In order to assure the continuation of essential sports physical therapy research, the Sports Physical Therapy Section has established the Legacy Fund to leave a legacy of research excellence for the advancement of sports physical therapy practice. The purpose of the Legacy Fund is to invest in clinically relevant sports physical therapy research by providing research funding and mentorship to the members of the Sports Physical Therapy Section. PHYSICAL THERAPY SERVICES RESIDENCY By Laura Stanley

Nestled in the heart of Elizabethton, TN, Physical Therapy Services is home to another one of our country’s strong sports physical therapy residency programs. Led by Danny Smith PT, DHSc, OCS, SCS, ATC, PTS offers a unique residency experience that engages residents into the small-town community as the point providers for sports physical therapy care. The PTS sports physical therapy program is currently in its fourth year, with its next resident slated to begin in January 2015. The thirteen month program runs from January to the following February, a timeline that was recently changed to allow residents seven months of training prior to preseason football coverage. Included in the program are fifty weeks of formal educational activities, including lectures, structured mentoring time in clinic and the athletic training venues, shadowing with physicians and other healthcare providers.

an individual approach that allows each resident to gain the foundational components of advanced specialization training while pursuing areas of sports medicine for which they are passionate.

Danny Smith PT, DHSc, OCS, SCS, ATC, PTS, center, is flanked by Joe Black and Tracy Martin at a local high school football game. He is the founder of Physical Therapy Services in Elizabethton, TN. Each resident completes two case studies, where the have the chance to follow an athlete from the sideline evaluation through emergency care, surgery, treatment, and return to sport. Additionally, residents join the clinical faculty to help teach a sports injury course at a small local college and assist with a physical therapy skills class at East Tennessee State University. The program emphasizes

Perhaps one of the most unique aspects of the PTS sports residency is the involvement residents have with Emergency Medical Response training. Not only do residents help teach two to three times each year, they also become American Red Cross instructor certified themselves. This type of experience prepares residents to be leaders and contributors to the field of sports physical therapy, and promotes interdisciplinary sports medicine training. For more information on the PTS sports residency program, contact Director Danny Smith at ddsdpt@yahoo.com.

HAVING TROUBLE LOGGING IN TO ACCESS IJSPT? YOU MAY FIND THE REASON HERE... The Section and marketing offices have been seeing a lot of questions about problems logging into the website to access the IJSPT. We asked Mary Wilkinson, the SPTS Director of Marketing and Webmaster why this is happening. “There are several issues we are finding when we look into the database,” she says, “and this is where members should look first. We receive a report from the APTA every month, which lists those who have joined the Section or dropped their Section membership. Unfortunately, there can be as much as a 60-day lag from the time someone joins or renews their membership in the Section, and when we receive the information. So it is possible that members who renewed late may be removed from our database. “We are seeing more and more members who are going into the site and changing their usernames and passwords. This will guarantee that you will no longer receive access to the IJSPT, as the formula we set up in the system has been overridden.” Mary encourages all members to leave their sites with the username as their APTA number and the password as their last name. “Sometimes we run into members who have set up separate logins with the same email address during product purchases. Duplicate email addresses also set up a red flag in the database and shut down access.” As always, if you have any issues with the website, feel free to email Mary Wilkinson at mwilkinson@spts.org or Tammy Jackson at tjackson@spts.org. We want all members to take advantage of their benefits!
