Editor’s Comments In December we often enjoy cool breezes, but the cruise ships are back in town, and Christmas is in the air on our tropical paradise! Bajans love Christmas, and often it sparks a frenetic burst of activity. It’s a tradition. Gardens and land are tidied, homes are spruced up as entertainment is the name of the game. Food and drink are high on our list with ham, black Christmas Cake, Ponce Crema, Sorrel and all the other delicacies! You might think Barbados is fun, entertainment, food and party, but there is still a serious business element as out Government fights to build a stronger economy. Real Estate is an integral part of this economy. When you enjoy your vacation this Christmas you can browse from a copy of Barbados Property News free or on line at Pamela Hiles, Editor www.barbadospropertynews.com. Make it your second home as visitors always return to our island. There are many properties for sale and for rent. This island is in recovery mode after many hard years, but the tide is turning and there are bargains to buy or rent. As for Christmas, this edition of BPN has plenty of gift ideas for your home and your friends! Take a look at our Christmas marketplace and shop local. Our stores have a great selection and the prices are competitive. To all our faithful advertisers and readers, enjoy this holiday season. The Barbados Estate Agents & Valuers Association News The George Ramsay Memorial Award Galveston Athelstan Ramsay, my grandfather, was born on October 11th 1906. He had a thriving business that included a shop and a funeral home in Speightstown. This unfortunately was lost due to a fire just before my father was born. After losing the business, Galveston, a budding entrepreneur started a job in the Ministry of Agriculture whilst also selling real estate in his spare time. This was the Genesis for what was to become a now 3rd generation Real Estate business. George Arthur Ramsay Sr. was born January 27th, 1950. He attended Harrison College and went on to attend The College of Law, in Surrey England before returning to Barbados where he worked in the legal field at Browne & Chapman, Solicitors and then M.E.S. Hewitt & Co. Solicitors & Attorney-at-Law from 1981 to 1991. In the early 1980s upon his father’s death, George advanced to the helm of Ramsay Real Estate, at just 20 years old and over the next three decades was one of the pioneers of the real estate sector in Barbados. “My father was very big on technology. We were actually one of the first companies, if not the first, in Barbados to have a website for real estate,” he was always actively involved in trying to make real estate better and finding ways to educate the public about real estate because he believed it was one of the best investments

you could make with your money.” This was the foundation of George’s business life. Being an entrepreneur like his father before him, George remained drawn to the real estate field and qualified as a Senior Certified Valuer with International Real Estate Institute, Scottsdale, Arizona in 1982 and quickly become the “go – to” Valuer with all the major financial institutions. George was a well-loved person who lit up a room when he entered and spoke with his great big booming voice that made everyone smile. A dependable, reliable, intelligent man, George soon found himself as a member of the Land Valuation Board with the Land Tax Department, Chairman (Advisor) Town Planning Appeals Panel and various roles with BEAVA including President and Vice president respectively. George was a charismatic man whom people were drawn to. He was a family man and loved his wife and children more than anything. He was very active in the Moravian church and was elected and served several years on the Provincial Elders Conference of the Moravian Church Eastern West Indies Province with responsibility for Property Management and Development. Everyone that came in contact with my father knew him to be an affable, warm-hearted, friendly and frank person. He was often seen on “Morning Barbados” which he regularly appeared on as the real estate specialist. He lived a life of knowledge, service, honesty, Integrity and Morality and will be remembered by my mother, my brother and myself for the wonderful times we shared with him learning and laughing together. The George Ramsay Memorial Award honours my father and the winner of this award will be voted for and recognized by his or her peers in the Real Estate industry as someone who shows the same honesty, integrity and morality as my father did. Real Estate News Barbados and Argentina come together for Climate Change awareness The longstanding Caribbean struggle against the impact of global warming recently added a new milestone. The Errol Barrow Centre, the Embassy of Argentina in Bridgetown and the BlueGreen Initiative Inc. (BGI), in association with the University of the West IndiesCERMES, recently hosted the inaugural screening of “Climate Change: Here and Now”, a three-part documentary film series depicting the impacts of Climate Change in small island developing states. The event opened with a crowded “Green Carpet”, surrounded by information booths and various sponsor displays. The diverse audience attending the affair included Governor General, Her Excellency Dame Sandra Mason; Leader of the Opposition, Bishop Joseph Atherley; Argentine Ambassador Gustavo Martinez Pandiani; Barbados Defense Force Chief of Staff, Glynne Grannum; CDEMA Executive Director, Ronald Jackson; and UWI authorities, among others.

“Climate Change: Here and Now” could be described as a book, where each short is a chapter in the story of climate change. Chapter 1, “De fisheries”, looks at the livelihoods of the fishermen of Barbados and gives voice to the voiceless by highlighting their struggle. Chapter 2, “One Storm Away”, looks at the impacts of global warming and the reality of living in a region one high energy event away from a life altering experience. For that purpose, the documentary narrates the Dominican story of Hurricane Maria in 2017. Finally chapter 3, “Island Strong”, advocates resilience from a Caribbean perspective portrayed through the eyes of a child. BGI´s Director, Senator Crystal Drakes, addressed the participants and pointed out that “If we do not act now, we will leave a much bigger problem for our children. The good news is that, if we all come together to curb Climate Change, we can reduce its impact on our lives, on the environment and on future generations”. After the screening, Ambassador of Argentina Gustavo Pandiani invited the 250 attendees to enjoy a “Cocktail Mix and Mingle” with an abundant variety of Argentine Wines by Brydens Stokes, and expressed “This film is a poetic illustration of the importance of building awareness. It is a work of art as much as it is a piece of science”. He further encouraged everyone to “Look at the issue of Climate Change not only with an open mind, but also with an open heart”.
