After taking a pause in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the competition returns this year with four teams each from MLS and Liga MX facing off with the hopes of lifting the trophy in the final in Las Vegas on Sept. 22, 2021. QUALIFICATION Qualification for the 2021 Leagues Cup was based on performances during each league’s regular season. WHAT’S AT STAKE The eight teams will be battling for a chance to lift the imposing Leagues Cup trophy, which weighs in at 22 pounds and measures approximately 16.5 inches in height. The trophy features stars, maple leaves and pre-Hispanic motifs, symbols representing the United States, Canada and Mexico respectively. It was designed by both leagues and produced by Mexican artisans. But perhaps even bigger than the trophy itself, the teams will be playing for bragging rights between MLS and Liga MX as the rivalry between the two top North American leagues continues to grow. Each MLS team taking part in the 2021 tournament will feature a player who previously competed for a Liga MX club.

SPORTING KANSAS CITY NEWS AND NOTES
HEAVY ROTATION IN COLORADO
Sporting KC concluded a solid road swing this past week, picking up four points after defeating LAFC 4-1 on Wednesday night before grinding out a 0-0 draw with the Colorado Rapids on Saturday evening. Next on the horizon for Sporting (10-4-4, 34 pts.) is a return to international play for the first time since April 2019 when the team hosts to Liga MX outfit Club Leon at Children’s Mercy Park on Tuesday night.
Sporting KC rotated heavily in the past weekend’s 0-0 draw on the road against the Colorado Rapids. Rolling with a 3-5-2 formation that was implemented just hours before the match, several players saw their first significant minutes of the season. At wing-back, Jaylin Lindsey stepped in having played scarce minutes since suffering a hamstring injury in late June, while Roberto Puncec made his second start as one of the team’s three center backs. Left wing back Amadou Dia also made his first start of 2021.
Sporting’s ability to keep a clean sheet at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park on Saturday night was particularly impressive, seeing as the Rapids, who trail first-place Sporting by only six points in the standings with two games in hand, had scored in each of their previous 32 regular season home matches. That was the longest active streak in MLS and the fifth longest in league history.
The midfield was familiar, as veteran trio Roger Espinoza, Gadi Kinda and Remi Walter patrolled the field. Up front, a pair of SKC Academy products earned a runout, as Wilson Harris started for the second time this year, while Grayson Barber made his MLS debut.
SPORTING KC SIGNS 25-YEAR-OLD MIDFIELDER JOSE MAURI
The longest active home scoring streak in MLS now belongs to Sporting Kansas City. Vermes’ side has scored in 24 consecutive regular season home games dating back to Aug. 10, 2019. LAFC ranks second on the list with 18, followed by New York City FC with 14. No other clubs are on active home scoring streaks longer than eight matches.
Last Thursday, Sporting Kansas City announced that the club has signed 25-year-old Argentine-Italian midfielder Jose Mauri. Mauri has signed an MLS contract through the 2022 season with an option for 2023. He will occupy an international spot on Sporting’s roster pending receipt of his International Transfer Certificate and P1 visa.
The 0-0 draw on Saturday also marked Sporting’s first goalless draw in the regular season since June 9, 2018 - a period of well over three years. From June 23, 2018, to Aug. 4, 2021, Sporting went 91 straight regular season matches without a 0-0 tie. That’s the longest run in club history since the dawn of Major League Soccer’s non-shootout era in 2000. The second longest was a period of 48 straight games from May 7, 2005, to July 29, 2006.
Mauri, who holds dual citizenship in Argentina and Italy, boasts six seasons of top-flight experience in the Italian Serie A, where he competed for Parma, Empoli and European giants AC Milan from 2013-2019. He arrives in Kansas City after a two-year stint with Argentine Primera Division club Talleres de Cordoba. A versatile central midfielder, Mauri moved from his native Argentina to Italy in 2012 to join Parma’s youth ranks and earned his senior team debut for the club at age 17 before enjoyed a breakthrough season in 2014-15. Mauri’s standout performances with Parma prompted AC Milan to sign the player ahead of the 2015-16 season. The 2016-17 campaign saw Mauri join Empoli on loan before returning to Milan shortly after his 21st birthday and spent each of the next two seasons with the Rossoneri. Following his spell at Milan, Mauri joined Argentine first division side Talleres in September 2019.
BACK IN THE SWING OF INTERNATIONAL COMPETITION
Sporting Kansas City is set to play in their first continental competition since April 2019 when the team plays host to Liga MX side Club Leon at Children’s Mercy Park in the Leagues Cup Quarterfinals on Tuesday night. Sporting last partook in international play in the 2019 Concacaf Champions League, advancing all the way to the Semifinals before suffering an unceremonious 10-2 aggregate defeat to eventual champions C.F. Monterrey over two legs.
Born and raised in Realico, Argentina, Mauri is of Italian descent and represented Italy at the U-16, U-17 and U-21 youth international levels. He featured in 2013 UEFA European Under-17 Championship qualifying and was later selected to Italy’s squad for 2017 UEFA European Under-21 Championship qualifying.
The result against Monterrey soured what was a positive tournament for Sporting KC, who had dominated Liga MX team Toluca in the Round of 16, winning 5-0 on aggregate, before dumping Panamanian Cinderella story CA Independiente out of the tournament by a 5-2 aggregate scoreline in the Quarterfinals.
SKC TRANSFERS BUSIO TO VENEZIA FC IN SERIE A
Sporting Kansas City announced on last Thursday that the club has transferred 19-yearold midfielder Gianluca Busio to Venezia FC in the Italian Serie A, pending a physical and personal terms. Busio has joined Venezia in a club-record deal after spending five seasons in Kansas City.
Sporting has seen a lot of change since that fateful 2019 CCL run, highlighted by the fact that only 10 of the 28 players on Sporting’s roster for the Semifinal defeat still remain on the team (goalkeeper Tim Melia, defenders Andreu Fontas, Jaylin Lindsey, Graham Smith and Graham Zusi, midfielders Roger Espinoza and Ilie Sanchez, and forwards Tyler Freeman, Johnny Russell and Daniel Salloi).
Busio has recorded eight goals and nine assists in 70 appearances for Sporting across all competitions as one of the top teenagers in American soccer. The Greensboro, North Carolina, native joined the Sporting Kansas City Academy in 2016 and signed a Homegrown Player contract with the club at age 15 in August 2017. He earned his MLS debut as a 16-year-old in July 2018 and went on to become the second youngest player in MLS history to notch an assist and score a goal in his first full season.
Club Leon began their 2021 Apertura campaign in late July and has posted a 2-1-0 record to date, winning twice on the bounce to rebound from a 4-0 thrashing by Pachuca in their season opener on July 24. Leon are eight-time Liga MX champions, winning the competition in 1948, 1949, 1952, 1956, 1992, the Apertura in 2013, the Clausura in 2014, and the Apertura in 2020.
Busio was named to the United States Men’s National Team for the first time this summer, featuring in all six Concacaf Gold Cup matches and starting four as the Americans claimed their seventh tournament title. Busio previously represented the United States at the U-15 through U-20 levels and was named a finalist for U.S. Soccer Young Player of the Year in 2019 after taking Best XI honors with five goals at the 2019 Concacaf U-17 Championship and scoring at the 2019 FIFA U-17 World Cup in Brazil.
MELIA HEROICS PRESERVES POINT ON THE ROAD
While the stat sheet might not make for the most glamorous reading, Sporting Kansas City goalkeeper Tim Melia’s three saves on Saturday night against the Colorado Rapids at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park were worth their weight in gold as Sporting grinded out a result with a much-rotated lineup.
POSTGAME PV
Melia denied Mark-Anthony Kaye midway through the first half before producing a splendid save with his feet to prevent Jack Price from giving the hosts the lead on the stroke of halftime. Melia produced another brilliant stop to tip Diego Rubio’s header over the bar in the second half, but his best contribution went unnoticed by the referees as a goal kick was awarded despite Melia getting the slightest touch on Jonathan Lewis’ goal-bound effort in the 73rd minute.
On the road result in Colorado: “A massive, massive point. We kind of invoked the game plan that played itself out. We were trying to steal one in the second half but, honestly, we didn’t have the legs to be able to do it. Alan (Pulido) almost put that one away. It was actually a very inventive and creative play with the shot that he got off. It’s a massive point for us. I think everybody who came on the field left their heart on the field and gave everything they had. From that perspective, it’s great. That’s a big point for us on the road. It’s not easy to get points on the road and that’s another good point on the road.”
Despite the result marking just Melia’s third shutout of the season, his 1.00 goals against average is tied for the fifth-best in MLS among goalkeepers to have made at least 10 appearances in 2021.
On the team’s defensive performance: “Timmy was awesome. Timmy made some (great saves), which you hope that your goalkeeper can do in a game like this where we were banged up and not necessarily on in different aspects of our game. Timmy came up with some incredible saves to really keep us in the game. It’s one of those things where sometimes we play at home and the goalkeeper on the other team is just on fire. Timmy was on fire. That was huge for us. I thought the guys fought for every ball in the box. They really did. They were alert. They were throwing their bodies. They were throwing whatever they could in front of it. And if it didn’t happen, Timmy was there to make the save.”

Sporting KC Game Notes | August 10, 2021 vs. Club Leon | SportingKC.com/Game-Notes Manager & Sporting Director | Peter Vermes
Assistant Coach | Kerry Zavagnin Assistant Coach Kerry Zavagnin first joined Kansas City in 2000 as a holding midfielder and was an integral part of the club’s midfield for the next nine seasons, during which time he helped lead the Wizards to MLS Cup (2000) and U.S. Open Cup (2004) Championships. He was named to the MLS All-Star team and the Best XI in 2004. Zavagnin’s primary duties as an assistant include scouting, developing Sporting Kansas City’s younger players, breaking down film and assisting with training sessions, among others.
Peter Vermes is in his 13th season as Sporting Kansas City Manager in 2021 and is the longest-tenured active head coach in MLS. He is the team’s longest-serving manager and his 200 coaching victories in all competitions are the most club history. During his tenure, he has won four major trophies – the 2012, 2015 and 2017 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cups and the 2013 MLS Cup championship – and finished atop the Eastern Conference regularseason standings in 2011 and 2012, as well as the Western Conference in 2018 and 2020. His three U.S. Open Cup championships are the third most in Open Cup history. He is the first coach in club history to lead Sporting KC to eight straight postseason appearances, as well as the only person to ever win the MLS Cup as both a player and a coach with the same team. His 165 regular-season wins top the club’s all-time chart and rank fifth most in MLS history. He passed his former coach Bob Gansler as the winningest manager in team history with a 3-1 win over Real Salt Lake on Aug. 12, 2015, his 109th victory in all competitions.
He started his professional career with the New York/New Jersey MetroStars, where he played in 39 games over two seasons. After spending one season with the Lehigh Valley Steam (USL-1), Zavagnin came to Kansas City in 2000. He played 237 games (228 starts) and logged 20,516 minutes for Kansas City, setting team records in both categories before both were overtaken by Matt Besler early in 2018. He scored eight goals and added 22 assists in his nine seasons in Kansas City blue. Zavagnin was named Team Defender of the Year in 2001.
On August 4, 2018, Vermes coached his 302nd MLS regular-season game with Sporting KC, becoming the league’s all-time leader in games coached for one club. He was named the first-ever MLS Sporting Executive of the Year by his peers in 2018. Vermes has coached 459 total games during his Kansas City coaching career, most in club history.
On top of his club success in Kansas City, Zavagnin also appeared 21 times for the United States Men’s National Team. He recorded one assist for the U.S., who went 15-2-4 when Zavagnin featured. He married his wife Mirriam prior to the 2009 season, when he became an assistant coach at the club.
With over 13 years of service at Sporting KC, Vermes is one of the longest serving managers in world soccer. Among all 18 leagues with an average attendance of 10,000+, Vermes ranks second, only behind 2. Bundesliga side FC Heidenheim’s Frank Schmidt (Sept. 17, 2007 – present). Among the top 51 leagues in the world as denoted by the CIES Football Observatory, Vermes’ tenure at Sporting KC ranks as the eighth longest active run.
Assistant Coach | Zoran Savic Assistant Coach Zoran Savic joined Sporting Kansas City late in the 2009 season after a 30-year career at all levels of the game in the United States. A native of Gornji Milanovac, Yugoslavia, Savic began his journey through American soccer with the Buffalo Stallions of the Major Indoor Soccer League in 1980. Savic would go on to star for several MISL teams, with his most prosperous period coming with the Kansas City Comets, with whom he scored 70 goals in just over 100 appearances from 1982-1984.
Vermes oversees all soccer operations for Sporting KC, including the active roster, Sporting Kansas City II (USL Championship) and the Sporting KC Academy. Vermes entered MLS ahead of its inaugural season in 1996 and retired from the league in 2002, closing out his playing career in Kansas City after stints with the New York/New Jersey MetroStars and Colorado Rapids.
After retiring as a player in 1991, Savic turned his attention to coaching in the indoor game. Savic led the Kansas City Attack from 1992-1996, winning Coach of the Year honors for the 1994-1995 season while also serving as the team’s General Manager. Savic later coached the Kansas City Comets from 2000-2005.
Following a standout high school career in which he was named New Jersey Player of the Year, Vermes was a star forward and All-American at Rutgers University. After college, Vermes represented the United States in the 1988 Olympics in Seoul, Korea, and was named 1988 Chevrolet U.S. Male Soccer Athlete of the Year for his efforts.
In 2007 Savic switched to the outdoor game, joining Chivas USA as an assistant to then-head coach Preki before moving into the commentary booth for Kansas City matches in 2008 and 2009. Savic’s career as a commentator was cut short, however, when newly installed Manager Peter Vermes tabbed Savic to be part of his coaching staff late in the 2009 season.
Vermes was an integral part of a young U.S. team at the 1990 World Cup in Italy, where he nearly scored against the host Azzurri. It was the first time the U.S. had qualified for the World Cup in 40 years and set the stage for the progress of the U.S. National Team. In 1989 and 1990, Vermes became the first American to play in the Hungarian and Dutch First Divisions, playing for Raba ETO and FC Volendam, respectively. He later spent five years with Figueres of the Spanish Second Division.
Goalkeeper Coach | Alec Dufty Goalkeeper coach Alec Dufty is in his fifth season with Sporting Kansas City having been introduced to the organization as the Sporting KC II goalkeeper coach in the side’s inaugural season in 2016. In his first season working with Sporting KC’s goalkeepers, starting goalkeeper Tim Melia enjoyed a record-breaking season where he was named the 2017 MLS Goalkeeper of the Year.
For MLS’s inaugural season in 1996, Vermes served as captain of the New York/New Jersey MetroStars. In 1997, he was traded to the Colorado Rapids for current Sporting KC Assistant Coach Kerry Zavagnin and played in Denver through the 1999 season, leading the Rapids to the 1997 MLS Cup Final. Vermes joined Kansas City in 2000 for what would be the most successful season of his MLS career. During his first year in Kansas City, he anchored one of the best defenses in league history and won MLS Defender of the Year honors in helping lead the Wizards to the 2000 MLS Cup Championship. He retired in 2002 after appearing in 209 MLS matches (including playoffs) and playing more than 18,000 minutes. In 2013, Vermes was inducted into the National Soccer Hall of Fame. Year
A former MLS player, Dufty began his playing career with the New York Red Bulls in 2009, making one appearance before joining the MLS reserve goalkeeper pool. In 2010, Dufty joined USSF D2 Pro League side AC St. Louis, making 30 appearances before returning to MLS with the Chicago Fire in late 2010. He announced his retirement at the conclusion of the 2011 season. Dufty then took to coaching, first working with Florida Gulf Coast University and then the University of Illinois at Chicago. In 2015, Dufty served as goalkeeper coach for Toronto FC II in their inaugural USL season.

His dozen goals - which included a run of 10 strikes in his final 11 appearances - equaled the league’s singleseason record for a teenager. After joining the SKC Academy in 2017, Harris inked his first professional contract for Sporting KC II the following year and ended the 2018 USL Championship campaign with three goals in 15 games. A native of Los Angeles, Harris had prolific stints in the Seattle Sounders FC Academy and Real SoCal Academy before moving to Kansas City. During the 2017-18 season, he led the Sporting KC U-19s with 18 goals in 17 league appearances. On the international stage, Harris has represented the United States at the U-16, U-18 and U-20 levels.

Height: 5-7 Weight: 135 Birthday: 6/8/1998 Hometown: Nashville, Tennessee Last Club: Sporting Kansas City II (USL) Acquired: Signed as Homegrown on 8/30/2019 Sporting Kansas City signed Felipe Hernandez as a Homegrown Player in late August 2019, making him the 12th Homegrown Player in club history and one of 13 on the current roster, joining Gianluca Busio, Cam Duke, Tyler Freeman, Jaylin Lindsey, Daniel Salloi, Wilson Harris, John Pulskamp, Ozzie Cisneros, Grayson Barber, Brooks Thompson, Kaveh Rad and Kayden Pierre.
Born in Ibague, Colombia, Hernandez grew up in Nashville, Tennessee, and played for Sporting Nashville Heroes, a former Academy Affiliate. He moved to Kansas City in the summer of 2014 to join the Academy. At age 16, Hernandez earned a preseason training stint with Sporting KC in January 2015, before signing an Academy contract with Sporting KC II in August 2016, two months prior to earning Bob Gansler Academy Player of the Year honors that then led to a professional SKC II contract in early 2017.
Hernandez is the first Sporting player to progress from an Academy Affiliate club to the SKC Academy to Sporting KC II before signing with the senior team. His acquisition follows a breakout season in the USL Championship, where he started 24 of 26 appearances, scored a team-best eight goals and recorded four assists. In three seasons with SPR, Hernandez amassed 13 goals and 12 assists across 85 matches.
On the international stage, Hernandez played for the U.S. U-19 National Team for the first time in August 2016 for the Stevan Vilotic-Cele Tournament in Serbia. The following April, he ventured to London for his first training camp with the U.S. U-20s.

Sporting Kansas City signed French center back Nicolas Isimat-Mirin ahead of the 2021 MLS season. Isimat has played over 250 professional matches since 2010, featuring in the top divisions of France, the Netherlands and Turkey. He has logged 93 appearances each in France’s Ligue 1 and the Dutch Eredivisie, where he won three league titles as an integral member of PSV Eindhoven. Born in the Paris suburb of Meudon, Isimat competed in the famous Clairefontaine youth academy from 2004-2007 before continuing his development at Rennes and Valenciennes. He began his professional career as an 18-year-old in 2010 and spent the next three seasons as a regular starter for Valenciennes. Isimat-Mirin landed a transfer to French title contender Monaco, where he played 11 matches for the club in all competitions during the 2013-14 season.
In 2014, Isimat was loaned from Monaco to PSV Eindhoven. In his first Eredivisie season, he helped PSV win the league title by a 17-point margin, leading to PSV acquiring the defender on a permanent transfer ahead of the 2015-16 campaign. He appeared in 26 matches as PSV captured another Eredivisie title. Isimat and PSV won their third title in four years in 2017-2018. In early 2019, Isimat joined Besiktas in Turkey, starting 14 matches during the latter half of the season. For the 2019-20 campaign, the defender was loaned back to Ligue 1 for a stint with Toulouse, making 16 starts. Isimat represented France as a U-20 and U-21 youth international and notably featured during 2013 UEFA European U-21 Championship qualifying. He struck a center back partnership alongside future World Cup winner Raphael Varane as France finished atop their qualifying group.

Sporting Kansas City announced in January 2020 that the club had acquired central midfielder Gadi Kinda on a one-year loan from Israeli Premier League side Beitar Jerusalem. Sporting made the loan move permanent ahead of the 2021 season. Kinda has played over 200 matches in Israel since turning professional in 2011 at age 17. He starred as one of the Israeli Premier League’s best players during the first half of the 2019-20 season.
He became a regular starter for Ashdod during the 2013-2014 campaign, notably scoring his first top-fight goal in a 3-2 defeat of Israeli giants Maccabi Haifa in September 2013. Ashdod spent the 2015-16 season in Israel’s second division, but a strong bounce-back culminated with a Liga Leumit title as Kinda earned 27 appearances and helped his team finish atop the standings. Ashdod’s promotion saw Kinda tally seven goals and seven assists over the next two and a half seasons before his transfer to Beitar Jerusalem.
Born in Ethiopia and raised in Israel, Kinda joined Beitar Jerusalem in February 2019 and started 30 of 31 appearances in all competitions. Kinda spent the first seven and a half years of his professional career at FC Ashdod. He developed as a youth in his hometown club’s academy prior to landing an top-flight debut in September 2011 as a 17-year-old.
Kinda has two caps for the senior Israeli National Team, making his debut on June 5, 2021 when he scored the final goal in a 3-1 friendly win over Montenegro. He previously represented Israel at the U-18, U-19 and U-21 levels.
