ANNUAL HOLIDAY SHOPPING

GUIDE

By Kate A. Miner

GANJA GADGETS

Whether shopping for yourself or your favorite canna-enthusiast, everybody deserves a green holiday! My first recommendation for ‘green gifts’ is to start local. Ask your friendly neighborhood budtender to recommend their latest flower or new edibles and stick to growers nearby. If you’re shopping for others, use Leafly.com and search strains by “Feelings.” This filter can give you recommendations based on someone’s personality and preferences. For example, you can choose a strain that “adds feelings” (like energy or creativity) and/or “avoids feelings” (like dry eyes or paranoia). When it comes to finding other creative ideas, we’ve got you covered. From stocking stuffers to more luxury options, we have suggestions for lots of lifestyles and budgets. We also have a very special extended version of this guide at www.evercannabis.com!

https://blazysusan.com/product-category/ blazy-susans These retro-style rolling trays feature small compartments for every type of accessory including lighters, pre rolls, bangers, even cell phones! Built by smokers for smokers, this homeware accessory will not disappoint. Quality is top notch and comes in a variety of colors. If you’re crafty, you can even get an unfinished tray to create a totally personalized gift. Give it a spin – your coffee table will never be the same!

Seeking sober spectators Cannabis on college campuses remains restricted as institutions maintain zero-tolerance

With the dark, cold days of winter here, sports are a welcome distraction, especially for those who favor regional collegiate teams. The college football season is wrapping up with bowl games this month, and basketball season is definitely heating up.   For a lot of us, chilling with an cold beer or taking a hit off the pipe can nicely enhance our enjoyment of sports viewing, which is fine if you’re of legal age

and watching in the privacy of your home.  But if you’re planning to cheer on one of our local sports teams in person, area colleges and university officials prefer that you leave the weed at home.   Current laws surrounding cannabis consumption are much more strict than alcohol. For instance, it is illegal to consume marijuana in public or in view of the public. And while you may think a more discreet mode of consumption, like edibles or a vape pen, could slip under the radar, getting caught with cannabis at a college sporting event could get you

kicked out of a game at the very least, but also in larger legal trouble.  Why? Federal prohibition.  This stems from the fact that all area colleges receive federal funding and, because marijuana is still illegal at the federal level, higher education institutions are required to have a zero-tolerance stance on cannabis.  “Being a fully-funded institution, any controlled substance is not allowed, even if state law allows it,” wrote Washington State University’s Assistant Director of Athletic Communications Ben Laskey in

an email.   While WSU is one of the country’s leading universities in cannabis research, even establishing a Center for Cannabis Policy, Research and Outreach this year, the plant is very much unwelcome at games.  Laskey says if you are caught smoking anything on campus, including tobacco, the fine is $205. If caught possessing or using cannabis, even medical marijuana, at a WSU sporting event, the punishment is ejection from the venue and being See COLLEGES, 4

Science enthusiast becomes rosin expert Clarice Young excited about sharing knowledge By Taryn Eastwood

EVERCANNABIS CORRESPONDENT

Clarice Young is an expert in creating rosin, a popular cannabis concentrate made under heat and pressure but not requiring solvents.  After mastering the process herself over the last five years, she now visits licensed cannabis farms around the state to help them build rosin labs and train employees.    “I’ve always been a huge science person – I can soak up any knowledge like a sponge and I never call any situation doomed since it can always be changed,” the 28-year-old Young said. “I like to use the term Delta symbolized by a triangle, meaning ‘to change something for the better.’”  Young started learning about rosin from online sources, then began making her own, starting with a hand straightener. This was followed by more videos, more research and talking with others in the industry through Instagram about their techniques.   She then upgraded to learn handson methods using a Sasquatch rosin press, a process she highly recommends.  Young’s cannabis journey began when she was hired as budtender. Soon after, she was asked to help build a producer/ processing facility from the ground up.   She learned what every department did and needed, from trimming to extraction. She also had an opportunity to write the company’s Standard Operating Procedures for each division.    After learning everything at this facility, she felt ready for something bigger. She connected with Brandon Bond, a genetics consultant for In-House Genetics, through her Instagram account @XlariceMelts.  Working with Bond helped Young expand her knowledge base even more, and also provided the opportunity to start reaching out to farms around the state to educate them about genetics and other growing practices.   Currently, Young is able to select plant material from various farms to be processed into rosin. She runs three professional rosin presses plus three washers for InHouse at P&R Processing, a Tier 2 producer/processor located in Woodinville.   “I am all about working with the ‘mom and pop’ grows,” she said. “That was the first thing that really caught my interest. I was taught by true OGs so I feel very confident in my skills in

Not too long ago, Sam Kannall was seriously considering throwing in the towel on Bodhi High.  The company’s CEO and founder was tired, wholesale cannabis oil prices continued to drop hard and fast, and he wasn’t having much fun anymore running the cannabis producer/processor he started in Spokane in 2015.  Sure, those early years were enjoyable and there was a lot of interest in Bodhi High’s products, including topical lotions created by Sam and his wife Erica that blended cannabis and essential oils. As an early licensed medical marijuana grower, he also had great knowledge of the local cannabis market.   But a variety of challenges, including declining prices and quality concerns about one of the company’s flower suppliers, led Kannall to start questioning his path, his commitment to cannabis, and his future in the state’s evolving industry.   Today, all that turbulence is behind him. Washington cannabis companies have been declared essential, and Kannall is loving life again. He’s even gotten back into glassblowing, an early passion.   His enthusiasm is tied into Bodhi High’s own reboot, which Chief Operating Officer Stephanie Lamb said they’ve been calling “Bodhi High 2.0.” This substantial effort in-

volved releasing new products, upgrading packaging, and reformulating internal processes and operations from the ground up.    “What started as a fun catchphrase for us has turned into a new mission statement,” she said. “It has involved a re-imagining, a re-branding and a re-envisioning of the whole company.”    Bodhi High’s newest and most popular products are now Platinum Pure Live Resin and their line of Platinum Pure live resin cartridges.    The majority of the cannabis material used in the live resin vapes is organically grown at the company’s Tier 2 farm in Airway Heights which includes greenhouses and an outdoor growing area.   Plants are grown using light deprivation methods. When they’re ready for harvest, they’re bucked, trimmed, and flash-frozen using dry ice, then taken to the company’s processing facility in Spokane Valley where they are turned into live resin using a closed-loop hydrocarbon extraction system.    A total of 13 employees are employed by Bodhi High, and everyone helps out wherever they’re needed.   “We move as a unit: with a small crew of employees, we are running more efficiently and leaner than we ever have,” Lamb said. “We harvest as a team, we package as a team, we’re a family. Everyone pitches in where they can.”  The company continues to produce the original line of topicals called Bodhi

Elements Skin and Body Care. At the beginning of 2021, this entire line was reformulated and relaunched. These products blend traditional herbal remedies with carefully-selected cannabinoids to hopefully focus on helping certain medical needs.   Another product that was recently upgraded was Odd Duck, an edibles brand under the Bodhi High umbrella. Consumers can choose from four flavors of Belgian chocolate and five flavors of Fruit Jellies, a product with a texture similar to a Gummi bear.   This summer, the Fruit Jellies line was reformulated to be softer and include more flavor. Next year, look for a sour version of Fruit Jellies.   Lamb joined Bodhi High in fall 2020 as production manager, originally tasked with helping restructure and refine processes. She stepped in at the beginning of the year to help reformulate the edibles and topicals lines.   Kannall is enthusiastic about the response being shown to the new products, especially the live resin.   “Consciously-minded, intentionally-driven high-end products is really where we shine, and we hope to bring more products to market in 2022,” he said. “Right now, we’re just trying to keep up with demand – we knew what we had to offer has always been unique, but the growth we’ve been seeing has been crazy.”  Bodhi High products can be found at licensed cannabis retailers throughout Washington.  For more info, visit bodhihigh.com.

Wrap up the year on Beauty Mountain By Seagrin Van Ranson

EVERCANNABIS CORRESPONDENT

“To walk in nature is to witness a thousand miracles.” – Mary Davis For this hike, I chose to explore Beauty Mountain by way of Trails 131 and 130 in Mt. Spokane State Park. This trail is great for year-round use: you can admire wildflowers and forage for berries in warmer months, and strap on snowshoes for a winter wonderland adventure throughout the snowy months. Because the park is open until 10 p.m. in winter, you can wear a headlamp and hike beneath the stars. It’s also a neat little piece of Spokane history! During the Depression, the cabin was constructed in only three days for Civilian Conservation

Corps men from CCC Company 611 and Company 949 (a Junior unit). Compared to other CCC camps around the nation, the food, living conditions and overall morale of Mt. Spokane’s camp was considered superior. In 1934, it was chosen to represent the Fort George Wright District in the Best CCC Camp National Competition and won first place out of over 400 camps. In 1974, the cabin was converted to a warming shelter for snowmobilers. Since the Depression, this cabin has been enjoyed by countless mountain wanderers – including yours truly! To start this hike, cross the road from the SnoPark lot to take Trail 131 uphill toward Bald Knob picnic area. The southernmost peak in the SelSee BEAUTY, 4

kirk range, Mt. Spokane is older than the Rocky Mountains and the Cascades. It was also once much taller than its present-day elevation, but many millions of years of weather exposure have resulted in substantial erosion. This hike’s activity strain recommendation, Pine Queen Dream, understood the assignment and my senses were perfectly heightened. The cerulean sky, the ancient trees full of character, the gold leaves and amber needles strewn about the trail, the scattering of quartz rocks all around, the mica glittering beneath our boots, the frost adding a sparkling touch of pizazz to the late autumnal undertones; none of it went unnoticed or unappreciated. Follow Trail 131 until the Bald Knob picnic area and campground. The campground is closed for overnight use in winter, but there’s a great open-space picnic shelter to take a safety meeting break, if the mood strikes. When you’re ready to resume, continue across the Summit Road to Trail 130 and follow the signs to the CCC Cabin. You’ll be treated to panoramic views stretching from Idaho to west Spokane. In the fall, the golden larches make for an ultra-dramatic backdrop that epitomizes Eastern Washington glam. A little over two miles in, turn right and head uphill to Beauty Mountain where the CCC cabin awaits. Kick back in the cabin (you can even build a fire in the winter), have a snack, whet your whistle and learn more about the history of the CCC. This is also a prime spot for a safety meeting, again, if you’re so inclined. When you’ve exhausted your explorative desires and ready to return, simply retrace your route back to the SnoPark lot. It may be the same trail you took in, but your perspective will be completely different.

Visitors may also be cited for public use or possession by campus or local police, while students will be disciplined for violating the student code of conduct.   Gonzaga University has a similar policy, and cites compliance with the Drug Free Schools and Communities Act that prohibits the possession or use of any drug considered illegal by local, state or federal law.   The act is part of George Bush’s larger 2002 No Student Left Behind Act that supports programs to prevent the illegal use of alcohol, marijuana, tobacco and illicit drugs. Students caught possessing, using or distributing marijuana to others, on or off Gonzaga’s campus, are subject to fines, potential academic probation and suspension. That also applies to sporting events and venues.   The school’s basketball game day webpage communicates that campus security or the Spokane Police Department have the ability to remove any intoxicated person from the McCarthey Athletic Center.  Eastern Washington University is also subject to the Safe and Drug Free Schools And Communities Act. To continue to receive federal funding, EWU is required to prohibit the possession, use and distribution of cannabis and other drugs. Those who choose to use on campus are subject to arrest, confiscation and referral to the Office of Student Rights and Responsibilities, if they are a student at the school.

The scent immediately transports you to a pine-filled forest and will flood your senses with a woodsy, herbal, pine aroma. Whitworth University prohibits all cannabis use and possession on school grounds, but attributes it more to moral and health reasons than government oversight.   The school’s website states “This policy reflects our conviction that possession or consumption within the Whitworth community is inappropriate for moral, educational and developmental reasons … the health risks associated with the use and abuse of these substances are numerous, including exaggerated mood swings from manic to severe depression, loss of memory and reduced cognitive ability, physical deterioration, and, in some cases, serious injury or death.”  Students caught with cannabis at Whitworth are referred to the student conduct process for follow-up while visitors to sporting events caught with pot are asked to throw it away and possibly leave the event.   In Idaho, cannabis hasn’t been legalized for recreational or medical use, either at the state or federal level. That means students don’t have any excuse if caught with it, unlike in Washington where it is legal to use in private if the user is age 21 or over. Cannabis is simply prohibited on the University of Idaho campus and the sale, use or possession of it is a violation of the Student Code of Conduct.   So if you were thinking of taking in local hoops action while chillin’ with a joint before tip-off, that’s a good way to get kicked out of the game and off campus. Most schools also check bags carried into the games and sometimes pockets, so you could also potentially lose your stash, as well as the opportunity to support your alma mater or favorite local team.
