Editor’s Comments While watching the stunning sunset at Carlisle Bay recently, I was soooo excited. A huge Cruise Ship – the Carnival Venezia was leaving the port! It’s the first one to visit in many months and it starts the winter tourist season! We have missed the weekly ships who used to home port here and take many locals and visitors around the Caribbean in the summer months. Let’s hope we can get one of them to return for 2024! In the meantime, the winter will see ships, large and small, calling at our port and giving much needed business to the island people. It’s a traditional time in Barbados for everyone to ‘spruce up the home for the season ahead’. Hurricane season is just about over and the jobs around the house that have been put off get done. Painting, decorating, fixing – it all happens in the run up to Christmas. Everyone likes to get their house looking it’s best. This is also the time when the villa owners and snow birds return so the property managers have the task of making sure all is in order. You’ll find plenty of lovely things to transform your property in some of our advertisers showrooms as the stock has arrived and it’s very tempting. Now’s the time for the facelift! And the property market continues to boom. An agent told me recently that they have a west coast project on the beach where many of the units sold before the ground was broken! Good news indeed for the developers. Beach front property is hard to find on the island, especially on the platinum west coast and it makes a great investment. Defining Spaces with Colour Design with Purpose

Our minds are automatically processing or “reading” the visual landscape and our homes or interior spaces are no different. We instantly and unconsciously respond to light, colour and shapes to understand our environment. In large part, colour sets the tone and used strategically, colour can help divert attention or draw the eye to make the most of any room’s best assets.
Take it all in All the items in a room make up the overall palette so don’t forget to factor in the colour of floors, furniture, carpets, curtains, art etc. Choose wall colour that works well with these elements to achieve balance. If elements are neutral, the room is probably screaming for some pops of colour. However if you have quite a bit of colour in your floors and furnishings, neutral walls might be the sweet simplicity that is needed.

Warm and Cool Colours have different characteristics and can be understood in two main groups. Warm colours (reds, yellows, pinks, oranges) will up our energy. Great for social, active and creative spaces. Warm colours work well in kitchen and dining rooms, but also creative spaces or perhaps a workout area. Cool colours (blues and greens) mirror nature and tend to evoke calm and relaxation. Create a focal point Use paint to create interest or to direct the gaze. On the flip side, paint can be used to camouflage details you’d rather people not see. Every room should have a clear centre of attention. It could be a window, a piece of furniture, an accent wall or a piece of art but let there only be one star, to achieve a balanced and cohesive design.
How much colour? It has been well studied that colour has an effect on us and while colours can lift us up, too much colour can also bring us down. Just like sound, when colour is turned up really loud (think heavy saturated colours or brights) or if there are too many colours (or clutter), it can overwhelm us, drain our energy and cause stress. That doesn’t mean there is no

Buyer Beware! You have finally found the house of your dreams. It looks good. From what you can see you’ll just paint your accent wall in the living area in brick orange, upgrade the landscaping, modernize the windows and repaint the exterior and you are good to go. But, wait a minute. Look a little closer. I bet you didn’t notice the remnants of a termite trail which the previous owner hurriedly wiped away from the bottom of the kitchen cupboards. Look again! The current plumbing comprises old galvanize pipes. And, if you just take one more walk through on a rainy day you’ll realize that the foundation of the house was never properly waterproofed and water seeps through the walls into the basement every time it rains. These are the deficiencies that can befall many a buyer if they fail to thoroughly inspect their desired property before signing the dotted line. It happens time and time again and once those deeds change hands there is no recourse. It is now yours, your responsibility, your problem, and possibly your money pit. In North America, a home inspection is part of the purchase process. The inspector is required ethically and legally to report all defects discovered during his inspection. This can significantly impact on the final negotiation process or even whether the buyer opts out of the transaction altogether. Home inspections are not mandated here. The onus is therefore on the prospective buyer to be thorough and attentive. Do not let what you see on the surface fool you. Engage in the services of a professional builder or contractor. They can see past the superficial and readily identify the underlying flaws which might be waiting to trap you in a sea of debt and make you resent your new acquisition. Recently one of my clients was looking forward to closing the deal on purchasing the home she had rented for the last 3 years. It seemed in relatively good shape when she moved in but over time all of its shortcomings became apparent. Some of the doors dragged on the tiles, which suggests that the tiles might be raised due to moisture underneath as a result of a water logging issue. The roof leaks at areas where silicone would have been applied previously so there was no issue before, but now the silicone has become worn. In some areas under the leaks, the wooden floor is now starting to creak. She has luckily evidenced the degradation of the property over a period of time while living there, but imagine if another clueless buyer submitted an offer to purchase the property based on a simple walk through. They may have been none the wiser of the associated defects and imperfections and could have been saddled with unforeseen debt in the long run. Conduct your due diligence or end up totally detesting the very investment you thought would add to your happiness. You’ve been warned! Beware!
