FROM THE EDITOR Solo travel: Love it or hate it, exploring on your own is always a rewarding experience. Last summer, I road tripped on my own from California’s South Lake Tahoe all the way to Mammoth Lakes, stopping to see the valleys of Yosemite, the tufa towers of salty Mono Lake, and the crumbling ghost town of Bodie. With no one’s opinions to consider, I braked for Mono Cone’s soft serve, detoured for sunset snapshots, and selfied with every road sign. The simple freedom of riding solo made it one of my best trips of the year. If you’ve only seen California’s coastline, it’s time to venture inland to these wild wonders. Get the full story on page 16. Also in this issue, find undiscovered northern Utah and Idaho vacation destinations (pg.18), a guide to the West’s best music fests (pg. 10), and our picks of the summer’s best travel gear (pg.12). Happy adventuring!

THE BEST FESTS IN THE WEST 6 Can’t-miss Summer Events + Adventures BY NICK COMO
Deer Valley Music Festival
Summer means adventure: road trips, camping, concerts, bikes, hikes, boats. You name it; summer has it all. Heck, there’s even skiing into July this season (I’m looking at you Snowbird, Squaw, and Mammoth). I like to combine as many adventures into each of the 13 summer weekends as possible. With several music festivals around the West, more than one of my road road trips will feature mountain tunes with sports gear in tow. Here are my top picks:
That Father’s Day BBQ you may have been planning? Cancel it. Instead take the crew up to Snowbird. Their “backyard” includes things yours does not: skiing, 30+ local breweries, live music plus a BBQ featuring ribs, doner kebabs, and garlic fries! Park City - Deer Valley Music Festival & Concert Series Deer Valley Music Festival: June 28–August 10 Grand Valley Bank Concert Series: Wednesdays, June 19–August 21 (free) Deer Valley Concert Series: Select dates, June 30–September 7 Deer Valley brings the heat every summer when it comes to music. Three summer-long festivals take place concurrently at this Park City resort, so let us discern the difference for you. Every Wednesday there’s free music as part of the Grand Valley Bank Community Concert Series, while Deer Valley Concert Series’ second season brings in the likes of Michael Franti, Ben Harper, and the John Butler Trio. Keeper 2019 2019 ¦¦¦ Gear Early Summer ¦¦¦
All shows allow coolers, blankets, and low chairs with way more elbow room than other BYOB venues to spread out. Activity-wise, Deer Valley has dozens of miles of singletrack trails for hiking and biking with several chairlifts to get you to the top quickly. Logan - Utah Festival Opera & Musical Theatre Utah Festival Opera: June 22–August 3 Special Performances: July 9, 10, 15, 23, 31
Snowbird - Brewfest June 15–16

From Utah Symphony | Utah Opera playing the music of the 1969era Rolling Stones to Disney tunes, The Deer Valley Music Festival has been a stalwart at the resort that pairs world-renowned artists and symphonic music with a different concept each week.
At only two hours from the Wasatch Front or Pocatello/Idaho Falls, why not load up bikes or boats and boards and spend a weekend in Logantown? The quaint Main Street features throwback dining options, and its eponymous canyon begins just outside of town and leads to Beaver Mountain and ultimately, Bear Lake—known as the Caribbean of the West for its emerald waters. Plus, one of Utah’s finest performing arts groups: Utah Festival Opera calls Logan home. Enjoy the likes of Mary Poppins, West Side Story, as well as Mozart’s Figaro at the historic Ellen Eccles Theatre. When it comes to adventure, visit Logan Canyon’s many biking and hiking trails, with several great routes starting at the foot of Beaver Mountain. Try Stump Hollow, part of the Great Western Trail that traverses the entire state. If camping is your thing, Beaver Mountain offers tent, RV sites, and rentable yurts.

Grand Targhee Bluegrass Fest
Idaho/Wyoming - Grand Targhee Bluegrass Fest Targhee Fest: July 12–14 Bluegrass Fest: August 9–11 The Targhee Fest is one of the stops on what I call the “touring New Orleans Jazz Fest.” It’s too hot on the Bayou in the summer so many all-star acts hit the road to fill the mountain air with tunes on the festival circuit. Check out Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue, Galactic, Dumpstaphunk, Anders Osborne, Los Lobos, and many more at this outdoor event. August’s Bluegrass Fest brings Greensky Bluegrass, Del McCoury, The Infamous Stringdusters, and about a dozen pickin’ and grinnin’ favorites. What better summer combo is there than bluegrass, beer, and big mountains? None. The answer is none. With so much to do on this little slice of the Idaho/Wyoming border, why not plan on heading up to Grand Targhee twice this summer? The resort offers disc golf, a bike park, and lift-served trail access to over 2,000 feet of vertical and 14 miles of downhill trails. Nearby Driggs and Victor easily multiply available trail miles and offer Teton River paddling, world-class fly fishing, and several golf courses. Activities for kids include face painting, a crafts zone, bungee trampoline, climbing wall, gemstone panning station, and Summit Nature Center. And we haven’t even talked about the Jackson Hole area—gateway to Grand Teton and Yellowstone National Parks. Sticking to the west side of the Tetons, you’ll avoid the summer Winnebago and minivan crowds and can enjoy the quieter Teton Valley. Except of course, during two weekends full of funk and bluegrass music. Telluride, Colorado - Telluride Blues & Brews Telluride Jazz Festival: August 9–11 Telluride Blues & Brews Festival: September 13–15 If jazz and blues are your thing, head to the Rocky Mountain High town of Telluride for a pair of weekends in the San Juans: Jazz in August and Blues & Brews in September. Our pick of the two is the ¦¦¦
latter: start off with the Grand Tasting with over 107 beers and ciders, add in headliners Phil Lesh and Boz Scaggs, and you have a winner. Telluride is an alpine dream. B.B. King once remarked, “Out of the 90 different countries I’ve been to, I’ve never seen anything more beautiful than what you have here.” Hard to argue with that. If your lungs can handle it, venture onto the nearby hiking and biking trails. Cool off with whitewater rafting and kayaking on the San Miguel River, or test your mettle on the Via Ferrata, climbing across small iron foot and handholds hundreds of feet above Telluride’s box canyon. Nevada/California - High Sierra Music Festival July 3–7 You can catch many of the same bands playing High Sierra at the venues and festivals mentioned above (Galactic, Greensky Bluegrass, Del McCoury), but one thing that sets this Quincy, California festival apart are its intimate late-night shows. Dancing away to Karl Denson or Skerik after midnight with just a few hundred people is worth the trip across the Great Basin. If you have reason to be in or around Reno during 4th of July weekend, add High Sierra to your list.
Nick Como escaped the skyscrapers of NYC for the tall peaks of the Wasatch. Climber, skier, canyoneer, mountain biker, and lover of food. Just don’t think of offering him pizza with pineapple on it.

Lake Tahoe view from Eagle Rock.
California: the land of beaches, palm trees, and Hollywood stars. Or is it? Instead of your typical California coastal drive, this road trip takes you to the state's inland hotspots, passing through small towns in search of epic outdoor adventures. Beginning in South Lake Tahoe and ending in Mammoth Lakes, here's our 140-mile, long weekend guide to these landlocked wonders. Day 1: South Lake Tahoe Where to Stay: Hotel Azure or Basecamp Hotel Straddling the Nevada-California state line, Lake Tahoe is North America's largest alpine lake and is known for its stunning blue waters. Venture beyond it to find forested hiking trails, epic waterfalls, and historic sites. Follow a winding dirt road west of Lake Tahoe to Fallen Leaf Lake, a natural beauty adjacent to the rushing Glen Alpine Falls. Drive right up to this roaring 65-footer fed by melting snow. Continue up to the two-mile trail leading to an abandoned 1800s-era luxury resort, Glen Alpine Springs. Known as Tahoe's first family resort, Glen Alpine's buildings are preserved as a living museum with docents on hand during summer weekends to share the tales and guide tours. End the day on the lake sunset sailing with North Lake Tahoe's Tahoe Sailing Charters. Take in the breeze and sip a few drinks on the deck of the 50-foot “Tahoe Cruz." Offered seven days a week all «« 16 9

summer long. Or grab a free cruiser bike at Hotel Azure (or rent one locally) and cycle to dinner on the paved lakeshore path. Dining & Drinking: Find wine on tap and gourmet bites at the Tahoe Pourhouse near the turn for Fallen Leaf Lake. Or enjoy heartier, eclectic fare, at Blue Angel Café. (Don't miss the coconutcrusted tofu.) Basecamp Hotel’s beer garden is a great stop for an après-adventure brew and games—even if you're not a hotel guest. Day 2: Bodie Ghost Town, June Lake Loop, and Mono Lake Where to Stay: Double Eagle Resort About 100 miles south of Lake Tahoe, turn off on a bumpy, 13-mile long dirt road to reach Bodie, America's most authentic, stillstanding ghost town. Preserved in a state of “arrested decay,” you can peep in shop windows to see dusty cans and discarded relics,

or amble the streets and imagine what life was like here during the 1800s mining boom. Once called one of the wildest towns in the West, Bodie boasted a redlight district, opium dens, saloons, and gambling halls. Sign up for a mine tour or just explore on your own.
Say goodbye to Mono Lake and take the U.S. Highway 395 south toward Mammoth Lakes, this road trip’s final stop. This glacial lake basin is a pristine summer wonderland boasting one of the country’s longest ski seasons! Depending on when you arrive, you can ski, bike, and fly fish in the same day. But our can’t-miss Mammoth adventure is biking the renowned Lakes Basin Bike Trail. It’s a long uphill climb from town, but you can skip it and enjoy just the thrilling 1,000-foot descent with the seasonal Mammoth Lakes Basin Trolley. This free service hauls you and your ride up to the top so you can cruise the 5.3 miles downhill. Whizz through the forest past the Twin Lake Vistas, Tamarack Lodge, Lake Marnie, and Horseshoe Lake before ending at Mammoth Brewing Company. Whether you’re an expert or newbie to flyfishing, Mammoth’s Hot Creek is the place to cast a line. Find a guide at The Troutfitter, or visit Hot Creek without angling to marvel at this geologic wonder. Here hot springs mix with Hot Creek’s cool waters—creating a happy home for its thriving trout population.
From here, drive an hour south to June Lake, both a mountain town and alpine lake surrounded by dramatic peaks, waterfalls, and towering pines. Drive the 15-mile scenic loop, stopping at Grant Lake, Silver Lake, Gull Lake, and June Lake before detouring 10 miles to Mono Lake. This may seem like a lot of lakes in a day, but there’s no better sunset spot than the lunar landscapes surrounding this majestic body of salt water. Covering 70 square miles, the only saltier lake in America is Utah’s Great Salt Lake. But this ancient beauty is extra unique thanks to its tufa towers. Tufa is just everyday limestone, but forms at Mono Lake when calcium-rich spring waters mix with lakewater carbonates—resulting in dazzling towers on the shoreline. Walk around the towers to capture brilliant sunset shots, and if you don’t mind the salt, jump in for a swim. Or book a guided kayak tour with Caldera Kayak to get up close to the tufa and see migratory birds in flight.
Mammoth Lakes is a hot spring town, and at day’s end, Wild Willy’s is the place to unwind. Found in the Long Valley Caldera south of town, follow a long boardwalk to these natural tubs to find a party crowd soaking the night away. Free to visit and accessible year-round. Dining & Drinking: Sip cold local brews in the beer garden at Mammoth Brewing Company, a local favorite since 1995. We’re partial to the Golden Trout Kolsch, but give the sours and seasonal brews a shot too. Stop for a grab-n-go breakfast and coffee at Stellar Brew & Natural Café. Get more California travel ideas at sportsguidemag.com
Dining & Drinking: A gas station may seem like a bizarre food recommendation, but Whoa Nellie Deli inside the Tioga Gas Mart is not your typical gas station. Located across from Mono Lake, try their world famous fish tacos, lobster and crab taquitos, and other chef-prepared fare. Head to June Lake Brewing for a Deer Beer Brown Ale or BucciCat Cream Ale paired with Hawaiian soul food from the Ohanas 395 food truck.

Sawtooth National Forest
During summer, when Utah’s national parks get overcrowded, those in the know head north to some of Utah and Idaho’s best hidden gems. It’s a great opportunity to explore amazing places that you might have been on the backburner until now.
expansive history of the fossils on display and tell you the best sites to visit. For a different perspective, book a rafting trip down the Green or Yampa Rivers. With plenty of drops and obstacles, this will give you the wet and wild adventure you’re looking for. For a more relaxing weekend, visit the Rainbow Park and Island Park areas to watch those rafters float by while enjoying the view from your beach chair. Take a short walk to the McKee Springs petroglyph panels to see human-like designs and figures carved by the Fremont people over 1000 years ago. See what life was like for homesteading ranchers in 1880s by exploring Ruple Ranch, where old corrals and a loafing shed remain today. When night falls, sit under the dark sky at one of Rainbow Park’s primitive campsites to experience the starlit skies of this remote wonder.

Sometimes just crossing a state line makes everything feel different. The Sawtooth Scenic Byway in Idaho features breathtaking views of towering mountains, rushing rivers, and the forest of the Sawtooth Valley. The drive from Sun Valley to Stanley spans 60 miles of this scenery, including 8700-foot Galena Peak where you’ll want to get out and take in the view while you stretching your legs. Stop in Ketchum, Idaho to see Ernest Hemingway historic sites or take a dip in the popular Frenchman’s Bend Hot Springs. Watch for wildlife like antelope, deer, and wolves as you finish the drive to Redfish Lake. Stay overnight in the historic Redfish Lake Lodge, or rent a cabin for the whole family by the water. Spend the night hanging around a roaring fire then get an early start to the day kayaking or stand-up paddleboarding on the lake.

Now it’s time to get out of the sun and into the lava tubes. Just the term “lava tubes” should fill you with excitement, and these caves won’t disappoint. The Caves Trail leads you to several underground options, but Indian Cave is the largest and easiest to navigate. You’ll need a flashlight or headlamp, but the sun pokes through some of the collapsed ceiling, letting in wide shafts of light and creating an amazing visual as you emerge from the total darkness. If you feel confident, explore some of the darker and more challenging tunnels along this route. Flaming Gorge Distance from Salt Lake City: 240 miles; 4-hour drive

Where can you see otherworldly landscapes and beat the summer heat? Craters of the Moon National Monument in Idaho. This massive lava field was created thousands of years ago and today it provides an unusual and amazing weekend destination. Start your day by checking out one of the short trails with exhibits to learn about the volcanic landscape. The Inferno Cone Trail takes you up a short, steep path to an amazing panoramic view, and the Broken Top Loop gives you a look at almost all of the volcanic features in under two miles. Spiral Jetty
Short on time? Robert Smithson’s fabled land art masterpiece, Spiral Jetty, lies just two hours from downtown SLC. The huge, twisting creation stretches was built in 1970 and coils 1,500 feet into the Great Salt Lake, popping in and out as the water level fluctuates. It’s beautiful from a higher vantage point, but you can also get up close and walk out on to it. The remote location is a peaceful place for meditation or even a picnic. Stay for sunset and enjoy the dark skies away from the city. Round out the trip with a stop along the way at Golden Spike National Historical Park. This year is the site’s 150th anniversary and you can visit to view historical films, see replicas of the steam locomotives that built this country, and even watch a reenactment of the driving of the spike that connected East and West by rail.

Don’t miss the Bear River Migratory Bird Refuge for an auto tour that features hundreds of bird species. Dozens of the species make their nests in the refuge throughout the year among the marshes and open waters. A great stop for catch unique wildlife in their element. There are so many options to explore beyond Utah’s national parks, so head north this summer to check out these lesser-visited adventure destinations. rowin' on the river PADDLING THE ARKANSAS, ROWING CATARACT By Melissa McGibbon
Photo Courtesy of Echo Canyon River Expeditions - The Arkansas River
Whitewater on the Arkansas River.
If you’re not out there running the rivers this season, what are you even doing with your life? The mucho grande snowpack from one of the snowiest ever seasons in the Rocky Mountains means this year’s whitewater rafting is stupidly splendid! Every watershed in the west has an average of 125% to 135% normal snowpack, which translates to a f*** ton more water in the rivers we run. To that end, these are two nearby rivers you should float while the gettin’ is good.
If you prefer to paddle: The Arkansas River Arkansas River Though the mouth of the Arkansas River is in Napoleon, Arkansas and is a major tributary of the Mississippi River, when people talk about running “the Arkansas” they are generally referring to a trip that starts somewhere in the Colorado Rockies near the Continental Divide. The strangest thing about this river is that it flows west to east from Colorado through Kansas and Oklahoma on its way to Arkansas, and it just feels like it’s supposed to go the other way. Anyway, the Arkansas River boasts more than 100 miles of whitewater from Class I (basically bathwater) to IV+(come-to-Jesus) rapids, which makes it one of the most popular rivers to run out west. Echo Canyon River Expeditions I paddled with the folks at Echo Canyon River Expeditions, based in Cañon City, who offer package discounts for lodging and other outdoor activities paired with rafting. They also have tour bundles for other nearby attractions, like the Royal Gorge Bridge and Theme 5«

Park and the historic Royal Gorge Railroad. Yay train rides! You don’t have to be Ross Geller to enjoy the Dinosaur Experience next to the main building at Echo Canyon. It’s as close to a Jurassic Park visit as I can imagine, but you know, without the impending doom. Paddling the Royal Gorge Rafting the Royal Gorge section of the Arkansas River is a singular adventure. In my boat, all seven of us (guide included) simultaneously clung onto our paddles and the raft while trying very hard not to “be a swimmer.” As we pushed our paddles through the fierce water, the raft lurched and punched through an aptly named rapid “Boat Eater,” which was flanked by humongous foreboding boulders and tricky drops. This is just one of the many exciting rapids on this stretch of the Arkansas. Despite being in the middle of trying to champion this Class IV rapid, I was able to find a moment to appreciate the Royal Gorge Bridge situated conveniently above this particular rapid set against the backdrop of towering sandstone walls. It would have been a shame to miss this rare view of the world’s highest suspension bridge as we paddled our way through the raging waters, even if it meant I’d go for an accidental plunge. After braving my way through the Arkansas, I went to the annual Royal Gorge Whitewater Festival in Cañon City to watch others perform feats of whitewater mastery and celebrate with boats, bands, and beers. This year’s Royal Gorge Whitewater Festival is June 21–23, 2019. Where to Stay If you haven’t tried glamping, Echo Canyon Lodging is a great place to try it out. If you prefer permanent walls, they also offer luxury mountain cabins with mountain views.

If you prefer to let someone else do the rowing: Cataract Canyon
of rock history presents its story through Anasazi petroglyphs, sandstone spires, and ancient granaries.
Geological Paradise In July of 1869, John Wesley Powell and his crew were among the first to run Cataract Canyon. He wrote, “On starting, we came at once to difficult rapids and falls, that in many places are more abrupt than in any of the canyons through which we have passed, and we decided to name this Cataract Canyon.”
Cataract Canyon Running Cataract Canyon has been on my bucket list for a month of Sundays. It’s a must-do-before-you-die kind of thing. This spectacular 100-mile journey on the Colorado River starts near Moab, meanders through Canyonlands National Park, and ends in Lake Powell. Unless you chopper in, the only way to get to the good stuff is to row an oar boat through 47 miles (about three days) of Class I–II rapids until you get to the Confluence where the real action starts.
I used to think it was so-named because the water is so splashy in the big rapids that you can barely see, but as it turns out, cataract is an old-timey word for waterfalls. In addition to the succession of Class III-V rapids o’ plenty, this canyon also offers some of the most beautifully remote landscape in the world, including a unique view of Dead Horse Point from far below. More than 300 million years

Holiday River Expeditions I took a few turns rowing the boat in still water, and it made me really appreciate how skilled and strong the guides have to be to maneuver through this odyssey—they also did the cooking, cleaning, and entertaining. So basically, I just princessed my way down the river, switching between paddleboarding, kayaking, and oar-rafting, for five days. This too was exceedingly glorious. PADDLEBOARDING PARADISE

Unexpected Places to Visit This Summer
By Heather C. Hamblin
Stansbury Lake, Stansbury Paddleboarding is booming, and with its ease of entry and accessibility, it’s no wonder why. While landlocked Utah may not seem like a paddleboarding mecca, it’s the perfect place to learn or improve your stroke. Whether you’re a newbie or experienced paddleboarder, uncrowded lakes or reservoir are ideal places to enjoy the sport without being rocked by wakes from other boats. We’ve curated a list of Utah favorites you may not be familiar with, offering calmer waters and beautiful surroundings. HIGHLAND GLEN PARK, HIGHLAND Just 15 minutes east off I-15 in Utah County lies Highland Glen Park, with a quaint pond open for swimming, paddling, and relaxed recreation. The parking lot and put-in beach are just steps apart, and all of the park’s amenities are wheelchair-friendly, making this one of the most accessible spots on our list. It’s a small pond, but perfect for a beginning paddleboarder, younger adventurer, or athlete with different abilities. Surrounding the pond is grass, picnic areas, and walking and biking trails. You’re not in a remote location at Highland Glen Park, yet are still surrounded by beautiful trees and Timpanogos mountain views. MIRROR LAKE HIGHWAY, UINTAS We’re noting an entire highway here, because along the Mirror Lake Highway you can find a plethora of watering holes perfect for paddleboarding. There are dozens of lakes and ponds on this stretch of highway, offering a veritable paddleboarding playground in the stunning Uinta-Wasatch-Cache National Forest. One of the largest and most popular is Mirror Lake, 40 miles from Kamas. But on your way to Mirror Lake, you’ll also pass Washington, Trial, Moosehorn, Pass, and Lost lakes—all quieter options that are ¦¦¦
great places to stop and paddle. The highway is at a relatively high elevation, so check the conditions before heading up so you’re not caught in any snow. If you have a blow-up paddleboard and are interested in hiking to a more remote locale, try Budd or Bonnie lakes, or the lakes of Naturalist Basin. CAUSEY RESERVOIR, HUNTSVILLE Located just 10 miles east of Huntsville, this spot is readily accessible from anywhere in the Wasatch Front, especially if you’re coming from Davis County. Causey Reservoir may be familiar to you if you have spent any time an a scouting organization in northern Utah, as the Boy Scouts of America own property at the north end of the reservoir. The reservoir’s long and needle-thin shape makes it a great place for paddling as you can move along the ample shoreline for a long distance before having to loop back around. There’s also beach space for setting up a sun shelter and picnic along the water’s edge. BLACKRIDGE RESERVOIR, HERRIMAN Just a few short years ago, Herriman was very rural and consisted mostly of farm and ranch lands. Today, it’s abuzz with new construction and some of the fastest growing residential areas in the west. Nestled amidst all that is Blackridge Reservoir, a pond maintained by the city with easy access, comfortable amenities, and a sandy beach, great for paddleboarding access. The reservoir is almost hidden on the hill, with neighborhoods around it, but has an excellent view looking down over the valley below. On warm summer days, you’ll see families on the southside beach, and even concession carts selling popsicles and water. STANSBURY LAKE, STANSBURY If you’re looking for water terrain that is close to Salt Lake and has something other than mountain views, Stansbury Lake might be just the place. The man-made lake was created in the 1970s from a natural spring and flows between quaint neighborhoods. It’s maintained by the Stansbury Service Agency, but does welcome

non-resident visitors; just be respectful of the private property on most of the lake’s perimeter.
STAY SAFE OUT THERE
Stansbury’s a popular place for families, and gas-powered vessels are not allowed, so the waters are almost always calm. Thanks to its lower elevation, this lake is a great early season paddle as it’s guaranteed to be snow free earlier than others on this list. FIRST DAM, LOGAN CANYON The Logan River runs down Logan Canyon in Cache Valley, pooling at three reservoirs at the canyon’s base, just minutes from Logan’s town center and Utah State University. First Dam is the largest of the three and is small but popular with paddlers. Just off of Highway 89 and Canyon Road on the north side of the dam, its park offers picnic and grass areas that are perfect for relaxing before and after your paddle. There’s also a dock to put in a short distance from the parking lot. DEER VALLEY PEBBLE BEACH, PARK CITY Though the ski season has ended, Deer Valley is not done with outdoor fun. The summer months bring hiking, biking, music, and festivals, but also paddleboarding. Deer Valley’s Pebble Beach is a majestic but easily accessible spot surrounded by verdant hills. The water is shallow and calm, and seldom crowded. Park City SUP operates a shop right on the water’s edge where you can rent gear and get some good tips and tricks on the sport. It’s a great place for kids and new paddlers, as no motorized boats are allowed. Heather was born and raised in northern Utah and received a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Utah. to keep working out even when you’re feeling unmotivated. Find an accountability partner or friend who inspires you, especially on the hard days. The bonds you form with a workout buddy will help motivate you to keep your exercise routine long past any external rewards.

2. THINK POSITIVE Want to make exercise more enjoyable? Start with some positive thinking. Exercise isn’t easy, but there are some wonderful benefits you’ll love and start noticing once engaging in a consistent exercise regimen. Maybe you love the time you get to spend outside exercising in the fresh air. Or perhaps you enjoy the relationship you’ve created chatting with your friend after spin class. Focus on the good things and recognize the positive when you find yourself lacking motivation.
5 TIPS FOR EXERCISE MOTIVATION
By Jillesa Anderson, Exercise Physiologist, Intermountain LiVe Well Center
You know you should exercise, but actually putting on your running shoes or showing up to the gym doesn’t seem to happen…day after day. It seems there’s always something more important that needs your attention. Sleep, work, family, friends, checking apps, movies— you name it. Even if you understand that exercise will improve your mood, help you maintain a healthy body weight, and lower your risk for a host of health problems, it can be hard to turn your good intentions into action. Perhaps you’ve tried to find motivation to exercise in the past with little success. If you’re out of ideas for ways to motivate yourself to work out or need to revisit some techniques you’ve tried in the past, these five tips may help. 1. FIND A SUPPORT SYSTEM One of the greatest indicators of workout success may have more to do with the people around you than the fitness goals you make for yourself. Surround yourself with people who will encourage you 30«

3. MAKE A COMMITMENT No goal is accomplished effectively without personal commitment. When setting a goal, write it down, and put it in a place where you see it frequently. Make sure your goal is specific, measurable, attainable, and time-bound. Some people find it effective to create and sign a personal contract with themselves regarding their commitment. Share your commitment with friends and loved ones. To recognize the importance of your commitment, set up some rules you follow if you don’t live up to your personal commitment. For example, if you skip a day of cardio, maybe your rule is you don’t allow yourself to watch TV until you’ve made up your cardio session. Whatever it is, push yourself towards your goals and hold yourself accountable. 4. CELEBRATE THE SMALL SUCCESSES As you exercise, it’s important to celebrate the small successes along the way. Sometimes simply feeling better isn’t always enough motivation to exercise consistently. Recognizing small achievements and having small rewards may help boost your motivation. You held your plank for 5 more seconds today! Tell a friend or loved one about your achievement. These small successes will help you eventually reach your big goals. As you celebrate your small successes and achieve your goals, reward yourself; get a healthy smoothie with friends afterward, take a long lunch, or let yourself read a book when you’d normally be doing something less enjoyable. 5. SELECT COMFORTABLE WORKOUT CLOTHES If you think the clothes you wear while working out don’t matter, you may be wrong. Wearing proper workout clothing will not only make working out more comfortable, it also reinforces the habit of being ready to get fit. In a lot of cases, just putting on your exercise clothes may be enough to motivate you. If you want to work out in the mornings, wearing your workout clothing as pajamas might help motivate you to get out of bed and get going.
