Local puzzle constructors step up to the plate This time we offer a bit of local flavor and style along with the traditional puzzles Last September we published our first special section devoted to puzzles. JOE We expected positive feedback. PALMQUIST Newspaper readers love puzzles. Just try leaving one out or replacing MANAGING a popular one. You learn new cuss EDITOR words. What I didn’t expect is to hear from puzzle constructors, especially local brain-game engineers. In this special section, we highlight three local cranial caretakers. All three reached out shortly after publication of our last puzzle section, Cynthia Morris and Brian Thomas live in Spokane. Robert Morrissette lives in Coeur d’Alene. All three are passionate puzzlers with varying degrees of publishing success. For Morris, 58, her introduction to puzzles was costly for her mom. “She was a former schoolteacher
who knew how important it is to exercise our brains every day,” recalls Morris. “One year during summer break from school – I think I was about 8 – she offered to pay me $10 for every book of puzzles I completed, cover-to-cover, without peeking at the answers in the back.” Morris leaned toward acrostic puzzles, which she says “are a bit like solving a mystery, because solving the clues leads you to a quotation solution instead of just a grid filled with letters. “I would always solve the acrostics first, and then solve the rest of the puzzles as fast as I could so my mom would buy me another puzzle book and I’d have more acrostics to solve. By the time that summer was over, I had a lot more money in my piggy bank, and I had developed what would become a lifelong affinity for
word puzzles of all kinds, but especially acrostics.” Morris isn’t satisfied with the status quo of acrostic puzzles. She takes the extra step of making her word list “mirror the theme” of the quotation solution. “A hand-crafted puzzle like this takes about two days to construct,” said Morris. “There are 50 puzzles in each of my volumes of acrostics and I publish two volumes a year, so I typically put in 12-hour days when I’m working on a new volume.” The long hours make it more than just a labor of love for Morris, who has published 12 volumes of puzzles
with No. 13, CynAcrostics Volume 4: My Word!, on the way next month. Her books are available on her website www.acrosticsbycyn.com. Thomas “I view puzzle construction as an art, and my goal with each puzzle I construct is to hone my craft. I’ve been constructing for 14 years now and I’m still learning to be a better constructor all the time, as both my skills and my understanding of what constitutes a good acrostic puzzle evolve.” Morris wrote Micronesian Blues, an account of six years living and working the far Pacific islands of Micronesia with her husband, Bryan, a university professor. The Morris’ moved to Spokane in 2005 when Bryan took a position with WashingSee PALMQUIST, 20

PUZZLE SECTION
Understanding how to solve an acrostic puzzle Acrostic puzzles were invented by Elizabeth Kingsley, a schoolteacher in Brooklyn, New York, back in 1933. Her puzzles were first published in the Saturday Review in 1934. Solving them is easier than it looks. Start by filling in as many of the answers to the clues as you can, just like solving a crossword puzzle. Then transfer the letters from the words list to the quotation grid — the corresponding grid box number appears beneath each letter of the answers. As you fill in these letters, words and partial words will start to emerge in the grid. Make some guesses, and complete as many of the partial words as you can. For example, “T__E” is probably
“THE,” but it might be “TIE,” or “TOE” or “TEE.” The number and letter inside each box of the grid indicates where the letter you enter in that box can be found in the answers to the clues. For example, “1 N” means the letter in Box 1 comes from the answer to Clue N. Go to Clue N and you’ll find the number 1 under one of the blank spaces for the answer. Work back and forth between the clues/words and the quotation grid until all the letters have been filled. Google a few answers if you get stumped, but no fair peeking at the solution until you’ve finished the puzzle! When the puzzle is solved, a pithy quotation from a published
work will appear in the quotation grid. The first letters of the words list, when read down, will spell out the name of the author and the title of the work from which the quote is taken. Adding to the fun, some of the puzzles are themed, which means that many of the clues and answers mirror the topic of the quotation solution. “It takes far longer than you might expect to construct a good acrostic,” said Cynthia Morris, a Spokane resident who contributed four acrostic puzzles for this puzzle section. “First you need to choose a great quotation, then you need to ‘deconstruct’ the quotation into the word list, and finally you ASSOCIATED PRESS write the clues, making them as Clue C: 2009 Renee Zellweger/Harry Connick Jr. rom-com (3 wrds). clever and interesting as possible.”

PALMQUIST Continued from 2 ton State University-Spokane. “We were eager to get away from the crowds in Washington D.C. and back to a more natural environment,” said Morris. “Spokane has a really good balance of city amenities and outdoor recreational activities. “I not only love my work, I also get to chat online regularly with fascinating people from all over the world,” said Morris. “Acrostaholics come from all walks of life – I’ve gotten to know musicians and woodworkers, scientists and businesspeople, fellow authors and puzzle constructors, cops and soldiers, artists and teachers, actors and newspaper columnists, historians and World War II veterans, and many others.” Like Morris, Morrissette, 56, doesn’t settle for a regular crossword puzzle. From a young age, he zeroed in on unusual dimensions. “Since I was a boy, I have been fascinated with optical illusions,” said Morrissette, who has published four books on 3D crossword puzzles and optical illusions. “They boggle the mind, stretch the imagination, and make the impossible seem possible.” Morrissette has always loved books, especially those with drawings by Maurits Cornelis Escher. His bedroom walls weren’t pasted with sports figures or rock stars, but rather with posters of optical illusions. During the day, Morrissette is a computer programmer for Northern Quest Resort and Casino. In his spare time, he is a prolific puzzle constructor and writer. He published his first book in 2006 and has authored and self-published eight books ranging in topics from forgiveness, generational restoration, religion, garage sales and puzzles. He is currently working on an Instant Pot cookbook. Morrissette said there was a bit of a learning curve to creating optical illusion puzzles. “You have to be very patient and willing to do a lot of trial and error in making words fit. There are times when you have to start over because it just didn’t work.” Initially, Morrissette thought he had enough ideas to fill a book, but within two years he published four puzzle books, all available on Amazon and through his website at www.IllusionsByRob.com. Thomas, 28, has his hands full with two young sons, but still manages to sneak in a few hours a week constructing puzzles. He has been published in the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal and the Los Angeles Times. “For the longest time I just assumed that there was someone at the newspapers whose job was to create a puzzle every day,” said Thomas. “A few years ago I was reading something that mentioned that anyone could make and submit puzzles, so why not take a shot at it.”
