Ken Rudy calls himself a word nerd. He was trained as a comparative linguist, but spent most of his working life as a machinist. “(Creating crossword puzzles) fills in for the academic career I never was able to have.” Rudy spends a lot of time cycling, hiking, backpacking and crosscountry skiing, but he is always exer- Rudy cising his mind. “I do read a lot and enjoy trivia and puzzles of almost any kind – in short, anything that stretches the mind and really makes you think.” Rudy said he has always been a crossword aficionado, but he hit a roadblock. “For the longest time, I had a hard time completing any of the New York Times Sunday crosswords,” Rudy said. “About a year ago, something clicked and they started becoming easy to solve most weeks.” Breaking down that barrier inspired him to begin creating his own crosswords. “I haven’t had anything published nationally yet, but I’m getting close,” Rudy said. “I got some very nice feedback on my last couple submissions to the New York Times. That’s the Holy Grail for me right now – to have a puzzle be accepted for the Sunday New York Times.” OK, the New York Times may have a few more readers, but just remember, Ken, you broke in with The Spokesman-Review! Give Ken’s samples a try. There are four crosswords labeled Cruciverbalist Potpourri. You’ll find the answers at the back of the section.
Scramble this
Scattered about in today’s puzzle section you will find excellent photos by The Spokesman-Review photographers combined with scrambled words that will test your local trivia knowledge. These puzzles are perfect for a break from the real brain teasers brought to you by our friends at the national syndicates. They are not real tough, but they are popular and allow us to show off photos from our staff. The puzzles were put together by our talented sports designer Madison McCord. He is used to slam dunks, touchdown spikes and home runs, not puzzles. He made the easy transition, proving once again that sports guys are agile.
