Make your move easier with a garage sale

A

s the school year comes to an end, many families move to new homes during the summer months in order to get settled in before the new school year. Many communities have regulations for how far in advance you can hang signs, and when you need to take them down. If signs are allowed, make clear, readable signs with large black print that includes the dates and address of the sale, and attach them securely. Be sure to advertise your sale in The Spokesman-Review, either in the printed version or on the paper’s website, or both. You can also post information about your sale on www.craigslist.com for free. Start your garage sale early in the morning on the weekend. Bargain hunters

hit the streets early and you’ll miss out on possible sales if you set up late. Mark prices clearly on all items and price things reasonably. Don’t get caught up in sentimentality – your objectioves is to get rid of things and make a little money, not to score big profits. Have plenty of quarters and dollar bills on hand to make change. After the sale, contact local charities to donate the unsold items and other things you’ve marked to give away. Some charities will send a truck to pick up your donations, particularly large items like furniture and appliances. Remember to get a receipt from the charity so you can deduct the donation on your income taxes. On moving day, you’ll be grateful for the extra work you did ahead of time. And when you move into your new house, you’ll be pleasantly surprised at all the storage space you have.

ll of us value our privacy and feeling of safety, whether we are a homeowner or a renter. It’s always helpful to put ourselves in the position of the other person and determine how we would react at an unannounced entry by anyone, even a much-trusted relative, a friendly neighbor or a landlord. It’s usually the unexpectedness of the event that causes stress. Depending on the person, the reactions can be anything from a brief startle to anger. It’s important that all landlords and their tenants know what the landlord’s right of entry entails. Tenants have the right to a 48-hour notice prior to entry for routine matters. Tenants should be aware that most landlords or property managers need enter the unit on average of twice a year (with appropriate notice, of course) to check batteries in the smoke detectors, check for leaks, change filters in the furnace, etc. These are for the tenant’s own safety, health, and well-being as well as to satisfy insurance requirements and for the landlord’s peace of mind. However, Washington State Landlord-Tenant Law states that if the unit is being shown to a prospective buyer or to a potential new tenant, only 24 hours notice is necessary. ... (continued)
