the relegated University of Pretoria are involved in an early three dograce against the two coastal sides, AmaZulu and Umthatha Bucks. The three sides have played three league matches, winning two and drew one each. We salute the SA’s Paralympic Team for their achievement at the recent 2016 Rio Palalympic Games.

BENNY’s Sports Academy of Tshiozi, a village outside of Louis Trichardt in rural Limpopo, will be travelling to Paris next month to play in the world finals of the Danone Nations Cup against the champion under-12 teams of 31 other nations. And leading them will be 24 yearold Mbishi Mokwena, the coach who took them to the Limpopo and South African titles in the competition, and the tactician behind their success. Mokwena has an astute footballing brain on his young shoulders, and he is continually scheming ways to get around the problem that has faced all the South African teams at

the Danone Nations Cup world finals: their diminutive stature. “I have been studying the videos of past world finals tournaments and, frankly, I don’t see much between the soccer played by the other countries and ourselves,” he said. “The only obvious difference is our lack of size. “I did see, however, that the Brazilians made the third/fourth playoffs in 2014 and finished in 14th position in 2015, with boys as small as ours, so there is no reason why we can’t do well in France.” Mokwena’s approach is to work on the mental preparation of the boys, building their confidence. “They must believe in themselves,” he said “They have the talent and it doesn’t matter what facilities the various different countries have, it is talent and tactics that win games. “We will be going to France as a unit and we need to stay as a unit. We must not assume anyone is better than us. It has been proven many a time that just because a team has better equipment and playing surfaces, it does not mean they will automatically win.”

MILLÉ confirms coach Marosane as the France trip winner Millé, a leader in technical sportswear, will be taking Elias Marosane from BM Mokitime Primary School in North West province to France in October to attend the Danone Nations Cup world finals. Marosane coached the under-12 school team that narrowly lost to Benny’s in a penalty shootout in the national finals of the competition in Reiger Park in June and was chosen by a panel of judges to accompany the team to France as an observer. The panel of judges that made the winning decision was led by scouts from Sundowns, who attended most of the provincial finals and were present at the national finals. In contention were the coaches of the other eight provincial champions (Benny’s are already going as champions). Marosane was chosen based on his ability to mobilize his team on and off the field of play, his calm exterior which is important to kids this age as they must be able to handle pressure, especially when games don’t go their way, his use of the field and positioning of players, team structure, discipline and his motivational skills which were all impressive. The trip has come about courtesy of Millé, a partner in the Danone Nations Cup competition. Millé has been kitting out the Danone Nations Cup teams for the provincial finals to the national finals for the past three years, and they decided to take their sup-

port a step further this year and reward a coach that managed to get his team to the national finals for hard work, dedication and commitment to developing South Africa’s young footballers. The World Finals will take place in Paris, France from October 1416. The package includes travel, accommodation, meals, accreditation to all three days of games and a couple of excursions to experience some of the local culture. The coach will be able watch the 32 competing countries and see how other international coaches manage their teams. He will see how they cope with the match build up and how they manage games, especially how they manage their teams after winning or losing.

He will also watch player performances and evaluate different approaches to the game, and how other countries conduct team selection. He will learn about the general organisation of international events and bring that knowledge home with him. On hearing of the win Marosane said: “This is such an honour and I cannot thank Millé enough for giving me this opportunity. Of all the fantastic coaches at the national final I was the one chosen, I can’t believe it. I have been coaching BM Mokitime for the past three years and all the hard work has paid off. Not only will this benefit the school, but I also have my own youth soccer team, Liverpool.

I believe the team is solid and will not only play with flair but also sportsmanship,” said Marumo.

Pirates and Wits in an early lead

IT might be still early in the season, but BidVest Wits and Orlando Pirates are seemed to be making their intensions of winning the league title come the end of the 2016/17 Absa Premiership season, WRITES SEKABA MAAKE. The two sides are still to lose a match this season after winning two of their first three matches while their other match ended in draws apiece. Both the clubs are on 7 points with the Sea Robbers on top of the summit due to a better goal difference (five goals) as opposed to the Clever Boys’ four goals. Wits who won their first match 2-1 over Kaizer Chiefs before they were held to a 1-1 draw by Polokwane City continued with their winning ways when they beat rookies, Baroka FC 2-0 away in Polokwane mid-week. Pirates however were forced to settle for a goal-less draw at home against the visiting Ajax Cape Town after having won their first two match-

es, a 3-1 at home to Golden Arrows and a 2-1 away to Ajax Cape Town. It remain to be seen as to whether the league’s defending champions, Mamelodi Sundowns will regroup and take off from where they left last season to challenge the title this season. The Brazilians had played only one match by the time of going to the press, away to Golden Arrows in a very dull match that ended in a goalless draw. MABEDI TO CAPE TOWN ALL STARS’ RESCUE

THE National First Division side, Cape Town All Stars have confirmed their new head coach – former Kaizer Chiefs and Malawi international defender Patrick Mabedi. Also arriving at the club is a new goalkeeper coach, Greg Etafia, who worked alongside Mabedi as part of the Moroka Swallows technical bench. Mabedi most recently worked as an assistant to Muhsin Ertugral at MP Black Aces. The pair will join the team on Wednesday this week, ahead of Friday’s NFD clash with Santos at Parow Park. “The club considered several options for the vacant head coach position, but decided Patrick Mabedi was the best fit for Cape Town All Stars,” said Igugu Lekapa General Manager Faeez Dulvie. “Patrick is an ambitious young coach who is highly qualified,

having done his Uefa A and B Licenses in Germany. We expect him to bring renewed energy and enthusiasm to the team as we look to turn around a poor start to the campaign. “Greg Etafia has a huge amount of experience as a goalkeeper in the PSL and like Patrick, is a young coach keen to make an impact on the game. We are confident they will make a positive impact on the team and welcome them to the club.” Dylan Deane will continue as the assistant coach. The club also thanks departing goalkeeper coach Johann Abselom for his services and wishes him all the best in his career. Preserving the Diversity of Our Identity and Heritage SOUTH Africa is a diverse nation and its character is shaped through its strong cultural identity. The strong influence from European and modern culture sweeping across South Africa has seen the formation of organisations such as Indoni striving to preserve the heritage, traditions, culture and unique identity of the country and its people through education. “As we approach heritage day this September, it is also important to reflect on how we preserve this heritage and pass it onto the next generation undiluted. Through stimulating the African legacy, Indoni aims to rekindle individualistic sense of belonging and identity,” says CEO of Indoni, Dr Nomcebo Mthembu. From the manner we communicate through language, music, clothes, religion, architecture etc., to the method we handle ourselves, western culture has proved to have imposed great influence in every sphere of human life. Western culture,

particularly European culture continues with its overwhelming influence to recolonise Africa, with excessive acceptance and adoption in South Africa and the African Continent at large. Asked to comment about this topic with a special reference to African young girls, Dr Mthembu, responded:“Is this FREEDOM, is this DEMOCRACY, or just a mockery? Are young black girls, denied of their identity meant to feel free? Can their natural beauty not be their own democracy? Is this not how the colonizers ruled us, stripping us of our identity and culture?

Are we Free, or just seen as Dom?" “Over the years South Africa has come to the realisation that it is important to nurture and preserve our cultures, identity and traditions before we forget and lose our roots by conforming to modern/western culture. Heritage day has been celebrated through sharing of traditional music, dance and food. Elders teach the young, by exchanging knowledge and telling of stories. It is important that we encourage South Africans to engage in activities that will allow them to explore African

experiences and learn about our diversity and pass the teachings onto the next generation.” Our country is known and appreciated throughout the world for being a multicultural rainbow nation and for embracing diversity and for its rich history and heritage. It is important that we remain true to our heritage by inspiring young people and the society in a manner that positively inspires the promotion and restoration of our true roots and beautiful cultures. While modern and European culture influence and change Africa’s behaviour and customs, Indoni aims to preserve these cultures by inspiring people in a manner that is positively uplifting, while keeping true to the roots of the diverse cultures in South Africa. Indoni proves that new and emerging cultures can exist without tainting the ancient traditions, cultures and identities that define the vastly diverse but equally unified South African people.

Joburg Challenge

ATHLETICS fever is at an all-time high in the country following the recent Rio Olympics. South Africans are still celebrating the achievements of Team South Africa in Rio last month, with Caster Semenya and Wayde van Niekerk elevated to superhero status after their gold medal victories. Many couch potatoes who spent 16 days getting up in the wee small hours of the morn-

ing to watch their heroes performing on the other side of the Atlantic suffered withdrawal symptoms when the Games were over – and many of them decided to shake off their postOlympics blues by getting off their couches to do something sporty. Road running is one of the most popular forms of exercise. It requires little more than a pair of shoes and the determina-

tion to hit the road – and the SPAR Women’s Challenge at the Wanderers Club in Illovo on Sunday October 9 gives thousands of women something to train for. The Johannesburg SPAR 10km Challenge and 5km Fun Run have become an important fixture on the road running calendar, with thousands of women and girls from all walks of life taking part. The Sonja Laxtondesigned route winds its

way through some of Johannesburg’s most beautiful leafy suburbs and the race takes place at a time when the weather is usually at its best. The Johannesburg Challenge is the final race in the five-race SPAR Grand Prix, so the country’s top female runners will be taking part in an effort to gain as many Grand Prix points as possible. Four Olympians, Lebogang Phalula, Chris-

YMPIC AND PARALYMPIC QUALIFICATION SHORT named patrons of SPAR Women’s TIC CHAMPIONSHIPS tine Kalmer, Ruthendo Nyahora and Irvette Van Zyl the current SPAR Grand Prix points leader have confirmed their intended participation in the Challenge. Nyahora successfully defended her SPAR Women’s Pretoria Challenge victory at SuperSport Park on Saturday. SPAR also announced that three times SPAR Grand Prix champion, Rene Kalmer as well as popular actress, Mel Du Bois of 7de Laan fame would be patrons of the 2016 Joburg leg of the SPAR Women’s Challenge. “Our race is not only about top athletes and social runners and walkers but also about fun and entertainment so it’s with pleasure we have Rene and Mel as our faces of the Joburg Challenge this year” said Martin Webber, SPAR South Rands Marketing Director. “Rene and Mel have been great supporters of our race over the years and will interact through social media with all entrants leading up to the race and be at the race in October which will certainly add the excitement on the day.”

Webber added that the 2016 Challenge promises to be more exciting than ever because of the rising number of entries and the celebrations of the SPAR Grand Prix’s tenth anniversary. “This year, we challenge women to not only come and enjoy race day, but as part of the SPAR Women’s Challenge family, to embrace what we are all about. The 2016 race is all about showing you care. So embrace the chance to be part of the race and support a larger cause.” With October being Breast Cancer Awareness month, it is only fitting that the designated charity associated with the race is Reach for Recovery, a voluntary support group for women with breast cancer. The partnership goes back a number of years, and the women from Reach for Recovery

T THE 2016 SA NATIONAL

have become an important part of the race, wearing their distinctive pink t-shirts and spreading the word that cancer is not necessarily a death sentence. As in previous year, SPAR are encouraging schools to participate in the race and have partnered with Mercer to award the top three schools with the largest entries and race finishers with IT prizes. For the first time this year, the organisers are also calling on the people of Johannesburg to help those who cannot afford the shoes needed to start running. During the 2015 SPAR Challenge, staff from Caxton noticed that many children from disadvantaged schools ran the race barefoot. As a result, Caxton is running the Drop off a Pair and Show You Care drive to put shoes on bare feet.

Participants in the Challenge can drop off an old pair of shoes when they collect their race numbers. The style and size don’t matter, but what is important is that the shoes should be in good condition. Those who donate shoes stand a chance of winning one of five R1000 SPAR vouchers, one of five sets of New Balance running shoes, or one of five hair vouchers from Tanaz in Sandton. Entry forms are available from all SPAR stores or online at spar.co.za. Meanwhile Sports Focus and Spar South Rand are giving away Spar Shopping Vouchers worth R3 000 to four lucky readers. To stand a chance of winning, answer the simply question below: Name one patrons of SPAR Women’s Joburg Challenge who recently announced. Send your answer, name and contact details at sportsfocus@lenakacom.c o.za The competition closes on Monday, September 19 and winners will be informed telephonically on Tuesday, September 20.

PREPARE TO BE BLOWN AWAY BY JMC LANDWIND

THE popularity of SUV vehicles in South Africa remains on the upward climb and if consumers are confused which SUV to buy given all the models to choose from, perhaps the new JMC Lanwind 5 will help ease the blues. To say the Landwind 5 is impressive is most probably an understatement; the shiny, well-built car offers so much value for money. It comes with most comfort and safety features a consumer wants from a car, more so in this category perceived to be luxurious. These standard features, all in good standing, include air-con, power steering, central locking, a radio with MP3 and aux port, plus single disc CD, electric windows and side mirrors, rain wipers with intermittent setting and roof rack rails. Safety features include dual air-

bags, ABS with EBD, park distance control, high-mounted LED brake light and child-safety rear door locks. Normally all this will cost a fortune, but for just R289 880 if you really want an SUV that works and no further frills, the Landwind is the car for you. Tried and tested reliability is what sits under the bonnet: a Mitsubishi 4G63S4T inline, four-cylinder engine. This engine powered the Mitsubishi Evolution model when it came out but for the Landwind 5, it has additional oomph in the form a Borg Warner turbocharger for figures of140kW/250Nm. Credibility is clearly what drove JMC technicians when building this SUV as further technical assistance was sought elsewhere to help develop the Landmine 5. These include Prodrive, a British motorsport and engineer-

ing group, which helped with the suspension, while Delphi, also a British automative company, did the electronics. German-based Getrag was roped to handle the gearbox department. The Landmine 5 is also not build for speed but if the user needs that, take off from 0-100km/h time in 11 seconds clearly makes this SUV no slouch. The fuel consumption is also decent at this level, at 8.5 litres/100km. Overall assessment is that the Landwind, also nicknamed the Landwind 5, will simply blow you away in all fronts – given its price for the technology involved. Pricing: Landwind 5 MT 4X2 LUX R289 880 The price include a threeyear/100 000km warranty and a two-year/60 000km service plan

TUCSON RETURNS SMARTER AND SMOOTHER Hyundai continues its hard earned reputation of offering sheer driving pleasure for competitive prices through the reintroduction of the Tucson SUV in the South African market. The Tucson had a four-year spell in SA, selling close to 23000 units between 2005 and 2009 when it was replaced by the ix35. Seventeen years on the ix35 has reverted to the original Tucson, but with much more to offer in terms of comfort and safety features. The other 1.6-litre engine, the Executive model, has front-wheel drive configuration option, while the 2.0-litre Premium derivatives are available with front-wheel drive only. as a panoramic sunroof, opening 30% wider than before. The Elite models can also be fitted with a larger display screen for optional additional payment of R15 000. There are 12 body colours, including a new orange hue. In addition, Peugeot claims it has added an innovative textured paint to its existing solid, metallic and pearlescent paint finishes. Effiency and engine

Peugeot says all versions of the new 208 meet Euro 6 emissions standards. The 208 Active is fitted with a PureTech 3-cylinder engine available in a naturally aspirated 1.2l 60 kW version. The PureTech 3-cylinder is also available in a turbocharged 1.2l 81 kW version fitted on the GT Line with Stop&Start technology. The GT Line version is available with a 5-speed manual transmission, or the new 6-speed EAT6 automatic gearbox (Efficient Automatic Transmission 6-speed) which uses Quickshift technology allowing faster changes. Combined with the new automatic EAT6 gearbox, the 1.2 PureTech 81 kW EAT6 S&S turbo version emits C02 emissions of only 104 g/km, says Peugeot, making it the benchmark for petrol automatics in the segment. GT Line and more The two flagship GT Line models of the 208 boast unique features including a special grille with red detailing, a gloss black finish for the grille surround, fog light trim, new side-mirror housings and 17’’ Caesium alloys. Also unique to the GT Line exterior is the chromed-finished exhaust, red Peugeot lettering and privacy glass for the rear windows. Inside there are special GT Line sports seats, upholstered in black and red with contrasting stitching. Red detailing on the black seat belts and the multifunction steering wheel gets a full leather-trimmed rim.

CARS MADE IN CHINA GETS WARM RECEPTION IN SOUTH AFRICA When cars made in China vehicles hit global markets their reception ranged f r o m cold to scorn, w i t h very appreciation seeping through in between. After a slow but determined entry into global vehicle markets, a move which was received with a lot of doubt and sometimes scorn, the world is now receptive to Chinese models. We recognise the fact that the change in attitude did not come easy, but Chinese automakers made it happen for themselves by making huge improvements in the design and engineering of their cars. Chinese cars are beautiful and reliable, and a good value for money. Our publication Sports Focus is planning to run a “Made-in-China” feature in our next edition to highlight the achievements of the Chinese automakers in the past decade. We have recognised the fact that GWM is one of the leading brands which fought a noble battle to change the attitudes, and we are

Mashaba is safe “for now”

SAFA President Dr Danny Jordaan has vehemently refuted allegations that the issue of Bafana Bafana coach Ephraim ‘Shakes’ Mashaba will be discussed in the coming days. Some unfounded reports allege SAFA would on Wednesday discuss the future of Mashaba but Dr Jordaan said SAFA had no business discussing its affairs in the media and more so ‘non-South African’ media. “That statement alleging SAFA would discuss Mashaba on Wednesday is not only disturbing but for someone from some farflung areas to peddle such falsehood is totally irresponsible. There is no iota of truth in that statement. It is malicious, reckless and defamatory. We don’t deal with our matters through the media and if we do so, we will call a press conference to grant our journalists that information,” said the SAFA President.
