GOODBYE AND HELLO You look right now at Sport Executive. Issue 38 since November 2012. And it will also be the last one. No man will pay for serious journalism. That’s ok. Who cares about corruption, nepotism, child labour, sex abuse, tax haven, human rights, naked capitalism or other boring similarities, when you can read about Ronaldo’s hair, Sharapova’s tits or FC Barcelona in Champions League? Apparently nobody! It’s a shame for sport, democracy and the public. But then again: You have the world you deserve. But Sport Executive does not throw in the towel. We just do the Ali Shuffle and the Sugar Ray Jab and switch to www.sportexecutive.dk. In the future all the stories will be released at the website – not once a month – but when the story is done. It will be in English and Danish. So stay updated with www.sportexecutive.dk. In the meantime you can read this last magazine and share it with your friends. Or you can read about Messi’s boots elsewhere. It is your choice, whether old corrupt men must stay in power, children should be abused, women harassed and so on. Yes, it is boring. But it is the real world. And Sport Executive won’t stay quit. Lars Andersson

SEXUAL ABUSE “‘Don’t cry Anna. Didn’t you say I am like a father to you? (smack, blood in my ear) You have all those boyfriends anyways. I want to keep you focused on swimming. I am thirteen and in a private discussion with my coach that was set up after nationals. Ripping pain, grunts that sound like the monster in a horror movie, blood, my hair pulled out lying on the ground, the smell of fear. It smells like fresh chlorine and metal.” From an essay by Anna Strzempko, describing an alleged 2008 rape at the hands of her swim coach. Publish in Rachel Sturtz: Unprotected. Outside magazine.

SEXUAL ABUSE

THE COVER-UP IN THE POOL

Do you think doping is the biggest problem in sports? Then look under the carpet and find sexual harassment and abuse.

BY LARS ANDERSSON, TEAM TEKSTWERK “Local swim coach banned from sport for life admits sexual misconduct allegations.” “Former Malvern Prep coach arrested for child sex assault.” “Assistant swim coach in Indiana accused of having sexual relationship with student.” The three articles are popping up, when you “google” “USA swimming and sex abuse”. The articles are all from 2015 – and there is a lot of such kind of articles. But swimming in the USA is not the only one with a big problem. New data from Belgium, summarized in 2015, shows that 24.4 percent of LGB athletes, 25.9 percent of elite athletes and 31.4 percent of disabled athletes have experienced moderate or severe sexual abuse (see box, ed.). “This is a major problem in sports. Sexual abuse has been going on forever. And it is not just women as victims, men are too. So if you think doping is the biggest problem in sports, think again. This is a much bigger issue,” Celia Brackenridge says. She was until august 2010 director of the Centre for Youth Sport and Athlete Wel-

fare at Brunel University, West London, and is now Professor Emerita at Brunel.

”I’m sorry. Going back in time, I wish I knew long before 2010 what I know today. I wish my eyes had been more open to the individual stories of the horrors of sexual abuse.” “Today, four long years later, I can truthfully say how sorry I am to the victims of sexual abuse.” “I wish I had known more so perhaps I could have done more.” “I cannot undo the past. I’m sorry, so very sorry.” Chuck Wielgus, CEU USA Swimming, in a blog May 2014. And she has for decades been researching on sexual harassment and abuse in the

sporting world. POWER IMBALANCES “Sexual abuse is a process and not an event. It comes out of a cultural context in which there is a lot of power. Power imbalances are at the core of the issue,” Celia Brackenridge explains. “You know, sports are old fashion with an authoritarian structure. At the top is a lot of power – and at the bottom, where the athletes are, is none. That is a dangerous cocktail,” Celia Brackenridge continues. “It’s a blind spot – and we are frightened to tackle it. Because it strikes us in the heart. But you have to recognize that sport is good, bad and ugly,” Celia Brackenridge says and continues: “You have to change the whole organisation. Recruitment, disciplinary systems, education and so on. Because it affects every corner of an organisation. And this is not about economics or developed and underdeveloped countries. Some of the most developed countries have done nothing

SEXUAL ABUSE about prevention – and some of the underdeveloped quite a lot.” According to Celia Brackenridge there are numerous myths about sexual abuse in sports. One of the myths is that sports are free of the problem. That is not correct. Another is that you can point the finger to specific sports. You cannot. A third is about clothing. Also, that swimming has a larger problem than icehockey. It is not necessarily true. A fourth is that it is all about coaches

“We have provided with stories about how swimmers and/or their parents notified USA Swimming, the National Governing Body of the amateur sport of swimming, about sexually inappropriate conduct by coaches. No action was taken against them.” “Have things changed in USA Swimming? On paper, yes. In reality, only a little.” “USA Swimming continually fails to understand that child molesters go to where the children are. It’s that simple. “ Robert Allard, lawyer. with power. It is not. Senior athletes can be a much bigger problem when it comes to sexual harassment. “It is a lot about authoritarian power structures in sports. And the higher you go the worse it gets,” Celia Brackenridge argues. BACK TO THE POOL Authoritarian structure and power imbalances seem to be the case in USA Swimming. A federation with 400,000 swimmers and 12,000 club coaches and the middle-class favorite sport in USA. In the spring 2010 ABC´s 20/20 and ESPN’s Outside the Lines put together TV shows on USA Swimming’s knowledge of abuse by coaches. In the wake emerged a series

of lawsuits – alleged that some youth swim coaches were molesting their athletes and the abuse went unreported to the Colorado Springs-based organisation or, if so, the safeguards were inadequate. The allegations forced USA Swimming to address the problem, including starting its “Safe Sport” program in September 2010.

The program seeks to facilitate the reporting and investigation of violations of a code of conduct and to educate, train and provide model policies for swim programs around the country about sexual misconduct (see graphic, ed.). USA Swimming even publishes a list of banned coaches. Up till now more than 100 coaches are on that list.

SEXUAL ABUSE coaches every day. This is very encouraging and they see what peers are doing and then employ their own programs,” he says, and emphasizes that USA Swimming Safe Sport program involves six key components: Policies and guidelines, screening and selection, training and education, monitoring and supervision, recognizing, responding and reporting and grassroots engagement and feedback.

“In Swimming for some reason the coaches somehow own the athletes success.” “Athletes need to realize that their parents’ DNA is the biggest factor in their athletic success- no coach has some secret formula.” Jonathan C. Little, lawyer. IT BECOMES A CULTURE But critics say it is too little. Some even say, that youth coach abuse in USA Swimming is the most widespread setting of authority figure rape in America, outside the Catholic Church. And others emphasize that USA Swimming has too many reasons to support its coaches and minimize their crimes. That sexual abuse will continue as long as there isn’t an independent body outside USA Swimming evaluating reports of abuse. And as mentioned at the top of this article sex abuse is still going on in the pool. One of the critics is Jonathan C. Little, attorney at law at Saeed & Little in Indianapolis. He has been dealing with sexual abuse in sports for years and has led many of the cases in swimming to court: “The proper way to handle sexual abuse would be the way that public school would handle the allegation. The teacher is immediately suspended, a hearing is held in short order, and if the finding is creditable the teacher is fired. An independent sex abuse committee would be a good start but Swim-

8

SPORT EXECUTIVE

ming and Olympic Sports in general struggle with “independent”. Swimming needs to obtain objective legal advice,” he says to Sport Executive and continues: “What is wrong with swimming in my opinion is that for decades male swimmers have come through the USA Swimming ranks and have witnessed their coaches having sexual relationships with teenage girls, as you can imagine that becomes the culture. So in United States Swimming the attitude for years was a coach of a club might make a salary of 30,000 or 40,000 dollars but one of the perks was sexual relationship with teenage girls. Boys grew up and emulated their coaches and the problem grew.” “Swimming has done very little to deal with the problem of coaches abusing athletes. First no one from the National Office in Colorado Springs lost their jobs over the scandal. Have you seen Chuck Wielgus (CEO at USA Swimming, ed.) on ABC’s 20/20 in 2010? If you have tell me how on earth does he still have a job,” Jonathan C. Little asks. “So any changes in USA Swimming that have taken place have been forced on swimming by outsiders.” WINDOW DRESSINGS The position is shared by Robert Allard, a

California attorney at Corsiglia, McMahon & Allard L. L.P., dealing with sexual abuse in sports, especially in swimming, since 2009: “On the surface, the changes have been good. However, I have serious doubts over whether the current leadership core, starting with Mr. Wielgus (CEO at USA Swimming, ed.) and the so-called “Safe Sport Director” Susan Woessner is committed to changes. New rules and guidelines are only effective if enforced. Time and again we have seen how this leadership seemingly bends over backwards to protect coaches even in the face of clear acts of sexual misconduct. Until these leaders have been replaced, we consider these changes to be nothing more than window dressings,” he says to Sport Executive. “USA Swimming remains the judge, jury and executioner when it comes to claims of sexual misconduct through its so-called “National Board of Review”, which is led by its lawyers who over the years has actively defended claims on behalf of USA Swimming. The reviewing body needs to be totally and completely independent from USA Swimming,” Robert Allard states. And while sports officials, lawyers and athletes are fighting in USA Swimming, sexual molestation continues. Not just in USA and in swimming, but all over the world and in all sports. Even the legendary boxer Sugar Ray Leonard tells about sexual abuse by his Olympic coach in his biography, and the former high jump world record holder Patrik Sjöberg shocked the Swedish athletics world by revealing that his coach and stepfather sexually abused him as a young boy. It can strike anyone. Sport Executive would have liked to talk with the international swimming federation, Federation Internationale De Natation, and American Swimming Coaches Association and World Swimming Coaches Association about sexual abuse in swimming, but the organisations won’t answer questions from Sport Executive.

THE TYPICAL CASE IN USA SWIMMING The typical case is a young woman usually between 13- 16 from a conservative home, or a home without a father, who started having a “special” relationship with her coach. That “special” relationship with her coach progresses over the years from things like rides home, then first sharing a dirty joke or two, then accidental touching, to more deliberate touching, to then full on sex. These coaches are very calculated and know which kids to pick on. By Jonathan C. Little, Attorney at Law, Saeed & Little, Indianapolis, USA.

RACISM

HOW CSKA’S ARMY MEN ARE ONCE AGAIN FIGHTING FASCISM Racism exists on the Russian football stands. But someone try to change the negative picture of Russian fans. Meet CSKA Fans Against Racism. BY TOKE MØLLER THEILADE No one suffered more than the Soviet Union during the fight against fascism in World War II, or the Great Patriotic as it is known in the former Soviet Union. More than 20 million Soviet citizens died between 1941, when Nazi Germany started the war on the East Front, and May 1945 when fascism was finally defeated. Among the citizens serving in the Red Army several footballers can be found, among these the legendary striker Grigory Fedotov from CDKA Moscow, or CSKA Moscow, as they would later be known as. During the Soviet era, CDKA were the sports society of the army, and while practically living as professionals, all the players were officially employed by the army. When the war started, the CDKA players served in the army like everybody else, although the club managed to secure Fedotov and his teammates some of the more safe jobs, like guarding objects behind the frontline. SEND A KISS After the war, CDKA went to win five consecutive Soviet championships, and in

14

SPORT EXECUTIVE

1961, the army opened the new Grigory Fedotov Stadium in Moscow. Now, 70 years later, the Army Men, as CSKA are known, are once again fighting against fascism, but this time the enemy is internally, and the solution is no longer brute force. That racism exists on the Russian football stands is no secret. The media often tell stories about bad behaviour from the Russian ultras, and the host of the 2018 World Cup has already experienced several racist incidents this season. In fact the 2015/2016 Russian Premier League season was only 29 minutes and 30 seconds old when it was hit by the first racism case. It happened at Otkritie Arena in Moscow, where Spartak took on Ufa, when a group of Spartak fans yelled monkey chants against Ufa’s Ghanaian midfielder Emmanuel Frimpong. Two days later, a declared Nazi participated in the annual Miss RFPL beauty pageant. On her VKontakte account, Olga Kuzkova, the representative of CSKA Moscow, displayed several pictures of herself wearing far right clothing as well as heiling. Around the same time, Zenit’s Brazilian

striker Hulk spoke out about the Russian problems with racism, as he said: “I must say that almost every game I see this happening. I used to get angry, but now I see this doesn’t help, so I just send a kiss to our fans and try not to get angry.” STEP UP While the negative stories get plenty of attention from media all over the world, the story about movements trying to fight racism across Russia get very little coverage. One fan movement trying to change the negative picture of Russian fans is the group CSKA Fans Against Racism. It saw the light after CSKA were punished for the behaviour of their fans during a Champions League match in Rome last year. CSKA were punished for “racist behaviour of supporters, crowd disturbance”, and “setting off/throwing of fireworks and missiles” by UEFA, and they had to play their next three European matches behind closed doors, just like their fans were banned from their following two European away games. I interviewed the founder og CSKA

Photo: All Over Press

RACISM Fans Against Racism, Robert Ustian, for Russianfootballnews.com one year ago, and he explained why it was time for the fans of the Army Men to finally step up and fight racism: “The incident in Rome was the point where we said enough is enough. CSKA’s international image was completely ruined. We are perceived not as a team that won the UEFA Cup, but as one, which has awful racist fans, who focuses only on destroying things and abusing black people. We wanted to show the international football community that those who are mentioned only as racist hooligans are in the absolute minority. ” Under the name #CSKAFansAgainstRacism, the movement quickly gathered momentum on social media, where CSKA fans from all over Russia sent pictures of themselves with anti-racist messages. TAKING A STAND Since that horrible evening in Rome, many things have changed, both among the fans, but more importantly within the club itself. Facing the reality that CSKA could be kicked out of European competitions if they were once again reported for racism, the club has imposed a strict control at the stadium, where both police and stewards now check the fans’ clothing and banners for far-right symbols, and anyone violating these rules are asked to leave the stadium. Furthermore, CSKA accompanied all tickets to their away game in the Champions League qualification game against Sparta Prague, with a letter asking the fans to behave well for the sake of the club. More importantly, the club has taken a clear stand on its official website and social media accounts, where videos with the most popular players sharing their opinion on racism have been shared. The player’s taking a stand on racism had a big impact as Ustian tells Sport-Executive: “The most important thing was that the players didn’t say “please be good so we don’t get punished”. They said; “Racism is bad, we don’t accept that and we’ll never

16

SPORT EXECUTIVE

accept that”.” The statements from stars like Seydou Doumbia, Igor Akinfeev and Alan Dzagoev made the club’s position on racism very clear, and this is something that will affect the younger fans of the Red-Blue of Moscow. “For a young CSKA fan who love Akinfeev – it is great,” Ustian says and continues: “To see Igor say no to racism and calling it a disgrace will affect him.” TO SOLVE THE DEEPER ISSUES Creating an alternative way of supporting the club is one of the main tasks of CSKA Fans Against Racism, as the ultra way was for a long time the only road a young CSKA fan looking to support his club could go. Now, that is no longer the case, and that’s something that indicates a brighter future. “There is an alternative role model now. At least at our club,” Ustian tells SportExecutive. “That is very important. There is now an alternative to the far-right, which is one of the most amazing things.” There is however only so much that can be done at a local level, and why keeping CSKA from being punished by UEFA again was one of the goals by CSKA Fans Against Racism, when it was started, there is also a need to solve Russia’s deeper issues with racism in the society, something that demands a broader solution. A part of the solution could be for UEFA to create the position of an anti-racism officer in Eastern Europe, something CSKA Fans Against Racism proposed in an open letter to UEFA’s Control, Ethics and Disciplinary body members in November. The letter was written after UEFA punished Dinamo Kyiv with two games behind closed doors after four black fans was beaten up during the Champions League fixture between Dinamo and Chelsea in Kyiv. The incident in Kyiv was by CSKA Fans Against Racism called a point-of-no-return, as it was the first time blood had been spilled on European stands due to racism, and it should be

a wake-up call for UEFA to change their approach to fighting racism. This anti-racism officer would be tasked to travel across Eastern Europe to meet with NGO’s, grassroot movements, clubs, FA’s and fans to understand what is going on on the terraces, because it is clear that what UEFA is doing at the moment isn’t working at all. OUT OF THE COMFORT ZONE UEFA are working with a zero-tolerance approach, an approach they are using in the entire Europe, but according to Ustian, the association needs to cut the eurocentrism, and realize that what works in France might not work in Russia, Ukraine or Serbia. Furthermore, UEFA needs to listen to the many organisations working with antiracism work in Eastern Europe. “If UEFA are sincere in their wish to fight racism, they need to get out of its comfort zone and visit the field to find out what is going on there,” Ustian says. When that is said, it is however important to notice that while UEFA’s approach might not be up-to-date racism still remains a domestic problem, that can’t be expected to be solved by an organisation like UEFA. As Ustian says, it is for the future of the children that it is important to get rid of racism, both in the stadiums and in the societies. During the long winter break, CSKA Fans Against Racism hopes to meet with the Russian Anti-Racism Officer, Aleksey Tolkachev, to propose a detailed plan for how to proceed fighting racism on the stands. Even though a lot have been achieved in the past year, more incidents will without a doubt hit CSKA as well as Russia, and instead of only criticizing when things go bad, Ustian and his movement wants to be a part of the solution. The key question that remains is whether UEFA will decide to stand side by side with the activists to fight racism, or if they will choose to hide the problem with the easy solution that is stadium closures...

RUNNING

ON THE ROOF OF THE WORLD

Giuliano Pugolotti has completed 19 desert races. Just to touch the sky with his fingers.

BY GIULIANO PUGOLOTTI The Wakhan Corridor is one of the most inaccessible and remote part of the earth: it’s a small strip of rugged mountainous terrain of the Pamir and Karakoram area separating Tajikistan from Afghanistan and Pakistan. That’s where I fixed the idea of my challenge. I thought long whether to go into this place because I had never done a real mountain race. Yes, I attended a couple of marathons in Austria but nothing special. Around 2,000 meters altitude - I have raced a simple marathon. Where could I do it? On the roof of the world of course! Just to complicate my life. But I live with emotions, passion and challenges. I went to the capital of Tajikistan, Dushanbe, and then two days going to Khourog, the capital of the Pamir. Along

20

the transfer on a road, made of crazy holes and precipices, I had the time to understand and to focus on a world light years away from ours. It’s a place even more impoverished than Tajikistan and the Pamirs. It is sensitive. And it return to me in the term of sickness. I buzzed my head for days and the time of trial was a further form of curiosity and challenge. It started from 3,600 meters without any problems but it is the step beyond the 4,000 which marks a sharp demarcation. I went there to run and not for walking and seeing the yak herders as they moved with their slow pace. But I knew it would be tough to run. And so it was. From 4,000 to 5,000 meters I have felt a huge weight on my legs. The good thing however is that my body apart from the

effort did not produce a signal of altitude sickness. Nothing at all. All that fear before the start consumed unnecessarily. Once again I have even more strengthened my belief that most of our fears are void. The place is unique, bitter, violent and beautiful. Running at eight thousand meters in the middle of nothing and really touch the sky with a finger. That’s where you savor what I call the “Silence of the Limit”. I have run across the Pamir about 300 km and finish my challenge at Bulunkulul Lake, a unique place in the world. And I have touch the sky with my fingers on the Roof of The World. This is Giuliano Pugolotti’s report about his run in the Wakhan Corridor.

“The 2014 FIFA World Cup and the 2016 Olympic Games have both greatly aggravated the level of police and army violence in Rio de Janeiro. Violence against homeless children and adolescents, during protests and evictions, and in Favelas - particularly by the “UPPs (Brazil’s Military Police Force)” - has been reported. These “security measures”, especially in the so called “pacification operations” have caused many casualties and human rights violations. Children and adolescents have shown signs of psychological and emotional damage due to these traumatic experiences.” Terre des Hommes. “The IOC should ensure that the 2016 Summer Olympics do not cause or exacerbate human and child rights abuses in Rio. It is time that the IOC lives up to the values declared in the Olympic Charter.” Ignacio Parker, Secretary General of Terre des Hommes.

In Rio, it is estimated 12,275 people in 24 communities have been displaced due to projects directly linked to the World Cup and the Olympics. Children are the most affected by these violations. In the last six years the transport cost increased by 30 % for poorer families earning up to 100 euro. 11 workers from different Brazilian states had to work on conditions similar to slavery in Rio de Janeiro. A lot of the Atlantic Forest have been destroyed, one of the currently most endangered Brazilian Ecosystems.

EXERCISE

KEEP ON WALKING

Photo: All Over Press

Regular brisk walking is more effective than going to the gym.

BY LARS ANDERSSON, TEAM TEKSTWERK Walk, walk, walk. Why? Because a new study by the London School of Economics found that those engaged in “regular, brisk walking for longer than half a hour a day had lower Body Mass Indexes (BMI) and smaller waists than those who did other exercise such as going to the gym or playing football”. The results were particularly true for women, people over 50 years and those on low incomes. The authors, dr. Grace Jordan and assistant professor of economics Debayan Pakrashi, concludes: “The results thus provide an argument for a campaign to promote walking. Focus on

physical activity is less controversial as it would not be subject to political lobbying as is the case for “fat” tax and other policies that aim to change consumption of junk foods in a person’s diet.” And adds: “Given the obesity epidemic and the fact that a large proportion of people in the UK are inactive, recommending that people walk briskly more often is a cheap and easy policy option. Additionally, there is no monetary cost to walking so it is very likely that the benefits will outweigh the costs. It has also been shown that walking is associated with better physical and mental health. So, a simple policy that “every step counts” may be a step towards curbing the upward

trend in obesity rates and beneficial for other health conditions.” The authors estimated that almost 80 per cent of the UK population is not meeting the government-specified targets. This costs the NHS (National Health Service, ed.) almost one billion pound a year. A very brisk walk means almost short of breath. The study, “Do all activities ‘weigh’ equally? How different physical activities differ as predictors of weight”, are going to be publish in Risk Analysis. READ MORE: www.gracelordan.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2015/11/RiskAnalysisGLDP.pdf

Otte af Danmarks bedste volleyballhold samles igen i år for at kæmpe om at blive dansk pokalmester anno 2015 over to intense dage. Erik Jacobsen, formand for Dansk Volleyball Forbund

Tilmeldingsfrist 24. december www.kidsvolley.net

Foto: CEV

I forskningsprojektet

KONSISTENS ”Man skal have overblik.

Ansat i Team Danmark i 2008.

FINAL 4

HALL OF FAME

Men det gik desværre ud over indskiftningsspillerne.

og gik videre efter at have spillet i 2½ time.

Optaget i dansk volleyballs Hall of Fame i 2014.

VOLLEYWOOD

30

VOLLEYBALL MAGASINET

Man kunne kalde vedkommende for holdets brokkehoved.

MR.
