The world descends on Jozi for COP17 conference Global attention turns to Johannesburg this weekend when some of the world’s top decision-makers descend on the Sandton Convention Centre for the 17th Conference of Parties (COP 17) of the Convention of International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES). The conference runs from Friday September 23 to Tuesday October 4. Some of the dignitaries expected to attend the opening day of the conference include President Jacob Zuma, Environmental Affairs Minister Edna Molewa, Gauteng Premier David Makhura, Johannesburg Executive Mayor Cllr Herman Mashaba, CITES Secretary-General Dr John Scanlan and United Nations’ Environment Programme’s Executive Director, Erik Solheim. Johannesburg is the latest metropolis – after world cities such as Bangkok, Doha, The Hague and Santiago – to host a CITES conference. After the Department of Environmental Affairs was awarded the rights to host the COP17 conference, it sent out an invitation to South African cities to bid to co-host it. Joburg Tourism successfully bid on behalf of the City of Johannesburg. Though Johannesburg might not play a direct role or specialise in the international trade in endangered species of wild fauna and flora, hosting COP17 and other significant global events presents sustainable marketing and promotional benefits for the city and cements its reputation as a leading global player. Hosting such events contributes meaningfully to the city’s economic growth. With more than 2 000 delegates from 180 countries expected to attend, the estimated direct economic impact for Johannesburg is over R83million. MMC for Economic Development, Cllr Sharon Peetz, stated that the City of Johannesburg was extremely honoured to host this prestigious event that brings the world together to address the key, and relevant issues associated with this convention. The outcomes of this convention will be felt for generations to come. Naturally, the hosting of national and international
events has an indelibly positive impact on both our economy, and the positioning of Johannesburg as a leading conventions destination. In addition to the economic benefits, hosting international events and conferences also contributes to the knowledge economy of not only Johannesburg, but Africa. Johannesburg has a disproportionately high percentage of rare and threatened species and eco-
system compared to the rest of Gauteng and of South Africa as a whole. This is a consequence of the combination of its topographic and geological diversity resulting in a diversity of habitats. The city has over 20 000ha of green open spaces and 3.2 million trees. The Johannesburg Zoo has 326 species consisting of 2 096 specimens housed within 54ha area.
September THE Heritage month has come and gone, but the spirit of promoting our culture and heritage should remain in our hearts. We have to remain proud of who we are, our origin and after all about our country’s multi-cultural diversity. While we support the higher education students’ demand for a free education as per the Freedom Charter, we condemn the burning of facilities. This is an act of barbarism and it need to be criticized from all the ankles because tomorrow those who are coming after us also want to use the very same facilities.
In the sports fraternity, we would like to congratulate Mamelodi Sundowns for their historic performance that saw them qualified for the domestic MTN 8 and continental competition, CAF Champions League. Well done Pitso Mosimane, your technical team and your boys and while we can only say May the Best Team win during the MTN 8 final on October 1 at the Mbombela Stadium in Nelspruit, Mpumalanga but can’t say the same thing about the final match against Zamalek in the champions league. Go get it for Mzansi Boys

To support this exciting change in design, Lunch Bar ran a wrapper collection campaign with the Alex, Randburg, Bara and Bree Taxi ranks. This prize was awarded to Gladys Maluleke, who received a bakkie, smartphone, laptop, printer, airtime, shopping vouchers and much much more. 2017 WesBank South African Car of the Year Finalists announced JMC Landwind making inroads

The Jury will also have access to performance test data, comparative pricing and specification data, as well as comparative parts pricing data, compiled by the Guild’s digital partner, MAPO. While all of the vehicles that are participating in the event represent examples of outstanding automotive engineering, there can be only one winner. The competition now moves into high gear as preparations are made for two days of stringent evaluations at the beginning of February 2017. At these evaluation days – the most critical of which will be the scheduled procedures at the Kyalami Grand Prix Circuit – the COTY Jury will assess the cars independently, with routes and modules designed to test the vehicles in a similar way in which the average consumer would use them. The evaluation days offer the Jury the opportu-
THE popularity of SUV vehicles in South Africa remains on the upward climb and if consumers are confused which SUV to buy given all the models to choose from, perhaps the new JMC Lanwind 5 will help ease the blues. To say the Landwind 5 is impressive is most probably an understatement; the shiny, well-built car offers so much value for money. It comes with most comfort and safety features a consumer wants from a car, more so in this category perceived to be luxurious. These standard features, all in good standing, include air-con, power steering, central locking, a radio with MP3 and aux port, plus single disc CD, electric windows and side mirrors, rain wipers with intermittent setting and roof rack rails. Safety features include dual airbags, ABS with EBD, park distance control, high-mounted LED brake light and child-safety rear door locks. Normally all this will cost a fortune, but for just R289 880 if you really want an SUV that works and no further frills, the Landwind is the car for you. Tried and tested reliability is what sits under the bonnet: a Mitsubishi 4G63S4T inline, four-cylinder engine. This engine powered the Mitsubishi Evolution model when it came out but for the Landwind 5, it has additional oomph in the form a Borg Warner turbocharger for figures of140kW/250Nm. Credibility is clearly what drove JMC technicians when building this SUV as further technical assistance was sought elsewhere to help develop the Landwind 5. These include Prodrive, a British motorsport and engineering group, which helped with the suspension, while Delphi, also a British automative company, did the electronics. German-based Getrag was roped to handle the gearbox department. The Landwind 5 is also not build for speed but if the user needs that, take off from 0-100km/h time in 11 seconds clearly makes this SUV no slouch. The fuel consumption is also decent at this level, at 8.5 litres/100km. Overall assessment is that the Landwind, also nicknamed the Landwind 5, will simply blow you away in all fronts – given its price for the technology involved.

2016 Danone Nation Cup national winners coach, Mbishi Mokwena is a very sad man due to lack of support from Limpopo government, WRITES NAKAMPE LEKWADU Mokwena guided Benny’s Academy to winning this year’s Danone Nations Cup title at national level in three months ago, booking themselves a ticket to France where they will represent South Africa in this Under-12 competition’s world cup. “I am very worried and sad at the same time that it has been three months since we won this competition, and yet we haven’t heard any word from the department of sports and let alone from the Premier’s office. This is a big achievement for us, more so because we are going to represent the country at international level and we were expecting at least someone from the government to have come to us by now,” said the worried Mokwena.

Mashaba announces Bafana Bafana squad to face Burkina Faso and Ghana Brighton Mhlongo, May Mahlangu and Ayanda Patosi have also been recalled. Mashaba says a positive start is crucial in the opening match. “It is imperative that we have a flying start against Burkina Faso, we all saw what happened with the 2017 AFCON qualifiers that the first match is always the most important one as it sets the tone for the rest of the qualifiers. Anything other than a win in Burkina Faso will have us playing catch up and it is never an easy task for any country,” said Mashaba. “We must also ensure that we win our home games as anything less will not be enough to get us to Russia. We know we are carrying the hopes of the entire nation as we embark on these qualifiers, which go hand in hand with pressure, but then again it is part of the territory. But we are feeling very positive about the mission ahead. We have tweaked the team a bit to give it some freshness and we are confident we will do well.” Three days after facing Les Etalons, Bafana Bafana will face the Black Stars of Ghana on October 11 in an international friendly match that will be played at the Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban.
