish the new 4WD Tailhawk trim from its siblings.
Grand Cherokee emerged from its metamorphosis, from truck-based SUV to crossover, with its off-road cred intact. This year’s new Trailhawk trim is available with a 290-hp V-6 or 360-hp V-8 and with the Quadra-Lift adjustable air suspension and Selec-Trac traction control system and adds: red tow hooks and badges, headlights with black bezels, and dark gray wheels, mirrors, and tailgate trim. Check out the matte-finished black and red hood stripe and the rock rails
beneath the rocker panels. Wrangler is the brand emblem, the real Jeep. This year, the 10th Anniversary Rubicon edition packages all-new steel winch-ready bumpers, with removable end caps; greater ground clearance; new rock rails; and a serious set of off-road tires. Also available: A one-of-a-kind “Anniversary Red” leather interior.
Infinity adds seven-passenger JX crossover
The JX features a lengthy standard-features list, a raft of standard and optional safety systems and a seating plan that accommodates passengers of all shapes and sizes.
Next time you visit an Infiniti showroom shopping three-row luxury family haulers, you’ll have a choice of two. This year, Infiniti introduces the JX35, a large FWD/AWD crossover that joins the existing RWD/4WD Q56 SUV. Different strokes for different folks. The slippery-silhouetted JX features a lengthy standard-features list, a raft of standard and optional safety systems and a seating plan that accommodates passengers of all shapes and sizes. Power is by a
265-hp, 3.5-liter V-6 paired with a continuously variable transmission. A new, 325-hp 3.7-liter V-6 replaces last year’s 3.5-liter six as the base engine in the EX and FX crossovers. For the first time, Infiniti’s M AWD trims are available with the Sport Package, bringing a sport-tuned suspension, sport brakes, sport seats and 20-inch aluminum alloys to the large performance-luxury sedan.
New convertible and 41-mpg diesel join Beetle lineup VW expands its diesel offerings in the U.S. with a new turbodiesel option for the Beetle. The 2.0-liter TD makes 140 hp and 236 lb-ft of torque which can be routed through either a six-speed manual or VW’s sixspeed DSG automated manual. With the automatic, estimated fuel economy is 28/41/32 and, with the DSG, 29/39/32. A new soft-top convertible features a powered top that can be raised in under 10 seconds and at vehicle speeds of up to 31 mph. There’s also a new Fender-signature trim whose dash treatment is inspired by the famous guitar.
The GLI is back after a twoyear hiatus. In essence, it’s a Jetta tricked out with a more sophisticate suspension, upgraded steering and the addition of the GTI’s lively and efficient 200-horsepower turbocharged four. Inside, a thick sport steering wheel and soft-touch dash add to the fun. The CC gets five-passenger seating, updated front and rear styling and a new R-Line trim that adds exterior upgrades, unique 18-inch wheels, foglamps and LED running lights.
The Beetle’s new soft top can be opened in less than 10 seconds, and at vehicle speeds of up to 31 mph.
Mitsubishi Outlander Sport adds AWD option to ES trim The compact Outlander Sport crossover receives a facelift, higher-quality speakers and, thanks to improved sound insulation, a quieter cabin in which to enjoy them. All-wheel drive becomes available for the base ES trim and there are minor chassis and steering improvements.
Coming soon: On tap is an all-new midsize Outlander crossover, with a plugin hybrid variant.

Scion fields its first true sports car
The FR-S is not only easy to look at; it’s responsive, brilliantly balanced and quick enough to be a boatload of responsible fun.
Though it was developed with young drivers in mind, Scion had not until this year fielded a proper sports car. The all-new, 2013 FR-S rectifies the oversight. Codeveloped alongside Subaru’s mechanically identical BRZ, the FR-S is responsive, brilliantly balanced and quick enough to be a boatload of responsible fun. Its 2.0-liter horizontally opposed “boxer” four makes 200 hp and 151 pound-feet of torque. Power is routed to the rear wheels by way of a 6-speed manual transmission or a 6-speed automatic with paddle shifters and rev-matched downshifts. A
single trim brings air, full power accessories, cruise control, Bluetooth, a Pioneer sound system, 17-inch alloys and more. The 2013 xD gets front-seat side-impact airbags, updated instrument panel trim and optional BeSpoke premium sound system. Exterior updates include smoked headlight housings and an available two-tone paint job with a blue body and black roof.
New turbo option rounds out Fiat 500 lineup The Fiat 500 family adds a third powertrain option this year, splitting the difference between base models and the hotrod Abarth, which gets a power bump of its own. As before, a 101-hp, 1.4-liter four-cylinder engine drives the Pop, Sport and Lounge trims. This year’s new engine is a turbocharged four rated at 135 hp. All engines can be mated with a five-speed manual or a six-speed automatic. Abarth output jumps to 160 hp. In another 2013 update, the Pop trim can be ordered with the Beats Premium Audio package, with its up-level speakers, trunk-mounted subwoofer and satellite radio.
It’s available in coupe and convertible body styles, and now the Fiat 500 adds a third engine choice.

Roomier, more comfortable Accord offers segment-leading fuel efficiency
With a remake that leaves no important aspect untouched, the ninth-generation Accord vaults back a leadership position in the midsize sedan segment.
Smaller and lighter than before, Honda’s all-new Accord grows more comfortable, roomy and sophisticated. Honda’s new Earth Dreams technology produces segment-leading efficiency: The base 189-hp four-cylinder engine is rated at 27/36 and the up-level, 278-hp six goes 21/34. A full interior redesign includes dramatic materials-quality improvement, flowing dash design and such standard tech as dual-zone climate control, Pandora Internet Radio integration and SMS text messaging. Finally, this is the most functional and best-driving Accord ever.
The 2013 CR-Z hybrid gains a host of powertrain, styling and feature upgrades. Most notable: power from the all-new Lithium-Ion battery pack improves performance as well as mileage ratings. The base price of the Crosstour drops $525, while the midsize crossover receives more purposeful styling, significant upgrades to interior design and materials and a new, 192-hp four-cylinder Earth Dreams base engine that produces 22/31 EPA ratings.
Dart wraps American comforts in European package
Based on the Alfa Romeo Giuletta, the Dart features nimble, responsive handling, a wide variety of trims and packages and a pair of fuel-efficient powerplants.
The 2013 Dodge Dart wraps a chunk of the American past in a sharp new, European-born package. Based on -- but larger than -- the Alfa Romeo Giuletta sold in Europe, the Dart features nimble and responsive handling, a wider stance than most compact sedans and a big variety of trims and packages. The Dart is the largest compact sedan sold in the States and shows it with a roomy cabin and
large trunk. Two engine choices include a 2.0-liter four and a turbocharged 1.4liter four, both of which make 160 hp. Torque is the differentiator: the 2.0-liter makes 148 lb-ft, the 1.4 makes 184 lb-ft and is both quicker and more efficient. An Aero trim runs the 1.4 and promises 28/41 mpg with a stick shift and 28/40 with an available automated manual.
Nissan’s Leaf EV cuts price and charge time; gains efficiency and range
A new entry-level trim debuts for 2013. It cuts the base price by $6,000 to $28,800, less available tax credits and exemptions.
In its third model year, the all-electric Nissan Leaf gains a new entry-level trim that’s priced $6,000 below the existing base price ($28,800, less available tax credits and exemptions). Also: improved energy efficiency, shorter charging times and a more spacious cargo area. New options include leather seating, a Bose
sound system, an Around-View monitor and 17-inch aluminum-alloy wheels. Weight drops 10 percent, aerodynamics are refined and regenerative braking is more efficient. The energy management system is updated and an optional onboard charger reduces 220V charging time to approximately four hours. Range improves by 14 percent, to 142 miles. The midsize Altima sedan is remade with an upscale look and class-leading economy. Suspension and steering systems are updated with a focus on driver engagement. The four-cylinder base engine makes 182 horsepower and, mated to a continuously variable automatic transmission, earns mileage ratings of 27 city/38 highway. A 270-hp V-6 is rated at 22/31. Expect above-average performance, efficiency and comfort. The Pathfinder abandons its truck roots and joins the unibody crossover crowd. The Pathfinder loses 500 pounds in the transition, yet now accommodates seven passengers in three rows and is tow-rated to 5,000 pounds. Its 260-horsepower V-6 is paired with a continuously variable transmission, for a fuel-efficiency rating of 20 city/26 highway. The subcompact Sentra gets a full makeover. Highlights include a roomier cabin, improved fuel efficiency and a new electronics interface. Two inches longer and 150 pounds lighter, it rides on an all-new platform. Power is by a 130-hp, 2.0-liter four that earns up to 30 city/40 highway. The base transmission is a 6-speed manual, with a CVT optional. Inside and out, the Sentra exudes an upscale new look and feel. Interior materials are greatly improved and cabin design is fresh and modern. New dimensions boost both rear-seat room and trunk space.
Volvo’s midsize S60 luxury sedan gets key updates Fans of Volvo’s midsize S60 luxury sedan know it has three variants; the T5, with its 250-hp inline five-cylinder engine; the T6, with its 300-hp turbocharged inline six; and the top-line R-Design, which runs a version of the T6 engine tweaked to 325 hp. For 2013, the T5 adds optional all-wheeldrive. Front-drive versions are a half second quicker to 60 mph, thanks to an increased compression ratio and quicker shifts in
Sport mode. Automatic wipers and headlight washers are now standard on the T5, while the T6 trim adds keyless entry and ignition and a sunroof. The XC90 is mildly refreshed, with a monotone paint scheme, LED running and taillights, and headlight washers. Other updates include optional redwood accents and a leather pull-down strap for the tailgate. The T5 gains an all-wheel-drive option this year and automatic wipers and headlamp washers are now standard.
