Home Ownership: More than Just a House by Rob Higgins, Executive Officer, Spokane Association of REALTORS® Do you remember giving a book report in school? What your teacher probably never told you is that the assignment wasn’t really about the book or the report. It was about the package of benefits that comes from finding something that interests you, researching it well and using what’s inside to make your own life better. This is the perfect analogy for owning a home because it’s more than just a house. A new advertising campaign by the National Association of REALTORS® uses this idea well in a television commercial called “Book Report.” Perhaps you’ve seen it. A young student walks to the front of the class and says: “This book is about the American Dream, family values and the good guys winning!” He smiles, shares a highfive with a girl in pigtails and takes his seat to the applause of his classmates. While you may not get applause when you buy a house, you will get a sense of satisfaction, accomplishment and so much more because of what’s inside. It’s true – buying a home is about the American Dream, family values and the good guys winning. The book the student in the commercial reviewed was The Field Guide to the Benefits of Home Ownership by the National Association of REALTORS®. While it’s not exactly a book, it is a clever presentation of a collection of data that show the positive impact home ownership can have on communities. Here are some of my favorite take-aways from the report: • Home owners are 28 percent more likely to repair or improve their residence than renters • Each home purchase generates as much as $60,000 of economic activity in the local and surrounding area • Children of home owners are 20 percent less likely to become teenage mothers • Home owners are 28 percent more likely to vote • The college graduation rate for children of home owners is 116 percent higher Additionally, the field guide explains why home ownership has such an outsized impact on individual well-being and communities. Quoting from the report: “Home owners have a financial stake in the value of their home. Therefore, owners have more incentive to deter crime by forming and implementing voluntary crime prevention programs. Some products include a remote control that can change the colorchange speed and intensity of light, whether you’re looking for a partylike atmosphere or a romantic glow. The lights are powered by a rechargeable lithium ion battery, which is either charged on a charger base or with a plug-in charger. Most batteries will last about eight hours. Light cubes are available from Usona Home at $1,315 to $2,875. Brookstone offers more affordable options around $150 to $250, and the cubes also have sound sensors so the light will literally keep the beat.

Take the Indoors Out Who needs a perfectly manicured lawn when you can have a rug? Many people are bringing indoor pieces to the great outdoors with items like Home Infatuation’s weatherproof “natural and terra cotta” outdoor area rugs ($119.95 for their 5-by-7 version), which feature a fun pineapple border and are said to not fade in the sun.

What’s an outdoor gathering in the evening without some flickering flames? Stay warm the whole year and create the perfect outdoor setting with a fire table. These tables come in various materials, including concrete, porcelain, natural stones (granite, marble) and metals (stainless steel, bronze), and some include accents like glass barriers, cobblestone or wooden bases to pair perfectly with your outdoor setting. Fire tables have become popular fireelement options because they are not only a gathering place, they also offer

room for a drink or plate of food. Decorate the fire area with lava rocks, ceramic logs or fireglass. Most fire tables are fueled with propane gas, like the porcelain-tiled Melrose fire table from Frontgate that features push-button ignition, for $1,395.

By ALYSSA KARAS | CTW Features During the dog days of summer, a window air conditioner can be a savior, even if you already have central air. That is, unless it doesn’t cool your room, or leaves it feeling clammy, or sends the occasional flood streaming through the house after a rainstorm. Here, the experts offer a few tips on purchasing the right window unit to make sure you stay cool all summer long. “The first thing that consumers should really be aware of is what size window unit they need,” says Doug Buckwell, senior national account manager for room air conditioners at LG Electronics. The cooling capacity of an air conditioner is rated in terms of BTUs, or British Thermal Units. The larger the BTU, the greater the cooling capacity of the unit. The square footage of the area that needs to be cooled will determine what size unit is necessary, as well as if the area is north-facing or south-facing.
“Even the type of room that you’re cooling is important,” says Mark Evans, product manager for air at GE Appliances.The kitchen, which has a lot of appliances that generate heat, requires more cooling capacity. Buying the wrong size unit is the biggest mistake people make.“A lot of times, due to pricing, they’ll try to buy a smaller unit than they need,” Buckwell says.“That leads to dissatisfaction.” Larger units typically cost more because they’re more expensive to manufacture, he adds. On the other hand, buying a unit that’s too large will cool the room too quickly, leaving a cold, clammy feeling, Evans says. Window units come with myriad options, including energy efficiency (EnergyStar) ratings, programmable timers and remote controls. But another way to get the ultimate enjoyment out of a window unit is simply to read the directions and install it correctly. “Through the years, our installation kit has been modified to make it easier for everybody to install,” Buckwell says. © CTW Features
