#SKCvRSL: BY THE NUMBERS

Sporting Kansas City (1-3-0, 3 pts.) returns home after a pair of tough road games to take on top-of-the-table Real Salt Lake (3-0-1, 10 pts.) at Children’s Mercy Park on Saturday night. Sporting has suffered back-to-back defeats on the road against the Colorado Rapids and Chicago Fire FC over the past two weeks, while RSL is in the midst of a three-game winning streak after defeating Seattle Sounders FC, the New England Revolution and Nashville SC. Sporting and Real Salt Lake met twice during the regular season in 2021, with Sporting dropping both matches. The first meeting took place on May 1, 2021 at Rio Tinto Stadium. Despite taking an early lead through Alan Pulido, Sporting fell to a 3-1 defeat after RSL equalized before halftime and scored a pair of goals in the second half. Sporting hosted RSL at Children’s Mercy Park on Decision Day on Nov. 7, 2021 and fell to a controversial 1-0 defeat. Just minutes after the refereeing crew missed a handball in the area by RSL’s Justen Glad, top goalscorer Damir Kreilach fired his side into the postseason with a game-winner in the 95th minute. Sporting has won just three of their last 18 regular-season games against RSL and are 11-15-8 in the all-time regular-season series and 14-17-10 in all competitions. To add salt to the wound, Real Salt Lake also eliminated Sporting from the MLS Cup Playoffs in 2021 in the Western Conference Semifinals. Meeting at Children’s Mercy Park, Sporting took the lead through Johnny Russell’s first-half penalty kick but RSL rallied in the second half and equalized through Anderson Julio before Bobby Wood scored the winner in second-half stoppage time to send RSL through to the Western Conference Final.

SPORTING KC SOCIAL PROPERTIES

Goalkeeper Tim Melia played for Real Salt Lake from 2010-2011, but never made an appearance for the club. Defender Graham Zusi and Sporting KC II coach Benny Feilhaber have played alongside RSL strikers Bobby Wood and Rubio Rubin on the U.S. National Team. Defender Ben Sweat played alongside RSL’s Justin Meram at the Columbus Crew in 2014, while midfielder Uri Rosell was teammates with Meram at Orlando City SC in 2018. Defender Kortne Ford played alongside RSL goalkeeper Zac MacMath at the Colorado Rapids from 2017-2018. Ford was also given his MLS debut in 2017 by current RSL head coach Pablo Mastroeni while both were at the Rapids. Goalkeeper Kendall McIntosh was teammates with RSL’s Nick Besler at Portland Timbers 2 in 2016. Besler is from Overland Park, Kansas and is the younger brother of Sporting great Matt Besler. Former Kansas City Wizards striker Matt Taylor is an assistant coach with RSL.

Sporting KC Game Notes | March 26, 2022 vs. Real Salt Lake | SportingKC.com/Game-Notes IN NEED OF HOME COMFORTS

SPORTING KANSAS CITY NEWS AND NOTES

MILESTONE MOMENTS FOR FORD & SWEAT

In the midst of a two-game losing streak and having gone 1-3-0 to start the 2022 campaign, Sporting Kansas City returns home this Saturday for the club’s second home match of the campaign when the side hosts Real Salt Lake.

During Sporting Kansas City’s 3-1 setback at Chicago Fire FC at Soldier Field on Saturday night, a pair of Sporting KC defenders reached major milestones in their comeback from injury.

Sporting has won their only previous home game in 2022 - topping Houston 1-0 on March 5 - while the team has lost all three road matches to start the season at Atlanta, Colorado and Chicago. Salt Lake are flying high in a tie for first in the West and the Supporters’ Shield standings with a 3-0-1 record, including a 1-0-1 mark on the road after drawing at Houston and producing a rousing comeback to beat New England 3-2.

Center back Kortne Ford and left back Ben Sweat each made their first starts for Sporting after arriving as free agents this past offseason. Both players arrived with something to prove after seeing the previous stages of their career robbed through injury. Ford was making his first MLS start since 2018 after enduring a torrid few years after the Colorado Rapids mishandled a knee injury suffered in late 2018. A recovery that was meant to take 8-10 weeks ended up keeping Ford out for over three and a half years until he finally returned to the field in the latter half of 2021 on loan with San Antonio FC of the USL Championship. Ford’s first start for the club on Saturday came 1,246 days after his last MLS start for the Rapids on Oct. 21, 2018.

With a host of players out due to injury during Saturday’s 3-1 loss at Chicago, Sporting fielded a makeshift 3-5-2 formation, something Manager Peter Vermes has only done twice in the previous five seasons, resulting in a 0-0 draw at the Colorado Rapids on Aug. 7, 2021 and a 2-0 victory over RSL in the Open Cup on June 6, 2018. Despite some tough results, Sporting has been led by the influence of French midfielder Remi Walter, who on Saturday recorded 15 recoveries - the most of any field player in the league on Saturday. Walter leads all of MLS with 45 recoveries in 2022 and, as a team, Sporting leads the league with 131 recoveries in the opponent’s half.

For 30-year-old Ben Sweat, it wasn’t quite as long a road as Ford but still a daunting recovery after he suffered a torn ACL in just Austin FC’s second game of the club’s existence on April 24, 2021. Sweat missed the rest of the 2021 campaign before returning Sporting’s 2-0 loss to the Colorado Rapids on March 12. His start on Saturday in Chicago was the first start Sweat had made in 330 days.

CRAVING RSL REVENGE

Sporting Kansas City is preparing to host Real Salt Lake for the first time since the Utah side eliminated Sporting from the 2021 MLS Cup Playoffs at Children’s Mercy Park 119 days ago. Sporting will be looking to exact a measure of revenge on Salt Lake, after going 0-3-0 against RSL in all competitions in 2021. Sporting has gone 11-15-8 against RSL all-time in the regular season.

Ford and Sweat were thrust into unfamiliar circumstances in their first starts for the club as Manager Peter Vermes pivoted to an unconventional 3-5-2 formation in the midst of a rash of injuries throughout the team early in the season. Ford went 90 minutes as the right center back while Sweat lasted 77 minutes as the left wing back.

ESPINOZA NOTCHES TEAM GOAL AT CHICAGO

Last season, SKC first fell to RSL on May 1, 2021 in just the third game of the nascent season. Alan Pulido gave Sporting the lead on the day, only for RSL to come back with a brace from Rubio Rubin and a Damir Kreilach goal to lead the hosts to a 3-1 victory.

Sporting Kansas City midfielder Roger Espinoza got his foot on Felipe Hernandez’s cutback and fired home his first goal since late 2020 during Saturday’s 3-1 loss to Chicago Fire FC at Soldier Field - capping a 19-pass build-up.

The regular-season return fixture took place on MLS’s annual Decision Day - the final gameweek of the season on Nov. 7, 2021. Sporting dominated much of proceedings at Children’s Mercy Park before a major flashpoint in the 89th minute.

In doing so, the 2008 MLS SuperDraft selection became the third oldest player to score a regular season goal for the club behind only Sporting Legends Preki and Mo Johnston. Player Preki Mo Johnston Roger Espinoza

Graham Zusi picked out Roger Espinoza behind the RSL backline and the Honduran brought the ball down with just the goalkeeper to beat, only for center back Justen Glad to slap the ball away from Espinoza with his hand. Referee Ted Unkel did not call a penalty on the field and his VAR, Younes Marrakchi, did not recommend a review. Sporting needed a win to claim the No. 1 seed in the Western Conference - as both a draw and a loss left them in third - and with the team piling numbers forward in stoppage time, RSL snatched the winner through Kreilach in the 95th minute. The Professional Referee Organization later acknowledged that the refereeing crew made an error in not awarding Sporting a penalty kick in the 89th minute.

GRAHAM ZUSI, RECORD BREAKER

Sporting Kansas City veteran Graham Zusi made history during Saturday’s 3-1 loss to Chicago Fire FC at Soldier Field, becoming the club’s all-time minutes leader in MLS regular-season play. Zusi has played every minute for Sporting Kansas City this year and on Saturday surpassed longtime teammate Matt Besler to become the club’s minutes leader.

Fresh off that controversial regular-season finale, the two sides met again at Children’s Mercy Park in the Western Conference Semifinals on Nov. 28, 2021. Johnny Russell gave the hosts a first half lead from the penalty spot after Gadi Kinda had been hacked down, but RSL bounced back in the second period with goals from Anderson Julio and Bobby Wood to advance and end Sporting’s season.

Zusi is the first player in MLS history to play 14 seasons all with one club. His 324 career regular season appearances are fifth most in MLS history by a player for one club and the most of any active player. Zusi only trails Chris Wondolowski (SJ - 376), Nick Rimando (RSL - 369), Kyle Beckerman (RSL - 350) and Jaime Moreno (DC - 329).

KEY PLAYERS OUT

#CHIvSKC QUOTES

Sporting Kansas City has started the season with a rash of injuries - mainly centered around the team’s frontline. To start, Sporting opened the season without Designated Players Alan Pulido - due to be out for the season - and Gadi Kinda who both underwent offseason knee surgery.

Manager & Sporting Director Peter Vermes... On the formation and lineup changes: “I think our team actually played well. We were organized. The guys did a great job with us changing the team around a little bit. Obviously, a lot of guys were missing, and a lot of guys were playing in different places today, but they did a fantastic job. I don’t think the scoreline justifies it by any means. The guys actually played really well with that kind of mentality attitude, work ethic and competitiveness in the game. It’s very positive and reassuring for me as we move forward.”

To add to those monumental absences, holding midfielder Uri Rosell went down with a hamstring injury in the season opener at Atlanta United FC, before 2021 MLS MVP finalist Daniel Salloi (calf) and starting center forward Khiry Shelton (calf) have both missed the team’s last two games - losses at Colorado and Chicago. To add insult to injury, Johnny Russell exited the loss in Colorado with a hamstring concern and also missed the loss to Chicago.

On Ben Sweat and Kortne Ford’s performance: “I think they were like the rest of the guys. Ben probably ran out a little gas at the end there, but that’s the first time he’s played 75 minutes, probably in over a year. He was good in a lot of aspects of the game. Ben’s got a good brain for the game, reads it well. Like any player, when you’re out for a while, you need to get back in a routine at your position. He needs a little bit of that, but that’s only going to come with him playing. I thought he was good. Kortne did a good job in the game. Again, he had not played and had his first game in a changed formation when he’s been training all preseason, and up until now with us in a different way. He did a really good job in the game. Defensively, we were organized really well. I give the guys a lot of credit.”

It continues a trend where Sporting has rarely had their most dangerous attacking players available at the same time over the past few seasons. Since the start of 2020, Sporting Kansas City will have started Salloi along with DP trio Kinda, Pulido and Johnny Russell in just four of 90 regular season games. In the same timeframe, Sporting will have started Salloi, Pulido and Russell in only seven of 90 regular season games. Manager & Sporting Director Peter Vermes took the rare step of altering Sporting’s formation with so many players unavailable during Saturday’s game in Chicago, employing a 3-5-2 formation rather than the customary 4-3-3. Nikola Vujnovic started his second game for the club with Homegrown midfielder Cam Duke playing just underneath.

Sporting KC Game Notes | March 26, 2022 vs. Real Salt Lake | SportingKC.com/Game-Notes Manager & Sporting Director | Peter Vermes

Assistant Coach | Kerry Zavagnin Assistant Coach Kerry Zavagnin first joined Kansas City in 2000 as a holding midfielder and was an integral part of the club’s midfield for the next nine seasons, during which time he helped lead the Wizards to MLS Cup (2000) and U.S. Open Cup (2004) Championships. He was named to the MLS All-Star team and the Best XI in 2004. Zavagnin’s primary duties as an assistant include scouting, developing Sporting Kansas City’s younger players, breaking down film and assisting with training sessions, among others.

Peter Vermes is in his 14th season as Sporting Kansas City Manager in 2022 and is the longest-tenured active head coach in MLS. He is the team’s longest-serving manager and his 209 coaching victories in all competitions are the most club history. During his tenure, he has won four major trophies – the 2012, 2015 and 2017 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cups and the 2013 MLS Cup championship – and finished atop the Eastern Conference regularseason standings in 2011 and 2012, as well as the Western Conference in 2018 and 2020. His three U.S. Open Cup championships are the third most in Open Cup history. He is the first coach in club history to lead Sporting KC to eight straight postseason appearances, as well as the only person to ever win the MLS Cup as both a player and a coach with the same team. His 173 regular-season wins top the club’s all-time chart and rank fifth most in MLS history. He passed his former coach Bob Gansler as the winningest manager in team history with a 3-1 win over Real Salt Lake on Aug. 12, 2015, his 109th victory in all competitions.

He started his professional career with the New York/New Jersey MetroStars, where he played in 39 games over two seasons. After spending one season with the Lehigh Valley Steam (USL-1), Zavagnin came to Kansas City in 2000. He played 237 games (228 starts) and logged 20,516 minutes for Kansas City, setting team records in both categories before both were overtaken by Matt Besler early in 2018. He scored eight goals and added 22 assists in his nine seasons in Kansas City blue. Zavagnin was named Team Defender of the Year in 2001.

On August 4, 2018, Vermes coached his 302nd MLS regular-season game with Sporting KC, becoming the league’s all-time leader in games coached for one club. He was named the first-ever MLS Sporting Executive of the Year by his peers in 2018. Vermes has coached 482 total games during his Kansas City coaching career, most in club history.

On top of his club success in Kansas City, Zavagnin also appeared 21 times for the United States Men’s National Team. He recorded one assist for the U.S., who went 15-2-4 when Zavagnin featured. He married his wife Mirriam prior to the 2009 season, when he became an assistant coach at the club.

With over 14 years of service at Sporting KC, Vermes is one of the longest serving managers in world soccer. Among all 18 leagues with an average attendance of 10,000+, Vermes ranks second, only behind 2. Bundesliga side FC Heidenheim’s Frank Schmidt (Sept. 17, 2007 – present). Among the top 51 leagues in the world as denoted by the CIES Football Observatory, Vermes’ tenure at Sporting KC ranks as the sixth longest active run.

Assistant Coach | Zoran Savic Assistant Coach Zoran Savic joined Sporting Kansas City late in the 2009 season after a 30-year career at all levels of the game in the United States. A native of Gornji Milanovac, Yugoslavia, Savic began his journey through American soccer with the Buffalo Stallions of the Major Indoor Soccer League in 1980. Savic would go on to star for several MISL teams, with his most prosperous period coming with the Kansas City Comets, with whom he scored 70 goals in just over 100 appearances from 1982-1984.

Vermes oversees all soccer operations for Sporting KC, including the active roster, Sporting Kansas City II (MLS NEXT Pro) and the Sporting KC Academy. Vermes entered MLS ahead of its inaugural season in 1996 and retired from the league in 2002, closing out his playing career in Kansas City after stints with the New York/New Jersey MetroStars and Colorado Rapids.

After retiring as a player in 1991, Savic turned his attention to coaching in the indoor game. Savic led the Kansas City Attack from 1992-1996, winning Coach of the Year honors for the 1994-1995 season while also serving as the team’s General Manager. Savic later coached the Kansas City Comets from 2000-2005.

Following a standout high school career in which he was named New Jersey Player of the Year, Vermes was a star forward and All-American at Rutgers University. After college, Vermes represented the United States in the 1988 Olympics in Seoul, Korea, and was named 1988 Chevrolet U.S. Male Soccer Athlete of the Year for his efforts.

In 2007 Savic switched to the outdoor game, joining Chivas USA as an assistant to then-head coach Preki before moving into the commentary booth for Kansas City matches in 2008 and 2009. Savic’s career as a commentator was cut short, however, when newly installed Manager Peter Vermes tabbed Savic to be part of his coaching staff late in the 2009 season.

Vermes was an integral part of a young U.S. team at the 1990 World Cup in Italy, where he nearly scored against the host Azzurri. It was the first time the U.S. had qualified for the World Cup in 40 years and set the stage for the progress of the U.S. National Team. In 1989 and 1990, Vermes became the first American to play in the Hungarian and Dutch First Divisions, playing for Raba ETO and FC Volendam, respectively. He later spent five years with Figueres of the Spanish Second Division.

Goalkeeper Coach | Alec Dufty Goalkeeper coach Alec Dufty is in his sixth season with Sporting Kansas City having been introduced to the organization as the Sporting KC II goalkeeper coach in the side’s inaugural season in 2016. In his first season working with Sporting KC’s goalkeepers, starting goalkeeper Tim Melia enjoyed a record-breaking season where he was named the 2017 MLS Goalkeeper of the Year.

For MLS’s inaugural season in 1996, Vermes served as captain of the New York/New Jersey MetroStars. In 1997, he was traded to the Colorado Rapids for current Sporting KC Assistant Coach Kerry Zavagnin and played in Denver through the 1999 season, leading the Rapids to the 1997 MLS Cup Final. Vermes joined Kansas City in 2000 for what would be the most successful season of his MLS career. During his first year in Kansas City, he anchored one of the best defenses in league history and won MLS Defender of the Year honors in helping lead the Wizards to the 2000 MLS Cup Championship. He retired in 2002 after appearing in 209 MLS matches (including playoffs) and playing more than 18,000 minutes. In 2013, Vermes was inducted into the National Soccer Hall of Fame. Year

A former MLS player, Dufty began his playing career with the New York Red Bulls in 2009, making one appearance before joining the MLS reserve goalkeeper pool. Sporting Kansas City signed French center back Nicolas Isimat-Mirin ahead of the 2021 MLS season. Isimat has played over 250 professional matches since 2010, featuring in the top divisions of France, the Netherlands and Turkey. He has logged 93 appearances each in France’s Ligue 1 and the Dutch Eredivisie, where he won three league titles as an integral member of PSV Eindhoven. Born in the Paris suburb of Meudon, Isimat competed in the famous Clairefontaine youth academy from 2004-2007 before continuing his development at Rennes and Valenciennes. He began his professional career as an 18-year-old in 2010 and spent the next three seasons as a regular starter for Valenciennes. Isimat-Mirin landed a transfer to French title contender Monaco, where he played 11 matches for the club in all competitions during the 2013-14 season.

In 2014, Isimat was loaned from Monaco to PSV Eindhoven. In his first Eredivisie season, he helped PSV win the league title by a 17-point margin, leading to PSV acquiring the defender on a permanent transfer ahead of the 2015-16 campaign. He appeared in 26 matches as PSV captured another Eredivisie title. Isimat and PSV won their third title in four years in 2017-2018. In early 2019, Isimat joined Besiktas in Turkey, starting 14 matches during the latter half of the season. For the 2019-20 campaign, the defender was loaned back to Ligue 1 for a stint with Toulouse, making 16 starts. Isimat represented France as a U-20 and U-21 youth international and notably featured during 2013 UEFA European U-21 Championship qualifying. He struck a center back partnership alongside future World Cup winner Raphael Varane as France finished atop their qualifying group.

Sporting Kansas City announced in January 2020 that the club had acquired central midfielder Gadi Kinda on a one-year loan from Israeli Premier League side Beitar Jerusalem. Sporting made the loan move permanent ahead of the 2021 season. Kinda has played over 200 matches in Israel since turning professional in 2011 at age 17. He starred as one of the Israeli Premier League’s best players during the first half of the 2019-20 season.

He became a regular starter for Ashdod during the 2013-2014 campaign, notably scoring his first top-fight goal in a 3-2 defeat of Israeli giants Maccabi Haifa in September 2013. Ashdod spent the 2015-16 season in Israel’s second division, but a strong bounce-back culminated with a Liga Leumit title as Kinda earned 27 appearances and helped his team finish atop the standings. Ashdod’s promotion saw Kinda tally seven goals and seven assists over the next two and a half seasons before his transfer to Beitar Jerusalem.

Born in Ethiopia and raised in Israel, Kinda joined Beitar Jerusalem in February 2019 and started 30 of 31 appearances in all competitions. Kinda spent the first seven and a half years of his professional career at FC Ashdod. He developed as a youth in his hometown club’s academy prior to landing an top-flight debut in September 2011 as a 17-year-old.

Kinda has five caps for the senior Israeli National Team, making his debut on June 5, 2021 when he scored the final goal in a 3-1 friendly win over Montenegro. He previously represented Israel at the U-18, U-19 and U-21 levels.
