This is not the most flattering photo of me, but I chose it because this is my authentic, “What have I gotten myself into?” face. I can fake a cheesy smile, but here we’re about to embark on The Main Event (AKA super scary part) of Telluride’s Via Ferrata where you traverse a ledgeless cliff section using just metal rungs. A hater of heights, I made it my goal to master my fear by completing this route. Each step felt shaky, but the stellar views and sense of terror/accomplishment I felt made every step worthwhile. In this issue, we show you all the adventures you don’t want to miss before the sun sets on summer: whitewater rafting in Oregon (pg. 10), free rooftop yoga (pg. 18), hiking and hammocking with refreshing Utah brews (pg. 14), and if you’re an experienced daredevil—BASE jumping in Moab (pg. 22). Follow our summer adventures and share yours with us on Instagram @sportsguidemag. Use #sportsguidemag for the chance to have your photo featured. Happy adventuring!

Just beyond The Main Event, climbers are clipped in as they traverse across the wall’s narrow ledges.
Getting High on the Iron Road Overcoming Acrophobia on Telluride’s Via Ferrata By Jenny Willden “Take deep breaths, in through your nose, out through your mouth,” our San Juan Outdoor Adventures Guide, Chris Murray, is coaching me as I stand frozen and shaking, clipped into a cliffside hundreds of feet off the ground. I knew that Telluride’s Via Ferrata would be unnerving, but now that I’m actually standing on stainless steel bars drilled into the mountainside with a perilous drop below me, the fear is real. Not everyone shares my stomach-flipping, heart-pounding reaction to being up here, but heights are my kryptonite. Glass elevators are panicinducing and visiting the Empire State Building’s observation deck was more terror ride than tourist trap. Here in Telluride, Colorado on the side of towering Ajax Peak, my senses beg me to go back to the somewhat safe rock ledge behind us. But that’s not what I came here to do. Plus, I’m sandwiched between my guide and my friend Rachel—so barring a helicopter rescue—I’m stuck. And we all know helicopter rescues are not within a writer’s budget.
VIA FERR-WHATA? Via Ferrata means ‘Iron Road’ in Italian, and it describes the fixed climbing routes equipped with cables, ladders, and metal holds originally built during World War I in the Dolomite Mountains to aid the movement of troops through once impassable terrain. Today, these 8

routes are climbed for fun—not transportation—and though they’ve long been popular in Europe, they’re still a new pursuit in the United States. Expert climber and metalworker, Chuck Kroger, loved European Via Ferratas so much that he decided to build one in his longtime home of Telluride. He forged the metal holds in his workshop and installed them on the wall below Ajax Peak at the end of the box canyon, working at night since the endeavor wasn’t exactly legal. Unfortunately, Kroger passed away before he could finish the route, but others completed it, nicknaming it the Krogerata and placing a memorial bench and plaque there in his honor. Wonder why you may not have heard of this Via Ferrata before? Truly, it was a local’s secret until recent years, but the U.S. Forest Service acknowledging the route and providing permits to guides has turned it into a popular tourist destination, and a rite of passage for Telluridians.
FEEL THE FEAR, DO IT ANYWAY My paralyzing fear is not an atypical emotion atop Telluride’s Via Ferrata, especially the aptly named section we find ourselves on—The Main Event. But what you do with that fear matters; I decide to be dareful, instead of overly careful. With Rachel and Chris coaching me, I traverse a cliff typically accessible only to expert climbers using metal
Since I won’t strap paddleboards to my new car, we went with Bootdoctors (bootdoctors.com) to Alta Lakes, where the turquoise waters are surrounded by Telluride’s iconic 12,000-ft+ snowy peaks. Chillaxing at its finest, we paddled the calm waters, watched local fishermen catch trout, and visited the eerie ruins of a nearby gold mining ghost town, which was interestingly the first place to use alternating current electricity.
edges, and my bravery is rewarded with stunning views of Bridal Veil Falls, Colorado’s tallest waterfall. When I reach the rock ledge—without having fallen—I’m shaking, smiling, and ready to Instagram the heck out of it. See? Even acrophobes can learn new tricks.
GET WET AND WILD ON A TUBE For an in-town, family-friendly adventure, rent a tube and paddle from Bootdoctors for just $15 and walk to Town Park. Hop on the river (with a beer in hand if you’re super coordinated) and float through a surprising amount of scream-worthy rapids in the 30-minute stretch. Lap it if you’re feeling confident about your tree-dodging abilities.
Despite my fears, courage is the only real skill needed to climb the Via Ferrata. More extreme hiking than climbing, it’s built on old mining trails along the face of the 12,758-foot peak. Once you get the hang of clipping, sliding, and stepping safely, it’s thrilling to navigate the wall’s twists and turns.
CONQUERING FEAR
Those with no climbing know-how (two members of our party had never been) can do it. Those extremely afraid of heights like me need not apply—unless you’re as determined to conquer your fear as I am. After The Main Event you can turn back and make it a half day, but continuing offers more challenging terrain to climb, no crowds, stellar views of town, and the accomplishment of hiking four miles on the side of a mountain.
What I learned from climbing the Via Ferrata is that I’ll probably never ‘get over’ my fear of heights. Each time I think it’s tamed, it rises up and I have to reconquer it all over again. That said, I’m already scheduling a return trip to complete The Main Event again—with fewer expletives and more giggles next time.
ADVENTURE HIGH PACKAGE FROM THE HOTEL TELLURIDE
WHY GO GUIDED? Though I’m experienced in the outdoors, an expert at cliffside safety and survival I’m not, which is why we climbed with San Juan Outdoor Adventures (tellurideadventures.com). They use only American Mountain Guide Association-certified guides and are known for their perfect (knock on wood) safety record. Our guide, Chris, brought along his safety smarts, a fun attitude, and Via Ferrata-specific gear that won’t break when you fall (other climbing gear offers false security on routes like these). Chris also showed us ways to avoid serious falls in tricky spots, how to clip correctly, and talked me down from hyperventilating on The Main Event. This route doesn’t feel dangerous at times, but the deadly consequences of slipping make hiring a guide worthwhile—and surprisingly affordable.
The Hotel Telluride (thehoteltelluride. com) is a 59-room boutique hotel within walking or cycling distance of nearly everything you’ll want to do in Telluride, a restored former mining town with a base elevation of 8,750 feet.

Stunning patio views, chef-prepared meals, by-request wine pairing dinners, outdoor hot tubs, pet-friendly facilities, and free bike rentals add value to the prime location. Get your local drink on by using their free bikes to ride along Telluride’s scenic paved bike path to Telluride Brewing Company, just three miles away. The Face Down Brown is a must-drink! Prepare to sweat as the bikes are gearless, and a few small hill climbs are involved. The Adventure High in Telluride Package offered by The Hotel Telluride includes three-night stay, a guided climb on the Via Ferrata with San Juan Outdoor Adventures, technical climbing gear rental, gourmet packed lunch, daily breakfast for two at the hotel, altitude adjustment kit with natural remedies to help tame high altitude headaches, plus a one-hour glider ride with Telluride’s Glider Bob. Prices start at $1,580 for two and the package is available until September 15, 2016.
Stand up paddle boarding at Alta Lakes.
BEAT THE HEAT AT 9000 FEET Even a whole day on the Via Ferrata means you’re done by 2:00, leaving you with an entire sunny afternoon to relax on the water. Kayak, raft, or float the many waterways, or do a twofer like us: stand up paddleboarding on an alpine lake and tubing the San Miguel River.

Raging Blue Whitewater Rafting Oregon’s Clackamas River By Melissa McGibbon
Getting tossed around a boat by glacially cold, raging waters is awfully entertaining. I could actually feel my character building as we made our way through Big Swirly Rapid on the Upper Clackamas River. I tried my best to keep paddling as the river served up consecutive ice bucket challenges to my face, but to our professional guide, Chris Lessick of Blue Sky Rafting (blueskyrafting.com), it probably looked like I was just trying to swat the splashes away. The Clackamas River is one of the best whitewater rivers to paddle in Oregon, and it’s conveniently close to downtown Portland. Thrillseekers in need of a quick adrenaline fix could skip the morning rush and finish a half-day run by lunchtime because it only takes an hour to drive to the put-in point near Promontory Park. The water source originates from Olallie Lake and flows northwesterly through the Cascade Mountains on its way to the Willamette River. Rapids range from Class II to Class IV, depending on the time of year. Spring is a great season to go because the water level is higher, which makes the rapids more fierce thus increasing the level of fun-having, but you can raft year-round on the Clackamas. The Clackamas River winds through the canyon flanked by ancient cedar giants and Douglas-firs that tower over rafters as they pass by. 10

These trees are some of the largest and oldest in northwest Oregon. This protected expanse of wilderness is part of the Federal Wild and Scenic River System, and it is a sight to behold. In some areas I could see 20 feet deep or more into the blue-green water because the clarity was so good. Our chief steerer was kind enough to lead us to a little waterfall along the bank so we could have a fresh sip of clean river nectar. Of course, the calm areas between the rapids make prime spots for rafting games. Our captain forced (see: dared) me to play what paddle pros like to call “Wheel of Fortune,” during which one stands in balance on the bow of the boat while holding a short piece of rope tied to the vessel while the other occupants backpaddle to spin the boat round and round. Despite my superior balancing abilities, the odds were not ever in my favor, and I could only teeter for so long before falling into the river. The water temperature was 55 degrees, though I didn’t mind so much because I hadn’t had any coffee yet that day and I needed a good waker-upper. Also, I had the perfect combination of clothing on to combat the frigidity. If you ever have the chance to play “Wheel of Fortune” on a rafting trip, I recommend you take it—I also recommend

you wear a long-sleeve rash guard, bib-style wetsuit, long-sleeve fleece, drysuit top, and booties. Our skipper recommended this set up; obviously he knew what was coming. Our Master and Commander knows some things about rafting and to prove it, he eased our ride into just the right position on the Rock ‘n’ Roll Rapid, which allowed us to surf it steadily for entire minutes. It was quite a feat. While surfing on a rapid was an experience I won’t soon forget, it wasn’t even the most remarkable thing about the run. I hate to let the

We didn’t see any other guiding companies floating along during the entire excursion. It was just the bald eagles and us out there. Us watching them and them watching us. Sure, it was a Wednesday morning, but it’s hard to believe that such a beautiful place would be so quiet (aside from our screams of terror—joy, I mean joy) as we crashed into the roaring waves. This might be where they record those nature sounds CDs that people listen to while they sleep. Six miles of rapid after rapid, giggles, and wannabe-viking hollers passed by too soon and as we reached the end of our tour, we found ourselves wishing we could do another lap. Maybe next time we will sign up for the full-day trip. Or it wouldn’t be unreasonable to take the hour-and-a-half flight from Salt Lake City to Portland for the day, then hit the river for a half or full day before returning home. People from Oregon do that when they want to come to Utah to ski for the day, right? Of course, then we might miss out on all of the other spectacular things to see, do, eat, and drink in Portland. 4 Utah Beers for Summer Adventures By Sarah Shebek
KAYAKING + SQUATTERS BEER
Summertime in Utah means it’s time to swap skis for bikes, snowshoes for hiking boots, and puffy coats for t-shirts. But no matter the season, beer and cider are always in style. Utah brewers are pros at crafting beverages that are full of flavor without maxing out the alcohol, meaning you can enjoy (almost) guilt-free with your favorite outdoor activities.
Utah’s hot summers offer plenty of opportunities to find your liquid oasis. For great views, solitude, and more lakes than you can shake a stick at, the Uintas beckon. Drive an hour and a half from the city and choose your own lake-venture with your trusty watercraft.
It might be tempting to grab your old standby lager the next time you head outside, but if you’re looking for a new way to complement your adventures, here are a few local suggestions:
Kayaks are especially nice for cruising the calm alpine waters, and are a bit easier to transport into the backcountry than traditional canoes. But let’s face it—all that paddling works up a thirst.
HIKING + MOAB BREWING Let’s face it: there aren’t many flat trails in the Wasatch Mountains. Because when you skimp on elevation, you skimp on views. You’ve got to bring it to conquer our hikes, and you don’t want any extra weight holding you back. Fortunately, canned craft beer is all the rage, and Utah breweries have fully embraced the movement. Moab Brewing (themoabbrewery.com) is an old standby for legions of thrillseekers, and most of their offerings come in cans. When you’re tackling a tough trail like Mount Aire in Millcreek Canyon, you’ll appreciate the extra four ounces in Moab’s standard tallboy can. An especially good choice is the Red Rye IPA, which packs in Chinook, Columbus, Centennial, and Simcoe hops balanced by a malty backbone. The result is a beer with a nice bite that’s not overly bitter, and supremely flavorful at 4% ABV. Grab a chilled can from the fridge and stick it in your pack right before you head out, then enjoy at the summit to maximize your mountaineering experience.

When the sun’s beating down, a lighter beverage hits the spot. Squatters (squatters.com) makes a delicious variety of wheat ale, a kristallweizen, for the summer months. A kristallweizen is very similar in flavor to the more popular hefeweizen, with malty sweetness, notes of banana and clove, and a clean finish. But it’s filtered for a crystal clear appearance, much like the crystal waters of your favorite lake in the Uintas. Squatters Live & Let Live Kristallweizen tastes great while paddling around in a kayak, and at 4% ABV, you can throw a couple in the boat.
6 MOUNTAIN BIKING + UINTA BREWING It’s one of the most popular summer activities along the Wasatch Front, with good reason. The same slopes that offer world-class skiing in the winter transform into miles of mountain biking trails once the snow melts. Although Park City might be the best summer biking destination in the state, Salt Lake City offers a solid trail network just a few minutes from downtown proper. The Bonneville Shoreline Trail offers miles of dirt and outstanding views in the city’s foothills. Almost all of it is bikeable, but the most popular stretch lies between City Creek Canyon and the zoo. It’s a little over six miles round-trip, and while it’s not overly technical, you’re guaranteed to work up a thirst. Uinta Brewing (uintabrewing.com) is no stranger to the canned beer market, and the brewery’s canned options continue to multiply. Tangerine Hop Nosh is a new seasonal for those who love IPAs, and for those who never knew they did. Uinta took their popular Hop Nosh IPA and added real tangerine juice, which gives the beer a pleasant juicy-tart character that’s unbeatable after churning up and down the BST. Put a can in your bike pack for a mid-ride refreshment, or leave one in your vehicle for a post-ride tailgate. 16

relaxation to a whole new level, since they pack down for almost any adventure or camping trip that you’re planning. Once you’ve found the perfect spot and set up, consider a nice beverage to complement the bliss of doing nothing. Mountain West Cider (mountainwestcider.com) is a recent addition to the craft beverage scene in Salt Lake City, and their gluten-free ciders hit the spot after a long day of play. 7 Mile is light and slightly floral, with green apple flavors and a nice dry finish. This one comes in a 16.9-ounce bottle, so you’ll want to share with a camp buddy, and savor the adventures of the day together.
ADVENTURE-READY COCKTAILS Although they seem most at home in swanky bars, cocktails can also complement outdoor escapades. Perfect for the beer averse, you can pre-mix these drinks and pour in a flask before hitting the road, or bring along the ingredients for a camp cocktail bar. Try High West Double Rye whiskey for a campfire hot toddy, Sugarhouse Distillery Vodka for a simple post-ride vodka tonic, or Beehive Distilling Jack Rabbit Gin for a gin rickey when the weather heats up.
Sarah Shebek is a former Midwesterner turned Utah transplant of two years. When she›s not at her day job, Sarah loves hiking trails near and far, camping whenever possible, mountain biking, and enjoying craft beer.

finished setup, Fezzari decided to build a unique bike for each rider. Other industries—including competing bike companies—also sell direct to consumer, but do not offer this level of customization. Think of the way Tesla sells cars: by removing the middleman it creates a closer connection between producer and consumer, while also eliminating the markup the retailer would have. The word ‘custom’ is oftentimes synonymous with ‘expensive,’ but not in this case.

Reinventing the Wheel, Two Wheels at a Time
THE PROCESS
The Custom Bike Experience From Fezzari By Nick Como An old adage says there’s no sense in reinventing the wheel. But—for Utah County-based Fezzari Bicycles—rethinking how two-wheeled travel is built and purchased has turned their company into a powerhouse bike manufacturer. Forgoing a manufacturer’s wholesale relationship with retailers, Fezzari instead offers a direct-to-consumer model for the cycling industry. The result is a hands-on relationship with each customer, resulting in a customized ride at a lower cost. It’s a win-win.
THE COMPANY Fezzari was founded in 2006 by Chris Washburn, who’d been working in corporate America, but was traveling 50 weeks a year and missing his kids growing up. “He knew where he’d be 30 years down the road if he stayed with his current role in the corporate world, and decided he didn’t want to do that,” says Fezzari marketing director, Tyler Cloward. When Washburn decided to pivot towards a passion project, he brought his manufacturing knowledge to Lindon, Utah and Fezzari was born. Today, Fezzari is still owned by Washburn, and they’ve carved a unique niche in their decade-plus of existence by emphasizing three important factors: sales model, customer service, and quality products. Their first success came from an unlikely partner—Costco—who agreed to sell a few pallets of entry-level bikes. Fezzari then refined their approach and worked to improve upon the traditional sales process. The result? Rather than making adjustments to a nearly 20

Fezzari pairs the custom bike experience with a proven sales model and an emphasis on excellent customer service that’s become their hallmark. As a result two-thirds of their sales have been either return or referral business. That’s an astronomical percentage. For any business.
The Fezzari 23-point Custom Setup is used to build a unique bike for each customer, meaning over 20 components are chosen and sized based on a set of nine body measurements, including your instep, shoulder width, and more.
It’s actually really fun getting a coworker to help measure your inseam, with a hardcover book pressed to your privates to get an exact measurement! Pro tip: take the measurements in the privacy of your own home. It takes less than five minutes and saves a trip to the HR office. After chatting with a rep about where I usually bike (Park City and the Utah desert), plus how I ride (usually last of the pack on the up, and cautious on the down) and what my goals were (not be last on the up, keep my eyes open on the down) we went through two or three models that would suit me. The toughest decision I faced was whether to go with 27.5 or 29-inch wheels, but the selling point wound up being the SRAM X01 Eagle 1 x 12 drivetrain, which is a new feature this season. That 12th gear has come in handy a few times already! Through this interview—which Fezzari does with every customer—the model seemed to pick me, more than I chose it. Once they had my measurements, they matched those numbers to an ideal stem angle and length, handlebar width, seatpost length, crank arm length, and more for the frame size of the model I’d settled on: the Timp Peak 2.0 X01 Eagle. Luckily, I live a few minutes up the road from Fezzari’s Utah HQ, so I was able to pick up my fully built bike, which the shop guys generously tuned and rode for me to make sure it was all good to go. For customers having bikes shipped, just put the handlebars, front wheel, seatpost, and pedals on and it’s ready to ride.
THE FIT Right out of the gate I felt comfortable and in a more powerful pedaling position in the saddle. The best analogy is switching from out-of-thebox ski boots to custom boots. Sure, my old boots worked really well, but I had to unbuckle them for lift rides and would be down to about six toenails by the time summer rolled around. Pedaling a Fezzari for the first time on my backyard ride was like that first run in custom boots. Solid. Fast. Comfortable. The proof, as they say, is in the pudding. Or in this case, Strava. I set seven PRs (Personal Records) on that first ride. A few rides later the usual ache in my neck and shoulders was gone. I set a few more PRs and was able to keep up with my faster cycling friends with more ease. Plus, I have a great story to tell about the bike and process whenever I need to stop and adjust my shoes (read: take a break) mid-climb. The Fezzari name is a great conversation starter.
THE BIKE(S) Fezzari offers mountain, road, cruisers (under the Simbi brand), and fat bikes. There are over 20 models in their line, hitting nearly every price point. From entry-level rides at $549, perfect for beginners or juniors, to $6,000+ models for endurance racers, there’s a setup for any goal and pocketbook.
frames with the rider in mind. And lastly, working directly with riders we get to understand their concerns, then take those to the drawing board to build a better product. Plus, the customer is able to save 30,40, and sometimes 50% off a comparable bike from another brand.” The bang-for-the-buck factor is one of the strongest influencing factors in choosing Fezzari. The Timp Peak Eagle I chose was a top-ofthe-line build, retailing for about $6,000 on fezzari.com. The frame is a carbon mountain frame, which aside from geometry is nearly identical to other frames. It was produced in a similar factory to any other brand you’ve heard of, each to that brand’s own set of angles and specs. Most manufacturers, Fezzari included, then build on the same second-party components: Fox shocks, SRAM shifters, Shimano derailleurs. My point is, everyone makes a solid frame, and after that you’re paying for the components. A comparable setup from a different manufacturer, featuring a Fox Float 150mm fork, RockShox Monarch shock, and SRAM x01 components would retail for a little over $8,000. I’m no math expert, but saving $3k and getting a custom-built bike is a winning equation. Plus, I get to giggle anytime someone picks up the book I used to measure my inseam with in the office. Nick Como escaped the skyscrapers of NYC for the tall peaks of the Wasatch. Climber, skier, canyoneer, mountain biker, and lover of food. Just don’t think of offering him pizza with pineapple on it.
Noticeably absent from the site are women-specific models, with the reason being each and every bike is rider specific. Cloward lays out the Fezzari difference in simple terms: “Fezzari is Custom, Quality, Direct. Custom meaning we custom build each bike to each rider. Quality comes from how we design and engineer our

Highflying Extreme Adventures in Moab The Growth of BASE and Wingsuit Jumping By Alexa V. Morgan Climbing, slacklining, skydiving—Moab is a thrillseeker’s mecca. In recent years, this redrock paradise has become home to an elite group of athletes taking human flight to the next level through BASE and wingsuit jumping. Often considered the world’s most dangerous sports, the adrenaline rush is only part of the attraction. “It’s a lot about connections with people, in addition to the clarity and focus you get from doing air sports,” says Ian Mitchard, a photographer and BASE/wingsuit instructor with a skydiving background. “There doesn’t need to be a conversation in terms of thinking about what we’re going to do. When you jump off, you’re very much in the moment.” Since taking up the sports in 2008, Mitchard has completed roughly 500 BASE jumps and just as many wingsuit jumps.
WHAT IS WINGSUIT BASE JUMPING? Wingsuit BASE jumping—a hybrid of skydiving and traditional BASE—requires an extraordinary level of awareness and piloting ability. Jumpers carry both a parachute and full-body “flying squirrel” rig that can reach speeds exceeding 100 mph. A flight lasts just 30 seconds…or less. “Wingsuit BASE jumping is the culmination of a ton of different skills that you gain not only from the skydiving environment, but from BASE 22

jumping experience,” says Mitchard. “Wingsuit BASE jumping is kind of the pinnacle of BASE jumping.”
WHY MOAB? Wingsuits arrived in Moab within the last few years due to technological breakthroughs that made shorter flights possible. Still, the area’s tallest cliffs are barely high enough for the most advanced equipment on the market. Wingsuit BASE jumping is still new at just a decade old, whereas BASE jumping blossomed in the late ‘90s. Today, there are an estimated 3,000 BASE and 400 wingsuit athletes active worldwide. Moab’s easily accessible cliffs have established it as a destination for air sport enthusiasts. This backcountry area is overseen by the Bureau of Land Management and is the only place in Moab where extreme activities—like BASE jumping—are permitted. These sports are outlawed in many state and national parks, much to the chagrin of athletes like Steph Davis. A world-class climber, Davis founded her own BASE training and guiding service in 2011 called Moab BASE Adventures. Her company has fairly high prerequisites for those wanting to learn to BASE jump: a minimum of 200 skydives, a B license, and completion of a canopy control course.

Email: candice@elranchofandango.com www.elranchofandango.com Davis says a common misconception about BASE jumpers is that they are all reckless adrenaline junkies. Some jumpers are engineers or pilots with military training, and most are very calculated in their approach. “It’s a very experience-based sport, and is really about evaluation and decision making,” she says. Most of Moab’s cliffs are in the 400-foot range, allowing very little margin for error. The chute is deployed within two seconds of leaving the exit. And because there’s no guarantee that a canopy will openRancho_Fandango.indd flying away from the cliff, jumpers must be capable of rapid course correction to avoid striking the rocks. “We encourage people to have over 50 BASE jumps before jumping here so that you’ve dialed in the reaction time,” Mitchard says.

RISKS OF THE SPORTS The sport is largely dependent on weather conditions, and wind is often a factor when jumping in Moab. During the summer, heat exchange can create hazardous turbulence. Other dangers are the rocky terrain and small, treacherous landing spots. If a jumper overshoots or comes up short, their chances of safely setting the chute down are slim. The risks are many, but for those with a true passion for the sport—so are the rewards. As the popularity of BASE jumping continues to grow, Moab’s athletes are leading the way by pushing the limits and discovering new ways to soar. “There’s nothing I do that can compare with stepping off a cliff into the air and flying,” says Davis.

Nutrition Tips For Runners By Sarah Stanley Almost every runner I know (myself included!) wants to be a better a runner. We want to run better, perform with excellence and recover faster. So how can you achieve all of this? There are a variety of protocols and at the top of the list is excellent nutrition. What we eat (and drink) has the ability to either enhance or negatively effect our running performance. Here are some practical suggestions you can implement right away into your running routine.
BEFORE YOUR RUN If you hit the trail first thing in the morning there are a few strategies you can try. The first has to do with the concept of “fasted” runs (not eating anything minus some water). Gauge how you feel. For longer runs you probably want to eat something. If you do, choose something that has a healthy fat (coconut), a simple sugar (fresh berries) and a healthy carbohydrate (steel-cut oats).
DURING YOUR RUN Depending on the distance and duration of your run you may need nothing at all, or you may need the kitchen cupboard! I make the majority of my food for during my runs (including races) as I want to ensure that my body is getting the best nutrients possible that will give me natural energy, reduce inflammation, and speed up the recovery process. A few of my favorite staples include my Summit Sandwich (organic vegan bread with almond butter, Maca Powder, Pink Himalayan Sea Salt, raw, unfiltered honey), Smashed Sweet Potatoes (organic sweet potatoes, fresh grated ginger, Pink Himalayan Sea Salt, coconut oil, cinnamon, turmeric), and made-from-scratch protein crackers. I also supplement what I make with real food options like Froodles (these organic fruit strips are amazing), Mama Chia squeezable pouches, and Bearded Brothers bars.
AFTER YOUR RUN While most runners reach for a beer post-race, I don’t advise that. Your body is in a heightened state of inflammation and drinking alcohol is like pouring gasoline on a fire. Instead, opt for healing 24

choices like a plant-based protein drink (I like to mix Manitoba Harvest Hemp Pro70 Chocolate with clean water). Make food choices that support and nourish your running and your body. Choose organic and primarily plant-based foods. Plant-based foods (such as kale, quinoa, hemp hearts, turmeric, ginger, spinach, spirulina, oranges, berries, maca) are anti-inflammatory and will boost your body’s response to manage pain naturally and keep inflammation at bay. You also want to incorporate healthy fats into your overall nutrition lifestyle as well. Coconut oil, raw nuts and seeds, hemp, and avocado are excellent sources of good fat. Make sure to replenish your healthy fat intake after a race as well. Since our brain is around 60% fat it is imperative that we are kind to our brains by giving it healthy fats! If you implement the above suggestions into your lifestyle, you too will reap the benefits and will be empowered to run better, perform with excellence, and recover faster.
