Philadelphia Union vs. Sporting Kansas City 2015 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup Final PPL Park - Chester, Pennsylvania Wednesday, September 30 6 p.m. CT - ESPN2 MATCH PREVIEW: Sporting Kansas City and the Philadelphia Union square off Wednesday in the 2015 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup Final. Led by Manager Peter Vermes, Sporting KC is looking for its third Open Cup title in team history, having previously won the tournament in 2004 and 2012. Meanwhile, head coach Jim Curtin will hope to deliver the Philadelphia Union its first major trophy since joining MLS in 2010. The Union came close in 2014, losing the U.S. Open Cup Final on home soil to Seattle Sounders FC. No team has lost consecutive Open Cup finals since 1975-76.
Louis FC on June 16, then picked up steam with an emphatic 6-2 romp over FC Dallas - a match in which Dom Dwyer scored a club-record four goals. Sporting KC then notched two rivalry wins in the quarterfinals and semifinals, respectively. The team came from behind on both occasions, defeating the Houston Dynamo 3-1 on July 21 before topping Real Salt Lake by the same score line on Aug. 12. Dwyer is currently the 2015 tournament’s top scorer with five goals, while Krisztian Nemeth is close behind with four. Benny Feilhaber has added a tournament-best five assists.
Sporting KC has stormed to the 2015 championship game in style, scoring 13 combined goals in four earlier rounds at Sporting Park. The run began with a 1-0 decision over Saint

in the fifth round and semifinals. The Union first dispatched the Rochester Rhinos in penalties after a 0-0 draw on June 16. Then came a remarkable 2-1 win over D.C. United on June 30 that saw the club erase a one-goal deficit while down a man in the second half. Another penalty kick win ensued on July 21 after the Union, again playing down a man for most of the match, held the New York Red Bulls to a 1-1 draw at Red Bull Arena. Philadelphia clinched their spot in the championship with a 1-0 semifinal win over the Chicago Fire on Aug. 12.

Philadelphia Union vs. Sporting Kansas City 2015 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup Final PPL Park - Chester, Pennsylvania Wednesday, September 30 6 p.m. CT - ESPN2 SPORTING KC NEWS AND NOTES ON THE ROAD AGAIN
Sporting KC is amidst a daunting portion of the schedule that will see the team play eight of 10 matches away from home. The stretch began with consecutive losses to Columbus Crew SC (Aug. 22) and the Colorardo Rapids (Aug. 29). After a bye during the first weekend of September, Sporting KC embarked on a two-game road trip that began in the Pacific Northwest against the Portland Timbers (0-0 draw) on Sept. 9 and ended in the opposite corner of the country against Orlando City SC (3-1 loss) on Sept 13. Peter Vermes’ men were back home on Sept. 18 and earned a 3-1 victory over FC Dallas, while Wednesday’s visit to Houston resulted in a 1-0 defeat. Up next was a nationally televised clash with Seattle Sounders FC on Sunday at Sporting Park, resulting in a 1-1 draw. Their travels now continue with another formidable road trip, beginning with the 2015 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup Final at the Philadelphia Union on Wednesday and ending with a cross-country trek to Portland three days later. After the October international break, Sporting KC will visit San Jose (Oct. 16) before rounding out 2015 with home games vs. Colorado (Oct. 21) and LA Galaxy (Oct. 25).
THREE AMIGOS
Over the course of Sporting KC’s 2015 season, three players have emerged as consistent attacking threats. On any given night, Peter Vermes has been able to count on Dom Dwyer, Krisztian Nemeth or Benny Feilhaber to provide (or create) a decisive goal. It’s a stark departure from 2014, when Dwyer scored 24 times in all competitions and no other player chipped in more than five. By no coincidence, Sporting KC’s run to the 2015 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup Final offers the perfect snapshot of just how impactful the trio has been this season. A simple way of looking at it: Dwyer, Feilhaber and Nemeth have combined for 11 of the team’s 13 goals in the tournament (and, for that matter, 41 of the team’s 58 goals in all competitions). Now in its 102nd edition, the 2015 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup was headlined by the largest field in the modern era (1995-present) with 89 teams in contention when the first round began in May. The 2015 champion will win $250,000 in prize money, while the runner-up receives $60,000. The tournament winner qualifies for the group stage of the 2016-17 CONCACAF Champions League. The Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup has been held annually since 1914 and is open to all amateur/professional soccer teams affiliated with U.S. Soccer. It is the oldest ongoing national soccer competition in the U.S. and the world’s third-longest continuously running open soccer tournament. Sporting KC first won the championship in 2004 with a 1-0 win over the Chicago Fire at Arrowhead Stadium. Eight years later, the club lifted its second Open Cup title with a penalty kick shootout triumph over Seattle Sounders FC at Sporting Park.
NEW KINGS OF THE OPEN CUP?
A year after falling 3-1 at home in the 2014 U.S. Open Cup Final, the Philadelphia Union are back in the championship with unfinished business. Standing in their way is a Sporting KC side making the team’s second trip to the U.S. Open Cup Final in four seasons. On Wednesday, a new U.S. Open Cup champion will be crowned at PPL Park. But in the build-up to the finale, Sporting KC and the Philadelphia Union have already built impressive U.S. Open Cup resumes. Since 2012, Sporting KC has the most U.S. Open Cup wins of any team in American soccer. Next on the list are the Philadelphia Union and Chicago Fire, who met in the semifinal round last month, followed by a Seattle Sounders FC squad that has cemented its status as a perennial power with four titles (2009-2011, 2014) and a runners-up finish (2012) in the past seven tournaments. MOST U.S. OPEN CUP WINS (2012-2015) Sporting Kansas City 10-2-1 (.808) Philadelphia Union 9-3-3 (.700) Chicago Fire 9-4-0 (.692) Seattle Sounders FC 8-2-2 (.750)
THIRD TROPHY IN FOUR YEARS?
But there’s also a broader way of looking at the trio’s body of work in the competition—one that gives historical perspective to highlight just how impressive their collective romp through the Open Cup has been. Four months ago, Dwyer, Feilhaber and Nemeth were nowhere to be found among Kansas City’s all-time U.S. Open Cup scoring and assist leaders. Their combined Open Cup stat line prior to the 2015 season: zero carer goals and zero career assists in Sporting colors. Skip ahead to now, and the club’s all-time Open Cup leaderboards have undergone a makeover. In the span of one tournament, Dwyer has leapt into a tie as Kansas City’s all-time leading Open Cup scorer with five goals. Nemeth is one goal behind, netting four in just three appearances. All the while, Feilhaber has pulled the strings from midfield—his five Open Cup assists are most in team history. ABOUT THE OPEN CUP
On Wednesday, Sporting KC has the opportunity to accomplish a feat that few in MLS have matched. With a win over the Philadelphia Union on Wednesday in the 2015 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup Final, Sporting KC will have won its third trophy in four years. Since 2005, 30 trophies have been up for grabs (among MLS Cup, Supporters’ Shield and U.S. Open Cup). Twelve different teams have won a trophy in that span with only seven teams having won multiple trophies since 2005: LA Galaxy 7, Seattle 5, D.C. United 4, Columbus 3 and Sporting KC, Houston and San Jose with 2 each. If Sporting KC lifts the U.S. Open Cup on Wednesday, they will not only become the fifth team to lift three trophies since 2005, but they’ll be the fifth team to lift three trophies in a four-year span since 2005: LA Galaxy: Seattle Sounders: D.C. United: Columbus Crew:

Philadelphia Union vs. Sporting Kansas City 2015 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup Final PPL Park - Chester, Pennsylvania Wednesday, September 30 6 p.m. CT - ESPN2 SPORTING KC NEWS AND NOTES MIXED RESULTS FOR VISITORS IN USOC FINALS
On Wednesday, Sporting KC will play for their third Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup championship in club history. The 2015 Final will be a familiar spectacle for a team that achieved tournament glory in 2004 and 2012 with wins over the Chicago Fire and Seattle Sounders FC, respectively. This time around, however, there’s one apparent difference: Sporting KC will fight the battle away from home. Arrowhead Stadium was the site of the 2004 title game, while sold-out Sporting Park hosted a dramatic penalty shootout in 2012. Now, Peter Vermes’ side is faced with the task of knocking off the Philadelphia Union at PPL Park. And in a league where parity reigns, home field advantage is oftentimes a decisive factor in Major League Soccer matches. Home teams have a .645 winning percentage in the 2015 regular season. The Philadelphia Union (9-15-7, 34 points) are currently 18th in the Supporters’ Shield standings and have the worst home record in MLS (6-7-3) heading into tonight’s Open Cup Final. On the flip-side, Sporting Kansas City is 3-8-4 away from home in 2015. It’s no small dip in form compared to the previous three MLS seasons, when they aggregated a league-best 24-17-10 road record. Take a sample size dating back to the start of the competition’s modern era in 1995, and it becomes clear that home field advantage isn’t the be-all, end-all in determining who lifts the Dewar Challenge Trophy. In fact, the visiting team has won two straight Open Cup Finals and four of the last eight. Excluding the 1997 and 1999 finals, which were played on neutral sites, road clubs have won seven of 18 Open Cup championship games. 1995: 2003: 2007: 2009: 2013: 2014

The Philadelphia Union will have the luxury of playing in friendly confines, but with that may come added pressure: no team has lost back-to-back Open Cup finals since 1975-1976.
REUNION WITH C.J.
Philadelphia Union forward C.J. Sapong played for Sporting KC from 2011-2014, recording 27 goals and 12 assists in 143 appearances across all competitions. Sapong was named the 2011 MLS Rookie of the Year in his first year with the club, and he played all 120 minutes in the 2013 MLS Cup final at Sporting Park. Sapong also played a role in Sporting KC’s 2012 U.S. Open Cup championship. He was introduced in the 89th minute of the 2012 Final against Seattle and played the final 31 minutes as neither side could break the 1-1 tie in extra time. Sporting KC prevailed 3-2 in a five-round penalty shootout, clinching the win before Sapong was slated to take his penalty. Entering Wednesday, Sapong is tied atop Sporting KC’s all-time Open Cup scoring list with five goals from 13 appearances. Dom Dwyer would pass Sapong for first place with a goal in the 2015 Final. Sapong has enjoyed a strong first year with the Philadelphia Union since joining from Kansas City this past offseason. He leads the team with nine league goals, tying an MLS career-high, while also contributing four assists (one shy of tying a careerhigh).

USOC FINAL FEATURES ELITE MLS ASSIST MEN
The U.S. Open Cup Final on Wednesday will provide a stage on which two of Major League Soccer’s premier playmakers hope to shine. Sporting KC’s Benny Feilhaber and the Philadelphia Union’s Cristian Maidana are tied for second on the league’s assist chart with 14 apiece, one behind leader Sebastian Giovinco. Both players have entered club record books in 2015. We can start in Kansas City, where Feilhaber has notched MLS career-highs in goals (10) and assists (14) while also setting a single-season team record with 19 assists in all competitions. His 29 combined goals and assists means he has played a role in exactly 50 percent of Kansas City’s goals in all competitions. Another impressive figure: Feilhaber has scored or assisted in 21 of his 32 total appearances this year. Maidana, a 28-year-old Argentine import who boasts professional experience in South America and Europe, has set Philadelphia’s single-season assist record (14) in his second MLS campaign. He has scored or assisted in 11 of 30 total appearances and contributed to 17 of Philly’s 44 goals in all competitions (38.6 percent). Maidana’s output has tended to come in bunches, as he’s reached a club-record three assists on two occasions this year and three times total since joining the Union in January 2014. DWYER TO FOLLOW LE TOUX INTO USOC HISTORY BOOKS
Sporting KC main marksman has stamped his name on the 2015 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup. Dom Dwyer leads the tournament’s Golden Boot race with five goals, a tally that vaults him into a tie atop the club’s all-time Open Cup scoring chart. On Wednesday, Dwyer and his teammates will meet the Philadelphia Union at PPL Park with the Dewar Challenge Trophy up for grabs. And while Dwyer is in pole position to claim Golden Boot honors by the end of the night, he’ll likely lock horns with a fellow forward whose Open Cup scoring pedigree is unrivaled. Philadelphia veteran Sebastien Le Toux is the all-time leading scorer during the Open Cup’s modern era (1995-present). To put the Frenchman’s success into perspective, his 15 career strikes in the competition aren’t far behind the combined total of Sporting KC’s current roster (19). Thus, Le Toux has been in Dwyer’s position before. He earned Open Cup Golden Boot honors three consecutive times from 2007-2009, helping Seattle Sounders FC win the championship in the final year of that streak. Le Toux moved to Philadelphia in 2010 and has since led the Union to three Open Cup semifinal appearances in the last four years, including back-to-back appearances in the Final. Most recently, Le Toux booked Philadelphia’s spot in the 2015 title game with the decisive goal in a 1-0 win over the Chicago Fire on Aug. 12. Dwyer isn’t close to matching Le Toux’s career goal tally in the Open Cup, but he’s well-positioned to enter the history books in a different way. Since 1995, no one has scored more than six goals in a single Open Cup tournament. With a goal in the 2015 final, Dwyer would join a group of eight players to hit six in one season. It should also be noted that Dwyer’s main contender for the tournament’s Golden Boot boot award is fellow forward Krisztian Nemeth, as no Philadelphia player has more than two goals. Nemeth has netted four in three Open Cup matches.

Philadelphia Union vs. Sporting Kansas City 2015 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup Final PPL Park - Chester, Pennsylvania Wednesday, September 30 6 p.m. CT - ESPN2 SPORTING KC NEWS AND NOTES (CONTINUED LAST TIME THEY MET: SPORTING KC 3-2 PHILADELPHIA
Playing the team’s 600th all-time regular season match, Sporting KC came from behind for a dramatic 3-2 victory over the Philadelphia Union on Sunday with two goals in second half stoppage time. Jalil Anibaba pulled the home side level in the 91st minute to set the stage for Krisztian Nemeth’s game-winner - the club’s 1000th goal in team history across all competitions - in the 94th minute. The visiting Union took an early lead in the game’s third minute from a corner kick swung in by Sebastien Le Toux. Anibaba nearly cleared the ball - last touched by Jacob Peterson under pressure from Andrew Wenger - off the goalline however assistant referee Adam Garner immediately signaled for the own goal to be awarded by referee Ismail Elfath. Sporting KC responded with a goal of their own off a corner kick in the 16th minute. Dom Dwyer headed home Benny Feilhaber’s service at the back post for his first goal of the season after setting the team’s single-season record with 22 goals in 2014. The momentum from the equalizer was short lived as Philadelphia re-gained their advantage just over three minutes later. Le Toux’s free kick from the right flank found Fernando Aristeguieta, who powered his header past the outstretched arms of Luis Marin from 10 yards out. Set pieces would once again prove pivotal as six minutes of second half stoppage time commenced with the scoreline still 2-1 in Philadelphia’s favor. Aristeguieta cleared away Feilhaber’s free kick from the left sideline but Roger Espinoza was first to the loose ball and lofted an entry pass back into the penalty area. Anibaba won the aerial and snapped his header downward inside the post for his fifth career MLS goal and first since October 2013. The late-game heroics culminated in a milestone moment when Feilhaber’s corner kick - flicked on by Besler - was pushed over the line by Nemeth. A second-half substitute, the Hungarian newcomer’s first MLS goal went into the record books as the team’s historic 1000th goal across all competitions.
2012 SEMIS REVISITED: SPORTING KC 2-0 PHILADELPHIA
Sporting KC has played one previous Open Cup match at PPL Park. In the 2012 semifinals, Peter Vermes’ men squared off against a Philadelphia Union side coached by John Hackworth. Despite losing 4-0 at PPL Park just three weeks earlier in MLS action, Sporting KC prevailed with a 2-0 win thanks to goals from Jacob Peterson and Graham Zusi. Peterson opened the scoring with a 65th-minute header off a free kick from Zusi, who got on the scoresheet himself in second-half stoppage time. Facing elimination, the Union began sending numbers forward to try and find an equalizer. Goalkeeper Zac MacMath had advanced to midfield to aid in the attack and his header under pressure from C.J. Sapong fell into the path of Zusi, who onetimed a 55-yard volley over MacMath and into the empty net to seal the victory.
OKUGO RETURNS TO PHILLY
Sporting KC defender/midfielder Amobi Okugo, who joined from Orlando City SC in July, spent his first five MLS seasons with the Philadelphia Union from 2010-2014. The 24-year-old started 101 of 117 MLS appearances for the Union during that time, contributing five goals and six assists. Between 2012-2014, he led all MLS players with 70 blocks and was fourth in the league with 276 interceptions. Okugo was included on MLSsoccer.com’s “24 under 24” rankings of the league’s top youth talent each of the past two seasons (8th in 2013, 13th in 2014) and joined Orlando City SC for their inaugural MLS campaign in 2015.

PETER THE GREAT
Seventh-year head coach Peter Vermes has stamped his name in the Sporting KC and MLS history books this season. The 48-year-old began the 2015 campaign with 76 regular season coaching wins, good for 14th most in MLS history. More than six months later, Vermes has climbed to eighth all-time with 88 regular season victories—fifth among active coaches behind Sigi Schmid (221), Bruce Arena (190), Dominic Kinnear (151) and Jason Kreis (100). In addition, 2015 has seen Vermes become Kansas City’s winningest coach ever. When Sporting KC beat Real Salt Lake 3-1 in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup semifinals on Aug. 12, Vermes earned his 109th coaching win for the club in all competitions to pass his former coach Bob Gansler atop the club’s all-time chart. Three days later, Sporting KC pulled off a 4-3 comeback win to give Vermes his 87th regular season triumph, also passing Gansler for sole possession of first place in team history. The second-longest tenured manager in team history behind Gansler (1999-2006), Vermes assumed head coaching duties in August 2009 and has since compiled a 111-77-59 record in all competitions. He led Sporting KC to the 2012 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup championship and in 2013 became the first person to win MLS Cup as both a player and coach with the same team. Gansler coached Vermes as manager of the United States Men’s National at the 1990 FIFA World Cup and later in Kansas City when the club achieved the Supporters’ Shield and MLS Cup double in 2000.
FANS FLOCK TO OPEN CUP MATCHES AT SPORTING PARK
Sporting Park drew a total attendance of 72,117 in four U.S. Open Cup matches this summer, setting the single-year record for highest combined home attendance in the tournament’s modern era (1995-present). The venue also achieved modernera attendance records for every round of the competition from the round of 32 through the semifinals. From a nationwide scope, U.S. Open Cup attendance figures over the last 20 years suggest that Kansas City is leading an upward trend. With the championship match still to be played at Philadelphia Union’s PPL Park, 2015 attendance is just 1,830 shy of the previous high of 67,373 set in 2013. Sporting KC’s progression to the final is a large reason why, as quarterfinal and semifinal matches at Sporting Park had more fans (33,706) than the other four quarterfinal/semifinal matches combined (31,837).

Seven Finals in the tournament’s modern era (1995-present) have seen extra times with both Sporting KC and the Philadelphia Union having played in one of those matches. The Union fell to Seattle Sounders FC 3-1 last year, while Sporting KC played to a 1-1 draw through the extra frames before defeating Sounders FC 3-2 on penalties at Sporting Park in 2012. SIXTEEN 16 - The number of clubs who made up the 2015 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup’s fixed bracket, a geographically-based tournament format used for the first time. Four groups of four teams were paired into the East, South, Central and West regions. Le Toux scored 11 with Seattle Sounders FC and four more with Philadelphia. FOURTEEN 14 – The number of times a club from Pennsylvania has won the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup. Bethlehem Steel jointly holds the tournament record of five championships with Maccabi Los Angeles, winning all of them in the tournament’s first 15 years. The Philadelphia Ukrainians also won four during the 1960s. Other Pennsylvania clubs that have won include Harmarville Hurricanes (1952, 1956), Pittsburgh Morgan-Strasser (1949), Pittsburgh Gallatin (1942) and Uhrik Truckers of Philadelphia (1936). THIRTEEN 13 – The number of goals Sporting KC has bagged during the 2015 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, more than any other side in the tournament. Sporting scored one against Saint Louis FC (June 16), six vs. FC Dallas (July 1), three vs. Houston (July 21) and three vs. Real Salt Lake (Aug. 12). TWELVE (20)12 – The only previous time Sporting KC and Philadelphia Union have met in Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup play came in the 2012 Semifinals. Second-half goals from Jacob Peterson and Graham Zusi pushed Sporting past the Union 2-0 at PPL Park. Peter Vermes’ side went on to win the competition a month later, the club’s second Open Cup title in team history. ELEVEN 11 – The number of wins Sporting KC has in the U.S. Open Cup under Peter Vermes. The mark is the most by a Sporting KC head coach in the competition. Philadelphia Union boss Jim Curtin also holds the same record with his club with five overall wins. As a player, Curtin started for the Chicago Fire side that fell to Kansas City in the 2004 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup Final at Arrowhead Stadium. TEN 10 – The number of different clubs that have won the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup in the tournament’s modern era: Chicago Fire and Seattle Sounders FC (4), D.C. Sporting KC: Dom Dwyer (5), Krisztian Nemeth (4), Benny Feilhaber (2), Soni Mustivar and Graham Zusi. SEVEN 7 – The record number of goals scored by one team in a U.S. Open Cup Final. Pennsylvania-based Bethlehem Steel defeated Ben Millers of St. Louis in the 1925-26 Final, the club’s last championship, while Fall River Marksmen of Massachusetts won the club’s second U.S. Open Cup title with a 7-0 victory against Holley Carburetor of Michigan the following year. SIX 6 – The number of U.S. Open Cup trophies won by the coaching staffs of the Philadelphia Union and Sporting Kansas City. Union head coach Jim Curtin and his assistant Mike Sorber won all three of their titles with the Chicago Fire – Curtin in 2003 and 2006 and Sorber in 2000. Peter Vermes, of course, led Sporting KC to the 2012 title. Kerry Zavagnin was his assistant in 2012 as well, but won the club’s first U.S. Open Cup title as a member of the Kansas City Wizards in 2004. SIX (AGAIN) 6 – The number of players still on the Sporting KC roster from the club’s 2012 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup win: Roger Espinoza, Chance Myers, Seth Sinovic, Matt Besler, Graham Zusi and Paulo Nagamura. Philadelphia Union forward C.J. Sapong was also a substitute for Sporting KC in the shootout win. FIVE 5 – The number of goals Sporting KC forward Dom Dwyer has bagged to lead the 2015 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup golden boot race. Former U.S. internationals Josh Wolff (2000 Chicago Fire), Herculez Gomez (2005 LA Galaxy) and Kenny Cooper (2014 Seattle Sounders FC) are standouts on a long list of players in the modern era that have scored six. Dwyer would join that list with a goal on Wednesday, while a brace would give him the modern era record. FOUR 4 – The number of penalty kicks Philadelphia Union goalkeeper John McCarthy has saved during the team’s four-match run to the 2015 Final. After playing to a 0-0 draw with the Rochester Rhinos in Round Four play on June 16, McCarthy saved three penalties to dispatch the USL league-leaders. Just over a month later, McCarthy came up big again, decisively saving a penalty kick from the New York Red Bulls’ Lloyd Sam, setting up Fernando Aristeguieta for the winning spot kick. THREE 3 – The number of consecutive U.S. Open Cup matches Sporting KC forward Krisztian Nemeth has scored in. With a goal in Wednesday’s Final, Nemeth could match Kenny Cooper, who tallied in four straight U.S. Open Cup matches during Sounders FC’s run to the 2014 title. TWO 2 – The number of states Sporting KC has won U.S. Open Cup titles in. Known as the Kansas City Wizards in 2004, Sporting KC defeated the Chicago Fire 1-0 in extra time at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City, Mo.
