Stories of Beautiful Things A new book by Design Sponge’s Amy Azzarito satisfies your design curiosity and DIY cravings Where do mirrors come from? Why do we have museums? Who invented the greenhouse? For those who have a thirst for design knowledge, Amy Azzarito, author of new book “Past & Present: 24 Favorite Moments in Decorative Arts History” (Stewart, Tabori & Chang, 2013), has the answers. Azzarito, managing editor of the immensely popular Design Sponge blog, has been writing online about the history of design styles for years now, expanding the horizons of countless design enthusiasts, amateurs and experts alike. The idea for the book came from Azzarito’s own sense of surprise and wonder as she studied for her master’s degree in decorative arts and design. “I hadn’t even realized these things – that the sofa I’m sitting on now hasn’t always been in our living rooms,” she says.
Mimicry as flattery: Chinoiserie patterns may resemble traditional Chinese scenes, but they are actually stylized approximations that Europeans made when Chinese goods were scarce in the West.
“Someone invented the sofa? What did people sit on before then? Hard chairs?” With the ever-increasing popularity of home-decorating television shows and design magazines and blogs, more and more people are interested in design and how we create the beautiful spaces we see every day. “There are a few things in the book that everyone has heard of before but may not know exactly what it is,” she says. For instance, chinoiserie may have a Chinese aesthetic and the word may sound Chinese, but it’s actually a European take on a Chinese style that gained its own notoriety. Thoughout “Past & Present,” Azzarito eloquently connects each design style of the past to its influence upon the present. The book includes a range from ancient obelisks and Renaissance collections to Victorian style and mid-century modernism. To top it off, she includes DIY projects from 24 designers and artists that embody each design style – including big names in design like Eddie Ross and Todd Oldham. “I went to designer studios with books and gave them a choice of three different topics,” Azzarito says of recruiting people to create DIY projects for her book. “I asked, ‘Which one resonates with you?’ I wanted them to be inspired by this moment in history.” Though Azzarito, who also has a master’s in library science,
has an expansive knowledge of design topics, she chose styles that she thought would spark curiosity in most people. “These are the things I like to ramble on about,” she admits. “If we were at a party together and you asked me about design,” she would talk about how well-to-do Europeans in the 17th century would have servants bring entire fruit trees from their greenhouse into the dining room so guests could pick off a cherry or orange. “That was like the height of elegance,” she says. As for her favorite entries in the book, she cites the secret compartments of Louis XVI as particularly personal. While studying in France, Azzarito recalls visiting Versailles, where her instructor showed her a hidden doorway in a bedroom that led to Marie Antoinette’s private library and dining room. “There was something about seeing that and really understanding public versus private dichotomy in that time period,” Azzarito says. “She had this tiny place to escape to, about the size of my apartment in Brooklyn.” She continues, “Through that, you understand something about people. People never change: We are looking for comfort, privacy and security in our homes, no matter who we are.” This fundamental statement about home design is what ties all the disparate elements of Azzarito’s book together. Design
On a pedestal: Designed by Todd Oldham, this chinoiserie pedestal features cherry blossoms made from patterned contact paper.
has always signified the way we live and how we want to live – home design especially caters to people’s most basic needs. Some might say that constant rehashing of the “retro” and “vintage” signifies stagnation, but Azzarito vehemently disagrees. “Of course what you’re seeing isn’t totally new. We’re working in a historical context,” she says. “Everything is a reinvention... You can see the lineage of design and the way in which design builds on the movements that came before.” © CTW Features

2013’s hottest home trends and easy upgrades will give you impressive - and fast - results. Innovative hands-free faucets simplify cooking and cleaning tasks while requiring minimal effort to install. Open shelving is seeing a boost in popularity. Both glassfronted cabinets and simple open shelves capture this trend, allowing you to put your style on display while creating a sleek, updated look.
In the bath
The top home decor trends for 2013 are already emerging, and homeowners seeking a fresh look will find a lot to love. Not only can these looks be accomplished in minimal time - they’re budget friendly and easy enough for DIYers to finish in a weekend or less. Giving your home an updated feel doesn’t require a full-scale renovation. Instead, focus on simple updates for the most frequently used rooms in your house. When you’re ready to get started on your home’s new look, let these trends of the year be your design guide.
In the kitchen Kitchens need to be functional, but in this hub of the home style is just as important. Upholding practicality while adding visual interest is a top trend this season. Two-toned upper and lower cabinet colors are rapidly growing in popularity as a way to let homeowners customize their kitchen spaces and express their personalities. Maple is the style frontrunner when it comes to wooden cabinets, but painted cabinets in white, black and gray tones are also on the rise. Whether you opt to replace your cabinet fronts or paint them, your efforts
Updating the vanity, often the focal point in a bathroom, provides immediate results. Customizable modular options let you create a storagesavvy vanity that fits virtually any bathroom while also adding functional drawer and countertop space. Tiling provides the perfect solution to add extra personality to your bath. Right now, trends offer two different but equally chic directions - large-scale tile and small-scale mosaics. Tiles with woodlike appearances are also gaining popularity; they create a warm, inviting look, but offer the wetspace practicality of tile. If it’s your first time tiling, home improvement
experts can provide guidance to get started with your tile flooring.
Throughout the home When it comes to low-effort, big-impact changes, it’s hard to beat a fresh coat of paint. New paint makes a color statement and draws attention to architectural details. Follow these paint tips to make an instant, dramatic impression: Alter the dimensions of a space by painting ceilings a slightly lighter color than the walls. Create patterns and shapes using painter’s tape. Stripes, chevrons and ombre effects are perfectly on-trend. Highlight architectural details by painting interior doors and trim in a colorful hue instead of traditional white. In one weekend or less, these simple changes will make your home feel like an entirely new space. So when the seasonal urge to renovate sets in, don’t resist - reinvigorate your home with these ideas.

Kitchen Creature
Comforts
“People are staying in their homes longer,” he says. “You never know what’s going to happen down the road.” Hurst often integrates universal design in the kitchens he plans. “You’ve got to look for creative ways to make the environment as safe as possible for the individual,” he says. “A lot of the time it’s subtle differences. It may not be the entire kitchen.”
On My Level
iStockphoto
Varying the height of countertops is one way to benefit people of different ages and abilities. For instance, Hurst’s company catered to a tall client with a bad back by raising the dishwasher on a platform to eliminate the need to lean over. A countertop height of 34 inches or lower enables people to work while sitting, while a countertop 42 inches high is more conducive to standing. The standard countertop height is 36 inches.

hen considering the most comfortable spot in the home, the kitchen probably isn’t the first room that comes to mind. But the heart of the home has come a long way in the realm of comfort, with designers making kitchen work easier than ever on the mind and body, thanks to a focus on universal design. A concept traditionally linked to accessibility for the elderly and people with disabilities, universal design in kitchens has gone mainstream. More and more, people are opting for features that enhance the kitchen experience at any age – whether it’s for a daughter who wants to make a snack after school, a working adult short on time or an expectant mother. People also are thinking ahead, says Patrick Hurst, vice president of Hurst Remodel, a design/ build firm in Cleveland, Ohio.
Roll it out: Drawers and pull-out pantries, like the one at right, make the most of awkward spaces. They allow easy access to the back of the storage area.
NKBA / Anice Hoachlander
Get comfortable in your future kitchen, where ergonomic and accessible features make the space easier to use for the whole family
Going one step further, a homeowner could install adjustable countertops that move at the push of a button.
Awkward Angles Another often-overlooked place that can cause strain is the windows, Hurst says. Many homes have double-hung windows, which slide up and down, over the kitchen sink. Opening the window can be difficult, because it requires reaching and upward pushing. Hurst recommends installing a different type of window, such as an awning window that is hinged at the top and opens outward. “We’ll design kitchens for people who are in their early 30s, and it applies to everybody,” he says. “Who wants to tweak their back because they opened a window?”
June/July, 2013 15

Drawers also make a difference. Instead of storing dishes, pots and pans in wall cabinets, many people are moving them to deep, pullout drawers. “A lot of cabinet manufacturers are making cabinets where you open doors and shelves slide out,” says Danise Levine, architect and assistant director of the Center for Inclusive Design and Environ-mental Access at the University of Buffalo in New York. “If you have a corner cabinet, you can put in a Lazy Susan. You can bring the storage to you.”
Another growing trend is induction cooktops. On this type of cooktop, the pot or pan becomes heated without the use of gas or electrical coils. It is considered a more energy-efficient and safer form of cooking that reduces the risk of burns.
Steinfeld, who co-authored the book “Universal Design: Creating Inclusive Environments” (Wiley, 2012), says universal design is not just about function. “It’s [about] safety and security for children, independence for young adults, stress reduction for working adults and
independence and maintenance of social engagement for the older person,” he says. “It really brings benefits to the whole population.” © CTW Features
Tech Prep The technology doesn’t stop there. Smart phones, tablets and gadgets of all kinds have found a place in the kitchen, bringing a need for convenient outlets.

NKBA / Richards Photo
Space Planning Essentials
Getting access: This kitchen, designed for a person in a wheelchair, contains features everyone can appreciate – remote controlled stereo system, easy-to-reach appliances and a kitchen table on casters. That means no more reaching too high or too low, Levine adds, and no more difficult searches for the rarely used item that’s been pushed to the back of the cabinet.
Accessible Appliances “I think appliances are becoming more efficient and usable,” Levine says. Appliance drawers (such as dishwasher and refrigerator drawers) have become more common. Levine points to new, high-tech programmable ovens, which can refrigerate a roast during the day and turn into an oven and start cooking when the timer dictates. She’s also seen cordless remote controls that can turn on a hard-to-reach vent.
Edward Steinfeld, an architect, professor and director working at IDEA with Levine, says options include outlets that pop up from the counter or a power strip installed underneath the cabinets. Manufacturers have added touch screens and wireless Internet connections to appliances, allowing people to pull up and easily view recipes. And there’s no telling how much smarter kitchens will get in years to come. “I think we’re going to see the development of virtual coaches,” Steinfeld says. “In the kitchen you’ll have speakers everywhere, you’ll be able to plug in your tablet or your phone, pull up a recipe and it’ll talk you through it. It’s in laboratories right now.”
THE KEY TO A FUNCTIONAL and safe kitchen is good space planning. Experts pay special attention to layout details to save people the headache of having too little workspace or an ill-placed island. For the nonexperts, luckily there are widely followed guidelines. Here are a few: Work center triangle: Danise Levine, architect and assistant director of the Center for Inclusive Design and Environmental Access at the University of Buffalo in New York, says most easyto-use kitchens follow this rule, established by the National Kitchen and Bath Association. It suggests that the total distance between three main work areas – like the refrigerator, the cooking area and sink – should be no more than 26 feet. Each leg of this triangle should be no less than 4 feet and no more than 9 feet. Landing areas: People need adequate counter space next to major kitchen appliances. Patrick Hurst,
vice president of Hurst Remodel, a design/build firm in Cleveland, Ohio, recommends a minimum of 12-inches of counter space on each side of a cooktop. The NKBA also recommends at least a 15-inch landing area next to or above the oven; at least 15 inches of landing space near both the refrigerator and microwave; and at least a 24-inch space on one side of the sink and an 18-inch space on the other side. Cooking surface clearance: The NKBA guidelines state that 24 inches of clearance should separate the cooking surface and a noncombustible surface above it, like a range hood. For an unprotected surface like cabinets, people must allow for at least 30 inches. Doorways: Hurst says doors should be at least 32 inches wide, but for many projects, his firm has increased the width to 36 inches. – Rachel Stark © CTW Features

Festive Summer Flowers Seize the season by adding beautiful flower arrangements to your party décor this summer
This rannunculus arrangement shows that flowers, artfully arranged, can be beautiful in any salvaged container from the kitchen or thrift store.
Photography: Paige Green | Artisan Books, “Flower Recipe Book”
By CHRISTINA ANDREWS | CTW Features
Lush and beautiful flower arrangements give home décor a sense of grandeur. Their natural beauty and perfume means they are highly sought after, but the endless choices (blooms, fillers, vases and other decorations) can seem overwhelming and difficult to put together. Luckily, the duo behind flower shop Studio Choo in San Francisco has released a book with step-by-step instructions, essential knowledge and beautiful photos to make flower arrangement less perplexing and more fulfilling. “Our goal for writing the book was to take the intimidation out of using different flowers,” says Jill Rizzo, who co-authored “The Flower Recipe Book” (Artisan, 2013) with her best friend and Studio Choo
co-owner Alethea Harampolis. “You don’t need a ton of experience to get started. It is all about using what appeals to you,” she adds. The book begins with basic information like tools, types of vases and different cutting techniques. Readers will also learn how to arrange, stabilize and wire the arrangements like the pros. But don’t let the technical terms scare you. “Once you get the hang of choosing
the right vase for the type of flowers, it can be easy and fun,” Rizzo says. Understanding that flower enthusiasts need everything from simple to complex arrangements, the authors provide recipes where focal flowers are “on their own,” “with company” or “for special occasions.” Rizzo says that the trick is to choose one flower or element that attracts you and start from there. Use a particular color that you like and choose a vase that matches your
selection of flowers. For a fun and fragrant party decoration, Rizzo suggests placing sprig of rosemary on a napkin or bundle of lavender as an individual place card decoration or front door greeting. Outdoor parties take on an informal feel when you string together flowers as garlands and hang them above a table or over the backs of chairs. As for formal floral arrangements, Rizzo recommends getting creative with containers to save some money. You can transform literally anything from your kitchen into a vase, she says, such as old cans, sugar bowls and pitchers. “We love to go to farmers market and buy a bunch of things such as multiple small vases with one type of flower. Single flowers can create a lot of impact,” says Rizzo. She suggests buying single flowers and dividing them up into smaller vases or individual bottles to scatter around a party area. Rizzo suggests varying the flower containers to create different ambiences. “A lot of our arrangements can work in a formal setting, but it depends on the container,” she says. On the other hand, “loose wildflower-looking arrangements in a formal setting can add a little playfulness to it.” Sweet pea, for instance, with various color combinations, can be used to decorate your formal space. A footed silver bowl with wildflowers can be placed either in a ballroom or for a farm wedding. Rizzo also suggests placing flowers on crisp white linen to make an informal space look formal. For decorating a kids’ gathering or casual picnic, use flowers and vases that incorporate more unusual elements or brighter colors. “Branches with fruits on them or big, brightly colored dahlias would work beautifully,” Rizzo says. When preparing for summer parties, don’t forget indoor spaces that guests will use. Fragrant flowers in the bathroom are a nice touch. Or, use your backyard space to grow fresh herbs and other fragrant plants. And don’t limit yourself to blooms: “I love using different types of greenery. You can clip leaves and branches from your very own garden or balcony,” Rizzo says. Regardless of your summer entertaining plans, natural flower and plant arrangements add a beautiful touch to home design. “There are so many different types of flowers out there and millions of different ways to arrange them. Give flowers a chance and you will find how surprisingly easy it is to embrace flower arrangements,” Rizzo says. © CTW Features

Get Organized
KITCHEN & BATH TRENDS 2013: Getting Custom
With so many kitchen utensils on the market, including banana slicers, strawberry stem removers and asparagus peelers, it’s helpful to be able to organize all of them. Many organization, home and kitchen stores now carry drawer inserts with individual compartments for kitchen utensils. Different types of drawer inserts have areas for utensils, spices and knives. Many are sold in predetermined sizes, but custom inserts can be ordered as well. Some inserts even have pre-measured knife blocks. If you're looking for the perfect fit, cut-to-size inserts like those from Custom Drawer Inserts start around $45 and the price increases with drawer size, says owner Jim Young. Stores such as WilliamsSonoma (Walnut Utensil Tray with Knife Dock, $59.95) and Lowe’s (Rev-A-Chef Wood Insert Spice Drawer, about $50) sell standardized drawer inserts. Plastic inserts tend to be less expensive — Rachel Graf than wooden inserts. © CTW Features
Easy Entertaining
Custom Cupboards, Inc., offers this feature for their “Facets” cupboards, where you can choose from a selection of graphics or submit your own. Unlike paint or wallpaper, the design will not fade or rub off, since the pattern is applied to the wood itself.
Forget the mini fridge of your dorm days, beverage refrigerators now serve as centerpieces for a dining room or lounge area. The glass door displays your selection of beverages and colored backlights make them even more enticing.
Cabinet Creations Cabinets are often the priciest component of a kitchen, and while there is a range of choices (style, materials and color), cabinets tend to act as the backdrop for other design elements like the backsplash, fancy range hood or pendant lights. Those who want their cabinets to take center stage now can consider custom-designed cabinet fronts, with art, photo-

graphs or quotations digitally transferred directly onto the grain of the wood.
This large-scale personalization will set you back about $2,000 for a few accent pieces. Pricing depends on the design, wood and finish, and will vary with each cabinet, so make sure you’re in your home for the long haul before investing in these features. — Rachel Graf
Entertaining guests in the living room or den, for example, will be much easier without making constant trips to the main fridge. Guests can serve themselves without disturbing the cook or venturing into the messy kitchen. Beverage coolers are available in a wide range of styles and prices.
