MAYFLOWER MOUNTAIN RESORT The first new Utah ski resort in 40 years is coming to Park City in 2021! Known as Mayflower Mountain Resort, the 5,600-acre ski resort will be located on the backside of Deer Valley by the Deer Creek subdivision. It’s not known yet whether the resort will remain independent or become an extension of Deer Valley, but the plan does call for five to seven new lifts plus a large base area with bars, restaurants, retail, and the world’s largest ski beach. Nordic skiing and an ice skating rink are possible additions.

WHERE TO SKI WHEN YOU’RE NOT SKIING UTAH 4 Destinations to Visit This Winter By Jenny Willden

Sun Valley Lower College

Utahns know the Beehive State is America’s top ski destination, but that doesn’t mean we don’t ski other slopes from time to time. Thanks to reciprocal resort benefits on many season passes, it’s easier than ever to chase powder and ski FREE at resorts across the nation. Whether you’re planning a Christmas getaway or a January inversion escape, use your pass at these nearby ski destinations. Sun Valley, Idaho

Where to Stay: Hotel Ketchum- Expect modern rooms, delicious complimentary breakfast, heated outdoor pool and hot tub, plus a social lobby with games and a bar at Sun Valley's newest hotel. Pass Accepted: Epic Pass The Town: A hotbed for celebrity sightings, small-town Ketchum and surrounding Sun Valley are year-round recreation destinations with a slew of fantastic restaurants and bars. Come for the skiing; stay for the apres fun.

Find a rowdy vibe and local crowd at The Casino, a Western Main Street dive that’s been open for 80 years. Or keep it classy at Enoteca, a fancy Italian wine bar where wood-fired pizzas and hearty apps take center stage. To unwind after a ski day, take a short drive to Frenchman’s hot springs. It’s free to visit and located right on the river amidst a pine forest. The Skiing: Our Idaho neighbor was home to the world’s first chairlift and has long been known for its celebrity ski scene. Thanks to its recent partnership with the Epic Pass, passholders can ski multiple days here per season for free. Whether you’ve skied Sun Valley before or not, now’s the season to visit. Its expansion adds 380 acres of new bowls, trees, and chutes to the in-bound map and replaces the resort’s oldest chairlift, Cold Springs (#4), with a new high-speed detachable lift. The new chair provides easier access to Roundhouse restaurant where fondue and endless views await. Prefer groomers and gradual pitches? Ski the extended Lower Broadway run that’s now lined with efficient snowmaking guns.

Breckinridge, Colorado

Where to Stay: Gravity Haus- Enjoy ski-in/ ski-out access from Peak 9 at this all-new hotel with fitness and sports recovery center, Japanese-style onsen, super trampoline, duckpin bowling, a co-working space, and healthy fare at Cabin Juice. Pass Accepted: Epic Pass The Town: Affectionately called ‘Breck’ by locals, this charming 1850s mining town is beloved because it’s a real town adjacent to an incredible ski resort. Packed with preserved Victorian architecture, Breck boasts the largest historic district in Colorado, funky art, and top-notch dining with laid-back vibes. From the slopes, ski to town and après at RMU Tavern—Summit County’s first ski shop-bar combination. ¦¦¦

The Skiing: Home to North America's highest chairlift, the Imperial Express at 12,840 feet, Breck is a highalpine paradise with 40% of its terrain above treeline. Try steep classic like the Y Chutes or some of the resort’s best glade skiing at Ore Bucket. On powder days, find mindblowing snow on E.S.P. Get the local experience without the route finding Breck Snow Sculpture Championships with Breck Guides. They’ll show you the ins and outs of Breck's slopes while guiding you to hidden powder stashes and fun, steep chutes. Plus, these pro skiers can give you tips to improve your slope skills.

Jackson, Wyoming

Where to Stay: Hotel Terra- A slopeside, eco-built beauty, this hotel’s best perk is its outdoor hot tub and pool for relaxing after a ski day. Indulge in authentic Italian at the lobby’s Il Villagio Osteria restaurant. Or step outside into a winter wonderland: the resort’s series of carved ice sculptures. Passes Accepted: IKON Pass and Mountain Collective The Town: The town of Jackson is 12 miles away from the ski resort, but its Wild West vibes and delicious restaurants make it worth the drive. Stop by The Wort Hotel for country dancing or the Cowboy Bar to sip a drink from saddle bar seats. Slopeside Teton Village is where you’ll find ski-in lodging, the delicious (and packed) Teton Thai eatery, and famed après bar—The Mangy Moose.

Vail, Colorado

Where to Stay: Sonnenalp- This Bavarian-inspired ski chalet in the heart of Vail Village is just a 10-minute walk to the ski lifts. But location isn’t its only perk. Enjoy an included Europeanstyle breakfast buffet, warm cookies at turndown, and on-site Swiss fondue restaurant. Pass Accepted: Epic Pass The Town: Defined by chic (and heated) cobblestone streets, Vail Village is the antithesis to old mining town ski areas. Its shiny, modern buildings house art galleries, boutiques, and diverse restaurants spread through a pedestrian village linked to elegant, Bavarian-style Lionshead Village by free shuttle.

The Skiing: Offering over 2500 acres of incredible terrain favoring steep and deep runs on powder days, Jackson Hole is known by skiers who love to go big. Lower mountain runs tend toward the mellower, family-friendly side, but a 9-minute, 4000 vertical-foot ride up the iconic Aerial Tram will put your ski skills to the test. Stop first for a waffle at Corbet’s Cabin (located at 10,450 feet) then brave a run down Corbet’s Couloir—arguably the steepest and most famous run in North America. If couloirs aren’t your jam, ski other challenging, long runs leading all the way back to the base where you can take lap after lap on Jackson’s ‘Red Heli.’

When not exploring the Wasatch Mountains, you’ll find her traveling the world in search of tacos and outdoor adventures. Follow her on Twitter @jennywillden and Instagram @jlwillden.

The Skiing: Beyond the village, Vail is Colorado’s largest ski destination, offering legendary skiing in its Back Bowls, kneedeep powder skiing, and family-friendly terrain. Lift prices are astronomical, but the Epic Pass makes your tickets free! When you need a mid-day break, ski in to The 10th where you can ditch your ski boots, don slippers, and take in Gore Range views over a seriously elegant lunch. ¦¦¦

Ways to Winter with Littles Family-friendly Snow Season Adventures By Sarah Shebek

It’s true that kids are bad for some things: sleep, spontaneity, and sanity (sometimes). But they’re also great at making you slow down and appreciate the small things, like the magic of a snowy December day. Even though wrestling a toddler into a snowsuit and boots can be a formidable challenge, there’s nothing like experiencing the beauty of a white winter through the eyes of a child. The last two years, I’ve been mostly home with an infant, then a barely-walking baby. We got outside, sure, but excursions were limited to short hikes and walks in the neighborhood. Now that our son Parker is two, I’m looking forward to a winter filled with seasonal fun. There’s no guarantee he’ll love everything, but as anyone in Utah knows, if it’s going to be cold you might as well embrace it. Here are five activities I hope to enjoy with my toddler that are great for kids of all ages:

1. Exploring the Midway Ice Castles.

Although I pride myself in taking advantage of all sorts of different local attractions since I moved to Utah six years ago, the Ice Castles have eluded me. Maybe it’s for the best, since I think attending with a child is the best way to go. I can only imagine the look on Parker’s face when we pull into the parking lot and he gets his first look at the glowing frozen features. Two other perks? He can easily explore without us hauling around our stroller

2. Visiting Local Ski

Resorts. Babies and skiing

don’t mix, it’s true. But now that Parker is a bit older, we decided to spring for an Ikon Pass and take advantage of the Greatest Snow on Earth. While we’ll do the bulk of our skiing during the week while he’s at school, we plan to introduce Parker to Solitude and Brighton Resort on some sunny weekends.

Will he try out a pair of tiny skis? Potentially. Will he stand on the mini snowboard, complete with a tow rope, that we’ve been eying? Possibly. Will he wear a helmet either way? Absolutely. Let’s be real, probably most of our time will be spent in the lodge or near the bottom of the bunny hill. But getting out together is a start, and we hope with time that Parker will latch on to a winter sport, so we can all shred together. The best news of all: Brighton lets kids 10 and under ski free. If you decide to venture elsewhere, the Epic SchoolKids Utah pass gives kids Kindergarten-5th grade five free days of riding or skiing at Park City, and ¦¦¦

Ski Utah offers a passport full of free ski days for 5th and 6th graders. Alta’s Ski After 3 program is great for kids not ready for full days; it’s just $12 for beginner lift access from 3:00-4:30 p.m. Many of Utah’s resorts also start providing lessons once your little ripper turns three!

3. Riding the Heber Valley North Pole Express. Everything

about this experience seems perfect for families with smaller children. Trains, hot cocoa, chocolate chip cookies, music and even Santa Claus combine for a magical holiday experience. The 90-minute train ride travels to the “North Pole” and back until December 23—with both regular and first class tickets available. The above amenities are included in a train ticket, and prices start at $5 for toddlers two and under in the regular class. Snag your tickets at hebervalleyrr.org.

4. Sledding the Local Spots. Parker’s one and

only sled experience last winter began on a powdery hill at Liberty Park. We were afraid to let him get too much momentum, so he motored slowly down the slope a handful of times before he was ready to call it quits. This year, we’ll probably upgrade Photo courtesy of Brighton Ski Resort our sled from the flimsy plastic saucer to a sturdier, multi-person toboggan. Sledding is great because it’s free and can be done on almost any hill. We’ll definitely be returning to Liberty Park, but you

can also head to Sugar House Park, Lindsey Gardens in the Avenues, or up Big Cottonwood Canyon near Donut Falls trailhead.

5. Snowshoeing the

Mountain Trails. Hiking

with kids can be tricky. They’re often too big or squirmy to ride in a pack for long, but their little legs can’t handle long distances. Fortunately Parker will still ride in our hiking pack for short stretches, so I’m planning to take him on a couple snowshoe expeditions this winter. Older children can definitely handle their own snowshoes, and trails are plentiful throughout the Wasatch Front. We like to venture on the flattish section of road just past the seasonal gate up Millcreek Canyon. Nearby Bowman Fork is another excellent option, as long as you don’t mind an uphill workout at the start. And with enough snow, the Bonneville Shoreline Trail is a convenient option close to town. Once we both tire of walking, I pull out a warm drink for both of us to enjoy. Regardless of where you adventure this winter, be prepared for some unscripted explorations, toddler style. MEET WOODWARD PARK CITY Utah’s New Action Sports Resort By Connie Lewis

GO TUBING, SKATEBOARDING, SKIING, BMX RIDING, MOUNTAIN BIKING, JUMPING, TRAMPOLINING, AND PARKOUR PRACTICING ALL IN ONE WORLDCLASS VENUE AT THE NEW WOODWARD PARK CITY. OPENING IN DECEMBER, THIS FIRST-CLASS RESORT COMBINES WINTER AND SUMMER FUN INTO ONE YEAR-ROUND ACTION SPORT RESORT. WHAT’S A WOODWARD? Fifty years ago, the first Woodward opened in Woodward, Pennsylvania for gymnastics and summer camps. The brand has since expanded into winter and action sports and was acquired by Park City’s Powdr, an Adventure Lifestyle Company®, in 2010. Woodward Park City will become its 5th Woodward facility and flagship location. Powdr had long wanted to develop its Gorgoza Tubing Park into a world-class resort and broke ground on the Woodward project in September 2018. And it won’t disappoint; they’re insisting on nothing but the best for the location’s design, materials, and environmental impact. Senior Marketing Manager Tucker Norred says, “Building in Powdr’s backyard, the family-owned business took pride in bringing a community center and a place to gather to Park City.” ACTION SPORTS FOR ALL Slated to be open 365 days a year from 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., Woodward Park City features beginning skiing and snowboarding with magic carpets and lifts to the summit in winter. Plus tubing with improved indoor facilities for hot chocolate and indoor bathrooms replacing the yurts. “Utilizing 125 acres, the facility has terrain-based learning features. We can accommodate everyone from never-evers to Olympic hopefuls,” Tucker says. Woodward partnered with Olympic Snowboard champion, Danny Davis, to design the Peace Park nonlinear terrain run. This ski area is a network of terrain zones that offer on-mountain experiences for all ages and abilities. There are base learning zones for 20«

beginners, a large freestyle zone for experts, and everything in between. The Peace Park is a progression-based experience that guides athletes through confidence-building development. Red’s Backyard, inspired by Olympic Gold Medalist Red Gerard’s backyard rail garden, offers freestyle terrain for skiing and snowboarding. Red’s Backyard is a hike-style zone where enthusiasts can get started at the first sign of snow. With rails of varying difficulty, it’s a perfect place to practice rail tricks. “Our outdoor space is smaller than some resorts, but we utilize every square inch of space, with various levels of ski trails, two skateboard parks, and the longest tubing lanes in Utah,” Tucker says. Programs will include day camps, private lessons, and mini camps where students can be dropped off for learning experiences, including ski lessons in the winter and mountain biking in the summer. Inside the 70,000-square-foot action sports training facility you’ll find a concrete skate park, acrobatic zone with a spring floor, different-sized pads, wedges, and roll pads, plus indoor parkour room, a rod floor and tumble track, along with five different fly bed trampolines surrounded by a foam pit. Parkour, trampoline, scooters, skateboard, wheeled ski, and parkboards can all be experienced inside before moving outside in summertime to try them on the hill, trails, and park spaces. Woodward’s indoor space includes rental and retail shops, café, bar, and cafeteria. Windows look directly into activity zones inside and out so you can keep an eye on all the action. GRAND OPENING Though Woodward Park City has not set a firm opening date, the hope is for it to be fully operational in December. The Grand Opening Party is set for December 14 and is open to all. “It will be a big celebration,” says Tucker, “There will be discounted entry for people to try out a bounce session on the trampolines, tubing session, and a tour. All ticket proceeds that day will go to a local non-profit.” If you can’t wait to join the fun, Woodward memberships are now available at experience.woodwardparkcity.com for $100 a month. ¦¦¦

Tucker is proud of the beautiful facility Woodward is building, and believes the heart of the resort will be the people who work there. “We pride ourselves on passionate employees who can’t wait to provide a quality experience for all, whether beginner or expert.” Its progressive style, along with this passionate and knowledgeable staff, allows participants to move safely from level to level, practice a skill, or learn something new. Whether you’re a professional training for competition, lifelong zealot, or brand new beginner, Woodward Park City is for everybody.

Winter Weekend Getaway Snow Brings a Monstrosity of Fun to Bear Lake By Julia Partain

OKAY, I’M GOING TO FILL YOU IN ON A LITTLE SECRET. BEAR LAKE, APTLY REFERRED TO AS THE “CARRIBBEAN OF THE ROCKIES,” OFFERS MORE THAN JUST SUMMERTIME ADVENTURES FILLED WITH RASPBERRY SHAKES, SANDCASTLES, AND TURQUOISE BLUE WATER...IT’S A YEAR-ROUND RECREATION MECCA BOASTING OPPORTUNITIES FOR ANY OUTDOOR ENTHUSIAST! Spanning the border of Utah and Idaho, this freshwater lake is 20 miles long, eight miles wide, and 208 feet deep. With its central location, the Bear Lake valley is a convenient spot to get to— roughly a two-hour drive from Salt Lake City or just under an hour from Logan. SKI IT TO BELIEVE IT After the snow flies, swap the water skis for a pair of alpines and shred northern Utah’s Beaver Mountain Ski Resort (skithebeav. com). Located on Highway 89 in Logan Canyon (26 miles east of Logan and 15 miles west of Garden City), this family-owned ski area offers 828 acres for downhill skiing, snowboarding and night skiing. Two terrain parks and 48 runs attract skiers and riders of all ages and abilities. Equipped with a rental shop, day lodge, and snowsports school, ‘The Beav’ provides the perfect playground for sampling Utah’s pristine powder. I will let you in on another secret... short lift lines and ridiculously affordable pricing sets this gem apart from other major resorts in the state. If cross-country skiing is your jam, the mountains surrounding Bear Lake provide miles of stunning alpine views and trails to explore. Beaver Bottoms and Sink Hollow, located below Beaver Mountain Ski Resort, offer groomed classic and skate cross-country tracks along with flat and gently sloped scenic trails. Snowshoers also enjoy getting back into nature on these routes. For updated trail 22«

grooming information, visit nordicunited.org. Garden City’s golf course also invites nordic skiers to skate ski on its nine-hole course during snowy months. RIDE THE SINKS About 10 minutes west of Bear Lake, there’s a wide-open bowl known as the “Sinks.” The large indentation in the earth created by a natural sinkhole is the best spot in all of Cache Valley for sledding, snow tubing, and playing in the snow. Bundle up and bring an extra thermos of hot cocoa...it’s also been labeled as the coldest place in Utah. GONE FISHING When the lake freezes over (which happens four out of five years), anglers come from miles around to try their luck catching cutthroat, lake trout, rainbow trout, and most notably, the Bonneville Cisco. This species of fish cannot be found anywhere else in the world. The January spawning run of the Bonneville Cisco draws fishing enthusiasts who dip nets to capture the small swift fish. If spending time on the ice is not your cup of tea, local fishing ponds give easy access for anglers of any size and ability who wish to drop a line. Garden City Pond, located in the heart of the Rich County town, is stocked with rainbow trout and cutthroat. The Montpelier Rearing Pond is tucked into a scenic high desert canyon at 6,500 feet in the hills east of Montpelier, Idaho and is stocked with rainbow trout. TAKE THE PLUNGE Now imagine combining these activities into one monster-sized event...welcome to the Bear Lake Monster Winterfest! Named after the legendary creature that is rumored to be lurking in the lake, the 11th annual family-friendly winter event is held on January 24-26, 2020 and features the Monster Plunge, Cisco Disco, chili cookoff, winter sports demos, expos, and more. ¦¦¦

The weekend kicks off with a winter sports demo complete with fat-tire biking, snowshoeing, and tubing at the Logan Canyon Sinks area. That evening, FREE ice skating, hot cocoa, games, and karaoke greet guests at the Sunrise Resort and Event Center. Bundle up for the next day’s cool adventures. On Saturday, January 25, anglers wade waist-deep in the icy Cisco Beach water or fish through the ice to dip net for the Bonneville Cisco. The Monster Cisco Tournament follows, where entrants vie for the BIGGEST little Cisco fish. Go jump in the lake...literally. The event’s most anticipated activity is the Bear Lake Monster Plunge, held in the Bear Lake State Park Marina. The plunge is designed to raise funds for the Common Ground Outdoor Adventures organization based in Logan, Utah, where they provide life-enhancing outdoor recreational opportunities for youth and adults with disabilities. What would it take to make you jump in a frozen lake? $30, a costume (which is highly encouraged), and a vat of hot cocoa sounds about right. Plus, you get a really cool hoodie and bragging rights that shows you braved the cold for a great cause. Get the full scoop at bearlakemonsterwinterfest.com. Now that I’ve filled you in on my little secret, go ahead and share it: Bear Lake should be on your winter fun bucket list.

HOW TO AVOID THE RED-FACED BLUES Utah’s Dry Air Is a Blessing for Skiing, But Hard On Your Skin By Suzie Dundas

Utahns know that they have some of the best snow in the world. And what causes that fluffy, weightless powder to fall with such regularity? Easy: moisture (or the lack of it, actually.) Utah has some of the driest air in the country, ranking as the eighth driest state in the U.S. There’s less humidity in Utah than in the Sahara Desert, which is why Utah skiers rarely have to worry about being weighed down by heavy, wet snow. But what’s good for the slopes isn’t good for the skin, as anyone who’s spent time outdoors in the winter knows. Dry air can lead to severe skin woes likely to hamper your outdoor fun. Here are four of the most common conditions caused by dry air, and how to combat them and keep your skin stay healthy all winter long. Dry Skin: This one’s a no-brainer. Skin gets dehydrated in dry air, which is why you may find your skin itching and even cracking after a few days on the slopes. Fortunately, a few preventative steps can help avoid the issue.

need to put on a thick coat to get the SPF value promised. Windburn: It’s no secret that whipping winds can leave your face feeling windburned and raw. Being windburned feels a lot like being sunburned and comes with a red-faced look that isn’t likely to help you pick up a new ski buddy during après. Avoid windburn by wearing a light Buff or balaclava and using moisturizers and gentle products, like aloe, to relieve any pain or redness after a day spent outdoors. Sunscreen can also help prevent windburn; in fact, many skin experts think the two may be different versions of the same epidermal injury. And don’t think you need to be flying down the slopes at 30 MPH to get windburn. Runners and snowshoers can experience it just as severely as backcountry skiers and riders. Dry eyes, throat, and lips: All three are subject to becoming extra dry in the winter, and a sore throat can lead to colds and nasal issues. Here’s how to fight each one:

• Dry lips: Buy lip balm or chapstick with SPF 15 or more in bulk.

Put one in every jacket pocket you have and—this is important— use it all the time, even when you don’t feel like your lips are dry. Beeswax alternatives work well, too. If your lips become chapped, gentle exfoliants and coconut oil can speed up the healing process.

• Use a humidifier: The average person spends around seven

to eight hours a night sleeping, so why not use that time to help your skin? Running a humidifier while you sleep exposes your skin to at least a few hours of proper moisture, which can help negate the effects of spending the next nine hours on the slopes.

• Dry eyes: Aside from using eye drops, try to protect your eyes whenever possible. That means sunglasses even when it’s overcast and goggles while skiing or riding.

• Chug, chug, chug: Not thirsty? Too bad. Forcing yourself to consume more water than usual helps replace the moisture your skin loses while outdoors. You may not feel as thirsty in cold weather, but you should still drink at least as much as you do on a typical summer day. Most experts recommend 64 ounces a day, so consider generously increasing that number on days where you’re spending hours doing outdoor cardio like skiing or snowshoeing.

• Dry throat: A dry throat can be a major issue as your throat

connects to your entire nasopharyngeal system. A dry throat will quickly lead to dry eyes and a dry nose, mimicking the symptoms of a cold. Avoid it by drinking lots of water, investing in the aforementioned humidifier, and using calming throat sprays. Ginger and sore throat teas can also help once you realize you’re dehydrated. If you’re the type of person who looks forward to aprèsski afternoons, try to remember to drink one glass of water for every beer to help stay hydrated, especially at higher elevations.

Sunburn: Winter sunburns can often be more painful than summer sunburns; it’s never fun to pull a tight baselayer on over burned skin. Unfortunately, winter sunburn is more common than most people realize. Snow is extremely reflective, and since many people don’t think to apply sunscreen before skiing, it doesn’t take long to gain a goggle tan. Anyone serious about skiing knows that damaging your skin is no way to start the season, so be sure to apply sunscreen to any exposed part of your body on the slopes. Reapply every two hours and potentially more often if you’re sweating in the backcountry. Remember that SPF ratings are determined based on people wearing a lot of sunscreen. You 26«

Can Exercise Ward Off Cold and Flu Symptoms? By Ben Montgomery

AS COLD AND FLU SEASON APPROACHES, SO DOES THE SEASON OF ILLNESS PREVENTION. From getting flu shots to adding a little extra Vitamin C to our diets, prevention often becomes a focus at this time of year for those concerned with getting sick, missing work and/or school, and optimizing their holiday joy. It’s based on this mindset that medical professionals like Logan physical therapist Greg Schroeder get some version of this question: Can exercise boost my immune system? According to Schroeder, the answer is broader than the question itself. “In general, healthy living is the true key to building and maintaining a strong immune system, and regular exercise is definitely an important component of this,” says Schroeder, owner of Back at Work Physical Therapy in Logan, Clearfield, and Tremonton. “Some studies have shown that exercise on its own can play a role in reducing the length and intensity of colds and flu,” Schroeder adds. “But, you can’t discount the long-lasting, immune-boosting benefits of other habits like eating right, staying hydrated, getting plenty of sleep, and reducing stress.” Research supporting exercise as an immune booster often points to many benefits inherent in regular fitness routines as factors that also help ward off illness: weight management, lower blood pressure, reduction in stress, and improved circulation.

back on the length and intensity of their exercise routine just to be on the safe side,” Schroeder says. “Keep getting your exercise, but also take greater care to make sure you’re staying hydrated, eating well, and giving your body time to recover.” If you do get sick? According to advice from the Mayo Clinic, that doesn’t necessarily mean you can’t continue to exercise. They offer the following two rules of thumb: THE NECK RULE: If you catch a cold and find that all the symptoms are concentrated above the neck (i.e., nasal congestion, runny nose, sneezing, and/or a minor sore throat), it’s typically OK to exercise. Simply reduce your intensity. Instead of going for a jog, for instance, opt to go for a walk. In contrast, if you find that you’re experiencing symptoms below the neck—things like a congested chest, a hacking cough, or an upset stomach— it’s best to not exercise at all. THE FEVER RULE: Also, if you have a fever or are experiencing muscle aches and fatigue throughout your body, take a break from exercising. Instead, get some rest, stay hydrated and, if things don’t improve over a couple of days, visit your doctor. “It’s always your best bet to listen to your body,” Schroeder says. “Just don’t overdo it. Pushing your body too hard when it’s fighting an illness can do you more harm than good.”

At the same time, some studies have concluded that regular, mildintensity exercise can help reduce illness, while prolonged, highintensity exercise can have the opposite effect by making one more susceptible to catching a bug.

Ben Montgomery is a sports and health writer with two decades of experience as both a journalist and a marketer. He specializes in offering information and advice for people looking to live more active, healthful lives.

“I tell people that if they feel they may be catching something—a cold, the flu, or whatever may be going around— they should pull 30«
