TEAM CONCEPT CONFERENCE 2018 HOSTS OVER 500 PARTICIPANTS Team Concept Conference 2018 was a milestone for SPTS, welcoming over 500 participants among attendees, speakers and exhibitors. The larger venue at the Westgate Las Vegas provided the space needed for the larger attendance and the sixty exhibitors presenting. Here’s a look at the conference through the eyes of three SPTS members. The Sports Physical Therapy Section of the American Physical Therapy Association held its annual Team Concept Conference at the Westgate Las Vegas Resort and Casino from Thursday, November 30th, to Saturday, December 2nd. this year’s conference was “The Power of Innovation.” Presentations focused on innovative technologies, new surgical techniques, and the latest rehabilitation interventions. Pre-conference sessions began on Thursday with experts sharing their research and clinical experiences with blood flow restriction therapy for sports medicine. The session on blood flow restriction therapy opened with an overview of the basic science and methodology, and continued with discussions on blood flow restriction therapy for lower quarter injuries, upper quarter injuries, and tendinopathies. A panel then discussed the use of

blood flow restriction in clinical cases, including the benefits and risks, as well as the medical device regulations. The pre-conference session concluded with presentations pertaining to performance enhancement for the athlete, including Olympic weightlifting safety and plyometric training in rehabilitation. The conference formally began on Friday with several breakout instructional labs, offering attendees practical tips and techniques for immediate use in the clinic. Following the morning instructional labs, the next two sessions focused on the throwing shoulder. Presentations ranged from an overview of pathologies in the throwing shoulder to new surgical techniques to early and late-stage rehabilitation of the throwing shoulder. The Friday afternoon session focused on “The
Difficult Hip” -- biomechanics, etiology, surgery, and rehabilitation. The educational programming that day concluded with another round of smaller instructional labs.
Friday programming also included an inspiring keynote presentation from Kevin Flike, a former Green Beret and wounded American veteran. Flike was injured during his second deployment to Afghanistan on September 25, 2011. During
Kevin Flike, former Green Beret and wounded veteran, relayed his story to attendees as the keynote speaker, and how physical therapy has been key to restoring his function. As one attendee said, “You could hear a pin drop in that room. What a hero.”
The Performance Health/Biofreeze booth had a fun sports theme that drew a lot of attendee attention.
an intense firefight, Flike was shot in the lower abdomen, fracturing his hip, losing part of his colon, and causing severe damage to his femoral nerve. With little hope of recovering function in his leg, Flike underwent an experimental surgery in which a sensory nerve graft was used to
reconstruct his damaged femoral nerve. After numerous surgeries and thousands of hours of time spent in physical therapy, Flike has regained function in his lower extremity, and noted that he has even progressed to running over seven miles.
Blaise Williams and Bryan Heiderscheit, both SPTS board members, had their participants on their feet during a breakout session.
The Sports Section continues to welcome active participation from younger members in the section with events such as the “Student Meet and Greet session and the TeamMates dinner. more involved in the section during the “Student Meet and Greet” on Friday morning. Friday night concluded with the increasingly popular TeamMates dinner. The dinner allows “rookies,” students and recent graduates, to mingle with “captains,” established professionals, to learn about the numerous opportunities in the sports physical therapy field. This year’s TeamMates dinner included a question and answer session with keynote speaker Kevin Flike. TeamMates is held biannually at Team Concept Conference and Combined Sections Meeting, and students are encouraged to sign up early because seats are limited. The 2018 Team Concept Conference will again take place at the Westgate Las Vegas Resort and Casino from November 29th to December 1st. We look forward to seeing you there!

MEMBER SPOTLIGHT: Julie Granger PT, DPT, SCS Julie has always had an affinity for sports. She started swimming competitively at age 6 and competed year-round through her college years. In college, she competed as part of Duke University’s NCAA Division 1 varsity women’s swimming & diving team. Mid-way through college, she suffered a major shoulder injury which required surgery … but this change in fortune led her to alter her medical school plans and directed her towards a career in physical therapy. Throughout PT school at Emory University, Julie always knew she wanted to work with athletes. During her clinical rotations, she was fortunate to work at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta’s Sports Medicine Program and this solidified her interest. After graduating, she worked in private practice at a sports medicine/orthopaedic clinic for several years and found herself further gravitating towards women’s health. To reconcile her passions for young athletes and women’s health, Julie realized her true passion lies in treating young female athletes and improving their health to prevent problems into adulthood. While she does see athletes of almost any sport, with any musculoskeletal pain problem, she focuses on treating endurance athletes (runners, triathletes, swimmers). Unsurprisingly, much of this population suffers from overuse injuries, fractures, and back pain. However, in these young female athletes, she also treats a lot of pelvic pain and pelvic floor dysfunction. With a huge stigma associated with pelvic pain dysfunction, to an outsider it
would seem as though it would be impossible to find adolescent females willing to admit they have a pelvic pain problem. Though a challenge, Julie notes that “I work with young female athletes and their moms.” Oftentimes, Julie says that the mothers with pelvic pain or sports injuries that she is treating realize that if their conditions had been addressed when they were adolescents, they may not have their current pain problems. These mothers then refer their own daughters to therapy or talk to their daughter’s sports team, which leads to further conversations and referrals. Additionally, Julie has used social media to raise awareness about these issues, which she believes helps reduce the stigma associated with them. Patients and even other physical therapists have reached out to her on social media for help. An entrepreneur by nature, Julie started her own practice, PRISM Wellness Center, in January 2016. She currently treats patients 15 hours/week but also works PRN in the pediatric inpatient setting. She teaches in continuing education courses (online courses and across the country) and serves as a research advisor at Emory University’s DPT Program to students interested in investigating the young female athlete triad and Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport (RED-S). Julie also recently published her e-Book, The Young Female Athlete’s Playbook, a holistic guide to optimal health, performance, injury prevention, and success for girls in sports. What advice would Julie give to new graduates who want to get more involved in sports PT? She
recommends first getting involved in “whatever movement activity you like to do,” including local clubs and sports teams. She encourages networking within the profession especially through SPTS events and by joining SIGs. If you have the opportunity, she recommends that you connect yourself with a mentor with a sports medicine background, as this may give you the chance to do on-field work. Additionally she recommends that new PTs focus on building skills immediately after graduating; while she values continuing education, she encourages new graduates to realize that “you have time to take all the courses. You have time to get all the letters behind your name. You don’t have to get those as soon as you get out of school. You don’t have to be THE EXPERT in two years.” And to therapists who are working with athletes? “Know the sport. Know enough about every sport or get the client to tell you about the sport. You need to be able to get into the minds of the athletes, understand the sport biomechanics. You have to be able to speak their language and keep everything sports specific and functional.” To learn more: PRISM Wellness Center: https://www.prismwellnesscenter.com/about For her e-Book: http://buildstrongirls.com/product/theyoung-female-athletes-playbook/ On Twitter: @JulztheFish On Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/prismwellnesscenter/ On Instagram: @prismwellnesscenter
