LET’S #RUNRICHMOND! I think it’s safe to say we have never been more grateful to welcome you to Richmond! We’re always excited for race weekend, but this year we’re incredibly thankful to be able to hold the event back Downtown and deliver the race day experience you’ve come to expect from the VCU Health Richmond Marathon, CarMax Richmond Half Marathon, and Allianz Partners 8k. Year after year, we remain amazed at the sheer number of people that it takes to pull off America’s Friendliest Marathon, and even in times of uncertainty, our volunteers, community, sponsors, and you turn out. The 2021 VCU Health Richmond Marathon has been made possible by the resiliency of the running community. When races were getting cancelled, you all kept moving and never gave up. We know that for some of you the VCU Health Richmond Marathon, CarMax Richmond Half Marathon, and Allianz Partners 8k will mark your return to or even the start of your running adventures. Knowing that our event has served as your motivation pushed us

to continue to work hard even when the odds were against us. Thank you for being our inspiration— we needed it! Now, it’s time to celebrate! We haven’t been able to cheer at our downhill finish since 2019, so you better believe it’s going to be loud and the enthusiasm will be at an all-time high! We hope you are so proud of the work you’ve put in to make it to the starting line. We hope race day is everything you’ve hoped for. May the pre-race jitters, cool air of race morning, junk food stops, block parties, spectators, cheer zones, and the downhill finish line be perfect—cheers! Thanks for choosing to #RunRichmond.

That’s why we’re bringing the Pickle Juice Stop back to Mile 23 on the marathon course (Mile 10 on the half marathon course). We’ll have volunteers on hand to make sure you don’t mistakenly grab it instead of water. And if you find that cue cumbersome, there will also be signage to alert you.

Runner Tracking

RUNNER TRACKING REAL-TIME TEXT MESSAGE UPDATES Runner tracking will be available on race day, allowing spectators to follow friends and family by receiving realtime text message updates and splits. You can electronically track multiple runners on the course by entering athlete bib number or name on the website. Updates will be received as runners cross the 10K, 13.1-mile, and 20-mile checkpoints, as well as the downhill finish line. Sign up for runner tracking.

ALTERNATE TRACKING OPTIONS RaceJoy

By tapping into the power of your smartphone, you can follow your runner’s progress in real-time as they run their race. The RaceJoy app, provided by Sports Backers, delivers live tracking, GPS progress alerts, race specific information, and the ability for family and friends to send cheers from anywhere in the world! This will require your runner to carry a smartphone throughout the event. Set up Participant Tracking if you would like to be tracked. Set up Spectator Tracking if you would like to track someone.

Garmin

If your runner is wearing a Garmin running watch, and carrying their smartphone, they can turn on LiveTrack via their Garmin Connect app on their phone. This allows runners to share their live location with friends and family via email, Facebook, or Twitter.

Apple iOS 15

If your athlete is running iOS 15 or higher on their iPhone or watchOS 8 or higher on their Apple Watch, they will be able to share their live location with you before setting off. Follow this step-by-step guide to enable live tracking. This will require your runner to carry a smartphone, unless they have an Apple Watch with cellular service.

Strava Beacon

Strava’s Beacon app works with most modern Garmin running watches and Apple Watches newer than the Apple Watch Series 3 and allows runners to send a live tracking link to three different contacts. This will require your runner to carry a smartphone, unless they have cellular service for Apple Watch. Click here to send a Beacon. 26

Event Charity

OFFICIAL RACE CHARITY!

Kids Run RVA, a program of Sports Backers, is committed to improving the health of all Richmond area youth by encouraging routine physical activity. We do this by supporting school and community based kids running clubs and the coaches who lead those clubs. As the official charity of the Richmond Marathon, donations to Kids Run RVA help us to provide free training opportunities for youth of all ages, abilities, and backgrounds as well as funding to support school-based run clubs and events. For schools with fewer resources, Kids Run RVA grants can additionally cover transportation and entry fees to Sports Backers events—like the Marathon Jr—which serve as celebrations of the students’ discipline and hard work. We invite each of you to learn more about how you can get involved with Kids Run RVA. Each time a child laces up his or her shoes, you will be giving them the most important gift of all: a path to good health and fitness! Give a gift today and give kids the gift of good health.
