Happy 2016 friends After a lengthy break, we are back with your favourite publication, Sports Focus. It is with excitement to introduce the very rst edition of your publication on the 2016 calendar and hopefully you will enjoy it. The month of January came with problems for a number of coaches in the Absa Premiership, more so to the local coaches who are feeling the heat in their respective clubs due to a string of poor results. Already two of those local coaches, Gordon Igesund and Sammy Trougton were relieved from their jobs, ironically by two Ts h w a n e b a s e d o u t t s ,
SuperSport United and the University of Pretoria. Both Igesund and Troughton have since been replaced by Stuart Baxter and Shaun Bartlett. More local coaches are also not completely guaranteed that they will wake up the next day and still nd themselves obtaining their positions, and those coaches include the likes of Orlando Pirates' Eric Tinkler, Serame “Meneer” Letsoaka (Bloemfontein Celtic), Roger de Sa (Ajax Cape Town) and even Jomo Sono himselves is not safe. However on the positive note we are excited about the good job by other local coaches such as Pitso Mosimane (Mamelodi
Sundowns), Gavin Hunt (BidVest Wits), Steve “Koloi” Komphela (Kaizer Chiefs) and Cavin Johnson of Platinum Stars. We also want to comment Limpopo's National First Division side, Baroka FC who are doing well in their league campaign. For the record, the club is currently on top of the log with 38 points from 17 league matches, a six point gap between themselves and close rivals, Witbank Spurs who are second with 32 points from the same number of matches. For now let me wrap it here, and we will talk a lot about other pressing matters in the next issues.

RIMARY schools across the country are invited to become part of the biggest football tournament for kids between 10 and 12 years old in the world by entering the 2016 Danone Nations Cup. Over 1 500 schools register to participate in the tournament each year, all vying for the rst prize, which is a trip to participate in the World Finals with 31 other countries. Primary schools across the South Africa have until 1 March to register. Games will begin at cluster level immediately after registration closes. The winners will progress to the Regional nals culminating in the nine provincial winners playing in the National nals to determine the national champion school. “Through the Danone Nations Cup we are reaching kids at a crucial age,” said Chantel Ehlers, communications specialist, Danone. “We are passionate about making a difference to people’s lives and our mission is ‘Bringing health through food to as many people as possible,’ which we are achieving through this tournament. We are also encouraging kids to believe in their dreams.” 2015 champions, Bree Primary School from Mayfair,
Johannesburg, will be in action again this year and principal, Dave Kalicharan will be starting trials to select the team shortly. “I only have two players that went to Morocco that still qualify for the competition this year and luckily one of them was one of the best player last year, goalkeeper, Mncebisi Nguse. He will be joined by midelder, Vusi Mbuthi. This year I am going to look for players from my under 10’s and 11’s to build a team for the next two years.” Kalicharan says that he has not seen the boys in action since Morocco as they returned to go straight into exams so soccer was put on the back burner, but admits he has seen a dramatic difference in the condence of the players
since the trip. “The trip to the world nals has opened the eyes of every player. They know that there are endless opportunities awaiting them and I can see that their condence and ghting spirit has improved dramatically. Those players that have gone on to high school will benet from the experience,” said Kalicharan. “They have learnt that you can achieve anything if you put your mind and energy to it and remain focused.” To register contact your local Department of Education sports coordinator or the South African Schools Football Association (SASFA): Themba Tshabalala at shakesonthemove@gmail.com. or 072 588 4957. BANYANA PREPARES FOR RIO 2016
B A N YA N A B a n y a n a ' s preparations for the 2016 Rio Olympic Games are in full swing at the Nike Football Training Centre in Pimville, Soweto. The South African Women's Senior National team is holding regular training camps
to ensure the players are ready when the tournament kicks off in August. “We have fallen behind in terms of fitness if you compare to when we played against Equatorial Guinea in October last year. Our main priority is to keep the fitness levels up. I am
glad we are back early in the year so we can get those levels to the highest intensity and to grow even further so we can be fitter and stronger and be able to compete,” said Banyana Banyana head coach Vera Pauw. On Tuesday, the players underwent tests conducted by the University of Pretoria. “We are conducting these tests, which will be regular so we can ensure that we keep track and monitor the recovery rate of the players so that we know how much work load we need to put. When you don't recover well, it affects your performance. So it is crucial that we get it right,” added Pauw. On the playing personnel, goalkeeper Roxanne Barker has left her Iceland club to focus her attention on the preparations for the Olympics. The training programme is jam-packed and will require players to be available all the time. “It's nice to see such commitment and players willing to sacrifice so much to be part of the final squad. We have others who have taken leave at work and school and it gives one pleasure to see so much enthusiasm from the players. Many know that this is a once-in-a-life time opportunity,” said the coach. Meanwhile midfielder Amanda Dlamini (pictured with Mpumi Nyandeni) has missed the two camps in the new year due to family commitments.
“We would have loved her to be here with us but in this case, family comes first. We have given her a training programme that she is following so she can be active and is not left behind too much. But obviously, we would love her to be with us so that she is on par with the other players. She can only do that once she is ready, and we understand her situation,”concluded Pauw. Banyana Banyana took a break from camp on January 29 and returned on February 1. Meanwhile 18 players will be registered to play for the tournament. An additional 4 (four) will be accredited but will only feature in the competition if there is an injury to any of the 18. The four will travel, stay and train with the team during the tournament.www.safa.net

JSE HONOURS PSL'S TOP OFFICIALS
JOHANNESBURG Stock Exchange (JSE) today honoured PSL Chairman, Dr Irvin Khoza, PSL Executive Committee member Kaizer Motaung and one of the country's celebrated football icon Jomo Sono at an event at its headquarters in Sandton. The trio also opened formal trading at the JSE at 9am this morning. JSE CEO, Nicki NewtownKing said: “It's such an honour for us to be able to honour these three legends; Dr Khoza, Mr Motaung and Mr Sono for their contribution to football and the economy of this country. Soccer is part of our DNA in this country and these are the fathers of soccer. We must honour and recognise their central role in the manner in which they have been able to carefully guide soccer to be a commercially viable asset of
t h i s c o u n t r y. T h i s i s something we appreciate as the JSE.” PSL Chairman, Dr Khoza thanked the Johannesburg S t o c k E x c h a n g e management and Board for recognising the role played by domestic football in the country's economy. He said: “One signicant part about the event hosted by the JSE today is that this moment will energize the media in South Africa to begin to write about the business side of football so that we can get people to understand the business side of football because that is something that has not been spoken about. We must be able to sensitize people about the role of football and the value-add it brings in terms of the economy of our country. 30 years ago, our income was R300 000, today it is almost a billion rand – that is
something emotional for me because it shows the impact of what has been done by the administrators of the game to sell and promote this product of football. Credit must go to all the founding members who bought into the vision many years ago.” Khoza said it was important for the PSL not to be complacent and remain innovative: “What we are grappling with now, is how we position ourselves. We need to identify the new growth points for football.” Kaizer Motaung added: “A lot of people do not recognize the role of football in addressing the socio-economic needs of our communities. A lot of people made sacrices for this product to be like this today – some of us we were prepared to pay the ultimate
price in order for the dream to be fullled. Football has achieved a lot against all odds. We all know the history of this country. We never had the same opportunities but football managed to build a strong business.” Jomo Sono concluded: “Growing up in Orlando (Soweto), I never knew that one day I'll be at the JSE being honoured for my contribution. I used to sell apples and peanuts to pay for my education but football has always been part of who I am. Today, football in this country is business – many people can now feed their families from this game.”

TINKLER CRY FOUL AFTER ERASMUS' TRANSFER TO STADE RENNAIS ORLANDO Pirates coach Eric Tinkler has admitted that he was not aware that his star striker Kermit Erasmus has joined Stade Rennais FC. Kermit Erasmus transfer to
French ligue 1 side Stade Rennais FC came as a shock to Orlando Pirates coach Eric Tinkler. The forward was reported to be attending family matters

ABSA PREMIERSHIP: WEEKEND WRAP A full weekend's action, including the Soweto derby, saw 18 goals scored, with Mamelodi Sundowns enjoying a three point gap at the summit after the dust had settled. The action started on Friday night as Ajax Cape Town edged out Golden Arrows 1-0 in the Mother City, thanks to Ruzaigh Gamildien's crisp ď€ rst half volley on 33 minutes, the result leaving Arrows seventh while Ajax are 11th. Saturday's highlight saw a full house at the FNB Stadium, where Orlando Pirates came back with a second half headed goal through Thamsanqa Gabuza on 68 minutes to cancel out Willard Katsande's 27th minute opener in a 1-1 Soweto derby draw between Pirates and Chiefs. Jomo Cosmos' struggles continued as they went down 2-1 away to Polokwane City. Former Ezenkosi striker Essau Kanyenda opened the scoring for Polokwane after only a minute played, Brice Aka equalising from the spot on 68 minutes before Sipho Jembule grabbed an 80th minute winner as Rise and Shine moved to 12th on the table. In Mpumalanga, Collins Mbesuma grabbed his 11th league goal of the season as Black Aces edged out Chippa United 1-0, the win taking
AmaZayoni to second spot, three points behind Sundowns, while Chippa are sixth. Sundowns meanwhile had to hold on at the Harry Gwala Stadium for a 3-2 win over bottom-of-the-table Maritzburg United. The Brazilians were 3-0 up and in rampant mood after goals
from Hlompho Kekana (a brace) and Khama Billiat. The Team of Choice scored two late goals through Evans Rusike and Brian Onyango, but were still left empty handed. New SuperSport United boss Stuart Baxter meanwhile saw his team getting a 1-0 home win over Free State Stars,
Kingston Nkthatha's 13th minute goal enough for maximum points in Tshwane. On Sunday, Bidvest Wits saw their title ambitions taking a slight dent as they lost 2-1 to Bloemfontein Celtic in the Free State. Elias Pelembe put the Clever Boys in front on 35 minutes, but second half goals for Thapelo Morena, and a late penalty by Musa Nyatama, secured a much needed victory for Phunya Sele Sele. New AmaTuks coach Shaun Bartlett was unable to inspire the University of Pretoria to victory, watching as his side lost 2-0 to Platinum Stars at the Royal Bafokeng Stadium on Sunday, where Solomon Mathe (26') and Siyabonga Zulu (86') ď€ red Dikwena to victory.-www.psl.co.za

AIRBAG MODEL RAISES STAKES FOR DATSUN GO AS much as Datsun GO was well received, with the young market and the young at heart loving it for its less R100 000 price and its attractive, smooth looks, the vehicle also received ak for its lack of basic safety features, more so the airbags. The good news is that the manufacturer has responded positively to the criticism, launching the Datsun GO Lux with an airbag on the driver's side. The Airbag Lux rst hit the road mid-year last year in India, the country where the GO is manufactured. The vehicle has hit these shores as well, priced below R110000. The arrival of GO Lux has also further improved car ownership for different categories of people as the entry level model has got even cheaper at R97 200. Apart from the driver-side airbag, the Lux comes with more smart features the initial did not have. These are power steering, for a better driving experience; USB port and auxiliary input for the entertainment component, and a slightly heavier weight. This is remarkable progress for the GO, after a report by the Global NCAP testing agency recommended that the vehicle be discontinued, saying it was pointless to even t the airbag into it. Nissan weathered the storm arguing that the GO met basic standards of the countries it was released in, including SA. In fact Nissan had also argued that the Global NCAP tests did not inuence their decision and insisted that the move to
offer the Datsun Go airbag was always in the initial plans, as follow-up to the introduction of the Datsun GO. There's no denying the importance of safety, given the numbers of deaths due to road crashes. In spite of what
NCAP say, and what Nissan does it appears the GO is here to stay as people vote with their feet and wallets. DRIVING PLEASURE Apart from the attractive fuel economy of 5.2 litres per
100km, Datsun GO impresses with spacious interior for family and friends, and plenty of room in the boot too. It's designed for everyday life and it h a s d e c e n t acceleration for when you are in a hurry. However, the best way to drive around in the GO is at cruise speed, so that it's beauty can also be enjoyed by those seeing it drive past. PRICING: Datsun GO Lux (Airbag) R111900 Includes a 3-year / 100 000km warranty plus service intervals of 15 000km

With its inspiring design, innovative technology and engaging drive, the new Corsa will appeal to single m e n a n d w o m e n , professionals with young families, and young-at-heart drivers who love great cars and want something that will set them apart from the crowd. Sculptural artistry meets German engineering From the front, the new Corsa is immediately recognisable as a member of the new Opel family. The bold face is characterised by the 'wing' shaped headlights which incorporate the daytime running lights and the low, sporty trapezoidal grille, with its dynamic chrome bar
supporting the Opel emblem. The front fog lights are e m b e d d e d i n t w o l o w, outward-lying but graphicallyconnected air inlets with model-specic chrome trim, giving the new Corsa an even wider appearance. From the side, the belt line extends upwards to create an energetic connection with the roof spoiler. The sculpted anks feature Opel's dynamic 'blade' side body signature. At the rear, wide horizontallysplit tail lights help to visually widen the car and ow through to the rear shoulders, contributing to the vehicle's athletic stance. The tail lights also incorporate the 'wing' motif when illuminated, with the lower bumper visually connected to the body side 'blade' by design lines which ow into the license plate pocket. The rear rooine in particular has undergone specic aerodynamic tweaking for optimised efciency and stability.

AND AFFORDABLE
Interior with high-class materials and workmanship Sculptural harmonious surfaces and graceful owing lines are key elements in the design of the new Corsa's interior. The sculptural wingshaped instrument panel (IP) top-pad combines a subtle blend of taut surfaces and owing transitions bordered by elegant décor. The décor spans the full length of the instrument panel emphasising the width and spaciousness of the interior. Premium, high quality materials – like those used for the soft IP top-pad, or the décor elements dressed in rich satin chrome, are all worthy of vehicles from much higher segments. Each material used in the new Corsa is carefully chosen to support the premium character of the interior, clearly reecting a level of quality and craftsmanship born of German engineering. The three-dimensionally-
sculpted steering wheel with the small and efcientlypackaged airbag cover is designed to not only look great, but with ergonomics at the forefront. The switches are integrated into the overall design with extreme precision and framed by a tasteful, satin chrome bezel. The round, chronostyled instruments and satin chrome framed switches convey an aura of sporty precision. In addition to the high quality of the cabin, Opel also made it a major objective of the new design to rene the aerodynamics of the vehicle in order to reduce interior noise. Special sealing on the B-pillar, door handles, side- and rear windows along with an optimised bonnet edge reduce wind noise signicantly by 2.3 dB. All in all, the new Corsa boasts a new level of quality, material and workmanship that is usually expected in cars from higher segments. Thereby, Opel substantiates its quality standard of also offering small cars with a premium touch at affordable prices. Well-rounded: brakes and wheels The base model new Corsa, is tted with 15-inch wheels and 215-width tyres with ventilated front and solid rear discs which can easily cope with high stress. Pedal feel is distinguished by an exactlydened pressure point and excellent controllability. The
braking system is assisted by electronic aids which permanently receive information from the ABS/ESP sensors. For example, the systems recognise whether the braking manoeuvre is being performed while cornering and distributes the braking force to all four wheels depending on the load. Fuel economy and performance Start/stop technology is tted as standard to boost fuel economy, with the Corsa consuming just 5.0-litres per 100 km over the combined cycle, equating to only 119 g/km CO2 emissions. State-of-the-art technologies in Opel's new generation three-cylinder engine include high-pressure direct fuel injection, an ultra-compact turbocharging system and continuously variable valve timing (both intake and exhaust sides). Lightweight, all-aluminium construction, with a cylinder headintegrated exhaust manifold,
contributes to low weight: the 1.0 ecoFLEX Direct Injection Turbo tips the scales at just 106 kg. The engine is mated to an all-new, compact sixspeed manual gearbox. More connectivity and convenience for meaningful innovation Opel's award-winning IntelliLink infotainment system, which brings the connected world of smartphones and apps into the car, is available as an option on Enjoy and Essentia models, and standard on Cosmo. IntelliLink is fully compatible with the latest Android and Apple iOS-based smartphones. IntelliLink has a standard seven-inch colour touchscreen and its home page provides access to ve major functions: phone, audio, gallery, settings and apps. Audio streaming via Bluetooth and USB also includes Gracenote music m a n a g e m e n t a n d identication technology.

SAFA'S MEETING WITH SEXWALE
FOLLOWING various reports in the media over the last few days regarding the coming FIFA Presidential elections, the South African Football Association (SAFA) reiterates its statement made last week that it has requested an update from the FIFA Presidential candidate, Mr Tokyo Sexwale, following a mandate to do so by the SAFA National Executive Committee (NEC). Sexwale has not had an opportunity to present an update on his campaign since his endorsement by the NEC in October 2015 as a result of his commitments related to his campaign. Due to the truncated campaign period occasioned by the scheduled election on February 26, the NEC empowered the SAFA Emergency Committee (EMCO) to deal with all matters such as these requiring the Association's urgent attention since the NEC is scheduled to meet only on March 26. "SAFA therefore reiterates its position that the meeting with Sexwale was called merely to receive an update on the next steps in his campaign and to determine what further
engagement he requires from the Association and not to convey a decision of the NEC on the viability or otherwise of Mr Sexwale's candidacy, as some media reports indicate," says SAFA CEO Dennis Mumble. Here are some of Sexwale's competitors in the running for the FIFA presidency: Michel Platini, 60, France. Who is he? One of the most revered players of all time and president of Uefa since 2007. Also a vice-president of Fifa. Pros: Has been waiting his turn to succeed Sepp Blatter for years and has the most experience in football administration of any candidate. Has rare international appeal for a European and has gone from pro to anti-Blatter. Cons: Suspended for 90 days and facing lengthy ban for soliciting ÂŁ1.3 million suspected criminal payment from Blatter, who was previously his mentor. Denies any wrongdoing and is appealing provision sanction. Chances: 0/10 if banned and only 8/10 even if cleared. Sheikh Salman Bin Ebrahim AlKhalifa, 50, Bahrain. Who is he? Fifa vice-president,
president of the Asian Football Confederation, and cousin of the King of Bahrain. Manchester United fan who lived in London while studying accountancy. Pros: The most senior of the candidates currently allowed to run. Has quelled inď€ ghting within the AFC since becoming president in 2013. Cons: Alleged to have been complicit in identifying footballers and other athletes who took part in 2011 pro-democracy protests in Bahrain, resulting in their detention and torture. Also alleged to have helped supress independent report into corruption at AFC. Denies any wrongdoing. Backed Blatter at May's election and Platini for the current ballot prior to his suspension. Chances: 7/10. The favourite after passing Fifa's integrity check, despite allegations against him. Prince Ali Bin Al-Hussein, 39, Jordan. Who is he? Former Fifa vicepresident, current president of the Jordan Football Association and third son of King Hussein of Jordan. Pros: Leading campaigner for
reform within Fifa before and after being ousted as vicepresident. Also helped overturn the ban on the hijab in football and has been openly critical of Blatter. Cons: Lacks support among world football's powerbrokers and unable to secure backing of his own confederation. Could only manage 73 votes in May's election against Blatter despite arrests that sent Fifa into meltdown. Also owed his place on executive committee to Blatter's alleged intervention in A F C e l e c t i o n i n 2 0 11 . Chances: 5/10. There may be those who will vote for anyone but Prince Ali.
